My favorite places for food
This is a must-see when you're staying in Ku'au– you're one minute away from one of the top rated restaurants in the country! Get a taste of the freshest fish you'll ever have, locally caught by fisherman including my dad, Alan Cadiz. I cannot emphasize enough the exceptional quality of not only the food, but the service, ambiance, design, and location of Mama's. If you have the budget, book a dinner in advance. If you'd rather walk over casually, I suggest the bar.

Flatbread has been a favorite since I was a grom. The pizza restaurant is great for families or casual nights out, or even ordering to-go. Inside feels like a real community gathering place, as they hold local fundraisers often. You can find seating by the windows and people watch (there are some interesting ones in Paia!), a quiet booth in the back, or reserve upstairs for private parties. There are great options for gluten free, vegetarian, and vegan diets.

Choice has a variety of organic and fresh smoothie bowls, salads and other dishes. Enjoy plastic-free dining "for here", but I recommend bringing your own container for a to-go option. Located on Baldwin Ave in the heart of Paia Town.

Kuau Store is just a minute walk away! Great if you want to grab food to-go and head to the beach or need some reef safe sunscreen. You're welcome to use the provided Pyrex as to-go container, just ask them if they can tare it first.

Not your typical general store... this is a historically rich and higher-priced restaurant that features local Maui art. Beautiful views for sunset and little town with other art studios. Just a quick drive from Paia.

Beaches to check out
Ku'au Plaza is as close as you can get to Ho'okipa for a living space. With several exceptional attractions, Ho'okipa Beach Park is a must-see. Depending on the time of year you're visiting, there are different main attractions. In the winter, big wave surfers charge the +40ft waves. In the summer, the tradewinds bring pro windsurfers from all over the world to practice and compete at this world-famous destination. From east to west, there is a spectacular lookout from the sea cliff down on the surf and waves crashing against the rocks– an ideal spot for spectating for big wave days. Down on the beach are dozens of turtles that come up to rest. They are serene and beautiful so please, respect wildlife and stay at least 9ft/ 3m away and no flash photography or loud noises. Straight out from the turtles is a wave break where you will likely see some skilled groms (kid surfers). There is sun, shade, sand, and tide pools.

Kanaha Beach Park is ideal for the whole family. This 88-acre park has showers, bathrooms, and plenty of parking. With over a mile of shoreline, there’s room for windsurfing, kitesurfing, swimming, and sunbathing. When you’re ready for a break, rinse off in a fresh water shower and picnic in the shade. Lifeguards are on duty all day.

On days that are too windy on our North Shore, driving over to the west side might be a good way to escape. Olowalu is on the road to Lahaina and I highly recommend it as a snorkeling spot on a calm day. You may see turtles, colorful coral, tropical fish and urchins. Remember to wear your reef-safe sunscreen and do not touch or stand on the coral! ECO TIP: Truly reef-safe sunscreen is zinc oxide based and is not in plastic. Watch out for greenwashing with "reef-safe/ friendly" stickers as they are unregulated and could be false.

My favorite yoga studio is just up the road from Paia. They host a range of classes throughout the day including morning yoga on the beach, dance classes, and workshops in beautiful studios or outdoors surrounded by foliage. There's a true sense of community from the teachers that really shows the authentic culture of Paia. They are also featured on the Class Pass app. The new island-style cafe serves breakfast and lunch with indoor and outdoor seating and no-hassle parking.

Road to Hana
The Road to Hana can be an all day trip, so I recommend starting early in the morning. You may choose to head towards Hana and turn around halfway through your day or do the full drive around Haleakala and back down. The ladder usually takes longer and requires a capable and small car. My list of recommended items to pack includes towels, slippers and closed-toed shoes, water, snacks or lunch, (reef safe) sunscreen, day pack, cash, and ginger candy or motion sickness meds if personally necessary. Always be wary of flash floods: they happen very quickly; get to high ground and avoid water if it starts raining. The road to Hana is not just about getting to Hana, there are several stops along the way so be prepared to stop. That being said, visitors tend to drive slower than the locals who live out there, so also be willing to pull over and let them pass. Enjoy and be safe!

Every Saturday morning from 7-11am. Dozens of farmers and local creators gather for great deals on local, organic produce, crafts, food, flowers, and very friendly people. Unique from the Kahului farmer’s market as it features more genuine and ethical products. “Oh the people you’ll meet!” The people are very friendly and have much local knowledge.
