Places to stay in Motrone
Throughout the summer, Barga comes alive with many typical food fairs, music festivals and art exhibitions. The house is set within olive groves and fruit trees, vegetable gardens and forests, with stunning views all around. The garden is perfect for dining 'al fresco' and to enjoy the view and sound of the bells of Barga's cathedral, that so inspired the poet Pascoli. Barga is only 40 mins drive from Lucca, 50 from Pisa and 90 from Florence.
This is a really quite location, yet in 10 mins walk-2 mins by car, you are in the heart of Barga old town. Lovely one bedroom flat with independent entrance, situated just out of the beautiful medieval village of Barga, with breathtaking views. Here you will find a living area with a sitting room with a sofa bed, a kitchen, a large bedroom and a bathroom with shower. There is also a large garden with a panoramic view over Barga's cathedral and the surrounding countryside. Feel free to take any fruit or herb you like, from our many trees and plants or our organic vegetable garden, depending on the season. Barga is one of the 100 most beautiful medieval villages in Italy, as reported on the guide 'I 100 borghi più belli d'Italia'. In summer the village organizes many events like local food fairs, Barga jazz festival, art exhibitions and craft markets. Garfagnana is an area of outstanding beauty, with some of the most spectacular scenery Tuscany has to offer. Barga is ideal for those who like trekking, cycling or art. In fact there are many trekking routes near the house. From Barga you can reach Lucca and Pisa in 45 and 60 minutes' drive, and Florence in 1.15 hrs. You can also easily reach the famous Abetone, the Parco dell'Orecchiella or visit one of the many medieval villages nearby.
Barga is a beautiful medieval village which comes alive in the Spring and Summer months with its many festivals and events- the international jazz festival, Piazzette, the Scottish week, food fairs and markets, and much more. In the old part you can find delicious restaurants and cafes, art exhibitions and a really nice theatre. In the newer part there are more restaurants, an Irish pub, excellent patisseries, many local food shops, a supermarket, a chemist's, a cinema, a post office, banks and a petrol station.
  • I can’t praise Paolo and Laura enough!! They are genuinely wonderful and kind human beings who I appreciate immensely. I got lost looking for their house (my train got in late and my phone didn’t work lol). Laura had the utmost care and concern for me and proceeded to go on a manhunt for me lol. She and Paolo drove in their car until they found me. I can’t thank them both enough for the patience and warmth they showed me. To make things even better, their house is so beautiful. I was looking for a weekend getaway and their place was absolutely perfect. They offered me so many tips on good restaurant and hiking trails around the area. They also made sure I felt completely comfortable in the space and had a fun weekend planned. I really do hope to come back in the future and spend a longer time in such great place!!

  • Thanks Paolo, you are really a very good host!

  • We loved our stay in Barga. The views were outstanding and Laura looked after us very well. Highly recommended.

  • We were only there for one night but wish we had planned longer. The view was absolutely breathtaking and the short walk into Barga was beautiful. Hope to be back soon.

  • Very pretty house, in a location with a superb view. The owners are of absolute kindness, very helpful. An experience ruined only by the rain but that leaves the desire to return, perhaps for a weekend of escape from everyday commitments. Highly recommended

  • Laura and Paolo's place is amazing. The view from the front terasse is breathtaking. Communication was easy and fast, the appartment was perfect for my partner and our baby, the kitchen was clean and efficient, bed was comfy, and everything was as described. The pizza oven was fun to experiment with and Barga was charming to discover. Laura was so lovely and accessible. We highly recommend this place for anyone who wants to relax, read, eat well, explore a small town and neighboring areas. I hesitate to rave about this place/Barga, because I want to keep it a secret! We hope to come back soon!

  • A great place to experience Barga. We highly recommend this place in every way!

    Daphne2019-10-07T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely and very tastefully furnished apartment surrounded by a nice little garden with stunning views of Barga. The old town with restaurants and bars can be reached after a 15-20 minutes stroll. Paolo and Laura are very forthcoming and we’re always available, they provided restaurant tips and reservations and even invited us to pick fruit and veg in the garden if we like. The tomatoes were gorgeous!

    Barga, Toscana, Italy

Situated in an authentic Tuscan hilltop village, this villa is a rustic sanctuary. Positioned perfectly for your ultimate Italian holiday with the location offering the cities and culture, hiking and walks, Mediterranean sea, skiing, and always and plentiful amounts of incredible food and wine. Just 80min from Pisa airport, and 40min from Lucca, this villa is a must see, and best accessed by car. And for those who just want time to experience local Italian life - this is your home.
Enquire about having the whole house to yourself ....... The house has been a renovation project close to our Daughters heart . Currently living in London, she is a young professional from New Zealand who decided to buy this standalone house and restore it to it's former glory. The house is hundreds of years old, and is situated at the original entrance of the village, marking one of the oldest buildings in the area. So, what's within walking distance? The great news is that you are in a secluded village surrounded by ample walking trails, freshly grown fruit and vegetables, olive trees, grape vines and next level views in a true Tuscan setting. So while you will need a car, you can happily spend your time exploring the village and surroundings on foot. How far is the beach? Just over an hour's drive to the area of Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi. On the Mediterranean, it's the ultimate beach destination. A 2.5hrs drive will take you all the way to Levanto - the forgotten village of Cinque Terre - and where we highly recommend as a must see destination. Spend the day walking between the villages or taking the train, knowing you can drive home flushed with the sun and ready for a big relaxing sleep. Otherwise, it's a 1.5hr drive to La Spezia, the southern gateway to the famous Five Terraces. What restaurants and bars are nearby? Meals are available 200 metres away at our Guest Restaurant in Motrone. Nearest shops and Restaurants are a 30 minute drive down the hill . Alternatively, ask me about the local produce that can be delivered to your doorstep for a small charge! There is also a bread delivery 3 times a week to the village. Breakfast, should I expect it? We will supply a few local produced items to get you started in the morning including coffee (very important) a full delicious breakfast from home grown produce is available at our Guests Restaurant. What's the village like? Very small, idyllic, and potentially nothing like you've experienced before! At the top of a winding narrow road, lies Motrone. Hundreds of years old, this village has seen much more than world wars. The road was build in the 60's, and ironically saw the decline of the village population. Back in it's hay-day, the locals will tell you of 300+ people filling the cobble stone streets of the mountainous retreat, living off the land and meeting to go on dates with the good looking folks from neighbouring villages. Nowadays, its an ageing population, but doesn't keep the locals from having a great time and being super friendly (albeit interested in the people who find themselves there!). You'll find no shops here, however more information is below. What is there to do in the area? Tuscany is at your doorstep. The following places are day great day trips and don't involve much driving: - Lucca - Pistoia - Cinque Terre - Florence (ask us about tips for free parking) - Pisa - Chianti region - think wine - Garfagnana - Abetone (brilliant skiing in Winter) - Forte dei Marmi, Viareggio, Livorno - Volterra - Much much more See Visit Tuscany for much more information.
Ancient Tuscan Village on the Via Clodia an ancient Roman road. Motrone was known in times of old as the eyes of Lucca and afforded waring fractions a vista in most directions keeping the inhabitants safe - today Motrone retains much of its old charm. A peaceful, friendly place from where you can launch your tour of Tuscany, especially Lucca and the upper Serchio Valley, incorporating visits to the Devils bridge at Borgo a Mozzano, the termal spa at Bagni di Lucca, rotto del Vento (cave of the winds) the old city of Barga and its Cathedral, and not forgetting the Castelnuovo and Castiglione. Many of the numerous small towns in the area have open air markets at least one day of the week, and again don't forget to look out for the advertising on the main road advertising fiestas during the summer months.
  • Inger: From a snowy mountain road of 8 kilometers, through dense vegetation, you arrive at the most beautiful little mountain town of Motrone. There are 11-12 parking spaces adjacent to the city, as cars cannot be driven in the very narrow streets. They provide complete tranquility and are only disturbed by an alarm clock in the form of 2-3 cocks trying to cross each other early in the morning. The house itself is beautifully renovated with great respect for the original. The heat source is a large stove that supplies heat to the radiators of the house. Unfortunately, it did not get started, so it was very cold. But the host couple had provided electric radiators and gas heaters, so with lots of candles and woolly socks, everything went well. The location and views are unique. From 2 of the bedrooms you can lie in bed watching the sunrise over the mountains. Absolutely amazing. The host couple are very friendly and helpful. Jens: In less than one week you feel almost at home in Monstrone. Stay one week more to take it all in. A few weeks more you may stay forever! It was a pleasure to stay in the luxury apartment. It was a special pleasure to meet the most kindly hosts with whom we had good meals and parties (after our own choice). There is nothing else to say than rent a small car and go there (as long as possible). Steen: Coming to Motrone, Geoff and Jenny is almost like coming home to a place I didn't know I needed and a family I didn't know I was going to miss after a week there. Have already made arrangements to return next year, and then stay there for 4-6 weeks. Was a little frightened when we had just arrived at the "town" and the house, but it didn't take long before I let the mood overpower my stressed out mind that here I could not only survive, but actually maybe finally live. The house, which is approx. 500 years old, of course, is characterized by this, but it works. New tenants of this place should probably choose to come to this house during the slightly warmer months, but less so that the lighthouse works. So it didn't when we were there in October, but Geoff and Jenny provided a gas stove and electric heat so we got along. I look forward to returning to this very special place.

  • The property had everything we needed for our stay and we enjoyed evenings on the terrace watching the sunset over the mountains. The property is remote and there are no amenities in Motrone but this is what we were looking for! There are plenty shops and restaurants a short drive away. Also it is a great base for easily visiting Apuan Alps, Lucca and other nearby towns or cities.

    Sara2019-09-20T00:00:00Z
  • Just a brilliant place to stay, a big and comfortable house with all the facility’s you need, but the location makes it one of the best places I’ve ever been. The view from the terrace is amazing, the village itself is tiny but unique. We've also enjoyed dinner with Geoff and Jenny with food from their own farm, it was a great experience.

  • Wonderful accommodations in a charming beautiful setting. Will plan to come again.

  • Me and my father visited Geoff and Jenny for 4 days, they are both very kind, welcoming and open minded. We discussed everything from life to politics. I would say that by the end we became part of the family. Also Jenny is a great cook, her meals are truly amazing and full of flavor and pair well with Geoff's excellent home-made wine.

    Marek2019-07-02T00:00:00Z
  • My stay with Geoff and Jenny was great from start to finish! They were so welcoming, they have a beautiful home, and it was great to sit and chat with then over a meal or a glass of wine. The views from the house and the village of Motrone are second to none! It was 100% worth the trek up the hill and I would recommend a stay with Geoff and Jenny to anyone that wants to stay in a beautiful place with good people. Hope to be back one day!

  • When you book this Airbnb you will experience life at a slower pace off the beaten path. The village high up in the mountains is suspended in time and the scenery is gorgeous. The hosts are wonderful and very welcoming. If you chose to eat dinner with them (for a very reasonable price) you won’t be disappointed since they grow/make/raise almost everything they eat and serve. It was delicious! If you plan to visit Lucca while in Motrone, give yourself a good 50 minutes to get down the mountain and into the city. Driving the narrow, winding road up/down the mountain can be scary but take your time and honk around each corner just to be safe. You will love your visit to Motrone!

    Sara2019-03-22T00:00:00Z
  • Definitely I will never forget about the amazing experience I had in Motrone. This place has a very special meaning to me and I had all support from Geoff and Jenny during the time I was there. They are the best and the most lovely hosts you can meet. The village and all the people who live there are so nice, with lots of love and stories to share. The view from Motrone and all the landscape are such incredible. You can enjoy the nature, good food and wine and also feel the power of this historical place. “Quite nights of quite stars” ❤️.. I’m in love with Motrone, hope I will be back soon. Thank you Geoff and Jenny.

  • Wonderful place!

    Michel2018-09-27T00:00:00Z
  • Words can’t describe just how magical this place is! Our hosts were all too kind when we ended up getting almost 4 hours later than originally planned and had plenty of wine to offer when they saw the absolutely ridiculous rental car that held us up. Dinner was absolutely incredible and we were profoundly grateful that they were patient enough to hold dinner for us. We got a fascinating history of the village as well as delightful conversation and woke to a tour of their working farm, which we hope to return to sooner than later. The actual apartment was stylish and comfortable with a view of the sky from the patio that puts our home to shame. 5 stars simply isn’t a high enough rating and our only regret is that we weren’t able to stay longer. The fresh air, even fresher food, and the smells of the forest and stone will be one of my favorite memories for years to come.

    Raquella2018-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • This is the place to be if you want to escape the hoards of tourists and see a beautiful small town. If you want a beautiful home cooked meal and great wine this is the place to be. Keep in mind that it does take a while to get here, but I would say that it is sooo worth it!

  • Geoff and Jenny were fabulous and made this stay one that we just can't stop talking about. They have a location that is truly special, and worth the drive up the hill for the vista and for the feeling of a small Italian hill town. We elected for home cooked food, too. It was delicious, made our arrival extra relaxing, and was sourced with their homegrown produce. We also took and would highly recommend the cheese course. While it does take some time, it was a perfect way to explore around Matrone while we waited between steps! They went above and beyond to make this stay memorable, and we could hardly recommend it enough.

  • What a fantastic experiance living at a mountaintop "at the end of the road" in a village with just 30 inhabitants (32 while we were there) incl. 2 young families with kids. Geoff and his wife are such lovely people who are keen to make your stay memorable. Interesting in conversation and although living mostly isolated very interested in the world. Thank you for the many good conversations and everything. Make sure to book breakfast and dinner to make your life richer.

'The Arches' is a beautiful, traditional Garfagnana home. The building is around 500 years old, and is thought to be at the very heart of the original Cardoso, with the village growing around this centre over the next few centuries. Recently restored, the house has many original features, including wooden beams, terracotta tiles and its two distinctive arches. Quality features complement this history in the form of two modern bathrooms, central heating and a contemporary kitchen.
Over the years, The Arches has provided inspiration for visiting artists and writers. The recent restoration highlights the beauty of the house and will inspire you in your endeavours, be they creative, culinary or pure relaxation. The kitchen has state-of-the-art equipment, with a range of Italian cookery books for you to use. You can relax in the spacious living room, in the private outdoor space off this room, or on the terrace, with a coffee from the moka pot or the Lavazza machine, enjoying unique views of this beautiful village. Full wi-fi means you can catch up with the outside world. Alternatively, make use of the library of books and collection of board games, DVDs or Netflix TV for indoor evenings.
Cardoso is an incredibly welcoming and friendly village, perched high in the hills of Garfanagna, a protected national park area, rich with history and culture. The village has a restaurant and bar - ideal places for al fresco drinking and dining on warm evenings, with beautiful views of the valleys and mountain beyond. The church sits at the top of the village, its bell sounding out the time for the villagers every hour. Narrow alleys and stone steps trace the paths around the village, and country paths take you further into the surrounding area; to the woods, the cross at the top of the mountain, and the old mill and waterfall. Barga can be seen directly across the valley, at the same height as Cardoso, on the opposite mountain. This is a lively town in summer, full of musical and other cultural events, a 20-minute drive from Cardoso. Lucca is ideal for a day trip by car or train, and its ancient walls are a beautiful place to stroll, whatever time of year, pre or post a delicious Lucchese lunch. Other day trip options are Pisa, Florence and the beaches around Viareggio. The Garfanagna is an excellent place for walking, river swimming and cycling, and there are a variety of opportunities for adventure activities such as canyoning. In the winter months, Abetone is a day trip skiing destination.
  • Emma's place exceeded our expectations! A charmingly restored rustic home with original features in an incredibly beautiful setting. Communication with Emma was excellent and our stay was delightful! The house is really well equipped so you can feel right at home and there were so many thoughtful touches, lovely artwork and books throughout. We loved staying in an authentic village, mingling with the friendly locals and walking to the waterfall. We only wish we'd stayed longer but we will certainly return!!!

    Penelope2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • I cannot recommend Emma's place enough. It was truly wonderful - I wish I had been able to stay a lot longer. I will be going back! Everything is provided to make the place above average, the quality of everything is amazing. The village was a delight.

  • The property was absolutely amazing!!! All the small touches and the fast resposes, this property is absolutely amazing! Very comfortable and for 5 people there was plently of space! The place was extremely clean and had everything we needed. Great location and very easy/welcoming check-in prpcess. I will definitely be returning to this property!

  • We loved our stay at Emma’s! The house is modern rustic and perfectly equipped, especially the kitchen, and the dining spot by the fireplace so charming to gather the whole family! We enjoyed the music and book collection, and I imagine in the summer it must be great to read those on the terrace with a glass of wine. Also Cardoso is such a beautiful village with incredible views over the mountains.

  • Very nice and well-kept house in a rustic style! Emma is quick and courteous in her answers and her intermediary Monica is very nice and helpful. Highly recommended for exploring the area of Lucca and its surroundings!

  • A lovely newly renovated apartment in typical mountain village . If you are happy to park your car in the village parking lot and walk with your gear about 5 minutes up to the apartment you will not be disappointed as it is beautifully furnished with lots of English books and beautiful paintings as well as an especially well equipped kitchen. We enjoyed some great walks through the forests straight from the door.

    Marcel2019-10-25T00:00:00Z
  • Emma's home is an absolute dream and we can't recommend enough to stay here. The house is tastefully decorated as you would your own home and it was so hard to leave! The rooms are filled with beautiful artwork as well as inspiring novels and cook books which were great to flick through on the outside terrace with a pot of tea (or wine!). The outside terrace really makes it, you are surrounded by green mountains and it is breathtakingly silent other than the occasional sound of a neighbour singing sweet sweet Italian! The kitchen was stocked with good quality equipment (lovely pots and non-stick pans, stick blender, electronic scales etc) and there was even wine, milk, fresh bread, oils, spices and a wee herb garden outside. The bedroom was a very calm and relaxing space and we appreciated the quality of the duvet and bedding. The bedroom was also much lighter than expected (the photos don't do it justice!). We also really appreciated being met by Mony (as Emma was out of town) who bought us coffee at the nearby restaurant before taking us to the house. We can't wait to come again in the winter and make use of the dreamy fireplace! Lastly Emma was very generous with the check-in and out time which was incredibly helpful as I was working remotely. Thank you so much for having us and we can't wait to stay again. Best, Matt and Natasha

  • Emmas apartment was amazing. It has everything you need and we adored staying there for a week. So peaceful and quiet. The hilltop village is gorgeous and we spent many evenings on the terrace with a vino. You defintely need a car which you have to park at the bottom of the village. The walk up with luggage is about 400 mts. A few ups and downs and about 12 steps up to the front door. The apartment is beautiful with huge timber beams and white washed walls. Comfy bed and I loved the sound of the church bells chiming. Would absolutely recomend this place if you are looking for an authentic village stay

  • We had a two night stay at Alessandro. The property is beautifully located outside with a spacious lawn and a pool where you can relax with a view of the wooded hills (do not forget mosquito spray apply!). Alessandro has picked us up in the village and led us to. It would be hard to find otherwise. In the house everything was available what we could wish for. The bed was comfortable and the decor very stylish. We can fully recommend the accommodation!

    Michael2019-10-12T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely time at Alessandro’s place. It more than met expectations. The photos show the interior as it is but it felt more spacious than expected. It was very clean and the bed very comfortable. The garden around the property was very spacious with several seating options and a surprisingly large and well located pool giving us great views and privacy. Whilst a car is really necessary to explore the Barga area, the village was easily walkable.

    Alison2019-09-10T00:00:00Z
  • GORGEOUS! The comfort of the house, the kindness of Alexander, the pool and the huge garden have made our stay perfect. Highly recommended even for those with dogs. our nn wanted more to come away (and in truth not even me).

    Francesca2019-09-03T00:00:00Z
  • The house of Alessandro is really very beautiful, furnished in an original way, as my wife Ethnic-Chic says, many objects are handmade by him, very good! Clean, functional, with table to eat outside and wicker lounge, to read or relax in a cool place. The garden ..... Garden? 1 immense park !!!!! Fantastic ! Our 2 furry babies, they were very happy to have so much space !! The icing on the cake, the pool, bathing, looking at the mountains, puts you at peace with the world .... Super highly recommended !!!!!!!!

  • We had a great time at Alessandro's accomodation. Everything is as it's shown on the pictures - maybe even better. The communication went perfectly even though we didn't speak the same language (thanks to Google translator). We can definitely recommend this apartment and would come back again!

A supermarket in San Martino can offer you drink and food or the restaurants will offer you this. It's all walking distance.
  • Octavie's house is surrounded by greenery and is a typical rustic Tuscan style. We found ourselves very well, a good base for the Lucca Comics (about 20 minutes from Lucca)

  • Octavie and Godard are very generous and kind people. I had a great time there. The house and the surroundings are beautiful. I would very much like to return and I recommend it very much! Ps. and Octavie's breakfasts are delicious!!

  • We really recommend this place to everyone who is looking for peace and quiet. The house is beautifully situated, surrounded by nature, with a very climatic, cosy interior. The hosts - Octavie and Godard - are very nice and hospitable. We really appreciate their enormous work they put into making the whole place ecological, and the way they live and think about the environment. It's great that there are such places and such people.

  • Exceptional stay in this haven of peace in the middle of Tuscany, the place is simply magic. The house is a bit lost in the middle of nowhere but thanks to the good indications of Octavia, we found right away. Near Pisa and the seaside, with quite a few restaurants around, it's really the ideal place to visit Tuscany and especially to recharge your batteries! I highly recommend

  • We recommend this place to enjoy the silence and tranquility of the woods. Strategic position, one hour from the sea and close to a lot of excursions in the mountains, but also to medieval villages. Beautiful garden with barbecue and pool, my children no longer wanted to leave! Right next to the house is a river with a fantastic natural pool. Gianluca and his family are very helpful and friendly.

    Fabio2019-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • We had a amazing experience! Gianluca and his family were wonderful. They were always there for us and answering our questions. This place is comfortable and felt like home. There is plenty to do. Our 3 children loved swimming in the pool and in the river just behind the house. There is plenty of space for a familyof 6 inside and outside. We enjoyed many evenings outside while barbecuing and eating. Gianluca went over and above responding quickly to all of our requests. We loved it so much that we didn't want to leave!

  • Very beautiful place, we did not even expect it to be so beautiful !!! Near the house is a mountain river with waterfalls, mountains !!! Very nice house! Three floors. Everything is fine, good linen, clean bathrooms. And what a gorgeous grill in the yard, we bought meat at a local store and roasted it, dined in the yard in the open air, lanterns were burning nearby, it was very romantic! We were afraid that there would be mosquitoes in the evening, but there were only fireflies)))) very beautiful !!! The owner is wonderful benevolent. In general, if you want romance and spend time with gorgeous nature alone, then you are here !! Until now, we warmly remember that evening !!!

  • You can’t beat the price of this place. It’s very accurately described as being nestled in typical Tuscan countryside. Do not attempt without a car, but there is a bus and a small bodega nearby. In a great location for experiencing Tuscany and having your own space at the same time. Note that due to its more remote location, the WiFi can go in and out sometimes. The hosts were very accommodating and sweet! Great for longer stays, the listing is truly as advertised. Thanks Marco and Stefania!

  • Monica and Nico’s place is amazing. Beautiful view of Barga, especially during sunset. Monica and Nico are very nice warm hosts who will try to make you feel at home and show you the real Tuscany countryside experience. We joined them for dinner of several courses which was amazing. Also had delicious crepes for breakfast. There is parking on the premises and it’s only a short drive from the historic town of Barga. This was a great experience. Definitely recommend!

My place is close to the medieval hill-top town of Barga and to the mountains (Apuan Alps and Apennines). You’ll love my place because of the views, the rural location, the food, the history, and the mountains.
We like to meet people from all countries in the world. It helps if they can speak one of the following: Italian, English, German, Dutch, French, Spanish.
Barga, the Valle del Serchio, the Garfagnana, the Apuan Alps are probably the best kept secret of Tuscany. Few people know about this area, and here you are away from the beaten track (Firenze, Siena, etc.) and it would be difficult to find a single tourist trap!
  • The place was as nice as the town it was located near. The host were great at making you feel welcome, and town was great for walking and exploring.

  • We recommend without reservation this heavenly address. The accommodations are very nice, very clean, very functional, and located in a beautiful location, with breathtaking views. The welcome of Pietro and Maritje is warm, they are available and very friendly, they accompanied us perfectly for all the needs of our stay and the advice of walks and activities of Pietro are precious, we followed his ideas to discover the region the best way. A rare pearl.

  • Great Appartement with stunning view and a great host. We would recommend this place to everyone!

  • Pietro and Marijke are great hosts! The small apartment (Bellavista) with kitchen and terrace was sparkling clean and modern renovated. There were mosquito nets in front of the windows so that we could sleep very well and quietly despite many insects outside. If you want to hike, this is the place for you, Pietro has great tips and well-prepared hiking trails along the way, which you just have to follow. We were on the Monte Ferato and the Pania della Croce, both mountains that can easily compete with alpine peaks. The breakfast (15 euros per day for 2 persons) was very delicious and lovingly prepared with local products. Also for our beach day and has Marijke well supplied with beach towels and beach umbrella and tips for a natural, not crowded beach. The cute town of Barga is just 15 minutes away on a nice walk. Thank you Pietro and Marijke for your hospitality!

  • We had a fantastic time at Pietro's B&B. He made us delicious breakfasts, eaten on his terrace with beautiful views over Barga and across to the Apuan Alps. The room was perfect, with everything we needed, and the bed was very very comfortable. We slept like logs! Pietro was so helpful in suggesting walks for us to do, and even had some iteneraries and maps printed out which we could use. The area itself is stunning, and Barga is a lovely little town to explore. It's a little walk to and from Pietro's but we really liked it The fireflies created a little disco on the way home for us, and it was probably a good idea to burn off some calories from all the food and drink we were consuming! We loved Da Aristo for aperitivi and great salumi/formaggi plates, and had a really delicious 'last' meal at Ristorante Scacciaguai. I cannot recommend Pietro's place highly enough!

  • We had an amazing time at this place. Beautiful inside and out with a tremendous view of Barga. There is a beautiful trail nearby (short walk down the road) that takes you to towns above Barga and the walk into Barga is a short 20 minutes long. Our hosts were very helpful and welcoming and the breakfast is well worth the price. My only regret is staying only three nights, but we’ll certainly be back!

    Paul2018-04-28T00:00:00Z
  • The location is stunning with a beautiful view to Barga. The apartment is modern, comfortable and clean. Best of all is Pietro and Marijke's hospitality. They really made us feel at home. They had loads of good tips for things to see and do in the area and they made us the best breakfast with local produce and treats. We had a perfect stay and would love to be back some day!

    Kristian2018-04-21T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing view from terrace on the mountains. Close from a very beautiful town with nice stores and restaurants, even though, Barga town is hardly accessible if you're not in good shape (very steep). Appartement very clean and convenient. Our hosts have been very generous and helpful in answering our questions. I recommend

  • It's a nice flat in a small village. If you come here, you'll be rewarded by a nice view and fresh air. It's a prefect place to come down and have a break. The day I stayed here was a fest in the village and many people came here to share food, have a talk and stay together. Maddalena just invited me to come with her and I had a nice time there.

La Stalla Romantica - for the perfect romantic getaway or honeymoon - is a beautiful apartment with stunning views, created in the former stables. La Stalla Romantica has a large living room, with modern kitchen, eating area and sofa and a double bedroom with en suite shower room with walk-in shower. Both the living room and bedroom have French doors overlooking the view, which open onto a large (27m2) sun terrace with loungers and table and chairs for al fresco dining.
The kitchen is equipped with gas hob, microwave/convection oven/grill, washing machine, fridge freezer. There is a DVD/MP3 player and free wifi. La Stalla Romantica has efficient gas heating.
Coreglia Antelminelli is officially one of the 100 most beautiful villages in Italy. Here you can experience real Italian life, away from the tourist traps. The village has cafe bars, where you can breakfast on cappucini and pastries every day, or stop for an aperitivo later, two grocery stores - one 30 metres away, a pharmacy, a bank, a post office, a butcher, two hairdressers and several restaurants. There are beautiful churches: just opposite Our Place in Tuscany is a Romanesque church, San Martino, dating from the 9th Century. In the summer, there can be up to five festas in a week! These include the mediaeval Festa della Antico Borgo, with all sorts of activities and shows, culminating in an impressive firework display. There are some lovely walks around the village, on forest paths with beautiful mountain views, and on hiking trails in the Apennine Mountains behind the village or the Apuan Alps across the valley. You can watch the local football team play on the village grounds, and hear the roars, the singing, the hooting and the celebrations throughout the village if the team wins. Or if you fancy a game of tennis, just book the village court at the local bar. We can lend you some racquets.
  • If impeccable accommodations, off the beaten path are what you seek; Olivia’s home in the hills cannot be praised sufficiently. Perched on a quiet winding mountain road, it is an easy drive to Pisa, Barga, Lucca, and Viareggio. We honestly miss it already, and hope to return.

  • Very nice! We have a great rest!

    Marion2019-07-20T00:00:00Z
  • This place is fantastic. While spending 2 weeks traveling through Italy, this was a perfect place to relax and recharge. The hot tub was awesome and the views were even better! Olivia was very helpful and gave us plenty of recommendations for restaurants. We appreciated her place very much!

    Justin2019-07-08T00:00:00Z
  • Olivia’s place is perfect for those adventurous souls traveling by car in Tuscany. It’s a great getaway in a beautifully maintained (and safe) medieval town sitting high up the mountain. While visiting for a week we managed to hit up Barga (20 min), Lucca (40 min) , Pisa (1hr), Florence and Cinque Terre (2hr). The space itself was immaculate, and had everything we needed. Two doors down is a full grocery and another minute walk will get you all the espresso and aperitif if you could ever need. The hot tub is the best I’ve ever been in and the host was so welcoming and thoughtful. Parking was free and easy.

    Jason2019-05-22T00:00:00Z
  • Pictures do not do this place justice. Sitting in the hills with panoramic views of the mountains which can be enjoyed in a large hot tub. Modern apartment which was well equipped. Extra little touches from Olivia made our stay special. Would highly recommend staying here for as long as you can. Thanks for a great few days!

    Samuel2019-05-13T00:00:00Z
  • Olivia’s place is great. She welcomed us and gave us local tips. The apartment was lovely and she had left the essentials for a pasta too. The view is to die for. Looking forward to visit it again

  • Place is exactly as described, Olivia is very accommodating, and has useful tips about that part of the country. We followed her advice and recommendations and we had the best time of our lives.

    Wesam2019-04-29T00:00:00Z
  • We had such a great stay at Olivia’s place! A real local vibe in the middle of the mountains in the very pretty (very local) village of Coreglia Antelminelli. The apartment was lovely and the views incredible, we were pleased to be the only visitors which meant we had the hot tub to ourselves! Olivia was great and helpful before, during and after and gave us some great tips. We particularly liked the local towns of Lucca and Barga, and enjoyed the vineyard (podere concorri) and the caves (grotta del vento) but wouldn’t really recommend the beach town via reggio. Definitely recommend Olivia’s place if you are after a relaxing weekend away!

  • You've heard about these places, and this is it. A luxurious stay on a working farm in a mountaintop village with only one street, too narrow for cars. The view is snow-covered mountains of the Dolomites, and below, the valley farmed by Geoff. Two sides of the village are real cliffs. A pilgrimage route came through here, traversing ridges for safety, avoiding valleys, stopping at the church, built like a fortress. Geoff grows a wide variety of products, chosen for rarity, like spelt and kiwis. Mountaintop land is more productive than valley land, he told me, because overall it has a milder climate. He has gradually acquired more and more farm land, and is converting several houses into rentals for groups. Conversion is not easy as you can imagine, with all new utilities, windows, doors, insulation, floors, bathrooms, kitchens, roofs, the list goes on. Geoff tells stories, pick any subject, he has a story, which usually has a point to it, something he learned and is passing along. Dinner and breakfast were prepared, for a modest fee. Home grown where possible. One of the next groups will focus on food growing and preparation. Once arrived, I had no inclination to go back down into the valley, a slow descent, in first and second gear, any number of blind hairpin turns. Most of the way is a two lane road, much better than Ireland where I'd just come from. A jewel.

  • The location is unique, one of a kind. The best place we have been to in Italy. Geoff is very helpful, nice and communicative host. The place is high in the mountains, in a very small and pieceful village. We had the whole house for us. The place was very beautiful and clean. Good starting point to visit Piza, Lucca. Our stay there was fantastic.

  • Beautiful house inside the small village of Motrone, a place full of quietness and charm. Geoff, his wife and their dog have the most sincere hospitality (and some delicious breakfasts). I highly recommend it!

    Gabriele2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • We loved staying at the house and and our wonderfull conversations with Geoff. The environment is great, rural, quiet and beautiful. Geoff gave us the house with a full kitchen, 2 bath rooms and we enjoyed a full week of cooking, eating on our private terrace with great view, walking, swimming, relaxing. Geoff showed us his wonderfull biological farm, where he grows the food he prepares for guests if they do not want to cook themselves. Thank you again, we would love to come back!!

    Hermen2019-08-16T00:00:00Z
  • Geoff’s place is superb & I cannot recommend it highly enough. If you are flying into Pisa, Bologna or Florence it is very easy to reach Motrone and the Garfagnana mountains. The village and surrounding area are simply stunning. Hiking, hilltop towns, kayaking, caves so much to see & I wish I’d been able to stay longer. Geoff & Jenny are brilliant hosts & conversationalists, with a love of life and hard work that is truly an inspiration. If you have a few days to visit this region, just do it. Mozzafiato! Grazie Mille :-)

  • I could've never dreamed of such a uniquely precious, kind, delicious, and beautiful experience.

    Lea2019-07-14T00:00:00Z
  • This place is outstanding. Starting from breathtaking view from the window, up to Geoff's hospitality. They respected our gluten and lactose free needs and served delicious farm food every day. Definitely will come back :)

    Mateusz2019-07-05T00:00:00Z
  • We had an amazing stay at Jennys and Geoffs place in Motrone. Like you can see in the comments below you have to follow an adventourous road to reach it and you should either be by car or at least be a cyclist with a lot of stamina. Once you've got on the top of the mountain you will be rewarded with a stunning view over the Apuane Alps, beautiful old buildings and most important the incomparable hospitality of Jenny and Geoff. They make the difference to all the other AirBnB's we've been before. Having dinner with them, drinking their selfmade wine and the inspiring conversations is something you can't buy with money. Even if it was just for a few days it was a great experience. We hope to come back soon :)

  • This is a lovely, rustic, comfortable house in a very peaceful and private setting on a hill reached by a winding country road . It seemed more spacious than the photos showed. Having our own pool really made it for us - a luxury in the heat and lit at night for late swims. Yes, you do hear the occasional car go by on the road, but this didn't spoil it for us, as the privacy and otherwise calm, secluded setting was beautiful. Gorgeous bird song, fragrant air from the garden flowers (June), clean and well-equipped house; outdoor table-tennis; 10 minute drive to supermarket; good location for exploring the lovely countryside, villages, valleys and mountains and about 30 minutes to Lucca. Quick and excellent communication with host when needed. Would thoroughly recommend.

  • Breathtaking views and a beautiful villa full of character. Elena provided everything we needed and was quick to respond to our questions. The location is perfect, far enough away to feel like an escape while being a close drive to local restaurants, a supermarket and interesting places. The road is winding but in good condition and Elena’s directions were easy to follow. We’d definitely stay again.

    Cesca2019-05-30T00:00:00Z
  • It a beautiful property in a great location with wonderful views. Elena is a cheerful and wonderful hostess, always going out of the way to make us comfortable.. unfortunately, due to the cold weather the swimming pool couldn’t be used.. The downside is very weak WiFi.. There is a fantastic restaurant at nearby Barca, which was suggested and reserved by Elena for dinner.

Dog friendly structure, they offered us local products at km 0 as well as a relaxing whirlpool (with aperitif !!) and a decidedly unconventional experience!
