Just booked in Henfield

Our timber clad garden pod is up-market glamping, with a view to the Downs. Close to Brighton and a walk across fields to the village. On sunny days, open up the folding sliding doors and enjoy a drink on the decking.
The pod is just over an hour from London and 20 minutes or so from Brighton. At the end of the garden of our Sussex farmhouse, the view is through the trees and towards the Downs. The pod has a comfortable double bed, sofa, table and chairs. There's a shower room and a small kitchen area, fridge, microwave, toaster, kettle. (The hot water is from a small tank, so showers need to be speedy.) For heat, there's a wood-burning stove and a basic electric heater. It's just a few minutes walk across fields to the village of Hurstpierpoint, with several pubs and places to eat. You will have your own key and can come and go as you like. The pod uses the same driveway as the main house, with plenty of room for parking. The house is approached down a rutted farm track, so best not to bring a low slung car! Although there's no fencing between the pod area and the farmhouse garden, directly in front of the pod there's its own area of lawn and a magnolia tree, with a stream beyond. There's also easy access to a footpath to the village across a bridge in the garden. If you have a dog who can be trusted without fences, then he or she is welcome. We have a friendly black labrador called Monty. Tim, Pippa and family are very happy to help with any queries about the pod or beyond. Monty the labrador will almost certainly bring an old shoe to welcome you. We are close to the Downs National Park, as well as having Brighton 20 minutes away. So if you want to walk and visit the village, then it's easy. But it's equally easy to pop into Brighton for sea air or shopping. We are located close to the A23. The nearest station is Hassocks, which is 10/15 minutes by cab. This is the Brighton line to London Bridge/ Victoria. Gatwick airport is 30 minutes by car. There is a limited bus service to Brighton from the top of the track (10 minute walk to the bus stop from the pod). There's also cycle hire at the station in Hassocks: (URL HIDDEN) The pod has its quirks. Squirrels sometimes like to frolic on the flat roof and if it rains heavily with the wind in the wrong direction, you might get a bit of rain down the chimney. Of course, we think that the good quirks outweigh the imperfections. You will find eggs from our hens on the sideboard and a bowl of fruit when you arrive. Plus the ingredients for tea and coffee. The double bed will be made up and there will be clean towels. There is a sofabed in the pod which could be used to accommodate a young family if you don't mind being a bit cosy. We charge £10 extra per night for an extra person to cover costs of making up the sofa bed. If you have a baby or small person(s) they can go free.
We are close to the Downs National Park, as well as having Brighton 20 minutes away. So if you want to walk and visit the village, then it's easy. But it's equally easy to pop into Brighton for sea air or shopping.
  • A Beautiful setting! Had a wonderful stay with my Mum. Pippa was very friendly and helpful! Would highly recommend to anybody, thanks Pippa & Family

  • We had a very relaxing stay. The Pod was as described. Really lovely setting. And Pippa was helpful and welcoming.

    Anna2015-07-20T00:00:00Z
  • Pippa was a great host, we had everything we needed and more. One of the best places we stayed. The Pod itself is so unusual yet comfortable and quiet. We would definitely recommend The Pod to everyone. Monty made our stay, he would often come to breakfast with us and our dog Miso. Beautiful place in a beautiful setting, we loved it.

    Chloe2014-09-23T00:00:00Z
  • Pippa set up everything perfectly for our arrival - although she had to be out, the wood was there, the bed was made, and there were even snacks waiting for us in the kitchenette. I highly recommend this 'pod' for anyone looking to hermit away for the weekend. The stove is so warm, the bed is cozy, there is a wonderful library and there are extensive walks right outside your door (quite literally.) The nearby village (5 minutes) has just enough pubs and shops to keep you going as well!

    Ana2014-11-18T00:00:00Z
  • Good communication ahead of trip. Pippa was away but Tim made us feel very welcome and was helpful advising us on places to eat, lending a torch to walk to village etc. Eggs , milk ,fruit bowl and tea provided was nice.

    Clive2016-10-16T00:00:00Z
  • Pippa is a wonderful host, she goes above and beyond to make your stay perfect, a great place and perfect retreat for any couple,we loved our time there and will defiantly return next year

    Jan2016-07-15T00:00:00Z
  • Pippa was very helpful and there when we needed her. Loved the privacy of the pod and central location.

    Anna 2014-06-30T00:00:00Z
  • Good stay peaceful relaxed and informal. Pippa is very nice and Monty is very friendly! Everything you need is there. A TV would be nice for when its raining but overall a very enjoyable stay. Word of caution the road is quite rutted as pippa points out my baby sports car struggled so heed the advice!

Welcome to my 100 year old cottage in the heart of the South Downs. The house is designed to be both modern and cosy and is just a short walk from the village shops. I am surrounded by beautiful countryside and am 20 minutes from Brighton.
It is quiet and peaceful and within walking distance to countryside, woodland, farm shop and the village.
Henfield is a very friendly with a great community. There are pubs, cafes and two supermarkets in the village. We are close to the downs link which runs to Shoreham in one direction and to Guildford in the other direction, great for walkers and cyclists. The South Downs country park is 4 miles away.

  • We had the most wonderful weekend at Bluebell Lodge. It was all brand new and just right. Really well equipped kitchen, the most comfortable sofa and just really cosy. Lovely to be able to open the bifolding doors completely! Wonderful country walks, nice child friendly pubs nearby and only 15 min drive from Devils Dyke, which we would recommend. The kids loved the playground. Nice campsite too- although we did appreciate the comfort of the cabin when the rain came:-) very helpful and friendly hosts and onsite staff. Would definitely come again!

  • Lovely, very new, Lodge set in a quiet area at the side of a large campsite. There's a good campsite shop and also a kid's play area. The lodge offered us just what we needed for a short stay with our two small boys.

    Vicki2017-05-31T00:00:00Z
  • A fantastic break. The Lodge is very clean, extremely well stocked and so comfortable. From the little welcome note and complementary bottle of fizz, which we enjoyed sat on the outdoor sofa, to the very accommodating, welcoming and helpful owners, our visit was perfect. Bluebell Lodge is set in its own small copse a very short walk away from the delightful, quiet and old school camp site, with its 'proper' camping shop which seems to sell everything. I heartily recomend it and we will definitely be back.

    Erika2017-08-07T00:00:00Z

  • This was the best trip ever. Cathy was so kind and helpful. And the location is perfect. 1 minute walk to to bus and then 15-20 mins into Brighton. However, we could have just stayed at the property our whole trip. The hut is beautiful and the property is calm and lends itself to a lot of exploring. Definitely the place to stay if you want to be near Brighton but you don't enjoy the hustle and bustle of staying in the city.

    Emma2017-04-10T00:00:00Z
  • Cathy's little shepherds hut is the most perfect place to enjoy complete relaxation and is so cosy. The attention to detail is outstanding and Cathy went above and beyond our expectations of a host. We cannot recommend this place highly enough, book it now, you won't regret it! We can't wait to return.

    Charlotte2017-04-03T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful little hideaway highly recommended! Cathy is such a warm person and made us feel very welcome. Breakfast was great, the woods are beautiful and the candles at night were magical. Would also recommend the trek to Devil's Dyke!

  • Super host and super place. Catherine was very kind, smiley and helpful. The hut is just incredibly cosy and beautiful with a lovely wood fire which makes the stay even more magic. It's around 10 minutes walking from Catherine's house, very private and just a superb experience if you are looking for privacy, nature and peace. breakfast was awesome and Catherine even left us a welcome present- bottle of prosecco- and some wood to make our stay nicer. Ideal for ny occasion, we will definitely be back. Thank you for everything!

    Louise2017-05-07T00:00:00Z
  • We had an amazing time at Catherine's shepherd's hut and would highly recommend it. It was so peaceful but yet very convenient to get into Brighton on a direct bus (bus stop a few minutes down the road and journey took 30 minutes). Very good communication from beginning to end and Catherine was very flexible with our check in and check out times. Lots of nice and thoughtful little touches in the hut and the beautiful breakfast was such a treat. Will be back very soon! Thanks Catherine!

    Eliza2017-07-16T00:00:00Z
  • We had an amazing stay in the Shepherds Hut, just what we needed for my partners birthday and our 7 year anniversary. The hut is perfect and the little added touches, such as a bottle of prosecco and breakfast make this place so special. I could not fault my stay at all, Cathy was so kind and helpful. Our ‘Rustic Retreat’ is exactly that. It's a cosy garden dwelling, fully equipped for glamping for a one night stay or longer. We’re situated mid-way between the villages of Henfield and Hurstpierpoint and within walking distance of The Wheatsheaf restaurant pub. Hickstead Showjumping Course is close by. You'll be self-contained and have your own key. We're friendly and welcoming here in the Sussex countryside, but just 15 minutes drive from Brighton too...
Our cabin is within the garden of our Sussex property with a choice of sleeping accommodation: either up on the half-mezzanine where there is a double futon, or downstairs on the sofabed. There is a sofa and armchair, table and chairs. To keep you cosy, there's a wood-burning stove with plenty of fuel and a basic electric heater. There's a shower room and a separate loo, an equipped kitchen area with fridge, microwave, counter-top oven, gas hob, toaster, kettle. Hot and cold running water, TV and an electric shower. The Retreat shares the driveway with the main house and several other properties, and has its own parking space right outside. There's a wooden gate to go through right outside the cabin, which leads into a peaceful part of the garden where you are welcome to sit and relax on the garden furniture; enjoy coffee; or eat a meal al fresco. There's easy access to public footpaths from across the road, which take you to the village of Blackstone and onward. It's a short drive to Henfield for most things you might need. Well-behaved dogs are welcome if kept on a lead. They can be walked in our adjoining field. Sally and Rick both work from home and are always happy to help with any queries about the Retreat or beyond. We’ll try to accommodate any requests to make your stay more comfortable. We are close to the South Downs National Park, with the Devil’s Dyke and Saddlescombe Farm to visit. It’s equally easy to pop into Brighton for sea air, sight seeing and shopping. The Retreat has its idiosyncrasies; if it rains heavily with the wind in the wrong direction, you might get a bit of rain down the stove pipe above the woodburner; and you use the stairs up to the mezzanine entirely at your own risk. Naturally, we think a stay at the Retreat is well worth it. You will find milk and bread plus fruit and the makings of tea and coffee ready to welcome you when you arrive, together with clean towels. There's the futon to sleep on if you don't mind using the stairs to the mezzanine floor. We charge £10 extra per night for an extra person to cover costs of making up the sofa bed too. If you have a baby they can come free. We do not provide a cot but there is plenty of room if you want to bring your own.
There is a network of public footpaths for walks and this is also good cycling country. We are close to the South Downs National Park, with the Devil’s Dyke and Saddlescombe Farm to visit. It’s equally easy to pop into Brighton for sea air sight seeing and shopping.

  • Bevelled had made a real effort to make me feel welcome and had provided what I needed for my dietary requirements. Very comfortable and spacious for me and my dog Pips. Set in a lovely garden with a beautiful tree.

  • Bev and Chris are excellent hosts. Their Cabin is amazing and attention to detail was faultless. Nothing was too much, from home made bread to providing a torch to guide us to the very near local pub. Could not fault anything and am looking forward to returning very soon.

  • The cabin is a brilliant place to stay and Bev is a wonderful host

  • Very charming, Beverly created a warm relaxing atmosphere in a beautiful setting. Her food was great and a welcome addition to my stay.

    Andrew2017-01-28T00:00:00Z
  • Very good place. The 'cosy cabin' is surprisingly big, centrally heated and Bev leaves out a great breakfast, ham, eggs and cheese one day and smoked salmon the next.

    Mike2017-09-17T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed with Beverley for the weekend attending a wedding nearby and she is a wonderful hostess who makes you feel right at home! She was really accommodating of our arrival time, very helpful with tips on how to get around and baked the most delicious bread and muffins for breakfast! The little touches really make it feel homely and special. Her and her husband are wonderful and their dogs are adorable! You will have a perfect stay at the Cabin!

30 mins drive Gatwick and 15 min drive Brighton. On the edge of the South Downs National Park. Very convenient for the airport, for enjoying the vibrancy of Brighton or for access to the countryside. A bright home with a large private garden and great walks on the doorstep. Good for gatherings. The house is a cosy semi-detached farm workers cottage, set in a very quiet location with wonderful uninterrupted views over open countryside. It's full of rare books which you can browse and buy.
This Sussex cottage is different! Every room, including the bedrooms, are home to shelves of fine books. It's a fascinating place surrounded by a big garden which leads onto pasture, woodland and a stream. Centrally heated with an open log burning fire it's a very charming and wonderful escape. Please note that the bathroom is located downstairs.
Albourne is a small hamlet on the edge of the bigger village of Hurstpierpoint where you'll find pubs, restaurants, takeaways, shops etc. Brighton is only 15 minutes away. We are very much in the Sussex countryside. There are loads of great footpaths for walking and the area is excellent for cycling.
  • We had a great time, the views are amazing, the garden secluded, the whole village is so relaxed and welcoming. Good food and inns in walking distance too. Perfect

  • We had a lovely stay in this charming and cosy cottage! The house is very well equippe. Armand was very helpful to organize our stay. Thank you for this lovely moment!

  • Armand's place was very nice, there is everything you need for a relaxing holiday. The garden is beautiful and the views are amazing. Very quiet, little rabbits in your garden each morning and a great place to visit Brighton and all other coastal villages. Even Londen can be reached by car in 70 minutes. Armand was a perfect host, he made us feel very welcome on arrival. Highly recommended!

  • This cottage is beautiful, in a lovely location with sweet views from every window. Very well equipped, warm and comfortable. Loved the bookish decor and spotting books we've wanted to read!

    Anne2017-04-17T00:00:00Z
  • Really beautiful secluded cottage full of wonderful books! Myself and my friends planned a stay at this property as a book club themed weekend getaway and was not disappointed! The place is full of charm and Armand suggested a local walk as well as a short route for a few of us to have a run in the morning :) was lovely and clean.. lovely little spot! Will definitely be visiting again!

    Anita2017-10-08T00:00:00Z
  • Armand is a very welcoming host. 5 of us stayed in this lovely, quirky cottage and found it very comfortable and had everything we needed. We were attending a wedding in Brighton, only about 15mins drive away,it was so nice to come back to the peace and tranquillity of this cottage after the hustle and bustle of Brighton! Some people may not like the bathroom being downstairs. An added bonus though are all the wonderful books throughout the house which you can browse and read if you have the time!

  • We had a great stay at Janice's house - it is full of character and being in the beautiful countryside it was very peaceful. Although we were out most of the time (we were working at a nearby event) it was a great base to come back to each night! We particulalry enjoyed having breakfast in the conservatory part of the kitchen each morning looking out onto the huge garden with lots of wildlife!

    Verity2017-05-29T00:00:00Z
  • Janice's house is very beautiful. The sun room is amazing and we spent most of our time in there. The garden is huge and well looked after, it was great to be able to sit out there and enjoy the sun, when it eventually came out! The kitchen is big and has pots and pans and everything needed to cook and prepare food. All in all we had a very good time at the house. We were unlucky with the weather, but like I said, the sun room is great so we were able to spend the rainy days there chatting, eating and drinking!

    Rebecca2017-07-24T00:00:00Z
  • It was a lovely space set in amazing surroundings, we really had no complaints and the hosts are just really nice people. Thanks again for the amazing trip, we'll be visiting again soon!

    Per2017-04-15T00:00:00Z
  • Although this home is hidden away it is only 5 minutes from a main road and usefully located for so many places to visit. The owner was really helpful and the location was incredibly relaxing. This home is intriguing and quirky - it rambles and has interesting, (intentionally) vintage decor. Highly recommended to stay there - it exceeded expectations.

    Pete2017-08-05T00:00:00Z
  • Janice's cottage is absolutely beautiful. Very traditional British and quirky furniture with everything you would need for a comfortable stay. Close to shops and amenities, but set far enough away to feel tucked away and out of the hustle and bustle. Only 5 minutes to shops and 20 minutes to Brighton (driving). The garden is large and the conservatory is the perfect place to enjoy the sunset in the evening. Thank you for opening up your wonderful home to us.

    Becci2017-04-09T00:00:00Z
  • The house was lovely; an idyllic spot on the South Downs; remote but easily accessible to Brighton. We were welcomed by our lovely host and shown around. The cottage was large, comfortable and spacious and had everything we needed. As the weather was so warm and sunny, we spent quite a bit of time in the garden beautiful garden. All in all a very pleasant weekend place to stay if you want to be near Brighton but in the countryside,. Brilliant value, felt very welcome to contact anytime if issues (Which there wasn't any) Felt very much at home and sad to leave on check out. Will definitely stay again when in the area again. Couldn't recommend enough

    Jessica2017-06-12T00:00:00Z
  • What a lovely quirky house. Quiet rural setting with huge garden and lovely sun room with bi-fold doors that open right back. Double bedroom downstairs with two singles upstairs are great if you have older kids who don't want to share. There's loads of room in this house, but be prepared to share it with an army of spiders/cobwebs and an overpowering damp smell.

    Mel2017-07-16T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic house full of character in a great location for getting to Brighton. We loved seeing the ducks and rabbits in the garden while having breakfast and dinner looking out over the garden.

  • We made a last minute booking with Jill and she was wonderfully accommodating. All of the little extras are what make the shepherds hut so special and it's only a shame we didn't get to stay longer. We had a superb stay and thoroughly enjoyed the walks from the doorstep, the stroll to the pubs, the hot tub and of course Jills excellent accommodation. Would definitely return to experience more of this delightful part of the world and hopefully stay a little longer next time. Thanks Jill

    Chris2016-08-20T00:00:00Z
  • The Shepherds hut does not disappoint. It is small and cosy and looks just like the pictures. We stayed in quite wet and windy conditions but the extra heaters and blankets kept us quite toasty. Jill showed us around the spectacular grounds. We had use of the exercise pool and hot tub, she had provided us with dressing gowns and umbrellas to get out to the hot tub which was a nice touch. The bed is an ideal size for someone who is average height, I couldn't see a tall man being too comfortable on the pull out bed. The use of the bathroom in be adjoining building was not too much of a hassle either. I can see us coming back in summer to appreciate the views and relaxing atmosphere.

    Laura2017-03-20T00:00:00Z
  • A gorgeous stay in the hut, so well presented and really cosy. It was all great. Such a lovely spot!

    Georgie2017-04-23T00:00:00Z
  • Jill & her Shepherd's Hut were a pleasure to visit; Jill welcomed us, gave us key info about the immediate area (pubs, walks etc) & fully accomodated us with breakfast essentials (bread, milk, eggs, fresh OJ, jams & coffee/tea etc)... despite us only booking the day before we travelled! Jill's property is easy to locate from the main road, just keep your eyes peeled for the entrance sign! The hut itself is beautiful, all of the small finishes are thought of & the best things come in compact packages! The accompanying bathroom facilities with use of the bathrobes for the hot tub was fantastic, really nicely kitted out & spotless! The views from the property are spectacular & we had fab weather which was perfect. The hot tub is a super addition & feels private yet your not far from the hut. We walked to Upper Beeding, explored the area up to Bramber Castle which has great views of the area & enjoyed a delicious pub meal. We cheekily stayed slightly past check-out as I needed to enjoy the hot tub in the morning sun, so BIG thanks to Jill for bearing with us while we moved ourselves! All in all a lovely way to spend our 2nd wedding anniversary in the countryside, thanks Jill & your great property!

    Rachel2016-09-14T00:00:00Z
  • We had a truly magical time at Shepherds Hut, Jill was very warm and welcoming, we were greeted by her cute dogs too who made friends with us! The hut itself is super cute and the facilities such as the bathroom, mini kitchenette and bed were all excellent. The little personal touches such as the fresh eggs, squeezed orange juice and baguettes were lovely. The views were stunning, panoramic scene of the downs and watching the sunset in the hot tub with a bottle of fizz is an absolute must. Perfect for a romantic retreat, or girly get away with a pal. I would thoroughly recommend. Five Stars!!!*****

    Sally2016-06-11T00:00:00Z
  • The shepherds hut was beautiful! We went on a cold weekend in January but the hut was so warm and cosy. Jill was a great host and the pool was an added bonus. I have already been recommending the hut to friends and family

    Kitty2016-01-25T00:00:00Z
  • The hut was cozy and warm-everything we needed for sleeping and breakfast. We spent the majority of our time in the pool house playing volleyball, relaxing in the sauna, and playing cards. Our NYE was spent in the hot tub with a bottle of champagne watching the fireworks in the distance. We'll be back. Thank you Jill! Our only regret is we saw your doggies only once.

    Andy2017-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • Jill was a great host and the Shepard's hut was a unique and enjoyable stay! The only down side was the weather during our stay which meant we couldn't use the hot tub as much as we wanted to.

A lovely cottage for two close to the South Downs and Sussex Weald – ideal for walkers and cyclists Little Lock Cottage is adjacent to its owners’ house in the midst of an arable estate and one mile down a private lane serving the farm and the cottages and houses located around it. There is an open plan sitting room and kitchen on the ground floor, with French windows opening out onto a sunny south facing patio area. Upstairs the cottage has a bedroom with a large double bed that can be split into two single beds if preferred. If you would like the beds separated please let us know when you book otherwise it will be made up as a king. Also upstairs there is a second sitting room/study, and a shower room. All of the upstairs rooms have sloping ceilings and dormer windows giving a very cottagey feel. The upstairs sitting room and bedroom are both dual aspect and very bright and welcoming. This is an ideal cottage for keen walkers and cyclists, being surrounded by bridle paths and footpaths, and within a very short distance of the Downs Link long distance path between Guildford and Shoreham. There is an outside tap for hosing off bicycles after any muddy outings, and secure storage is available for them in one of the owners’ garages. The patio outside the sitting room has a table and chairs for enjoying outside meals and barbecues, and a Lutyens designed bench for relaxing in the sun. Although this area is close to the owners’ house it is well screened and offers seclusion.
Little Lock Cottage is very centrally situated to enjoy a lot of Sussex. It is one mile outside Partridge Green village with award winning butchers, Co-Op, 3 pubs, Dark Star Brewery, hairdressers etc. As well as Stans Bike Shack, a popular tea stop haunt for cyclists Steyning and Henfield are a 10 minute drive away with more shops and eateries, and Horsham, Worthing and Brighton with larger supermarkets within easy driving distance. Fantastic walking and cycling locally as well as many country pubs and eateries. West Grinstead Station on the old railway line between Horsham and Shoreham-by-Sea is now part of the Downs Link. It features a railway carriage just beyond the old platform that displays information on the local nature and wildlife in the area. The Downs Link offers excellent walking and cycling opportunities and if you head south from the old station you will soon enjoy beautiful views of the South Downs as you head towards the market towns of Henfield and Steyning. The South Downs are within easy reach and the popular vantage points of Chanctonbury and Cissbury Rings are due south from Little Lock Cottage. They are both Iron Age hill forts although Chanctonbury Ring is the more famous of the two because of its ring of beech trees originally planted in 1760. To walk between the two rings is a distance of about three miles providing wonderful views over the Downs and out to sea while on clear days Chichester and the Isle of Wight are easily visible from Cissbury Ring. Heading north the market town of Horsham has good shops and restaurants to suit all tastes. It has retained much of its heritage with fine architecture on view, in particular along the Causeway which is lined with medieval homes that lead to the parish church of St Mary’s, while the Carfax originally a meeting of four ways is now a relaxing place to stop and enjoy a coffee. There are historic houses and gardens nearby including Parham House and Gardens, Nymans Gardens, High Beeches and Wakehurst Place. Wakehurst Place is an outstanding botanical garden with the world's largest seed conservation project, leased and run by the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew.
  • The cottage has two floors with bedroom、toilet and reading\study room on top floor, kitchen and living room on ground floor, facing a beautiful garden. • Liz and her husband were incredibly welcoming and Liz went out of her way to make the place feel like home, she was very kind to leave a Nespresso machine as well as filling a small fridge with glorious breakfast items. It is a perfect place for a retreat from the city with a luxurious king size bed with beautiful linen and decor. She put together a list of local spots that we found really helpful. The neighbourhood is extremely quiet and has the most idyllic country surroundings. Also one of the best showers I have had in a long while.

We was staying in the area for work so unfortunately we didn't get to spend much time at the house and take advantage of the balcony. Emma and Peter are lovely and great hosts, could have chatted to them all day. They had some great recommendations of where to go in the area. Yummy breakfast. We will be back!

I only wish we had been able to stay a week and not just a night. I couldn't praise the room, the house, the garden, the fresh breakfast or Emma and her husband enough. Stay here!! We will certainly be back!

  • We had a fantastic stay at Emma and Peters. We were greeted so warmly by them both and little Coco the dog! The house is in the most beautiful setting over looking fields, trees and sheep and our room was warm, clean and everything we needed. Emma and Peter recommended a good pub (The Royal Oak, just down the road in Wineham) so we were sorted for dinner and breakfast was just what we needed; light, wholesome and aplenty! Thank you very much for such a relaxing stay, we will be back! Fred & Meg

Our home is on the North side of the Downs in a lovely little village and 20 minutes drive to Brighton & Gatwick. We have a big garden and open kitchen dining area. We have one double bedroom and two single rooms but they can hold more if needed.
  • We had a really lovely stay at Miriam's house for three nights over New Year. There was efficient communication with Miriam including helpful directions to find and enter the house, which all went smoothly. The house was ideal for us, and surpassed our expectations as it is even nicer than it looks in the photos. We especially enjoyed the kitchen which has everything you need to cook up a storm, and the lounge with the wood-burning stove was a real luxury. Miriam had kindly left thorough instructions for using the projector as well, and the house manual was full of useful information. The village is very charming and well-located for exploring the Downs (we loved Devil's Dyke despite the awful weather!). I would recommend this listing to anyone and have nothing negative to say at all!

  • Very lovely house set in a wonderful, off road, quiet spot. However, do ensure to get detailed instructions from host as we got rather lost! The Satnav took us to the wrong location. Great kitchen/diner with lots of space. The cosy lounge with a log burning stove was glorious! Comfy bed and great bathroom with fierce shower! Huge garden - this house would be ideal for a family break with easy access to Brighton and the surrounding lovely countryside.

    Stevie2015-12-13T00:00:00Z
  • The house was just as described. It was comfortable, warm and cosy, and well equipped. Miriam was friendly and accommodating. The house is in a quiet and seemingly safe area amid lovely countryside. It is well situated; midway between Gatwick and Brighton. We thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas in this house. As the property has a large garden it would be a wonderful house to stay in for a family with children.

  • Exactly as advertised. Was great for what we needed and the bed was so comfy!! Great communication from Julie, answered all my questions promptly. Thanks for having us.

    Carrie2017-07-02T00:00:00Z
  • Property exactly as described. Julie is a warm and welcoming host and gave us information about local shops and places to eat. Cereal and fresh fruit provided for breakfast. We were in Sussex to attend a family birthday celebration in the next village so the location was perfect and Julie even offered to taxi us there. The property is within easy reach of the coast, Steyning and Nymans - all of which we covered in our short stay. We would be very happy to stay again in the future. Thanks Julie.

  • A friend and I walked the Downs Link Way from Shoreham to Guildford, and Julie's place was perfectly positioned for an over night stay. Julie let us treat the place as our own, with access to the kitchen. There were several evening eating options within walking distance. The bed was very comfortable which was most welcome after a 14 mile walk!

A tranquil place to unwind with family and friends. The Granary is a luxurious converted barn in rural Sussex. It is in the village of Fulking, six miles inland from the coast and Brighton in a stunning setting by the South Downs National Park. It has four and half acres of maintained gardens. It sleeps eight and the full height two story sitting room and a large and homely kitchen provide the perfect place for family gatherings or groups. There is plenty on offer nearby as well.
  • A lovely spacious barn at the foot of the South Downs. Gorgeous garden for a leg stretch before breakfast and fabulous walks and pubs nearby. Joanna is a very conscientious host.

    Jane2017-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our long weekend at The Granary and could have easily stayed for longer! Cosy sofas and comfortable throughout, we had a well needed rest from the hustle and bustle of central London and lots of great sleep! Everything was thought of to make it like a home from home, nice crockery/ bed linen/towels etc. Full size table tennis, ball games in the garden and speakers to play your own music through.. perfect. Specially loved the enormous garden and spectacular views of Devils Dyke!

Ideal location to explore the Sussex Downs and the South Downs Way as well as other rural walking routes. The property is located 5 minutes from the All-England Jumping Championships at Hickstead, and only 15 minutes from cosmopolitan Brighton. Car parking available, one friendly cat on site. A home spa is located at the property and in-room beauty treatments are available.
Elm Studio/Elm House/Mole Manor, London Road, Albourne Actually located on the Hurstpierpoint side of the road but part of the village of Albourne. Elm House located in the centre was originally known as Elm Villa and was built in the early 19th century when on what had recently become the main London-Brighton road. To its left is Elm Studio, a modern edition built in the same style, whilst on the right is Mole Manor which dates from the 17th century. Another building is attached to the south of this, out of shot, called Tipnoaks which dates from the same period as Elm House and is built in the same style.
Albourne, West Sussex Albourne is a parish in Sussex that lies a few miles north of the South Downs along the lower ridges of the Weald. Its position in the centre of the county has seen it swing back and forth between West and East Sussex at least three times and has been administered by the former since 1974. The parish is almost rectangular in shape and is bounded by Woodmancote to the west; Poynings to the south; Hurstpierpoint to the east and north east; and Twineham to the north west. The church lies in the centre of the parish away from the main areas of population and the network of footpaths that converge on it along with a lack of any archeological evidence suggest that there was never a settlement in the vicinity. The modern village of Albourne was originally two settlements; Albourne Street to the south and Albourne Green a little way to the north. The former is believed to have been created by the owner o Bishopshurst Manor with a number of houses laid out in equal sized plots along what is now called The Street. A number of buildings from the 16th and 17th century still survive here. A little to the north is Albourne Green centred around an old narrow green , of which the old pound still survives, that lies adjacent to the current road to Henfield. The small gap between the two was closed after the Second World War when the village expanded and was filled with small estates both privately and council built. To the north west on the Henfield Road is the scattered settlement of High Cross though most of the dwellings were constructed from the end of the 19th century onwards. Much of the rest of the parish is made up from scattered farms with a little ribbon development from after the First World War along Trusslers Hill Lane. However, the rural nature of the parish may come under threat from a proposed development to build a new town between the A23 and Henfield called Mayfields, though the exact nature of this development is yet to be finalised nor, at the time of writing in 2014, has any council agreed to it. Two roads run through the parish in a north-south direction, along the eastern boundary is an old droving road from Newtimber into the Weald which in the early 19th century became the main London-Brighton turnpike which in turn became the A23 in the age of the car. The road was downgraded to the B2118 when the whole of the A23 was dualled and straightened north of Pyecombe to the M23 in the early 1990s. To the west part of the parish boundary runs along the minor road that runs from Poynings Crossways to High Cross that is known as Shaves Wood Lane in the south and Trusslers Hill Lane at the northern end. The route continues northwards via Twineham Lane to Twineham and Bolney. The current main east-west route runs from Albourne Green from the old A23 to the A281 at Lidds Hill north of Henfield. Though old this route replaced a much older route than originally ran along Church Lane past the church through the hamlet of Blackstone in neighbouring Woodmancote parish before entering Henfield via Furners Lane. By Yeakell & Gardner's 1778-83 map much of this route was little more than footpaths. At High cross another road, Reeds Lane, branches off and heads east to Sayers Common. In the early 19th century the lane was given its own tollhouse at the western end to stop travellers getting on the main London-Brighton turnpike for free. The highway is still used as a rat run today for those coming from the west wishing to get on the A23. At the very southern end of the parish is Muddleswood Road, the current B2117, which dates from the early 19th century and was designed to link the old London-Brighton turnpike with the new one that later became the A23. The main waterway through the parish is Cutler's Brook from which the parish derives its name, 'stream next to the alder trees', which is a tributary of the River Adur which it joins north of Henfield, A number of minor streams head northwards from the spring line on the Downs to join it with the stream able to power a couple of mills during the medieval period. A couple of minor streams to the north feed into another Adur tributary, Herring Brook which runs through neighbouring Hurspierpoint and Twineham parishes. The village still retains its primary school which opened in 1844 and moved to its current site in 1961, however, it lost its post office and village store in 1977, local residents having to make the trip to neighbouring Hurstpierpoint, Henfield or Burgess Hill for shopping trips. The village pub, the Kings Head stood on the main London-Brighton road opposite the junction with the road to Hurspierpoint. It was rebuilt in 1938 and remained in use until the late 1990s when it closed down and is now offices for a software engineering firm.

  • Lovely garden, good food and a comfortable bed were highlights of this place for us. We did not see much of Nigel due to our somewhat hectic schedule, but when we did meet him, he was always a conscientious host. The bedroom is large, with an adjoining shower, the toilet is down the hall....not a problem for us, but could be an issue for anyone needing to get up several times in the night! Overall a good place to stay, with a very friendly cat :)

  • I have to say Suzannah's place was the nicest I've ever stay in on airbnb, and I've stayed in a lot. The house is beautiful, quintessentially English in the prettiest of countryside. Beautifully decorated with fine bedding and all the bits and pieces in the room you could possibly need. Suzannah goes the extra mile with her guests. She made me and my daughter feel very special in her wonderful space. She is accommodating and attentive, and we had a lovely chat over coffee the next morning. I would highly recommend Suzannah's place and the only downside was that my stay wasn't long enough. Can't wait to book again!

  • Suzanna is a warm and welcoming hostess. The fresh cake and tea was enjoyed by all of the 6 of us. The house is fully furnished and so comfortable. The bedrooms are charming and the beds are really comfortable. The only slight drawback is the bathroom and shower room are both on one floor so the top bedroom had no toilet facilities. Breakfast was a feast with so much choice. Beautifully cooked and presented. Overall this was a five star experience.

    Vicky2017-09-11T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely welcome with tea and cake, scrumptious breakfast, felt at home like a friend to stay. Suzannah is a very warm and kind person who made our stay perfect in every way. My sister and I were visiting local gardens and this was the perfect spot. Suzannah has a lovely garden, with different areas to sit and relax, and is full of twinkling lights when night time comes. We loved sitting around the chimenea in the evening with a glass of wine and having a natter. Good pub along the road for an evening meal.

  • We stayed for 2 nights at Primrose cottage. Susannah made us feel very welcome. The cake and tea and breakfast were to die for. Lovely comfortable rooms. Everything was so beautifully and tastefully decorated. I didn't want to leave. The garden was magical. Absolutely brilliant stay. Very very highly recommended.

  • I stayed at Susannah's home with my fiancé and my father in law during our South Downs Way walking holiday. Susannah's home is truly as lovely as all the other positive reviews have desribed. Our beds were so comfortable, the conservatory was just delightful and the garden setting was beautiful. Susannah was an absolutely exceptional hostess. For a very reasonable price Susannah cooked us the most delicious home cooked meal. This was to accommodate my father in law not being able to go out after a long day of walking. We invited Susannah to dine with us (over her delicious food!) and we swapped stories of living in London. The cake on arrival and amazing breakfast the next day were just as delightful as our dinner. Susannah also picked us up as dropped us back to the walking route. Overall, this was an incredible Airbnb experience and I highly recommend staying here!! I hope we will be back. Thank you Susannah.

  • I spent one night at Suzannah's house in December of 2016. One night wasn't enough!! Everything was perfect from beginning to end. Suzannah went above and beyond expectations for every detail. From letting me arrive before the scheduled time, to providing such a warm and welcoming stay. She even took the time to show me one of the local walks. The house was beautiful and in a spectacular position, the room was spacious and light, the bed comfortable, everything was clean and perfectly maintained. I can't recommend it enough. Just wish I'd stayed for longer to explore some the great hiking the south downs has to offer!

  • This unassuming caravan has been painstakingly renovated to a very modern finish. Open plan living areas consist of a large living room/lounge are, leading to a gally style kitchen complete with full size fridge and freezer, as well as a utility area that houses that washing machine and tumble dryer, perfect for those longer stays. The kitchen is supplied with all manor of utensils, cutlery and crockery, so no need to worry about bringing a tin opener. There's a gas hob, oven/microwave, and even a small dishwasher. The bathroom was surprisingly well sized, and the layout made great use of the available space, including a bath tub, with a built in shower. Incidentally, the hot water is fed through a boiler system, so there's no fighting for the hot water in the morning. The bedroom is large, with list of storage/wardrobe space if you are planning on an extended stay. Others have already mentioned the bed, I will only say that the mattress is a futon style that will not be suited to everyone's comfort level, however, I found the firmness from the framework of the bed to be a benefit to my back. The outside space is very idyllic, with a fire pit/bbq and some seating too. While we didn't explore the surrounding area that much, there is a small lake nearby you'll even get visits from the local rabbit colony, so great if there are kids staying. Our host Mark was both very friendly and helpful when we arrived (having not quite figured out how to gain entry to the caravan), and quickly drove around to show us how. We also had the opportunity to speak with Mark on the third day of our visit, and he was able to recommend a local restaurant in the nearby village of Hassocks, more than willing to share his knowledge of the area too, should you wish to go and explore. Overall a wonderful place to stay, be it for a short weekend break or even a couple of weeks, we liked it that much we are already planning a return visit later on in the year.

    Craig2017-07-08T00:00:00Z
  • Mark's holiday home was perfect for a mini break. The interior is newly decorated and beautifully presented. We were greeted with a warm welcome and Mark was brilliant at responding to messages if we had any questions. The holiday home is set within a farm which was very scenic and tranquil. If you're looking for the country break within easy reach of Brighton, this place beats any hotel or bnb for privacy and value. Loved it!
