Shetland Islands Vacation Rentals

Just booked in Shetland Islands

300 year old cottage, connected to our home, but completely self contained with own front door. 2 minutes from sea. Wonderful wildlife. 1 twin-beds bedroom, 1 single bedroom and shower room on first floor. Room for folding bed in sitting room.
Unst is the northernmost island in the UK with a population of about 650.
  • The host made us feel very welcome. We were warmly met with homemade cookies. Location was wonderful and the cottage where we've stayed was great. To be honest, it's very cheap for it's size and location.

    Aistė2014-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage was very comfortable and spacious. We liked Catriona and Robb, as well as their delightful and lively daughters, a lot. Our after dinner conversations were interesting and most enjoyable. The views are lovely. It was fun having chickens and Shetland ponies in the yard. It was an ideal place to stay while visiting Unst - which is amazing. Unfortunately, it was very foggy while we were there, so we didn't see as many birds as we would have liked, but loved being there nonetheless. It is quite remote, so food and wine shopping before you go is a good idea.

  • Baltasound was a wonderful place to stay and I very much enjoyed visiting the Viking archaeology of the island. I was made welcome and helped greatly by being dropped off at the start of my walks, thank you for your kindness and hospitality. The cottage provided me with a good base for exploring Unst.

    Sue2014-10-08T00:00:00Z
  • We had a fantastic stay here and would definitely recommend this place to anyone. Beautiful location and a lovely cottage with everything we needed. Catriona and Rob and their two daughters are a really lovely family and made us feel completely welcome and at home.

    sebastian2015-05-30T00:00:00Z
  • First of all, Catriona was not here during our stay but we still managed to communicate with the messaging, which was greatly appreciated. Her husband Robbie welcomed us very well into the cottage and we felt at home. The home is well equiped (good kitchen and tools, oven, fridge, etc.) and cosy. The location is also very good, being near all best natural spots of Unst and having a few facilities around (shops, fuel, café, restaurant). We can only recommend this place and we wish we would have stayed longer!

    Romain2016-09-23T00:00:00Z
  • A wonderful little cottage on a fantastically peaceful island and a lovely welcoming family next door. Apart from hurricane Gonzalo keeping me inside one day I had exactly the kind of week on Unst I was hoping for - a good blend of relaxation and adventure. If you're looking to get away from it all look no further.

    Gwyn2014-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • Second time we've stayed here. Says it all really!!

    Elizabeth2015-10-09T00:00:00Z
  • An amazing experience, definitely out there and away from it all this cottage was exactly what my friend and I were looking for when we wanted to go north. Rob was an excellent guide and took us around the island showing us some of the important parts. He is also a phenomenal photographer whose work was scattered throughout the house. Arriving to a freshly baked cake as a welcome gift was also quite nice. The house is warm, comfortable, cozy and exceptionally quiet. The local store is one mile away, and I was unaware of any take away restaurants, but the kitchen provided to cook in was excellent. The internet connection is available, but not exceptionally fast. Overall I would recommend this to anyone looking to experience some of the finest that Unst has to offer and is willing to be out there on the island on your own. If you are looking for a bustling town life, or city amenities I would not recommend it - but that is what makes this place so special. That and the amazing family you share it with.

Sea Winds, is a newly renovated c. 1760 two-storey listed townhouse located in the picturesque south end of Commercial Street, Lerwick. With beautiful open views over Bain's Beach, you can enjoy life by the sea with all the modern comforts of the house has to offer, including a wood burning stove. Close to the BBC series 'Shetland 'Jimmy Perez' home', Queens Hotel for a pint or meal, or minutes walk from restaurants and pubs in Lerwick, Sea Winds makes an excellent base to tour the isles.
While Sea Winds is quite secluded in the Lodberries, its only minutes away from all the pubs and eating places in Lerwick. The Lounge Bar, by Market Cross, is a 5 minute walk away is a great place for a drink and meet locals. During the summer months, there is live music. As for food, the Queens Hotel is literally next door, where you can have a 'a la carte' meal, or just a bar meal with a pint. My favourite cafe for the best coffee and soup in town, is the Peerie Shop Cafe which is 5 minutes away by the Esplanade. They also do wonderful breakfasts and lunches of smoked salmon on bagels although I always end up ordering their superb soup. If you have a car, the best restaurant is The Scalloway Hotel, an award winning restaurant in Scalloway which serves the best fish dishes in the isles. Hay's Dock Restaurant at the Shetland Museum & Archives is also another lovely place to eat with stunning views across the harbour. Further north in Brae, is one of the best fish & chip shops in the UK, Frankies. Although Lerwick's own The Fort is equally good! As for take-aways, there are two Indian, two Chinese and one Thai restaurant so all in all, you don't need to cook if you want a complete break from it all. If you enjoy fish, another tip is just to head to Blydoit Fish Shop and just stock up on their wonderful smoked fish and Orkney oatcakes and have a picnic with views of the sea (weather permitting)!
  • Great location, so well appointed with great attention to detail in finishing. The welcome pack of kitchen essentials and treats was appreciated. All modern appliances and extremely comfortable from top to bottom.

    Frances 2017-07-18T00:00:00Z
  • This is a beautiful old house right in the middle of the old town in Lerwick. You can hear the waves all through the house, and the little beach right outside is lovely. We had a mixed week of weather but the house was cosy and very well equipped. There was a very welcome welcome pack when we arrived late on the Friday of bread and milk and eggs, and the manual of tips and was very helpful. We'd love to go back some time.

    Orlaith2017-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • This is a fantastic, quirky townhouse over 3 floors in the most historic part of lerwick. The house has really interesting furnishings and a great view across the Bressay Sound. Very comfortable and peaceful, yet very central. And a lovely welcome basket of local produce. Would thoroughly recommend!

  • Ruth's place was fantastic. Beautifully quirky and really comfortable with everything we needed for a base for our Shetland trip. Really well equipped and so lovely and welcoming to find local produce waiting our arrival. Ruth was great at answering all our queries and accommodating our requests, alerting us to passing orcas off Noss and lots of great information in the house. Highly recommended and we'd love to be back. Thank you!

    Joyce2017-08-06T00:00:00Z
  • Great location just minutes from town and waterfront. Fabulous views of sea and across the bay. The house is beautifully furnished, with everything you could need. Ruth was very welcoming and helpful.

Traditional croft house in a great central location for exploring all of Shetlands incredible scenery
Our place is a traditional Shetland croft house that was a single story building with a thatch roof built about 300 years ago. It was extended over the last 150 years and has recently been fully refurbished retaining some original features to make it a warm and comfortable place to stay without loosing any of its charm
Scalloway a small fishing village still retains much of the character and charm of past times, with colourful fisherman's cottages looking out to some of the smaller isles and skerries. The castle which was built around 1600 is well worth a visit as is the museum where you will find a wealth of information about the Shetland bus, a wartime resistance movement taking wireless operators, armaments and combatants into Norway during WW11. Moore's slipway which was used to fix some of the boats on their return to Scalloway can still be seen today. There are two golf courses within a 5min drive and fishing is available in the Lochs that you can see from the house and many more through out Shetland.
  • We had a great stay in Pamela's extremely comfortable and well equipped house and would have no problem in recommending it to others. Impeccably clean and incredibly comfortable (enormous!) bed. Conveniently located for exploring the island. Pamela was easy to communicate with and went the extra mile in providing milk, bread, bacon and numerous other goodies. Big thumbs up all round, thank you Pamela!

    James2017-05-22T00:00:00Z
  • Pamela has clearly put a huge amount of care, thought and imagination into creating her cottage as a place to feel welcomed, valued, warm and very comfortable. The cottage has been beautifully converted and very well equipped, wanting for nothing to guarantee a very pleasing and relaxed stay. She has created a standard for others to aspire to.

  • this is an excellent place to stay, thought and care that has gone into creating an ideal base from which to explore shetland. the level of comfort,a real fire ,working wifi, and a friendly hostess who is there to greet you when you arrive and help you to settle in, made for a wonderful weeks holiday. we would highly recommend staying here.

    sally2017-07-22T00:00:00Z
  • Pamela made me feel very welcome and was on hand if required but never imposed. I would thoroughly recommend her home to anyone, because if feels like home. Comfortable, tastefully decorated, I slept so well and had a wonderful time in Shetland

    Stacey2017-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • Pamela had the fire going for us when we arrived on a wet and wild Shetland day, which was very much appreciated. Every little convenience was supplied, including a lovely welcome pack with fresh eggs. Good wifi, and the quiet location is picture perfect. We would definitely stay here again.

    Cathy2017-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • Terrific accommodation for two. A great base to explore the wonderful Shetland Isles.

    Kymme2017-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • We had a fantastic stay; the place is spotless and really well equipped and we were welcomed with a lovely warm fire in the stove. At the end of our stay, Pamela asked if there was anything that we'd missed but we honestly couldn't think of anything she could do to improve the croft house. Thanks again Pamela for a great stay!

    Heather2017-05-20T00:00:00Z
  • Really cute croft cottage creatively renovated to keep the cottage charm. Also loved the pots of flowers and flower bed at the front door a really nice touch.

*10% weekly discount - first season offer ends soon!!* Overlooking the Atlantic, Westerbrake is a get away from it all experience. A cosy croft house, tucked away in a private coastal setting. Sea views, the award winning Breckon Beach, fabulous wildlife, walking and fishing 'on the doorstep'. Free from the intrusions of internet and TV - connect with nature for a while instead! Perfectly located base for exploring or birding Fetlar, Unst and Yell and within easy reach of Shetland Mainland.
Westerbrake has been lovingly refurbished. Original, vintage and antique features and furnishing have been kept wherever possible so its unique character still shines through. Modern insulation behind traditional wood panelling makes the cottage warm and cosy - even in the winter. There is a double bed in the bedroom and a traditional boxbed in the living room. The boxbed dimensions are 1.81m x 1.32m (5'11'' x 4'4''). Not quite as wide or long as a double so it is listed as single but it is bigger than single. It is ideal for one or two older children to share. It can of course accommodate adults so long as the dimensions are ok for you. We provide binoculars, maps and a wide selection of natural and cultural history books about Shetland and the local area to help you soak up your surroundings. We also provide a selection of games, puzzles and books to help you relax. The cottage has a portable Bluetooth speaker for you to listen to your own music if you have a Bluetooth enabled device. There are also USB charge points in the living room. There is an FM radio should you wish for some contact with the outside world! The freshly refurbished wash room has a spacious walk-in shower and a laundry cupboard with washing machine. There is a clothes dryer outside. The kitchen is fully equipped for self-catering with a kettle, toaster, electric oven with hobs & grill and a fridge-freezer.
Although it's situation is secluded, Westerbrake is just a couple of minutes drive from the local Cullivoe shop where you can stock up on essentials. Yell has four other well stocked shops spread throughout the isle including three that sell fuel and one that doubles up as a café. Yell has two Rural Seaside Award-winning sandy beaches (including Breckon Beach just a few minutes walk away) and mile after mile of coastline to explore. Everything from sandy beaches to pebbly bays, dramatic cliffs and gentle rocky shores. It also has some of the best preserved peat-land in Shetland if sphagnum mosses, bog orchids and sundews are your thing. There is a local bar in the Cullivoe Community Hall that is open every Friday night. There are several places where you can shop for Shetland artwork and hand produced crafts in Yell including The Shetland Gallery, GlobalYell Textiles and Burravoe Haa craft shop. (Within seasonal opening hours). Mid Yell has a leisure centre with a pool and gym and a healthcare centre with doctors and dental surgery.
  • Words do not do the experience of staying at westerbrake justice. We had an incredible time and cant wait to return

  • I was drawn to this superb cottage for its location and I wasn't disappointed. Absolutely beautiful unbroken views of the surrounding hills and sea. Warm and cosy inside even with the December weather outside, the cottage had everything I needed for a completely relaxed stay. The hosts were super helpful and accommodating, which made my stay even more memorable.

    Lisa2016-12-24T00:00:00Z
  • Martha is such a great host! She was so helpful and gave us a lot of ideas for places to visit. The stay was amazing. The view from the cottage is breathtaken!

    Claudio2017-04-16T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great time in Cullivoe at the very cosy converted croft house! It was a lovely peaceful location and had great views over the cliffs. A 5 minute walk to a lovely beach where we managed to paddle our feet as we were so lucky with glorious sunny October weather! Martha and Malcie were great hosts, knew a lot about the wildlife in the area and gave us great tips on walking. Thank you!

    Jo2016-10-10T00:00:00Z
  • Extraordinary beautiful location and friendly host

    Gabriele2017-08-13T00:00:00Z
  • This is the perfect place to calm down from a busy modern life. The absence of mobile signal, WiFi and television creates the perfect tranquillity to relax deeply. If you can't live without being connected to the rest of the world look for another place. If you enjoy your life and nature without all the modern consumer electronics devices come to this place. On our walk along Gloup Voe we saw an otter with a cub.

    Rainer2017-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful house in a beautiful setting. The lack of connection is more than appreciated and reinforces this feeling of being away from everything. We would recommend it to everybody! Martha and Malcie are amazing hosts which completes beautifully this experience on the Shetland islands.

    Mathilde2017-06-02T00:00:00Z
  • Peaceful with gorgeous views, this was the perfect place to disconnect from the world a bit and really relax and enjoy the natural surroundings. Martha is a wonderful host, and thanks to her tips we had an amazing time.

Old Moorens is a cosy, traditional crofthouse on the rugged and beautiful West-side of Shetland. Charming and full of character, the house is situated only 200 metres from a quiet, shingly beach with beautiful sunset views. As well as this, it is only a short, 5 minute walk, to the main West-side bus route. The perfect base for exploring the many attractions Shetland has to offer in all seasons. Fresh, light and airy in the summer months with a wood burning stove for the colder nights.
Set in it's own garden, with ample parking, the house is arranged over two floors. Downstairs, there is a cosy sitting room with wood burning stove. The perfect space for relaxing in after a busy day sightseeing or walking. At the other end of the entrance passage is the dining kitchen with electric cooker, microwave, fridge-freezer and dishwasher. There is also a Nespresso coffee machine for your morning cup. The washing machine is also in the kitchen, with clothes horse available as well as access to an outdoor clothes line. The final room downstairs is the toilet/shower room. Access to the upstairs is via a staircase ascending from the dining kitchen. The upstairs space is light and airy with lovely views to the sea. The main bedroom offers the comfort of a king-size bed and ample storage space. The second bedroom has two single beds.
Tresta is a small hamlet on the West-side of Shetland. It is on the main route West from Shetland, and is very easily accessible, both by car and public transport. It is around a 25 minute drive from the main town of Lerwick. We would advise allowing an hour to drive to the airport in the Sumburgh at the Southern tip of Shetland. The closest shop is 3 miles away. The local shops are very well stocked, but opening times are variable, especially on a Sunday. We'd encourage you to shop locally, however, there are two supermarkets in the main town of Lerwick, with longer opening hours if required. The Old Moorens is situatued on a croft (or small farmstead), which has belonged in our family for over 100 years. The house is soaked in character and history and is, as you'd imagine, very special to us. The land is now mainly used for sheep grazing at various times of the year. There is a burn (or stream), which runs through the croft and offers a beautiful array of wild flowers during the summer months. There is also direct access to a beach, where many wild birds nest. A walk on our beach can either be peaceful on a calm summers evening, or bracing and invigorating on a windy day.
  • What a wonderful cottage - beautifully decked out, snug against the weather, and with a warm welcome from Jacqueline. It's a great location for exploring all parts of the island, and I'd recommend using the local shops (rather than Tesco in Lerwick) to get your hands on good local produce - Bixter nearby or Scalloway for a bigger shop, and Andersons butchers in Whiteness.

    Anna2017-09-20T00:00:00Z
  • The house is so well situated for exploring shetland or simply for being cosy indoors. It is very comfortable and tastefully provided. Hosts were very thoughtful and excellent at communicating. Highly recommend old moorens.

    Roberta2017-09-27T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely cosy cottage in an excellent location

    Juliet2017-10-23T00:00:00Z
  • A rustic cottage with a modern twist. Accommodations were very clean and featured full amenities. The comfortably furnished den had a fantastic wood stove and a good supply of firewood and peat for the cool evenings, also the cottage has been outfitted with radiator heating in every room. Kitchen is suitable for cooking full meals (i.e., large appliances). WiFi - internet - mobile coverage is very good, so you will not be out of contact. Overall, a fantastic spot for a weekend getaway of hiking, birding, etc. Nice quiet area but reasonably close to Lerwick and a local grocery just down the road in the next village. Highly Recommended.

    Sean2017-10-09T00:00:00Z
  • Jacqueline's cottage was exactly as described. It was perfect for our few days on Shetland. Wonderful setting, wonderful hospitality.

    Steve and Kate2017-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • A great autumnal break in a very clean, pretty, cosy and comfortable house. Jacqueline provided a personalised welcome with a very thoughtful 'welcome pack'. The house is in a lovely spot and was a great base for us. There is lots of interesting and informative literature available in the house - it's evident that a lot of thought and attention to detail has gone into making it very Shetland-friendly (Wood-burning fire and views over the voe day and star- filled night, fabulous!). We had lovely days out in Eshaness; Burra and Whalsay. We would recommend Old Moorens unreservedly.

Lingarth is a cosy croft house restored to modern standards between 2008 - 2015. Two double bedrooms, a modern kitchen and bathroom, a warm sitting room and a sun-porch with views of the sea and cliffs.
This 250+ year old cottage has been restored to modern standards of insulation and finish. A super-cosy sitting room with solid fuel stove, a lovely kitchen that is homely but modern, and a beautiful setting in the heart of Cullivoe, looking across at the cliffs of the Blue Mull and the waters of the Bluemull Sound. The house will feel like your own home during your stay - clean and ready for you - but is full of history and personality with books, paintings and pictures that complement its location.
Cullivoe is a lovely small village with a population of around 200 friendly and welcoming souls. There is a small shop for the basics, a village hall that has frequent social evenings, and beautiful walks and views throughout the area.
  • Beautiful house in a lovely quiet area of Cullivoe. We didn't meet during our stay as we arrived very late on Friday night, but everything was in place to mean that getting settled was as easy as it could be.

    Christina2016-11-06T00:00:00Z
  • This house is lovely! Finished to a high standard with a great sound system. We had a fantastic time exploring Yell and visiting the gorgeous beach nearby.

    Christina2017-09-03T00:00:00Z

  • Beautiful sunsets and views; lovely cosy house; great beaches very close by and a perfect base for exploring Yell and Unst. The house was immaculately clean and getting the key was easy, Barry was very helpful. Highly recommend!

    Susan2017-08-10T00:00:00Z
  • A really lovely place to stay on Yell. The cottage is beautifully renovated and very warm. The kitchen has everything you need and lots of space to cook. The bathroom is also very large and clean. There are lots of interesting books in the living room and there is a nice view of Unst. We stopped in Lerwick at Tesco on the way up to get groceries, as it is a very large super market. My family really enjoyed staying here and our only disappointment was not staying longer than two nights!

    Heather2016-07-14T00:00:00Z
  • Barry's house was comfortable and cosy. It was well situated for us and we walked much of the coast of Yell as well as visiting the islands of Unst and Fetlar. It was a perfect place for wild landscapes and seeing wildlife. If you are looking for a wide range of amenities you will not find them here and may be better based on Mainland. However we got everything we needed from the local Cullivoe shop and "Mary's" at Aywick. We would also recommend eating out at L J's at Mid Yell.

A charming spacious house, centrally located, ideally suited to families, groups, business travelers or indeed anyone needing a place to stay in Lerwick. The property is just off of Commercial street and benifits from having, we think, the best homemade cakes, snacks and coffee in town, next door. Very close to all you could need during your stay.
This property is a great choice for group of friends visiting Shetland for any reason ie Up Helly Aa or any of our other festivals( folk festival, fiddle and accordian festival, fiddle frenzy, blues festival, wool week etc) A great base to use to explore some of th UK's most dramatic coastline, also very popular with birdwatchers. With the Havly Cafe next door there is homemade cakes, snacks and drinks all day. A special discount in the cafe for all guests at breakfast.
Centrally located in town off the main street but very peacefull and quiet.
  • Marianne is absolutely wonderful! She gives an immediate response when you contact here. The bungalow was in a perfect location close to town, restaurants, pubs and public transport, all in about a 5 minute walk.

  • Cosy croft with comfy beds. Internal stairs are very steep so anyone with mobility issues (or after a few drinks!) might struggle. Great food welcoming pack and lots of useful food items in the cupboards. Very peaceful setting and the thick stone walls kept out the noise of the wind! Great stay.

A cosy stone built cottage, circa 1800, in a superb location on the outskirts of Lerwick. Gorgeous sea view, with the Sands of Sound beach just down the road and great access to coastal walks. Easy walking distance to Tesco and the Clickimin Leisure Complex, with Lerwick town centre only 1.25 miles away. There's a well equipped kitchen with a pully for drying clothes and also a good size living room. Mavine Cottage is a great base from which to explore all Shetland has to offer.
The cottage, (NEW to the holiday let market in July 2017) which would originally have been a 'but and ben' has been extended during its lifetime with a kitchen at one end and a second bedroom and bathroom on the front. There is a small shed just outside the back door, which is large enough to store bikes or other outdoor equipment. The cottage is heated via the Lerwick District Heating scheme which is a locally efficient way of heating your home and provides a constant source of hot water.
The cottage really is in a great spot in Shetland's capital with its close proximity to the sea. The fields in front of the cottage are 'green belt' and are used mainly for grazing horses and ponies so It feels secluded, but at the same time is so handy for shops, eateries, Shetland Museum and Archives and Mareel (cinema and music venue). The beautiful historic Picts Castle which sits in the loch at Clickimin is also a very close 5-10 minute walk away.
  • Thank you for a wonderful stay in your lovely cottage! The location could not have been more perfect: beautiful scenery all around just waiting to be explored! In particular, Sands of Sound beach just down the road with its gorgeous white sand and the interesting coves round the corner, home to at least 12 seals! The short walking distance to Tesco was very handy and a refreshing 25 minute walk into Lerwick was great for learning about the culture (including knitwear, fiddle music and those famous vikings!) and catching the ferry to the neighbouring island Bressay. After a day out in the wild, the warm cosiness of the cottage was a lovely way to be greeted, especially the living room, I became very fond the armchair!

  • The cottage is quiet, cosy but surprisingly roomy with lovely views of the Sound and within easy reach of local amenities and a short walk to the old harbour area. Lois was a great host with great communication prior to our stay, at check in and check out. Lois even helped to re-unite me after we had checked out with an item of clothing I had left behind. We had a lovely stay and would recommend to other. We would be very happy to come back.

    Robin2017-10-03T00:00:00Z
  • Lois's Airbnb has a really homely feel and was a delight to stay in. It's really good value for money and I recommend it wholeheartedly. Thank you Lois ☺️

  • The cottage is full of charm and in an incredibly beautiful setting, still within walking distance of town. All amenities available and immaculately clean. This is great value for the money.

  • Lois's place is amazing. So comfortable and warm with a lovely sea view. Our stay was made better by the warm welcome we received from Lois. We definitely recommend this place!

  • Mavine Cottage was brilliant, very cosy, clean and full of character. Lois was the perfect host greeting us on arrival and departure. Also letting us check in early and depart late, which really helped us out. Great value for money and we will make sure we stay again on our next trip to Lerwick.

This apartment is in the heart of Lerwick and within easy reach of all local amenities and visitor attractions. This spacious property is ideal for families, friends and business travellers and is an ideal base for your holiday to Shetland. The apartment offers great views of the north harbour due to the elevated position. The property has secure entry and private parking.
The property has 3 double bedrooms, 2 bathrooms both of which have showers, utility room and plenty of storage and hanging space.
  • Julie's place was above and beyond our expectations. The photos do not do it justice how lovely and cosy (even though it's a rather generous space!) this flat is. Julie even put in special touches- such as pastries, shortbread, milk and sparkling water in the fridge for our arrival. She even met us at the door and answered all of our questions and made sure we were settled in- including giving us top tips for dinner and sight seeing places. I really cannot recommend Julie's place more. It's in walking distance to the centre of Lerwick, as well as easy to find and a great hub for to explore the other sights of Shetland from.

    Genevieve2017-10-21T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent apartment great shower amazing view

    Sean2017-07-12T00:00:00Z
  • Great venue, close to the centre and some good local restaurants. Julie was extremely welcoming.

  • If you are planning to visit Lerwick, Shetland, Julie's flat is a fantastic place to stay. It is lovely, clean, comfortable and very well-equipped. As well, you can walk everywhere in town. Julie left some goodies for our arrival which were lovely-so thoughtful. All four of us would recommend Julie's flat most enthusiastically for your Shetland stay.

    Alastair2017-09-21T00:00:00Z
  • Julie's apartment is stunning. Much larger than it looks in the photos. Absolutely everything you could hope for - immaculately clean throughout with fresh linen and towels in plentiful supply. Loads of hot water for the two great showers. Julie was so generous and checked us in early as there had been nobody staying the previous night. Her warm and friendly welcome got our amazing trip to beautiful Shetland off to a great start!

    Lindsay2017-08-14T00:00:00Z
  • Julie was an excelent host. She had bought muffins and some groceries before we arrived. The appartment was clean and beautiful. We will definately recomend it.

    Amund2017-07-18T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic flat overlooking Lerwick harbour. Flat covers the entire top floor of the building and is very spacious. There is a co-op, Indian, premier convenience store and a one stop "we sell everything" grocers all within walking distance. Even though we didn't meet Julie she was a great host, with all the essentials included in the flat. Julie was also very flexible with check in/check out times which was very much appreciated. Would defiantly stay again if back up in Shetland.

We've listed some of our favourite attractions, shops, restaurants, etc in our Guidebook - take a look.
  • The 'Waddle' is so warm and cosy. The character of the home is very unusual and unique. Really enjoyed the comforts of home away from home. Fiona thanks for everything. The Waddle is truly a beautiful home. We will be back!

    Aachal2017-01-30T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed our stay in the Waddle! The house has absolutely everything you might need during your stay (from sharp knives in the kitchen to cotton buds in the bathroom, and everything in between). The view is excellent and Fiona is such a lovely host! We would definitely recommend staying here.

    Jody2017-04-06T00:00:00Z
  • The house is so clean and beautiful. Fiona the host is so friendly and very helpful. The area is stunningly beautiful. I highly recommend it. I had an unforgettable stay.

    Natasha2016-10-01T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed this beautiful spot and well decked-out house. Had a little trouble finding it but with Fiona's help on the phone we came to the right place. The house has nearly everything one could wish for in a holiday home. The area is very nice for longer or shorter walks. We spotted an otter - very exciting. The shop/bakery in Walls is quite nice, but perhaps it makes sense to bring groceries from Lerwick about 40 mins drive away. We'd definitely recommend seakayaking! Many thanks to Fiona and her family for renting out this place.

My house is on a working croft or small farm. The area is very quiet. A safe place to relax and enjoy the local wildlife. Great walking country.
  • Bruce offers a nice big house, surrounded by sheep and stunning Shetland nature. He was very helpful during our whole stay and frequently offered us lifts to the shop as we didn't have a car. His wife even took us to a neighbouring town when no buses would go on a Sunday. The house itself is very clean, homey and offers everything you need. The only negative aspect was the very cold living room (with drafty windows), but there are enough blankets to make it comfortable nevertheless! All in all it was a very pleasant stay with many comfortable evenings spent in front of the fire.

    Natalie2017-10-04T00:00:00Z
  • A fantastic holiday overlooking the sea in an old croft house, tracing family roots in the area whilst watching the new born lambs wobble about in the fields. A great place to holiday!

  • Midfield Croft is a lovely place to stay and Bruce makes you feel right at home there. We loved our short stay at Bardister and will definitely be returning. The peace and quiet is just wonderful.

  • Very quiet place in the middle of North Mavine. The fireplace was definitely welcomed on a cold and snowy night. I'd definitely recommend it

    Jana2017-04-23T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed here for 3 nights and loved the house, the facilities and the location. If you want rural peace and quiet, awesome views and a cosy home then this is the place for you. What we liked: Log burner, and cosy heaters in all rooms. Very well equipped kitchen, the slow cooker was a brilliant touch. Go out for the day and come back to the smell of your dinner waiting for you Fabulous bathroom - there's no photo but it is very modern with a corner waterfall shower and a separate bath What we didn't like: still trying to think of something..... Tips: Go to Brae and par-take in the Fish and Chips. Award wining and well deserved! Go to Esha Ness, the landscape is fabulous and the sea beautiful

Our apartment is in a prime central location overlooking the quaint little main street - as close to the centre and all the activities of Lerwick as you can get! Watch the Up Helly Aa Vikings parade below your window or step outside to watch - if you dare! With its own entrance in one of the historic lanes, enjoy the benefits of a modern, well-equipped apartment in a historic listed building. Near to shops, pubs, restaurants. Ideal for couples, solo adventurers and business travellers.
Fiona and Nick welcome you to our very central, modern and comfortable 1 bedroom flat - handy for all amenities. Live like a local and stay right in the heart of Lerwick's town centre! In great condition, our bright and airy flat was newly created in 2013 in a historic listed building in a conservation area in the centre of Lerwick and we have recently installed new double glazed windows. The flat is heated by electric storage heaters throughout and an electric heated towel rail in the bathroom. Shetland Soap Company toiletries provided. With one cosy double bedroom, the flat is suitable for single people or couples. However we do have an easy pull-out double sofa bed in the living space and are happy to welcome up to 2 additional adults. While perhaps not as comfortable as a standard bed, we have a memory foam topper which provides a good night’s sleep.
Overlooking the quaint, little main shopping street (pedestrianised in the daytime) and situated in one of the many old, narrow lanes, everything Lerwick has to offer is right outside your front door - shops, restaurants, pubs, the busy harbour and waterfront, the historic Fort Charlotte and Iron Age Clickimin Broch, the state of the art Mareel cinema & music venue, the prestigious Shetland Museum, parks, Clickimin leisure centre with swimming pools and flumes - you name it, Lerwick has got it. The locals? Reknowned for their friendliness and hospitality.
  • A delightful, clean, well-equipped place to stay in the charming old centre of Lerwick. Fiona and Nick met us and explained thoroughly all that we needed to know. A lovely place to stay.

  • Fiona provided everything a guest could need and more, and we really appreciated the personal greeting, local coffee and bread. She'd thought of everything, wish I'd had time to watch the third series of Shetland, I loved the first two! The location was perfect and we made use of the wine shop and the car park was super handy. We totally recommend this as a base for your Shetland experience.

    Saya2017-09-05T00:00:00Z
  • This is a superb place to stay! The facilities are top class, the bed is very comfy and the shower is great. The apartment was warm during some cool summer days and the location is so convenient if you want to be near the historic area, harbour, shops, museum etc all within short walking distance. I was travelling on my own and it was all so perfect for my needs. The hosts are lovely people who have put a lot of thought into the needs of their visitors which makes their apartment feel like your home away from home. I warmly recommend this accommodation to single travellers or couples . Jocelyn

  • Really a wonderful little flat in the heart of Lerwick, just a minute's walk from the Victoria Pier and not two minutes from the bus stop. A light, pretty flat that feels very homey, with modern appliances, a spacious bathroom and shower, and a very comfortable bed. Would definitely recommend.

  • Although suffered seasickness in the ferry, Brian and Zoya showed us the warmest welcome that really make me feel like home. Very comfortable homestay with well furnished bedroom and dining room and sweet cats. Knowing we dont drive, Brian took us to visit some marvellous view points in Lerwick, and Zoya's English breakfast was very cool! It was an amazing journey to me and I really missed Brian and Zoya when I came back to Aberdeen and still missing them(and their cats) now.

  • We had a great time at Shetland, thanks to Brian and Zoja's great hospitality. Brian and Zoja's friendliness, well kept rooms, and hot coffee gave us a warm welcome after a 12 hour ferry, which rejuvenated us. Every day, they provided us with delicious breakfast and essentials. Zoja even put fresh flowers in our private lounge. Brian was very helpful and provided a lot of tips for exploring Shetland, which made our trip easy. To anyone planning to visit Shetland, we highly recommend 'Da Broch' where you will get comfy rooms, good breakfast, and even a taxi service. Da Broch is situated in a beautiful location and is very close to the city (including Tesco at walking distance). Joe & Vinu - Monymusk, Scotland

  • Hillswick is a little village well situated in order to explore the north of the island. It has a village shop, do try the local chutney and post office. Several places to eat out in nearby Brae. Margaret's lovely airbnb cottage is well placed with a superb view of the Atlantic Ocean, picturesque coves and beautiful walks. Margaret and Jeff were charming and very informed about the area, unobtrusive but there if you needed them. The cottage has everything you need and more. We left wishing we could have stayed a bit longer.

  • On arrival, we were very grateful for the friendly ,thorough explanation of the running of the studio. It was lovely to come in to a cosy spot, with surprise bottle of wine chilling after our long day's walk! The views from the garden are really stunning - we'll keep these images in our heads for a while. The studio itself was really clean and comfortable; we would love to think we could return sometime as there are lots more we would have liked to see and do in this area, our 3 nights felt too short!

The best times for puffins is June and early July. Also the neighboring islands of Yell and Fetlar are perfect for day trips. Artists/Writers Residencies May and September 2016 I am offering week long stays for artists and writers in my studio, a chance to work on the beautiful island of Unst. The prices are for single occupancy and vegetarian meals are offered on a donation basis. Please contact me to discuss any specific needs you may have around your work space.
  • Tony's unit is located in one of the most scenic areas of the Shetland Isles. Beautiful walks are at your doorstep. Inside, the studio, bathroom and kitchen are comfortable, warm and inviting. Tony's insights into island life, through living here for over 12 years, are unique. He is a generous and thoughtful host, and his vegetarian cooking is delicious. Looking for the real Unst experience .... here it is. Highly recommended.

  • Tony Humbleyard is an excellent host, friendly, helpful and he really makes one feeling very welcome at his place. We stayed at his Studio, which is a great place, comfortable, clean, with a very good bed. Although he has a very nice living room we spent most of the time sitting together in the kitchen around his old beautiful kitchen table. We cooked together and have been talking sometimes for hours. Tony gave us very good advice where to go, which walks we should make ... We recommend Tony's place highly to everyone who loves a comfortable, rural surrounding with the possibility to walk through nature right from the doorstep. Tony is an uncomplicated guy who makes it really easy to feel home for the time staying. If you like to visit the Shetlands and intend going to Unst Tony's place is the one to stay!

  • We had a absolutely wonderful time with Tony at his exceptionally nice place up in the North of Shetland. A mystical, silent and beautiful landscape. Tony, thank you so much for the wonderful tasty food and your time you gave us. We would definitely like to come back. Ursula und Regula CH

  • The location is perfect, one side is sea and the other is entrance of natural preserve; the best scenery is all are here. I like the room a lot, clean while with style and even have a great view from the window toward the doorway. And don't miss host Tony's dinner, yummy!

  • I can gladly and eagerly recommend Muckle Flugga Shorestation. This place offers an overwhelmingly scenery, great vegetarian food and a host (Tony) who is genuine, generous and interesting just like the surroundings.

    Max2015-09-11T00:00:00Z
  • For a first travel to Shetland Islands it's was amazing ! Tony is living in wonderful place et he's cooking very well. For sure we will come back at the Shorestation by Tony. He's nice men and we had very interesting discussions.

    Sophie2014-08-16T00:00:00Z
  • Being an artist as well, I found Tony's space was ideal for me to work in. Going for long walks and then returning to a warm comfy studio to paint my impressions was a gift. Hermaness is a special place both in a physical as well as a metaphysical sense. Tony is a sensitive and generous host able to understand the personalities and requirements of each of his guests. He is also a wonderful cook. Just a pleasure staying at One Muckle Flugga Shorestation. Thanks Tony

    margaret2016-08-16T00:00:00Z
  • We absolutely loved our stay at Muckleflugga Shorestation. The location itself is absolutely stunning, with gorgeous views of the cliffs and the sea, and the house is located right beside the RSPB reserve at Hermaness. Tony was as good a host as we could have asked for, was so accommodating and knowledgeable about the surrounding area and the local history, and was an absolute pleasure to stay with. The island of Unst itself is beautiful and well worth the trip - we could recommend staying here highly enough. Thanks for everything Tony!

  • We spent a lovely long weekend at Paula's bungalow in Lerwick. Newly decorated to a high standard and very well located to get into Lerwick and to get around the mainland, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Paula was super welcoming - with some additional provisions laid on for arrival as well as flexible in accommodating our check-in and check-out around our flights. A great base for our Shetland exploration.

    Clare2017-08-13T00:00:00Z
  • This is a beautiful holiday home. We had a magnificent time visiting historic family sites around Shetland. Coming home to such a lovely house was wonderful. We did not get to meet Paula, but she made sure we had everything we needed. We did have a nice chat with the neighbour :-) We are so grateful.

    Judy2017-07-09T00:00:00Z
  • I booked the accommodation on behalf of two clients for a trip. They were very pleased with the accommodation. Communication was excellent. Thanks again to Paula.

  • We had a great stay at Susan's flat. It was clean, comfortable, and a great home base for our Shetland excursions.

    Alexander2017-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent, comfortable and well equipped accommodation which was perfect for our business trip to Lerwick. Susan was well organised and welcoming with fresh provisions for breakfast which was thoughtful with our late arrival. I would certainly stay here again.

  • Comfortable well appointed and spacious; everything convenient and right for our needs.

    Kenneth2017-08-21T00:00:00Z
  • Susan's place was great. She and her husband were very friendly and met us at the flat with keys at our scheduled time. There was a booklet with instructions on how to operate appliances, etc and a folder with things to see and do in the area. The flat was spacious and well furnished, the beds were super comfortable. There was coffee, tea, milk and other comforts, Susan had even bought us a loaf of bread, it was easy to feel at home there. The flat is in a great location, it is quiet and there is ample parking. We would definitely stay again. Thanks Susan!

  • Susan’s flat was the perfect starting point for my initiation to the Shetlands. Susan was very accommodating collecting me from the ferry and making certain I was well settled in; complete with bread and Shetland butter. Her lovely, clean and convenient flat left nothing you be desired. Everything I needed was there and within a short walk of the city center. Will certainly look to her flat again for a future stay. Living like a local - just wonderful. Thank you, Susan!

    Sophia2017-10-08T00:00:00Z
  • The flat is a lovely, homely and surprisingly spacious place to stay while in Lerwick. It's no more than about 15 minutes from anywhere you would like to go in town. Susan was very friendly and straightforward in helping with our stay. Can very much recommend this as a base for visiting Shetland.

    Douglas2017-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect flat on a very central location. The owner met us on arrival and showed us around the flat. The personal touch was superb. We were afforded use of everything in the flat including and food, toiletries and fresh bread and home made tray bakes! Perfect touch. This is a family home and has everything you need. Highly recommend.

Lerwick, Shetland's Capital, is a bustling, cosmopolitan seaport with services and amenities only usually found in much larger places on the British mainland. The extensive leisure and entertainment facilities provide warm hospitality to visitors. The old waterfront is thronged with pleasure boats, visiting yachts, historic craft and working fishing boats. There's a variety of lively bars and clubs, ranging from popular "theme" bars to more traditional hostelries. Lerwick is Shetland's only town, with a population of about 7,500 - although about half of the islands' 22,000 people live within 10 miles of the burgh. The town has an excellent leisure centre, with a swimming pool. Mareel offers two cinemas showing a very wide range of films, The Sycamores is located in the historic 'Lanes' part of Lerwick - in the area between the listed Town Hall and the main shopping street of Commercial Street. It is a quiet location, especially in the garden where you will hear the calls of seabirds rather than traffic. Busy during the day, Lerwick is quiet in the evenings (apart from Saturday). 30 second walk to Commercial Street - one minute to the jubilee flower gardens. Restaurants and good takeaways (Indian/Chinese/fish and chips) within 5-10 minutes walk.
  • A beautiful, and extremely well presented house, right in the centre of town. Parking and getting to the place is very easy, and the lovely welcome from the host was great, running through details of everything we needed. As a nice change, rather than a bare, empty "bnb" house, this one is beautifully decorated and with some very tasteful artwork and detail. All modern expectations met, with great kitchen, broadband, fantastic shows etc, and comfortable beds. Highly recommended, and if the owner ever wishes to sell, I'd be very tempted to move in full time myself?

  • Sarah's welcome at Cozy Neuk is very friendly and helpful. She even found some binoculars to lend me when I said I'd forgotten my own. The cottage is warm and comfortable and very well stocked. It is in a very quiet spot and Sarah lives just two doors away in case there are any problems (there weren't). The view from the back window is very rural and the walk to the co-op just a minute or two. I can't say we are likely to go back to Shetland but if we were I would definitely stay here again.

One double bedroom en-suite shower room with power shower. Fully modernised kitchen diner with all amenities including washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, induction hob and oven. The area is very quiet and safe situated off the main road on a private lane. There are no street light just peace and quiet except perhaps the chatter of birds in the early morning. Beautiful tranquil walks are on the doorstep. Very friendly neighbours who would be will to chat an d give directions if needed.
  • A small, comfortable annex -- extremely well-appointed -- in a village a few miles south of Lerwick. Although considered a village it is more like a collection of houses; the closest shops (small & limited) are a couple of miles south and the larger shops are in Lerwick. I was without a car, walking and taking public transport. The bus is just a minute or so away, going north and south. I had no trouble getting about the entire island of Mainland to those parts I wanted to visit. For those with a vehicle it is even easier. The annex is bright, with lots of glass through which to view the hills and birdlife. There is far more than anything you might need or want during your stay & Elizabeth is just next-door in the main house. There is also a lovely sun deck for outdoor relaxing, should weather allow. I had a great stay. Hard to leave.

    Karyn2017-07-09T00:00:00Z
  • We were lucky enough to be the first to stay in the house rather than the annex, which was beautiful. In short, you must stay here. In all my years of travelling I can’t remember staying in anywhere so perfect. Elizabeth was a fantastic host.

3* Shetland Self Catering Holiday Houses at Nordabrake If you're looking for Shetland self catering accommodation, our Nordabrake self catering houses are ideal for parties of all shapes and sizes, from couples to families to larger parties wanting to rent several houses together: for people wanting to do their own thing while taking advantage of our facilities as and when it suits. You can cater entirely for yourself/ves in a fully-fitted kitchen, or alternatively you can relax while enjoying delicious meals in our restaurant.
Unst is a mere 12 miles from north to south and 5 from east to west. Although small there are plenty of things to see and experience. Stand on the summit of the hill of Saxa Vord, the most northerly hill on the most northerly populated island in Britain, and stretch your eyes: To the north, just offshore, lie the rock outcrops of Muckle Flugga and Out Stack – Britain’s most northerly outposts. Next stop: the Arctic. To the east, less than 200 miles away, lies Norway. To the south lies Unst – and beyond that, over 600 miles away, London. Due west, beyond the north tips of Yell and Mainland Shetland, and across the restless Atlantic, lies Greenland.
Villages – small crofting townships like Baltasound, Haroldswick, Norwick and Uyeasound – are situated close to the coast, demonstrating the island’s traditional dependency on fishing and agriculture. Today that dependency remains and the people of Unst (population around 600), who are immensely proud of their cultural heritage, many tracing their ancestry back to Norse times, still live very traditional lives. Crofting, fishing, and fish and shellfish farming are still key to the island’s economy, though tourism, construction, transport and craft industries, with local manufacturers like NorNova Knitwear, all have crucial roles to play.

  • I did not meet Andrew, but hostess Caroline was very hospitable and in addition to providing substantial and very satisfying breakfasts she was able to offer a good deal of helpful advice for touring the islands, and upon local weather conditions. Solheim is about a mile from the centre of Lerwick, and a long walk from the ferry terminal, so you would ideally need to rent a car for staying at this location and for touring the islands, which are much larger than they look on a map !

I have 9 chalets in total built on a hillside, with the most stunning views in Shetland. - Guaranteed. The chalets are all the same size and condition, 3 stars with Visit Scotland. With very reasonable prices.
  • These chalets are very nice and clean and have wonderful views. We would absolutely stay here again next time. They can be a little tricky to find because there's a turn off on a curve that isn't obvious until you're upon it but they are definitely worth finding.

    Janet2017-06-16T00:00:00Z
  • Visited Shetland for Wool Week. It was amazing to have a whole little cottage to myself after a long day. The views can't be beat, and it is convenient to the bus stop. Be aware, however, if you're not renting a car and relying on the bus that the villas can only be accessed via a long, steep staircase. It wasn't a big deal for me, but something to think about if you don't want a workout at the end of the day. Having access to a laundry room was great, too. Overall, great stay!

    Rachael2017-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful place to stay!

    Lydiya2017-05-26T00:00:00Z
  • These chalets are set on a hillside above Scalloway harbour, with a view of the castle. It's easy to miss the entrance when coming from Lerwick. There are nine chalets, and the best views are from chalets 7, 8 and 9, but you need to be happy with steps. We were in number2 wheretheroofsofthechaletsbelowformedpartoftheview. The chalets have been carefully laid out so that you have privacy in the living room, and curtaining to give you privacy in the double bedroom. They are surrounded by nicely kept grass and wild orchids as well as a flowerbed at the top. There is a laundry shed with washing machines and tumble dryers. The chalets consist of a bathroom with a heated towel rail if you want it. There is a shower. There is a double room with a double bed and a generous wardrobe. There is also a double room with two single beds and a generous wardrobe. The living room has windows to the side and towards the lovely view. There is a comfortable settee and another chair. There is a nice table and six chairs, and a useful cupboard which we used to keep dry food in. The kitchen is tiny but very functional, especially when you consider that you do have storage in the living room. There is a microwave, cooker, kettle and toaster, well as cooking things ... our chalet had an excellent frying pan! These chalets are not modern but they are comfortable, with plenty of heaters should you need them.

    Jessica2017-07-25T00:00:00Z
  • The chalet was comfortable, and conveniently located. It had all the facilities required for a trouble free self catering experience, with clear instructions, and overall was a very comfortable stay. It was comforting to know that in spite of the inclement Shetland weather in October we had a warm and comfortable space to return to in the evenings! Thank you Sarah

  • A lovely wee flat with a nice view. Sophie made us feel very welcome with home made bread and accurate info about the place. She allowed us to stay until the ferry on the last day, which was very welcome as we needed a bit of relaxation time. A little noisy at closing time on the weekend, as the flat is right in town. If you have a car, the easiest place to park is on Hillhead though it's a bit of a hill to get there. Very good value for money.

  • Sophie's flat was comfortable and in a great location.Sophie met me as planned for a smooth handover of keys and left me ample breakfast supplies . A good experience and I'd happily stay again on my next visit

  • Had a lovely time here. We didn't have car with us but could walk easily to range of restaurants and shops. There are local buses near by but timetable checking essential! Good view of harbour. V easy check in. Lovely bright flat. Would suggest an eye mask as too bright this far north in summer for sleeping. Had to cover face with duvet otherwise great. Nice hot shower. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

  • Sophie's place was a perfect base for our first (short) trip to Shetland. Sophie was super friendly and communicative, and we had everything we needed. The pictures don't do the place justice!

  • Very central. Has 3 flights of stairs. Interesting decor, comfy bed and all you could want and more in terms of appliances, food, flowers, extras and interesting stuff to read.

  • Sophie's place was cosy and so comforting to stay in. Brilliant location in the old part of Lerwick town. I would recommend it as a great stay. Sophie also went the extra yards with local eggs and bread for my breakfast! I would love to stay again next time I come.

Quiet, clean, warm and conveniently located near the airport, James' Balivanich house is the perfect base from which to explore the islands of the Outer Hebrides. Highly recommended.
