Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve

Why locals recommend it
In an urban mecca like Oakland, it’s amazing to know that this place exists, and that you can hike on an inactive volcano. It’s connected to a vast network of trails, but I usually stick to the Skyline Trail—it’ll take you up into the rolling hills with beautiful vistas, or down through dense jungle-like forestry. It’s the perfect yin and yang. Keep an eye out for a few things: the labyrinth, the poison oak, and the wild cows that you’ll sometimes find on the trail.

A favorite spot to hike with our pup Hattie Mae. The scenery is lovely and the trails sometimes have cows on them. It's a great hike!

Park
“The next closest regional park from the cottage (approximately .5 mile). It is located on the left hand side of the road about .25 miles past the entrance to Sibley. There's a great 45-60 minute self guided loop trail just inside the park.”

Movie Theater
“Compared to the others on the list, the Piedmont Theatre isn't as Art Deco extravaganza. But it is the oldest operating theater, opened in 1917. Since 1994, it has been operated by Landmark Theatres. Go for indie and foreign flicks. On Saturday nights, movie raffles and prizes from local merchants are given out pre-screening. Staff members still thank people personally for coming to the show. ”
