The place to be for NZ's volcanic landscapes. From short walks to challenging day hikes. Hike the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, described as the best one-day hike in the country. So many places to see - Tama lakes, Lake Surpise, Silica Rapids, Taranaki Falls, to name a few.

Tongariro National Park is spectacular, take the chair lift up Ruapehu from Whakapapa in the summer time or walk the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Turoa and Whakapapa are the places to be during winter to get those amazing skiing and snowboarding days.

Tongariro National Park with its three spectacular volcanic mountains – Tongariro, Ngāuruhoe and Ruapehu – has a multitude of short and long hikes to explore this place of extremes and surprises, with snow-blanketed fields, ancient lava flows and dense beech forests.

Natural Feature
“Hike to Tama Lakes (Upper and Lower Tama Lakes) from Whakapapa Visitor Centre at Ngauruhoe Place. After leaving the Taranaki Falls Walk, the track crosses undulating tussock country and alpine herbfields. Further on, the track branches to the left to Tama Lakes, while the main track continues on to Waihohonu Hut. There is a view of the lower lake (1240 metres), then the track climbs steeply to a viewpoint (1440 metres) of the upper lake. Tama Lakes occupy several old explosion craters on the Tama Saddle between Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe. There are no formed tracks down to the lakes, the descent to both is via steep gullies.”
