Our entire family are big zoo fans and the Santa Barbara Zoo is one of our absolute favorites! As a medium sized zoo, what it lacks in size it makes up for in quality. Kind of like Santa Barbara itself... Each exhibit is well curated and they have an impressive collection of animals, including very rare snow leopards. The grounds of the zoo are equally impressive to walk around, bosting an incredible collection of plants. There is a small train you can ride around the perimeter of the property that is quite fun, especially for kids. The entire zoo can be viewed in about an hour if you were somewhat quick or two hours if you take your time. A trip to the zoo makes for a fun and memorable outing. How often do you look out on the beach and ocean while feeding a giraffe?

Explore the wonders of the natural world at the Santa Barbara Zoo, where the beauty of the wildlife is matched only by the lush grounds and sweeping views. Located just two miles from State Street, this 30-acre park is home to more than 146 species, including mammals, reptiles, birds and insects, exhibited in open, naturalistic habitats overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Santa Ynez Mountains. The Zoo can be toured in about two hours, but you’ll likely be tempted to linger longer. Meet the Zoo’s tallest creatures during giraffe feeding time, or take a relaxing ride around the park on the Zoo Train. The wharf is a great place to start your Santa Barbara sightseeing trip. There are wonderful restaurants on the pier itself, including wine-tasting, and ice cream and gift shops, but the true value of going to the pier is the views of the beaches and the stunning mountains when you turn around. This is also the beginning of STATE Street which is close to 5 miles of shopping and restaurants and famous white architectural buildings that line the street on both sides for miles. It starts at the wharf and it goes straight through downtown Santa Barbara. It’s fun to rent a bike and cycle State Street and also fun to rent bikes to ride alongside the beach itself in the bike path provided. ***Santa Barbara sailing company does Sunset sales for a very inexpensive price. They are booked daily and you can walk on with your friends and have a glass of wine and go for a two hours sail and be back in time for dinner. !!

Santa Barbara’s number 1 attraction. Take a ride on the Water Taxi. Spend some time with marine life at the Sea Center. See what your future holds at Madame Rosinkas. Visit the Stearns Wharf Bait & Tackle and cast your line to fish at the edge of the wharf. Come for the best food and the best views in all of Santa Barbara. You will find char-burgers and fish and chips at Char West; casual dining at Longboards Grill; fresh fish, steaks, prime rib, cocktails, and fine wines at the Harbor Restaurant; casual dining and the catch of the day at Moby Dicks Restaurant; and local crustaceans, shrimp, and other seafood specialties at the Santa Barbara Shellfish Company. They all have the best views of Santa Barbara. There are many specialty shops at Stearns Wharf. You will find souvenirs, delicious candy at Mother Stearns Candy Shop, Ice Cream at the Great Pacific Ice Cream Company, and unique shells at Nature’s Own Gift Shop.

Lizard’s Mouth is a striking sandstone rock formation perched in the Santa Ynez Mountains, known for its “mouth‑like” overhang and panoramic views of Santa Barbara, Goleta, and the Pacific coast.  It’s also a popular spot for light rock scrambling and bouldering. This hike offers sweeping views over the coastline and, on clear days, of the Channel Islands. The round‑trip hike is short — about ½ mile total and roughly 50 ft of elevation gain. There are two trailhead options:   (1) The lower trailhead (first parking area) offers a bit more scrambling over rocks and is more engaging.  (2) The upper trailhead is shorter and more of a straightforward dirt path — good if you just want the view.  The trail begins along West Camino Cielo Road (Forest Route 5N12), about 3.5 miles off Highway 154.  Note: trail signage is minimal and the trail is not heavily maintained.

The mission has a large lawn out front that many people enjoy having picnics on. There is a great view to the ocean from the mission lawn and many of the neighboring homes boast beautiful mission style architecture. *Local Tip! For an extra special experience, pick up authentic Mexican food at La Super-Rica and bring it up to the mission for a picnic. (Don't forget La Super-Rica is cash only)

There are so many wonderful tasting rooms, and it really just depends on your preferences and which area you want to tackle. I mention Roblar and Beckmen because they are close to us and easy to get to by bike. If you want to have a fun outing without getting in a car, take our cruiser bikes, turn right out of the gate and head towards Dunn School. You can go through the school by following the road (first entrance on the right) all the way to the last section of homes, follow the track on the right and then hook up to the little dirt path again. From there, turn left on Roblar and you'll shortly see the entrance. They also serve Breakfast on the weekends. This is a fun itinerary to go to breakfast and then wine tasting.

Channel Islands National Park offers premier outdoor activities, including kayaking through sea caves, hiking scenic trails (like at Anacapa or Santa Cruz islands), snorkeling in kelp forests, and wildlife spotting, such as dolphins, sea lions and migrating whales. Visitors can also camp on the islands or take day trips from Oxnard or Ventura via Island Packers. Take a boat trip out to the Channel Islands to see the Galapagos of the Pacific! In 2025 we went whale watching and while we did not see any whales, we did see a megapod of dolphins... a truly National Geographic moment! There are 5 different islands to explore! All areas of the islands can only be accessed by foot, private boat, or kayak. The islands have great hiking and history, we hope you will have a chance to experience. Petite and pretty, Butterfly Beach is a favorite beach in upscale Montecito. It sits across the street from the elegant Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara one of Santa Barbara's top beach resorts. People-watching is prime here–keep an eye out for celebrities strolling along the bougainvillea-lined beachfront promenade. At high tide, the shore almost disappears beneath the froth and fizz of the surf, but at low tide, this is a lovely spot to soak up some rays and walk your dog; you can also let your pooch run leash-free. Thanks to the gently sloping shore and typically calm waters, swimming is also popular. Butterfly Beach is also a romantic spot to watch the sunset. When it's not too busy, you can usually find a parking spot along the street.

You won't find much in the way of amenities at this lovely beach, which is a bit ironic considering that it's across the street from the esteemed Four Seasons Resort the Biltmore Santa Barbara. Nevertheless, the sweep of sand is ideal for lying in the sun, and the ocean proves irresistible to swimmers. Butterfly Beach is very walkable and overlooked by the fabulous Coral Casino. The rock wall that lines the upper part of the beach provides a great seat and vantage point, even on not-so-sunny days. Another perk to Butterfly is that it looks west, unlike most of Santa Barbara's south-facing beaches. For that reason, it's one of the area's best spots for sunset views and long strolls. Street parking is first come, first serve.

Applauded by "Dr. Beach" for its beauty and quality, Carpinteria also finds approval with visitors, who love the calm waters that result from a protective reef. Swimming is safe for adults and little ones, and the beach is great for sand play, exploring tide pools and fishing. Restrooms, picnicking areas and camping facilities can be found in the vicinity, and marine mammals pass through in winter and spring. Just 10 minutes or so south from downtown Santa Barbara, this beach lies at the end of one of Carpinteria's main streets, Linden Avenue. Pick up some food and shop for souvenirs before or after your beach trip.

Hendry’s Beach is one of the few dog beaches in Santa Barbara, with one end “on leash” and the other “off-leash”. Currently there’re lots of rocks at the tide line which makes for interesting tide pool hunting. Enjoy dining at the Boat House Restaurant.

Solvang has a rich Danish heritage. Founded by Danish immigrants in 1911, Solvang boasts authentic architecture, thatched roofs, old-world craftsmanship and traditional windmills. Named by Sunset magazine as one of the "10 Most Beautiful Small Towns in the Western United States," Solvang's rich heritage dates back to 1911 when adventurous Danish-Americans traversed the plains from Iowa to establish a settlement in the golden state of California. They purchased 9,000 sun-drenched acres of the former Rancho San Carlos de Jonata and situated their new community adjacent to the historic Old Mission Santa Inés. To preserve and promote Danish culture, the founders constructed a Danish folk school and church (the building now houses Bit O'Denmark Restaurant, 473 Alisal Road); then built Atterdag College, which opened in 1914 and educated through 1970 (now the site of Solvang Lutheran Home, 636 Atterdag Road). Santa Ynez: A Sophisticated Cowboy Town In the vintage township of Santa Ynez (population 4,418), it’s sometimes hard to tell if it’s 2014 or 1884 with its period-style false-front building facades housing shops, saloons, feed stores and random horses hitched to posts. However, this rather sophisticated cowboy town also boasts plenty of conveniences for modern-day trail riders. A variety of restaurants serve up delicious options from casual burgers, pancakes, and waffles (beloved by locals), to steaks, seafood, regional Italian fare, Latin fusion and locavore cuisine. Modern shops and galleries line streets with horse-shoe embedded crosswalks. Los Olivos: A Picture Perfect Country Town California history melds with modern-day wine tasting rooms, art galleries and upscale shops in this picture-perfect country town in the northeast part of the valley (population 1,132). Centered by an iconic flagpole, Victorian homes and businesses cluster nearby around the community hub at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Alamo Pintado Avenue. Vineyards, lavender farms, orchards, ranches and horse trails surround Los Olivos. This is a charming place to visit for a one-stop wine country experience. It’s a laid-back place where locals sit on wooden porches and chat with friends and visitors; and most people wear jeans, cowboy boots and casual attire. The town dates back to the 1860s, when the stagecoach route began to pass through. County Historical Landmark Mattei’s Tavern was built to house and feed those passengers and still stands today. Many historic structures hold distinctly modern enterprises where you’ll discover retail treasures or can sip local vintages at a tasting room (choose among more than 30 within a 5-block area). The annual Jazz & Olive Festival every June attracts name performers and creative olive-centric cuisine from local chefs. Dine at a casual café or gourmet restaurant. Just over the hill into the Valley, Los Olivos is mostly a wine tasting town. Small spot you can walk around on foot to at least 10 different tasting rooms. And just a short Uber ride away (15-20 minutes I think) so you can skip the driving and enjoy the wine.

Santa Barbara Mission and Museum, Santa Barbara Court House, visit the tower for panoramic views of downtown and the islands. Also step inside the Court House and view the murals. Soho Night club, great bands and dining. Hendry's beach and the Boathouse Restaurant. Santa Barbara Museum, with wonderful impressionist paintings and monthly international shows. Down town State Street, lovely stores and restaurants. The harbor wall and the marina, visit Brophy Brothers for a fresh fish meal, or dine El Fresco at their Fish taco Bar opposite the harbor marina. Sunday Morning walk along east beach and the ocean front and see all the artists and craft vendors. Take an afternoon stroll on the pier.
