Sumba Vacation Rentals

Just booked in Sumba

Made from natural materials the private bungalow with inside bathroom is a cool, quiet and beautiful place to reflect on amazing experiences with megalithic culture and broad open savannas. Big windows and folding doors let the gentle breeze flow through. Look out for the race horses training at the racetrack below.
The bungalow is made in the style of a Sumba Adat house, but with modern comforts and a sweet simplicity. There is a queen size bed with mosquito net, a bench, fridge and tea coffee making facilities. Small electric stove available on request.
  • I had an amazing 3 night stay at Praikamaru! I was picked up at the airport and as soon as I arrived was invited to a funeral in a nearby village. :) I loved staying in the traditional sumbanese house, the sunsets were beautiful, and loved having my breakfasts on the verandah. The best thing of all is that Sarah and her whole family are really lovely. I felt taken care of. Sarah was also very helpful in arranging logistics in Sumba, drivers. And was prompt to respond to my many questions before and after booking.

  • Great stay! Sumba certainly is not for first time Indonesia travelers, but I had a good time. Sarah's place is very peaceful. No AC, but with the windows open you get a really nice breeze. It's a very authentic Indonesian experience. Sarah is super knowledgable abouy Sumba culture. If you have any questions about where to go, Sarah can lead you in the right direction and even provide transport. Everyone is super warm and friendly in the village. Why spend a million rupiah on a tourist trap? Stay at this house! You won't regret it.

  • I am far beyond glad to find Sarah's guesthouse in Airbnb! It's situated in Waingapu city yet the surrounding atmosphere is peaceful and calm, but not boring. There are 'ikat' textile weavers within the compound and a horse race arena nearby. The bamboo hut is simple and charming, without compromising the comfort of a proper guesthouse (shower, fridge, reading lamp, water kettle available). The beaches are reachable by motorbike. But what makes this house really special is Sarah herself, her love and knowledge of Sumba and her lovely family. I'll definitely stay here in my next trip!

  • sara was a wonderful hist and she did the best to accomodate my stay.

  • Sarah and her family were super welcoming and helped us a lot to start our Sumba experience, such as rented a scooter and provided us very useful information what to do and where to go. The bungalow is lovely, quiet and it was clean and a huge balcony presents one with a gorgeous sunset. The dinner was scrumptious that we had with the family and Sarah bakes the bread in Indonesia:) I can recommend this accommodation to anyone, great value price.

Very comfortable and cosy colonial style house, located half an hour from Waingapu s airport. Large terrace with amazing view 180' on the sea, living room with us kitchen, 2 ensuites with half open bathrooms. Peaceful place, ideal to relax.....just watching the dolphins from our beach, or swimming with turtles. Do you like lobsters ?
Nested in a preserved nature, the property laid on 3 hectares land. Ricefields around the property, some fishermen, or farmers will welcome you. You probably will see the infamous white cow from Sumba. Don t worry, they are very peaceful !
  • We spent our last night in Sumba at Nadege's place. It was absolutely darling. We love the interior of the house, its clean and spacious. Across the house is beach bar that soon to be completed. The bar view is overlooking ocean. We will definitely come back here again at our next visit

Our bungalows (Beach Houses) are built in a natural, unspoiled coastline area. The bungalows are about 70 m far from the sea (with white sandy beach). In neighborhood is a traditional Sumbanese village to visit
  • I fell in love with Oro Beach House, it's remoteness, it's beauty, and the ever so friendly Fransiska and her team. They went above and beyond to make my stay a memorable one. I highly recommend staying here if you are after somewhere tranquil, relaxing, and remote. Cannot wait to get back!

  • Best spot for your stay at Sumba! Awesome hospitality with very good food. The houses are great. The owners help with everything. Oro Beach is the a real eco-"resort"!

  • Great place! Franziska and her lovely family are very nice and friendly hosts! Highly recommended!

  • This remote charming place is a must-stay when you come to West Sumba. The staff is friendly and the owners, Siska and Lukas - well, there couldn't be better hosts. The cottages are decently decorated and met all our need for a relaxing time. We will miss the walks at the empty beach and the evening talks with Siska and Lukas. Hope to meet you soon, guys.

    Calvari2016-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • Very beatiful place to visit very friendly owners. You should realise that Sumba is a remote island with very limited possibilities of communication, buying food/drink, etc etc. Before you go somewhere the owners advice you to fill your bottles with water. The houses are good quality. No warm water, but at the end of the day the watertank is warm so the water is ok. If you want to see how Bali was 40 years ago you should go there. Make research before you go what you want to see. The problem of tele-communication is also a problem for the owner so you better make the research yourself.

Kampung Raja Prailiu is a traditional village, known for Sumba Ikat weaving, megalithic tombstones and friendly people. This listing is for two private bungalows with their own bathrooms which are a comfortable and relaxing base from which to explore the culture and landscape of Sumba. Prailiu is in the main town of Waingapu, between the airport and the town, max. of 15 mins walk to most places
There are two Guest Houses, small versions of a traditional Sumbanese home. In each house a bedroom and bathroom extends out on to a lovely balcony beneath the alang-alang grass roof. With a view of the horse racing field and the mountains in the distance this is a cool, airy place to relax and chew some betel nut. Both Guest Houses have queen size beds inside a large mosquito net, and extra beds with mosquito nets can be provided. There is also a fan, fridge, coffee and tea making facilities and drinking water provided. Aircon is not needed as there are lots of windows and always a lovely breeze up on the hill. Breakfast is provided - choose from Western, Indonesian and Sumba style, and you are welcome to join the family for other meals (additional cost of Rp25,000/person). Kampung Raja Prailiu was the centre of the Lewa-Kambera Kingdom during Dutch colonial rule, and remains the cultural heart of Waingapu. Traditional ceremonial houses, mixed with more modern houses represent Prailiu as a centre for living culture, ancient customs adapting to a rapidly changing world.
Kampung Raja Prailiu is a ceremonial village located in the middle of a growing city. Ancient beliefs and architecture meld with modern life to create a warm and inviting atmosphere, where you can be as involved in daily village life as you like, chewing betel nut with the locals, learning to weave or cook maize meal for dinner.
  • Sarah is an excellent host, she will make sure you have a good time here. With one of us in the local hospital we had a shorter and different stay here than we planned, but Sarah was very helpful. The house is beautiful and located in an interesting surrounding. I would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Waingapu and interested in the local culture.

  • Sarah is the best of hosts! She picked us up from the airport, cooked us fresh bread and pancakes and helped out with all sorts of issues throughout our stay. The guest house is a traditional Sumba style house, which is lovely and cool despite the hot weather. Praikamarru is the perfect place to stay if you want to the experience of staying in Prailiu with your own space.

  • We had a great two-night stay in Sarah's lovely BnB in Waingapu. The romantic bungalow (Bamboo + thatched rood) is just a short walk from the house where Sarah lives but when you are at the bungalow, it's like you're alone on the island: great views from the veranda and only the sound of birds (okay, and some dogs). In the morning, a bag including our breakfast was already hanging on the front door. We rented a scooter from Sarah and discovered the town, including it's small harbour where you can enjoy freshly caught fish in the evenings. Would recommend anyone going here.

    Hugo2016-08-22T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great place to stay if you're interested in learning and exploring. If you can speak a little indonesian, you can learn a lot here, especially about the culture, lifestyle and history of the local area. The town center isn't too far away, and there are quite a few little kiosks within walking distance. The guest house has a small fridge, mosquito nets, a bakmandi for bathing and the balcony is really nice early in the morning for watching life go by. Sarah made bread for us every morning and we ate dinner with her and other family members several times. She helped us organise drivers for longer trips and printed us off a map of the area. She was a wonderful host!

  • Sarah was a great host. Highly recommend staying here to get an authentic experience of Sumba. The weaving of Ikat textiles in this village beautiful. Meals were delicious and there is lots to do and see in the area.

  • Sarah is a great and warm host. She's making sure every thing runs well for her guest. Her family is great too. The house even better than any guest house all around sumba.

  • We had a really great time at Sarah's place! Sarah is a great host, she made sure we were comfortable, invited us for her son's birthday party and was extremely friendly, as was her husband and family! Thank you for the welcome you gave us all! The small house itself is great, it is built as a small traditional Sumbanese house but including bathroom and a terrace with a lovely view! And the main house is just a short walk away, with always friendly people and lots of activity! We learnt so many things about Sumba! I hope to be back one day and strongly recommend this place!

    Florence2015-07-21T00:00:00Z
  • You wont regret staying in this house. It offers a unique experience of staying in Sumba. Several nights before, I stayed in a 3-star hotel - a "safe" choice. I only spend one night in this house. After staying in this house, I think I should have stayed in this house longer. I think it's better to spend some more time to have a walking tour around Priliu. Get to know about the culture and their hospitality. Too bad I only spent a short time here. Mama Rambu Margaretha has many story to share :).

You are looking at the Blue Room at Villa Amidala, which is one of the three available rooms at this property. Currently this is the only private villa on Sumba Island. Luxury is delivered by private swimming pool, 5-seater Jacuzzi, BBQ facilities, 3 meter white screen for projected home cinema, 65" 4K smart TV and surround sound system. We provide cleaning service, in house catering service three times per day, massage on request, motorbike and car rental, airport pickup and drop off.
Hand carved furniture with Kupang motifs give the entire villa a very unique appearance. Apart from spending time in the refreshing swimming pool and sunbathing, you'll also be able to relax in the 5-seater Jacuzzi on the terrace, while your dinner sizzles on the barbecue. Although the place is spacious there are only three bedrooms, the large living room is also home to the dining area and open-plan kitchen.
The villa is located in Waingapu's wealthy area. Your neighbors will be working in government offices and possess very prestigious positions. For the western eyes this might not seem so, from the look of the houses in the neighborhood, however don't forget, you are visiting a very under developed Island.
  • Beautiful place , a bit hard to find so ask ahead of time. Very clean and super nice staff. Would recommend

  • While traveling around Indonesia, I was truly looking for a piece of paradise, could not find it at Bali, or any other place. Sumba is not a common destination for a non surfer person like myself, little did I know that the island was going to be beyond my expectations, Arnoud, his staff and all the other guest were all the paradise I needed to find at that moment. So, if you're not into surf, this may be your place anyway. You'll have awesome home made food, and have rest like in no other place! Arnold rules!

    Carlos2017-04-30T00:00:00Z
  • A paradise that with all your privacy. You can see the most traditional life style around the place. Arnaud and the staff are so friendly and they can serve you very nice food. Their place is so close to the lovely beach. And the decoration and design of the house is very traditional. If you like surfing then here is your wonderland. Arnaud can bring you to different beach around the island for surfing. Even through you can't surf, you can still spend your lovely time at the white beach. It is really such adventure experience.

  • We had an enjoyable and memorable two-night stay with Nadege in this rarely visited corner of Indonesia. As advertised Nadege's property is not yet (and does not pretend to be) a hotel / resort. A stay here will suit travellers with a sense of adventure rather than those who want to lie by a swimming pool. Of course if you are exploring Sumba independently you will probably be of this type anyway. The property is isolated - in the community of Kadumbul, about half-way between Waingapu and Melolo. From the main road it's a 10-minute drive / 30-minute walk along sandy tracks (the whole landscape is African-style savannah). Once there, the location is stunning with miles of wild beach in either direction (only the occasional fisherman for company). Very clean water although a little litter at the high-tide mark (unavoidable in INA). Small waves with no current - rocky at low-tide - all enjoyable for confident swimmers (no lifeguards!). The house is about 100m back from the beach but view still excellent e.g. sunrise. Two big bedrooms perfect for a family or two couples. Beautiful bright decoration - big sofas and the most comfortable bed and bathroom we experienced in the lesser Sunda islands. Aircon but not needed. Wireless (but no actual network beyond it!). Good-sized fridge and kitchen fine for simple cooking. Nadege prepared a delicious French meal on our first night (very reasonable price). But for flexibility bring supplies from Waingapu (no restaurants / shops nearby). Moving around is the main challenge in this area. Nadege organised a driver to take us to the traditional villages past Melolo - she also offered scooter rental - and took us back to Waingapu at the end of our stay. With more time we might have explored public transport.

  • Matteo and I enjoyed 10 amazing days in Sumba, being guests of SHF. Our staying has been simply perfect, everything went as we expected and in some cases even exceeded our expectations. Our villa was entirely made in bamboo and well furnished, giving a sense of romanticism to our experience. The personnel took care of us in every particular, also organizing daily trips throughout Sumba, in order to enjoy the local people, the wonders and amenities that this place reserves. It is worth mentioning that all the students trained by SHF brought with their smiles, being proactive and wish of learning, an adding value to our holidays. In conclusion, we strongly recommend SHF, because in the meanwhile you are enjoying a luxury staying you may also provide a good support to the SHF's admirable aim.
