Places to stay in Ophir
Known also as Jenkins' Cottage and Outbuildings now restored and transformed into the Rail Trail Lodge. Our place was one of the historical miner’s residences and we kept the original and lovely vintage style for sharing it with you. Check the old wood burning stove kitchen and our many decorative touches, get relaxed and chill out with your family or friends! Free unlimited WiFi, NETFLIX and many parking spots.
BEDROOMS The place has three bedrooms that we named: Otago, Alpine and Fireside. Otago (Main bedroom): This is the biggest bedroom of the house, with a king size bed, decorative fireplace, wardrobe, wall heater, SmartTV with Freeview and NETFLIX, windows at the front and side of the house that allows plenty of sunlight to go in and the closest location to the main bathroom. Alpine: A middle size bedroom with a queen size bed, wall heater, closet, SmartTV with Freeview and NETFLIX, windows at the front and side of the house and it’s connected to kitchen by the front hallway. Fireside: A bedroom for kids or friends as it has two single beds, decorative fireplace, wardrobe, wall heater, SmartTV with Freeview and NETFLIX, a window at the front and it’s connected to kitchen by the front hallway. BATHROOM The house has a main bathroom inside the building and an outside toilet located outside the building. The main bathroom has shower and bathtub (able to be used for bubble bath), toilet, basin, towel heater, hair dryer, heater, under floor heating, skylight and a cupboard. LIVING The living room is located at the back of the house, between the main bathroom and the conservatory. It’s the biggest place at the house and an excellent spot for meetings. It has a dining table for six people, heat pump, under floor heating, skylights, ceiling fan, a big sofa and reading chairs next to the fire place which makes it perfect for relaxing evenings. Also, if you are a music lover please make use of our BOSE audio system! CONSERVATORY If we talk about getting relaxed, you have to check our conservatory. It is located at the back corner of the house and it’s been made mostly with stone and glass. It’s the perfect spot to have a breakfast and/or reading a book while enjoying the sunlight in the morning. It has a nice tractor table with four banquette seating, a “cow” design seating bench, bar fridge and a TV with Freeview. KITCHEN The kitchen is located between the front and inner hallway, connecting the three bedrooms. It has a complete set of appliances which includes: Electric stove and hobs, dishwasher, fridge, microwave, toaster, kettle and fridge with freezer. Robert Jenkins and his family lived in the tiny cottage and cooked in their stone lean-to kitchen. Jenkins worked as a blacksmith across the yard next to the stables. This cottage and its outbuildings, dating probably from the 1870s or early 1880s gives a real sense of the life in nineteenth century Ophir in its years as a gold mining town and rural service centre. Nowadays, Ophir has a population of only 50 and New Zealand's second-lowest official temperature of -21.6 °C was recorded at Ophir on 3 July 1995, even though it is not located at a high elevation. As a general attractions, Ophir it's right in the middle of the Otago Central Rail trail which makes a perfect spot for cyclist but also, it has an important historical relevance and many beautiful landscapes.
  • A beautiful place, looks small from the outside but very spacious. We were a group of five ladies and had plenty of room. Beautiful decor. Heated floors will be a bonus in winter!

Hollyhock Cottage is surrounded by roses and stone-walls and is one of the gems on the historic main street of Ophir. Come and smell the thyme-infused air, explore the wee lanes and relax in the large garden.
Hollyhock Cottage has been a much-loved home for generations of families. The roughcast and stone building has been built on to lovingly over the years to create a haven of nooks and crannies. There are 3 cosy bedrooms, a snug living area, a central kitchen and dining area, and a gorgeous sun-room. Outside there are six garden areas, including a courtyard, flower beds, a cricket lawn and horse-paddock. Bring your horse, bring your bikes and bring your fishing gear. Use the cottage as a writing retreat or use it as a base for family adventures.
Hollyhock Cottage is nestled in Ophir village. This old gold-mining village has a historic post-office to explore with the friendliest post-mistress in New Zealand, a stunning cafe, a cosy pub and, on seasonal weekends, tantalising vintage shops. Roses, poppies, hollyhocks and lavender abound. Kids will love the well-maintained village pool in the summer and the snowballs and frost in winter. There are swimming holes, picnic areas and walking tracks close by. Ophir is walking distance to the beautiful Manuherikia River and the famous Daniel O'Connell bridge. Just a short 2 km bike ride over the river is Omakau and the Central Otago Rail Trail. The village is in the heart of Central Otago - 15 minutes car ride from Alexander and Clyde, just over one hour from Queenstown, and two hours from Dunedin.

  • Peaceful. Quiet. Comfortable. Takes you back to your childhood. Thanks

    Sheena2019-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • Ophir is a quiet town that looks like only a few people, and the cottage is in the town centre, very quiet. The cabin is full of things, the owner also has a lot of blue and white porcelain plates, the backyard is a big pasture, and there is a sunny flower house. We stay in the hut and don't want to go, it is too comfortable, like Snow White's hut, hut The restaurant opposite is very good, the service aunt is very cute. I really hope that I can spend a little more time and stay for a few more nights.

    Letts Gully, Otago, New Zealand

A cabin on a hillside made of gold in historic Bendigo, the best-kept secret in Central Otago. Surrounded by vineyards on a rustic landscape steeped in gold mining history. We're 30 minutes from Wanaka, 50 from Queenstown airport, at the heart of everything that makes Central Otago so beautiful and unique. There's much to explore from walks to wineries. Pour yourself a glass of vino, soak in the outdoor tub and be awed by the panoramic views and the starry night sky, you'll never want to leave.
The cabin sleeps two guests comfortably in a Queen bed, with a full en-suite, kitchenette, wood burner and modern furnishings. The cabin has sliding doors that open out onto your decks that look over the panoramic surrounding views. On the bottom deck there is a sunken outdoor bath for you to soak all your worries away in. The night sky is something wonderful to behold here away from light pollution and if you're lucky you may even glimpse the magical Southern Lights in all their glory. The cabin is architecturally designed to have a small environmental footprint and sit in harmony with the natural landscape. It is perched high on a rocky outcrop at the foothills of the Dunstan Ranges, overlooking the expansive Clutha Basin with its pastoral scenes and enclosed on all sides by dramatic alpine mountain ranges. Your only neighbours are the surrounding vineyards in their ever-changing colours and the resident birdlife. Step inside and you will have all the comforts to help you forget your worries and slip into relaxation mode. The cabin is furnished to a high quality and all essentials are provided for. We are just a phone call away should you have any special requirements. A small kitchenette is provided for basic cold food preparation. It is not permitted to cook in the cabin for the comfort of all guests. You will find a toaster and kettle and a light breakfast, tea, and coffee are provided on arrival. We encourage guests to try one of the local restaurants for lunch or dinner - you will find a curated selection of our favourite spots in the cabins guidebook to help you to choose! There is a general store and cafe in Tarras 10mins away and a supermarket 15mins away in Cromwell for supplies also.
Bendigo is located at the top of Lake Dunstan, in the heart of Central Otago... We are in the middle of nowhere and at the centre of everything! The area has a rich history of pioneer gold mining and merino farming and is best known today as one of the finest Pinot Noir producing regions in the Central Otago. The site is scattered with windswept Kanuka and ancient rock formations that lend the landscape a unique raw beauty. You will probably not want to leave the cabin, but if you do, Bendigo has a variety of activities for everyone. From scenic walks through the vineyards and hills straight from your cabin doorstep to the fascinating mining ruins of Bendigo a short 5 min drive down the road as well as beautiful swimming and fishing spots of the Clutha River and Lake Dunstan a stone's throw. The Tarras Golf Club is a must for anyone keen to try their hand at golf at its most chilled out-think sheep on the fairways! Bendigo also serves as a great base to explore everything else Central Otago has to offer. Want to get out for an hour or two? 15 minutes away in Cromwell, the Cromwell Old Town Area is a lovely spot to grab a coffee and check out the local art scene at small galleries there. It also plays host to an artisan food and craft market most weekends where you can try all the amazing local produce. Cromwell is the stone fruit mecca of New Zealand and if you are lucky enough to be here during the right season you may end up with a Cherry addiction! 5 minutes further down the road is Bannockburn, a striking wine region where you can indulge in an afternoon of wine tasting at a number of great wineries. For a half-day trip we suggest driving through the shear sided Dunstan Gorge to reach the small historic town of Clyde that has an impressive dam, a boutique cinema, and a selection of shops and restaurants. You can hire a bike and cycle part of the world-famous Central Otago Rail Trail as it follows the Clutha river toward Alexandra. If you carry on past Clyde toward the Manuherikia Valley you will be greeted with wide open landscapes, made famous by the New Zealand Landscape painter Graham Sydney. The area is has a number of traditional small-town pubs where you can stop for a meal and a handle and get a chance to meet some proper southern folk. For the adventurous (and 4WD capable) the Thompson's Gorge Track will bring you back over the Dunstan Range directly to Bendigo (via a bumpy high country track!) Further afield - a full day outing can get you anywhere from a hot spring in Tekapo, a bush walk at Mt Cook National Park or skiing in Wanaka or Queenstown. The options are endless!
  • What an amazing place to stay. Quiet, secluded and unique. In the hills beside vineyards.A very special place.

  • A dream - this was our favorite stay on our trip. Very relaxing and an amazing view.

    susan2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely wonderful place to stay and we wish we had more time there. The views are breathtaking; we could have spent days sitting on the patio and gazing out at the valley below. Soaking in the outdoor tub as the sun set and the stars lit up made it feel like all was right with the world. I am certain that this will be one of my happy places that I can recall when I want to find peace. I may sound like I’m exaggerating, but I promise you I’m not; this cabin was remarkable and provided such a deep sense of rest and peace for us.

    Jacob2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • If you want a perfect mix of off-the-grid relaxation and scenic daytrips, the Dunstan cabin is the perfect spot. It's tiny and has the basics of everything you need — plus THAT bath. After a warm welcome by Harry the huntaway, we were blown away by the stunning view at the top of the stairs. The cosy cabin can get quite warm on a summer day but airs out rapidly in the evening breeze. Super comfortable bed, almost too comfortable because we ended up sleeping in most mornings! There's also plenty of storage for luggage. Wanaka is within easy distance, and we daytripped to Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park via the Clay Cliffs of Omarama (super cool) as well. The Cromwell Sunday market and Cloudy Bay Shed are also a must! Thanks Richie and Cynarra for making our honeymoon a memorable one (:

Lauder is a small settlement in the Otago Region of the South Island of New Zealand. It is located in Central Otago, 8 km northeast of Omakau, on the main route between Alexandra and Ranfurly on State Highway 85. The settlement was named after the town of the same name in southern Scotland, one of many Otago sites to be named after places in the Scottish borders by John Turnbull Thomson. Lauder had a station on the former Otago Central Railway and served as a railway servicing town from the time the rails reached the town in 1904. It remains a popular stopover on the Otago Central Rail Trail. Lauder is the closest settlement to the Poolburn Gorge, a popular sight on the rail trail. The local Lauder Hotel within walking distance is perfect for an evening meal serving wonderful food sourced locally. The Stationside Cafe serves a selection of tasty goodies throughout the day including coffee, ice creams etc.

There's much to explore from walks to wineries to a day on the lake and skiing in Wanaka. Pour yourself a glass of Vino on the deck, soak in the panoramic view and you'll never want to leave.
The cabin sleeps two guests comfortably in a Queen bed, with a full sized en-suite, kitchenette, wood burner and modern furnishings. The cabin has sliding doors that open out onto your deck that looks over the panoramic surrounding views.

  • This air bnb is a must if you are on the South Island! The cabin is gorgeous! And the views and serenity are the best you will find. Our guest accommodation is a good sized double bedroom with a new Queen sized bed. The large windows in the room provide a wonderful view out to the surrounding countryside and the star filled night sky. Breakfast items provided include bread for toast, jams / conserves, muesli / cereal, yogurt and our farm fresh eggs. All amenities in our home are shared
Located on over 15ha, we finished building our home at the end of 2016. As a panelised building, it's fairly unique for this area. Architecturally designed, it blends into the surrounding environment. The interior is lined with a beautiful ply which is light and modern. We enjoy welcoming guests to share our home with us. We have a herd of around 40 adult goats - some of which have been hand raised and enjoy welcoming our guests if it means that they will get a scratch and potentially a treat :-). Seasonally we also have the goat kids that we breed.
Our nearest neighbour is approximately 400 metres away and as there is very little light pollution in our area, it is an ideal spot for star gazing (or spotting satellites as they fly over). Alexandra township is approximately a 10-15 minute drive from our property as is the beautiful historical Clyde.

This unit is the Nave of a modified 120 yrs old Church. It is a self contained place ready for you to use as a base or home as you explore Central Otago, from curling in Naseby, to skiing in Queenstown, or just rest and enjoy the peacefulness of a rural Central Otago village. Nearby are hotels and cafes, service station and golf course or fish in the Manuherikia River. Try your luck for gold mining.
This is a church built in 1897, converted in 2017 for accommodation. Enjoy the peacefulness and tranquility of an old gold mining town of Ophir. If you don't want to cook, there is a first class restaurant, and a local hotel, both in close walking distance.
Ophir is an Old gold mining town of the latter 1800's. Many of its buildings have survived and been restored. The oldest and still working Post Office is a great place to visit and read of the village's history. Pitches Store is a restaurant/cafe and of course St Andrew's Church, your accommodation. Join in when functions are on in the village hall or the petanque tournament in February.
  • beautiful place the area is full of historical buildings and bridges. we enjoyed the river cruise on the Clyde river . very comfy bed. owners avilable and helpful. I would stay again. I appreciate the seat in the shower and used it when i had a shower.

  • This place is full of character and has been very well converted. Many of the original features have been retained. The nave is a lovely big space with everything you need. The vestry is cosy and comfortable. Ophir is a cute little town and provides a great base to explore the area. We had a meal at Blacks hotel which was a good standard and reasonably priced. Would definitely stay here again.

  • A lovely place to stay. Well equipped and with a lovely bath - something some may be missing if travelling. We enjoyed lovely meal ( not cheap) at the Pitcher and also beer outside there. There are other places to eat - a choice in a beautiful village is great bonus. However the kitchen is well equipped to cook - good NW supermarket in Alexàndra. Ophir is only 2km from rail trail and bike hire near by so perfect to cycle part of trail if you don't want to do all. Head east for best views. A 40 km ish round trip with bit of a climb takes you to great scenery and also cafe stop for lunch. Really recommend and Russell was great host. Perfect place to enjoy this special part of central Otago!

From a personal welcome to delicious brownies Mary does a fantastic job to make you feel like you can put your feet up and take in the scenery around you. Would for sure recommend a nights stay here for those looking to feel like they are at home away from home. Thanks again Mary for your outstanding hospitality 😊

    Salome2019-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • My teenage boys loved Mary's place as much as us, and said it was a highlight of our road trip around South Island (even though we only stayed one night). The space was perfect for 5 and everyone immediately relaxed. The rooms are comfortable, clean, spacious with great outlook. The surrounding hills look stunning just before sunset, so a walk or drive is recommended. The puzzles, books and movies were all so appreciated. We got take away homemade pies from the cafe in town so we could stay at her house, not go out!

    Cassy2019-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • A delightful cottage nestled in the tranquility of the countryside, just off the rail trail. Mary is a warm and friendly host and will make you all feel welcome.

  • Angie has a little one bedroom sleepout at the back of her house. It is fully self contained with a kitchenette, bathroom, TV and airconditioner. It is small but well suited for a single traveller or couple. The property is right in the town of Alexandra in Central Otago an easy walking distance to the central business area. Angie is very sociable and happy to help her guests with any issues and suggestions of things to do or places to go for a meal. The Ferris Street Brewery is just around the corner and it's a great place for puzza and beer or wine! We thoroughly enjoyed our week at Angie's place and would recommend her place for any future travellers.

View of the hills can be seen from the bedroom window, house is adequately heated for winter and cool in summer. Plenty of living area, porch for summer, modern kitchen, plenty of hot water as we have a wet back system. Plenty of area for parking and a back lawn and flower gardens make the home attractive. A five to ten minute walk to Clyde’s amenities, movie theatre, restaurants, bowling green, tennis courts, golf course. A nice walk down to the Clutha river. Museum & hydro dam, interesting.
The guests can use all of my home and their bedroom. There are areas outside to enjoy the fresh air and peacefulness of Clyde.
We have a walkway where people can walk in a park like surroundings instead of walking along the street. This is where the Central Rail Trail is and was the route of the old railway line. If you keep walking to the town centre you will pass the the old railways station and then head to the shops or restaurants. If you go the other way towards Alexandra you can walk to the underpass and see the mural one of the local artists is painting to depict the life of the rail trail. If you are really keen you can walk into Alexandra and then after spending time there, you can cross the bridge over the Clutha river to the Earnscleugh side and walk back to Clyde. A quick trip would be three hours.
  • Top host. Everything was really tidy and Catherine is a great person with a big heart and a big hospitality. Clyde is a small but really nice little town. You can get good café and food in Clyde. We really recommend this spot.

    Lukas2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • A great room and lots of interaction with the owner if you want. From Clyde you can cycle well over a former railway line. The river trail is a good alternative to get on the rail trail in Alexander. Well worth the effort. Rent bikes at the old station in Clyde

Not only is the house super cozy and comfortably arranged, Kathy is the most lovely host one can ask for! You'll love her homemade bread and her fantastic hospitality. Couldn't recommend it more! :)

  • Wow! Absolutely amazing to go back in time and stay in stone huts. These refurbished miners dwellings are warm, cosy and full of history. We enjoyed exploring the paddocks , being awakened by horses and guarded all night by Cruise the dog. Sarah was very welcoming and made sure we were ok. We lit the fire and fell asleep to crackling logs and light rain on the roof. Magical place, you must visit!

As a suggestion, start the River Trail at Clyde and bike to the Hole-In-The-Rock Bed and Breakfast, then continue on your journey in the morning along the RiverTrail and connect to the Rail Trail. The Earnscleugh district is packed with orchards and vineyards. Come explore the local vineyards and sample some local wines. Explore nearby Clyde, Alexandra, and Fraser, Conroys and Butchers Dams. Take a day trip to Glenorchy (rated the eighth most scenic drive in the world), Blue Lake at St Bathans, Ophir (formerly Blacks, reknown for gold mining, and known to be the hottest and coldest place in the country).

  • A really great location and wonderful Clyde to visit and enjoy the cuisine. We even went to the Clyde cinema. Both Jane and Steve were great hosts. Biked the trail from their place to Clyde and back. Fun along the river. Delicious breakfast in our lovely studio apartment too

    Blackmans Alexandra, Otago, New Zealand

Since the 1920s the Poolburn Hotel has been the meeting place of the Ida Valley. Nestled in the remote highlands of Central Otago, between Dunedin and the Lakes District, the valley is an adventure mecca. No longer a pub, we now offer lodging and guided activities to adventurers from afar. You'll relax in a recently renovated room, with ensuite. Please send a message if you have any special requirements or are interested in some activities.
What adventures are on offer? Some of our favourites include: Biking the Poolburn Gorge Tunnels & Viaduct, the highlight of the iconic Rail Trail. Fishing in the Poolburn Reservoir with a picnic lunch (possibly) including freshly caught Koura crayfish. Mountain bike shuttles on the downhill tracks above the historic township of Clyde. Cross country mountain biking in the rocky terrain of Alexandra or pine forests of Naseby. Horse riding in the valley, made famous by the Riders of Rohan from The Lord of The Rings movies. Standup paddleboarding on the beautiful Blue Lake at St Bathans. Winery tour of the vineyards around Alexandra, home to some classic Central Otago Pinot Noirs.
The pub is surrounded by farmland. The dirt road to the Poolburn Reservoir is bumpy but accessible to 2WD vehicles except in winter.
  • Cool place for biking and trips to Queentown etc. Wifi works fine on the whole terrain and the lawn and the hammock are already now perfect for a relaxing afternoon in the sun. Sara the chef is a fab cook - make sure you eat there!

  • Had a great stay with Mark and Matt! They are very friendly, amazing hospitality. Check out Muddy Creek Cafe in Omakau, probably the best pies I've ever had

  • Mark and Matt were the best! Nothing but good things to say about the pub. Mark is a great cook and they made me feel right at home. Lots of things to do in the area and they gave me some good places to see on the rest of my trip. The place is going to look so nice when all the renovations are done! Highly recommend!

  • Mark and Matt are great hosts! The accomodation is really comfortable and quiet, the food is great and both of the hosts are good company. They took me out cray fishing and we enjoyed having them for dinner later on. This is a great spot where you can be comfortable kicking back and relaxing, or getting out and exploring the area. Highly recommended.

  • Mark is a great host, and the old Poolburn Pub is already a cool venue, but will be an amazing place to stay when its all finished

  • Mark's place was so different than anywhere we've stayed, we had such a great time! Mark offers the option to get dinner/breakfast and has drinks available for purchase as well, and it was so worth it. Everything was so fresh and yummy, it just added to the overall experience at this unique space! Mark was super hospitable and really went above and beyond to make us feel welcome!

  • This is easily the coolest spot I’ve stayed in New Zealand! It’s a restored/repurposed pub that serves as an authentic, outdoory Airbnb. Mark is an amazing host and goes out of his way to make sure people have a great time. I had the best sleep of my life here. The dogs are incredibly fun and friendly. The breakfast is amazing. You really feel like you’re part of the family. I 110% recommend staying here, it will be one of your favorite experiences in NZ. Thanks Mark!
