“Charming small pub at the heart of Laurie Lee's village (this was his local), Slad. 35min walk / 10min drive. Beautiful views across to Swifts Hill. Excellent English food. Booking necessary if eating. 'Uley', the local ale, is a must-try! ”

“Possibly the most authentic pub we have been in in decades. This is how pubs used to be. Wonderfully eclectic mix of people, great local beer (including Uley Bitter and Pigs Ear - both from Uley Brewery), great local cider, wonderful small lounge looking right across the Slad valley, apparently wonderful food (although we can't vouch ourselves), and wonderful history. This is where the author Laurie Lee of Cider with Rosie fame would retire with a beer or a cider. Definitely worth a visit if you can make it - plus great walking along the Laurie Lee Wildlife Walk (more of which in our Guidebook on Local Walks)”
