Places to stay in Marykirk
Traditional & relaxed B&B in the 16th century Scottish tower wing of our family home. 2 bedrooms for 4 people over two floors with large bathroom and small sitting room with tv. Full breakfast included.
The castle dates from the 13th century and is full of original features but has been extensively improved for modern living! It is an excellent location for exploring the area or for business in Aberdeen or even a wedding at one of the excellent local venues. The property is about 45 minutes’ drive south of Aberdeen off the main A90. Edinburgh is 2 hours to the south. Royal Deeside is about 20 minutes away, across the Cairn O’Mount pass. Our main guest room is a bright room, overlooking parkland, on the second floor of the L-shaped tower built in 1531. It has a superking sized bed and there is plenty of storage with a wardrobe & chest of drawers. A cosy sitting room with TV is adjacent. Up a further flight of the impressive stone spiral stair is the bathroom and a further guest room, with twin beds. The bathroom, for exclusive use by guests, has a power shower and bath. All linen, towels and basic toiletries will be provided. Duvets and pillows are feather/down, but synthetic may be available. A hairdryer is available, as well as an iron & ironing board. There are tea and coffee making facilities and a fridge with ice box. White waffle weave robes can be used for the short walk between the bedrooms and bathroom. On the ground floor is a Billiard room with full sized billiard / snooker table and selection of board games which guests are welcome to use by separate arrangement. On inclement days or chilly evenings we would be happy to light a fire. A full breakfast is provided in our dining room, depending on requirements. A selection of cereals, fruit juices and yoghurt are all available, with home made bread and preserves. A simple cooked breakfast can be provided. For larger parties there are other rooms available by arrangement. Reasonable Wi-Fi is available throughout the house limited in places by the thickness of the walls!
The house is located in a tranquil and quiet rural setting midway between the villages of Fettercairn and Laurencekirk in the fertile farming area of the Howe of the Mearns. River and woodland walks are on the door step Fettercairn has an award winning distillery with visitor centre. Slightly further afield over the Cairn O'Mount road, is Royal Deeside with Balmoral Castle and other attractions. The property is not far from the coastal towns of Stonehaven, Catterline, Johnshaven and Montrose. There are superb beaches at St Cyrus. The nearest golf courses are in Edzell, Auchenblae, Montrose and Stonehaven. Carnoustie and St Andrews are within an hour’s drive. There is an abundance of walks and cycling for all abilities and interests on our doorstep. The coast to coast walk from Fort William passes through Glen Esk en route to Montrose. The area has a number of excellent hotels, restaurants and coffee shops for eating out.
  • Such a fantastic weekend away in a Castle! Hosts went above and beyond to ensure the stay was wonderful. Loved the tour of the castle, our room, a great breakfast both continental and cooked. Made good use of the games room and enjoyed coming back to a fire of an evening. Hosts were easy to talk to, and quick responses through airbnb when I messaged. I can imagine it would be so beautiful in the summer time and hope we can return so we can get out in the gardens.

  • This house was more than we expected. If I could give it a 100/10 I would. Clean, comfortable, nice touches from the owner, and spacious. This place would be absolutely great for groups. With two living areas, everyone could do their own thing. Would definitely stay again.

  • What an amazing place❤️

    Dave2020-03-19T00:00:00Z
  • The Tower is an amazing venue, and Dag had left a fully stocked fridge with gin and whisky included! Although the weather was wet and windy (Storm Dennis was raging outside) the tower was warm and comfortable. The downstairs kitchen/sitting room/dining room was very comfortable with amazing views and the copper bath in the upstairs bathroom was a very nice touch. We weren't that impressed by Montrose, but there are plenty of places nearby to visit and we had a very enjoyable weekend. We hope to return when the weather is better.

    Briony2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • The most amazing space, every detail has been thought of and we felt immediately at home. Dag welcomed us with a wee dram of whisky then gave us a brief tour before leaving us to our own devices. Could not recommend highly enough!

    Georgie2020-02-10T00:00:00Z
  • Dag's place is amazing and he couldn't have been more helpful. He even sent on the bits we left behind. Difficult to find fault with anything.

    Gareth2020-01-21T00:00:00Z
  • The tower is exceptional! What an amazing place and Dag is equally as great a host. We had everything we needed for a very memorable New Years. We’ll certainly be back!

    Arthur2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • Dag was a Superhost. Excellent communication, quick and easy check in, lovely comfortable accommodation. Would highly recommend!

    Louise2019-12-29T00:00:00Z
  • From the very first interaction with Dag, I knew this was the place for us (young couple celebrating a birthday + our French Bulldog). The property is amazing, you will not want to leave! Any plans you have may get swept to one side if you are staying here, you will get suckered in by its warmth and charm. We did not turn on the TV once as there were so many more interesting things to do/read/look at. The feeling of peace and tranquility even overtook our dog, who would rather sleep in the bed that Dag provided over his own! Everything we could wish for was provided, and more. A magnificent property with a wonderful host, 10/10, 5 stars. We are already thinking of an excuse to visit again. Thanks again, Dag!

    Georgina2019-12-17T00:00:00Z
  • Exceptional host and property. Highly recommend this beautiful unique property. Thoroughly spoiled by the host with kind little touches and hospitality. We will return for sure. Place was spotless and we had everything we needed to hand . Bed was so so comfortable and the old vintage bath was amazing. Everyone should experience this fantastic place.

  • Superb location, lovely flat inside. We arrived late so the entrance hall was pitch dark so needed a torch to see the key safe but easy to find. Everything is in the apartment for you, washing machine and great facilities. Although there was instruations for the hot water I did not have any during my stay, I turned on the timer but still no hot water for washing dishes so had to boil the kettle, the shower is electric so that was perfect.

Newly renovated 1 bed apartment. This compact modern style property is a ground floor flat with en-suite shower room and living room with kitchenette. The living space is fully furnished with sofa bed, TV, DVD player, electric LED fire and dining table. Free WIFI, microwave, iron and hairdryer all included. The property is perfectly located within a 3 min walk to town centre and train station. Breakfast roll and coffee/tea also included with this airbnb from local subway restaurant 4 min walk.
This is the perfect cosy space for any couple visiting the area on holiday or for the weekend. Also ideal for work related travel. 3 minute walk from the train station and town centre. We would recommend a maximum of 3 adult guests as the apartment is quite small. However the space could accommodate 2 adults and 2 children.
Close enough to walk to the local amenities but far enough away from the town centre to avoid noise, this cosy apartment is in a quiet area with easy access to the main roads.
  • Easy access, good location, simple, clean, good sleep. Altogether a nice place.

  • Forbes place is terrific if visiting Montrose. Located close to town but very quiet a perfect place to stay.

    Jodi2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • The apartment is well located for the town centre but the on street parking can be a bit tight at times. The space is quite compact as described but Forbes has made the best of the available space and provided all that you would need for a few days away. Everything was lovely and clean with fresh smelling bedding and towels.

  • Clean, cosy and comfortable apartment. A few minutes walk to shops, the beach and an interesting little museum. Very easy check in and out via friendly staff at the local Subway restaurant. Amazing value that a free breakfast at Subway is included each day! We would highly recommend this accommodation and will definitely stay here again when we are in the area.

    Laura2020-02-08T00:00:00Z
  • Stayed at Forbes' place during a work visit to Montrose in February. Very clean on arrival, homely feel to the house. Perfect space for a single person or couple. Will be staying again and would happily recommend.

  • Forbes' place is very much as advertised. Very clean. Very comfortable bed. Excellent kitchen facility. Very convenient to town. We loved relaxing there and watching the TV after spending most of the daylight hours out on the beach.

  • Our stay was full of amenities from Elsie and her husband which made it much more pleasant than expected. We stayed with our dog and the area around is just great for dogs. We didn't have a car but Elsies husband was so kind to offer us daily lifts into town. Even with bad weather we could enjoy our stay with board games and DVDs (which Elsie provided).

  • This is a real gem. Quirky cottage with a history. Ideal as a base, but also a great space for reading and writing for work or pleasure. Hosts could not have been more helpful, friendly and informative. The location is quiet, beautiful, remote and windswept, and has lots of historical interest etched on the landscape. Footpaths, lanes, woods and beaches - my dog thought he had gone to heaven.

    Pamela2019-11-06T00:00:00Z
  • We had a fantastic short break, the cabin was very comfortable and warm and we had everything we needed for our stay. The views were incredible and we were very lucky with the weather. We spent our days beachcombing for beautiful little semi-precious stones and exploring the area roundabout. The sea air did us all good and the kids enjoyed going sea fishing in the evening with their Daddy just down the hill from the cabin. Elsie and Bruce were very hospitable and welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed, they are lovely hosts and we hope to return again one day as there is more to explore yet!

  • Wow - what a special place, with two special owners. The Cabin was well equipped and spacious. Lots of small thoughtful touches made it amazing - even the children commented on the hospitality. The sea views are perfect and we loved the short walk down to the beach too. Our only regret was that we didn’t have longer and to be able to chat to you more. Thank you for having us.

Very eclectic group of houses on our street from townhouses to the old style building with garages underneath. The whole street is classed as a conservation area and being a dead end with only 10 separate addresses its very quite an neighbourly.

    Robin2019-04-18T00:00:00Z
  • Great B&B in the centre of Montrose. The second ‘B’ (the breakfast) was outstanding with all local produce for a full Scottish Breakfast. Also all the jams, marmalades, honey and peanut butter was also from local suppliers. Not many Airbnb’s include a breakfast so if there was a ranking list of breakfasts offered (in the booking price) this is definitely in the top 3 (if not No 1). The room had a nice shower room en suit (which I do not think was shown in the pictures, but it was very modern and nice, with plenty of soaps, shower gel and conditioner. However, as I now live in the Caribbean, I have lost my Scottish toughness and found the room to be cold (in a windy March). I even went to see Montrose play football the next day and also found that very cold, yet there were local youngsters with just flimsy tops on and they were fine! I have previously stayed at the three leading hotels in Montrose but this B&B will certainly be on my list for my next visit.

  • Two guys with a natural feel for guests needs and wants. Nothing was too much bother and the wee touches everywhere just adds to the relaxed and chic surroundings.

  • Lovely space up in the attic. If you have pets I would highly recommend! Gordon went out of the way to leave dog biscuits and bedding for our pups which was so thoughtful. Nice tea and coffee amenities but oh my goodness the breakfast is the best I have experienced! AMAZING!

  • This is my first ever review. I have travelled on business for over 25 years and stayed in Hyatt Carlton, Marriott, etc., but they don't compare to this place. If you're lucky enough to get to stay, consider yourself privileged. Kevin and Adele are super hosts and were super attentive to my requirements. Best place I've ever stayed at!!

  • A beautiful and charming place. Caravan with all the arrangements (nothing is missing) We will definitely go back there!

    Marta2019-12-26T00:00:00Z
  • The accommodation was big and clean. The heating worked fast, so it was very pleasant. What I personally less liked: it is a Karavan (as you can see in the photo), but I have imagined it more like a beach cottage (have already spent many in such a). Also, the Karavan was with many such others in a Karavan Park behind the city and not (as one might expect) rather on the beach. The city is very boring and to my taste quite uninviting and drab. However, there is a great bakery and the beach is beautiful and perfect for long walks.

    Elena2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • The caravans are very clean and stylish and in a lovely location . Stuart is a very nice person and very approachable

    Peter2019-10-04T00:00:00Z
  • St Cyrus is a lovely location the beach is amazing, our toddler twins and dogs loved it. Chalet is very clean and has everything you need. The shower was great, and plenty cooking essentials. A dog run area to let them off the lead was fab, and the grounds were clean and not over crowded which really suited us. Great short stay overall.

    Lorraine2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful dog friendly caravan in a lovely location. The site is very clean and spacious, and everyone we spoke to was friendly. Bonus was the dog run at the back of the site! It was great to be able to walk down to the beach and local shop, and explore the area. We’ll definitely be back again soon! Thank you for having us x

Close to beautiful St Cyrus beach and convenient for Montrose and Stonehaven, you’ll love staying in our room, overlooking the garden.
St Cyrus is just ten minutes from Montrose and twenty minutes from Stonehaven. Our cottage overlooks the church and Victorian school and is on the edge of the nature reserve, with its beautiful sandy white beach. With traditional cottage decor and lovely views throughout the year of the garden, we offer a quiet space to relax. Exclusive use of a shower room and a private sitting room with fridge freezer is also available. Wifi. This space has its own entrance. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, business travellers and young families. Use of a travel cot or sofa bed for additional guests is available on request.
You will really enjoy staying next to our beautiful "St Cyrus National Nature Reserve". If you like birds RSPB Fowlsheugh a little up the cost is well worth a visit. Lots of nice places to eat (great seafood, fish and chips, strawberry teas etc). St Cyrus has a cafe with award winning cakes, a pub and hotel which serves evening meals, a shop and park. Neighbouring village Johnshaven has an excellent seafood restaurant and further up the coastal road in Gourdon there is the famous Quayside fish and chip shop. Nearby Montrose has all the amenities you would expect of a town. Lots to do in the area, a superb place to enjoy the beautiful Mearns and coastal areas made famous in Gassic Gibbon's Scots Quair.
  • Couldn't have been more pleased with our choice to stay here for two nights, cosy, kind and thoughtful. The beach is so close and absolutely stunning. Well worth staying and would 100% recommend!

  • KIrtsty's place is a real gem, cosy self contained space, very comfortable, and blissfully quiet, Kirsty is a great host, welcoming and friendly, highly recommended and hope to visit again in the future.

  • Wonderful location close to St Cyrus beach. Super friendly hosts. Lovely cottage style accommodation.

    Peter2019-08-16T00:00:00Z
  • The annexe is clean and comfortable, and within easy walking distance of the beach, though down some steep stairs. Kirsty was very warm and welcoming, and quickly made us feel at home! She is an amazing cook as well, she arranged an incredible evening meal (at an extra charge), and was happy to cater for vegetarians. There is a fridge and microwave handy for lunch/breakfast or a cookout on the beach, but no cooking facilities. We really enjoyed our stay!

    Lydia2019-08-05T00:00:00Z
  • Kirsty and John's place is sizeable three room annex to their main home. It contains a bedroom, bathroom, and a sitting room, and looks out onto a large garden on one side and the family's play space and yard on the other. It has its own access and is separate from the family space. The area is wonderfully quiet and access to the beach is a short walk away, on the other side of the large church. Note that the beach is 200-300 feet below the clifftop area. There is a path down from that point, or, if one drives a couple of miles down the road, one can access the beach from much lower down. We didn't have much opportunity to interact with Kirsty as she had other obligations at the time, but John was friendly and helpful and we recommend their accommodation highly.

    William (Bill)2019-07-07T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely stay here in St. Cyrus. Hosts were really welcoming and relaxed which made us feel at home straightaway. The annex offers everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Lots of thoughtful touches such as good toys for our 2 year old son. Would definitely recommend!

    Ruth2019-06-30T00:00:00Z
  • A wonderful place very close to the beach! Cosy and clean. Overall a great stay.

  • We stayed at the flat for the weekend whilst attending a party in Brechin. Douglas couldn’t have been more helpful from initial communication, providing a travel cot for our little one, helping us park our car, providing us with taxi numbers, giving us bread, milk, tea, coffee etc, finding us a corkscrew and thoroughly entertaining our toddler with a visit to see the dog upstairs. A lovely flat super clean that is clearly well looked after. We will be back on our next visit to Brechin next year. Very much recommended.

  • We absolutely loved our stay here, it was perfect for us and the kids. The pod was bigger than we expected and the hot tub was amazing. Check in was great even when we arrived later than expected! The pod had everything we needed, plenty towels and bedding for us all. Nice and cosy and the park for the kids was brilliant too! We would certainly come back!

  • Me, my husband and our dog have just returned from two nights at the Glamping Pod. It was great and we would definitely recommend it. We didn’t arrive until 8pm on our first day but this wasn’t a problem for our hosts. We were greeted warmly and shown to the pod. The pod is beautiful, it’s decorated to a really high standard and has everything you need for a home from home. It doesn’t have WiFi but we knew this when booking. The hot tub was a lovely addition and it feels really private as it is under a covered area on the decking. Also there is a fenced in dog area if you want to let your dog off the lead and run around safely. Great visit, we’d highly recommend staying.

  • We had a perfect family weekend away at Lorna's lodge. The location is fabulous, with beautiful views. Lots of different things to do and places to see nearby (recommend Lunan Bay - beautiful). Lodge itself was clean and had everything you would require. The hot tub area outside is also beautifully done. Overall great stay and we will be back!

  • Lorna's Cabin is in an excellent location with a great view over the surrounding countryside. It is peaceful, yet easy to reach local amenities and attractions. The cabin itself is of a very high standard, very well furnished with stylish touches all around. We found it a very relaxing stay, aided by the hot tub which was very clean and well maintained. We would highly recommend a stay at Lorna's cabin, and hope to return in the future.

  • Dorothy's residence is in a quiet neighborhood, close to town and beach. Everything is within walking distance. Free parking is available at your doorstep. Everything in the apartment is clean and the beds are of good quality. The house is heated by gas stove, which is located in the closet in the bedroom. It is a good idea to turn it off at night if you are noise sensitive. You can also easily hear the upper floor go on the floor, you just have to get used to it if you are noise sensitive as I am. But it is a lovely apartment, with a cozy conservatory, and we were happy to stay there.

We saw red squirrels, buzzards , rabbits , beautiful butterflies and I was very excited to spot a yellowhammer! A truly idyllic setting !

  • We didn’t know much about this part of Scotland and afterwards we have to say: such a beautiful region, such a cosy cottage with a big garden for children to play. We have to come back... to the beach in St. Cyrus, to the northernmost outdoor pool in Stonehaven and to Aberdeen. This cottage is located close to a forest and a peaceful place to be.

    Torsten2019-08-10T00:00:00Z
  • Comfortable, stylish country cottage, with great outdoor space for young and old. Lots to do nearby, fantastic scenery - no wonder we've been back!

    Donald2019-07-27T00:00:00Z
  • This is our second time staying at the wonderful house. The hosts, Kevin and Erika, are so welcoming and a bottle wine and box of fudge was waiting for us as we arrived. The house itself is beautifully fitted and presented. Super comfy beds and a fantastic kitchen space to cook and socialise in. My two kids live the attic space for hiding away in to play with their toys, and their dad loved the table tennis table in the garage. The garden and woods provide so much space, freedom and adventure for us all to explore and have fun in. The garden is a wildlife haven. This week were lucky to see a mink, a hedgehog, and lots of friendly red squirrels and bunny rabbits. It is also the perfect base for exploring Angus. We loved visiting the wonderful St Cyrus beach, swimming in the ‘invigorating’ North Sea, playing in the sand, spotting peregrine falcons and buying fresh fish for dinner from the fishing village of Gourdon. We had a great time too at the fab outdoor (heated) pool at Stonehaven and a foody delight eating at the But n’ Ben restaurant at Auchmithie. However, it’s hard to beat the hand cut chips and freshly cooked haddock from the the Lournie chipper at Laurencekirk. To the other side of the house, we also explored the hidden gems of the Angus Glens. We climbed up Mount Battock and all the way round the back of Loch Lee at the top of Glenesk. The house and surroundings is the perfect destination for a family holiday. I can’t recommend it enough.

  • Lovely apartment, better than pics. Beautiful views, great location. Ewan was very generous leaving food and extras- thank you.

    Mandy2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • My partner and I stayed here with our son over Xmas. Its a great wee flat - spacious, well equipped, spotlessly clean, with amazing views to the beach and the bedrooms have lovely rooftop views over the town. Ewan was a great host. Definitely hope to return again.

    David2019-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • Montrose is a great place to visit and the flat is spot on. Close to the beach, so there are stunning views. The flat was lovely and clean and everything you need is provided. It is about 15 minutes walk to the train station, and there are 3 flights of stairs to the flat, but this is specified in the flat' s description. Hence the view is so fabulous. Ewan was a great host, with excellent communication. Good value too. Highly recommended.

    Caroline2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • Great loft apartment, spectacular views over the North Sea and Montrose. Ewan provided us with tea/coffee/milk and even bread and butter and the apartment was equipped with everything you need for a beach stay in Scotland. We loved it. Thanks Ewan, we will definitely book again with you. A bonus was the Kaiser Chiefs were playing a concert just along the front from the apartment, which we watched for free, with our kids.

    Alison2019-08-17T00:00:00Z
  • Great flat. Close to Montrose beach .... which is beautiful.

    Fhiona2019-08-14T00:00:00Z
  • The stunning views in all directions from Ewan's flat are well worth the climb. The stairs are fine if you just take your time - my 84 year old mother managed ok! The flat itself is bright, clean and comfortable with everything you could need for a great wee break. The location is superb too, just minutes from the beach in one direction and the town in the other, and some good restaurants nearby. Thanks very much, Ewan and Montrose.

  • This is a real adventure! We had so much fun being off grid even though it was mud season! We had everything we needed and it was a much-needed escape. The land is gorgeous and I even spotted a red squirrel! Lesley is a fantastic host and we loved her stories. We hope to come back again soon <3

    Hazel2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • A wonderful ‘back to nature ‘ retreat! Lesley’s place is wonderful! We had a truly relaxing time. Amazing to see a red squirrel on the nuts! Loved getting the fire going and relaxing on the veranda looking out into the woods. The hut is amazingly well equipped considering its off-grid location. There are solar powered usb chargers for phones and two USB lamps. The al-fresco shower was fun and worked fine! Lesley was lovely and really helpful, showed us Chantrelle mushrooms that we then collected and cooked! She also suggested good walks nearby. Would thoroughly recommend. Loved it!

    Rachel2019-08-18T00:00:00Z
  • We absolutely loved everything about our stay here. From the welcome we received, to the beautiful woodland and the wildlife, the Dowrie wood is a truly magical place. Lesley was so welcoming and such an inspiring person. If you are after a relaxing, back to nature experience, this is the place for you. We will definitely be back!

    Sarah2019-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • This place is magical! Ray and Lesley have created an inspiring space which we are grateful to have been able to share. They are brilliant hosts, always quick to respond and couldn’t have made us feel more welcome. Even Toby the dog came to hang out with us one night. We came here with our 2 year old boy and we all had a ball! The hut is quirky yet has everything you need and more. We loved exploring the area and discovering all the wee sculptures and creations that were dotted about. The hens are a special touch and the eggs delicious. The poly tunnel is amazing! It was such a nice trip, in nature, away from the noise of modern living. Nothing quite beats cooking on a fire or having an open air shower. We all need to spend more time appreciating the simple things and stop taking life for granted ❤️

    Heather2019-08-08T00:00:00Z
  • A very simple, special and natural space in the middle of a beautiful wood. The cabin was very comfortable, cozy and relaxing. We loved it.

    Joanne2019-08-06T00:00:00Z
  • Lesley and Ray are amazing hosts. They have a lovely place. Both our kids loved being in the thick of nature. We will be back soon 😀

    Russell2019-08-04T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely location.. Very relaxing.. Perfect to recharge your batteries.

    Nikki2019-07-29T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent off grid living experience. Ideal for nature lovers and hikers alike! Or do what we did...take the children to allow them to experience the great outdoors, whilst giving them a new perspective on modern day living. Providing awareness of how wasteful we are capable of being and how easy it is to turn that around! Ray and Lesley are lovely hosts and valuable sources of information ; especially if you wish to cause less of an impact on our beautiful world whilst making some incredible memories!

Breakfast was very enjoyable in the large kitchen and Gordon has thought of everything you might need. We can’t speak highly enough about this little gem in Montrose. Great value too! There was even a space to store our bikes!
