If some freak climatic event ever brought winter hibernation to the Big Island, you could survive the lean season by storing the calories away after a single plate lunch at this institution. The origins of Nashville’s now-famous hot chicken date back to the 1930s. As local legend goes, a scorned woman was seeking revenge on her womanizing significant other, Thornton Prince, so she doused his chicken with cayenne pepper, hoping it would be inedible. But it turned out Prince loved it!!!! And the rest is history. So in this Hot AF tradition we present to you, Willie’s Hot Chicken.

Favorite Big Island Beaches

This small but gorgeous beach (also called White Sands and, officially, Laʻaloa Beach) has turquoise water, great sunsets, little shade and possibly the best bodysurfing and bodyboarding on the Big Island. Waves are consistent and just powerful enough to shoot you across the water into a sandy bay (beware: the north side of the bay has more rocks). During high winter surf the beach can vanish literally overnight, earning the nickname ‘Magic Sands.’ The park is about 4 miles south of central Kailua-Kona.

An expansive lawn area with tall palms and kiawe trees providing plenty of shade adorn the park, with lots of lush grass to go along with the small pockets of sand on the beach. It’s quiet here and almost never crowded. Like most Kona beaches, Pahoehoe Beach is a comfortable place for a picnic or to simply sit and watch the surf. There are plenty of picnic tables and benches scattered throughout the park.

Kahaluu Beach Park is a tiny sheltered cove on the west side of the Big Island right in the town of Kailua Kona. It’s one of only a handful of beaches in Hawaii with such a large tame fish population. Punalu’u beach is the most famous black sand beach of Hawaii. Another reason for the popularity of this beach is that you can often see endangered Hawksbill turtles and green turtles basking in the sun on the beach. The turtles basking in the sun are Hawaiian green sea turtles (Honu). You can sometimes also encounter the more rare Hawksbill Turtle (Honu’ea) in the water but not basking on the beach. Fun turtle trivia: sea turtles almost never bask on the beach. Several species of green sea turtles do this but only at a few locations worldwide. Hawaii is one of those!

Snorkeling Two Steps is definitely one of our favorite locations in all of the Hawaiian Islands. We have snorkeled here many, many times. We love it because there is sea life in abundance, some healthy coral, and amazing topography to explore in a variety of depths. It is a fairly protected bay with a lava rock shoreline, and seems to have good snorkeling conditions most of the time, but if the wind or swell is big out of the south or west, please come back another time.

In old Hawai'i, if you had broken a law, the penalty was death. Perhaps you had entered into an area that was reserved for only the chiefs, or had eaten forbidden foods. Laws, or kapu, governed every aspect of Hawaiian society. The penalty for breaking these laws was certain death. Your only option for survival is to elude your pursuers and reach the nearest pu'uhonua, or place of refuge. As you enter, the great wall rises up before you marking the boundaries between the royal grounds and the sanctuary. Many ki'i (carved wooden images) surround the Hale o Keawe temple, housing the bones of the chiefs that infuse the area with their power or mana. If you reached this sacred place, you would be saved. Today, you may visit Pu'uhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park, and still feel the spirit of peace and forgiveness that continues to surround and bless this special place.

A short down and back up hike to the Captain Cook Monument. The monument was built in 1874 commemorating the fallen British explorer that was killed in 1779. The only way to reach the monument is by boat, kayak, or foot. It is said that the water near the monument is one of the best snorkeling spots on the island. The hike down is easy enough. The slope is not too steep but watch out for any rolling rocks. The trail is partly shaded.

One of the most easily accessible waterfalls on the Big Island, Rainbow Falls is just a quick five-minute drive from downtown Hilo. On sunny days, rainbows appear in the mist of the 80-foot falls, making for some pretty magical views. The broad waterfall — nearly 100 feet in diameter — plunges over a natural lava cave and into the river below. When it rains, (which it often does in Hilo), the engorged Wailuku River makes the falls wider, muddier and louder. On these days, you won’t see the rainbows for which this spot is named, but the sheer volume of water and the accessibility of this spot for all ages make it a fun, quick and easy excursion.

The Hawaiian Vanilla Co. was established in 1998 while sitting around a dinner table with family discussing what we would consider growing on our newly purchased property along the Hamakua Coast of the Big Island. At the time we had two small children and had a vision of how and where we wanted to raise them. My mother-in-law, who is an orchid enthusiast, mentioned that vanilla might be the crop to cultivate. From that dinner conversation to today this journey has been an adventure beyond my wildest dreams. Being able to work along side of my wife and children and build this company together has been an incredible experience.

This place is a field of barren 'A'ā lava rock. It's a place to visit because of its importance in Hawaiian history. In 1819 Kekuaokalani and his wife Manono died in a battle here fighting to retain the old Hawaiian religion of Kapu after Kamehameha II abolished the Kapu System. Only about 300 people died in the fighting but the battle utterly ended the Kapu System and changed Hawai'i. Christian missionaries arrived a few months later and were, after a time, allowed to preach the Christian faith to the Hawaiian public who, at the time, had no religious faith. After King Kamehameha II and Prime Minister Ka'ahumanu embraced Christianity, it became the official religion of Hawai'i.
