Sightseeing

Take a drive North on the Golden Road and keep your eyes open for Moose, beautiful views of Katahdin, views of whitewater rafters enjoying their Penobscot adventure, and Ripogenus Dam. There are spots to stop along the Penobscot River, including Abol, Horserace, and the Cribworks. Drive carefully as this is a private road and you may encounter logging trucks, especially during the week. They always have the right of way, and will take it. While it was deemed the 'Golden Road' because it was quite expensive to pave a logging road, it is returning to a more typical logging road feel, with some dirt parts and some paved.

The view of Katahdin from Abol is pretty spectacular. The bridge crossing the Penobscot has a walking bridge that serves as a snowmobile crossing in the winter and a popular tourist spot in the summer. It is a great place to stop, check out the store and snap some photos of Katahdin. If you come at the right time, you may also spot some white water rafters heading down the river.

Cross the Telos Bridge and park in the lot on the right. Take a walk on the path along the river and sit and enjoy the sound of the Penobscot, and around 2pm each day, watch the white water rafters take on the class five 'cribworks' rapids. We often pack a picnic or grab a sandwich from the North Woods Trading Post.
