Feel at Home Everywhere: The beauty of immersive travel
“When I am in Rome I want to feel Italian, when I am in Denmark I want to feel Danish. Then I am able to experience everything like living there."
Anna feels a deep connection with her spectacular country, Iceland, and maintains a beautifully appointed home that is the highlight of many Airbnb guests’ visits. She goes out of her way to ensure her guests have meaningful experiences, with breakfasts, gift bottles of wine and more, but one guest benefitted unusually from Anna’s hospitality—and in turn, Anna benefitted, too.
A pending Airbnb guest, Amy, told Anna of her dream to do something extra special for her wedding—to get married in Iceland, and to have a Viking themed wedding. Anna told her she would investigate, and in turn, Amy’s wedding became a community event. Anna’s sister gave period hairstyle instructions, and her mother would bake a traditional cake. Anna even found an Icelandic “goddess” to advise her on traditional Viking ceremonies. They found a cave close to the ocean and decorated it with raven wings, Icelandic herbs, candles, and an open fire. She drove the bride to the cave in her 1958 DeSoto, and recalls it being very mystical and different from anything else.
"I gave them an Icelandic wool carpet, and the goddess wrapped them together in the wool, and we all started to cry because it was so beautiful. We stood there in the cave, over the open fire, and they were hugging each other in the wool carpet of Iceland.”
The whole process of planning a wedding made Anna so happy. She loves doing everything she can for her guests—in fact, she thinks she might love hosting even more than her guests love guesting.
“I would really like them to experience my home like they were Icelanders for a week or so. And that is what’s fantastic about Airbnb.”
