Founded in 1981, the idea of Kapodistrias Museum was first conceived when Ioannis’ great grandniece, Maria Kapodistria, bequeathed the estate to three societies. Despite accepting the mission of curating and exhibiting the personal effects and period furniture of the family, the cultural organizations of the Reading Society of Corfu, the Philharmonic Society of Corfu, and the Society of Corfiote Studies did not have sufficient funds to uphold the museum. Corfu Museum of Asian Arts is the only museum in Greece, which is dedicated to art and antiquities of Asia since 1928, the year of founding. It is housed in the Palace of Saint Michael and Saint George on the Greek island of Corfu. The Palace is the largest and the most significant building of the English rule period (1814 – 1864) and one of the greatest monuments of neoclassical architecture in Greece. There is no shortage of historical buildings in Corfu, but rarely do you find one removed from either political or physical use during war times. The predecessor of Achilleion Palace, the villa of Mon Repos was built in 1828 for the British Commissioner Frederick Adam, who gifted it to his Corfiot wife, Diamantina Palatino. The intimate dwelling is hidden within a park of the same name, its tree-enclosed and shore-facing design shrouding the property in private tranquility. You would not expect such an idyllic island to have been the site of much resistance, expanding from defense fortifications that date as early as 6th century AD. As you sail in between the Gulf of Kerkyra and Garitsa Bay, Corfu’s namesake greets you in the guise of an artificial island. More at https://corfudiary.com/cultural-sights/old-fortress/

Royal courts and wealthy classes tend to intrigue, luring us in with glimpses of lavish lifestyles and translated wealth by making public their estates. Still, many of these mansions and palaces and residences are architectural delights in their own right. Their residents, past or present, are more like fillings of an already tasty cake. Where there is an Old Fortress follows a newer iteration – after all, with Corfu being such a highly-prized island, defense is a blazing priority. The New Fortress wedges the old town of Corfu between its massive walls and those of its older compatriot. Built in the 16th century during Venetian rule, it is poised above the dated port, a standing sentinel on the hill of Agios Markos. More at https://corfudiary.com/cultural-sights/new-fortress/
