Your guide to Nakusp
All About Naskup
Positioned on the shores of Upper Arrow Lake and surrounded by the Selkirk and Monashee mountain ranges, Nakusp is a small community in British Columbia’s West Kootenay region abundant in outdoor activities. The trails that wind their way around the surrounding mountains offer ample hiking opportunities for all skill levels. In warmer months, the lake is full of swimmers and water sports enthusiasts. By far the biggest draw of the area are the pristine natural hot springs, where you can soak your tired muscles after a long day of adventuring.
Between hikes and soaks, you’ll find shops, galleries, and restaurants to enjoy in the tiny downtown area. Nakusp also boasts a waterfront walkway with lovely gardens and equipment rentals for outdoor activities. During the winter months, you may even have the opportunity to marvel at the Northern Lights.
The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Nakusp
The best time to secure your vacation rental in Nakusp depends on the activities you enjoy. If you love winter sports, you can be sure of snow from November through March, and there are plenty of opportunities for cross-country and downhill skiing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing. Spring weather is variable, ranging from quite cool to fairly warm as it gets closer to summer. This is a great time to visit local wineries, explore the nearby McDonald Creek Provincial Park, or hike one of the many trails in the area.
Summers tend to be hot, so take advantage of the lovely sandy beach on Upper Arrow Lake, where you can swim or rent a canoe or kayak. The village hosts a number of events and festivals over the summer, ranging from music events to a colorful farmers’ market. The weather cools down quickly in fall, but many outdoor activities are still available, and the Nakusp Hot Springs remain open all year round. You can expect some rainfall at any time of year, but the area experiences the least in winter and summer.
Top things to do in Nakusp
Kuskanax Creek Footbridge & Falls
Just a short walk from the hot springs, you’ll find a picturesque covered bridge over the rushing Kuskanax Creek. The 118-foot-long bridge, built recently, has a viewing platform in the middle. Once you’ve taken in the surrounding landscape, continue along the path 10 minutes to Kuskanax Falls, which are particularly impressive in the spring. From here you can also walk a little over half a mile to the source of the hot springs or 2.5 miles to Kimbol Lake.
Wild Hot Springs
Throughout the area along some of the trailways, you’ll find wild hot springs. Most accessible are Halfway Hot Springs, which allows intrepid visitors to experience hot springs in a magical setting. In some of the springs, the water bubbles out of the hillside into stone-lined, mud-bottomed pools. Note that you cannot drive into the site in winter, but you can snowshoe in via the seven-mile service road.
Waterfront Walkway
It may only be about half a mile long, but Nakusp’s Waterfront Walkway is a delight. Starting at the marina, stroll along the shore of Upper Arrow Lake amid various gardens rich with flowers from April to October. Stop and relax in the Japanese Garden with its charming footbridge, finishing at the sandy beach to enjoy its view of the crystal-clear lake and the mountains beyond.
