A log cabin cottage with a wood-burning stove in 2 acres of gardens, private hot tub, a tennis court and BBQ area. The cottage has one bedroom with a double bed and en-suite and one open plan area with kitchen / diner and TV lounge. We do have a SKY TV box in the cottage for freeview channels only, as well as a Blu Ray Player with a number of DVD's. Unfortunately, the internet speeds we get are very slow so if you need it to check emails or social media it will be fine. Fully equipped.
This is a log cabin cottage set behind our 18th century converted windmill, in our private gardens and very children friendly. There is a tennis court, a BBQ area and a children's play area. Please bear in mind, this is a log cabin in the garden which spiders love so even though we will do our best to get all the spider webs, you may still see the odd one; believe us when we say they spring overnight! If you love the outdoors, your tennis and don't mind our eight legged friends, then this is your place. Please also note that the internet speeds in the area are very slow. We provide you with our wifi code, and our speed is sufficient to download emails and social media browsing but not sure you will be able to stream large files or movies, which is why we have added a sky box with freeview channels and a blu ray player.
We are incredibly close to Preston and Southport centre / beach (only 15 minute drive each), 40 minutes from Bolton and 45 minutes from Liverpool and Manchester. Bretherton is a lovely village with a lovely village bakery and some lovely walks.
  • Elpi was very welcoming and the neighborhood is quiet and peaceful.

    Yassin2015-09-14T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing host! Elpi welcomed us even though we were much earlier than expected. The cottage was awesome and felt roomy even though 8 of us stayed. Everything we could want was available and there was a shop a short drive away. Elpi even provided milk, tea and coffee for us. Clean and tidy with a nice comfy bed! Great comms before and after leaving.

    Louis2016-06-20T00:00:00Z
  • Thank you for an amazing stay me and my partner really enjoyed the cottage and let's not forget the hot tub.. The fact it was on its own in a great location was better so we could really enjoy the weekend together. Would highly recommend it to anyone who is after a nice quite weekend away.

    Jamie2017-08-13T00:00:00Z
  • Elpi was v welcoming when we arrived and the grounds of the cottage are very pretty. The cottage itself is extremely basic but serviceable, there weren't window coverings at all the windows and Elpi explained that a high hedge covered most of them, however it was very bright in the room with the 2 sofa beds each morning. This was raised on arrival at the cottage, but unfortunate timing meant Elpi was away a couple of times in the week we were there, and although she was keen to address one of the windows later in the week there were only a couple of nights remaining so it wasn't really worth it.

    Lucy2016-06-06T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful stay in Bretherton in a clean and quiet environment out of town and Elpi was a great host. We forgot to bring a hairdryer and she even went and bought one. Would highly recommend.

    Christopher2017-04-02T00:00:00Z
  • When we arrived, Elpi wasn't there but one of the staff from the Spa right next door was there and was expecting us. They were friendly and gave us access to the cottage and some information about where things were in the surrounding area. When Elpi arrived later we had a nice chat and she was able to give us some good recommendations for eating out and activities nearby with our Son. The cottage was very clean and tidy and the bed was very comfortable. We very much enjoyed our stay and will probably book again if we are returning to the area.

    Duncan2015-10-26T00:00:00Z
  • Had a brilliant stay here. Elpi was a great host. The accommodation was perfect for my families needs. Ideally situated within easy reach of Southport, Liverpool and Blackpool - perfect family weekend.

  • A comfortable two night stay in an excellent location. Eli was very welcoming and particularly helpful beforehand as I had not used Airbnb and was not sure what I should be expecting in terms of towels/bed linen etc.

The Shippon at Hoscar Hall Farm in Lancashire offers self-catering accommodation and has been awarded 4 Stars by The Visit England Quality In Tourism scheme. Situated in rural Lancashire and yet only 10 minutes from Junction 27 of the M6, The Shippon is the perfect base from which to enjoy the countryside and yet still be close to the coast, market towns, cities and other attractions. The accommodation, a renovated barn, sleeps up to four people and has been decorated to a high standard.
  • Nice touches, welcome bits and amazing homemade cake! Excellent!

    Ian2017-11-12T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic host, great place which was spotlessly clean, in a good location and came with best Lemmon drizzle cake I’ve had. Highly recommend

    Gareth2017-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • Really enjoyed our short stay. The Shippon was perfect and everything as described. The place was lovely and clean and a friendly welcome by Pam. The homemade cake was a lovely touch. Many thanks.

    Jonathan2016-10-29T00:00:00Z
  • Needed a base near to Edge Hill University for an event. Great personal touches from the host. Comfortable and cosy living space in a nice quiet rural area. First time using air bnb but did not disappoint. Beats a hotel room any day!

    Steven 2017-11-27T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great time in this lovely cottage. It has been very well maintained, is high quality and very clean. The garden is lovely and even better than in the photo. You would probably want a car, but there are some lovely pubs nearby, next to the canal. Pam was extremely friendly and accommodating.

    Casey2016-08-30T00:00:00Z
  • From Grand Designs to Property Ladder, via countless other property programmes, The Barn Conversion is a well-known theme. The Shippon is a barn conversion and the result is as cosy and comfortable as it is pleasing to the eye. Pam and her husband have done it proud! Inside, Pam had provided some essential groceries. On its own, this was a nice gesture, but the icing on the cake was - well, a cake! Yes, Pam had baked us a cake! It was a Victoria Sponge and it was DELICIOUS! We ended up with a difficult problem to solve at the end of our stay - the comfort of The Shippon made it a very difficult place to leave. Only visiting friends and family elsewhere in the British Isles could winkle us out! But that (URL HIDDEN) we decided to take Pam with us!! Ok, we didn't, but it was a close call. The Shippon - you'll LOVE it. Hoscar is a great location for exploring. There are some great pubs in the immediate area. The Leeds-Liverpool canal passes near here and is great for walking along. Rufford Hall (1530) is not far from Hoscar and the canal runs close to it. Historic Ormskirk is close by and Southport and Liverpool are within easy reach. Picturesque villages abound. Lancashire abounds with mysterious places; you may have heard of the Pendle witches! But there are plenty of other places of mystery, intrigue and interest, from the Stone Age to the present day. Fill yer boots!! If you're going into Liverpool - 3 cathedrals (Roman Catholic, Anglican and The Cavern (ask your granny!!) - drive to somewhere on the Liverpool-Southport electric railway, park in a station and get the train. Parking in most cities is a nightmare! In the case of Liverpool, if you drive to Blundellsands and Crosby, go to the beach there and ponder "Another Place" - 100 life-sized cast iron statues of their creator, Antony Gormley. He also created The Angel of the North, near Gateshead. Hoscar is only about four miles from the M6 motorway, making The Lake District, The Yorkshire Dales, The Peak District and even North Wales only an hour and a half's drive away - well maybe a bit longer to Caernarvon or Holyhead, but still, eminently reachable. If you're into etymology, the name, "Shippon" means a cow shed. Don't let that put you off. It was what it was. The name is Germanic in origin and comes to us from Old English: "Scypen". To reiterate, The Shippon is a lovely place to be, whether you venture out of it, or not! Pam, the owner, is a delightful host and just the best Victoria Sponge baker this side of The Van Allen Belts(URL HIDDEN)

  • We had a wonderful stay at the Shippon. We arrived to a warm, cosy, very clean place. Pam the host is excellent. Very friendly and gave good local info and knowledge. Also makes great lemon drizzle cake. The Shippon is very well equipped. Good parking and very pretty garden. Very homely. We will definitely like to have a return visit. Would thoroughly recommend a stay. From Lisa, Michael and Gabriel.

  • This is an upside down property with bedrooms on the ground floor each of which opens onto a very large garden, which incorporates a putting green. Bev was extremely welcoming and helpful and her dog, Darcey kept our puppy company throughout the 4 day stay. The first floor comprises a large, comfortable living area and a very well equipped kitchen. Overall a very enjoyable stay and good value too.

    Ray2017-07-24T00:00:00Z
  • Really lovely place to stay for friends and dogs. It is charming, quirky and has all mod cons. Excellent walks, eateries and places of interest to visit nearby. Extremely hospitable owner on site nearby to help if needed. A place to chill out and have fun.

    Helen2017-04-01T00:00:00Z
  • The Owls is a lovely place in a great setting. The hostess, Bev was very welcoming and helpful. I would like to come back in the summer to make more use of the outside area by the pond, but we did make good use of the balcony which had some shelter from the rain, as well as a beautiful view of the countryside and some lovely hanging baskets which made it very special.

    Frances2017-09-11T00:00:00Z
  • On arrival we were met by the lovely Bev. Straight away we were made to feel so welcome and at ease. Everything was clean and in lovely condition. Towels and bedding were also provided which really helped. The house is in a stunning location and proved to be such a social house - everything centres around the kitchen which is exactly what we were after! This place was everything we wanted and more. If we are ever up that way again, we know where we'll be staying! The under floor heating was a nice surprise too ;) You won't be disappointed, we already want to go back. Thanks again for your kind hospitality Bev x

    Fiona2017-08-28T00:00:00Z
  • The house was lovely- clean, well equipped and full of character. I loved sitting on the balcony with a coffee in the morning, even in October it was a sheltered spot to watch the birds and listen to the cows across the way. Bev went out of her way to make us feel welcome during the week with flowers and apples from the garden and even a birthday card. My dog loved meeting her dogs who were very friendly, and was she was also made welcome in the house and garden. The upside-down layout of the house works well- I did have to carry my dog down the stairs to begin with as she's old and stiff and couldn't get a grip on the wooden stairs at first. (My dad who is also a bit old and stiff had no problems!) I had checked in advance that it was OK to have friends over during our stay, and they were equally made welcome. There was loads of space and ample crockery etc to cook a birthday meal in the well-equipped kitchen. We'd definitely love to come again. Thank you!

  • This is a gorgeous barn. Very much a family home, full of family memories but super comfortable in gentle countryside close to junction 27 of the M6. We loved its comfort and individuality. Everything we needed was provided and there is a good balance between lovely updated kitchen and bathroom facilities along with beautiful old furniture pieces. All very comfortable and we felt the property had a lovely feel to it. We very much intend to return and highly recommend it.

Luxury, 2 bed cottage in an English heritage conservation area. Fantastic views from every window. Newly refurbished to a high end contemporary finish. All the facilities of a modern boutique hotel but with the privacy of your own home with a beautiful garden. Lots of country walks along the most scenic part of the Leeds to liverpool canal, great pubs serving excellent food. All within 5 mins walking distance. If you like quirky, rustic charm this place is for you.
Lathom is a historic area in rural west Lancashire. The country house and its estate go back centuries and have played a key role in ancient battles. The chapel that still stands on the grounds of Lathom house was invaded by Oliver Cromwell. The Bullet holes can still be seen on the chapels altar today. The site goes all the way back to Roman times. Lots of significant archaeological items have been found from digs on the site in the past and more recently.
  • Adrian's place has been beautifully renovated and has inspired us to think about some updates to our cottage in London! Impeccably clean, with lovely soft, fluffy towels, too. Adrian communicated really well with us in the run-up to our stay, and was very flexible with check-in time. He gave us some good tips for local eateries (I can recommend a half-hour stroll down the canal to The Sinners Club, and the Ship Inn is lovely, too). My husband had tickets to the match at Anfield and that was half an hour in a taxi (I imagine it would be much longer for arrival closer to kick-off) so this was the perfect location for our family of four – peaceful and rural, but close enough to where we needed to be. Thanks, Adrian, for a delightful stay.

    Becs2017-08-28T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic stay. Really lovely house, clean, spacious, warm and quiet. Adrian kindly adapted to the fact we arrived later than expected (weekend traffic!) - very accommodating. Hope to stay again in future.

  • Really lovely cottage to spend a stop over from Glasgow to Surrey. Beautifully decorated and comfortable. Loved the Christmas tree which our 1 year old really appreciated. Thanks again

    Leanne2017-12-04T00:00:00Z
  • Adrian & his mum couldn't have been more helpful. We were greeted at the property and shown our way round. Although the property looks amazing in photos I must say it's even better in real life! The decor throughout the whole building is amazing. A modern-retro feel with traditional furnishing executed very well. A brand new kitsch filled fitted kitchen, beautiful teal bathroom with a very cool Burlington cistern above the toilet. I highly recommend this place. I will definitely be staying again!

    Craig2017-08-20T00:00:00Z
  • Adrian's home is stunning! Immaculately clean and beautifully furnished - artistic, unique and very comfortable. Highly recommend to anyone visiting this area and Adrian is excellent at communicating and a very helpful host who went above and beyond the call of duty to accommodate our exceptionally late arrival due to circumstances beyond our control. Much appreciated and would love to return in future.

    Sara Jane2017-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • We have stayed in many Airbnb places and hundreds of hotels all over the world and I have to say, this was possibly one of the best! Adrian's house is chic and modern, with Art Deco furniture (sorry if I'm wrong Adrian; I'm no artist!). The place was immaculate and comfortable! The location is quiet and safe. We found a lovely pub about a ten minute walk called 'The Ship' which was a beautiful country pub next to the canal. All in all, Adrian's place is perfect and we plan to return in December.

    Estelle2017-09-13T00:00:00Z
  • Worth all the money! Well designed, clean, good kitchen and nice bathroom

    Claus 2017-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • Adrian's house is absolutely beautiful. It's finished to a very high standard and is a mixture of old meets new. Very tasteful, very pleasant and bigger than what we were expecting. Adrian's home is a very comfortable space and has everything you need to make your stay enjoyable and memorable. When we arrived it was immaculate. His house is situated next to the canal path which is a lovely walk and there are several lovely pubs in the surrounding area (which is beautiful). If I'm ever across this way again I will definitely be staying.

  • Quiet cul-de-sac and convenient location. Mark was helpful in providing a towel and some milk as I arrived late andvwas staying for one night. Sorry about the oil from the faulty hire car !

    in2015-12-02T00:00:00Z
  • Mark's as cool as a cucumber, totally relaxed and very welcoming. The place is a cosy little pad, nice and clean and has everything you need, good shower, comfy bed, big fridge all spot on. The one slight negative was that there was no toaster but there was a pretty slick grilling machine that made up for it. The location is the real winner, right next to a stunning river stream. The areas very green also can't ask for better if you want a quiet escape to the country and get some fresh air in the lungs. Only a minutes walk from Parbold station. Oh yeah the garden is awesome too, has kayaks, fishing equipment and a somewhat man-made gym. 10/10 will deffo be back for the summer, would recommend to anyone.

  • My wife and I just wanted to say a big thank you to Shan, she did everything that she could to accommodate us and was very friendly, bubbly and helpful whenever we requested anything, be it information or something to make our lives a little easier, Shan always replied promptly and sorted us out. The facilities are great and the location is superb, very private and relaxing, I guarantee anyone who stays here will be very happy and enjoy their time. Thanks again to Shan and her husband Li for everything! Hope to see you again soon :)

This recently refurbished bungalow in WESTHEAD (NOT Ormskirk) is a 5 minute drive from the centre of Ormskirk, as well as being 5 minutes from the M58. It is also on a main bus route, from Wigan to Southport, so transport links are excellent. There are two bedrooms, one for myself, one spare. Bathroom with bath and shower, kitchen, and living/dining room. There is also a front and back garden, garage, and front and rear driveways, so parking is plentiful.
It’s only a small place so its pretty difficult to get lost. There is a living/dining room and your bedroom. In the summer you may want to chill out in the rear garden
Close to a pub, the Prince Albert, where you can get good food and beer. Also on a main bus route from Wigan to Southport, and Skelmersdale to Liverpool. Ormskirk Hospital is literally on the same road, no more than a 5 min drive, likewise Ormskirk town centre is a little further on. Edge Hill uni is also very nearby. Roughly 20 min walk via the back lanes unless you decide to cut through the hospital. There is also a Chinese takeaway near the hospital, a dry cleaning service, an off licence and an award winning butchers.

  • A lovely cosy place to stay with all the mod cons, including a dishwasher. It's clean, tidy and comfortable. The location is quiet and we took a few countryside walks. There is a place to eat next door, however there are other places in the vicinity. We enjoyed our stay and will be back!

  • Derry and family were very friendly. Derry responded very quickly to my request, showed me around his fantastic garden, offered a drink and invited me to watch a film in their home cinema room

    Rob2016-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • Really nice place, the host (Derry) is welcoming and very easy going. It was nice chatting with him and I could see, if we had stayed longer, it'd be nice to hang out with him in his cinema room and his cats. Derry is clearly putting a lot of effort into doing his house up which has a lot of potential (plus the land at the back for walks etc.).

    Phil2016-09-25T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great stay at Derry's house. It was easy to find with close links to the motorway. Derry has a lot of land and we enjoyed a quiet wander through the woods on his property as part of our stay. Derry greeted us warmly and was very welcoming and chatty - even when we arrived an hour early. The house is lovely, warm and cosy - we especially loved the log burner in the main living area. Our room with a king size bed was extremely comfortable and we had a great nights sleep. We didn't get chance to use the cinema room but it looked awesome. We booked very last minute and Derry was easy to contact and nothing was too much trouble. We would stay here again. A lovely quiet countryside retreat but with good links into Liverpool.

    Gail2017-10-29T00:00:00Z
  • Derry made us very welcome to his home in the nice open countryside. Bed was comfortable and bath nice and hot! Love exploring the wood and the back of the property and kid had a great time on the zip wire! Thanks you Derry.

  • I really had a great time at Derry's, it was very quiet and in a great location. He was very accommodating and friendly in general. I would definitely stay at his place again.

  • Derry was very welcoming on my arrival. He showed me around and made sure that I knew where everything was. He was contactable at all times. Unfortunately I was unable to make use of the huge cinema system because I was busy, but it looked impressive. The room was comfortable, warm and clean.

  • Gorgeous cosy accommodation with a very comfortable bed. Very clean and beautifully decorated. Perfect for our short weekend away visiting family nearby. Paula was a great host - quick replies to communication, lovely breakfast available. We had a small issue with the shower that Paula fixed quickly and efficiently. We will definitely stay again!

  • A brilliant find! True gem, private and peaceful. I'd had a 3 hour 45 min car journey turn into a 6 hour + nightmare and was greeted with snacks and drinks - so appreciated. The snug was beautiful and so comfy. We settled right in and felt at home. Wonderful surroundings and woken by a cockrel each morning which was bliss compared to the planes in London. Paula was a great host, let us get on with our time there but also checked to see if we needed anything. Also let us extend our check out which made a huge difference to us - thank you so, so much. Location was great for access to all we needed. The bed was soooooo comfy - need to know where that duvet and mattress came from as I want one!! Would definitely recommend and also stay again if we're back in the area. Thanks Paula and family.

  • We loved staying at Phillip's! The cottage was delightful, homely and very comfortable. Not to mention how welcome the hot tub was on a cold night! Would definitely stay again.

    Vanessa2016-11-28T00:00:00Z
  • We made a mistake by booking into Heathrow, on top of it our flight was late so we didn’t arrive until close to midnight. Philip waited up for us and greeted upon arrival. Philips wife had gone to the trouble of stocking us up for a nice English breakfast when we got up the next morning. The cottage and surroundings were all we had hoped for. Very comfortable bed with choice of nice pillows. Lovely hot and clean shower. Charming cozy cottage with the lovely country get away feeling we were looking forward to. We hope to return!

  • A lovely self contained unit, with well furnished Lounge/Diner/Kitchen and separate bedroom with ensuite. Parking was directly out front and the bedroom leads onto an attractive garden area.

    Neil2017-06-04T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage is small but bigger than it looks in the photos. It is extremely well equipped, we stayed there very comfortably for a whole month. The big plus is the French window from the bedroom opening onto the delightful and extensive gardens. The hot tub is a real bonus, we used it in the evenings and loved lying in it , looking at the stars with no light pollution! The area is rural and very scenic, with lovely canal walks, great pubs, excellent cycling and some really great tea places and farm shops. Phil and Sue are friendly and obliging hosts. We will certainly be going back and would have no hesitation in recommending it.

    Christine2017-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • The Dairy is a lovely detached cottage with parking. The photos do not do this any justice and was really lovely. We had patio doors straight from the bedroom into a gorgeous garden and the hot tub was round the corner. We had a great long weekend and a pub a mile walk up the canal. The hosts were fab!!

A beautiful house nestled in the centre of the historic village of Croston. Built in 1863, this gorgeous retreat is just opposite the village green, which is home to two popular (dog-friendly!) country pubs. There are free car parking places just across the road. The house has all the luxuries you need plus a south facing garden, perfect for soaking up the sun. I have a key box at the front door so you can arrive at any time. Any questions, please ask!
This gorgeous country cottage style dwelling is over 150 years old! With that comes gorgeous period features such as the stunning old street lamp on the front of the house. The house sits in front of the bustling village green and country pub and restaurant, the Wheatsheaf. In fact, there are many places to eat and drink within walking distance. Step out of the back of the house and take a deep breath of fresh air. The peaceful garden gets the sun all day, it's a real sun trap and sheltered from the wind. There's lots of lovely plants and flowers, perfect for a weekend away. The house has two bedrooms both with double beds. There's also a cute little sun room, a perfect area for pets.
The house is very close to lots of amenities, which I've included in my guest book (found online as part of this profile or in a house manual at the house). Walk out of the front door and there is the lovely village green. Just across the road there is: +The Wheatsheaf Pub, which has a bustling outdoor seating area for sunny days. The food is amazing, especially the baked Camembert. They serve breakfast 10am-12pm Saturday and Sunday. +Fresco Fresco, an Italian opposite the house with a restaurant/takeaway. The takeaway pizzas are freshly made in the pizza oven and are amazing. +The Nelson Pub, historical old pub with outdoor seating area. Try the secret hook and ring game, strangely addictive! On Town Road itself you can find: +The Grapes, a country restaurant serving quality food and gorgeous afternoon tea. +Thyme on the Yarrow, very cute cafe serving breakfast and lunch, the pate and cheese sharing platter is really nice. +Panshi, Indian restaurant and takeaway, try the tandoori lamb chops with onion and pepper, amazing! +Royal Bank of Scotland, cash machine just across the road from the house. Within five to ten minutes walk: +Westhead fish and chip shop, the best fish chips and peas for miles arounds, be prepared to queue but well worth the wait. Seating area outside. +Bleu Belle, lovely beauticians for all your pampering needs! +James Alexander Hair Salon, when you fancy a day off from doing a blow dry or just need a trim. +Co-op food, good selection of food basics, also there's a post office service provided at the till.
  • This is such a great find - in the middle of the prettiest village full of flowers, with a river and cobbled bridge, several pubs and restaurants and lovely dog walks locally. Holly's house is absolutely spotless and so tasteful and comfortable. It has everything a family or couple might need and a wonderfully helpful house manual full of tips and info. Such a lovely base for this area - we would love to return in the future!

Small, private room; unique, modern property; clean, tidy & homely; gardens & off road parking; close to Edge Hill Uni. RURAL LOCATION (students best not to book if you want night life, rather than mark me down in your review). Ideal for lecturers & business professionals with own transport (1m from M58/ 10 mins from M6). My location information is 100% accurate, annoyingly Airbnb shows incorrect 'STREET VIEW' on their map. A smoke/child/pet free household. Includes a 'help-yourself' breakfast.
MY HOUSE: My home is in a quiet RURAL area (i.e closest supermarket is 3 miles away), approx. 10 minutes from the M6. However, if you don't have a car, be advised that public transport is virtually non-existent. I am offering the use of a small, light and airy, double-bedded room with adequate storage and hanging space for 2 people. There is a modern kitchen and bathroom: walk in shower (no bath) - towels are provided. A 'help-yourself-breakfast' is included in the price (cereals or toast-tea/coffee etc). Let me know if you have special dietary requirements. 'The Den' is one mile from the M58 (approx. 10 minutes from the M6, junction 26). Located in a small, quiet, cul-de-sac, set in RURAL surroundings. Approx. 2 miles from Edge Hill Uni - accessible by bus (although they are few & far between now, due to government cuts) or taxis (£5.50) NO UBER or a 40-50 minute walk. The historic market town of Ormskirk is 3 miles away. You can catch trains to Liverpool, Manchester, Preston etc. There are buses to the coastal resort of Southport which offers many tourist attractions including the Air Show, Woodvale Rally, Flower Show, Firework Competition, Jazz festival, Comedy Festival, golf competitions and more. If you're driving north, I am only one hour's drive from the South Lakes (Fell Foot, Newby Bridge, Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside etc) exit on M6 - you could be walking in the beautiful Lake District within 2 hours. Please note: I am 45 minute drive away from the centre of Manchester - traffic dependent. AIRPORTS: Manchester is less than an hour away. Liverpool is about 35 - 40 minutes away. All traffic dependent. SPORTING EVENTS: There are MANY sporting events in the area.I have only listed a few that may be of interest. Race go-ers: if you're interested in the horse racing, both Haydock and Aintree are only 20 minutes drive Why not come for the Grand National? You could get there by train in 10 minutes (train station is 5 minutes drive away from my place, you can park on the road by the station for free) or drive there in 15 minutes (traffic dependent, of course!) Football, rugby & cricket fans: Everton, Liverpool, Man U, Man City, Blackburn and Wigan football grounds are all within a 30 - 40 minute drive as is the Old Trafford Cricket Ground, St. Helen's, Wigan, Widnes and Warrington Rugby grounds are all close by too! Golfers: Royal Birkdale is only a 20 -25 minute drive away - no public transport. Dinghy sailors, the National 24 hour and National Junior 12 hour races are just up the road in Southport (I help out at both).
Close to Edge Hill University with easy access to major road networks, yet in the heart of rural West Lancashire. 3m from the historic market town of Ormskirk, 20 minutes from sunny Southport by the sea, 30 mins from Liverpool & 45 mins from Manchester. 'The Den' is 3 minutes from the M58 (less than 15 minutes form the M6), in a small, quiet cul-de-sac, in rural surroundings. Two miles from Edge Hill University - accessible by bus. Two local pubs (serving food) within walking distance, a great Italian less than 5 minutes drive away and an Indian restaurant close to that. Alternatively you could drive into Ormskirk for a more comprehensive selection of eateries and pubs/bars etc or central Liverpool in less than 30 mins by car or train.
  • We enjoyed our stay with Amanda. Her neat little house is very convenient to Liverpool yet it has a rural atmosphere. There are two excellent pubs nearby (one a short walk away). Amanda is a gracious host. Cheryl and David (Canada)

  • Amanda is a very nice and friendly person. She's helpful and I felt very comfortable. You need a bike or a car, because it is too far away to walk to the city centre.

  • Had a very pleasant stay with Amanda. The house is lovely, quite compact, very clean. Amanda is an excellent host, very welcoming & supplied our preferred bread, milk, cereal options for breakfast. The bedroom is a compact double & the bathroom has an excellent shower. Would recommend. Also tried the local pub (The Stanley Gate), a 500yd walk, food & service were both excellent.

  • Sheila is friendly but will give you space if that's what you require. She went above and beyond by offering to collect me from Chorley bus station and next day dropped me off in Wrightington for the continuation of my walk. Fantastic value for money. Sheila made me scrambled eggs, veggie sausage and a hash brown for brekkie. The property has a power shower, the bed is comfy and there is butterfly wallpaper in the room, what more could you want!?

We have WiFi & free view TV. Our enclosed sunny garden has a patio set & our drive has parking for up to 2 vehicles.
Our home is in a lovely village but it is also well located for touring. We are around an hour to the Lake District & Yorkshire Dales. Liverpool & Manchester are easily commutable. We are also well placed for Aintree & Haydock racecourses. For keen golfers we are within 40 minutes from Birkdale, Royal Lytham & other links courses.
  • This is a brilliant base for going to Southport, about 23 miles, Blackpool about 40mins and Liverpool by train. Very quiet area, small house but incredibly spacious. Kitchen fully kitted out if you fancy a home made meal. Hosts fantastic, they really care about their guests. As per my 10 year old niece's words; I love this house, the bed is really comfy and I want a house just like it when I grow up! Village is also lovely to walk around.

  • Really really enjoyed our stay at Anne and Steve's house in Croston! The house was exceptionally clean and had everything we could possibly need. It was surprisingly big inside and in an extremly quiet location with lovely views out the upstairs windows. My husband and i both commented that it was quieter than our actual house in New Zealand!! We would love to stay again when we are next back in beautiful Croston!! Thankyou so much

    Marie2016-07-06T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great stay at Ann and Steve#s house, the house and village were both perfect for our stay.

    Richard2016-08-14T00:00:00Z
  • We found Ann & Steve's property at the last minute after a change of plan for a wedding we were attending in Mawdesley. The communication from them was excellent and the property itself was beautiful. Excellent value for money in a very quiet area and the property had everything to make our albeit short stay very comfortable. Lots of handy local information was provided at the property which would definitely have come in useful had we been there for longer! If we are ever in the area again we will definitely be looking to stay here again!

    Jess2017-10-01T00:00:00Z
  • Great quiet location, all and more of the basics you need in the kitchen etc. Spotless inside and out. Short walk over fields to pub central! Chippy recommended, though get there early to avoid the queue! Ann & Steve were great at keeping us informed and offering tips and days out. We had 3 kids under 8 and never felt cramped. Welcome pack has all the to town pub, restaurant and take-away menus. Great way to lose our airbnb cherry. Thanks Ann and Steve

There is also a traditional tea room, a bank and a hairdresser. There are two stores, Londis which is just across the road from the cottage and a Co-op by the local station.
  • Great house in a quaint little village. Right next to a nice little pub. House super clean and tastefully furnished! A bit of a trek to get to the tourist spots but the beautiful house and the lovely host make up for it!!

  • My family had a awesome time spent at Ann's home. The cottage is cosy, beautiful, immaculate and perfect.

  • A lovely place to stay, very well kept, had such a nice homely feel. There's a pub and Fish & Chip shop within walking distance and a shop across the road. If you have children there’s a nice park just around the corner as well.

    Mark2017-10-15T00:00:00Z
  • We had an excellent stay at Ann’s lovely cottage. She has a lot of homely touches - we even wondered if she lived here when she has no guests. The house has everything you will need and is conveniently located in a charming little village with good amenities. We ate at ´The Grapes’ and ´The Wheatsheaf’ and both were excellent for food and good value for money. It was very handy having a convenience store just across the road. We didn’t get to meet Ann (she offered to greet us but, not being sure of our arrival time, I declined her offer) but communication before our trip was very efficient. All in all, a very positive experience that I would highly recommend.

    Phil2017-12-03T00:00:00Z
  • Everything about Ann's lovely cottage is perfect! Ann has thought of everything. It's very comfortable, beautifully decorated and has everything you need and more. We were very grateful for the central heating on the chilly nights, and we enjoyed relaxing in the lovely lounge after a day out and playing some of the board games! The cottage is modern but still has that cosy and homey country feel. The beds are super comfy and the kitchen is really well equipped. I wish we had longer to make more use of it! Location wise it's great too. There's a pub right next door and a small supermarket across the road open til late, as well as several other pubs and restaurants within walking distance. We were in the area to visit relatives based near Blackpool but didn't want to stay in Blackpool itself, and Croston was an easy drive from Blackpool (we managed to see the last night of the illuminations), and also an easy drive from Chester and many other little villages. We didn't meet Ann but check in was super easy with a lock box to get the keys, and Ann was on hand via Airbnb if we had any questions (which we didn't) as well as there being a detailed house manual and lots of brochures. We had a lovely stay and highly recommend Croston and Ann's cottage for a visit to Lancashire. Thank you Ann :-)
