Famed for its consistent surf breaks, Playa Avellanas is a dream destination for surfers of all levels. Stop by the legendary beachfront restaurant Lola’s, where you can savor fresh seafood and enjoy the laid-back ambiance.

Luxury Villas Costa Rica
From Luxury Villas Costa Rica's guidebook
Playa Avellanas, Costa Rica is one of the best beaches in Guanacaste for surf, drinks and sunset. It’s only a 30 minute drive from Tamarindo so if you want to see other beaches, head to Avellanas (also called Playa Avellana). Avellanas beach is one of a kind with tan sand backed by mangroves, shrubs, trees and misshapen trees. The wild growth of trees are excellent shady spots to lay down under and they create unique and interesting beachscapes. Normally this beach is not too crowded but it does get very busy on the weekends, during Christmas, New Years and Easter Week. Avellanas is getting more popular among city Costa Ricans so while weekdays may be quiet empty, weekends are busy.

Only 25 minutes away from Casa Perezosa. world-class surfing, and relaxed atmosphere. With golden sand, clear blue waters, and mangrove-lined shores, it’s perfect for both surfers and beach lovers. The waves here cater to all levels, from beginners to pros, earning it the nickname “Little Hawaii” due to its powerful breaks. Despite its growing popularity, Avellanas maintains a tranquil, off-the-beaten-path feel, with charming beachside restaurants like Lola’s, where you can enjoy fresh seafood while watching the waves. It’s an excellent destination for those seeking surf, nature, and a laid-back vibe.

A more serene escape, Playa Langosta is known for its soft, golden sand and mesmerizing tide pools. Popular among experienced surfers, this beach is also ideal for long, peaceful walks along the shoreline. A known nesting site for sea turtles, offering a chance to witness nature’s incredible cycle during the season.

Luxury Villas Costa Rica
From Luxury Villas Costa Rica's guidebook
Although Playa Langosta is only 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) south of Tamarindo, this pristine tan sand beach has a completely different vibe. While Tamarindo is known for a rowdy nightlife, a crowded surf and more conveniences, Langosta has just a handful of hotels, rentals and businesses lining the shore. Because of this, Langosta is an excellent beach for those looking for a more laid back and quieter atmosphere. Enjoy long uninterrupted walks on the beach during sunset, check out the many tide pools and rocks for ocean critters or simply lay down a towel and soak in the sun.

Denise
From Denise's guidebook
Just to the south of Playa Tamarindo is Playa Langosta. This white sand beach has exposed lava rocks extending into the water which can produce unique peaks and a variety of options. The main surf spot is located in front of the Occidental Resort and is a playful river mouth with right- and left-handers that change from season to season. With a better southerly orientation than Playa Tamarindo, Playa Langosta is generally more sizable and only about five minutes drive to the south of Tamarindo. Playa Langosta receives both northerly and southerly angles enhancing consistency. The months of March, April, and July are your best chances of scoring quality surf. Hacienda Pinilla enjoys an incognito access point to the south end of the beach.

Linda
From Linda's guidebook
Heaven! Be warned-There’s no cell reception here! But there is plenty shade to hang your hammock and drop out for awhile. Sea turtles nest year round here, with the most activity in August and September. Please be cautious and aware. At the southern end, there is a trailhead that goes up the mountain. Turn right at the top to find the scenic overlook. Spectacular! At low tide, you can also snorkel at the south end of Playa Minas. To get there: Leaving the community, take a left and bear left at the first split. Continue about a mile until you see a green fence and an anonymous road on the right. Be advised: an SUV with good clearance or a 4 x 4 is recommended especially during the green season.

One of the most popular activities to do when visiting Guanacaste Costa Rica is zip-lining through the canopy of giant Guanacaste trees. At the Congo Trail Canopy Tour you will experience authentic Costa Rica and explore natural forests that have existed for hundreds of years nestled in this quiet enclave of Central America. The Original Canopy tour combines 100's of meters of zip-lines and platforms with hanging bridges for a truly unique adventure. Our professional zip-line guides will fit you for your harness, helmet and other safety equipment, then you will listen to an important safety speech detailing the do's and don'ts of zip-lining and then you are ready to fly through the canopy. Feel the thrill as you finally get hooked up to your first zip-line and are set free to zip down 100's of meters of cable suspended between giant Guanacaste trees. Keep on the lookout for families of monkeys foraging in the canopy for mangoes, bananas and other types of food. Between each zip-line there are platforms that will lead you to the next step until you finally reach the end of the canopy tour.

A Tamarindo main stay. Wonderful place to eat on the beach and has a variety of local foods. Try a Casado, "married in spanish," Fish, chicken or pork served with beans, rice, vegetable and salad. You can order sauces on the side that are wonderful. If you have sport fished they will cook up your fish for you in several different styles. Great place for sunset and drinks too but get there early as the locals trap up the chairs. Be sure and have breakfast there on a Saturday or Sunday morning and DO NOT miss the pies. Tamarindo lives by the motto, "Surf, eat & party." This beach town lies at the heart of the region’s Gold Coast Beaches. With modern technology and contemporary amenities, Tamarindo is a unique combination of town meets nature. This town attracts global travelers looking to enjoy and explore Costa Rica’s dazzling wildlife with the comfort of knowing conveniences like grocery stores and pharmacies are just around the corner. The downtown area is surrounded by the pristine nature that drew travelers to Tamarindo in the first place. Pumping surf, a myriad adventure tours and nightlife lure tourists to Tamarindo, as well as a slew of expats who now call it home. Just under an hour’s drive from the newly expanded Liberia International Airport, Tamarindo’s prime location and top-notch beaches are more accessible than ever. Adrenaline junkies flock to Tamarindo for its seemingly endless list of outdoor activities. Travelers can splash through rivers on a heart-pumping ATV tour or enjoy a game of world-class golf nearby at Hacienda Pinilla's scenic 18-hole course. Sunset catamaran excursions, canopy tours and scuba trips also make up some other viable options. Playa Grande is a laid-back beach town known for its natural beauty, friendly community, and relaxed pace of life. It’s the kind of place where mornings start slow, days revolve around the ocean, and evenings are calm and peaceful. Playa Grande is famous for its wide sandy beach, great surf, and protected nature (it’s part of a national park area, so development is intentionally limited). You’ll find a mix of locals, surfers, families, and long-term visitors who all appreciate the quiet, authentic Costa Rican vibe. There are a handful of excellent cafés and restaurants within walking distance, but Playa Grande is not a party town—things tend to wind down early, making it perfect for rest, nature, and quality time. Local tip: Embrace the slower rhythm, walk or bike when you can, and don’t be surprised if Playa Grande quickly starts to feel like home.

Playa Grande is a vital part of the Marino Las Baulas National Park. Northern Guanacaste Province is made up of a couple of different clusters of beach towns. The most visited is the busy Tamarindo and its surrounds. This includes the beach towns north of Tamarindo like Playa Grande and then Playa Conchal, Playa Brasilito, and Playa Flamingo. Potrero, just five minutes past Flamingo, is the last major town you’ll come to in this group. Geographically, Potrero is literally at the end of the road. While farther north there are more destinations like Playas del Coco, Playa Hermosa, and the Papagayo, these are separated from Potrero by mostly wild jungle. The one road that does connect them, Route 911, was recently paved. However, it is still narrow, slower, and impacted by seasonal flooding. This keeps many people away, giving Potrero a typically quiet feel.

The beach at Flamingo is only about one mile long (1.5 km) but is the perfect spot to dig your toes in the sand and relax. Only 25 mins away from the Villa. Along the upper part of the beach, you’ll find some shrubby trees that provide a little shade. Beware, though, that some of these are manchineel trees, a type of poisonous apple. Sap from the leaves, bark, or fruit can cause a skin rash and blisters. You’ll be fine as long as you don’t touch them, and if you are worried, there are beach chair and umbrella rentals available too. The sand along Flamingo Beach is a light, white color. It has a slight pink hue in certain light, hence the Flamingo name. The waves are generally small but can be powerful at times, so use caution when wading in.

It’s an easy day trip from Playa Grande and well worth the visit if you want a change of scenery. One of the highlights is the Flamingo Marina, a modern, full-service marina that offers some of the best fishing charters and ocean excursions in the region. From here, you can book: 🎣 Sportfishing charters (half-day or full-day) 🚤 Sunset cruises and private boat tours 🐬 Snorkeling and wildlife excursions Even if you’re not heading out on the water, the marina area is a great place to walk around, grab a meal, and enjoy ocean views. Local tip: Playa Flamingo is perfect for a laid-back afternoon—combine a marina visit with lunch or sunset drinks before heading back to the calm of Playa Grande.

Flamingo Beach offers incredible sunsets, golden sands, natural lava rock pools and waves perfect for body-surfing and boogie boards. I love the fact that this beach is never busy and I can walk across to Margaritaville for a nice cold refreshing drink!

This will be your closest beach aside from the beachfront at the house. Playa Flamingo is most always busy with beautiful sand and smashing waves. There is a small area for surfing at the furthest end of the beach. You can easily walk to this beach in 10 mins. Being in decent shape is necessary to walk back up to the house. The popular restaurant here is Coco Loco's, enjoy a coconut and fresh fish with your toes in the sand. Many chairs/umbrellas for rent. Coco Loco serves food/drinks to you on the beach if you are close to Coco Loco.

Saturday Mornings at the Skatepark (7am - 1pm) If you're in town for longer than a week - this is definitely the place to go for fresh organic produce and all kinds of hand-crafted items from jewelry to kombucha, empanadas, local food and more! It gets crowded so get there early and get your fresh produce! I also highly recommend the Pineapple Man at the far end of the market who has a red truck. He sells eggs, honey, and a variety of fruits but mostly pineapples are his thing and are always top-notch when I ask for a pineapple to be ready in 1 day, 2 days, a week ... etc he picks the perfect one for you!

Las Catalinas is a beach town developed in 2006 along the shores of the Pacific Ocean in the Guanacaste Province of northwest Costa Rica. It was envisioned as a compact, car-free, and fully walkable town, based on the principles of New Urbanism. The resort town has gained international acclaim for its small-town environment, authentic Costa Rican culture, and scenery. The town offers stays in a hotel, villas and apartments. Its architecture was inspired by colonial towns in Latin America such as Antigua, Panama's Casco Viejo, Panama, and San Miguel de Allende, as well as by Mediterranean hill and coastal towns. The natural environment and proximity to the sea make swimming, standup paddleboarding, kayaking, boogie boarding, and snorkeling popular sports in the area.

You will absolutely not regret spending a half day exploring this seaside city! It's stunning as it resembles a Greek City with it's cobblestone paths and well-planned architecture. There are several restaurant options in the city if you want to have lunch. The waves are higher here but offer some great photo opportunities.

Every Thursdays from sunset until 9:30: Tamarindo Moonlight Market Food, art vendors and live music

Courtney
From Courtney's guidebook
A fun evening stop just 10–15 minutes from Playa Grande. The Tamarindo Night Market features local artisans, handmade goods, jewelry, clothing, and street food, often with live music. It’s a great place to pick up souvenirs and experience the local culture after sunset. Tip: Go hungry and bring cash—there are usually great food vendors and snacks to try. Night markets in this area are typically seasonal (more frequent during high season and holidays). Ask us or a local café what’s happening during your stay—we’re happy to help point you in the right direction.
