The cottage is close to fishing, the river Nith, woodland and far reaching valley views. The situation of this listed cottage is on a private track, very peaceful and nestled amongst established mixed woodland once part of the Barjarg Estate. The beds have memory foam mattresses with ironed cotton sheets. Centrally heated with wood stove. Opposite the cottage is a woodland track leading to a 1.3 acre walled garden. Host is situated 2 minutes walk away out of view for complete privacy.
The cottage is located on a private track as part of an old estate dating back to the 16th Century. Full of charm and history, the Back Lodge is a well maintained, recently refurbished listed cottage with original features, attractive wallpapers throughout and styled for comfort and relaxation. A victorian walled garden is located 90m from the front door, hosting a variety of organic fruit trees and bushes and currently being re-instated. The garden is surrounded by 8 acres of mixed woodland and paddock owned by the host, therefore you are guaranteed peace, quiet and privacy. The host lives in a cottage 2 minute walk down the private track to assist with any questions and to welcome you, but out of sight for your privacy and feeling of being completely surrounded by nature. 10 minute walk from the cottage is a well reputed and popular fishing beat; Barjarg Fishings with a comfortable fishing hut and 2 miles of salmon, sea trout and grayling fishing. Permits can be obtained in advance of your booking.
The main attraction for our visitors is the peaceful location set far from any main roads, plus the additional bonus of being on a private track leading to a dead-end so no other passing traffic other than the hosts. The charm of the cottage sets the scene for a genuinely natural beauty spot with traditional features. Barjarg Fishings on the Nith is less than a 10 minute walk away on a quite woodland road. The fishing beat is 2500m long and has a superb fishing cabin with heating, tea/coffee facilities and toilet. The River Nith is excellent for salmon, trout and grayling and can be booked through the fishpal website http://www.fishpal.com/Scotland/Nith/Barjarg Barjarg Tower nearby is a historic landmark, well tucked away and dates back to the 16th Century, however it is privately owned and not open to visitors. Only on occasions are the wonderful and established Estate gardens are open to the public.
  • Such a charming place to stay. Jakob prepares the fireplace with firewood, matches, and kindling making the cottage stay even cosier. The views on the way to the cottage will absolutely take your breath away, too!

  • A lovely authentic and charming cottage to stay in complete tranquility. Also, perfectly placed to explore the gorgeous countryside. Would highly recommend.

  • Cosy little cottage in the most beautiful and peaceful location. Jakob was most helpful and considerate, highly recommended.

  • Jakob is a fantastic host. You want for nothing when you stay here. The house is very much off the beaten track and the location is stunning. I hadn't seen much of South-West Scotland, but this place is a great base from which to explore. Thanks Jakob!

  • A fabulous stay in a charming cottage with bags of character. If you are looking for peace and quiet surrounded by beautiful countryside look no further. Everything we needed was provided with thoughtful and useful advice leaflets given. Jakob was available if needed but otherwise left us to it- just as we like it. Spent a lovely quiet new year with the family in front of the log burner playing games. Particularly liked that the kitchen was well equipped (as I like to cook) so that I could cook a roast dinner on New Year's Day. Would definitely recommend.

  • Beautiful cottage in a lovely, remote, peaceful spot. Jakob is a wonderful host and made us feel most welcome. Our roaring fire on a cold winters night made our stay even more cosy and memorable. Highly recommended!

  • Our stay at Jakob’s was absolutely magical. Jakob was so helpful and communicative even before we got there. We had asked him to leave out any Christmas decorations we had, as we were spending our holiday away from home. It looks like he went out and collected lights for us! So thoughtful! The directions were easy to follow and the house really is so incredibly cute and cozy—just what we wanted. Just the views getting up to it were gorgeous. We used the wood burning stove every day. Jakob was very communicative and helpful during our entire stay. We wish we could have stayed longer!

    Natalie2019-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • This was a lovely quiet getaway, just what we were after. The cottage is very well maintained and has excellent modern amenities, despite the fact it is very old. We loved the forest streams and walking walking with our dog by the beautiful river nearby. Jakob respects your privacy yet ensures that everything is in place. Thank you very much!

A beautiful home in Thornhill, just 5 minutes from Drumlanrig Castle and 13 miles from Dumfries, complete with a large TV System and outdoor space. This is a perfect place for a Couple to stay and visit the sights of Dumfries & Galloway.
  • We stayed here around two and a half years ago and decided to return with the dog we got just after. We love Thornhill and had wanted to return for a while and our previous stay was great so decided to go for here again. Everything still great, had a lovely time although was sad to see that the two leather chairs had gone and been replaced with a two seater sofa with a blanket over it but actually that’s probably better for a lot of people! We did message and mention we had difficulties in getting hot water which we didn’t receive a reply to - that’s very different from when we stayed here before where we got swift replies. If only one of us had a shower we managed but had to have one person in the morning and another in the evening - just something to be aware of. Still a nice stay and great value for money, love that it’s dog friendly and we got to return to Thomas tosh as well.

  • Lovely little house to stay in. Everything was clean and comfortable. We checked out fairly early on the Sunday morning as we had a bike race to get to, however the staff at the hotel were more than happy to accommodate the earlier than expected check out time! Great location with a lot of attractions near by to explore. Our only regret was only booking the one night! We will certainly be back!!

    Katy2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • As others have said the cottage is much bigger than it looks in the photos. Great place for a weekend away, really comfortable, spacious and modern but still with the charm of a cottage. Huge bed, great shower, big kitchen and very comfortable. We'd love to come back!

    Eloise2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • We loved it here! Clean, stylish and relaxed and excellent value for money. Arthur’s place is the perfect hideaway but also has everything to hand in Thornhill. Local shops, fab bakers and butchers and the hotel connected to this place is a lovely spot for a cocktail too! We also took our 8 month old border terrier who also settled in fantastically and had a ball on the local walks. Definitely recommend and we will definitely be back. Thank you

    Jayne2019-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • This is a fantastic little place. Just the right size for two people I’d say. We took our Labrador as well who had no trouble settling in. Thornhill itself isn’t massive but there’s a Co-op, Spar, fish and chips, a few nice cafes and the hotel on the corner serves a good lunch and a pint. The town is nice and quiet if you ask me. The apartment itself is relatively modern and spacious. It was very clean and well presented. My partner and I stayed there after 2 nights in the Lake District and it wasn’t far to Galloway Forest Park for a nice day out. Some lovely quiet roads around there also for those of you that enjoy the drive! The WiFi was good and the kitchen and bathroom were to a good standard. We will certainly be going back sometime as it’s a great little spot to be close enough to England still or a gateway into Scotland. Cheers.

  • Myself, my husband and my 12 year old stepson had an amazing time staying here. So peaceful and a lovely cottage, full kitchen that meant we could still have homecooked meals, it has an amazing shower! We had a slight mix up with the 3rd bed, but we didn't realise you need to state if you have a 3rd guest, but all sorted within minutes of a phone call to Arthur. Would highly recommend and will definitely book to stay here again in the future.

  • Lovely place in an idyllic town close to many beautiful places for hiking. Food next door at the hotel is fantastic- plus there is a great bakery across the street. Also, the bed is superbly comfy!

Well-appointed, comfortable home and retreat from urban madness. Village shop, tea-room, post office, and Saturday afternoon Church Lunches and Teas provide socialisation, civilisation and comfort in full. Drumlanrig Castle and Glenmarlin water-falls close by. River walks and play-park. There is room DIRECTLY in front of the house for ONE CAR ONLY! Please respect as elderly neighbours adjoining need parking outside their homes. Thank You.
Fishers Holt is my family home which you are invited to enjoy in its entirety. I just ask you to respect the contents and look after them as your own. Many of the items are of great sentimental value but I am taking the risk of them being enjoyed rather than packed away. Please oblige.
Penpont is a small Scottish village with very friendly people who have chosen to live a close-knit and quiet life. It is home to artist Andy Goldsworthy and his Art-work can be seen locally. There is a thriving folk-music scene in the adjoining village of Moniaive and in wider Dumfries and Galloway which also has close connections to our National Bard, Robert Burns. It is the Birth-place of the African explorer Joseph Thomson and a small museum can be visited in Open afternoons.
  • Maggi's is a home from home - it has a warm 'lived in' feel and is full of stuff that is both interesting and useful. Whether its a pack of playing cards or a hot water bottle, you'll find it! Its a very interesting house with lots of nooks and crannies and lovely rooms full of character. And lots of books. We didn't meet Maggi but her son met my son for check in, to make sure the house was warm and to show him the heating etc and I had a lot of communication with Maggi by text and phone - very interesting and friendly and keen to ensure that our stay was comfortable. Penpont village and the area are wonderful - Moniaive a few miles away has a fab pub and also the best Italian restaurant for miles around, and Thornhill has a good set of amenities including a very obliging garage, cashpoints, small supermarkets. We liked Penpont so much we are considering buying a house there. "Haste Ye Back" said Maggi - we will!

    Tessa2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Fabulous hospitality in a cozy cottage full of amazing things. Never a dull moment! Maggi was fab and so attentive and made us feel very welcome. The area is fab, with so much to do and see. Lots of lovely memories. We will be back!

  • Maggi’s house feels very much like a much loved family home full of books, toys, family photos and ornaments.

  • What a beautiful, unique house in the heart of Dumfriesshire. Full of touches that made it the perfect home from home during our family’s stay, the kids loved the Africa room and it was the perfect base to return to after exploring the area. Thanks Maggi for all your help and advice, we’ll be back for sure!

    Matthew2019-08-17T00:00:00Z
  • What a wonderful time we had in this idyllic cottage. One of the most interesting houses I have ever been in. There is such a calming presence about the place that is apparent from the moment you walk in. My 2 kids loved all the books and toys generously made available for them to enjoy. We will definitely be back. Such a lovely part of the country with plenty to do and explore. Thank you again to Maggi for sharing such a lovely space.

Elizabeth Ann Hughes invites you to come and relax in luxury at the delightful Scaurbridge House, Penpont, Thornhill, a graded listed Georgian manse. The perfect place to unwind. Small private country house offering bed and breakfast all tailored to make your stay the very best at the most reasonable price. Welcoming, romantic, log fires, beautiful garden and scenery, great local food. Conveniently positioned for Glasgow, Edinburgh, Ayr and Carlisle.
Scaurbridge House is just 4 miles from Drumlanrig Castle and 30 from Dumfries House. Fishing, shooting, walking, birdwatching, country pursuits and lots of unspoilt nature are in abundance here or nearby. Let me organise an itinerary or wander at will if you prefer. Whatever you choose, you can be assured of my attention to detail and to your individual requirements. Penpont is the birthplace of Joseph Thomson, the African explorer and the home of world renowned artist Andy Goldsworthy. Not far from Dumfries House, Crawick Multiverse, Charles Jencks' Garden of Cosmic Speculation, Craigdarroch House where Annie Lawrie (of the famous song) lived after her marriage and the Galloway Forest and Dark Sky Observatory. If art is your pleasure, there are sculptures by Henry Moore, Rodin and Epstein nearby and many interesting local artists offer visits to their studios showing a highly eclectic range of works during Spring Fling weekend at the end of May and throughout the year. Robert Burns farmed at Ellisland, just 10 miles away and Greyfriars Church was the scene of the killing of the Red Comyn by Robert the Bruce. Penpont lies approximately two miles west of the River Nith surrounded by the gentle hills which afford superb views. This historic area welcomes the fisherman, golfer, naturalist, rambler, cyclist or country lover.
Dumfries and Galloway is hailed as 'Scotland's Best Kept Secret' and Scaurbridge House, just outside the village of Penpont, Thornhill, is exactly that. Attention to detail and the warmest of welcomes makes staying with Elizabeth Ann Hughes a delightful experience. The house is beautifully furnished and decorated and the garden is a haven of peace and calm. Sit at the table beside the little fish pond watching the interesting birds which visit. If you are very quiet, and very lucky, you may see one of the rare red squirrels which scuttle along the dry stone walls on their way to collect pine cones from the old Scots Pine in the quietest corner of the garden. Last week I watched 2 beautiful goldcrests (Britain's smallest bird) busy in my garden. The swallows have arrived and I am looking forward to seeing my other arrivals from Africa such as the pied and spotted flycatchers which will be here soon. Drumlanrig Castle is nearby, go for a lovely walk in any direction and you may come across a sculpture by the world famous artist Andy Goldsworthy who lives in the area. Wander through Thornhill's tree lined avenues and enjoy bijou shopping far removed from the homogeneity of Britain's High Streets or fish on the Nith, 2 miles away. Golf, shooting, tennis, horse riding, walking and cycling can be arranged nearby. The area attracts artists and craftspersons who will be delighted to welcome you to their studios. Back at Scaurbridge, start your day with a wonderful breakfast of fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereals, local bacon, sausages, black pudding or perhaps some smoked salmon with creamy scrambled eggs. Finish with Galloway oatcakes, local honey, fresh, hot, home made scones, and home made jams and marmalade.

  • Really nice cottage and very well equipped with everything we would need for any length of stay. Good general use of space - felt very roomy inside and the bed was huge, which made it extra comfortable for sleeping. Was great to be able to get the fire going on the cold winter's night we stayed. Would definitely like to stay again next time we visit Dumfries and Galloway.

  • We spent an enjoyable 3 days staying here. The accommodation was spotlessly clean and very comfortable . The location is idyllic, peacefully quiet, being part of a larger house in its own grounds with easy safe parking very close. Spoke with the owner who is clearly making an extra effort to make guests feel at home. Highly recommended and would definitely use again.

  • A gorgeous apartment, beautifully furnished with some special touches. Margaret was a great host, making sure we had everything we needed and then leaving us in peace.

    Mary2019-05-13T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely short stay whilst we were visiting family. Margaret's apartment is very nicely decorated and comfortable in a very tranquil and picturesque setting. The apartment has everything needed for a short stay - basic breakfast provisions, toaster, kettle. No cooking facilities, but plenty of nice places to eat nearby. We enjoyed an especially nice meal at the Italian in Moniaive - though book ahead at the weekends, it gets busy. The house gardens are beautiful and the hosts very welcoming. Would definitely stay here again.

  • The Cottage is great for a retreat. I visited the weekend of a bad storm so didn't leave all weekend. It was a lovely place to escape the weather and the sun room still made it feel like I was outside... just protected from the wind and rain. The sauna is a real bonus and simple to use. Everything was very clean and the real fire made evenings cosy. Would recommend it to anyone.

The rooms are very cosy and clean, and the fire place will makes you warm in your heart even in a dark evening. Claire is very gentle and helpful lady who showed me her excellent hospitality. • We have just returned from a lovely week staying at Croftjane Cottage. The cottage was amazing, clean, cosy, beautiful views and lots provided to help with a relaxed holiday! It is a great base to explore the local area. Beautiful walks, Drumlanrig and Caerlaverock Castles to name just a few. We always enjoyed getting back to the cottage after a day exploring and lighting the fire! One of the best holidays we have had. Highly recommended! 😊

    Steven2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely first family holiday for mummy, daddy and 14 week old Benjamin. The cottage is a delight, well located for local attractions and Claire was a great host! I had been looking at other places in Penpont and Monteith and I'm glad we picked here. Will hopefully be back soon as it's only 90 mins from home (Edinburgh).

    Greg2019-11-11T00:00:00Z
  • What an amazing holiday we had a CroftJane. The cottage is deceptively spacious and more than adequate in size for our family of four. It was lovely and clean with brilliant amenities. We didn’t want for anything. It’s in an absolutely stunning location, sitting watching the stars every evening was one of our favourite things to do. If you want peace and quiet but be close enough to plenty of fun days out this is certainly the place. We felt very welcome and nothing was too much trouble. Claire was so responsive and gave us excellent recommendations for local attractions which kept our young boys amused every day. There’s so much to do in the area, we would love to come back again soon. Highly recommended, excellent value for money - you won’t be disappointed.

    Carolyn2019-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely property with outstanding views. After a long drive up from London, Claire made sure the file was going when we arrived. Great location for exploring Southwest Scotland. Would definitely stay here again.

    Joel2019-10-23T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage was very comfortable and situated in a lovely quiet area on the farm - a great view, and surrounded by wildlife. It was rainy outside but we loved the cosy log fire, the changing landscape and the dark night skies. Thornhill is just down the road and has surprisingly good facilities for a village of its size, and the A76 means it's quite well connected too. We had a great time!

    A Theodore2019-10-01T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful location, superb facilities. Fantastic week.

    Kerrie2019-09-18T00:00:00Z
  • Everything about this place is fantastic - Claire was a very welcoming and friendly host, the cottage is lovely, clean and cosy. Beds very comfortable, hot and powerful showers and a well equipped kitchen. The location is peaceful, private and the views are breathtaking. Great local walks and amenities in Thornhill village. We cannot recommend this place enough and we are already looking at booking again next year!

  • A fantastic remote and rural location just what we needed, but only 20 mins from shops, cafes, etc. Zan and Joe lead a busy life day to day on the farm but they still have plenty of time to talk and help with anything needed, they gave us a lot of there time showing me and my family around there farm and all there animals including horses, cows, chickens, ducks, etc which was fantastic. The cottage is great with everythink you need for a great stay for anyone. Thank you so much.

  • Zan's place is perfectly located for anyone wanting to explore the beauty of Dumfries and Galloway while being able to retreat to a quiet and relaxing rural home. With numerous 7 Stanes sites on the door step it was a great central place for us. Zan has a bike shed for safe storage too! The cheese house is spotlessly clean and has everything you need for a longer stay. Thanks for the stay and the eggs!

After being introduced to Glebe Cottage back in 2013 we knew we just had to buy it. We had always aspired to run our own business since we moved to Moniaive in 2007. We saw this as our chance and pounced, the paperwork was signed and the journey began. The vision was to create a one bedroom retreat exclusively for couples. The worn out stable in the grounds would be the project. After 12 months, many set backs and struggles Wee Glebe was born. We invite you to come and stay and enjoy.
Wee Glebe offers its own private walled garden overlooking the Glencairn valley. Outstanding panoramic veiws from the hot tub not to be missed.
Glebe Cottage sits just off the A713 in a secluded elevated position in the hamlet of Kirkland 2 miles from the village of Moniaive. The A713 was the route Rabbie Burns would of taken when he travelled from Ayr to Dumfries. The views from the hot tub are stunning by day or night and is surrounded by wildlife and natural beauty.
  • Such a cosy, quiet, and stylish venue. The view from the hot tub is lovely.

    Carla2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • You will not be disappointed!! What a fantastic cottage and facilities!! 10/10!!

    L2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • The place is great - I don’t think I could come up with anything else that you could add that would make Wee Glebe better than it is. The Prosecco is a very nice thoughtful touch. The lighting and shelter around the the tub were great and it meant we could be sheltered from the wind and still have the lights off to stargaze (highly recommend turning the lights off on a clear night). We also went for a hike around the striding arches which was great and only a short drive from the cottage. The amenities in Moniaive are all you need for a short stay. Would definitely stay again!

    Greig2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful location and attentive host. Would definitely return for a second time for relaxing little break.

    Yvonne2020-01-11T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at the Wee Glebe as part of our Honeymoon tour of Scotland. We loved our stay there... from the welcome bottle of fizz, to the starry nights in the hot tub and the cracking meal in Moniaive it was the perfect couple of days stop before a trip up to the highlands for xmas..... we highly recommend this place

    Becky2019-12-24T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely place to stay, very comfy and warm, everything that you need is available and of high quality, loved having Netflix as well, the hotub was amazing! Very romantic views and really quiet, every little detail has been thought of! We managed to get a clear night and the sky was amazing! I cannot fault the place! So tucked away and hidden! Mark was very friendly and was always available should we need anything which we really didn't! The place was absolutely spotless! I enjoyed a very relaxing holiday and felt at home straight away, just one tip if you are not used to flagstone floor make sure you bring some slippers I was glad I did! There is even a comfy blanket in the closet!

    Hoda2019-11-30T00:00:00Z

  • What a true hidden gem! A gorgeous location, set amongst the rolling hills and farmland of rural Dumfries and Galloway. Only 20 minutes from Dumfries and 5 minutes away takes you to the village of Monaive that boasts two pubs and an Italian restaurant. We had no problem in finding the farm and were greeted by a smiling Erica and the two pet goats named Octavious and Suki! The accomodation itself is delightful, with a true rustic farmhouse cottage feel, with the furniture, paintings etc to suit. Everything was spotless and of high quality. Both bedrooms were large and very quirky, one having a kingsize bed and the other room with twin beds. Erica provided a fabulous welcome pack that included fresh eggs, fresh fruit, milk, tea, coffee, orange juice, jam etc. The bathroom offered the finest of Neal's Yard cosmetics, soaps, shower gel etc, and the shower was great. Be sure to check out the farmyard and see the wonderful array of rescue animals including goats, horses, donkeys and pigs! We (two adults, two kids and the Spoodle) had such a lovely time and can't wait to return again!

If you like - wild swimming, open fires, castles, hill-walking from the door, barbecues, garden next to a river, dark skies and astounding stars, Robert Burns, the sound of running water, biking, wood fired range and terrific kitchen, down -duvets, giant bathtubs, books and more books, maps, views, red squirrels, a ducal palace, otters, deep sofas. no TV, (but a DVD screen for films by the fire) all from a 1745 centrally heated stone house - then you will like this house very much.
The Shinnel river runs around the garden. The house has two lovely sitting rooms, comfortable sofas, stone flagged hall, thick curtains, a library of books, 2 open fires (dry firewood provided) and a wood burning Esse range in a traditional kitchen - that is also equipped with convection oven, microwave, induction hob etc. and fine cookware. The house has full central heating, with good quality bedding and feather and down duvets. There is a barbecue, outdoor furniture, swimming in the river and lots to do in the area. The three large double bedrooms and a Scottish 'box bed' & all the rooms have views to the hills and over the river.
Bike to Drumlanrig Castle estate, Thornhill and Moniaive - both with shops and pubs and restaurants; closest railway stations at Sanquhar and Dumfries. This is a very pretty and traditional part of Scotland, with hills all around to walk in and explore. There are many local activities to enjoy, including art, music and book festivals, and important historic houses, castles and monuments. The Buccleuch & Queensberry hotel has an excellent restaurant, and in the house log book you will find many more recommendations. The local grocery shops in Thornhil are open every day and you can therefore stock up on supplies on arrival. Tesco will deliver into the glen.
  • The Old School House is a perfect place to disconnect, unwind and relax. Well equipped, wonderfully clean, and cosy, the house was the perfect location to see in the new year! Plenty of opportunities to reconnect with nature, hiking from the front door, a stream running just behind the house for wild swimming, and lots of trails for mountain biking. The big fire place and wood-burning stove were great to come back to in the evenings. Communication with Rachel was easy and fast - looking forward to coming back soon!

  • Rachel's house was a perfect setting for a reunion of 4 friends. The location is stunning. The garden with the river running through was beautiful, and the cosy living room with its log fire a great way to spend our evenings.

    Lorna2019-10-28T00:00:00Z
  • Everything I thought it would be and more. A little piece of paradise - a therapeutic, back to nature, escape from it all. Just wonderful.

    Claire2019-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely stay at Rachel's home. The house is full of character, charm and history. Amazing library and original features. It was an ideal place for our extended family to meet and spend quality time together. The location is beautiful and there are plenty of walks to do in the area.

    Josie2019-08-19T00:00:00Z
  • It is an amazing place! The house is calm, clean and well furnished. We enjoyed fireplace life and cooking with the stove using wirewood even though IH cooking heater is there. The house has a large yard where our kids enjoyed running around and enjoyed campfire. There is nothing around the house. But you can buy foods in Thornhill at 15 min. by car and you can eat delicious lunch/dinner at Buccleuch & Queensberry hotel in Thornhill.

    Osamu2019-08-12T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful house in a tranquil setting. Was perfect for our family plus grandparents in the annex (slightly separates so they had a bit of peace). Loved the sound of the river and sitting out in the shelter watching the river flow by. Beautifully furnished with everything we needed.

    Alison2019-08-08T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful house, perfect setting. A place to relax in and enjoy. Whatever the weather.

    Michael2019-07-30T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely stay in Rachel’s beautiful home and enjoyed the surrounding grounds. The kids had a great time, particularly in the novelty bed. We loved all of the interesting books, the games and the personal bits and pieces that make the house so homely. We also had a nice Sunday lunch at a local hotel which was recommended in the guest book.

  • Great location, fantastic home and even better hosts. We had a brilliant week in Ali and Jocks lovely cottage and we are looking forward to returning in the future!

    James2018-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • Dairy Cottage is incredibly well equipped and luxuriously furnished in a quiet location. Beds were very comfy and linen and towels were freshly washed. Kitchen had everything you'd need. Bathrooms were both very plush with rainfall showers and the largest having an amazing tub. The closest town, Thornhill, is a 10min drive away. Ali was very communicative and made sure we settled in on the first night and gave us tips on nearby things to do, see and places to eat. There were also clear instructions for all the appliances. Dogs are allowed, just not in the bedrooms which is perfectly reasonable. Would highly recommend a stay here.

    Jim2018-06-18T00:00:00Z
  • This cottage and it's location have to be seen to be truly appreciated, no amount of pictures can do justice to the rolling Dumfries countryside or the fantastically appointed cottage. Probably the nicest place we've stayed. Ali and Jock are lovely people and their passion for the cottages and their landscape rightly shines through. A quick word on how dog friendly the cottage is too; Debbie the dog loved it, treats, blankets, drinking bowl and poo bags provided. Will definitely return.

    Chris & Jackie2018-06-01T00:00:00Z
  • Wow, what can we say? We had such a wonderful week here and didn’t want to come home! Dairy Cottage has been done up to a really high standard which makes it feel really inviting and luxurious. The kitchen has got everything you’d need, with a stunning view too! We’ve loved eating out on the patio seating looking out to the wandering sheep and listening to the birds in the trees. It’s set in a beautiful location with the A76 close to get to for travelling out to local day trip destinations. Ali is really lovely- so friendly and really helpful (even arriving to save the day with a tic remover for our youngest daughter). We’ve stayed in lots of cottages in the past and this is the best we’ve been to and would love to come back soon!

    Jack2018-05-20T00:00:00Z
  • Ali's place is located an easy 12 miles north of Dumfries on a quiet single track lane adjacent to working farms. It has wonderful views across the Nith valley to the rolling hills beyond. It's a very tranquil spot. Dairy Cottage, being recently converted, has all mod cons and is really comfortable. The pressurised water system was a real treat, it felt very indulgent showering under huge shower roses. Needless to say extra showers were the order the day! Ali and Jock were great hosts, they popped around to see if everything was okay, then stayed on for a cuppa and chat. It was great to hear about the dairy conversion and their obvious enthusiasm for the property and the area shone through. Thornhill is close by and convenient for basic grocery shopping, Dumfries for a bigger shop if you need it. While here we visited the Multiverse at Crawick and recommend it. Kilnford Farm Shop in Dumfries was a good find for lunch & provisions. An excellent place to stay for Dumfries & surrounds.

    Graeme2018-05-07T00:00:00Z
  • You will not be disappointed with this utterly stunning cottage. It is in an idilic location and has every possible amenity you require for a relaxing stay. The bath is luxurious as is the full cottage. From under floor heating to a cosy large fireplace. This cottage is without a doubt the best place we have stayed in compared to at least 30 other cottages we have stayed in over the years. Ali and Jock were friendly and approchable, nothing was too much trouble. We shall be back again for sure.

This rustic barn accommodation is situated in the heart of Dumfries and galloway, and has everything you need to relax, unwind and escape from it all. The bothy offers a back to basics style of living, but is fully fitted out with luxurious finishes and fittings to make you feel right at home. PLEASE READ THE FULL DESCRIPTION BEFORE BOOKING
Bothies are traditionally a basic form of shelter used by shepherds to shelter from the elements whilst tending to their flock. Our bothy situated on a working sheep small holding, offers guests a back to basics form of accommodation, without compromising on comfort. The accommodation is open plan, and split over two floors. On the ground floor we have a small kitchenette, (small but has everything you need!) wood burning oven, and plenty of space to relax and unwind. Please note the bothy has just cold running water (kettle is provided). As you go up the stairs to the upper floor you'll be greeted by outstanding views across the Nith valley. The sleeping arrangements are up here and consist of a unbelievably comfy king size bed, two equally comfortable single beds and a sofa bed. Goose down duvets, and hotel standard mattresses await you, and ensure you get the perfect nights sleep. NB. Sleeping arrangements are open plan! Breakfast packages are available on request, and will be charged at an additional cost. Toilet and a wonderfully hot coin operated shower are across from the bothy in a separate out house, again they are very well appointed, yet full of rustic charm. The field opposite the bothy is also open for camping, and makes up part of the Open Gate Campsite, a relaxed and welcoming place, so if you're looking to bring a larger group just feel free to get in touch. Bothy guests are more than welcome to use the camping field for BBQ's and sunbathing if you wish. The bothy sits on a working farm steading, and whilst we do our best to keep the peace and tranquility, we have to warn people that there is a chance that there may be sheep wandering, geese honking and tractors going about the place. The steading is a fantastic traditional 18th century farm, which was taken over by us 3 years ago, it was in desperate need of renovation when we got it and whilst we are getting through our long list of jobs there are still rough and wild parts of the farm that can either be explored or avoided!!
Auldgirth is just off the A76, so very convenient to get to all the local attractions, and the nearest pub (The Auldgirth Inn) is a three minute walk away, and comes highly recommended. We’re in close proximity to three of the seven Staines, and Drumlanrig castle so we offer a perfect base if mountain biking’s your thing.
  • Terrific bothy. Highly recommended

Guests are welcome to borrow our Ordnance Survey maps to plan their own route, or alternatively there are cycle trails nearby including the Kirkpatrick Macmillan trail. Dumfries is ten miles away where there is a 24 hour Tesco, an M&S, Morrisons, Aldi and Lidl.

    Jo2020-01-27T00:00:00Z
  • Great for kids and families. Tons of space and the Belted Galloway cows are right next door to look at. Highly recommended.

  • Brilliant place!!!! Can't rate it highly enough.

  • Our 2 year old loved feeding grass to the horses and scraps to the chickens. Zan was very friendly whenever she saw us out and about with the micro-man exploring.

    Kevin2019-09-10T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely cottage with plenty of space for the family. The kids loved the upstairs area with their 'private' lounge and bathroom. The farm was great, we all loved seeing the horses in particular. There were lots of small touches which made life easy so we didn't have to dash out to the shops e.g. bin bags, washing up liquid, shower gel etc which some places don't provide. Zan was very friendly and helpful. Wish we'd stayed longer!

    Paul2019-08-28T00:00:00Z
  • Recently stayed at this property, extremely happy with our stay, very friendly owners. Lovely property, beautiful views, nice and secluded, brilliant for dog owners and walkers. Our grandchildren loved it here, running in and out of the stream on the property and seeing the lamb, horses, chicken and ducks. Couldn’t fault it, would definitely stay again and recommend.

    Stephen2019-08-19T00:00:00Z
  • A great place for a family break. Clean, tidy, loads of space and Zan and family were very welcoming. The kids loved all the animals and the surroundings were fabulous. If you’re wanting a get-away break in the area, you won’t go far wrong here.

The Garden Studio has one bedroom with a double bed, a fully fitted kitchen with electric oven and hob, fridge, microwave oven and washer/dryer. The sitting room has a TV, radio, and free wifi. The bathroom has a walk-in shower.
The apartment has its own separate front door plus plenty of room for parking (for free) and is on the second floor of an early Victorian mansion. It sits in a beautiful three acre garden which guests are welcome to explore. The property is surrounded by fields and hills and is only 2 miles from Moniaive which has shops, restaurants and a petrol station.
The Garden Studio is under two miles from the village of Moniaive, which has a general store, a Post Office, an Italian restaurant, a cafe and two pubs (one of which serves food).
  • Our second stay at the Garden Studio was just as lovely as the first! The Studio is cosy, sparkling clean, spacious and comfortable. Check in is straightforward and Kate is very welcoming. The location is great if you want a peaceful getaway with access to beautiful countryside and charming little towns. Moniaive which is about a mile away has a fabulous Italian restaurant and a good cafe. We will definitely be back!

    Liz2019-10-31T00:00:00Z
  • I wish we could have stayed longer! The Garden Studio is one of the most pleasant stays I’ve ever had. We arrived very late after a long journey to Kate’s welcome and understanding; next time we hope to enjoy the garden even more over the course of a few days. Couldn’t recommend the studio more!

    Tracy2018-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • To stay here is a gardeners delight! The room is like an addition to a stately home complete with beautiful gardens and landscape. The rooms are like new: comfortable bed, fluffy towels and a seperate room where you can read or watch TV. Be sure to bring in your own breakfast food because there isn’t much there and no grocery or cafe within walking distance.

Nestling in the hamlet of Kirkpatrick, 10 miles North of Dumfries just off the A76. It is comfortably furnished with a wood burning stove in the sittingroom and a rustic hand built bar in the corner. With lovely views out over the lowther hills.
This is a lovely country cottage, with full central heating and a wood burning stove in the sittingroom. It has a rustic hand built bar full of books, games, jigsaws and a wine glass or two. French windows open out onto a large patio with beautiful landscaped garden. There is a large kitchen diner with views out over the lowther hills. A smaller patio area to the rear is a right little suntrap. There are two very spacious bedrooms, one double and one family, and a modern bathroom with large walk in shower. Within 10 minutes of the cottage you can golf, horseride, fish, swim, bike, walk or shop, yet it is most definitely a country cottage.
Oakbank Farm Cottage is a 19th century stone built cottage, recently refurbished to bring it into the 21st century. One of five cottages forming the hamlet of kirkpatrick. With beautiful country walks on your doorstep, but just 10 miles from the thriving market town of Dumfries. Drumlanrig Castle only 4 miles away, boasts amazing gardens, country walks, mountain biking and the chance to walk through a 17th century castle with all its amazing painting, tapestrys and history. Loch ettrick is just a 5 minute drive away, with its quaint little boathouse its a must. We have red squirrels, kites, deer, otters and much more.

We have two private suites, each suite is centrally heated and is equipped with a television, fridge, and kettle with the bonus of free wi-fi. Our wish is for our guests to have a relaxing and restful stay in a quiet, traffic-free environment. Pets are welcome in The Stables Accommodation. A level car park is situated beside the property, with disabled access, leading off to the suites.
Comfortable, warm and cosy, each individual suite sleeps 4, has a bedroom with two single beds and a separate lounge with a double sofa bed. Bed linen and towels are provided with a travel cot can be arranged. A large practical yet appealing wet room is beautifully appointed with a non-slip cushioned floor. Being hazard-free, this area permits pleasingly safe showering for disabled people and those less steady on their feet. Beside each suite is a small patio area and depending on the season, guests can enjoy the changing landscape of the wooded area behind the property as snowdrops give way to daffodils before bluebells make a gloriously colourful carpet. We have a maid service that attends to the suites on a daily basis to ensure they are kept spotlessly clean. It is the attention to detail that we take pride in to ensure our guests have a most pleasant stay with us.
Fishers The River Nith flows past our front door and we can arrange fishing packages on some of the river’s finest stretches through our partners in the area. Cyclists Kirkpatrick Macmillan, inventor of the bicycle was born at Keir (five miles) and the KM Trail runs between Dumfries and Drumlanrig Castle. There are other designated road cycling routes in the area and of course a huge network of country roads all around. Mountain Bikers The famous 7 Stanes Mabie Forest with its selection of trails and loops for beginners to experts is within a 30-minute drive. Bikes can be hired there. The Ae Valley Route is just a few miles away and is ideal for beginners. Lovely viewpoints, picnic areas, rivers and rocks feature along the way. Also nearby is Drumlanrig Castle where various trails have been created to challenge all levels. Golfers Several parkland courses are within a few miles with the championship links of Southerness (22 miles) being a little farther afield along the scenic Solway Coast route. Robert Burns Dumfries has many connections with the poet where he spent his final days. He farmed at Ellisland about three miles away and regularly visited the nearby Friars Carse. Walkers With county trails and roads all around there is no shortage of enjoyable walks. Notable is the walks from Drumlanrig to Burnmouth, a distance of around 12 miles that will take four hours. more strenuous is to the Striding Arches that were created by local artist Andy Goldsworthy, which starts at Cairnhead Forest. Visitors Whether you are coming to the area for a wedding, family reunion, celebration or simply to unwind, relax and enjoy this part of Scotland we are sure you will find the Stables Accommodation wholly agreeable with your needs.
  • Enjoyed our night at the stables with our dog, Iggy. Great location to walk the hill behind for good views, also river and park walks. Auldgirth Inn is very nice and next door to stables however dogs allowed in outside area only. Helen met us personally with the key and some coffee, milk extras.

    Dawn2019-08-31T00:00:00Z
  • Very good clean cottage close to pub with outdoor areas for dogs

    Neil2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • The apartment is quiet and very clean. The check in was super easy as Helen walked over to hand me the keys. It was a perfect location for me during my retreat week at a nearby Sanctuary. There is a pub/restaurant right next door which made for a great dinning experience. The apartment is designed for wheel chair accessibility so that is a great plus should you need this set up. Thank you Helen.

Newton Farmhouse is a recently renovated property in the heart of the small village of Gatelawbridge, near Thornhill. This spacious property benefits from stunning views, nearby countryside walks, close by family-friendly activities, access to local amenities and restaurants. My place is good for families (with kids), big groups, and furry friends (pets). Private parking and patio/garden.
  • We were 2 families celebrating New Year together. We were looking for peace and quiet to relax and chill together which we certainly found at Annabel's cottage. We had our dog with us and he loved it too. The kitchen was well equipped and there was plenty space for everyone to relax, play games and watch the tv in. Lovely and clean when we arrived and we would recommend this accommodation.

Room 7 is one of our classic rooms at Trigony with a king size bed and an ensuite fit with shower and bath. The view from room 7 looks to the West over the Kier Hills.
Trigony is a beautiful 18th Century house that was once part of the Closeburn Castle estate. It was then refurbished in the Arts and Crafts style of the 1930's much of which remains in the decor and furniture including original William Morris wallpaper. Here at Trigony, we prioritise your comfort and care with a relaxed atmosphere and friendly, local staff. We are a family run business with our owners Adam and Jan at the centre of the daily runnings of the hotel. Our beds are incredibly comfortable but if you must drag yourself away from them, we have delicious hot breakfasts made to order for you waiting downstairs in our bar and dining room served between 8am and 11am. If you have dogs (like we do!), they are also most welcome to eat alongside you in the bar and be set up for the night in your room. Treats await them on arrival. Explore the local countryside at any time of year with our own local walking guide, or visit one of the amazing local castles or gardens. Ask any member of staff for recommendations - we are incredibly happy to help and as members of the local community, we know the best hidden spots. If you'd like to indulge further, we offer treatments, therapies and use of our sauna and hot tub with gorgeous tranquil views of the adjacent Kier Hills. Our resident alchemist Richard can whip you up a delicious cocktail - have a look over our drinks menu or ask for something special.
Some amazing countryside awaits to be explored, from the cliff top paths of the Solway Coast to the rolling hills of the Southern uplands, as well as lovely picturesque villages with their own unique characters. Pony trekking is popular amongst our guests at Camplebridge Riding School, less than 100m away on the A76! We recommend a trip into neighbouring Thornhill for lunch at Thomas Tosh or a wander around the small but beautiful modern art gallery at Cample Line. We are also situated not too far from Drumlanrig Castle which is worth visiting for its impressive history, art collection and picturesque estate lands - mountain bike enthusiasts this is one for you.

  • I stayed for three weeks in Smithy's Cottage and loved every moment! It was such a cute cottage, full of character and with everything provided for a comfortable stay. The surrounding countryside was beautiful and there were so many places to see nearby- it was the perfect place to stay for my first taste of Scotland :) Make sure you check out the range of local crafts and the library with tons of books for a donation at The Hive in Moniaive - all run by local volunteers and the cafe Thomas Tosh in Thornhill makes some amazing cakes! The visitor information Centre in Dumfries gave me lots of information on pkaces of interest. Thanks for a wonderful stay Jackie and Grant! :)

  • A delightful cottage with loads of personality. We unanimously agreed it was lovely, and the 22 and 24 year-olds particularly enjoyed the record collection and we all felt iur two-night visit was not enough to do the dvds and records justice. Prompt and careful communication, and attention to detail.

    Cathy2019-07-27T00:00:00Z
  • Loved being at Jackie's place, it is right in the countryside, the garden is fantastic, the cottage has everything you would need, will come again. I did have some issue's outside of the owners control, but there were swift dealt with, and this means a lot. Will I back yes for sure.

    Rocco2019-07-24T00:00:00Z
  • What can I say! Smithy cottage, sunshine, an amazing garden, a short drive to town, books, games and dvds galore and a comfortable old fashioned cottage. We loved it. There was enough of everything for us all to have a great time. Just a beautiful place really.

    Sharon2019-07-15T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay at Jackie’s cottage. Excellent communication throughout. Very homely and had everything we needed. We especially loved the beautiful enclosed garden (safe for dogs) and great walks on your doorstep. We also loved the surprise bottle of wine. DVD collection was fantastic too for the one rainy day we had. This was my first visit to Dumfries and Galloway, great first impression! Perfect for a quiet relaxing break

    Eileen2019-05-27T00:00:00Z
  • Jackie & Grant’s Place was just perfect for us. It’s super quirky with lots of character; there’s a great record collection, dvds & fabulous selection of books. Lovely garden out the back. Kitchen has everything you need & once the heating is on, it’s super cosy. This part of D&G is very pretty & we’d have loved to have stayed longer.

    Laura2019-05-06T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful location and a really quaint cottage. Jackie is a brilliant host. Really recommend this cottage and location.

    Rosemary2019-05-03T00:00:00Z
  • This is a very well equipped home which will meet your every whim! Lots of music, film, books, pictures, all thoughtfully chosen. The kitchen has so much equipment you'll be able to do anything you want, if you can find it! It's a very nice easy layout of kitchen, dining room and sitting area where lots of things can go on at once. You need to go to Dumfries for comprehensive food shopping but that's very easy. Lovely signed walks are easy and everywhere. Your dog will love it.

This beautiful rustic single storey traditional 19th century cottage, built from local pink sandstone, was bought by my father in 1986. I've been going there since I was 7 years old. It's in an isolated tranquil location with beautiful views of the Lowther Hills, and a ruined castle and loch a 10 minute walk away. Great area for walking, cycling, fishing, bird watching etc. Open fire, traditional free-standing bath, and one bedroom has ensuite toilet and shower.. Everyone is welcome!
The cottage sleeps 6, in 3 double bedrooms. One of the bedrooms has an ensuite shower and toilet. Please note that this bedroom can only be accessed through one of the other bedrooms. Please see photos for a floorplan. The main bedroom has a superkingsize bed.
Absolutely spectacularly beautiful area. You can walk into the hills and forests straight from the cottage, and to a ruined castle and loch. Lovey beaches are within a 40 minute drive. You can also drive in the other direction further into the hills, and go gold panning in the river. Drumlanrig Castle is a short drive (or a walk) away.
  • Jack is a great host - his description of the cottage was very accurate and although we knew it is not four star there is everything you need !!! Its super cosy and relaxing - get the fire lit as soon as you arrive to add to the atmosphere. It’s in a remote area though only a short drive from Thornhill which has everything you need including a chocolatier !!! There are some fantastic walks from the cottage and the castle is worth checking out ! What’s so appealing is just how quiet it is - we left refreshed and chilled and with heavy hearts !!

  • House is located in a beautiful location. Plenty of peace, space and nature. This is still a real piece of Scotland without a lot of tourism. Everything was present in the home, wonderful beds. occasionally we have missed a nice garden set. Picnic bench is present! We certainly hope to come back again.

  • What a location! Amazing. The greatest compliment I can give is that we’ll definitely be back. Loved it. Though my understanding is that the 4 days in a row on sunshine that we had in Dumfries was unusual! Great place.

  • Special little place. Simple but in such a fab location and lots of space. Went up with a few mates and spent days walking and checking out Drumlanrig Castle and evenings by the fire playing games! Awesome!

  • Jacks cottage is a beautiful old building with tons of character. Off the beaten track, this cottage will suit those who like a bit of peace and quiet, some dark-sky star-gazing, and the homeliness of an open fire. We can't wait to visit again!
