“Get your coffee fix at Pipers Cafe at the shopping center in Matarangi. They have great meals and delicious homemade cabinet food. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, they also do Takeaway meals, burgers and fish n chips for that ‘no cooking night’ and they also have a catering service. ”

Golf Course
“We highly recommend dinner at The Dunes Restaurant and Bar whether you’ve been golfing or not! It has has stunning views over the beautiful golf course and the amazing sunsets over nearby Coromandel Range. It’s the perfect spot for a beer after golf. The Dunes has an a la Carte menu, an outdoor pizza oven & they do terrific bar snacks. Great indoor and outdoor seating with big screen TVs to watch any sporting events on. ”

“Providing spectacular views over Matarangi, Kūaotunu and into the ranges behind on this walk through regenerating forest. The forest has been enhanced with a native tree planting program since 2010. Head to Goldfields Drive at the start of Matarangi and walk up the Old Bluff Road now only open to walkers & bikers. The 4.7km return walk is mostly an easy gradient & if it’s hot, jump in at Rings Beach for a cool down swim before returning to Matarangi. ”

“Matarangi peninsula stretches 4.5km and offers a picture perfect white sandy beach which provides safe swimming all year round. The harbour also offers swimming, jet boating, fishing and bird watching, with an upgraded boat ramp, boat parking and picnic area. There are only a handful of north-facing beaches in New Zealand, Matarangi with its straight coastline is one of them. The setup is unique because it receives all day sun throughout the seasons and this sandy beach without rocks is also safe for swimming and surfing. Brilliant beach for walking & dogs are allowed off leash in the morning & evenings. Occupying the scenic end of the sand spit is "The Dunes", a Bob Charles-designed championship eighteen-hole golf course. The spectacular par 73, 18 hole golf course hugs the beach with sensational views toward the Mercury Islands, & Omara’s at The Dunes Clubhouse has a great indoor outdoor bar & restaurant with an outdoor pizza oven catering for golfers and non-golfers alike. The small shopping center with a 4 Square supermarket, wine shop, cafe & hardware/gift shop serves visitors well. With 5 Double tennis courts dotted around the peninsula a great game of tennis is within walking distance. Matarangi is close to many other Coromandel gems with New Chums Beach and Cathedral Cove & Hotwater Beach in easy driving distance.”

“There are lots of places to access the 4km sandy beach in Matarangi with lots of paths leading through the streets but if you head down Kenwood Drive to the end you will end up at the 'Village Green' with carpark, playground, toilets and a public free to use BBQ with access to the beach. A great place to base yourself for a day on the beach.”

“This is one of my favourite walks in Matarangi - walking around the spit. Beautiful views over the entrance to the harbour, along the golf course and through the woods. To do the loop walk from the Villa all the way to the wharf and back it is probably about 5-6km. At the end of the spit is the conservation area where native endangered Doterels are being protected. Please take note of the signs. There is a map in the Villa showing the walk but head towards the Northern end of the beach for access to the path that runs along beach and just keep following the path. It is quicker to walk back to the villa via the roads once you have reached the wharf.”

“Just an 8 to 10 minute walk from the Villa for the quickest access to the beach. There are lots of paths leading to and from the beach so you never know where you will end up walking if you choose a different route.”
