“The Meteora – 4 hours from Athens. This is truly one of the wonders of Greece and is my favorite destination in mainland Greece. Monasteries are perched on the top of mountainous rocks. This an amazing and awe-inspiring sight.”

“Located at 40 min from de house, the most celebrated sanctuary of ancient Greece. Dedicated to Zeus, Olympia became the most important religious and athletic centre in Greece. Its fame rests upon the Olympic Games, the greatest national festival and a highly prestigious one world-wide, which was held every four years to honour Zeus. The archaeological site of Olympia includes the sanctuary of Zeus and the various buildings erected around it, such as athletic premises used for the preparation and celebration of the Olympic Games, administrative buildings as well as other buildings and monuments.”

Castle
“Dominating the city, the Castle of Kalamata (or kastro) sits on a lush pine-covered hill. Geoffroi de Villehardouin, a Frank knight who conquered Achaea, constructed the structure in 1208. It boasts an impressive gate, and though dating from the 13th century, it miraculously survived the 1986 earthquake, responsible for the destruction of a major part of the city. A little haven of peace and serenity, the kastro is the best place to enjoy the sunset from a beautiful vantage point.”

“The castle crowns a bluff overlooking the town. Much of it is occupied by the Timios Prodromos Convent, so a strict dress code applies. You can enter via the castle’s impressive Gothic entrance. The small promontory beyond the castle is a tranquil place for a stroll, with lovely views over the Messinian Gulf to the Taÿgetos Mountains.”
