This newish restaurant/gastropub serves small plate Japanese specialties at very reasonable prices. The space is small, but the servers are efficient. Some of the menu items (meat/vegetable skewers) are cooked over an imported charcoal grill (binchotan). If seated at the counter, you can watch how the cooks use small paper fans to control the grill's temperature. The last time I was there, servers served appetizers to customers waiting for tables. The restaurant is located in what is left of Sacramento's post-WWII Japantown neighborhood. Open for lunch 11a-2pm Tues-Fri; dinner 4-10pm Tues-Thurs and 4-midnight Fri & Sat. http://binchoyaki.com/
