The Old Bazaar also known as Turkish Bazaar is a bazaar located in Skopje, North Macedonia, situated on the eastern bank of the Vardar River, stretching from the Stone Bridge to the Bit-Pazar and from the Skopje Fortress to the Serava river. Do not miss! Desserts to indulge in and not to miss in the Old Bazaar Pide – this oval-shaped baked bread is topped with meat or veggie ingredients. I had a great one with cheese, mushrooms and olives Tulumba – visually resembling a churro but soaked in a syrup like jalebi, this is one VERY sweet dessert! Kunefe – kadayif noodles and unsweetened cheese make up this Turkish dessert resembling sweet spaghetti. Firin Sutlac – this ancient Ottoman dish comprises baked sugar and milk, slightly burnt on top for its signature crunch.

The old Skopje bazaar is only a 20-minute walk from the apartment. Visit the cultural landmarks such as Kurshumli An, Kapan an, Suli An, Daut Pashin Amam, the church of St. Dimitria with the weeping frescoes, the church of St. Spas where the greatest Macedonian revolutionary Goce Delchev is buried, as well as the Skopje fortress. In local restaurants such as Destan, Tetex and others, try wonderful local specialties such as Tavce Gravche, kebabs, Sharska burger and others. The zoo in Skopje is just one of the green oases where nature is fully manifested. Located in the Skopje City Park, which is only a 15-minute walk from the main square, this is one of the oldest zoos on the Balkan Peninsula. The zoo in Skopje was founded in 1926 and has been expanding and improving ever since. It was recently renovated and at the moment, are 495 animals (from 96 species of animals) living on an area of 120,000 square meters. Skopje Zoo is a family friendly place – the locals bring their children here for a fun family day out filled with activities and educational tours. With that in mind, the zoo is mostly visited on weekends, so if you want to avoid the crowds, it’s best to visit Monday through Friday. It takes approximately 3 hours to complete the walk and see all the animals. Working hours: The zoo in Skopje is open to visitors 365 days a year. November to February from 09:00 – 16:00 March to October from 09:00 – 17:00 April to September from 09:00 – 18:00 May to August from 09:00 – 19:00 Animals in the Skopje Zoo The animals in the Skopje Zoo are certainly a spectacular sight: there are mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and insects from all over the world. The habitat for each animal, after a series of renovation activities, is incredibly close to what their natural habitat looks like.

The Millennium Cross in Skopje is a must-see attraction for anyone visiting the city. Standing tall at 66 meters, the cross is located on top of Vodno Mountain and offers panoramic views of the city and the surrounding area. The Millennium Cross is located on top of Vodno Mountain, which can be reached by taking a cable car. However, before arriving at the cable car, you will have to get to Middle Vodno either by taking the public bus #25, which costs $0.60 and takes around 30 minutes from the city center, or a taxi, which costs around $5 and takes around 15-20minutes from the city center, depending on traffic. Once there, you will find the ticket booth to the cable car, where you will pay 120 MKD (around $2) for a return journey. If you choose to hike, the trail is free. On the other hand, the cable car operates from 10 am to 5 pm, except on Mondays when it’s closed. Additionally, remember that the cable car takes a 30-minute break between 3:30 and 4 p.m., so don’t get scared thinking that you’ve been left up there with no way to come down. However, we aren’t sure how the staff in charge of the cable car ensures that everyone has descended before they shut down for the day, so make sure to check the operating hours and final descent times before your ascent. These times can vary depending on the season, and being aware of them can help you avoid potential inconveniences. Also, consider the weather conditions, as the cable car might not operate in case of strong winds or storms due to safety reasons.

The Millennium Cross is a huge steel cross on the top of Vodno mountain overlooking Skopje. It’s one of the city’s most iconic viewpoints with great panoramas of the city and surroundings. 🚌 How to Get There By Bus You can take Bus #25 from central Skopje (often from near Macedonia Square / city centre) up to Sredno Vodno (the middle of the mountain). The bus ride is budget-friendly (around 35–40 MKD one-way, under €1). Buses run roughly every 30–60 min during the day. Once you get off at Sredno Vodno, you can choose to either hike up the rest of the mountain or use the cable car. 🚡 Cable Car From Sredno Vodno there’s a cable car up to the Millennium Cross. The round-trip cable car ticket is very cheap (about 100–120 MKD total, ~€1.50–€2). It gives you beautiful panoramic views while you ride up. *Note: The cable car usually doesn’t run on Mondays and sometimes on the last Tuesday of the month for maintenance. Operating hours also change with the season (generally morning to early evening). 🥾 Hiking on Vodno If you prefer hiking, from Sredno Vodno there are trails leading up to the Millennium Cross. It’s a nice way to enjoy the nature and forest views, but it can take longer and is steeper than the cable car. 🌲 Vodno–Matka Trails There’s also a concept of extended Vodno–Matka trails — these are longer hiking routes connecting from Vodno toward Matka Canyon through forests and ridges. These paths are popular with hikers and runners and go through scenic nature, though they are more challenging and longer (several hours). 📌 Quick Tips Best time to go is daytime so you can see the views clearly and catch the cable car back down. Bring water and comfortable shoes if you plan to hike. Check the local cable car schedule on the day — hours and operation can change depending on weather or maintenance.

The Millennium Cross is located on the top of Krstovar on the Vodno mountain, directly above the city of Skopje. It was built in 2002. With a height of 66 m, it is one of the tallest buildings in Macedonia. Its architects are Jovan Stefanovski-Zhan and Oliver Petrovski. It was built in honor of two thousand years of Christianity in Macedonia and the arrival of the new millennium. The cross was built on the highest point of Mount Vodno in a place known as "Krstovar", which means Place of the Cross, because a smaller cross was located there in the past.

Highly recommended and best museum for my taste, located next to the Stone Bridge it consists of 13 units, which chronologically presents the history of the Macedonian people to the period of socialism. At the very entrance to the Museum, the original Macedonian Declaration of Independence is placed. Do look for the guided tour so that you would get a nice understanding of everything, it lasts around 1h 30m.

The Museum of the Macedonian Struggle for Independence is located in Skopje, Macedonia, on the left bank of the Vardar River. The museum was built in the period from 2008 to 2011, and officially opened on September 8, 2011, on the occasion of twenty years since the declaration of independence of the Republic of Macedonia. Its building itself has been declared a cultural heritage of Macedonia. It is located in a building of 6,435 square meters of net area, the museum exhibition rooms cover 2,500 square meters. The stained glass window, which adorns the central part of the hall of the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle, is made of over 14,248 cathedral and opalescent glass pieces. In the shape of a circle, it is titled Macedonian dance. The entire circle features rich decorative ornamentation with folklore and floral elements, from traditional textile ornamentation from the Macedonian climate. The shapes repeat and form the circle. Among them stand out two floral ornaments - tulips. The stained glass window is located under the dome of the museum building and decorates the central part of the hall of the museum.

Kale fortress has the dominant place in Skopje. It was built of stone blocks from the ruins of the city of Scupi, during the rule of the Byzantium Emperor Justinijan the 1st. The ramparts of the Skopsko Kale are 121 meter long and today one square, one rectangular and one round tower are saved. It originates from the 6th century, while it's presents appearance is from the Ottoman period. The great complex since 1392 was stationary of the Turkish army until 1913, when Skopje falls under Serbian authority. And in the period from 1913 to 1953 here was settled the Yugoslav army. Today in the space of the fortress is an arranged park, which serves for recreation and fun, and in the evening hours besides the sounds of the Macedonian folks music, the visitors have a wonderful view on the city and the river Vardar from there. Currently this fortification is being reconstructed.

The Skopsko Kale Fortress is another historic site in the city, right next to the Old Turkish Bazaar, first built in the VI century by the Romans same as the Stone Bridge. It has a great panoramic view of Skopje and entrance is free.

Macedonia Square is the main square of the capital city of Macedonia, Skopje. It is located in the heart of the city and it is the biggest one in the country. What makes this place so special and different from all others is its beautiful architecture and design. There are many statues and monuments situated all over the square so you can get more familiar with the rich history of Macedonia. The most noticeable monument is the outstanding fountain above which the statue of the ancient warrior king Alexander the Great is placed. Furthermore, there are many other statues: Justinian I, Goce Delchev, tzar Samuil and others. During the night ours the square has a magical look, as it is illuminated by many lights which make the evening walks pleasant and relaxed. The popular Macedonia Square is an ideal place where you can enjoy with family or friends as there are many cafes and restaurants where you can explore the splendid taste of traditional Macedonian cuisine. Many stores and a shopping mall in surrounding for a small or bigger shopping.

Macedonia Square is the main square of Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia. The square is the biggest in North Macedonia with total 18.500 m2. It is located in the central part of the city, and it crosses the Vardar River. The Christmas festivals are always held there and it commonly serves as the site of cultural, political and other events. The independence from Yugoslavia was declared here by the first president of Macedonia, Kiro Gligorov. The square is part of the Skopje 2014 project.

The Millennium Cross on Vodno Mountain’s highest point is one of the first sights you’ll notice from most everywhere in Macedonia’s capital city, Skopje. At 1,066 meters (3,497 feet) the views from the base of the Millennium Cross are impressive, although finding out how to get there isn’t exactly clear. Fortunately, that’s the most difficult part; once you have the directions visiting the Millennium Cross is pretty easy. Get To The Bus Station Next To The Bus Station You’re likely to be told about the “Millennium Cross” bus line and all the stops it makes throughout Skopje. But it doesn’t, so don’t wait around at bus stop 11 as I did only to find out the route is essentially unpredictable. Skopje is small enough that from most points in the city, like Macedonia Square, you can walk to the International Bus Station within 30 minutes. (It’s roughly 2 kilometers, 1.2 miles, away.) Next to the International Bus Station is a large parking lot you can call the national bus station. Cable car cost is 120 denar, about 2 euro, for a round-trip. One way tickets are available as well, many bikers take the lift up, then cycle back down.

Vodno represents the lungs of the city. The Millenium Cross is situated on an altitude of 1050 m above the sea. To get to the cross you can take a bus/taxi up to Middle Vodno and then a cable car to the summit. My recommendation remains to hike to the summit - it will take you around 1,5 hours if you are fit :)

Open at the top, it is surrounded by fir and oak forests. Children playgrounds and wood benches with tables for picnic. The best part is getting there - hiking on the hiking trail from Mid - mountain Vodno (Sredno Vodno), going on the funicular for a lazy photography session, or on a mountain bike, you are guaranteed great views of the Skopje valley.

City Park is a pleasant place in Skopje to walk, run or aimlessly meander, coffee in hand. There are plenty of paths and walking routes including one alongside the river. Grab a coffee at Central Park. I would suggest walking from the city to the park then leaving via the exit closest to Debar Maalo, an area of Skopje with bohemian neighborhood, one of the oldest in the city.
