You have to see the artistry that has gone into the creation of this portrait of Mandela. It is a wonder.

Ardmore Ceramic Studio is a must for all who enjoy pottery and art galleries. See the local artists at work in their pottery studio, behind the gallery and have coffee or tea in the nearby restaurant. Ardmore ceramics have been bought by collectors from around the world - and can be seen in Buckingham Palace. It is not often that one finds things to truly marvel at and this is one right on our doorstep.

Take a trip up the Dargle and turn onto the dirt road to Fort Nottingham for a beautiful scenic drive (about 40km) past farmlands and have a Saturday or Sunday lunch at Elsamics (you HAVE to book). Then carry on to Nottingham Road and back down on the twisty R103 to Lions River. This farming countryside is beautiful. You will lunch on the veranda of Roy and Val's home overlooking their garden. The food is delicious and after you have eaten you can take a short stroll to the museum. Take your own drinks. No under 12 year olds.

Caversham Mill is one of my favourite restaurants whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner. From your table you can drink in the sight of river, bridge, hillside view and listen to the sound of a cascading river. I have found the simple menu to always be delicious, with the vegetables cooked to the perfect crunch.

Il Postino is a favourite of my husband's for the live music on a Friday night. They must have the longest pizza menu that I have ever seen and they are delicious - with a thin base.

We are about 5km from Piggly Wiggly. A great place for breakfast and shopping! Whether it be art, linen, chocolate, wine, bakery, toys, gifts, wonderful soaps - you will find it there. And it is open for lunch too! You can even do the Piggly Wiggly Park Run on a Saturday morning - do not be taken in by the "dare I say a bit boring start" it ends on a very high note - save your energy - and then enjoy breakfast!

Take a 2.5km trip to the Steampunk coffee shop and a view of the 'metropolis' of Lions River! Careful you don't blink you will miss it! Next door is 'The Platform'. Wonderful to see what creatives can do with a neglected station. Definitely worth a visit.

The Barn Owl is a new favourite for excellent coffee and unusual breakfasts and lunching (great for banters and others). A spectacular view of the Midlands and great on a cold, sunny day because of all the windows. Try it. It adjoins Groundcover for all things leather - shoes, bags, skins.

My Guidebook would not be complete without a recommendation to visit the Treatery if you happen to be in Howick. My favourite for breakfast tea or lunch. Closes at 4. Admire the shops next door or visit the Blackwood Nursery.
