Come and visit Kyoto's mountainous area and stay in a traditional thatched-roof (Kayabuki) house. The specialty of our house is that you can eat Japanese family dishes cooked by the local host couple, and you can even learn how to cook them :)
--The space-- The town we live in is called Keihoku. It's only 1 hour North from central Kyoto and you can enjoy stunningly majestic mountain and river scenery, fresh air, and meet heart-warming people. We also offer some unique nature tours!
--The neighborhood-- Here in Keihoku, you can put yourself in majestic nature - enjoy trekking riverside, travel to the waterfall and giant cedar forest, or visit and pray in peaceful temples and shrines.
  • We had the most fabulous couple of days at Hideo's thatched cottage. We took full advantage of his guided tours. We have 2 children - 10 and 12 - and they learned so much. Our 12 yo loves cooking and loved joining Yukako in the kitchen each night. Our 10 yo son is very proud of the chop sticks he crafted. Traditional accommodation, with all ammenities and extras like tea, coffee and cereal. Wouldn't hesitate to book.

  • Hideo and Yukako were wonderful hosts! Really nice, fun people with cute dogs (the golden retriever was really great to play with, very funny :) Definitely try one of Yukako's meals at least once, and the day trips are worth it too (the waterfall and cedars were my favorite). Went with my mom and she left her vitamins and they not only sent them to us in Osaka, but also gave us some small gifts. Wonderful location, home, people (and dogs!) Would absolutely recommend

  • Hideo and Yukako were excellent hosts and were warm and welcoming. Hideo took us on interesting trips and Yukako provided wonderful meals each evening. It was very special to be able to stay in Hideo's ancestral home with its thatched roof and beautiful rooms. We recommend it to anyone who would like to spend some time in the Japanese countryside.

  • Nice place to stay in nature area of Kyoto! Helpful and kind host family, they provide all kinds of information and also a portable wifi router. Lovely breakfast with a bit of extra charge which is excellent, should TRY! Not easy to find the entrance at night, do check-in earlier :)

    Cherie2017-03-20T00:00:00Z
  • The house is very clean, well -equipped and comfortable. One of my friend fell asleep at the bamboo couch immediately while I'm check-in with Hideo. Hideo and his wife are very helpful, kind and humourous. Hideo's wife is a good cook, and the extra-price is reasonable, so you are highly recommended to try their dishes. The seafood market they recommended is a must go activity. The seafood there is very cheap and fresh. My only regret was I didn't try Hideo's curry. Hope to visit again to try his curry cuisine and seafood.

  • A slice of rustic countryside, a quiet place far from the maddening crowds but just 30 km from Kyoto. Lovely host Hideo and Yuka with their two friendly dogs certainty made us feel welcome. The surrounding little towns and cypress forests with windy roads and magnificent river : so atmospheric and evocative of a quieter country life. There were only four of us so there was a lot of room - if you have a party of 6 it would be just nice. We loved the kitchen, the heated table and sleeping on futons. Please note that there is only one bath and a separate toilet plus another separate sink. We had a rented car and drove everywhere. Hideo is certainly a great host who responds quickly to every message.

    Daphne2017-04-09T00:00:00Z
  • They were such a sweet couple! Very accommodating, friendly and kind, and thoughtful, too! We were pleasantly surprised to see tooth brushes and other amenities in their house, like a real Ryokan in Japan! The house was very spacious and clean. The whole area was serene and beautiful. We did bicycling around. What a gem! Definitely would like to come back!! :)

Relax at Satoyama in a traditional Japanese house that was built more than 150 years ago 〜(*^^*) I am currently repairing and remodeling the house on my own to create a community traditional Japanese house. Although the house is still cluttered or inconvenient in many ways, I've posted this information hoping that you may be interested. You can also use it to enjoy a barbecue in the garden, or to take a break from traveling. The room is approximately 15 minutes to the town center of Miyama, and approximately 20 minutes to Sonobe Interchange on the Kyoto Jukan Expressway, and about an hour from the city center of Kyoto. 3500 yen per guest overnight, and 1500 yen per guest for using the facility only. Please also consult me if you would like to use my spacious parking area for a bazaar or for other events♪
It is basically a community traditional Japanese house run by the community members. Guests can sign up for a free membership. If you are simply interested in using the facility, you will be treated as a non-member of the community. Please behave properly, and be cheerful to everyone there. This traditional Japanese house was built more than 150 years ago. It is now being repaired in a DIY-style after several decades of abandonment. Since it is in Satoyama, the house is in an environment with insects and animals. In the evening, deers pop up near the houses to play. It is not a beautiful facility like a standard inn, so please find a different accommodation if you are looking for a place of such nature. "I just simply wish to relax at the veranda or a room of a traditional Japanese house" ♪ "I want to do a barbecue in a garden ♪ And I want to enjoy singing karaoke" ♪ "I want to enjoy talking with people" ♪ (The manager has been engaged in different kinds of consulting, was part of an inter-industrial networking community, as well as a part of a community group for several decades) "I want to spend my time freely without worrying about anything" ♪ If this describes your feelings well, this place is definitely for you (o^∇^o)ノ The guest basically does everything for himself or herself, including using the kitchen and barbecue area, as well as boiling the water to take a bath in the Goemonburo bath tub. You are free to use the spacious garden, Goemonburo bath tub, and if you wish, the fireplace and okudosan (furnace). The room has 2 beds and 1 extra foldable bed. You can do karaoke or watch TV in the Japanese-style room (size of 8-tatami) with a long table. You can also connect your smartphone to enjoy your favorite music. This Japanese-style room can accommodate up to 4, 5 guests. The room is not equipped with futon sets enough for many guests, so please contact me in advance. Or please bring a sleeping bag. You can use the kitchen and earthen floor as well. During the cold season, we dynamically place a oil drum stove on the earthen floor, which allows you to enjoy some time sitting together around the stove. Please contact me in advance if you wish to do a barbecue or set up a tent.
The time you spend in Satoyama runs very slowly. Immersed in nature, you will feel completely healed and will be able to easily sense the seasonal changes each time you visit the close-by Miyama. Although there are certain inconveniences, you might just end up wanting to live in an traditional Japanese house yourself someday (*^^)v
  • Very friendly and helpful. It was very enjoyable time and sharing some conversation. The old style bath perfect to escape the cold road.

  • Very kind host. Knows the entire area very well!

    David2017-08-01T00:00:00Z
  • When we arrived at the place, we were very upset as it was very messy and cold. The accommodation is very basic (you need to know that) and the price is way too high (we were 6 persons and paid more than 200 euros per night). However, Juliano is a great host and a very nice person. He was very welcoming and he adapted quickly to our needs and preferences. He spared no efforts to make our stay pleasant, helped us out to have a nice dinner and he took us out to spend new year's eve at a local temple to play the gong and eat traditional soba, unforgettable!!

    enrico2016-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great place for those who wanted to experience olden days where there were no modern facilities such as electronic water heater or TV. The host was helpful and friendly, you would not have problem if you are prepared.

  • Perfect stay! It was one of the best airbnb stay we had so far. It was comfortable stay for 7 people. One toilet (plus one male toilet) could be trouble for big group, but we can managed that within our group. We drove there and direction is very accurate. Location wise, short walk to train station, nice morning run route, great onsen facility nearby, convenience store is 5 mins drive and Miyama Village is 20 mins drive away--just perfect for us. Lastly, lovely host with welcome tea and delicious snacks -- and cute garden. Highly recommended.

  • Very nice Japanese house with zen garden. Best place for relax with Japanese life style.

    Leung2017-10-08T00:00:00Z
  • Great house in the true "Japanese modern style" with many traditional features, lots of wood, paper shields for the windows, slidable doors of cupboards to put the bedding in etc. Much bigger than a usual Japanese house, 3 comfortable rooms to sleep in plus a living rom connected to a kitchen with large table. The kitchen is better equipped than any holiday home kitchen I have ever experienced (plus, a lot cleaner and newer than usual...) The owner was very kind and helpful, providing us with breakfast and many items in the fridge. By all means, a very pleasant location in an incredibly nice countryside.

    Midori2017-09-18T00:00:00Z
  • This place is fantastic! It is a home in the traditional style but with all the modern amenities you could possibly want. It's about 50 minutes from Kyoto. And if you don't mind that I couldn't recommend this place more. It is so nice to come back after a long day of exploring the city to a place that really feels like a home. It is serene and comfortable. It was nice to have the opportunity to spend some time of our trip in a traditional-style home and not just visit modern apartments in cities. Atsushi is a wonderful host. We met him and his mother on the first night. They showed us all of the features of the house and then shared some tea with us. Afterwards they asked if it would be okay for Atsushi's mother to visit the house in a few days to drop off some more bread for us. We of course said yes. When we got home that day we were delighted to find not only bread, but some homemade miso soup and rice. It was such a kind gesture.

    Damask2017-04-02T00:00:00Z
  • Thanks for the help from Atsushi's family. We really had a good time while we stay here and everyone slept well. It's a really cozy and warm house especially for family. I wish I could get back here someday.

Completed in 2013 the result is a blend between the best of the old thatched architecture with modern more compact floor plan and features like underfloor heating and full air conditioning. Located in the place off the beaten track.
The cottage is a scenic thatched cottage complete with all the modern conveniences. Surrounded by mountains, beautiful rice fields and a bamboo forest, this is the perfect place to relax and unwind. This house is surrounded by rice fields and bamboo forests, a perfect place to relax and explore the beautiful Miyama a countryside. With an uninterrupted view of the mountains and valley, you can sit outside on the porch and enjoy the sunset. Especially popular with families as children can make a ruckus and play outside on the lawn without disturbing any neighbours (there are none close enough to disturb).
This brand new thatched cottage was built by local wood craftsmen using exclusively local timber in collaboration with our own thatched roof specialist. Completed in 2013 the result is a blend between the best of the old thatched architecture with modern more compact floor plan and features like underfloor heating and full air conditioning. The deck provides a great space for eating outdoors or reading a book in the shade while taking in the scenic view. Downstairs the floor plan is open and functional with a combined modern fully equipped kitchen, dining area and lounge. Upstairs under a canopy of thatch there are comfy beds for 5 people and extra futons if required (for up to 7 guests in total). There are 3 single beds in one bedroom and a double bed in a separate room. The traditional wooden bathtub is a treat for the senses as this type of wood (Japanese cedar) gives off a wonderful perfume.
  • A great place to escape the pace of the larger cities in Japan. Beautiful scenery and great location to walk and ride bikes. A rental car would allow you to explore the area further but we enjoyed being car free and the trip to Sonobe station was a breeze from Kyoto.

  • Although our stay was brief, it was wonderful to get away and spend time in such a beautiful, tranquil place. Local food was very good, though I wish we'd had time to try more. The owner, Yusa, was great. Friendly, welcoming, helpful, kind, quick and responsive to requests, even picking us up to save us from the rain on the last day!

    Philip2015-12-24T00:00:00Z
  • Yusa-san was able to communicate effectively in English with us, that is a plus point for foreigners. The surrounding around the villa is very picturesque and we had a great time exploring the neighborhood. The villa itself is very roomy and homely.

  • We had a wonderful stay in the country with our kids here. The staff made it so easy for us, picking us up and dropping us off where we needed to be. The house was charming, bikes available to explore and a nice break from the city. The cooking class was really fun for all of us and very authentic.

  • We travel Japan with two children. The kaya villa is a great place for family as they provide bicycle for kids and we can ride safely in this fabulous scenery. Yusa is very nice to answer us promptly and all staffs can communicate efficiently in English is really a place point. We have a great stay at kaya village and will definitely recommend this place to visitors coming to Japan.

  • My family and myself love the apt. I brought my two kids (1&2 year old) here and it's very safe for them to run around in the big grass around the house. My parents love it since it's so refreshing to live in such a quiet and natural neighborhood with full equipped house to make ourselves really comfortable. They also provided good equipment so you can actually do some local stuff like walking in the forest and neighborhood. The apt itself is very comfortable and they provide good amount of food for breakfast. We did bbq and it was so much fun. The only thing is that we only stayed for one night whilst I realized how much more we can do if we stay longer. Will definitely visit again in the future. I highly recommend people who would take good care of this amazing property to stay at this house.

    Jenny2017-05-29T00:00:00Z
  • We loved this cottage experience! Fresh and modern inside with a traditional look on the outside, it was the perfect country retreat. It's just an hour outside of Kyoto (a city which seems crowded with tourists in comparison), and it's well-worth the drive thru picturesque Japanese countryside and villages to enjoy a peaceful refuge in Miyama. The view out the kitchen windows was a beautiful bamboo grove and the front glass doors opened up to the tranquil, lush fields and mountains beyond. Our son enjoyed running down the country lanes and over a bridge spanning the river. We loved the cedar bathtub and spa-like shower room. The kitchen was modern, spacious, open-concept and well-stocked, including a full-size fridge and stove range with pots and pans. A lovely breakfast with bread, local milk, eggs, cereal, and coffee was included. Yusa was kind and helpful and provided instructions in English for appliances as well as an emergency cell phone. We all said we would love to stay here again when we return to Kyoto!

Akiko, Jun, Mayuko, Hiro and Tao are the most amazing host ever! They have done everything to make my stay amazing. For a week I was part of the family (the one with many mothers that spoil you). Cycling around the area, swimming in the river, playing music together, bbq parties with fireworks! and every meal is a delicious feast since all of them are amazing cooks (and happy to teach). This family is so easy going, super friendly, nice and their English is very good. If you are interested in sustainability, organic food, alternative lifestyles and the good life in the stunningly beautiful Japanese country side and close to Kyoto. Yes-Yes-Yes!! Tao-House Dai Suki! • I can't think of a way to fault such a beautiful stay. Akiko, Jun, Mayuko, Hiro and Tao welcomed us into their home with seemingly endless generosity and kindness. Such an amazing way to enjoy the natural wonders of Keihoku. This house truly goes above and beyond any air BnB description that could do them justice. I can't wait to come back!

  • Our stay at Tao house was the absolute highlight of our trip. Akiko, Myeko, Hiro and Jim were such lovely generous and hospitable people. The breakfasts and dinners were divine, home cooked organic japanese food feasts and we had sociable evenings eating together. Tao house is a traditional japanese house, surrounded by their organic veg gardens. We hired bikes, did Saki tasting and I had the most wonderful Massage followed by herbal bath. We stayed for three nights and were sad to leave. I highly recommend Tao house as a perfect retreat from the cities.

  • From the moment we arrived after taking the bus through the beautiful mountain road, we were greeted with such warmth, and kindess from Hiro, Mayuko and of course little Tao. Our stay was short and we had booked our stay rather last minute so we didn't organize anything, however Hiro kindly got us into the Sake Brewery which was a fun way to start our stay! We immediately regretted not having enough time to stay for longer. The surrounding area is so peaceful and gorgeous and we managed to fit in a short hike after Hiro kindly informed us of paths that we can take and supplied a map for the hike. I cannot express to you enough the generosity and kindess of Mayuko and Hiro who were absolutely wonderful and we had such a fun evening over a delicious meal prepared by Mayuko and telling stories and of course laughing with Tao. We miss them already and can't wait to return! When we do we will definitely be staying for longer to truly enjoy the area and their company more. Thank you so much!

The house is really pretty, clean air, huge trees and gardens surrounding it. Farming land is spliced inside tall hills making this a truly attractive area. We met a few of their local friends and everyone was so nice. They even (learned, then baked) a cake for my birthday... and it was fabulous. Their English is also excellent. If you want to see Japan, this beats a hotel by a million miles. These are really good people... I truly feel like we have new friends in japan, and that's priceless!

  • I had a lovely stay at Akiko and family's home in the Kyoto countryside. Akiko picked me up from Shuzan station and we went back to the house for an amazing Japanese curry dinner with vegetables picked from their garden. I had a great evening chatting to the families and Akiko helped me organise my next day of activities- a cycle ride to a beautiful suspension bridge and a trip with Akiko and her husband to a local festival. The area was absolutely beautiful and I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with the family and gaining insight into Kyoto countryside living. Thank you very much for a great night's stay, I wish I could have stayed a little longer.

  • It was a magical experience. Hiro and wife and their baby Tao were just wonderful and genuine hosts. We met with their friends and had a special evening of barbecue in their garage with all ending up singing. Tks again Hiro. The Tao house is special. A must visit

  • Wow!! I can't begin to describe what a wonderful experience it was to stay at the organic farm Jam House. It was one of the best homestay experiences I've ever had. The two couples who run the guest house/farm/music venue are SO cool, sweet, and warm, and they welcomed me in like family. I hope we will be friends for years to come. If you are looking to really experience Japanese culture, for a retreat in the beautiful countryside, and to make new friends, you must stay here. I feel so lucky to have found them. Here are a couple (of the many) reasons why I loved my stay: They are amazing cooks! I've ended up food-touring Japan, and the meals I shared with them are the best I've had here. We ate all meals together - either at the kitchen table, the kotatsu (heated table on the tatami mat floor), in the outdoor seating area, or in the SUPER COOL music venue garage space. It's $5 for breakfast and lunch and $10 for dinner, and I would recommend eating all meals at the house. Everything is made with organic, healthy ingredients - and lots of love. We started each morning with homemade croissants, fresh baked bread, organic salad greens, a selection of local jams, and freshly-roasted fair-trade coffee (coffee-lovers: they roast the green beans themselves). Lunch was Japanese curry, stir fry, or a noodle dish with a fresh salad and miso soup. Dinner was communal style nabe (like clay pot stew where you cook thin pieces of pork and vegetables in the broth - so fun and yummy), and tempura vegetables and meats. Also they are super accommodating of vegetarianism or veganism - or any other dietary restrictions for that matter. They are very accepting and welcoming of people from all over the world and all walks of life. Communication was great. Mina and I exchanged many messages beforehand and she answered all my questions within minutes. Mina picked me up and dropped me off at the train station. She also took me into town anytime I needed something. We went on two tours - one of the traditional town of Miyama, and the other of a local temple and beautiful waterfall. Both trips were so fun, exciting, and helped me to get a better feel for the area. I definitely recommmend taking them up on the tours. I have been visiting temples around the country, and this temple was my favorite. We were the only ones there. It was natural, artistic, and incredibly serene. Mina told me about Shintoism and the gods and imperial family honored at the temple. It was so cool to go to a temple with such a knowledgeable person. The waterfall is an exciting and scenic 20 minute hike. The water is crystal clear and the falls are beautiful (this is coming from someone from Hawaii who seems out waterfalls whenever possible). I highly recommend this trip; In the summer this would be an...

  • We were greeted by chappy and moe at the shuzan bus terminal in kyoto after a 2 hour ride from kyoto station and they took us to their house by car. The 2 are very relaxed and easy to get along with. They offer bicycle hire, tours, breakfast, lunch and dinner and theres a lot to see if you're interested in visiting the rural/country side of japan. Would def recommend if you don't mind a really quiet vibe.

  • This place is wonderful! If you are traveling through Japan and wish to spend some time with locals then I highly recommend. It is located in a beautiful mountain area and the scenery makes the bus ride feel like nothing. I managed to commute to Kyoto and back easily with the JR bus. They also offer activities while staying there. Everyone was very friendly and polite. Most important, the food is amazing!! I think young travelers or married couples will enjoy most of all. Overall, I had a great time and wish I could have stayed another day.

Me and my business partner have moved to a place called Keihoku. It's only 1 hour north away from center Kyoto, and you can enjoy majestic mountain and river scenery, fresh air, and meet heart-warming people. We can also offer a unique nature tour for you!
-The Space- A room available from 2 nights. The space is a Japanese-style room (和室 Washitsu) with abundant space for 2 to 3 persons with Futon sets. Very comfortable with sunlight coming in the morning. If you are more than 2 guests (up to 6), we can prepare another room and it's a Western-Japanese mixed style room which can accommodate 2 to 3 persons as well. High ceiling, one bed and air conditioner equipped. (I have another listing for this room.) Family discount: A child under 13 years old is charged a half of an adult price.
-The Neighborhood- Behind the house is a small hill, and mountains if you walk a few minutes further. We often encounter wandering deer and fox at night and have chance to hear deer whistling in high tone (or frog or cricket depending on the season).
  • Great little place in a sleepy town! Kei pays extra attention to you as host, and goes out of his way to make sure you are comfortable and entertained. Very nice people!

  • Staying at Kei and Midori's house was wonderful. Although it was a relatively short stay, there was something special and magical about it. Kei and Midori are both very warm people and make great hosts. We have spent two cozy evenings with them with lots of laughs. There was so much to talk about, it was like spending time with very good friends we hadn't seen in a long time. Also we've learned so much about Japanese culture from them. We spent a very nice day in Keihuko area which is really lovely. We enjoyed the beautiful house, the nice tatami room and Midori's food. We all felt right at home and our kids are still talking about Kei and Midori. We hope to come back!

    Tomas2014-05-23T00:00:00Z
  • We had a very nice stay at Kei and Midori's house. They are very likeable hosts, easy to get on with and great with children, and they made a real effort to show us some of the hidden gems of the area. The tatami room was large enough for the four of us, providing for a quiet night after exploring the mountain landscape and enjoying Midori's delicious dinner too! Thanks guys!

  • It has been a pleasure for us to stay at kei's place. The beds are comfortable and every part of the house is clean and tidy. The environment around is quiet and the air is fresh. Plus, the hosts, mei and midori are very friendly people(and good cooks too!) who are fluent in english. They kindly planned a tour for us to visit the rural and agriculture scene in kyoto during our stay and introduced us to many great people there. We enjoyed the time spent there a lot. Highly recommended for those who are interested in experiencing the country live of japan/kyoto(:

  • If you are looking for a relaxing place in the countryside near Kyoto, here you are ! Kei and Midori are warm, great hosts. They live in a lovely house with traditional Japanese beds, and they cook a great food. This part of Kansai is seemingly not a tourist place, the area is very quiet, somewhere between country and mountain, and the wind blowing in these huge trees all around will definitely calm down anyone seeking for another Japanese experience. A highly recommended spot !

  • Our experience at Keihoku was relaxing, a great getaway from the big city. We enjoyed our time with Kei and Midori, sharing our experiences and culture differences. Midori is a very good cook, we had hot pot and requested japanese style breakfast! We also had deer meat a must try if ur in Keihoku!

  • Midori was extremely welcoming, we felt right at home! The neighborhood is very quiet with friendly neighbors whom I met a few while taking an early morning walk to collect flowers for our Ikebana class. We had my favorite day of our entire Japan trip touring around the mountain countryside with Midori. I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it!

  • Words can not describe the experience of staying in Ryo's cozy space during such a beautiful spring time. As the JR 3 Bus climbed further and into a more remote part of Kyoto, I knew I was in for a truly rustic experience. It appeared to me like the Appalachia of Japan, with climbing slopes, and hills. Ryo's studio space is just as precious and welcoming as she is, and exposed to me to a type of living much removed from the hustle and bustle of the Shibuya area I was accustomed to in Tokyo. There is an overall warm feeling invoking all the senses, from smelling the wood in the work space to the natural soaps Ryo makes. The amenities removed me from my comfort zone, but in a good way! It took my coming to Japan to take a shower out of doors! Speaking, the surroundings are quite breath-taking. It was pleasant to take a stroll in the quiet district in the early morning, without all the hustle and bustle of distraction. In addition, Ryo's hand crafts are absolutely charming and whimsy, as well as her massage skills gave me a feeling of comfort. I was happy to have gone off the beaten path for a more authentic experience! Happily recommended!

From Kyoto station just 1.5-hour-travel by JR bus brings you to the mountainous side of Kyoto called Keihoku. While you stay in our house, you can experience real local life by sharing our place, having chat over dinner together with us. Pick up vegetables from our farm and take fresh eggs from hens and let's cook together!
Hololon is run by 75-year-old grandpa and 41-year-old his daughter. Our ancestors settled down this place around 8th century with other subordinates of the emperor's family. Near my house there is a beautiful zen temple founded by one emperor who retired his place in 14th century. You can walk around my neighbor, you can touch Japanese traditional culture and history which had supported the old capital for more than 1,000 years. For comfortable life, we have renovated 5part of our house by ourselves and carpenters.

Kimiya's old house retains the traditional Japanese character, has an elegant garden, while the interior space is also very spacious. The forest path next to the house is very quiet. The old elementary school nearby is very interesting which is worth seeing. In clear night, you see a lot of stars in the sky. Kimiya is very kind, also friendly to children. Kimiya is very good at cooking, delicious cuisine make us impressed.

Convenience shop is located in 400m away. 550 yen buffet restaurant is located in 380m away. Temple with a nice garden that is not well known to the people. Shrine there before the Kyoto becomes capital. There is a dam that can play with water and sunbathing. Delicious soba, Yakiniku-ya, pizzeria came from northern Italy, etc.
  • Our stay at Kazuhiko's place was awesome! The location was outside of the central city hustle & bustle, but easily accessible via a connection from the nearby bus station or by bicycle ( our preferred mode of transport :) ) Kazuhiko set all details for our arrival to the station and then picked up us with a guided tour of the surrounding area before arriving at his place. The place is perfect for 2 people with a well-equipped kitchen, bathroom stocked with toiletries and complimentary drinks and snacks. The surrounding area is quiet with picturesque views of the mountains. The provision of 2 bicycles for us was the cherry on top! We could freely explore the surrounding area and beyond care-free in the beautiful Kyoto sunshine. Cycling to the Imperial palace (Central Kyoto) takes around 30 min along the river side. :) All in all, would definitely recommend this place for someone who's looking for a quiet and scenic break in Kyoto whilst still having access to the city. 5*

  • English - Deutsch - 日本語: Thanks to Kazuhiko we felt at home from day one. We arrived at the nearest bus station, he picked us up with his car and even invited us for dinner! He was very forthcoming and tried his best answering all of our questions and inquiries. His family is very lovely aswell. The accommodation is as described, even cooking is possible. He lent us two bicycles, with which one can go as far as Kyoto city. The accommodation is far in the north of Kyoto, but with a 15 minute walk, you can reach the nearest bus station for the city bus. Bus line 9 departs every 10 minutes for Kyoto station, and a one-day pass for city busses only costs 500 Yen. As a couple, we’ve had an amazing one month stay and we can recommend Kazuhiko’s place to anyone who wants to discover Kyoto, especially if you stay longer.

  • Kazuhiko is very friendly, gave us a warm welcome and made us feel very comfortable. After we arrived he picked us up at the bus stop and showed us the neighborhood which is small and perfect when you need a little time-out from big city life. Also he gave us a lot of tips and information about what to do in Kyoto and in the neighborhood of his place. The apartment was clean, quiet and we had everything we needed: several restaurants, supermarkets and convenience stores nearby and the washing machine was also very useful. Thank you Kazuhiko for being a great host. We really enjoyed our first time in Kyoto at your place!

  • Very very very friendly host. really helpfull. picked us up at the bus stop (otherwise it would have been hard to find). nice, cosy and clean appartment. all the necessary things (for cooking, sleeping, etc.) available. Had a great and fun time! Diatance to the city is bit long (40 min by bike to Kyoto station). we like to cycle (provided for free) so this was no problem. at this place we really experienced the autentic Japanese living style!

  • If you like a quiet and rural neighborhood, easy but long bicycle rides along the river or through small streets in and around Kyoto, you are right to stay at Kazuhiko's house. You can reach within 45' most historic places, temples, shrines or shopping areas or in 5' the bus station or 25' subway station for all directions. The appartment is comfortable and clean, with all you need for a few days or even weeks. The best is the use of a bicycle and the wonderful fresh vegetables from the farmers in the neighborhood. If you are looking for more than just the obvious touristy spots, please stay at the bicycle base in northern Kyoto.

  • Mr Kazuhiko is a super nice person. He introduce the community when I arrive and his recommended temples are very nice. And I need to say thank you for drive me to the train station when I check out. I'm highly recommend to stay here if you like to see a different view of Kyoto.

  • Kazuhiko was absolutely lovely! he picked us up by car and took us for a ride to show us the neighborhood with the places to visit etc, we didn't expect so much kindess to be honest. The place was so authentic with the tatamis, and the kotatsu itself was a whole experience. We also enjoyed riding the two bicyles he provided us along the river ! When we arrived at the hanami time, the area looked like so heavenly that we gave up on visiting central kyoto ! regrets ? absolutely none ! I highly recommend kazuhiko's place for anyone who want to taste another side of japan, far from the crowd and close to nature.

  • The house is a little away from the center but it is a very quiet area. We spent two night and she was very helpful with us.

    Jon2016-11-05T00:00:00Z
  • Everything was nice, for this amount of money there were nothing to be upset about. Great for spending the night if there are two of you. The host is also very friendly and offers everything you may need while staying there.

  • We had a great time whilst we stayed within Nanami's home. The home was better than the description and we loved the village feeling of the area which was well situated for all the local shrines. Nanami is a great host and really did her best to make us welcome......when I hurt my leg she spent a long time caring about the problem. I would certainly love to stay here again.

  • Nanami came to meet us near the bus stop and showed us to the house. That was our only interaction with the host however she was reachable via Airbnb message when we requested to leave our bags on the day we left. Futons on floor not the most comfortable. Location was fine in a local town - quiet and nice with some local eating options. Bus comes regularly and takes about 50mins to Kyoto station. Bathroom could have been alot cleaner and less cluttered. We didn't spend a great deal of time in the house as we were out sightseeing mostly but to be honest it wasn't the most welcoming Airbnb we have stayed in. Ok option if you want budget accom with minimal interaction with the host and if you do not intend to be hanging out in the house.

  • Nanami was a great host. It was my husband and myself's first time visit to Kyoto and knowing that, Nanami offered to pick us up from the train station. Our room was very clean, with bath towels available for use. I didn't expect to have our own kettle in the room so we can prepare our own coffees. We felt like we were in a hotel. I will stay there again on my next visit to Kyoto.

Kyoto is is an ancient city of Japan, people say Kyoto blends the essence of Japan.Kamogawa is a river throughout the ancient city, it is combined by two tributaries from north mountain that one of them is called He Maochuan. There is a famous shrine called He Mao shrine where my house is located. We like the area because we feel it like pure land, we all want very simple life , so I gave the house a beautiful name "锄禾". We can't choose our own birth, but we can choose the life we want.
锄禾 is the name of the house. We always like to come here, like her quiet and serene, like listening to streams in the hills, like the seasons and plant changed its color, like the birds chirping in the morning every day, like running in the morning along the river, like the firefly in summer night. I found the best life style here. The house is a independent house, adjacent to the Shinto shrine very peaceful. There are a kitchen, a living room, a bathroom, a washroom and a courtyard in the 1st floor. There are two bikes available for free in the yard. The second floor is a Japanese tatami room, a double bed room and a washroom. It is a quiet area and the neighbors are kind. You will find a 24-hour convenience stores in left hand when you walk out the house. A napoli pizza restaruant is managed by foreigners 100 meters from the house. We often ask for delivery to enjoy the food and time in the house. You will also find good barbecue and Japanese traditional restaruants around. We do like to walk across the bridge there are all kinds of shops, buy some fresh fruits and vegetable there. 5 minutes by walk to the world cultural heritage He Mao shrine, Kyoto's oldest shrine, my favorite's shrine. In autumn, the shrine is fill with maple leaves. Many Japanese young people will hold traditional Japanese wedding ceremonies there. People will have a picnic and enjoy the beauty of nature there. The last weekend of each month, there will be a handmade market in the shigao Shinto shrine. Oh, the hand-made friends must not miss it "锄禾" is our second home, and we hope it will be the home of everyone in Kyoto.

  • Yusa and the team were so welcoming and hospitable. Nothing was too much trouble, and Yusa went out of his way to help us with last minute tours and so on. He is a lovely person and outstanding Air B n B host! We highly recommend the walking tour of the Ashiu forest. The house was fantastic, and a really unique experience for our family. Breakfast was plentiful and delicious. We took up the option of the BBQ set one night, and cooked it very successfully over the open hearth. What a treat. We highly recommend Miyama Futon and Breakfast!

  • We self-drove to Miyama so we met Taka at the supermarket, he helped us buy ingredients to make dinner later. After checking in at the office he took us to the house. It's absolutely gorgeous, and very spacious. Taka took time showing us around, and showed us the water music home in the room behind the house too. That evening we made a delicious deer nabe over the traditional hearth. The next day we did a fantastic bamboo craft workshop with Fumio which was hugely enjoyable. Really loved the entire experience!

  • House accurately reflected pictures and was even bigger than expected! It was clean, huge and can easily accommodate a large group. The area was beautiful, we especially enjoyed riding bikes and walking around the countryside. Our only regret was that we did not stay longer, it is very relaxing and peaceful. The cooking experience was wonderful and delicious and the cycling tour was beautiful, informative and interesting. The morning breakfast was outstanding and delicious. All staff were polite, welcoming, and helpful. We would certainly stay here again in the future.

  • Best experience ever!! Yusa and his crew picked us up at the train station, and took us (there was 6 or us) to a market for groceries before they took us to the cottage. Once we all arrived at the cottage, we immediately fell in love with the place. There's so much history to the place, super peaceful and very relaxing. And wonderful change to the busy Tokyo vibe. Very spacious and clean. Breakfast was included and it was delicious! Everyone in our group loved this place and wished we stayed longer. Until next time, we will be back!

Banja is an ancient folk house, preserved for eight generations of the same family for over 300 years."Banja" is revived to be your home away home.Your stay at Banja will be enjoyable and leisurely, breathing brisk morning air of the mountains, experiencing along standing traditional life with the furnace, sitting around a fire of the sunken hearth. You can also experience "making pottery" in our kiln. For family make special offer.
tatami - mat room for a group of 2 - 5 persons to reserve. You will enjoy the vista of village forests, fields and birds singing from your windows. There's an open hearth and a furnace in the living room. It will be an interesting experience to cook on the hearth with fire wood.

  • A truly authentic 300yrs old Japanese farmhouse in the outskirts of northwest Kyoto, the hosts are amazingly friendly and hospitable, and very knowledgeable of the surrounding areas, which provide opportunities like trekking and cycling. Central Kyoto reachable by bus in 1h time. The house boosts a fireplace which becomes the centre of social time spent at home. Breakfast and dinners are cooked on the fireplace or on a traditional stove, cypress wood burns leaving a beautifully scented smoke, and you can also take pottery classes taught by the house mistress, which is also an amazing chef and I believe one of the happiest persons on earth. :) Do not expect a 5 star hotel, bedroom/washroom/living quarters are ultra comfy and spotlessly clean but it is still a farm house (traditional Asian toilet is outside). What counts here is the chance of living with like the locals, which is priceless. Can't wait to go back!

  • I got a lot good experience here. Nice place, nice family, nice Food and nice view. We did BBQ in home, and the pork and beef were very fresh and delicious. All the picture are same with truth. I'd like traditional culture. This house is three hundreds years old, it is so mazing. Thanks a lot for 田中. I hope you are very well, take care.

  • Out of all the places we stayed in Kyoto and Tokyo, Banja was by far the best we have experienced. It might seem daunting how far away it is from the city, but it ended up being incredibly easy to navigate to the little village. And once you arrive, you immediately appreciate the worth of making the effort. The atmosphere and hospitality Mr. and Mrs. Tanaka gives to you during your stay will be nothing you have experienced before. They are so kind, welcoming and warm hearted. My only regret honestly is not staying longer, but I am appreciative that I even got a day to be there. For all of you on the fence about this, please trust in me and just try it out, even if it is just for a day. The tranquility, the kindness, the coziest futon bed, and the unforgettable meal where we hand picked our own vegetable was worth the hour bus ride up the mountain. You will leave the farm with an experience that will be with you forever and a newfound friendship that transcends language obstacles and distances :)

    Stephanie2017-04-06T00:00:00Z
  • What I absolutely love about homestays is the quality time one gets with the hosts. As I've never been to the area where Banja is, and there weren't many reviews online, I really didn't know what to expect. Just went ahead and booked the place anyway, and it was the best decision we've made! The only regret we had was not being able to stay for longer. We only had one night to spare. 田中 and his family made us feel right at home, and we really felt like family rather than AirBnB guests. Spending that cold night by the open fireplace, sipping our hot ocha and just chatting with 田中 and his family was one of the most memorable moments in Japan for me. We had super oishii (yummy) and healthy home-cooked meals made by Namii - with ingredients and rice fresh from the farm! We also got to buy some of the beautiful potteries Namii had handmade before we left. If you want to have a taste of old Japan, this is definitely the place to be. And this is definitely the best family you can be with to experience it. With that being said, be prepared to experience using an outdoor toilet (it's not as bad as you think, trust me!), soaking in hot bath, chopping wood and cooking over cast iron stove, eating delicious food with chopsticks, sleeping on comfy linings on floors which are laid with Tatami mats, and just soak in all that sun and fresh air! Keihoku itself has so much to discover! We missed out on adventures to some beautiful waterfall hikes, and just strolling about near the mountains. If you have seen much of Keihoku, and have more time to spare, definitely visit the villages nearby. If you want to see kayabuki (thatched roof) farmhouses, you can take a bus to Miyama, which is a nearby village. Do note that it's not a direct bus. You'll need to switch rides once to get there. There are 2 hiking routes which you can take in Miyama. The next time I'm in Japan, I will definitely make time to see 田中 and his family again. I really miss them!

  • Banja is an incredibly beautiful house, in a gorgeous location, with fabulous hosts!! I enjoyed every moment. Masa is a great tour guide - I would highly recommend staying longer than a few days and doing a pottery class with Nami too!! The JR bus was really easy to access from Kyoto station, and Masa kindly picked me up at the last stop in Shuzan (local town). If I were to visit again, I'd probably hire a car, but it's not essential. On top of all that, Nami's cooking was authentic, fresh and absolutely delicious!

    Jo2017-07-22T00:00:00Z
  • This is a truly japanese hospitality. Me and my friends really dont know where to start or rave about this AirBnB. We are arriving to shuzan by bus and mr 正則 help to picked us up at the bus station. the hospitality doesnt stop there. He also brings us around the village to check out few of his friends artworks and houses. We really enjoyed the walk. As we dont have the car to drive around, he brings us to the mart in the evening to pick up few things from there. As we are also muslims and it's a ramadhan months, he really ask us and confirmed what we can and cannot eat and what time we can break fasting. Mrs 正則 cooks very good japanese food almost like a complete kaiseki dining and we left feeling so full and with happy stomach. At night, all of us went to see a fireflies sightings (June-July) and it was nice. We also plays traditional japanese games with their son Taiki. Oh, i forgot to mention about the veggies we got to pick up on our own. we were so happy. This airbnb is not just an accommodation rentals, it feels like we have had a new friends and families from Japan. Their hospitality exceeds the limit. We were really happy to stay here. The comfy tatami bed left us sleeping so peacefully. Thank you mr 正則 for everything. We really appreciate it. It's just that, there is a lot of place to see nearby shuzan. We recommend to drive your own car to fully experience this area.

  • If you want to experience staying in an authentic Japanese house and village, this is it! We had an absolutely wonderful time at Akiko’s mountain retreat. The 2 families are delightful – warm, inviting and interested in sharing their lives and experiences with their guests. Coming from Kyoto at the high season for cherry blossom viewing, it was a nice respite from crowds and long lines. We headed off on our own each day for walks through the town and woods in addition to booking some activities – but the choice is yours in how you’d like to spend the time. Some of the side excursions we did were chopstick making at a lovely little woodsman café and a sake distillery tour and tasting. What a great suggestion from Akiko. If you’ve never had sake, this is the time to try it. Dining with the families was a chance for us to partake in delicious Japanese vegetarian (mostly) cuisine, with Jun and Mayuko at the helm of the planning and preparation. We would definitely stay here again, thank you Tao House!

  • Staying at Tao House was one of the most amazing experiences of my life, despite it being so short! The bus ride from Kyoto alone is impressionable. Akiko met me at the station and drove me back to the shared house. The house itself is spacious clean and traditional Japanese design, located amongst amazing forests and mountains. But what made the stay so unique was the hosts. I felt so at home straight away and very welcome there. Jun and I took a walk to have tea with a local artisan which was very special. When We came home, Akiko had run me a hot bath with sake. We made dinner all together which was delicious. Overall I could not recommend staying here enough. I can't wait to come back! Love xxx

  • Akiko, Hiro & Mayuko are wonderful hosts! They made every effort to ensure we were made to feel at home and enlightened us on the beauty which can be found in/around Keihoku. Extremely hospitable and polite family. Highly recommended for that getaway to explore a quieter side of Japan! :)

  • We wanted to see what Japanese countrylife was all about, and that's exactly what we got! Our hosts made us feel very welcome from the start. They are really friendly and funny :-) They treated us to a super tasty and healthy meal, and we chatted a long while around the table with some sake, beer, tea... Before going to sleep we could take a warm Japanese bath to keep us warm (it was winter!). The morning after, we visited the local shrine. A really great experience! Thank you!

  • Staying with Hero, Mayuko and Akiko was a real highlight to our stay in Japan. We stayed in winter so it snowed which was great. Plenty to do in around such as the local Sake distillery. The food was amazing and we just had a great time. Highly recommend staying here and thank you very much Hero.

  • I stay 4 days in this so nice family Tao's house. I coudn't forget Jun, Akiko, Mayoko, Hiro and Tao. All this little world is working everytime to offer comfort in a cosy and traditional framework. They offer quiet spacious rooms and create a zen atmosphere. Their environment is superb for lovers of the mountain and the site reveals a multitude of artists and unusual encounters. I will never forget the dishes of Mayoko, an amazing chef at your service. Family evenings in laughter and stories of Japanese life. Great people ! You'll definitely visit a smiling nearby making a stop at the entrance to the House to offer vegetables from his garden, a small tea break and smiles to share by the thousands.

  • Akiko is amazing host , we have warm welcome at the first we arrived. She had cooked dinner for us with vegetable from her farm and R'jung making great curry. We are very enjoy to stay in her house with the countryside life in Japan,Kyoto. Her neighbor is so friendly , and everyone surrounding has so kind to me. in the morning we rent her bicycle to the bridge with cherry broom, so fresh air in the morning, sunshine, great way to ride. We ride to play water in the river with a great clean water. After we went back to her house, she had cooked and prepared breakfast to us, and we went to chopstickers maker workshop with our own name on. Clean house, with cozy space. I never regard to pick her house. Hope to see you again, thank you for your great host.

The space is a Western-style room with abundant space for 2 persons (up to 3) High ceiling, one bed, one low table and air conditioner equipped. Very comfortable with sunlight coming in the morning. If you are more than 1, I can prepare Futon sets. If you are totaling more than 3 guests (up to 6), we can prepare another room and it's a Japanese style room which can accommodate 2 to 3 persons as well (I have another listing for this room). Family discount: A child under 13 years old is charged a half of an adult price.
-The Neighborhood- Behind the house is a small hill, and mountains if you walk a few minutes further. We often encounter wandering deer and fox at night and have chance to hear deer whistling in high tone (or frog or cricket depending on the season).
  • Highly recommended! I had an amazing time of the final days of my journey in Japan 2015 with Kei-san and Midori-san. Their house was as described and the neighborhood was clean, safe with a beautiful view. The "nature tour" I joined was extraordinary. It was worth paying 6000 yen because the most places Kei-san and Midori-san took us were unlikely in tourist books and those destinations were almost impossible to tour around without local geography. On the top of these, Kei-san and Midori-san were friendly and provided knowledgable guide.

  • Like a lot of reviewers said, staying at Kei and Midori's place was a highlight of my and my friends' trip. The place is cozy, clean and beautifully designed. Kei and Midori were wonderful hosts, to say the least. They arranged for us a tailor-made trip in Kyoto, where we visited Joshoko-Ji Temple, Obama town's fish market, and a beautiful shrine in the country side of Kyoto. We enjoyed the traditional home-made breakfast and dinner. Everything was up to perfection, would definitely recommend staying here.

  • Kei was a great host! I had a great time touring Kyoto and meeting his friends. We ventured into some off the beaten paths and I really appreciated the moments that I spent there. His place is up in the mountains and is a lovely retreat from the big city. The room is very comfortable and there’s always tea available in the kitchen. I recommend taking his tours, the onsen at the Sea of Japan, sake tour, waterfall hike. They were a great way to get to know this beautiful part of the city and support the local community. I came upon this listing by chance when looking for accommodations in Kyoto and I’m so grateful that I stayed here. Thank you Kei for your hospitality! This was an amazing part of my journey!

  • Kei is a super host ever and I feel so lucky to meet him.He speaks English much better than anyone else I have met in Japan. Thus talking with him was a real pleasure. We have fun talking with each other, discussing the culture differences and historical events. Some topics considering the relationship between China and Japan are sensitive, but kei just stands on the neutral side and his opinions were really agreeable. As a tour guide himself,he took us visited the Keihoku area a whole day.We visited old temples, local houses and enjoyed the quite and artistic scene of Japanese countryside so much.Kei also explained the religions, the history and culture of Japan along the way. I personally think anyone who wanna see another side of Japan should come to Keihoku, where you will embrace the nature and feel quite and relaxed from the inner heart. Also, for anyone who is curious about Japan,Kei is a host that you don't wanna miss. Thanks to god,Thanks to the power of nature that brought us to Keihoku.I will remember this journey forever.

  • My wife and I stayed with Kei and Midori for two nights and had an amazing time. We were able to go on a sea tour to pick up fresh seafood and visit a chopstick workshop as well as spend time visiting sites around Keihoku. Midori is a terrific cook and the meal we had at their home was delicious. It was also a great experience learning to make pottery from Midori's friend, Nami, at a workshop in the area. Staying with knowledgeable guides like Kei and Midori was one of the highlights of our trip and we learned so much touring and talking with them.

  • If you want to understand Japanese culture and another side of Kyoto, Kei's accommodation is definitely your best choice. This is truly the best days I had in Japan, its difficult to find a host who can speak several languages, share critical cultural or political views with you, of course he will adjust the itinerary according to your wish and your curiousity. Kei is s(PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)nformative that he can answer most of your questions about japan. We shared views on learning languages, musics, books, food, sake, we were more like an old friends than a host-client relationship. The experience during these two days was incredibily amazing as i got a chance to visit a woodcraft artist and local old Japanese house, listen to their own story with the help of Kei, as he did all the translation for me, even taught me japanese. The house is clean, quite and super comfortable. its just the place i need to release pressure, i am sure i will come back in the future and introduce Keihoku & Kei to my friends.

  • Staying with Kei and Midori was one of the highlights of my trip to Japan. It is a real treat to get a bit off the well worn path trodden by tourists to Japan and get some 'real' experience in the countryside just outside Kyoto. Even better - having access to friendly and open minded hosts who speak great English means you gain insights into culture, politics and history that would be very difficult to find otherwise. Kei and Midori were kind enough to include me in some of their social events and sake sampling. And Midori went to great lengths to sort out my accommodation for the next stage of my trip. I can't recommend highly enough going to stay with them! Thank you Kei and Midori and I hope to see you in Australia one day!

  • Reached the house at about 7pm, and was warmly welcomed by Kei. He speaks perfect English, so no trouble communicating with him. Was looking for dinner, and we went over to a friend's house, where we had the best Japanese hotpot ever! Got to mingle with his friends from the area and get to experience Japanese hospitality :) Had to leave early the next morning, so I didn't get to see more of the area, but will try to come back the next time :) Highly recommended!
