Places to stay in Staindrop
Our house, Whispering Waters, contains a private, contemporary two-room apartment suite, with its own private access via an exclusive south-facing deck, 21 mtrs above the tree-lined River Tees. Lying in bed, it's as if you’re in a treehouse with the treetops visible outside the window. Situated in Lower Teesdale (on the A67, between Barnard Castle and Darlington - around 7 miles/11km from each), Whispering Waters is a house without neighbours, immediately adjacent to, and above the River Tees.
The suite comprises a double bedroom with king-sized double bed, a modern shower room, and a living room. The latter has tea and coffee making facilities, a small fridge containing fresh milk, water, juice, and light continental-style breakfast (please let us know if you have any specific dietary requirements). The lounge area can be provided with a foldout single bed. If you need that, let us know and we'll see what we can arrange. There is a TV and free WIFI.
The village of Gainford is a five minute walk away with a general shop, a butcher, post office, hairdressers, cafe, fish and chip shop and a pub. There's also a pretty village green and other beautiful walks along the river. There are a number of quality restaurants less than ten minutes drive, including the only 2* Michelin restaurant in the North East, The Raby Hunt. Other local attractions (all within a fifteen minute drive) include the independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants in the Teesdale town of Barnard Castle, which also houses the amazing Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle (a full-sized French chateau in a medieval English market town). The remarkable Raby Castle is also close by. Darlington town centre (with its main-line railway station) is a twenty minute drive away, as is the North Yorkshire market town of Richmond. Ten minutes beyond Barnard Castle, into upper Teesdale, you enter an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and what is known as England's Last Wilderness, which includes one of Britain’s highest waterfalls, High Force. There are wonderful walks all over Teesdale, with some spectacular views.
  • I would highly recommend this stay as bill and the surrounding area are amazing and definitely worth the low price they carge.

  • Great stay, highly recommend.

  • We really enjoyed our stay at Bill's place. The location was perfect for what we planned to do, from taking trips into Barnard Castle, up to High Force and exploring the local area. The place was easy to find, just a short distance from a friendly village, with even nicer fish and chips. We found the communication to be good in the lead up to our stay, so we knew exactly what to do on our arrival. The privacy was good, and there were lots of nice touches throughout the rooms. We would really recommend Bill's place!

Recently refurbished miners cottage in the hamlet of Hummerbeck, light and bright offering great comfort and easy access to many local attractions. Close to all the major supermarkets gives plenty of choice. Enjoy a little luxury with our superking master bedroom with the versatility of bunk beds and sleeping up to six guests with a quality sofa bed. Perfect for a short break, holiday or business trip. Your dog is welcome too so the whole family can come. Parking is directly opposite the cottage
Located on the A68 so please note there will be some traffic noise but it's mostly quite at night. The cottage is almost 120 years old and has low head space on the stairs, so take care particularly if you are tall.
Ideal if you are visiting Kynren, not far from Durham City and 30/40 minutes from Newcastle. Beamish museum is a great day out for all the family and Locomotion at Shildon there are many other attractions. Great local walks or cycling on pathways and bridleways or drive to the Pennines.
  • Me and a couple of mates stayed here whilst visiting Hamsterly forest. This is a lovely little place, modern, comfy and spotlessly clean! It has all the amenities you need and more. Communication was great and check in a doddle, couldn't fault it at all and will be staying here again next time we visit the area. Thanks Steve and Lynne for an even better than anticipated stay 🙂

  • This place is fabulous. It is spotless and gorgeous. Much more lovely than the photos suggest. It is unbelievably well equipped. Very sweet touches everywhere. We also enjoyed a lovely walk on the bridle path just along from the cottage.

    Michele2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • Steve and Lynne are amazing hosts. The property is clean and immaculately presented. I loved all the little extra touches like a complimentary bottle of wine and biscuits. They even put up a small Christmas tree to make it festive. I would whole heartedly recommend this property to anyone needing to stay in the Bishop Auckland area.

Beautiful little cottage with modern interiors. Great sized garden, perfect for use with the BBQ. Brilliant location within Teesdale. Hamsterley Forest, Raby Castle, Barnard Castle, High Force, Bishop Auckland and Kynren all within a short drive. With a ten minute walk to Cockfield, there is a friendly local pub, shops, butchers, takeaway and newsagent.
Our little cottage has just been refurbished, with underfloor heating throughout the ground floor making sure the house is always at a cozy temperature. The downstairs space has been maximized using a spiral staircase to get you upstairs to the big open-plan bedroom and bathroom. The kitchen has been extended making room for a dishwasher, washer/dryer and plenty of storage for lots of foods! We have a bbq that guests are able to use when they please, we just ask that you make sure to put the cover back on once you have finished with it. The garden is a great space to chill in the evenings or to sit outside and enjoy the peace and quiet through the day.
Kynren is a 15-minute drive from the cottage.
  • Extremely clean, brilliant little touches

  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Emily’s cottage, the pictures don’t do it justice and you have to experience it in the flesh. A lovely cosy little pad with everything thought about and some lovely touches. Would definitely stay here again.

  • Brilliant cottage, perfect for our family. Very comfortable and stylishly finished. Emily’s thoughtful welcome pack is also really useful See you again

    Chris2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic, beautiful and stylish little terrace / cottage. Beautifully clean which always brings a smile to my face. We will be back to spend some more time at this stunningly presented little gem.

    Michael2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • Emily's place is lovely it's just the right size so you don't feel on top of each other but you still get that cozy cottage feel with all the little extras. The underfloor heating was a dream, the bed was super comfy and the TV was easy to use. Wish we could have stayed longer than one night. The garden is also perfect for dogs but just be careful if you have an escape artist! As it is semi open at the back which leads onto an open field which is enclosed and has no livestock in it. Hope to stay again in the summer, when the weather gets better! 😊

    Megan2020-02-16T00:00:00Z

  • Gemma is a great host and very attentive with super speedy replies! We went on a couples getaway without two fur babies for 2 nights. We wanted great walks on our doorstep ✅ and a cosy cottage to get back to ✅, this place has it all! Highly recommend, especially for dog parents and this place even has a doggy dressing gown! A few steps from the gate is a gorgeous walk down along a stream, a short drive away is barnard castle and high force/low force which I strongly recommend. Would definitely recommend this little gem, and will definitely be returning asap!

The cottage is spotlessly clean and has everything you will need and the decor is really lovely. It’s the perfect place to go with dogs and Gemma has thought of everything for them. • The pictures of the apartment don't do the place justice as its larger than it looks. The apartment was clean, well furnished and comfortable (the beds were extremely comfy). The hosts thoughtfully leave cereals, milk, tea, coffee and sugar for their guests. So when we arrived it was brilliant to be able to have a cup of tea after the long journey without having to go to the shops. There is a well stocked Spar next door and 2 massive supermarkets (Tesco and Sainsburys) 5 mins drive away if you need additional supplies. The apartment block is very secure and there is an undercover parking space assigned to the apartment. I found the parking space a little tight as i have a toddler to get out of my car (which is wide anyway), but there was ample parking on the road which was an additional couple of steps, so parking is not an issue if 2 cars were visiting. I could also see the car from the apartment window. The apartment was perfect for our needs and I will definitely be returning.

    Claire2020-02-20T00:00:00Z

  • Clean and tidy, ideal for our needs, would stay again next time we are in the area.

  • Despite being outside Bishop Auckland which is the city of reference, the accommodation is very well served by public transport, bus 6, which connects Cockfield to Durham (county seat), passing through the Bishop Auckland bus station. This means that from West Auckland where Lynn's apartment is located, it is easy to reach the beautiful areas at the foot of the Pennines as well as the sea of Seaham or Hartlepool. Lynn's apartment is very functional and comfortable. Lynn and David are really very kind and helpful and so we will be back.

    Marco2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • The apartment was a perfect place for me to stay whilst visiting my daughter and grandson. Collecting keys and getting in was very straight forward and I really appreciated having a private parking space. The place felt cosy and had everything I needed. As others have said there was a little bit of street noise at the front in the lounge but the back where the bedrooms are is very quiet and I didn't get disturbed at all. The place was very clean and the bed very comfy. I would definitely stay again. Thanks for everything Emma.

    Darren2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed as a group of four for a night, we didn't spend much time in the flat but it was really clean, and had everything we needed

    Victoria2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • Chris is a fantastic host and the apartment is great. This was a really last minute booking but Chris still managed to go to the property in the morning to make sure it was warm enough and even offered an early check in - how thoughtful! The apartment is stylish, comfortable, well equipped and immaculately clean. The self-check in and out process is simple and secure and the parking is very convenient too. We had an excellent lunch at the Winstonberry Cafe which is a few minutes walk from the apartment (if it had been open on the Sunday we’d have definitely gone back) and even nearer is the pub across the road, which we didn’t make it to on this visit but will next time - we’re already looking forward to staying again soon.

Boot and Shoe is beautifully situated on the banks of the river Tees, 5 miles from Barnard Castle in the pretty hamlet of Wycliffe. Outdoors an abundance of wildlife, private fishing and tennis court, indoors cosy wood stoves and all mod cons. Ideal for walking, cycling, exploring, culture and relaxing.
Boot and Shoe, once a cobblers and a pub, is an idyllic retreat on the river Tees. Relax by watching the river flow by - an ever changing view, cosy up next to the wood stoves, raid the libray and toy cupboard or head out for a bracing walk in unspoilt Teesdale. Our tennis court is available for guests use and there is also private fishing on the Tees.
  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We loved the cosy living room, the very comfortable bed and the riverside views. The cottage was very well equipped with everything we needed for our stay and thoughtful touches of homemade bread, biscuits and jam. The bird feeder was in constant use by the smaller birds but we also saw a sparrow hawk and a grey squirrel in the garden. We plan to return in the spring so we can enjoy the garden and nearby walks.

    Louise2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely cottage in a good location. Excellent for walking.

    Margaret2020-02-14T00:00:00Z
  • You will find Rachel friendly but she will leave you in peace to enjoy your stay. Everything you would need is there, just bring your self and provisions. You have a lovely little garden at the back looking onto the river and can see a fair way in each direction. At the front is a little garden looking onto fields with sheep, black sheep and horses. I needed at little bit of help as there was a storm when I was leaving and both Rachel and her husband could not have been better. Really beautiful.

    Diane2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • Country style, comfort and cleanliness. Good value for money.

    Mike2020-02-07T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay at the cottage - it’s got lots of character and is in a beautiful riverbank countryside setting. We loved watching the wildlife from the dining table as we had breakfast and cosying up by the fire in the evenings. The cottage has all the amenities you need and Rachel was a welcoming and thoughtful host. Highly recommended - a real treasure and we will definitely be back!

  • Lovely house with a garden leading to the beautiful river Tees. The wood burner was a particularly nice touch rounding off a very cosy experience. Rachel gave us a warm welcome, beyond that it was a very private, relaxing experience. Overall a great place to stay with a brilliantly cosy atmosphere and lovely polite hosts.

  • Lovely old house in a lovely area. Little tricky to find in the dark but Paul’s dad waited for me out on the road so I wouldn’t miss the turn. Very thoughtful. Beautiful room. Comfy bed. Hot shower. Couldn’t have asked for more really. Great stay and I would stay again. Xx

    Kim & Steve2019-08-29T00:00:00Z
  • Everything about this Airbnb was perfect. Paul replied to emails instantly fixing up my arrival and was there to meet me. The Edwardian house is large and grand. The bedroom is enormous, the bed comfortable, lovely view from the window. The kitchen is well equipped. WiFi. In all I highly recommend this property. Be warned, though, that the large monkey puzzle tree (araucaria) is no longer there! This being the landmark I was looking out for I drove past the house.

    Joanna2019-08-21T00:00:00Z
  • Paul was a great host and dropped us off at a nearby friends house. Paul is friendly and knowledgeable about the local area. His house is lovely.

    Ian2019-05-12T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful, comfortable place to stay with good facilities. Paul was great with communication and his dad Trevor was very helpful letting me in and showing me round. Had two lovely dogs (Jasper and Paddy) to keep me company :) Would definitely revisit if in that neck of the woods again. Highly recommend.

    Alexandra2018-11-29T00:00:00Z
  • This is a lovely, spacious, characterful house with two very affectionate dogs. We had the place to ourselves as Paul was away and we felt very much at home, eating in and spending the evening snuggled on the sofa with the pooches. The main issue for us when looking for accommodation was secure storage for our mountain bikes, and Paul's place is perfectly geared up for this. It's also less than a 10-minute drive to Hamsterley Forest, so all in all it worked brilliantly for us. Thanks again for sharing your home!

    Sarah2018-10-24T00:00:00Z
  • A gorgeous house. Paul is so accommodating and relaxed. The two dogs really are gorgeous. Next time I'm working in the area I'll be back!

  • This is my second stay at Paul's place. It's a beautiful house - it's comfortable and Paul makes you feel very welcome. His dogs - Paddy and Jasper - are two totally cool little fellas! I had an excellent night's sleep. Would totally recommend.

Probably the nicest cottage we have ever stayed in. Everywhere was decorated so well and was such a comfortable space we felt very at home. We would totally recommend this Air BnB to anyone!

  • Great place for a base to get out and about. Gorgeous views, house so comfortable and nice homely touches.

    Sharon2019-08-23T00:00:00Z
  • This was a lovely cosy cottage where we felt very at home. Great amenities and the host went above and beyond to provide basics and make you feel welcome. Great to arrive and be able to have a cup of tea as tea and coffee available plus a pint of milk. A few miles from the main towns but just what we wanted. Was very quiet but was next to a main rod. Although not too busy and didn’t affect us as no noise at night. Would have to be careful if you had small children when getting out of the car and limited space outside for children but a play area down the road.

    Judith2019-08-12T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely cottage in the beautiful English countryside. We stayed 2 weeks in this old (but recently renovated) cottage and enjoyed every day. Danielle and Mick are friendly and are great hosts, we can happily recommend them. If we chose again to stay in the Teesdales area, we will certainly check the availability of Tonchy's View first.

  • We visited in sad family circumstances but felt comfortable and relaxed in this lovely house and gardens. We hope to come again in better times later in the year. I can’t fault it.

  • Stayed as a grown up family of four with a dog. Suzanne gave very clear instructions for check-in, and was available to help with any queries. The house is stunning and feels like a stately home! Lovely and warm. Great countryside nearby.

  • Booked this for a location for film crew to stay and it was an absolute jewel. Ideally situated close to Darlington and Teesdale/Co Durham and North Yorkshire with easy access to the A1 and Darlington Railway Station, we couldn't have come across a more suitable location. Those staying at Snow Hall told me the place was clean and comfortable, neighbours were very friendly and supportive, which given our coming and going at all hours we were concerned about. Suzanne is quick to deal with responses and is also local so you won't feel hung out to dry if problems occur Would recommend Snow Hall to others wanting to stay in the region at a heartbeat.

    Ian2019-12-02T00:00:00Z
  • Great house for our break. Suzanne was really quick answering our questions, check in very easy and good location for walks in the area.

    Gail2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely stay at Snow Hall. An amazing huge Manor House in a lovely setting with grounds by the river Tees. No complaints whatsoever - a highly recommended Airbnb.

  • Fantastic space, spotlessly clean with amazing amenities that went beyond air bnbs I've stayed in before. The garden room was lovely for chilling in with the Autumn sun coming through the windows (the garden would have been amazing in the summer but was a bit cold for us in oct!) Great location with lots to do in the area. We were 3 generations and everyone loved the house and area! June was a great host, checking in with us. A fabulous stay!

  • For once the pictures are true of the house itself. Great property, had everything we need and extremely clean and tidy. June the host was fantastic with communication and had some great tips on where to go. Loved the place and will certainly be back.

    Dave2019-08-30T00:00:00Z
  • This is an incredible place to stay. The cottage was beautiful with incredible views and very well equipped for our family. The welcome box was amazing and beyond all our expectations, and June was lovely box at check in and check out. The location was great for exploring the north east -- we visited picturesque Durham, a variety of castles and high force waterfall, all in the four nights we spent there. We couldn't have asked for more!

  • Matthew’s house was a great place to spend the night after visiting Ruby Castle. It is in a quiet village at the heart of Durham County, near many historical sites. Matthew is an outstanding host and interesting outdoor guy. We really enjoyed talking with him and his children. He came within minutes when we had trouble figuring out how to turn the oven on, and quickly got us sorted out. If you are cycling (as we were), be aware that the two local pubs do not serve food. But there is a grocery store just across the road, and we were happy to take a break from eating out and cook our own meals.

    Cheryl2019-09-05T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent first Airbnb experience. Lovely cottage, homely feel to it. Highly recommend Matt's place. We would definitely stay here again.

    Georgina2019-09-01T00:00:00Z

  • Very high spec place, with so much attention to detail in every aspect of the stay - from fresh flowers straight from the garden, to delightful breakfasts, plenty of local information and a stunning room. Michelle is a superb hostess.

    Mary2019-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • Michele is a perfect host and put in time and effort to ensure that all our needs for taken care of. The pub next door was very obliging to my fussy vegetarian needs and the food was delicious. Michele's local knowledge was very helpful given that the area had many closed roads due to flooding. The accomodation was perfect and beautifully presented.and very comfortable. I would certainly stay here again.

    Heather2019-08-08T00:00:00Z
  • The room and Michele are a gem!

    Josette2019-08-02T00:00:00Z
  • Michele was very understanding as due to the inclement weather I cancelled my booking, she suggested that I recontact her at a future date to rebook. This is exemplary service and it gives me a chance to stay with her in the future. Thank you.

    Brian2019-06-12T00:00:00Z
  • The room was super comfortable and Michele was an incredible host, breakfast was second to none. It's a shame we didn't have time to see the gardens properly because they were incredible. We felt very at home and Michele went the extra mile to make us feel welcome. Thank you for a lovely stay, my dad and I had a great time and hope to be back next time we're working in the area.

We have a modern venue. Five separate bedrooms that can be hired all together or individually. All have bedding, storage and a vanity unit. Shared shower and toilets but very nice and clean. There’s a separate entrance next to the car park but most people use the main doors. The accommodation is self contained apart from the kitchen, which is within the main atrium. Plenty of parking and beautiful grounds make us unique to the area.
We have some fab attractions such as the Bowes Museum, Witham arts centre, Raby Castle and High Force. We are near lots of public footpaths and the River Tees. Plenty of unique shops await you in town. We are around 30 minutes to Durham, 60 minutes to York, the Lakes and Newcastle.
  • Rachel was a great host, very friendly and welcoming. Also very accommodating to all guests in our group, easily catering to vegan dietary needs.

Kingfisher cottage is an 1820’s traditional stone built miner’s cottage. Situated in a small valley next a beautiful river at the end of the garden, its very tranquil and relaxing. The garden is a great place to sit in the sunshine and listen to the river and the local wildlife during the day & during the evening. It’s also perfect for stargazing! Within easy reach of Kynren, a retail park, Durham (Uni), Barnard Castle & Bishop Auckland, Durham & Yorkshire Dales, it’s the perfect place to stay.
The whole property is yours to use including the enclosed rear garden and patio area. Lock box access so it doesn’t matter what time you arrive! I’ll send you the code and the house alarm codes before you arrive. The cottage has 3 floors with the kitchen & lounge on the ground floor, a double and a twin bedroom and the house bathroom on the second floor. The third floor has a twin bedroom and an en-suite shower room. High chair, stair gate and travel cot are available. The travel cot is in the walk in wardrobe. For health & safety purposes bedding isn’t provided for the travel cot. Our Face book page ‘Kingfisher Cottage Butterknowle ’ has loads of up to date information about local attractions and events in the area. There’s a guest cottage information file that includes the wifi code and there are lots of tourist attraction information brochures as well as maps for walking routes and cycling routes. There are lots of DVD’s to watch and there’s board games, lego, adult and children’s colouring in books and pens and both children’s and adult books to read. One large or two small dogs are permitted but are not allowed upstairs or on the furniture please. If you do go out please leave your dog in the kitchen. Dog welcome pack provided! There are several dog friendly pubs nearby and lots of great walks nearby. Please clean up after your dog in the garden!!! (Poo bags supplied) If you want to bring your bike there’s a secure lockable bike shed to the side of the property marked 35. There are lots of cycle routes and country lanes around and about and further afield. For an excellent biking day out, visit nearby Hamsterley forest. Strictly No Smoking throughout please. If you want to smoke please go outside into the back garden area. Initial wood is provided for the fire. Extra supplies can be purchased from the General Stores in Cockfield (also a tea room. Past the Co-op and on the left) or the nearby retail park. There’s a fire guard too in case you have children or bring the dog! The central heating is set to a timer. If it's not quite right then please contact us and we can alter it for you. We don’t want you to be too hot. It’s a pretty warm cottage especially with the Woodburner. The whole place gets warm quite quickly! A river runs to the back of the cottage at the end of the garden. You do get sheep and horses that like to cross the river and try to get into the garden!! You’ll see plenty of wildlife hopefully even the Kingfisher after which the cottage is named! On road car parking is available outside the cottage and is shared with the neighbouring properties. You’ll be able to park directly outside the front door and you can also park outside number 36. The cottage is on a country road so there are tractors and cars but mostly tractors! The road does get busy at peak times but during the day it’s pretty quiet.
The cottage is in a rural location on the outskirts of the quiet village of Butterknowle. It has an enclosed rear patio and garden area, with outdoor furniture and a bbq for those summer days! There is a secure shed where you can store your bikes if you wish to bring them with you. The area is excellent for walking and biking. It’s the perfect place to get away from it all and enjoy the quiet Durham & Yorkshire Dales and countryside. There’s a new cafe & farm shop (The Teesdale Cheesemakers) selling cheese just a mile or so up the road in Copley (Uphill so you might need the car!) There are 2 pubs within walking distance both located in the village however food isn’t served in either pub. You do need to walk a short distance along the country lane to get into Butterknowle so if it’s dark please bring a torch! The next village of Cockfield which is close by, has several pubs that do serve food and there is a takeaway Chinese and fish and chip shop. There is also a Co-op which is the nearest convenience store and the bus to Durham and surrounding areas runs to Cockfield. Cockfield is approximately a 2 minute drive away or a 20 minute walk (uphill). There are lots of walks and good cycle paths nearby. Maps in the cottage will be able to help you decide where to go. During the summer months Kynren is a night time outdoor show about the history of England and the local area. It's absolutely amazing and well worth a visit. Access is simple and is about a 15 minute drive away. There’s a large retail park approximately a 10-15 minute drive away. There you’ll find lots of large supermarkets, retail shops, restaurants, fast food restaurants and drive thru’s. Slightly down the road from the retail park is a lovely farm shop and restaurant, Broom Mill Farm, that sells homemade produce. Absolutely delicious food and a great Sunday lunch! Highly recommend. The Sun Inn at Wackerfield is another highly recommended pub with great food and huge portions. Another country pub that serves food is the Saxon Inn at Escomb. Again, delicious food and a dog friendly pub. The Cross Keys in Hamsterley is also highly recommended. If you are bringing children with you then there are lots of things to do to keep them occupied! In the cottage itself you’ll find books, colouring books, games, Lego, various toys & DVD’s. The back patio is fully enclosed with no traffic nearby. If you drive up the hill towards and through Copley approximately 5 minutes away, you’ll find a large park with swings etc for the kids! It’s located on the left hand side next to the road around the sharp bend on the far side of Copley. There’s also a huge play park in Eggleston behind The Three Tunns pub (great food) , Eggleston Hall & Gardens is a worth a visit with a great cafe about a 20 minute drive away heading towards Middleton- In-Teesdale....another lovely market town with local shops, church, pubs & a hidden children’s park!! As well as being in the perfect location for visiting Durham University, there are loads of attractions to visit all within a half hour drive. These include; Hamsterley Forest where you can follow the Gruffalo trail and play in the multitude of adventure playgrounds! Entry is free but you need to pay to park.. Adventure valley is suitable whatever the weather with both inside and outside play.. Hall hill farm is a great day out with things to do such as animal petting, tractor rides and donkey rides.. Locomotion is just a short drive away where you can visit the train museum for free .. Hardwick Park is another great day out with the kids with loads to see and do.
  • Lovely cottage with everything you need for a peaceful break. Lots of nice little touches and Adele was easy to get in touch with if we needed anything. Beautiful location with great view of the river and lots to explore locally with the kids in tow. Definitely recommend and will be back 👍🏻

  • We had a wonderful time here in this lovely cosy cottage. The Christmas decorations and little touches like chocolate and wine were an unexpected touch and it is so comfortable and spacious - a real tardis! I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this to anyone who would like a lovely break in the Durham countryside!

    Heather2019-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • Kingfisher Cottage is an ideal home in an ideal setting close to a beautiful part of the country. As soon as you walk in you feel at home, with the log fire and the sound of the stream in the background. The house had everything we needed and was spotless. The house is even better in reality and we wouldn't hesitate to stay there in the future.

    Paul2019-12-26T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful cottage with a lovely stove and pretty garden. Our family of 5 was very comfortable over the short break and our dog was very welcome. Highly recommend.

    Geraldine2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • This cottage is a gem. A nineteenth-century stone built cottage, it has been beautifully and imaginatively modernised, and is compact but with plenty of room. The garden overlooks a small river and woodland, with wild birds darting about. The cottage was perfect for us. Recommended.

Rectory Cottage is an entire self contained wing of our Georgian former Rectory dating from the 1730s. Outside there is a small private garden and covered parking. Inside there is a sitting room with open fire and T.V; a small but well equipped kitchen and a separate dining room. There are three bedrooms; a family room with double bed and day bed that can be converted to one or two singles, a double room with four poster and a single room. There is a bathroom and a shower room. WiFi available
We welcome well behaved dogs - there are plenty of enjoyable walks straight from the door.
Wycliffe is a tiny and picturesque hamlet on the south bank of the River Tees, with a medieval church. There is no through road so very little traffic and peace and quiet are guaranteed! There are several villages within a short drive with pubs that serve food; one is within walking distance for those who are happy to undertake a twenty to thirty minute walk! Five miles away is Barnard Castle a historic market town with all usual amenities and an excellent museum. Richmond, Durham and the Yorkshire and Durham Dales are all within reasonable travelling distance for days out.
  • Patricia’s place was perfect to host a family Christmas break and link up the relatives who don’t get to see each other much. We had plenty of room for 5 adults and a two year old staying and two extra adults joining for a meal. Everything we needed was there. It is homely, warm and cosy, even though it was a big and old place. I recommend bringing bubble bath and making the most of the roll top bath and the peaceful location. So relaxing! Loved having use of the collection of board games too. It is in the middle of the countryside but a short drive from towns with activities and places to eat, and lots of great places to walk in hills and by the river. The property is listed as having animals there, but we only saw dogs in the backyard out a window and a horse going through a gate, we never came into contact with them, and there was no noise or smell from them at all. Thanks for a lovely place to rest with family.

    Steve2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • A very comfortable, spacious country cottage in an extremely tranquil location, surrounded by wonderful countryside.

    Jon2019-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • A great place to stay. We did have any need to communicate with Patricia during our stay as everything was ready for us. Patricia had even left updated details of places to eat and shop that had altered due to a road closure. Nice touches included a simple selection of board games.

    Daniel2019-08-21T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely stay in this fascinating, characterful property. It is beautifully furnished, very well equipped and is in a secluded spot. It was very quiet at night and very private. There is plenty to do in the area, including walks from the door along the river to Egglestone Abbey and Barnard Castle. We really enjoyed our time there.

    Andy2019-08-18T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful accommodation furnished really well with lots of little touches. A true rural setting with peace and tranquility but spacious and well appointed. Will return again.

    Graham2019-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay at the cottage. It was clean, so cosy, perfectly located and situated in beautiful surroundings. There were four of us plus two under two staying during a very rainy period. The cottage was a perfect place for us to get dry, relax and have fun with the little ones. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone wanting to visit the area. We didn’t explore as much of the nearby walks as we would have liked but the countryside looked beautiful. Barnard Castle and Bowes Museum are super close and perfect mini visits but we also just enjoyed grazing in the house. Thank you for making our group annual trip so perfect.

    Holly2019-07-28T00:00:00Z
  • Rectory Cottage was a surprise because it had more generous proportions than the photos represent. It is furnished traditionally with good quality furnishings and furniture. We stayed for three nights but it equally would work well for groups looking for longer stays because it has the feel of a spacious family home rather than a cottage. The wifi worked fine and the host was an obvious dog lover and made me feel like my two were most welcome. My group did think it felt a bit luxurious.

Westholme is a family house and we would like guests to enjoy it. The Jacobean Hall has been the location for a BBC costume drama, music videos and photo shoots.
There is a sense of evolving history here - the room has elements from the late 19thC renovations (Rupert’s Great Grandfather) and Georgina has brought a 21stC illustrator’s flair to the room. The Hall interior remains essentially unchanged for 130 years. The garden has traces of formality combined with orchard and beck. The woods and lake provide peaceful privacy. The bedroom is in a wing and has a private bathroom (no shower). Free basic breakfast in the dining room with eggs from our own hens etc. Access through the front door and galleried hall. The grounds, which include extensive gardens, summerhouses, woods and a lake are there to explore. Rupert and Georgina will be available for help and advice, without intruding. This is not for everyone but we hope that for some it is a magical place to stay.
The incredible medieval Raby Castle and Auckland Castle, Barnard Castle and The Bowes museum are all on our doorstep. Magnificent walking, climbing and bouldering. The Howgill Hills and Lake District are easily reached. So much to see and explore. The rivers Tees and Greta (Cotman, Turner, Rokeby Park) provide lovely walks and wild swimming. The moors of Teesdale can be truly wild or more gentle in the hidden valleys awash with bluebells in spring. The Bridgewater Arms does Restaurant food, The Raby Arms has a Michelin star and Tan Hill pub is the highest in England.
  • Such a pleasant and interesting stay at Westholme Hall .... Georgina and Rupert were most welcoming and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit .... it felt like a step back in time .... and we enjoyed a lovely walk in the morning along by the beck to the lake and back along the lane .... very pleasant indeed.

    Jane2019-10-15T00:00:00Z
  • A wonderful experience stepping back in time to experience the Jacobean Hall with its beautiful antiques and eclectic mix of curios, a magical place. Both Georgina & Rupert were excellent hosts and made us feel very welcome. Amazing grounds to the house with walks directly from the front door.

  • We had an amazing time, the cottage was spotless and the welcome pack of cakes, milk, croissants was amazing. The lift to the pub down the road was much appreciated and the hot tub was piping hot and definitely well used. We will definitely be booking again.

Snow Hall sits in a beautiful 5 acre garden in a fantastic location, close to the River Tees. Large lounge, formal dining area leading to a fantastic south facing garden room. Kitchen is fully kitted out. All 3 bedrooms are large and light, and have ample storage. The master bedroom has an en-suite with bath. The second bathroom also has a bath and shower. 7.5 miles from Darlington mainline east coast railway station. 12 miles from Durham Tees Valley International Airport.
Enormous lounge, formal dining and large conservatory with associated 5 acre gardens make this property truly unique.
Rural location with extensive walking opportunities. Local pubs with good dining and hospitality. 4 miles from the North East’s only 2* Michelin restaurant, The Raby Hunt Inn and Restaurant.
  • What a glorious space. Lovely old house with masses of room. Despite its size it was cosy too. The lift made it possible for us to give my elderly Mum a family Christmas which she thoroughly enjoyed. The grounds too were lovely and peaceful. Excellent communication with Suzanne. I would highly recommend

    Claire2019-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • A very spacious history loving venue - grand rooms and ample kitchen with an huge dinning table to seat 10 with extra room for more. Although a little chilly in the halls the rooms warmed up after having the heating on. Lacking a bit on the kitchen as couldn’t find a cafetière or potato peeler. Massive garden for a lovely walk and most helpful and welcoming hosts! As well as a few extra wildlife visitors to Enjoy. We had lovely stay and would not hesitate to come back!!!!

    Vicki2019-12-23T00:00:00Z
  • The grandeur of the house makes an impact. Theres more than ample space and it takes some exploring! Would be perfect for a game of hide and seek!! However, the extra large rooms (the massive living room in particular) are hard to heat and can be a little on the cold side; so if it's anywhere near winter, you may want to bring your favourite blanket. With the age of the property, you have to expect the odd cracked ceiling and tired decor but this does not detract from the atmosphere of the place. Whether you're trying to relax or celebrate with friends, the home is well suited to please. Just be aware that the tv only receives a few random channels so you'd be best bringing a few DVDs to watch. Still, with a selection of games and the truly extensive gardens begging to be explored, there may be little time for telly. Would I return? Yes. Especially if i could have the master bedroom again 😊

    Caroline2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • Snow Hall is an amazing property and well worth a visit. The house is stunning and the host, Suzanne was wonderful. Will definitely stay again!

    Nicola2019-09-09T00:00:00Z
  • This place is great and everything about it was as described and we had a great time. The only thing I want to warn people about is the WiFi situation. It only works in certain rooms and either doesn’t work well or not at all in other places. While we didn’t mind it as much, others might.

    Jatin2019-08-22T00:00:00Z
  • Great base for our classic car trip to Yorkshire and perfect spaces for a social weekend from arrival drinks in the conservatory overlooking the garden, dinner at the grand table & breakfast in the kitchen area.

  • A clean and well thought out lodge in an extremely peaceful setting surrounded by beautiful countryside. Large outdoor space shared with 2 other lodges.

    Alice2019-08-29T00:00:00Z
  • A break away from reality. Gorgeous lodge and beautiful view of the river below. Also home to some adorable wide Life. Particularly the rabbits.

    Angie2019-07-29T00:00:00Z
  • For us the lodge was perfect, there being just the 2 of us and our 2 dogs. Lots of space, everything worked (we even got 3G internet most of the time), the showers are exceptional and the beds and bedding were a delight to sleep in (the first 2 nights we must have slept at least 9 hours). The only noise we could hear was the river below and a couple of owls hooting from time to time; lovely. Try popping in to visit Gainford just to see how a perfect Durham Village can look and if you're looking for good food and drink, The Fox (and Something) in Piercebridge was our favourite and only 4 or 5 easy miles away.

  • 1 word! AMAZING !!! I cannot describe how tranquil this place is. I think that we were so relaxed, we felt so tired, meaning our bodies and minds were having a break! and that's exactly what we aimed for. It was just brilliant. What makes this place so special? Beautiful Lodge - so cosy and romantic All necessities available Limited communication with the outside world (LOVE LOVE LOVE) Wildlife - sheep, birds, squirrels, fish, horses, the list goes on The River Tees Shops within close range Lots of activities should you wish to be adventurous, ie, walking, fishing, exploring

    Samantha2019-06-24T00:00:00Z
  • Great lodge. Amazing location. Had a lovely time just wish I’d brought my fishing gear!

    Paul2019-04-09T00:00:00Z
  • My 3 friends and I chose this place to stay as we wanted to treat ourselves to somewhere special for New Year's Eve. We loved it. A nice bottle of wine awaited our arrival. We spent a lot of time having brunch on the patio overlooking trees and nature and the river. The dog absolutely loved it too - lots of places for him to roam freely. Some bulbs and fake candles didn't work, so we replaced those and Hanne quickly reimbursed the money we'd spent.

    Tina2019-01-02T00:00:00Z
