THE BEAUTIFUL VILLAGES OF NΑXOS

In this village of Naxos you will lose the sense of time! | XALKI The old commercial capital and administrative center of the island, just 17km from Chora, in the Tragai basin, is a surprise in exploring the Naxos inland. The village, surrounded by olive trees, stands out mainly for the magnificent architecture of its buildings, and although it is small, believe me you have to make several stops pointing to the main pedestrian street and the surrounding cobbled streets! www.idiscover.gr/chalki-to-xwrio-tis-naxou-pou-tha-se-xasete-tin-aisthisi-tou-xronou/

The largest village of Naxos does not spread to some of its beautiful beaches, but at an altitude of about 400 meters, between two hills, at the foot of Mount Zas. Plenty, gorgeous, busy and active, the beautiful Filoti with its 1,800 inhabitants is one of the most active and interesting hotspots of the Greek region. Its name is believed to be of Ionic origin and ancient origins. It consists of three settlements, Rachidi on the right, as one faces the village reaching from the main road, Clefaro on the left and the newest Lioir opposite them. The look is shortened to the village square, the so-called Bridge, dominated by a plane tree over the century. The first dominates the church of Panagia Filotitisa, a basilica built in 1718 in the place of an old Byzantine church and dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Nearby, Barotsi tower rises, reminiscent of the Frankish rule on the island. Paved alleys in labyrinthine formations, arches and stews, sheds, make up the fascinating mosaic of the village, where the Cycladic tradition remains vivid and is reflected in every corner. The cultural wealth of the village is evident even to the visitor who arrives in Filoti for the first time. In the cultural centers, the sights, the Heroon with the 100 names of dead Filoti, the Primary School, the Fountain of Arion. also you can eat traditional food at BABOYLAS ,KARAVASIOLIOS and delicious dishes and pizza in PLATANOS. www.youtube.com/watch?v=klat3oTzkRM

Apeiranthos is a village different from the rest of the island. The local dialect, habits and customs of the villagers came from Sfakia and Anogia of Crete. The move of the Cretans to Apeiranthos came shortly after Daskalogiannis' revolution in 1770, which was drowned in blood by the Turks. The inhabitants of Apeiranthos are cordial and creative. One particular idiom of its inhabitants is that in their free time they form local mantinas. Apeiranthos is the village with the most museums in Naxos. There you will find the Archaeological and Geological Museum, the Museum of Natural History, the Folklore Museum, the Museum of Children's Culture of the Aegean, the Museum of Fine Arts but also the largest library of the Cyclades, the library of N.N. Tower of Athalassa Near Agiassos there is a tower, the tower of Athalassa. In the very old years, in this tower lived a noble family and had a daughter. Their daughter was very nice and chasing each other to get his wife. One morning her father was on the porch and saw armed men coming. Her father immediately realized that they were coming for his daughter. The father couldn't do anything for his child, all he told him was to leave and go into hiding. The frightened girl took the brook - brook of Mersinos, which was guarded by leaflets and went out to a cave that had two pictures inside. One of the pictures was of Our Lady and she was named Panagia Spiliotissa because she was in a cave. But the men followed her and left and from there she hid in a tree and said: - My Lady, save me this time, and I'll make your face. The men passed by her and no one saw her, as if they had been blinded by the Virgin Mary. Immediately he came and made the face of the cave and became a church and still remains today. www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=11&v=gVH3RN2aCgg

THE BAZEOS TOWER On the 12th Km of the main road linking the capital city of Naxos (Chora), with the inland (Halki, Filoti), the Bazeos Castle dominates the land leading to the seacoast of Agiassos. The tower dates back to the 17th century and belongs to the most typical group of monuments in Naxos, dating from 13th to the 18th century. The reason for the common presence of such buildings has its sources in the social and historic conditions prevailing in post-Byzantine years. Great uncertainty prevailed at the time in the Aegean, because of the frequent pirate raids that had not stopped since the Byzantine era and also because of the feudal system on the island, which after having being introduced and systematically applied during Venetian rule, survived during the years of Turkish rule. At first, this castle functioned as a monastery and was called monastery of the True Cross (“Timios Stavros”). In the first decades of the 19th century however, the last remaining monks abandoned it and in 1834 it became the property of the newly founded Greek state. For many years the castle offered hospitality to families of potters who lived there and practiced their tradecraft. Later on, by the end of the 19th century, the castle was sold by the Greek government and was bought by the Bazeos (Bassegio - http://www.baseggio.net) family, whose descendants are the current owners. In the Venetian tradition of the island, the family maintained its primary residence in Chora, while also using the tower as a summer residence and agricultural provisions storage area. Its last descendent, appreciating the importance and historical value of the building, continues its upkeep with particular care and aesthetic awareness. In 2000, the first phase of restoration was completed, through the exclusive use of private funds, under the supervision of the National Technical University (NTU) architects, Themistocles Bilis and Maria Magnisali. Since then it has functioned as a cultural activities space.

Castle of Apaliros A very important castle, built on a steep hill in the fields of Sagrios and Agiassos. According to scholars, it derives its name from the abundant "lumps" that grow around it. It was built in the early years of Byzantium, but it may have been a fortification since antiquity, since part of the wall is prehistoric. It was abandoned in the 13th century upon the arrival of the Venetians. When Sanoudus came to the island the castle was occupied by Genoese pirates. To force his men to conquer it, he burned his galleys so the soldiers had no choice: either take the castle and expel the Genoese, or die. After five weeks of siege, the Venetians of Sanoud occupied the castle of Apaliros and banished the pirates. Thus Sanoudus took the island and founded the Duchy of the Aegean in Naxos. Nowadays a large part of the strong castle walls are preserved with some towers, bastions, cisterns. Apart from the remains of the houses, there is the church of Agios Georgios, a two-storeyed dome with beautiful architecture. Some scholars date it to the 7th-8th century. There are other churches in the castle and climbing up there is a unique experience, as it offers stunning views of the south side of Naxos. www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIijkxcoQl4

The oldest olive tree in Greece in the center of the island, in the area of Adissaros, in a sheltered location and very close to a source of water, which is still raining. This tree - and to the contrary proof - is considered to be the oldest olive tree in the world and is characteristically called the "gerontolia" in the region. The gerontolia of Naxos has lost its original central trunk and today it consists of many trunks, which define an elliptical much larger, the perimeter of which is about 29.00 meters and its maximum diameter exceeds 10.00 meters. The age of this tree, based on its overall diameter, is estimated to exceed 5,000 years and this olive tree is safely classified in the mediterranean fruit variety "Thrombolia Aegean". The variety of "Thrombolia Aegean", which belongs to the big olive tree of Naxos, is the only known olive variety that can, under natural conditions, produce fruits capable of being consumed in their natural form by the trees, without suffering any at all. processing. That is to say, it fulfills one of the most important prerequisites for the domestication of olive trees by human collectors of that time. In any case, this Naxos olive tree dates back to the beginning of the world olive growing and proves the continuous cultivation of domesticated olive varieties in Greece, from pre-Minoan times to the present day. He also supports the hypothesis of the domestication - origin of the cultivated olive tree in the eastern Mediterranean and especially in the Aegean region, a theory first put forward by P. Anagnostopoulos in the middle of the previous century. Also striking is the fact that the kernels of the fruit produced by the gerontolis have the same macroscopic characteristics as the olive kernels found in different areas of the Aegean and Crete. Naxos olive tree is a living monument of nature, of global importance, which needs protection and promotion. Archaeological findings, kernels and olive fruits, in conjunction with the gerontol tree itself, bear witness to the cultivation of olive trees in Greece for at least the last 5,000 - 6,000 years. In particular, Adisarou's location in Naxos is the only place in the world where the same variety of olive has been cultivated for at least 5,000 years.

Source Adisarou Adisarou district is located at the foot of the Byzantine castle of Apaliros. In the old days there was a lively city with a palace, beautiful houses, churches and many springs. The fountain that is still built today on the wall of the farm where the perennial olive tree lives is called "Fountain of Adesaru". Its water, scarcely today, comes out of the earth and cools every passer-by, like the tall plane trees that are there. Also near the fountain and the olive tree there is a chapel, which has been their patron for nearly five centuries, Saint Isidoros, who is celebrating May 14th. According to tradition the source had too much water, which made a lot of noise in its passage. Residents of the area, fearing pirates, put on a glazed drimmon (a large round stone with many holes) to reduce the flow of water so that it would not be heard. The road to the "residence" of the olive tree, the spring and the chapel is a cobblestone paved road with indescribable beauty that is worth a visit. To visit the fountain of Adisaru you will follow the road to Agiassos and at a junction you will find a sign that says its name.
