Going Local: Guests from Korea love quality time with their hosts

J and Eun hail from Korea, and in 2012 they got their first taste of Airbnb on their honeymoon in England. They loved spending less than they would have on hotels, but even more so, they loved staying in a local’s home and getting to know their host.

Now, their thinking has changed—they only want to travel with Airbnb, and they want to travel everywhere.

In March 2013, J and Eun departed for a two-year trip to 24 countries on Airbnb. They are staying in each destination for a month, giving them ample time to know each place like a local. They’re also able to spend a lot of time with the hosts in each city. Clearly, everyone involved loves this arrangement.

“By meeting Airbnb hosts, our travel becomes more meaningful. And now, we’re making friends all around the world. They always say to us when we leave, ‘Come back here anytime and stay in my house, and that time, you are not our guest, just our friend.’”

J and Eun are currently traversing Europe (again) before crossing the Atlantic to explore North America.

Before they embarked on their adventures around the world, J and Eun posted a YouTube video called “You can be our Airbnb hosts.” Hosts from around the world—including the United States, Spain, and Portugal—responded with invitations.

“When most people travel to Florence, they want to see the Duomo, but we’ve been spending most of our time in neighborhoods, living like locals.”

Daniel, their host, was quick to recommended Florence’s best eats.

Florence’s winding streets gave them plenty of opportunities to engage with friendly locals.

Because J and Eun are spending a month in each city, they’re able to spend ample time with their Airbnb hosts. “It’s very special.”
