Parks & Nature

These are some of our favorite hiking trails in Welches and the surrounding Mt. Hood area. Travel time from the Huckleberry Chalet to each trailhead or landmark is noted. Many trailheads require a parking pass between May 15th and October 1st. Daily passes, are called “National Forest Recreation Day Pass and cost $5. Annual passes are called “Northwest Forest Pass” and cost $30. These are honored at other Northwest Forest Pass sites in Oregon and Washington. E-day passes can be filled out online and printed if you know the dates you plan to use it. https://www.discovernw.org/recreation-passes.html Sno-Park Pass: Required at posted winter recreation areas between November 1 and April 30. Annual $25, 3–day permit $9, and a 1-day $4. Order online for delivery of pass. Annual pass orders receive interim pass by email and hardcopy will be delivered. https://dmv2u.oregon.gov/eServices/_/ Both passes can be purchased at the Hoodland Thriftway in Welches.
Our favorite hike is the Ramona Falls hike, it's about 7 miles round trip and leads you to a beautiful cascading waterfall. It is typically accessible from April to November, it's best to go in later summer to early fall when the river you must cross to get to the trail is at it's lowest. There are no foot bridges across the river so use caution when crossing. There are downed trees that you can walk across to avoid the water. Travel time: 28 minutes from the Huckleberry Chalet

We highly recommend the Wildwood Recreation Site because of it's educational interpretive signage, beautiful riverfront trails, and sandy river frontage. It's particularly great for groups with kids or seniors as some of the paths are paved and accessible for strollers or wheelchairs. The Cascade Streamwatch trail, a 3/4 mile paved loop, is our favorite because of the quality educational displays, picturesque views of the Salmon River and a fish viewing window below stream level. The Wetlands Trail is an accessible, 3/4-mile loop trail leading to the difficult Boulder Ridge Trail, which is a 4.7-mile hike up the steep slopes of Huckleberry Mountain into the Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness. This 1/2 mile roundtrip hike is easy and beautiful making it great to do with the whole family. You'll follow a path alongside Little Zig Zag Creek until you reach Little Zig Zag Falls. Check out the signage along the way that explains some of the history of the area and how the negative ions of flowing water are good for you.
