Fun Grocery Shopping
Tips for cheap and easy cooking
This is the supermarket for the Turkish community in Enschede. Great fresh meats and vegetables - here we get our meat for barbecue - Their ready-spiced minced-meat ('adana') is very delicious, also their lamb-chops. Aks the butcher for 'marineren' and your meats will be ready to use. Fruit and veggies are very affordable here.

walks and bicycle tours near the Cabin
Walks and bicycle tours less then 15 min away by bike, from the Cabin. Mostly they're forgotten bits of former big farming or textile tycoon real estates. These private forests, though open to the public for tax benefits, are largely left untouched which makes them very authentic and pretty.
It's a half an hour walk from the cabin. If you take a bike, 10 minutes. At the Hooge Boekelerweg you pass the gilded gate of the castle and a little bit further down the road, from a small parking lot you can enter the forest around the estate. Best to keep your dog on a leash, as the house is guarded by its own dogs. The Boekeler dogs only make noise, so don't be frightened if they bark. https://goo.gl/maps/KgPkeBn6sKmNuxKS8

This is the old road from Enschede to Glanderbrug (and the German border). Now it's a lovely sand-road, only accessible by foot or bicycle. Tip: to skip the urban part of the route, take the bicycle untill where the Kersdijk starts and walk from there. https://goo.gl/maps/FE3qWJtnqbyBF2XA7

This is the Schukkinkbos, very characteristic for Enschede: a small, ancient, very beautiful and forgotten piece of forest and wetlands, with lots of fallen trees, wrapped around an authentic oval-shaped meadow and sided by a highway, a farm and several high-voltage pylons. The atmosphere is just gorgous and small deer also like it - you can find their beds here and there. It's a ten minute bicycle tour away from the cabin. When you get there: you'll encounter a few (thick) trees fallen over the path - just climb over them and explore. https://goo.gl/maps/vYaspgr9F3x5iQEN8

Only 14 bicycle minutes away from the Cabin, you might take a look at the horses at Stalhouderij Schouwink. The road leading there (and back) is nice and has several sideways branching off, that are worth visiting as well. You'll see pastures, farms, bits of forest etc.

The start of your forest walk here is half an hour away from the Cabin ( by bicycle). Very beautiful untouched forest, as it's still private property - It was the garden of a textile tycoon and is still owned by this family. But it's open to the public. https://goo.gl/maps/ZuczZEEJBoUWZZ51A

Beautiful culture lands, owned by private parties (I'm not sure who, probably a former textile tycoon), but it's open to the public, this saves them a lot of taxes. There are more of these around Enschede: very beautiful culture grounds, forest, greenlands with a huge house on it here and there. You can park your car here for a walk, but also go there by bicycle and tour over the premises by bike. Some of the buildings/houses are guarded by dogs (they bark but don't bite)

Here's a secret entrance to one of these rural private estates around Enschede that's open to the public. They're beautiful forest and culture-grounds, free to walk in. When you stand in front of the house, step 2 meters on the path to the house and then turn right, to follow the footpath. These same grounds have another secret entrance, opposite of Oldenzaalsestraat 615: a tiny metal fence-door in a thick green wall of trees.

On the picture, you see the Tea-house of Noord Esmarke, an old estate - you will find it on this lovely walk, starting very close to the cabin (10 min. by bike). After passing Castle Hooge Boekel, turn left to the Lonneker Markeweg. After a few hundred meters you'll see a path on your left (with a green sign that says 'open to the public'). On this terrain you'll find a lovely tea-house, a bigger pond, forest and streams with wooden bridges to cross on foot. Good wellnes resort, with a good restaurant. The venue is really old and lies beautifully in the landscape. IT has an outside swimming pool, several sauna's etc. - you can easily spend a day (21.50 euro) or evening (17,50 euro) here. Their tosti of 5,50 euro is a good lunch meal.

A fairly good sauna where you pay by the hour. If you manage to do a quick sauna round so you can leave within, or after, one hour, you pay only 6 euro's. I can't recommend their food and the Zen feeling is sometimes hard to find as everyone chatters in the sauna as they like, but the audience is usually cheerful and relaxed.

The most beautiful nature and swimming water near Enschede - though water can be shallow in the summertime. Dogs can swim here too in an assigned place. It's 18 km away, so you need a car or e-bike to comfortably get there. Lutterzand has natural sand dunes - once the sea was here. Now the river Dinkel flows through it.
