Just booked in Sierra City

Ranch cabin built on the tailings of the Valentine Quartz Mine, overlooking the beautiful Mohawk Valley. Five miles south of Graeagle close to miles of lakes 1st class hiking, golf, and mt. bike trails, 2 queen beds in loft & 1 sofa-bed queen.
The cabin is a modified A frame built in 1960 for a small family, about 900 sq. ft. - the only privacy is the bathroom with closet, WC, and shower. It's really our family museum with two queen beds in a loft (up a fairly steep ladder) plus a sofa-bed queen on the main floor. Heat and cook stove source is propane... no dishwasher or TV. The handicap access requires some assistance.
We're in a country mountain setting, on a ranch at 4500' elevation. It's very quiet... bring your books or paints and easel... mt. bike/golf clubs/fly rod
  • Once again, we had a lovely stay. Bill and Sally's cabin in Clio. So peaceful, comfortable, and cozy. We're already starting to plan our next visit to Mohawk Valley!

  • We had a great time staying in the cabin! It had so much character and we enjoyed it very much. We had a delicious Italian dinner at a restaurant in town called Cucina's which was reccomended to us by Bill and his wife. They were very hospitable hosts and we're so friendly and gracious. Overall we had a great stay and would love to come back oneday!

  • What an absolute beautiful setting! My family and I had such a wonderful time at Bill and Sally's lovely cabin that we ended up extended our stay an additional two nights. The cabin is so charming - clean, comfortable, and well equipped for all meal preparations. My 12 year old son loved sleeping up in the cozy loft and immediately felt right at home. It was such a pleasure coming back to the cabin after being out all day on our hiking excursions within the surrounding areas. The property is ideally situated in such a peaceful and convenient setting. The view from the front balcony alone over the valley is absolutely gorgeous. Bill and Sally made us feel welcomed right away as soon as we pulled in. It was nice learning about the history of their ranch and the region as a whole. We will definitely be coming back to Mohawk Valley soon and when we do we will certainly be looking to stay at the Tantau Ranch yet again.

  • Bill's cabin is really great. Beautiful, secluded, stylish family touches, fun. The location is amazing and not far from Tahoe City, if you're into a Tahoe kind of experience, but is removed from the crowdedness of all things Tahoe. Bill and his wife are good hosts! Highly recommend.

  • An excellent place in the woods. Everything was in perfect order. The place is very charming.

    Rich2017-12-10T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing view, beautiful countryside, gracious hosts - we can't wait to return.

    Jordan2015-04-19T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to be !

    Myriam2017-07-01T00:00:00Z
  • We fell in love from the moment we arrived. The cabin is a delightful A-frame with two decks, one in front that faces out of the woods to the Mohawk Valley and to the ~7500 foot ridge on the other side and the back deck that faces up the forested hillside. Both were wonderful; the hardest thing was deciding which one to spend our time relaxing on. Additionally, the town of Graeagle is a short 5 minute drive away so if you don't want to use the grills or the kitchen, you have several restaurants close by. Finally, the Lakes Basin area is a short drive away which is filled with easily accessible backcountry lakes you can hike to. We can't wait for a chance to return.

Whether you enjoy outdoor activities or just want to relax on our deck overlooking the river, you will love this place. Hike the trails nearby, swim, kayak, and picnic at one of many beautiful mountain lakes, gaze at the Sierra Buttes, fish and enjoy the local swimming holes on the Yuba River, or just relax with a view of the river and the Tahoe National Forest. Perfect for a family vacation or group of friends. Great for telecommuting with a view -- if your boss will let you!
During winter it's a great location to avoid the crowds of the Tahoe area and is great for cross country skiing, snow shoeing, snowmobiling, or sledding with the family. Or just relax by the cozy fire. Borrow our snowshoes and poles or our sleds and have some fun. New: you may borrow our kayak to enjoy on the lakes nearby (not the river). Fits two adults and a child or dog. Please arrange for the kayak ahead of time if interested. Enjoy time on the riverside deck, fish on the river below, and sleep to the relaxing sound of the river. Enjoy the restaurants in the picturesque mining town of Sierra City or Downieville or buy groceries at the local Country Store and cook or barbecue at the cabin. Ride your bikes around town, ride the single tracks on your mountain bike, or ride your road bike up Gold Lake Road along many gorgeous lakes. Check out our low weekly pricing - may be better to spend a week - there is lots of see and do in the area. Telecommute from the cabin for a few days while the rest of your family enjoys a longer vacation. There are two bedrooms and two full bathrooms. One king bed, one queen bed, and a queen size air mattress that can go in either room or the living room. One bathroom has a shower, the other has both a bathtub and a shower. The second bedroom has a private entrance to the hall bathroom. Living space is about 1200 square feet. The TV is set up with a ROKU box and both Netflix and Amazon Prime Video subscriptions so you can enjoy great movies, TV shows, news, weather, and music. Although there is no cable TV, most broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, ESPN, etc.) have apps on the ROKU so you can watch those networks live if you have a cable subscription at home. Plug your iPod or other music player to the stereo system or the available portable iPod player. DVD, VHS, CD, and Cassette players are also available. You are welcome to use the gas barbecue on the back deck facing the river and the washer and dryer in the hall bath. Connect your phones and laptops to our WiFi network for fast internet connectivity. Please LIKE us on fcbook where you will find more pictures and videos. Search RiverFrontMountainCabin on fcbook. The cabin is in a quiet, riverside neighborhood at the end of the paved road. The next door neighbors are rarely home as they don't live in town. There are no neighbors across the river (just the National Forest). Neighbors enjoy taking a walk to the to the campground a mile away, along the river. The picturesque mining town is only a mile away with places to eat or shop. There is plenty of parking on our driveway. To get around, most people walk, drive, or ride their bikes. Kayaking is the favorite mode of transportation in the lakes : )

  • Staying at this cabin was the perfect way to spend my 40th! Francisco is an amazing, attentive host. We couldn't get the fireplace to work correctly the first night and he immediately called and guided me through it. The cabin is in a peaceful neighborhood, walking distance from beautiful hikes on the PCT and other trails. We spent one day getting pampered at the hot springs and the rest of the time cooking in the well-equipped kitchen and laughing around the cozy fire. My dog loved the location! A great getaway!

    Andrea2016-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • The listing was described accurately, and Francisco had excellent communication throughout the process. My plans changed at the last minute, and he was able to accommodate without issue. Beautiful river and mountain views. Looking forward to a return in the summer!

  • Francisco is a great host. He was very easy to deal with and responded to all questions very quickly. This was my first time using AirBnB, Francisco has set a pretty high standard for future hosts. His cabin in Sierra City is a wonderful place. In addition to being right next to a beautiful section of the Yuba River, it is in close proximity to so many great places for hiking, swimming, biking, fishing etc. Inside and out the cabin is very clean and well maintained. Plenty of comfortable places to sit. The wifi is pretty fast too. We are all looking forward to our next visit to Francisco's Cabin.

  • Great cabin has everything you need for your stay. The river & trails are right next to the house are awesome for nature hikes!! Lovely place! Would definitely stay again!

  • Francisco was great. He was very attentive and communicated with me very clearly before I arrived, making sure that I had all the details, resources, and information needed to have a great vacation in Sierra City. His small house comfortably sleeps 5-6 (two bedrooms, an air mattress, an(URL HIDDEN)couches in the living room) and their enormous back deck overlooks the beautiful Yuba River. It’s just up the street from “downtown” Sierra City, a very cute quaint town about 20 minutes from Downieville. Francisco made available his kayak, his gas grill, his fishing poles, and gave excellent recommendations for things to do in the area. This was my first time using AirBnB, and I am very thankful to have a great introduction.

  • A GEM. We have rented vacation apartments/homes in the US and abroad for years, and find it a very interesting way to see the world. In our experience, it is rare to find a place that is so well-prepared and appointed for guests, yet retains the homey and intimate feeling of a beloved family treasure. We didn't have the opportunity to meet Francisco, but communication was easy and a pleasure (he is extremely quick to respond), and the house manual and general instructions are among the most comprehensive and well-conceived we've found anywhere. The cabin is charming, extremely clean, in a fabulous location, with a very large and beautiful deck, right above the river. There were just the two of us, so we used only the master bedroom, and the bed/pillows were extremely comfortable (not always the case with private rentals). We didn't do much in the way of cooking, but the kitchen is very well-appointed, including good knives (again, not always the case with private rentals). We brought our road bikes and did Francisco's recommended ride to Bassetts, which is fantastic. We hiked in the Lakes Basin area, which is just gorgeous - not to be missed. We've been to Tahoe many times, but prefer this quieter area of the mountains - so much to do here, and more relaxed and low key. Thank you, Francisco and Linda, for sharing your wonderful place with us, it was a wonderful get-away, and we'd love to return!

  • Staying at this cabin was a fantastic treat. It is well set up for it's purpose, and Francisco was extremely helpful. There are fishing poles and tackle, beach chairs etc. The house is, as described directly on the river, and we spent a bit of time in the backyard reading and enjoying the scenery. Saw an osprey fishing. There is a great grocery store in town, however the hours a bit unpredictable. There is not a lot else in this isolated area, so if you want any specialty items, best bring them with you. The Lakes basin, and gold lakes are a 15 min drive. Pretty fantastic to drive to alpine lakes! Hiking and hanging out at lakes was where we spent our time.

    Paul2013-09-20T00:00:00Z
  • Francisco was an amazing host. He is very responsive and considerate. He kept us informed of the weather and answered all questions promptly. We were hoping to have snow at the cabin, but it had melted by the time we arrived. This didn't matter, though, there is so much to do- going by the river right outside, going for nice walks after meals in the neighborhood, and we went to an incredible sno-park just 15 min drive down the highway. Francisco is extremely organized with all the information you need to know about the house, area, and things to do. The cabin is so clean and equipped with everything you need and very relaxing and comfortable. This is a great spacious cabin for a fun family getaway! Will will definitely be back!

Amazing ambiance! This charming house is just a couple blocks from downtown in the small Gold Rush village of Sierra City. The house is cozy and private. But its greatest attraction is the peaceful sound of a brook flowing past the deck.
It's all about location! This charming house is just a couple blocks from downtown in the small Gold Rush village of Sierra City. The house is cozy and private. But its greatest attraction is the peaceful sound of a small brook flowing past the deck. Fits 2-8 comfortably. This house has three bedrooms, each with queen bed. One large bedroom also has a trundle bed that pulls out into two twin beds. This two-story house has one full bath and one half bath, one on each level.
This is a charming small town atmosphere, with stunning mountain vistas, great hiking to the river or Sierra Buttes mountain, amazing mountain biking or road riding, summertime fishing, access to cross-country skiing and snowmobile, swimming in mostly chilly waters, visiting the great but limited number of town establishments. There is a bar in town, a small grocery store run by great people, a couple restaurants when they are open and a couple other places like a mining shop and art gallery.
  • lovely home in Sierra City, close to trails and town. great for a family vacation.

  • This is great house to stay and to explore trails around North Yuba river. House has a lot of room for big family or party inside and outside. Sound of creek and waterfall is amazing. Makes you feel not at the house, but in the forest.

  • We had a wonderful time in Sierra City. The view was beautiful from upstairs and the noises of the creek close by made us sleep like babies! Was such a nice way to wake up every morning! We all fell in love with this property. Tobias is a great host and offered lots of hikes near by for us to check out. Both host and house is a real gem.

  • Tobias' Relaxing Creekside Home was the perfect starting point for our hiking and biking adventures. The house is a bit quirky, but very comfortable and spacious. Everything was super clean and very easy to use. There was plenty of kitchen equipment to cook meals for six adults.

  • My host made me feel really welcome, just like being home. He was very helpful with descriptive house rues, expectations, recommendations, etc. The house was great, everything working, clean, utensils were really useful. The neighborhood was quiet and the water flow from the mountain was music to my ears, amazing place for relaxing and was very close to places you can go skiing on your own on winter and close to lakes and river for summer.

Drift House is two one bedroom levels that can be rented separately to sleep 4 or together to sleep up to 8. Each level has a private entrance, full kitchen, bath, bedroom, living room and private porch overlooking the Downie River.
Drift House is situated at the top of a lot overlooking the beautiful Downie River and public access for swimming and fishing is a short 5 minute walk away. You've got an 8 minute walk to the center of downtown and about a 2 minute ride to the shuttle pick up from the front door. The house is newly remodeled to accommodate vacationers who love the outdoors.
Downieville is an incredible place to spend some down time. The town is built around the Downie and Yuba Rivers and the hiking, fishing and mountain biking are world class. Drift House is in downtown and located on a third of an acre with a gorgeous view of river and forest so you get the best of both worlds.
  • Great location. House exactly as advertised. Nice to go to Downieville and have a location just outside of the main part of town, yet easily accessible to town by a short walk. Charming and I recommend to anyone looking for a quiet Downieville based location.

    Ian2015-08-02T00:00:00Z
  • Downieville was an awesome experience! My wife and I come from Texas so this was complete opposite of what we're used to, a great adventure. The drift house was cozy with a terrific view, the Yuba river is awesome as well! We were welcomed with a great bottle of wine and Chelsea was very accommodating. If you're in Northern California and want to have a quiet (population of 282), yet historic place to stay, with a view this is the place for you. I highly recommend it.

    Josh2016-01-23T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great spot to get away from the world and immerse yourself in the wonder of one of the great parts of the West Coast. Chelsea's place is comfortable, well decorated and she's thought of just about everything in terms of making your stay as easy as possible. The bed on the deck is amazing.

    Noah2016-07-21T00:00:00Z
  • The house is warm and welcoming, the bottle of wine such a thoughtful touch! It is close enough to town to walk and far enough away to feel the peace of the valley. Beautiful views, and the option to sleep outside if you want. Chelsea has a such a good estetic, the house reflects her artistic flair. Love staying there!

    Mark2016-09-05T00:00:00Z
  • I'd second most of the other remarks about this lodging. It's not the Ritz, but has a fun vibe, and is extremely comfortable, cozy, well furnished, thoughtfully decorated and stocked to the rafters with most everything you could need. And this place is really, really clean, as in comfy barefoot clean. The daybed on the porch, the bottle of wine, the games and classic books on the shelves and the roomy kitchen all make for a great stay. Lastly, I'm not just a visitor, and can tell you that Chelsea's recommendations and suggestions are all spot on.

    Lee2016-07-06T00:00:00Z
  • Great location, great house. We loved our stay in this little paradise! The house is very well stocked with everything you would need . I was glad to see even toddler friendly utensils ! The location is beautiful though the town itself doesn't have a lot to do specially if you are with a toddler but the views and the house makes up for it. Chelsea made our stay very welcoming and we would definitely love to come back again !

    Shilpa2015-12-28T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at the lower drift house for 4 nights. It's a really nice and calm place (like the whole town ;-)) with a beautiful view from the balcony. The place is nice and equipped in top quality in a modern style, like you can see in the images. Chelsea (the owner) was always very friendly and answered really fast all our questions. The place was really well prepared with all instructions provided, which can make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. Because our late arrive, Chelsea putted some beer and pizza in the fridge, which was really nice :-). We enjoyed the stay at here and can absolutely recommend it to you too! You will enjoy it ;-)!

    Sascha2015-08-07T00:00:00Z
  • My boyfriend and I decided to get away for Christmas and came across this place which turned out to be the best decision ever. We had an amazing stay at the Drifthouse! Everything was perfect and clean and the views from the day bed were stunning! I could spend hours out there looking at the gorgeous Bob Ross like painted scenery. We had everything we needed and although the town was quiet for the holidays we enjoyed the scenery while taking daily walks with our pups and saying hi to the locals. The town is rich with history and we enjoyed the walking tour. We will definitely be coming back because we got engaged during our stay there! Definitely a trip to remember for a lifetime.

  • This property is beautifully located in a valley with view of the mountains and Downie river. The property is well kept and the owner gives an exhaustive list of instructions on how to reach the place and what to do while vacating. Dillon was very friendly and gave us some idea of where we can find a day use recreation area to BBQ. The best part about this property was the view. We were 6 of us and we loved our stay here. Dillon has kept a lot of board games to play if you are here to just relax and spend quality time with friends and family. If time permits, I will definitely stay here again.

    Abhinav2017-05-29T00:00:00Z
  • My family had a lovely time here. The outlook is quite amazing as it includes views of the mountains, town and river. The furniture and beds are quite comfy. The kitchen is perfectly stocked for cooking - pots, pans, etc. The house is located within walking distance to town; however, the road is quite steep. We stayed with my toddler and infant so we drove to town or pushed the stroller as my toddler couldn't make the climb. The owner, Dillon, is VERY responsive to any questions you may have. Finally, this house is made up of two units, so be aware that noise travels and you can occasionally hear the other tenants. While we were staying here, the other tenants were very respectful so we had to problems with noise. In sum, this rental is a gem and the owner is professional, friendly and quick to answer questions.

  • Uphill's Upper Unit was very comfortable and well amended with things you might need. The view was really breath taking, the crickets and river were a nice touch for a good nights sleep. Worked out really well for our relaxing anniversary time. Thank you!

  • We had a great stay at Dillon's!! The house is above town and offers one of the best views we have ever had! The deck is wraparound and and a perfect place to hang out on warm nights, great for breakfast too:) Plenty of room to spread out, wifi and Netflix were a bonus. Check it out!!!

  • This home is extremely cozy and cute! The drive up was a little intense but the home is very well taken care of and worth the drive. The house is really big and can fit a big group. The only issue we ran into was the bottom floor was really cold and there was no central heating. The space heaters that were provided were too small to warm up the large room downstairs. But Dillon was really kind and responsive! He offered to reimburse us if we wanted to purchase some more heaters to stay warm. He is super easy to contact and actually wants you to enjoy your stay. The bottom floor was still being remodeled but we hope to come back when it's finished! Our group of 8 had an amazing weekend.

  • The view from the back of the house is beautiful. We recommend arriving during daylight as it's a little hard to find & the roads are steep & narrow. The place & furnishings are comfortable.

    Rachel2016-09-05T00:00:00Z
  • Dillon's place is comfy with a great view. There were only 4 of us so it was extremely spacious but would be perfectly fine with far more.

    Adrian2017-09-17T00:00:00Z
  • Best of downieville right here. Amazing view of town, comfortable accommodations (electric grill a definite plus!) and very good value. Would definitely stay again.

    elliott2017-07-30T00:00:00Z
  • This home sits overlooking a stunning view the entire valley with Downieville nestled in the bottom. I stayed in the lower portion of this home which served our needs perfectly. Thanks for having a bike wash and bike repair stands, super helpful!!

    Troy2017-08-08T00:00:00Z
  • Very nice it would be a good value for for big groups especially The room was quite clean. And probably pretty well disinfect it based on the slight chlorine aroma. The best part was the wonderful view from the porch remember though even though there's a kitchen it's really a microwave, toaster, two electric burners a coffee maker There is an electric barbecue grill. The beddings were quite clean with plenty of sleeping places - there is a king size bed for bunk beds as well as a double bed. Those trying to get to this place please knowthat even though it is located close to downtown Downieville, it is located up a steep hill climb. It is not a big deal - about a 10 minute walk but be careful if you are driving a monster truck

    Tommy2017-09-10T00:00:00Z
  • A little hard to find, but the views of Downieville were great! Walkable to town (if you don't mind the large hill), and has basic amenities. There's one king sized bed in it's own room, but the rest are in the living room and kind of in the open so be sure no one snores! Many, many board games and puzzles supplied, and lots of dishes/towels/sheets. You can definitely hear the guests in the above rental, but they were pretty respectful. Be sure to check the sheets before hopping into bed, we did find a few bugs. Not a bad place if you're there for the biking and just need a place to crash, it's a good basic rental.

Sorry, no AirBnB guest availability during the snowy months (approx Dec 15-April 5). This is because the private access road is not cleared to drive after snowfall. Two rivers come together. Trails and open space galore. Big Springs is our nearest neighbor. On the other side of Salmon Crk Rd there is a picturesque 1920's log cabin compound set in a beautiful meadow on nearby Forest Service Land. You can hear road noise if you listen for it. Within five miles there are so many things to do and see it takes a lifetime to visit all of them.
  • Sierra Solitude is the perfect spot for a quiet restful time. It is convenient to lots of hiking and exploring and the house itself is well equipped and comfortable. Our group of 6 women has been going to the mountains together for 27 years and this spot ranks right up there with the best. Mike is responsive and helpful and made our stay just lovely.

    Donna2017-09-17T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great stay at Sierra Solitude for Thanksgiving. It is a great place to relax, surrounded by nature. The cabin itself is large and comfortable, great for hanging out, playing board games etc.

    Colbjoern2015-11-30T00:00:00Z
  • We had booked this originally for a party of 6 but ended up with only 4 of us so it felt like a lot of space! It is a large and welcoming house on a totally secluded lot; we could not see or hear anybody or anything else from the property. Really a beautiful spot. Aside from the ideal setting, our favorite features were the excellent barbecue setup, the large and well appointed deck, and the breakfast/dining/gaming "nook" in the living room. Just perfect for a few friends spending a relaxing weekend in the Sierras. Mike had a ton of really great recommendations, and the cabin was just a short drive from the Sierra Buttes, which proved a formidable but very rewarding hike.

    Alex2014-06-23T00:00:00Z
  • My friends and I greatly enjoyed our stay at Sierra Solitude. The name is accurate - a great feeling of seclusion in beautiful woods. The house is spacious, comfortable and tasteful. Mike was extremely responsive and helpful.

  • Thank you for a wonderful place for our business retreat. The home was perfect and a beautiful setting!

    niki2016-10-29T00:00:00Z
  • An amazing tranquility. One cannot expect for anything more. Hidden in the woods away from everything best positioned as the home away from home. Our party was 2 families with kids (party of 8 in total) space was great the house had everything we needed for cook ins and BBQ. The local is amazing in every season (we stayed in may) close proximity to some amazing trails up in the Sierra. Highly recommended. Hope to return again.

    Guy2013-05-28T00:00:00Z
  • My family and I had an amazing stay. The house was clean, and had every amenity needed and then some. The next time we stay in the Sierra city we hope to return.

    Jason , Christine and Camille2015-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed for a long Thanksgiving weekend. Mike was extremely helpful before the visit, checking in to provide thorough information and to answer any and all questions. The house is in a beautiful setting. It's nicely appointed and very comfortable with an open flow between the living room, kitchen, and dining area. The kitchen is well-equipped, can accommodate several cooks, and staples are provided. Guests' comfort has been well thought out, and the feeling is one of generosity. We took one of the hikes that begins from the house--to Volcano Lake--and can highly recommend it. Our only regrets: that it was too cold and rainy to use the giant barbecue grill, and that we couldn't stay a bit longer. Would definitely come back to this lovely spot and fabulous cabin.

  • Book this if it's available - excellent communication before and during the stay. This was one of my favorite airbnb's I've ever stayed at in more than 10 countries. Great decoration, very comfy, quiet, Mike & Zoe were friendly and helpful without being intrusive. The bathroom is like a palace. Rustic charm in a warm & comfortable setting... and Zoe's breakfasts are really really good :-D

    Marc2017-11-27T00:00:00Z
  • Zoe was a wonderful host and thought of every last detail to make or stay the best it could be! Beautiful location with lots of adventureing to be done. 10/10 would stay again. (:

    Sarah2017-11-09T00:00:00Z
  • I had the pleasure of staying at Zoe's place the weekend before Christmas. She was so accommodating and flexible with our plans and our late arrival. She is an amazing host and wonderful cook. Breakfast delivered every morning right on time and piping hot and delicious. She offered suggestions and checked in every morning to see if there was any advice or anything we needed. The room is perfect. Our own private entrance allowed us to come and go without disturbing Zoe and her partner. We liked the freedom. The sleep number bed that was wonderful. The new kitchen area saved us money and was romantic to cook together and allowed us to purchase our food from the little local grocery store. But besides Zoe's hospitality our favorite amenity was the Jacuzzi tub. It was quite big and extremely relaxing. Graeagle was a beautiful little town and the surrounding areas allowed for lots of outdoor activities and adventures although we spent the majority of our time exploring the little town and hanging in the cozy room. I want every person that is considering Zoe's place to know how amazing it and she is but I also want to keep her my little secret so I can visit again whenever I please. But honestly if you are looking for a quiet romantic snowy or outdoorsie place to get away, her place is perfect.

  • Perfect spot for a mountain biker! Just a short walk from Main street. Space was clean and welcoming with an awesome front deck.

    christelle2015-12-29T00:00:00Z
  • I've stayed in many cabins / rentals both in the Downieville area and others as well. The Upper Drift house was like a dream come true. The dining area has a window looking out over the valley that literally looks like a picture of the town hanging on the wall. We enjoyed looking out over the valley at all hours of the day and night. The Upper Drift house itself was filled with interesting books, photographs, and felt extremely warm and welcoming. Chelsea provided a bottle of wine and a suggestion to enjoy the wine on the balcony. This was an amazing way to kick off my vacation at Upper Drift house. To summarize my experience - it was everything I had wanted, and truly felt like my own home. It was very difficult to leave at the end trip.

    Aaron2016-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay in Chelsea's Upper Drift! We were so content out there on the porch with that peaceful view, that when it came time to walk down to town for dinner on our first eve we just couldn't make ourselves leave. Instead we made do with a few snacks we had and the lovely cab that chelsea thoughtfully left for us on the kitchen counter. Of course that meant we had nothing stashed when we found that every restaurant in town was closed on Sunday evening, so if you're there during the week, plan for that... The place is really cute and comfortable and has everything you might might need, including for food prep (if you have anything to prep!). The pellet stove is fantastic and did a great job warming the place. Chelsea has thought of all the details to make for a really comfortable and nice stay in her home.

    Susana2015-10-26T00:00:00Z
  • I loved this house! We spent most of our time there sitting on the shaded deck looking across the valley. Downieville is a charming little town full of character and a great base for hikes - Lakes Basin has endless Sierra opportunities.

  • Shawn made us feel welcome. Great neighborhood and town. We were welcomed by the small community. We were given Wi-Fi codes to make calls and check our emails. By the way, Verizon is the only wireless provider that works in the town. The house needs alot of work, (pictures look better) but we only needed a place to sleep and head to the snow.

    Olton2016-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • Shawn's Gold Rush abode is charming. As is Downieville itself. The antique home is obviously well loved and lived but clean and comfortable. There is an old world feeling about the home and the town and you are very removed which is much if its charm. I do wish, however, there was internet access since most of our phones were not within cell range. We had a wonderful and white Christmas. My family and our dogs will return!

    Rod2015-12-28T00:00:00Z
  • This place is full of charm and instantly feels like home. Shawn has furnished and decorated in a style that compliments it's legacy since 1852. The kitchen is well stocked with appliances, including a brand new grill on the deck. We loved the recipes written inside the wooden cupboards. Location, location! Swimming holes and great restaurants are within walking distance. The kids enjoyed streaming Netflix and Hulu, while we relaxed on the deck watching the river run by. The home is very comfortable, but be prepared to share 1 bathroom. It was never an issue for us during our 3-night stay (group of 10), I believe due to the sink/mirror being separated from the toilet/shower, and we swam in the river every day so no one was showering much. Shawn was a lovely host, responded quickly to questions, and checked in frequently.

Right on Main Street , this spacious, remodeled loft occupies the top two stories of the building and has spectacular river side and mountain views. The bottom floor is home to Yuba Expeditions, host to the Downieville Classic and where mountain bikers catch the shuttle for the Downieville Downhill.
Originally built in 1867, the "Weaver" building, as it is known in the county, was completely remodeled in 2005. The third story, originally storage for the store, was remodeled into rental loft accommodations complete with hand made furniture and trim salvaged from Kezar stadium bleachers in San Francisco. The loft sleeps up to eight guests in three queen size beds and three trundle beds in a loft style space -- not great for romantic couples but GREAT for large groups of friends or bike buddies.
  • A great place to spend a quiet weekend out of the city. Well stocked kitchen, fun open sleeping options and located right in the quaint town across from a small beach and swimming spot. We had a great girls weekend here and found the accommodations and communication to be top notch. Will definitely come back for another summer getaway.

  • Our mountain biking group had a fabulous weekend doing some epic rides and hosting a barbeque for our group. The new webber grill was perfect for outdoor barbequing. Being located above Yuba expeditions was convenient and helpful. The accommodations were comfortable and inviting. This is our 6th time renting from Bibi and Jeff and we can't wait to do it again next year. Mountain Bike and Martini Club, Los Gatos, CA

    Bob2015-10-04T00:00:00Z
  • Our group of 7 stayed here over 4th of July weekend. Overall, the experience was completely awesome and in line with our expectations. Even though there were no mountain bikers in our group, we still took advantage of the Loft's proximity to several swimming holes, hiking, and running trails. The accommodation itself is the perfect set-up if you're a large group of friends looking to have shared meals and shared fun. Would totally recommend to any folks that love the outdoors and are looking for an adventure in an area slightly less crowded than the likes of Tahoe. If you go make sure to say what's up to Will from 49 Wines, he will recommend some excellent reds and provide you with complimentary life advice! Win win.

  • The house was everything we expected and more. Very spacious and accommodating for a group. The pull out beds were great and the spacious living area made everyone feel comfortable. Awesome location in town! We were there when the Clampers invaded the town, so some extra entertainment was had just outside our windows. (Mens drinking club) The bike shuttle company was just outside our door, so making the shuttle was easy. Fabulous! We are looking forward to coming back! Thanks Bibi and Jeff!

    41 reviews
Newly renovated Victorian cottage, set in the heart of Downieville. Nestled between 2 rivers, the cottage offers a relaxing retreat. Swim, bike, fish, walk or simply watch the world go by in this Sierra goldmine town, surrounded by nature.
Our family loves our cottage. In the winter there's nothing like snuggling up and sitting around the fire playing board games. In the summer it's all about the outdoors. Sit on the porch and watch the world go by, explore the Sierra's all around you, or be adventurous and try out the famous downhill mountain bike rides.
There's lots to do here! And it's a super cute town that time has forgot. -Pop into the Downieville museum to see what life was like in the gold rush era 150 years ago. You many even be able to catch someone who actually mined in the 70's. -See if you can find the secret waterfall and swim under the falls -Visit the theatre for a movie night or a play put on by the local town folk -Do a swim hole crawl on the Yuba river. There's at least 10 swim holes within a 0.5 mile radius. -Slurp a delicious ice cream at the creamery in the center of town -Try a restaurant or 2. Mexican, Pizza or some good old home-cooked food. -Start your mountain bike ride with a shuttle from 1 of the 2 mountain bike shops. -Got some aches and pains from that riding? Try a massage in town. -Check out the Kentucky Mine. It still runs, but bring ear buds! -Take that SUV/UTV or ATV into the mountains. Use the fire trails to drive to the top of the Sierra's and see the iconic Sierra fire lookouts. -Head up to the stunning Butte's for incredible views, hikes and lakes -Grab a tube and float in the river -In the winter, head past Sierra City for some fun in the snow. Snow shoe or skiddooing.

  • The old time charm of the home and simple neat decorating really made for a pleasant atmosphere. The short walk across the bridge to the Bike shop and transportation buses to all sorts of challenging rides was a definite plus. The kitchen being stocked with all the, plates, utensils, and cook ware needed, made the stay so easy. Thanks!

  • The house is so charming. It is just a block from the historic main street of Downieville, and you can hear the sounds of the river across the street. It's a great destination for mountain bikers, students of California history, and anybody looking for a get-away to a serene and picturesque small town in the Sierras. Everything in the house was clean, well-organized and totally as described.

Clear Air Mountain House. FOR 1st TIME GUESTS, OWNERS WILL BE ONSITE 2 huge suites available @ our luxurious, RADICALLY FRAGRANCE-FREE, LGBT-friendly eco-retreat in the Sierra Lakes Basin; swim-spa, chef's kitchen, internet, lots of comfy beds! This one is the larger one (over 480 square feet, sleeps 9-10). The 415-square-foot suite is listed separately (Fragrance-free Sierra Suite sleeps 4-6).
The Clear Air Mountain House, a radically fragrance-free retreat is a 3000 square-foot house, built with a very open floor plan (but each sleeping suite has a door); there are 2 large living+sleeping spaces, or great-rooms, a caretaker's suite (where we stay for one-time or first-time rentals), and a large sunroom (with heated swim-spa, which includes an endless current and massage jets). There's also a kitchen, dining area, multiple entry rooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 porches, a garage, a yard and a garden (which features some lovely landscaped gathering / relaxation areas). The larger great-rooms are called the River Suite and the Rainbow Suite. The third floor master bedroom is called the Cloud Suite (1st time guests can only rent the house when we're on-site in the Cloud Suite). Outside the bedroom of the Cloud Suite (at the top of the spiral stairs) is a reading nook (with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and a knotty-pine door separating the nook from the Cloud Room). We started Clear Air Mountain House because most vacation lodging cannot accommodate our chemical sensitivities. There are thousands of vacation lodgings that allow fragrances, but very few places that are safer for those that are chemically sensitive. Rates: Nightly: The non-holiday nightly rate is 195 (plus 10% lodging tax) for one suite, 295 for two, plus $25 for each additional person after 4 (for one suite) or 6 (for two), up to a maximum of 16. A lower rate may be available for weekly rentals, longer winter/spring stays, midweek stays, nonprofit/educational retreats, and considerate repeat visitors (ask us for details). Cleaning fee is $150 flat rate, or $35-45 per person (whichever is less) or you can do your own move-out cleaning.
From the Sierra City web site: Sierra City is an ideal base for lovers of the outdoors. It is only minutes away from the Sierra Buttes and the Lakes Basin. Here you'll find wonderful year-around recreation: fishing, hiking, boating, rafting, mountain biking, skiing, kayaking, snowmobiling, bird watching, and there's lots of wildlife to see! More than 45 picturesque lakes are in the Lakes Basin within a half-hour drive from Sierra City. The lakes -- large rock bowls -- were created by glaciers; they fill with melting snow and are kept fresh by natural springs. The lakes host a range of fine trout: Eastern Brook, Mountain Brook, German and Rainbow. Hikers have immediate access to the magnificent Pacific Crest Trail as well as many other challenging trails and climbs. All trails are well-marked and maintained by the U.S. Forest Service. Local businesses have maps and supplies. The North Yuba River offers wily challenges to the experienced fly fishing enthusiast. And its 18 miles of Class 5 (experts only) whitewater beckon the experienced kayaker in the spring. Abundant winter snowfall turns nearby mountain roads into adventurous snowmobile trails (we, being allergic to snowmobile exhaust, choose the snowmobile-free ski and snowshoe trails). And cross-country skiers can break tracks through the high-country meadows.
  • My stay at Shar's place was awesome! The house is beautifully crafted and decorated. Everything in the house is amazing (see pictures), There were a couple other women staying at the house when I was there who were delightful for conversation and companionship. I borrowed some comfy clothing as mine had some scented laundry residue. I had a huge room for sleeping and hanging out. One night I slept on the hammock and loved looking up at the pines and then the stars. Irina took me exploring the surrounding area to see the Buttes and several nearby Lakes and a river for the best hiking and swimming. There is also great hiking possible right from the house that leads to a fire tower in the Buttes. Lastly, I needed to use the wifi for work and found it fast and reliable. Highly recommended!!!
