“Great place for white water rafting. While it isn't the best white water in the area (Check out the Green River for that), it is a great ride. Plan to spend some time in Bryson city afterwards. Check out Nantahala Brewing.”

Other Great Outdoors
“North Carolina's shimmering Nantahala River, located just outside Bryson City, NC, at 13077 Highway 19 West, Bryson City, NC 28713. This location offers river rafting through family-friendly rapids that are mild but exciting. The Nantahala features eight miles of practice on easy Class II rapids before splashing through the exciting Class III whitewater of Nantahala Falls. The Nantahala is also headquarters of the Nantahala Outdoor Center. Founded in 1972, NOC is located at the intersection of the Appalachian Trail and the Nantahala River in the Nantahala National Forest. Originally a roadside inn, the company has evolved into one of the largest outdoor recreation companies in the nation, hosting well over one million guests each year.  NOC's 500-acre adventure center offers whitewater rafting, four aerial and zipline activities, mountain biking on nine miles of private trails, and stand-up paddleboarding on Lake Fontana. In between activities, you can shop at one of NOC's four retail stores including NOC's flagship Outfitter's Store, eat at NOC's two riverfront restaurants. ”

Natural Feature
“Fontana Lake is a reservoir impounded by Fontana Dam on the Little Tennessee. The lake forms part of the southern border of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the northern border of part of the Nantahala National Forest. Depending on water levels, the lake is about 17 miles (27 km) long. The eastern end is the Tuckasegee River near Bryson City. The lake has many inlets into coves and islands created from former mountain peaks. Short of a multi-day hike, Fontana Lake provides the only access into the most remote areas of the National Park. When the lake is at the normal summer level, a boat may be used to access remote trailheads such as Hazel Creek. From the observation tower on Clingmans Dome, on a clear day, the lake can be seen nearly a mile below. The lake is used by avid fisherman, boaters, oaters, paddle boarders and at-water kayakers. Some say that Fontana Lake offers the best smallmouth bass fishing in the United States.  Learn more about camping at Fontana Lake. Check with North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission at www.ncwildlife.org for fishing regulations specific to this river. ”
