Sightseeing

Lots of places to visit - charming fellside villages, walks and bike rides. Highlights near Appleby: The Pikes - Murton, Dufton and Knock - not too strenuous - but rewarded by fine views. High Cup Nick - "the Grand Canyon of the North" - perhaps a bit of poetic license! But a great walk from Dufton with a cosy Pub at the end (or the beginning!) The Stag Inn. Pretty Fellside Villages, including Dufton, Milburn and Melmerby (home of the Village Bakery)

The County of Northumberland usually best known for it's coast and castles extends close to the property and in particular the Allen Valleys - an overlooked area of natural beauty. Allendale means "the valley of the shining water" in Celtic, and was known for it's silver deposits. Well worth a visit on foot, pedal or by car.

One of the "natural wonders of the area - close to Appleby. A great walk with the promise of a nice pint (or whatever you fancy) at the lovely Stag Inn, Dufton. Made (more) famous by a recent Julia Bradbury TV programme

For those who enjoy a challenge, this is one of the hardest bike rides in the Country, not long but steep! It's worth a trip in the car too. Great Views. There is also an optical illusion - when heading up around a few corners after the fell gate - the road appears to head downhill along a small valley edge - it is actually (slightly!) uphill.
