The Den is a unique space within the Lake District - a Scandinavian style BBQ cabin. A large BBQ pit in the centre to sit around provides a cosy relaxing evening space, and a place to cook! WiFi, Fridge, Microwave, Kettle & Nespresso. Bedding provided, and a heated blanket! 8 minutes by car to Windermere, 5 minutes to Kendal. Easy access to a bus stop and cycle lane. Dales Way very close by. A camping-type toilet and sink (hot & cold water) next to the cabin. Dogs welcome £5/night extra.
Set in 2/3rds of an acre of beautiful gardens with private countryside views. Off street private and secure parking is provided. Toilet is located next to The Den in a separate shed. The sink has running hot & cold drinking water. Please note there are not shower facilities, but the sink with running water is suitable for taking a daily wash.
We are about half way between Kendal and Windermere. The main cycle lane into the Lake District is directly across the road, as is the Dales Way walking path. The Den is in a semi-rural setting with views to the surrounding countryside. For clarity's sake, during busy rush hours there is some traffic noise from the road, but evenings and nights are typically quiet. Please note that we are not the Windermere Camping Site, despite the AirBnB map showing it close by!
  • Very nice experience! Very nice cosy place ♥️

  • Very accommodating. We really enjoyed our stay here. It made our trip to the Lakes that extra bit special. Thank you for the recommendations Yassmine for where to go we enjoyed everything that you suggested. The room and facilities were fantastic. We were also very pleasantly surprised to meet the Shetland Ponies and Gusto! I highly recommend!

  • The Den is a beautiful made space and holds the most relaxing atmosphere. Matt and Yassmine have thought of everything, providing guests with charcoal, WiFi, tea and coffee, etc. They are also such friendly and responsive hosts! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the den and would recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable, quirky place (the bbq is an amazing feature). Thank you both!

  • Booked for Xmas present for my girlfriend and what a great choice I made. The hut was absolutely stunning from the moment we arrived. Location is also accessible from a number of viewpoints and amenities. The fire pit is a lovely touch where we made dinner. Shetland pony’s were a nice little surprise too. The hit was slightly cold, however to be expected in Feb. Highly recommend staying in this beautiful hut and we will be back!

  • This is a lot of fun, even in winter. Just be sure to bring enough coal if it's cold and rainy to use not only for the bbq but also to keep warm. The heated blanket is a great idea. The room was spotless and very well organised. Bbqing inside works amazing! We had some perfectly cooked steaks. The toilet (no shower) is outside of the cabin, in rainy/snowy weather it's less then ideal. But this is communicated in the ad so not a complaint, just a heads up for people checking this location out.

There is a superb supermarket 2 minutes walk away that stocks a wide variety of local and specialist produce and has an excellent cheese counter, deli section and off licence. Kendal's bustling high street is one minute's walk away where you'll find plenty of shops, a library, the post office and several banks. There's a Costa on the main high street and Caffe Nero is in the marketplace. It's worth exploring Kendal's historic yards where you'll find many of our more individual retailers and businesses. There are plenty of places to explore with lovely parks (Kendal Castle, Serpentine Woods and Noble's Rest) and pleasant walks along the river Kent right on our doorstep. There is a street market every Wednesday and Saturday and a farmer's market once a month. EATERIES AND CAFÉS WE RECOMMEND: CASTLE DAIRY Visit castledairy.co.uk to book. The Castle Dairy Restaurant and Art Gallery offers a unique dining experience in Kendal’s oldest inhabited building. Staffed by Kendal College apprentices and watched over by chef Robert Stacey, the restaurant provides exceptional food, surrounded by local art work, in a truly unusual setting. • Caryn’s place is absolutely stunning and we feel lucky to have had the chance to stay here. It’s a lovely big space, very arty and peaceful - lovely big bath, comfortable sofa, smart tv, coffee machine and Caryn even baked us some bread and left yoghurts, orange juice and milk in the fridge. It was perfect. The house is right in the heart of Kendal so despite the rain we found lots to do and there is a lovely pub at the end of the road. If you are driving there and parking your car just be aware it’s extremely tight and narrow on the road so opt for a smaller car if possible! Thank you Caryn for having us we’d love to visit again one day. Mick & Caroline

  • My wife and I enjoyed a fantastic late January stay at Colour House. The apartment is as impressive, arty and spacious as it looks in the pictures and the additional touches of local produce, home baked bread, tea, coffee etc. were great. The location in the heart of Kendal is excellent and we found the buses provided a cheap and easy way to explore into the Lakes, whether to Windermere, Ambleside or Cartmel for its restaurants (the latter a short taxi ride from Grange over Sands). Caryn was a perfect and very welcoming host. Very friendly, quick to reply to questions pre visit and asked us if we wanted anything from the shops during our stay. The weekend was to mark a milestone birthday and provided great memories for us. We will definitely stay again if/when we revisit the area. Thank you Caryn!

  • We spent a very relaxing few days at the colour house. Caryn is a wonderfully thoughtful host. The colour house is a great base to be able to explore Kendal and the Lakes.

  • I’ll start with one word! Wow! What a fantastic space! Our little family trio had the most wonderful little trip to Kendal for a two night stay in in winter! Caryn was so welcoming and made our stay really comfortable! To finish off our break we woke to a picture perfect view of snowy rooftops and chimneys on the Sunday! Made it very difficult to leave!! Thanks for having us Caryn! Looking forward to booking with you again in the new year!! Kim, James abs little Ralph x x x

  • Huge warm, homely but stylish living room with WiFi, big TV, DVDs, Netflix, books, magazines and games galore, lots of sofas and pouffes on which to sit or sprawl and a fine view over the rooftops of Kendal to the fells beyond. Free standing bath, double sink, lovely soap and shampoo.. Mattress had a bit of a dip but otherwise comfortable, hot water bottles provided. Caryn was an excellent host, providing breakfast, homemade bread, flowers, washing up our pots and even asking us if we needed any shopping doing! With a extra supplement for my partner on top of cleaning fees etc. the place was a bit more than I'd normally pay for somewhere without cooking facilities but a lovely treat for Christmas.

  • Great space, really unique! Fantastic hospitality, some really thoughtful touches like homemade bread and mince pies. Very flexible with check-in and out times, very welcoming with quick responses.

My stone terrace cottage is located in one of Kendal's conservation areas and 5 minutes walk to the station, town centre and the river Kent. The cottage is a cosy, quiet, relaxing space with an enclosed wildlife garden at the back of the house.
The house was built in 1820 as an old weavers house apparently. I renovated it 8 years ago with an open plan kitchen and lounge with wood burning stove. The kitchen has an fan oven and gas hob, fridge and freezer, kettle, toaster and microwave, and everything you need to cook meals or enjoy a take-out. There is a small kitchen table and chairs that you can get out and use in the house or for breakfast in the garden. The log burner is a treat in winter with a free supply of wood. There is Wifi and a selection of books and maps, allowing you to make the most of your stay. The bedroom is a good size with a comfortable double bed, wardrobe (with full length mirror inside), chest of draws and chair. The bathroom has a bath/shower combination. The enclosed garden out the back gets the sun in the morning till early evening in the summer so you can sit have breakfast or dinner and watch the bees buzzing around wildflowers, pick herbs for cooking or alpine strawberries for breakfast if there are any left :) There's bike (or general kit) storage out the back or in the cellar should you need it. Also bike cleaning facilities. You will have a parking permit for the local area so can park for free either outside the house or nearby. It does get full late afternoon when residents come back from work so you might have to park in one of the adjacent streets. its fine to load outside the door though. Everyone does it.
Kendal is an old market town situated in what i think is one of the most beautiful parts of the country – the Lake District. Its also within 30 minutes drive of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, making it a perfect base for outdoor sport addicts, walkers and sightseers....

Character cottage in the heart of Bowness. Walking distance from all amenities , yet set back in a private location behind trees. With parking and lovely garden this is the perfect place to explore the beautiful surroundings.
FOXGLOVE COTTAGE IN WINDERMERE LAKE DISTRICT Foxglove Cottage lies in Bowness, one of the Lake Districts most popular villages, with its many shops, inns, cafes and restaurants leading down to the beautiful lake Windermere. Foxglove cottage is the perfect place to enjoy the outstanding natural beauty and to walk to local restaurants for a spot of dinner and maybe glass of wine or two. The end property of three traditional lakeland cottages, Foxglove Cottage is a short walk from Bowness village and bay and yet remains private, hidden behind trees and shrubs. A shared drive leads up to the cottages and Foxglove is on the far end with lovely private garden to the rear. The side entrance leads into the well equipped kitchen/dining room. A single step leads up to the oak beamed sitting room. The room has comfy sofa and arm chairs, and , of course , the obligatory log burning stove. A most comfortable and cosy place to relax after a long walk in the beautiful surrounding area. A narrow staircase leads to the upstairs floor, on the landing is the first bathroom with bath and overhead shower. A few more steps lead onto the main landing off which there are two bedrooms, one the master double, with en-suite whirlpool bath and overhead shower, the second a pretty twin bedroom. At the rear of the cottage there is a lovely private garden, surrounded by shrubs and trees. there is a dining area where you can perhaps have a barbecue and enjoy a glass of rose in the spring/summer. This is a perfect place to stay for either couples or a small family, where the amazing area of the Lake district can be easily explored and just a short walking distance you can pop out to wine and dine in the evening before returning to a cosy relaxing cottage. The Location The linked towns of Bowness and Windermere lie east of Lake Windermere, where Bowness is at the waters edge, with the town of Windermere set about a half mile away above the lake. Each is a busy community of shops, cafes, restaurants and attractions, serving both the local community and our visitors to the Lake District. Perhaps the biggest attraction is the bay at Bowness, a sweeping crescent of waterfront and adjoining parkland, where you can enjoy a walk by the shore or find a quite place to picnic. At the bay you will find the piers and the famous Windermere steamers, which offer boat trips up and down the ten - mile reach of the lake. Here you can also hire rowing boats and motor powered boats, which can be taken by the hour to explore the lake and it islands for yourself. Other popular attractions are the World of Beatrix Potter, the Windermere Steam Boat Museum and a little south of Bowness the Blackwell Arts and Crafts house, one of the most important surviving houses from the turn of the 20th century. The house is a superb example of the Arts and Crafts movement architecture, where it occupies a stunning position overlooking Windermere and is open to the public as a gallery for craft and applied arts. North of Windermere is Brockhole, the Lake District Visitor Center. Set on the lakeshores the main house is surrounded by beautiful gardens where you will find a huge adventure playground, café, shop and exhibitions along with a host of information about the National Park. For visual entertainment you have the Royalty Cinema in Windermere, and the Old Laundry Theatre in Bowness, staging a lively annual season of music, theatre, comedy and film. There are plenty of pubs, cafes and restaurants, where for me the best is by far Jericho’s in Windermere. Owned and run by Jo and Chris Blaydes, the welcome is always warm, the setting perfect and the cuisine delicious. For a good country pub atmosphere there is the Queens Head at Troutbeck, about 2 miles from the main village the inn offers fine beers, good food and roaring fires in winter months. For the big walks and big landscapes you will have to travel a bit further into the park, however there is a good local walk up onto Orrest Head, which begins from Windermere, just opposite the railway station. Anecdotally it was the first ever walk for Alfred Wainwright where the view from the summit was said to have changed his life and set him on a lifetime of fell walking and the production of those much loved walking guides. Also quite local are the fells to the south of Bowness. Although not mountain high, they offer a magical rolling countryside rising above the lake with magnificent views. Travel a little further afield and you much to explore. South of the villages, at the foot of Windermere, is Newby Bridge and Lakeside where the steamers terminate. Here you will also find Fell Foot Park for boat hire, fishing and the National Trust Gardens. East lies kendal, the capital Town of South Lakeland. A host of good shopping, restaurants and a busy cultrural scene with the likes of the Abbot Hall Art Gallery and The Brewery Arts Center. At the northern head of the lake lies Ambleside, a popular town with cinema, pubs, restaurants and huge selection of outdoor and climbing gear shops. Once you past the head of the lake you are within easy rach of the big fells such as the Langdales, the forest of Grizedale and the other great lake in the south, Coniston Water.
The outstanding natural beauty, beyond compare! Convenience of local village with it's selection of restaurants and shops.
  • Lovely traditional Lakeland cottage, super cute and brilliant location. Stayed here Friday to Sunday for my partners birthday weekend away. The cottage is very cute and cosy with lovey wooden beams and traditional decor. Kitchen has excellent amenities and the place is lovely and clean. The location is just perfect, tucked away behind trees yet a minute walk from the centre on Bowness. Would definitely recommend and would stay here again.

I also have friends who help me with cleaning and they are close by too if by any chance I'm out of town. Kendal is a market town on the edge of the Lake District. • Very nice spacious ground floor of big Victorian house near Kendal centre. Lovely walk up to castle behind house and across river at bottom of road. Comfy beds, nice big kitchen, lovely and warm. Friendly helpful co-host Merv was on site and nice touches included lovely loaf, jam and milk. Highly recommended

  • The hosts left us bread and milk which was fantastic for when we arrived. There was lots of space in the living room and two double bedrooms. Kitchen is fully equipped and the location is great for a short walk into the middle of town. Really recommend it.

  • Lovely space suitable for a small family located seconds away from Kendal Castle and a stones throw to the town centre, just what we were after. Also if your looking for a place to stay with small animals this is a perfect place. Little Bruce our French bulldog loved his time too. Rachel’s Kendal retreat get the thumbs up from me.

  • Rachel’s place was perfect for us. The accommodation was situated in a quiet road about 10 minutes’ walk to the centre of Kendal. It was warm, cosy, exceptionally clean and beautifully furnished with little quirky touches. Kendal is a lovely little town with plenty of choice for eating and drinking. We had a lovely time and will definitely return.

South facing, small, traditional Shepherd's hut with views, internal shower, compost toilet, log burner, kitchen area. 2 mins by car to Kendal. Scenic walks from doorstep. Kendal is an attractive market town with an eclectic range of shops, cafes, restaurants, and a lively Arts Centre with a cinema and theatre.
Please note we are NOT on a bus route. You must have a car or rely on taxis into town (2 mins). Our Shepherd's Hut is a unique place to stay: It is situated on the junction between the rural road to Underbarrow and a bridle- way named Gamblesmire Lane which leads to Cunswick Scar and Scout Scar, so it's ideally situated for country walks. It is fully insulated with sheep's wool so is snug, comfortable and warm. There is a microwave, electric kettle, toaster, indoor shower and a compost lavatory. There is a thermostatically controlled electric heater and a Hobbit wood burning stove for cosy evenings in. The stove heats the hut up very effectively, and we often chuckle when people light it on a warm evening and then fling open all the doors and windows when it gets as hot as a sauna. A good tip is to open the little window above the top bunk as this created a cooling draught of air without being too cold. You can walk out of the door and along Gamblesmire Lane, a footpath that leads to Scout Scar and Cunswick Fell. There are bird feeders beside the window so you can watch the birds at close range, including woodpeckers, and will wake to bird song. As the hut faces south east, you will see the sun rise over the hills and the valley below. On clear nights, you'll see the moon rise. At night, owls hoot in the coppice nearby and in summer there are bats flitting about the hut. At present, the shower works but isn't very powerful as there's not enough water pressure. There is cold water in the bathroom sink and hot water in the living area. In frosty weather the water supply has to be turned off and guests use the bathroom facilities in the house. There is bottled water in the hut. There's a seating area outside the hut with a table and chairs and a small firepit. It is situated in it's own little garden, quite near to our house where we also host Airbnb guests and are on hand to help you with suggestions for exploring the wonderfully green, gentle hills of the Lyth and Winster valley with their numerous green lanes and lovely views. The hut is next to the fell footpath gate and there are horse riders, mountain bikers and walkers going by at times, so expect to enjoy saying hello and having a pleasant chat. In summer, there are Lakeland Hound Trail races up the fell. This is a traditional Lakeland sport and very exciting to watch if you get the chance. (It has nothing to do with fox hunting, by the way). The living space in the hut is 7 feet by 16 feet, so it's about the same size as a small towing caravan but with much more charm and character! Shoes off indoors, please! Don't drain crockery on the lovely wooden sink top. Please dry up with one of our best tea towels instead!
Please note, that WE ARE NOT ON A BUS ROUTE and you will need a car to get here from Kendal. There is a car rental next to Kendal station. Public transport will take you to the main tourist areas, but not to the most beautiful and scenic. It is also very slow and frustratingly infrequent. Convenient as a base for the southern Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, our hut is in a secluded position in our garden with easy parking on the driveway. There is a scenic footpath beside it named Gamblesmire Lane that leads to Cunswick Scar, Scout Scar and footpaths to Underbarrow and Crook. Kendal market town is a 2 minute drive by car or a 40 minute walk across the Scar. It has lots of interesting small shops, a market on Wednesday and Saturday, a fabulous Climbing Wall, the Brewery Arts Centre, interesting historic buildings and yards and excellent cafes. There is also The Museum of Lakeland Life and Abbot Hall Art Gallery. Sizergh Castle and Levens Hall are a few miles to the south of the town. There are 5 award winning country inns that serve great food within a 10 to 20 minute scenic car journey of the hut. The nearest, at Underbarrow 10 minutes away is The Black Labrador. There is also a rural pizza delivery service, if you fancy a night in and a take away.
  • The most magical place. Susan is an outstanding host. Accepted our last minute booking and welcomed us to an exceptionally cosy and picturesque little home with the log fire lit and all of the thought little touches. Wish we could have stayed longer. We will be back! Thank you x

  • Came for one night as a little get away for mine and my boyfriend’s anniversary. Susan was very quick at responding once I had booked my stay and was extremely helpful and accommodating once we had arrived (thank you for putting on the fire for us). The cabin is absolutely dreamy and a lovely, well thought out design. It’s very cosy and heats up really well once you get the fire going. The cabin is well located if you’re going to be exploring the Lake District. Overall we had a brilliant, relaxing stay. The extra touches of the bread and various jams/marmalade’s Susan provided was very thoughtful!

  • Just spent the weekend here, was absolutely amazing! Lovely little hut, very cosy and perfect for a weekend away whilst exploring different parts of the Lake District. Susan was an absolutely brilliant host, very friendly and helpful throughout! Would definitely recommend!

  • We had an excellent stay, the shepherd's hut is a lovely little space in a beautiful part of the world! Would highly recommend.

  • Second time staying in Susan’s Shepherd’s Hut, and we enjoyed it even more due to the wonderfully cosy Hobbit stove! Susan goes out of her way to make the stay as comfortable as possible - she heated up the hut when we arrived late after work in total pea soup, and again when it stormed the day after. Little extra touches make this space truly magical, from milk and water in the fridge, a bottle of wine and cheese at arrival, butter and fresh bread with jams and cereals out, to being super responsive and helpful with local tips. We can’t wait to stay again!

    Inga2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Susan’s Shepherds Hut is gorgeous, such a lovely space! There a many thoughtful touches and Susan had lit the fire for my arrival. She was also incredibly responsive and helpful. The hut is in a great location, a very short drive from Kendal, with easy access to many other Lake District sights. Highly recommend!

My place is close to Lake District, family-friendly activities. You’ll love my place because of the outdoors space, the people, and the neighbourhood. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, business travellers, families (with kids), big groups, and furry friends (pets). Please enquire about pets as we do allow dogs, but there is a small fee.
Beautiful countryside location! The property is surrounded by very beautiful views. The house is located between Kendal and Sedbergh and is close to the Lake District. The house itself is huge with 4 large family bedrooms. The main family room has one super king size and is en suite. There are two more family bedrooms both with a double bed and a single bed in them., then the 4 th bedroom has a king size bed, all bedrooms are very spacious. There is a large living room with a real log burning fire and a large dining area

  • The house was just perfect for a family party - something for everyone. It had everything we needed and the little touches, such as the fresh flowers & basket of logs for the fire made it feel really special. The thoughtful addition of the robes for the hot tub meant that even Storm Dennis couldn’t prevent us from daily hot tub time!

  • Wonderful place to help celebrate my 21st. The house is gorgeous and in a very scenic location. Would stay here again!

  • This is a beautiful farmhouse and you will not be disappointed should you visit. There was 9 of us and fitted us all comfortably. Pool table for the boys and hot tub for the rest of the family and a nice little sing along on the piano. Great spot away from the hustle and bustle with amazing views. You will not be disappointed with this little gem.

  • What a lovely house! My family stayed here for a special birthday celebration, and with a little toddler with an early bedtime, this was perfect for the rest of us to enjoy nice cosy evenings in together. Beautifully decorated with such lovely touches of Christmas decorations and fresh flowers all over the place. The hot tub was great and it was lovely to walk around the grounds seeing the horses. Thank you for a really lovely stay

Really nice dog friendly pub within walking distance. Couldn't fault this stay and would certainly stay again.

  • Absolutely gorgeous annex, very spacious and amazing value for money. The coffee and tea selection was fab, and the croissants and shortbread were lovely touches not to mention delicious. The log burner also warmed us up after a long day of walking in Windermere.

  • This was our second stay at Grey Mists Annex for a New Year break and we loved it again . Warm , cosy, clean , peaceful and very comfy. Also enjoyed the home -made shortbread and jam . Ideally situated for our activities in the Lake District , just a short drive to Ambleside . Hoping to come again .Thanks to Helen and Jonathon .

    Jean2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • Great annex, very warm, great location, welcome from host was lovely with wine, croissants & shortbread. The Black Labrador pub in Underbarrow about 4 miles away served up just about the best pub food we’ve ever had and reasonably priced too and great beer.

    Damon2019-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • The place was very clean and warm, you can stay there even during winter time as you will have enough logs for wood-burner. We got a lot of nice extra compliments on arrival such as croissants, small jar of jam, bottle of wine and bread. It was only 1 minor issue - not good enough wifi signal. The house is well located but only for local attractions. Helen and her husband were very friendly and helpful. Definitely recommend this place as good value for money for discovering south part of Lake District.

  • This is an amazing space, surprised George Clarke hasn't been out to see it! The cabin was fabulously presented, lots of nice touches, it was very clean and cosy and warm on a wet March weekend. Highly recommended as a quiet spot within walking distance of Kendal town centre.

  • Just returned from a 3 night stay in this lovely, warm cabin. Welcomed by Dave who had tips on the local dog friendly pub (unfortunately didn't get chance to call in as too much to do) and local walks. Plenty of space for a couple with off road parking and close to the river for an easy, flat 15-20 minute walk into town or head downstream towards Sizergh Castle for a longer walk. The cabin was spotless, well equipped with good quality furnishings. Even included shampoo, conditioner and liquid soap as well as washing up liquid. Something few self catering properties have. Good wifi, again this is rare in the Lakes. Shame it's a little early in the year to fully enjoy the enclosed, private decking area. I bet its lovely to have tea out there in summer.

The cottage is we equipped with cooking utensils which was ideal for us as we cooked and ate in as we were with out dog. A great location to explore a variety of areas such as the Lake District, the western side of the dales and arnside. Supermarkets and pubs within driving distance but a nicr retreat away from the busyness of other areas. Would definitely stay again and Jayne was a great host. Walks are available straight from the front door. Nesteled in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty let yourself get back to nature with walks or biking straight from the cottage, or the Lakes. With Windemere just 25 minutes away it is a great place to explore the Lake district as well as Silverside and Arnside's AONB. Cumbria, England, United Kingdom Guests come to Rock Cottage to experience the beautiful outdoors. Forest and coastal walks in an Area of Outstanding Beauty with limestone pavements and rare wildlife from the doorstep, the pretty village of Arnside with possibly the best sunsets in the world just a walk or short drive away, and the main attractions of the Lake District within a thirty minute drive. You don’t need to leave the cottage to see the huge range of birdlife in the garden and surrounding woodland, and if you’re lucky you’ll spot deer browsing in the woods too. For even more wildlife, Leighton Moss RSPB wildlife reserve is very close by. There’s a great dog-friendly pub on the coast just a few minutes stroll from the cottage, and a great choice of other pubs and eateries within easy reach, most of which are also dog friendly. For practical purposes, a supermarket, petrol, and choice of take aways in the small town of Milnthorpe just ten minutes from the cottage.

  • What can I say.. We had a brilliant stay at Rachel’s. The house is in a beautiful location with rolling Cumbrian countryside and ideal for getting to the lakes and dales. The house has a really homely feel and because Rachel was out a lot we often had the house to ourselves. Rachel was very kind and advised us on some good places to visit/walk. Excellent value for money and we would definitely rebook.

Witherslack is a quiet rural farming village. It is a popular base for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. It is about a 15 minute walk to our local pub the Derby Arms which serves excellent meals and has a wide choice of beers. If you wish to travel a little further, there are a variety of pubs which serve good food, and at least five of them only take between 7 & 10 minutes by car and they are all definitely worth a visit. Well known Whitbarrow Scar is the backdrop to Landour and is just 10 minutes walk away. The scar is designated a biological site of special interest and a ' national nature reserve' due to its supporting some of the best European examples of natural limestone habitats. It also features in 'The Outlying Fells of Lakeland' by Alfred Wainwright. He describes it as "the most beautiful walk in this book, beautiful it is every stage of the way.... all is fair to the eye on Whitbarrow". There are many other public footpaths starting in Witherslack, two of which start within 50 yards of this property. One of these takes you up Yewbarrow Fell and the other towards Beck Head and Whitbarrow Scar. If you wish to venture further afield Lake Windermere is only a twenty minute drive away or, for the more energetic, it's about a two hour walk across the fells. The popular village of Cartmel is also about a twenty minute drive away and is well known for its 12th century medieval Priory, the racecourse and its culinary delights i.e. the L'Enclume restaurant which was hailed best in the U.K. by the 2014 Good Food Guide Other places nearby to visit are Levens Hall renowned for its topiary gardens, Sizergh Castle, Holker Hall, Fell Foot on Lake Windermere and Grange-over-Sands where you can catch a train over the viaduct across Morecambe Bay to Arnside. For those that enjoy shopping the popular market town of Kendal is twenty minutes away. Then there is all of the Lake District within your reach by car or, if you enjoy pedalling up hills, by bike!

  • Laraine and Bill’s studio is fabulous! It has such a cosy, comfortable feel and is perfectly located for those who want to go exploring. It is a short 20 minute drive away from many villages, such as Bowness-on-Windermere, Windermere and Cartmel Fell, so there is plenty to do and see. Laraine and Bill were also very friendly hosts - the continental breakfast they provided was lovely and had a ‘special touch’. Would highly recommend this place to anyone interested in visiting The Lakes.

  • We arrived later than planned so it was dark when we arrived and we weren’t sure which way to go so called Victor . Alison came and showed us around. The place was nice, clean and cosy. The supermarkets were 10-15 min drive we visited the Lakes during our stay (20 min drive).. There was a cooker, fridge, microwave and everything needed to cook for 5 people . There was also tea, coffee, sugar, milk and biscuits as well as information about the local activities left for us in the kitchen table. Very happy with the service, facilities and I would highly recommend.

    Maral2020-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • We were a party of 6 lasses (age 30-40) looking for local walks followed by drinks with food..... and We found this perfect place 💕 Stayed two nights. The pod was warm and cosy when we arrived. Check in was simple. We had three car parking spaces so we could quickly unload our gear. The pod was clean and welcoming with everything we needed. We soon had the kettle on enjoying complimentary biscuits, tea and coffee. The guest book gave helpful suggestions for things to do and places to go, whatever your preference: Church, walks, pubs, pod, heritage sites, shops-I could go on. There are cooking facilities and a microwave, a good fridge with small freezer section and full sink and drainer. Everything was clean, you can see the place is well cared for. We opted for the local pub which did excellent quality food, including vegetarian. We retired for the evening and took advantage of the great heating system, cranking it up so we were lovely and warm. The double glazed windows kept the wind out. There was a double bed, futon couch which turned into a double bed and then two singles. Linen was fresh and quilts were new. We enjoyed a walk the following day. There are national trust walking routes, short and long. The local area is peaceful with awesome views. We noticed other people cycling and running in the area and the locals were friendly so no fear of getting lost without directions. Back in the pod, we had a large 6 seater dining table to use. There were plenty plates and bowls with cutlery. The bathroom was clean and equipped with fresh towels, soap and loo rolls. We really enjoyed the lovely hot shower. We all had good phone signal and when I needed a quick call to the host, they answered the phone straight away. He was very helpful and friendly. We took a taxi to Kendal which was £14 but worth it so we had the freedom of going for drinks after shopping. Check out was an easy as check in. The only bad bit was that we wished we’d booked for longer. We had such fun and it was perfect. Thanks for having us 👌

    Catherine2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • What a lovely experience staying in our own log cabin in the woods. My daughter and her friends loved their sleepover. We loved exploring the surrounding countryside and found a lovely pub for a drink. Alison and Victor offered to light us a fire in the fire pit which would have been great but unfortunately it was raining and very windy! The cabin was really warm and cosy with everything we needed. There is no TV or WIFI, which I think is a good thing and not a complaint, but if going with young children, just be prepared with some board games or similar to keep them entertained or download some programmes if they need to watch something before bed. We hope to return, perhaps in the summer so we can enjoy the fire pit! Thank you

  • Beautiful stay for 6 adults, there was enough space for everyone to sleep comfortably. The pod was spotless and well equipped. Would definitely recommend this stay to a friend or anyone who’s looking for a night or two away to relax.

  • Both my Mum and I thoroughly enjoyed staying here. The space had everything you needed to make you feel relaxed. One thing I would say is, if there was a little WiFi it would go a long way! But also great to be able to switch off from the outside world. Definitely will be coming back (#PostPandemicTrip).

  • This is an amazing space. Stunning views, perfect location and highly unique. The pod is unbelievably cosy and everything feels brand new and sparklingly clean. Alison and Victor are brilliant and attentive hosts, and have created a beautiful space on the edge of the Lakes. We can't wait to return.

  • This really was a little haven. The cabin was cosy, well equipped and peaceful, it was a perfect way to break up the drive from Dorset to Glasgow and back. It has everything you would need, a very comfortable bed, fantastic shower and great views. The advice on places to visit was really helpful too, I recommend eating at the Strickland Arms - the fish and chips was excellent and the pub had a lovely friendly atmosphere. All in all a great little stay. Would love to come back and explore the area some more.

    Flora2020-03-12T00:00:00Z
  • This is an outstanding and unique place to stay, Victor and Alison have thought of all the little details to make your stay as comfortable as possible. I would highly recommend staying here and I am certain I will stay again!

  • Total and utter heaven! Me and a friend went to The Lakes for some mega hiking in the windiest rainiest weather but Sophie’s hut kept us warm, unbelievably comfortable and all the treats upon arrival alongside the gorgeous little stove made for a magical trip! The space itself is beautifully designed with lots of storage for bags, a hot shower and all the facilities (bar an oven and a hob) that you could ever need. 10/10 from us and will be sending friends and family up there soon!

  • Wild Sheep is the most beautiful and lovingly designed shepherds hut you will ever find! It was clean, cosy and is ideally located for exploring the Lake District. Sophie is a great host, answering any questions we had and the breakfast hamper she provided on arrival was delicious! We really can’t wait to come back.

    Sarah2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • Sophie is a fantastic host with the most beautiful Shepherds Hut. It’s amazing what she has done with such a small area and has come up with really great ideas to utilise all the space. It’s so cosy, especially when the wood fire is on. Not once did I feel cold or like it was too small. Sophie provides a the cutest breakfast hamper on arrival and she catered for me being vegan without any trouble which I am very grateful for! The homemade granola is delicious!! I definitely recommend staying here. Sophie went above and beyond to provide local walks, attractions, places to eat and drink etc and I really loved my stay here.

    Chloe2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • This hut is truly amazing! Sophie and her family are nothing but the most amazing hosts. All the personal touches are amazing and the hut is so cosy you will just want to stay in all day with the log burning fire! I would give this more than 5 out of ten if possible! Recommend to anyone looking for a little bit of an escape and somewhere a little bit different :)

The first floor has a sofa bed for two people, space to hang clothes and access to the only bathroom. The ground floor consists of the living room and kitchen with washer and dryer. Parking is just outside in a private space.

  • Once again Marina's place is wonderful. It has such a nice feel to it - quirky, welcoming, calm, spacious, yet cosy. It's our favourite Airbnb. Thank you for having us again, hope the eggs and jam went down we, and have a great 2020!

    Helen2019-12-22T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful little cottage right in the centre of town that comes with a private parking space (may be tight if you have a large car). We stayed here while attending an event at the Brewery Arts Centre and was only a 5 minute walk away. Check in was easy with the keys being in a lock box. The cottage itself has everything you would need for a comfortable stay. On a very cold night the cottage was lovely and warm. Set over 3 floors with the bedroom at the top of the house, the decor was lovely and everywhere was clean and tidy. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. A great little find.

  • Such a gorgeous space! The Potting Shed is the most beautiful Air bnb we have ever stayed in. The location is perfect and isn’t too far away from the village but at the same time far away enough to enjoy the peaceful countryside! Derek was amazing and was there to make sure we had everything we needed. We will definitely be back!

  • Amazing place to stay with a luxurious feel and great hospitality. Local area was beautiful with quick access to the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales. Had an amazing time!

    Lottie2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely few days at the Potting Shed - such a lovely, well equipped hideaway. It was just what we needed and there were lots of suggestions for local walks and pubs around the area. Derek was very accommodating and the hamper of treats was a great addition. Thank you

    Becky2020-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • The Potting Shed is a wonderful place to stay based just outside of the Lake District (about a 15 minute drive to Lake Windermere). It’s set on a farm, but is really modern and has everything you need to make home cooked meals. The bed is really comfortable, as is the couch and the shower is amazing. We were forced to remain indoors all weekend due to the weather, but that wasn’t a problem at all, as it’s a really nice place to stay. Would highly recommend this property.

  • Lovely location in a small village. Close to the coast and the lakes by car. Really lovely space with great views over the hills.

    Oscar2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Old Blue Bell Cottage is so lovely; Mary was kind enough to visit us when we arrived and show us where we wanted to go on a huge map. The cottage itself was very clean and tidy, with windowsills big enough to sit on and take in the scenery (my favourite thing to do), a huge bath and a bathroom with heated flooring! Initially I bought the cottage would be quite crapped but it is definitely very spacious and every had a slight walk in wardrobe. All in all, an amazing trip!

    Antonia2020-02-03T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely place to stay. The host is a great communicator and if you have any questions her replies are super fast! The accommodation was better than we expected and had a really professional feel. The carpets are lovely and swishy, the underfloor heating in the bathroom was a nice treat and the whole accommodation was lovely and cosy. A really homely place to stay and superbly clean. Definitely worth staying for longer than two nights to make the most of it!

    Debs2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • Mary gave us a warm welcome and was very knowledgeable about the surrounding area. She provided a binder full of suggestions and information, as well as maps, menus from nearby pubs and restaurants (recommend the Hare and Hounds for great food and ales), etc. which was very useful. The cottage itself was very warm, clean and comfortable. Fully equipped kitchen, modern bathroom and a comfortable common area. A great base for exploring the Lakes.

    Ed & Josh2020-01-22T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely loved staying at Mary's place. It was a lovely blend of rustic and modern which just seemed to work throughout the building. Amazing facilities with everything you would need for a short break or a week away. We are very keen to return!

    Matt2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at the cottage last week and it was a an ideal location for visiting the south of the lakes. Upon our arrival Mary introduced herself and shared her knowledge of the area, which was perfect for us as we hadn’t got any idea where/what to do for the week. There was plenty of map/leaflets also within the cottage to help us plan our adventures. As mentioned on other reports, the bedrooms and bathroom are downstairs and the lounge/Kitchen is upstairs, this was ideal for taking in the views from the lounge area. The cottage was very clean and was perfect for our weeks holiday. There is a small garden outside which was lovely to sit in when the sun was out, also our dog loved playing with her ball there whilst we enjoyed the view and drinks. If anyone is looking to stay in the south of the Lake District then I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this cottage.

    Steve2019-09-14T00:00:00Z

  • We visited Sunnyside cottage for a long weekend, we had an amazing time - would recommend to anyone! It has been decorated so beautifully inside, the cottage was so well presented and you can clearly see that a lot of thought has gone into the whole place. The coffee machine and Alexa were additional extras that we loved, as well as the hot tub! Barbon village is lovely as well, on Lee & Richard’s recommendation we booked in for the Friday night bistro evening at The Churchmouse which was fab - definitely worth a visit! We will definitely be back to Barbon!

    Ellie2020-03-16T00:00:00Z
  • What a beautiful cottage to spend a romantic weekend in! Everything we could have hoped for had been provided. I loved the mix of the modern and old features in what was a very cosy space. Our only regret was not staying another night. We would fully recommend staying here and would love to come back another time in the near future. Also Barbon, is a wonderful little village with very welcoming locals.

It is a beautiful, peaceful space with luxury amenities and the most thoughtful touches. Everything we could have possibly needed for a perfect, relaxing getaway was right there. Lee and Richard are brilliant hosts - on hand to answer any questions or help if required. The hot tub and bath tub were luxury additions which made the stay extra special, not to mention the most comfortable bed and luxury linen and towels. We loved absolutely everything ... can it recommend Sunnyside cottage enough!!

  • Amazing, stunning, tranquil, escape to the countryside. We feel truly lucky to have stumbled across this absolute gem! Even ended up booking an extra night because we didn’t want to leave! Great hosts fast responses and beautiful decor throughout. The bed is the comfiest I’ve stayed in I struggled to get out! Stunning fire place, bath, walk in shower and hot tub are just some of the amazing features. If you’re hesitating to book just do it I would 100% return without hesitation.

  • Sunnyside Cottage is a fabulous place to stay, beautifully presented with the great facilities, sparkling clean and a great base to access the dales for lots of lovely walks. It was the perfect location for our honeymoon and we will definitely be going back again sometime soon.

  • Wow! Sunnyside cottage is just stunning! Immaculately clean, stylish and homely at the same time. We had everything we could have needed. The decor in the cottage us absolutely gorgeous, the bathroom especially. Chilled nights in the hot tub followed by cozying up on front of the log burner. Barbon is such a cute little village and the local pub is only a 5 minute stroll away which we loved. Highly recommend a stay at Sunnyside we will definitely be back!

The accommodation is on the ground floor. It comprises an entrance lobby, double bedroom and shower room with private entrance and off road parking. The room is comfortable and pleasant with a large window looking out to the front of the property. There is a TV in the bedroom, also kettle, toaster and mini fridge. The ingredients for a simple breakfast are provided, however, for a more substantial breakfast there is a cafe a few minutes walk away which opens at 8.30am and is highly recommended.
Milnthorpe is a pleasant, friendly village which has a selection of shops, pubs, restaurants, take-aways, parks and there is a market on Fridays. It is a great base for exploring the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and the Cumbrian coast all of which are in easy reach and very accessible. The village is the perfect starting point for a number of scenic walks with stunning views of the Morecambe Bay estuary. Maps and leaflets are provided to help you plan excursions.

    * Corona Virus edit: We are still taking bookings. We are in a rural setting with no immediate neighbours * The Bothy at Cowmire Hall is a delightful, first-floor converted farm building, consisting of a hall, large living-room/kitchen open to the roof, a shower-room and double bedroom. There is also a gallery or sleeping-platform above the kitchen area which can be accessed via a ladder from the living room/used as a bedroom at your own risk and there is also a sofa bed in the living room.
The main living area is open plan and vaulted to the ceiling with exposed beams and trusses. A Juliette balcony opens out on to the inner farm yard giving views of Whitbarrow Scar, an impressive limestone escarpment and well worth a walk to the top, where views of the neighbouring valleys and beyond on a clear day are a must. The kitchen is well-equipped with plenty of crockery, utensils, serving and cooking dishes, pans, baking trays, making life easy if you want to enjoy home cooking during your stay. It is open plan to the main living space, meaning guests can interact whether relaxing on the sofa or rustling up a delicious meal. There is a large electric range style cooker as well as a microwave, fridge and dishwasher. The Bothy is centrally heated and also has a wood burner - perfect for a night in. Kindling and logs are provided, baskets are stocked on arrival and guests are invited to top up from the woodshed during their stay. The living area had a large TV screen with DVD player, internet is free and is Fibre to home Broadband, giving excellent connection should you need it. Fuel, bed-linen and towels are included. The Bothy sleeps up to six people, with the option of a double bed, sofa bed or two single floor beds on the mezzanine (open to the main living area). Please note that the mezzanine is accessed by a cut out wooden wall ladder. The bathroom has an electric shower, basin, toilet and large linen cupboard. There is a utility room on the ground floor (separate entrance) with use of a sink, washing-machine, tumble-drier, freezer space and space for bicycles etc. There is an outside sitting area with table and barbecue. The Bothy looks out to the south over a farm-yard to Cowmire Hall - a C16 pele tower extended in the late C17, where the owners live - its garden and the Winster Valley. To the north the view is of the farm orchard. There is not any livestock in this yard, though tractors come and go, and our hens have the run of the space during the day. Guests may park cars here. The yard is separated from the main road by a gate, and the house by a wall and gate, giving a safe space for dogs to be off the lead. We would however ask that they are exercised either along the lanes or adjoining fields.
There are 2 local pubs within walking distance of The Bothy, one being the famous Masons Arms at Strawberry Bank and also the Hare and Hounds at Bowland Bridge. Walking takes about 15/20 minutes to these fantastic pubs, both of which allow dogs.
  • Nothing better than staying in a Bothy for a full immersion in the Lake District. Rebecca’s place has all the basics, and the atmosphere is homely and welcoming with a warm log stove and comfortable sofas in what was clearly a very old barn, converted to a good standard. The Bothy is in wonderful countryside with lots to see, do and eat nearby. Thanks for sharing!

  • Great countryside location close to Lake Windermere - well maintained and lots of character

    Nathan2020-03-08T00:00:00Z

    Arunya2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • Great location. Our kids loved hearing all the farm animals. Great log burner....very cosy.

    Emily2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • A wonderful place to stay whilst in the Lake District. Rebecca was very welcoming and helpful, the accommodation was clean, comfortable and great fun for us city folk. We will be telling all and sundry about our stay and urging them to book so I'd be quick if you want to enjoy the bothy.

    Daniel2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • The Bothy is beautiful. Put the kettle on and have a cuppa by the log burner and read a book or watch a film. The entire place was clean, comfortable and quaint. The little touches Rebecca adds such as the blankets, the towels, the decorative ornaments make its feel like a home. The kitchen has everything you need, even spare dog bowls. Rebecca was lovely and responded quickly to any questions I had. Being greeted by the chickens in the morning is a delight too. It’s also only a 15 minute drive to Windermere where you can get the ferry over the Ambleside. The walks are peaceful, especially when the sun is shining.
