Places to stay in Hartsop
Fermain Cottage is a charming lakeland home that has been lovingly renovated over the years to a high standard. It is a three storey property on a peaceful road, just a very short walk from Ambleside town centre. With ample parking for two vehicles, it is a perfect base from which to explore everything the Lake District has to offer. A tranquil, cosy and memorable place to stay, for up to five people. We are a strictly dog-free cottage.
The front door opens straight into a newly renovated and well equipped kitchen area. The oven, gas hob and microwave gives you plenty of cooking options. There is a fridge / freezer, kettle, Nespresso Coffee Machine and dishwasher. There are plenty of pots, pans, crockery, glassware and cooking utensils - everything you need for a self-catered holiday. Stone floors lead through to the living room where there is a dining table / chairs and two sofas. There is a wall mounted television and a wood burning stove which is lovely to sit by in the evenings (please bring your own logs). There are some books and games kept in the living room which you are welcome to use. The house is fully centrally heated throughout and the controls are on the first floor landing. The bathroom is a stunning focal point of the home. After a long walk in the hills you can take a soak in the claw-foot tub, or have an invigorating shower with our complimentary toiletries. There is also a double bedroom on the first floor and laundry facilities. The top floor houses a large second double bedroom and a smaller single bedroom. There are excellent views of the surrounding fells from the top floor. On prior request we can accommodate a sixth person on a pull-out bed in the single bedroom. It is a full size single mattress bed (see photos) and would probably be best suited for children. There is an additional charge of twenty pounds if you would like the sixth bed to be made up. Stair-gates and a travel cot can be assembled prior to your arrival, upon request. Being a traditional lakeland cottage, the staircases are quite narrow and steep, which may present a challenge to the elderly or those with mobility problems. Outside: The back door leads out from the living room to a small, peaceful garden with an area of grass and benches. There is a gravel driveway large enough for two cars. There is a large lockable shed in the garden. If you want to store bikes etc in there, I am happy to arrange for the key to be left for you. We are a strictly dog-free cottage.
Ambleside is a bustling and lively village where you will find plenty of things to do. Many happy hours can be spent wandering around the town and its interesting shops (with plenty of stops for coffees and cakes!). Ambleside is one of the best places to shop for outdoor gear if you are into fell walking / outdoor activities. In the evenings there are a number of restaurants within walking distance from the cottage if you don't feel like cooking. Pop into one of the many cosy pubs for a drink. The Lake District is home to some of the most spectacular scenery in the UK - there is so much to explore! Turn right out of the cottage door on foot and there are a number of beautiful walks up the hill and onto the local fells, which are suitable for most people and children. Or take a short drive for some more challenging walks in the area - Helvellyn on a clear day offers unparalleled beauty from the top.
  • Fantastic location and a warm, welcoming cottage with everything you need.

  • We’ve just got back from a stay with two toddlers and a baby and the cottage was perfect! The cottage had a baby gate, high chair and travel cot all ready and waiting for us. It’s in a great location so close to walk into Ambleside centre and some fantastic views from the bedrooms on the top floor. Gareth was really responsive to my messages, and check in/out was so simple. The cottage was spotlessly clean and felt so homely and cosy, we’ll definitely be returning here for more Lake District adventures!

  • Excellent accomodation, close to Ambleside centre (the hill to the cottage isn't as big as it looks on Google maps). It had everything we needed despite spending most of our time out walking or hiding in the local pubs from the weather! All in all, would highly recommend if visiting Ambleside or the Lake District in general!

There’s lots of helpful information to help you explore the local area. The location is stunning and so peaceful. We saw deer, herons, many rare birds. • We came for the first time in 2019 and decided to return this year. Really amazing place for a group of us to stay, and again had a beautiful memorable time together, this time enjoying the walk to the pub in Elterwater, and also up Loughrigg Fell.

    Naomi2020-01-20T00:00:00Z
  • Very good house, clean, warm, well equipped and very comfortable. It's bigger than appears on photos. Good tips on local area and suggested walks are excellent. Host (David) is quick to reply. (Just a little note - there is not a view from within the house). However in all other aspects this is a great house.

Thornythwaite Farm is a cosy smallholding tucked into the foot of the fells above Ullswater lake. We're lucky enough to have space to work and play in this beautiful place, and for our growing menagerie of hens, ducks, sheep and bees. The fells are on our doorstep with the lake a 5 minute drive down into the valley and Keswick and Penrith are both easily reached in quarter of an hour. Dockray is a 5 minute walk down the road and is home to The Royal hotel which serves great food all day.
    Cosy en-suite bedroom.
The farm stands alone in its own land, surrounded by fields but with easy access to the road and local footpaths. It is a quiet and peaceful location, lots of birdsong and lovely views. There is the 400 year old Matterdale Church just across the road and a smattering of five neighbouring houses. The village of Dockray is a 7 minute walk away along a footpath which follows the road where The Royal Hotel serves food and drink. Thornythwaite Farm is a great location, nestled in the hills in the valley of Matterdale, close to lake Ullswater and great for walks. It is a lovely hour’s walk through woodland and past the water falls (Aira Force) to the lake where boats (the Ullswater Steamers) make trips to various points around the lake including Pooley Bridge . There are trails along the lake as well as walks up into the hills. There is a Sailing centre in Glenridding for boat hire.
  • Such a beautiful place to stay. Jim, Victoria and the family are so very lovely. We'd recommend to anybody.

This location is an obvious choice for a walking holiday in the Lake District; hike to England's highest tarn, or take on the spectacular Jack's Rake up Pavey Ark as you tick off the famous Langdale Pikes; Harrison Stickle, Pike of Stickle and Crinkle Crags, Bowfell, Loft Crag. The adjacent Wasdale and Borrowdale Valleys bring more superb routes within easy reach, and are traditional starting points for an ascent of England’s highest summit, Scafell Pike. The Langdale Valley The Langdale Valley is the quintessential Lakeland location and Chapel Stile offers an ideal base from which to explore. With beautiful hamlets such as Elterwater, Little Langdale and Chapel Stile all to explore and breathtaking views around every corner the Langdale Valley is unique. The Langdale Pikes, Pavey Ark, Crinkle Crags and Bowfell are all close by. For those who prefer a more relaxing ramble rather than serious mountains the Valley will not disappoint as it boasts a wealth of lower level routes where you will find unmatched panoramas to charm you at every turn. If Mountain Biking is your thing then the area offers a huge range of interconnected bridleways to explore and if this isn’t enough only a short drive away (or if you are really energetic a 10km ride) is Grizedale Forest with its network of bridleways, forest roads and, the “piece de resistance”, the infamous North Face Trail. Whatever you are seeking in the Lake District the Langdale Valley will not disappoint.

The location is great and very convenient for the Lake District. There are plenty of things to do. We would definitely stay again.

  • Second time my boyfriend and I have stayed at Simon and Belinda’s and once again it didn’t fail to disappoint! We loved it, the little touches were beautiful and the passes to the Langdale Spa make the trip as we went after big walks! It even snowed during our trip making it extra Christmassy, would recommend to anyone... we love the area and the house!

    Liv2019-12-16T00:00:00Z
  • Fountain cottage is a sparkling clean cottage with top amenities, a lovely log burner and fantastic walks and restaurants on your doorstep. We could have easily stayed longer and wish that we could have. An absolute gem of a place with outstanding hosts providing lots of local information and thoughtful touches.

    Sam2019-11-25T00:00:00Z
  • We enjoyed a wonderful stay at Fountain Cottage, made all the better by Simon and Belinda’s quick responses and great communication. The house is spotlessly clean, beautifully and sympathetically decorated according to the age and style of the cottage. We couldn’t have wished for a more welcoming place to come back to after some fabulous autumnal walks. Thank you so much, we would love to come back if you’ll have us :))

  • Dorothy's converted farm building has great character but is very nicely decorated and furnished, with all the mod cons you expect from a holiday cottage in the Lake District

    Lucy2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • Dorothy helped organise my parents a lovely stay at her place. She was very informative and my parents loved the cottage, they found it cosey and very well located for the Lake District. Hoping to visit myself at some point!

  • Our stay at Dorothy's place was amazing. The accommodation is cozy and warm with plenty of space and everything you need for your stay. You are far enough out of town to be able to enjoy the peace and quiet and beautiful views but still close enough to all the Lakes District has to offer. Dorothy was extremely welcoming and friendly. Would highly recommend and would love to stay again!

The Conga is a cosy, quirky cottage, part of a small row of houses built in the 1840s. It has a south facing aspect and lovely views. Situated in a very quiet part of Ambleside, it is only a short 10 minute walk down in to the village and there are many scenic walks right from the door. Parking available.
  • Lovely location up steep back road in Ambleside, with lake views from the bedroom. Cosy, warm, clean. Jem made sure we had coffee and local tips.

    Kathleen2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • This is a brilliant place (the pictures are very accurate) in a truly beautiful location. The views are wonderful (including tons of birds!) especially from the comfy bed, which is deceptively large too. We cooked very easily in the kitchen with all crockery/utensils provided, and Jem had left us some coffee/sugar/oil. There are loads of local maps and leaflets too which were great. Cannot recommend this enough, it is a really cute place in a beautiful setting.

    Matt2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • A very charming place to stay in a great location. Well placed for a lovely walk to the high Sweden bridge and a short, though steep (if needed to be considered), walk into town. The bed is so comfy and overlooks a great view.

    Jodie2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay at The Conga. It was very cosy and it had lovely views. It is in a great location, just a short walk into Ambleside. We would definitely stay at The Conga again!

    Heather2020-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely little place, very cosy and felt really tranquil. All of the walks we did were a walk away from the house, it was nice to leave the car at the AirBnB! We will definitely be returning if and when we come back to the Lake District again. Thanks Jem!

  • Great place very communicative

    Jessica2020-02-07T00:00:00Z
  • Our favorite part of our stay here was the lovely view from the cozy bed. The place was very clean and had everything we needed. The location is also perfect in Ambleside with convenient parking. We enjoyed cooking several meals in the well-appointed kitchen and appreciated that the hosts compost. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to others.

On arrival we were greeted with a delicious homemade lemon drizzle cake and a bottle of Prosecco to enjoy beside the log burner. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to stay in the lakes.

  • Amazing little cottage in a beautiful location, right beneath the fells and within walking distance of Ullswater. We enjoyed lots of lovely walks right from our doorstep and having a cosy cottage with everything we needed to enjoy our stay, was lovely to come back to. Judith was great, welcomed us and even baked us a lemon drizzle on our arrival and left a bottle of Prosecco in the fridge! Couldn’t recommend enough and we would love to return in future.

The Garden Flat is in a wonderfully peaceful location overlooking Ullswater with panoramic views of timeless yet ever-changing fells, lake and sky. Experience it all from the bay window seat, sofa or even the bed, from the bench outside or on the lawns of Wreay Mansions. Step out of our front door in to an unforgettable landscape. We're on the Ullswater Way walking route and Pooley Bridge is close by. Enjoy a pint brewed at the Brackenrigg Inn. Fine dine or wild swim at Another Place.
This superbly-situated flat has already enjoyed some big changes – the start of a transformation to make it the perfect place to enjoy Ullswater. There is an open plan kitchen/dining area/lounge with new John Lewis oven, hob and dishwasher, new pans by Green Pan and a striking teal sofa by Gallery Hudson. In the bedroom we have a new Ercol Teramo double bed, and you can enjoy luxurious linen from Tielle Love Luxury – we discovered it at the fabulous Pig hotels chain. There's a new Sony Bravia TV with around 80 channels and radio stations available and if you have a Netflix account you can connect up. And you can listen to your own music using our Minirig speaker. The bathroom has underfloor heating, a bath and a shower. There is a lobby so you don't need to bring muddy boots or wet gear in to the flat. And a private parking bay is included. The flat has an impressive sandstone portico and a huge bay window where the views of Ullswater and the fells – including Helvellyn – are unforgettable.
Wreay Mansions is a cluster of apartments converted from a historic 19th century hunting lodge with elevated views of Ullswater – Wainwright's "loveliest of lakes" and the inspiration for Wordsworth's poem I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud. The new Ullswater Way walking route is at the end of the drive. Just down the hill is the Brackenrigg Inn with more great views, food including Sunday lunch, its own microbrewery and – in winter – a big, roaring fire. Bustling Pooley Bridge – with its pubs, shops and tea rooms by the river – is less than two miles away. There is a new temporary footbridge and free car park to use until the new stainless steel crossing opens this spring to replace the 300-year-old one swept away by floods in 2015. From the flat you can easily reach attractions like Aira Force waterfall, owned by the National Trust, and the Ullswater Steamers. You can ride, cycle, fish, sail, paddleboard or even wild swim nearby at Another Place hotel, which has fine dining and great bar food. The Garden Flat is great base from which to explore the rest of the Lake District including Keswick, Windermere, Buttermere and Grasmere – all around a scenic 40 minute drive away. Other great places to eat include 1863 Bistro in Pooley Bridge or the famous Sharrow Bay hotel on the opposite shore. Historic houses Dalemain (5mins by car) and Lowther Castle (20mins) are close too. Penrith, the nearest town, has excellent shopping facilities and a great Tourist Information Centre. As well as a Sainsbury's and Morrisons, there are brilliant regional stores like Booths and Cranstons Cumbrian Foodhall. Before arriving you could also stock up at the renowned Tebay Services near Shap on the M6, a family-owned site with its own farm and butcher. The company also owns the petrol station and store at Rheged arts centre you'll pass as you head from Penrith to Watermillock. Fuel is competitive and there's great local food and drink on sale.
  • This is the perfect getaway! Views are stunning, hosts are so helpful and thoughtful with some lovely touches (choc, wine and beer gifted to us!) Lake ullswater is a 5 min drive as well as the amazing Air Falls waterfall. Windermere is just an hour away and there’s some great pubs/ restaurants with lots of choice. We will be back again in the summer

    Alicia2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • My partner and I spent two nights at the Garden Flat. It was absolutely lovely and the perfect place to wind down and enjoy nature. The view is incredible and the flat is located on a quiet hill. The pub at the bottom of the hill is perfect for some tasty food that will fill you up for not too much money. From the house it's very easy to get to the Ullswater Way that will take you through the hills. Definitely recommend! Best wishes, Lisa and Scott

Check in process was all very simple with a lock box and the view from the apartment, across the yard and to the lake/mountains is stunning no matter the weather! The Lake District, also known as the Lakes or Lakeland, is a mountainous region in North West England. A popular holiday destination, it is famous for its lakes, forests and mountains (or fells), and its associations with William Wordsworth and the other Lake Poets and with Beatrix Potter and John Ruskin. A National Park established in 1951 covers an area of 2,362 square kilometres. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. The Lake District is located entirely within the county of Cumbria. All the land in England higher than 3,000 feet (914 m) above sea level lies within the National Park, including Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England. It also contains the deepest and longest bodies of water in England, Wast Water and Windermere.

  • You must stop here, everything about the place is perfect. There are so many thoughtful little touches that elevate staying here above other places, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone. The advice I would give to anybody staying here is to take a walk down the road you drive up to arrive, then hang a left at the end up a public footpath and climb directly up the peak in front of you, the views on the way up and indeed at the top are some of the best in the country.

The views are stunning and the sheep and chickens out the back were very friendly! Lovely little touches made the stay even nicer, fresh cake and eggs from the farm were delicious. Close enough to Ambleside to feel part of the town but still feels like you are out in the fells. We hope to be back again! Thanks Sarah

  • A lovely little gem of a place for two people to stay in comfort in a lovely village. Beautifully appointed to a very high standard and great views to boot. Throughly recommended - although maybe I shouldn't say that as it will make it harder to re-book 😎

  • A fantastic place to get to know the Lake District. Perfect for a couple. The house has everything and has many touches of good taste. Waking up watching the mountains from the bed is a luxury. The situation as a base camp for excursions is phenomenal.

Set back from the main hall and nestling in its own private woodland garden is the former Dairy. The dairy offers accommodation for up to 2 (a couple). The layout is fairly unique with mezzanine type sleeping accommodation via a steep wooden ladder. There is a log burning stove in the living room. The Dairy has a fully equipped compact kitchen and a shower room on the ground floor.
Tea and coffee basics are provided for your arrival so you can arrange a hot drink before you unpack. Unlike other venues, we provide tea towels, an oven glove , cooking oil and salt and pepper with the intention to make your stay as stress free and comfortable as possible. Due to unique style of the Dairy, it is not suitable for those who struggle on their feet. Unavoidable stone steps lead down to the front door. Prior to arrival you will be sent an introductory induction video and need to confirm you have seen this.
It's a lovely area. Mobile phone signal is limited to the Vodafone network at present.
  • The Dairy is the perfect stay for exploring Ullswater and the surrounding area. It is perfectly equipped with everything you will need. It is very cosy with the fire and being able to see birds, deer and red squirrels from the window was very lovely!

  • An exceptional little place and if you like quirky The Dairy is the place to stay. Everything on your doorstep...a huge bonus to forget about your car once you arrive. Fantastic large enclosed garden...Gus our Labrador didn’t want to come home!

  • A great scenic spot! We had a lovely weekend for my boyfriend's birthday made even special with a bottle of bubbly on arrival. Everything was clean and up to standard! Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to visit the lakes!

    Melanie2020-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin is wonderful, feels like your own little piece of the forest. Cozy and warm and brilliantly situated. The recommendations given for food and nearby walks were also excellent.

    Radhwan2019-12-20T00:00:00Z
  • Before we arrived at Andy & Maggie's cabin, I was a little bit concerned that we would be totally isolated in the middle of nowhere. It turned out that, although this very cozy cabin is isolated in its own area, there were also other cabins/houses situated not too far and not too close from it. The cabin itself was very well equipped and furnished. The beds were very comfy. The heaters worked very well in all the rooms. There were soap + shampoo (and maybe conditioner) in the bathroom, and the shower was nice and warm. No body lotion provided though, so don't forget to bring one along if you have dry skin. The kitchen was well equipped, but there wasn't any cooking condiments (e.g. salt/pepper/sugar), so make sure you bring some with you if you want to cook. Andy was also a very responsive host. We faced a small issue when we arrived on the first night, but Andy got it fixed right away the next day. I was very happy. Overall, my sister and I had a very pleasant stay at Andy & Maggie's cabin!

  • Idyllic stay in a retreat-like location. All the facilities you would need whether staying in or going out. Great location to explore the local area but so comfortable you may not want to leave during your stay. Would happily return and recommend

    Neil2019-11-16T00:00:00Z
  • Great holiday home, nice and snug on damp autumn evenings. Would be even better in summer so could use the bbq area too. Peaceful location right in the woods. Easily drivable to Ambleside and its parking space is right at end of steps to lodge. We did not try the pool on the estate but very close by. Located in good place for a base for exploring many of the Lakes in this pretty part of the country, before heading back for a reflective cuppa in the cosy kitchen.

Over the Way is ideal for either a relaxing or romantic stay and a place from which to explore the beautiful surroundings with many walks right from the doorstep. The accommodation is within walking distance of two pubs. Troutbeck is one of the most photographed villages in The Lakes for its wonderful landscapes and character properties. Over the Way will make a great base for touring the whole of the National Park and a great stopover on the way up to Scotland perhaps.
There is a village shop about half a mile away with a small cafe. There are many walks of varying lengths straight out the front door.
  • Great location 1 min walk to Mortal Man pub. Place was spotlessly clean and had all the amenities we needed for a short walking break. Such a beautiful calm area. We would thoroughly recommend for an escape break

    Bebhinn2020-03-17T00:00:00Z
  • Myself and my wife stayed here for our paper anniversary recently, bringing along our 9 month old labrador. From the get go Diana was thorough and informative, about a week before arrival she sent us some detailed directions and some advice on the place itself. The setting is idyllic, surrounded by scenic routes and walks but still only around a 15 minute drive from local amenities and Windermere lake which was perfect for taking long walks and exploring. There's even a lovely pub about 2 minutes walk away from Over The Way so you don't have to venture out if you don't want to! The place is a great size for a couple and was absolutely spotless throughout. A perfect mix of modern and rusthic it's a perfect little apartment for a short stay at the lakes. Diana was responsive and thoughtful throughout, even remembering our anniversary by sending us some prosecco which we thought was a lovely gesture! Overall we had a fantastic stay and we would not hesitate to recommend her and to stay again in the future.

    Chad2020-03-13T00:00:00Z

  • Over the Way was perfect for our weekend break. Although we hoped to explore more of the area, Storm Dennis put a stop to that but the apartment was ideal for hunkering down and just relaxing. The place is far more cosy that the photos suggest (and bigger) and The Mortal Man pub, literally a minute away, was just what the doctor ordered in case cabin fever set in! Diana was the perfect host, providing a wonderful welcome birthday gift for us, and the communications (directions, access, parking, places to eat, etc.) were appreciated. Would most definitely recommend.

Alternatively on a sunny day sit outside on the balcony and watch the sailboats pass by and of course the ducks and swans are regular visitors. If you are very lucky Mr otter may come and visit! Look out for the amazing skies especially at sunrise and sunset, stargazing at the night skies and the romantic moonlight that sometimes shines into the boathouse. Ullswater is one of the most beautiful Lakes and you have lakeside location and so many stunning views as well as lots of wildlife.
  • We stopped at Jayne’s lovely boathouse on the way to Scotland and it was totally worth the trip. The boathouse is well equipped with everything you need to cook and eat, with the most delightful view of the water. Special touches made the trip super special, including wine and chocolates, plenty of brochures and in-depth instructions to find the location. We’d love to come back into the summer months and sunbathe on the lovely balcony.

    Stephanie2020-03-17T00:00:00Z
  • Wow what an amazing place to stay! One of the best airb&bs we’ve stayed at. The Boat House is beautiful, stunning views and so cosy. It has everything you could need - even a great dvd collection! Andy particularly enjoyed a freezing morning swim to start each day as I watched from the balcony armed with a cuppa and hot water bottle! A great spot to explore the area. We would absolutely recommend and hope to return one day! Jayne thank you so much for amazing hamper of treats, we were so spoilt!

The 5 Herdwick Huts are set on their own exclusive site on the stunning grounds of Rydal Hall in the heart of the Lake District National Park. With the best mountain walks straight from your hut door and Rydal lake only a 5 min walk away, it really is hard to beat this location. Perfect for a truly romantic getaway any time of year. All bedding linen and kitchen utensils provided, (including tea towel, sponge and washing up liquid) plus wood and kindling to get you started for the wood burner.
Tea room, ornate gardens and state of the art toilet/shower block on site at Rydal Hall for guest use.
Lakes, mountains and the Badger Bar for great pub grub and an opportunity to see the badgers.
  • We loved our little hut, and it worked perfectly for a short Winter/Spring break (the log burner kept the place nice and toasty, and the tea-light lanterns are a lovely little touch). Would definitely recommend!

    Charlie2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • We had a fabulous time in Blea hut, the weather was a wet and snowy, but what do you expect in the Lakes in February. However the hut was lovely and warm with the log burner and had all the amenities for cooking etc. They’re in a fantastic location for walks... 4 mile to Grasmere, 1-1/2 to Ambleside, Rydal Cave over the road. There’s the Badger pub on the main road but we walked into Ambleside with head torches on an evening. Showers/toilets are a walk but that didn’t bother us at all. We will definitely be back in winter. Little gem !!

    Jane2020-02-24T00:00:00Z

  • A perfect cottage for two in a perfect location. The house is small - a bedroom with en-suite upstairs and a living room with integral kitchen downstairs. It’s comfortable and well equipped for two. The dishwasher was welcome. Note there’s no washing machine but that was not a problem for us. Loads of walks from the door and local pubs nearby. A beautiful and quiet part of the lakes away from the honeypot sites. Loved it!

  • Cosy property in an ideal location for exploring Langdale and surrounding areas. We did not use the car all week as plenty of great walks locally. The local Co-Op is very well stocked and the local pubs The Britannia, Wainwright’s Inn and the Sticklebarn are all within walking distance. Perfection!

  • Bank View cottage is very stylish and cosy. We had a great time staying here. The location is great, very easy to get to the surrounding areas such as Ambleside, Coniston, Grasmere etc. We recommend the food at The Britannia Inn, which was delicious. On arrival there was a top 10 pub walks book which we used all week and completed 4/5 walks from it, this was a nice touch. We used the facilities to cook some evenings too, it was all very easy to use, pots, pans, plates, cutlery etc all provided. Overall, the cottage is very stylish and enjoyable to be in, in the beautiful Lake District. We would highly recommend and hope to visit again soon.

The Wash House is an historic cottage hidden just above the centre of Ambleside. Its private sunny terrace garden covered in clematis and wisteria has views of the fells and the rooftops. Restaurants, pubs, shops and walks are on your doorstep. This compact and cosy cottage on one floor is 100 metres from the centre of Ambleside. Once a wash house, then a sculptor's studio, the Wash House has now been cleverly converted to provide everything needed for a perfect holiday in quite a small space!
The Wash House was once used by the farmhouses of Old Ambleside before becoming the studio of Josefina de Vasconcellos. It is detached and private and has its own walled south facing terrace garden with views of Wansfell to the east and Loughrigg to the west. There is a table and chairs and two slate seats to enjoy the evening sun and the sound of Stock Ghyll beck. Bikes can be secured to the garden railings out of sight. A door from the garden leads into the comfortable sitting room with a wood burning stove. There is an LED TV with freesat, DVD player, wifi and mini hifi with usb and bluetooth. A small selection of books, DVDs, maps and games are provided for lazier days. The cosy bed box is a snug enclosed sleeping chamber. It's a bit of a squeeze but you can clamber in from both sides. There are wall lamps for reading, romantic fairy lights and a shelf at the head of the bed with space for books and drinks. Under the bed there are drawers for clothes and storage space for suitcases. Cotton bedding and ethically sourced feather duvet and pillows are provided - let us know if you have allergies and we'll change these! The newly fitted kitchen is fully equipped and has an oven, hob, toaster and kettle. The bathroom has a walk in thermostatic shower, large mirror, towel radiator. Towels are provided. The Wash House is accessed from Peggy Hill, a pedestrian lane. You can unload your car at the top (approximately 25 metres away) or at the bottom (50 metres) of Peggy Hill. Some free on street parking is available on the surrounding lanes. Otherwise the Pay and Display car park is 200 metres walk. Full details of parking will be sent to you. Access by public transport or bicycle is very easy. Ambleside can be reached by bus (often open top) from Windermere, or by ferry from Bowness. There is a shuttle service from the pier at Waterhead into the centre of Ambleside. Other things to note: The terrace is surrounded by a high wall and decorative iron railings to the south. Please be aware there is a steep drop beyond the railings. We'll send you our terms and conditions as part of the booking process and you have the option to cancel your booking if you're unhappy with them.
Ambleside is a well known and beautiful Lake District town with plenty of shops and facilities. There are many pubs, cafes and restaurants within walking distance. The Wash House is set amongst pretty stone and whitewashed cottages in the oldest part of the town above the river which you can hear clearly from the garden when it has been raining. Ambleside is in the heart of the Lake District so there is plenty to do and visit all around. You can walk to the fells from the door or do shorter trips – the beautiful Stockghyll Falls are only 15 to 20 minutes walk away. Play crazy golf, go to the cinema or relax at the Salutation Hotel Spa, which is almost next door to the Wash House.
  • Such a wonderful cottage. Brilliant location, within walking distance to a great selection of pubs, restaurants and hiking trails. Cosy cottage, perfect for two people, and a welcome home when returning from a long day of hiking.

  • A very lovely place, perfect for two. Would recommend and stay again.

    Ana2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • The space was compact and considerately planned. Hooks and drawers in all the right places, the space never felt cramped or crowded. We had a wonderful stay and Joanna had accounted for so much and the little extra touches too. Couldn't have asked for anything more. The location is spot on, and the space very bright and light.

    Roxanne2020-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • Totally exceeded expectations, beautifully decorated and kitted out, divine space inside and out with lovely sheltered terrace overlooking town perfect for eating and drinking outside. Great central location. Beautiful touches like freshly ground coffee, a lovely cake, fresh eggs, prossecco in the fridge, delicious shower gel.

    Susi2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • Joanna's cottage was a little fairytale nestled away in the cobbled streets of Ambleside. We absolutely loved staying here. The cottage was sparkling clean and so thoughtfully decorated and put together. It was a cozy retreat and a perfect base for exploring the beautiful Lake District. Joanna was very helpful and communicative throughout our stay. We definitely would like to stay again if we are lucky enough!

    Jackie2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • The Old Wash House was the perfect place to stay for a few days away in the Lake District. Right in the centre of beautiful Ambleside, it is the ideal base for walks around the area. It's cosy but modern and has everything you need, made special with some extra wee touches on arrival. If back in the Lake District we would love to stay here again. Highly recommended!

    Robin2020-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed our stay at The Old Wash House and will definitely be staying here again! This was perfect for having a quiet midweek getaway, it's a cosy little hideaway offering peace and seclusion even though it's right within the centre of Ambleside. The location is fantastic and the property itself is fell fitted and stylish, plenty of local amenities (as you'd expect) and our host was very helpful and prompt with communications. 10/10 and would definitely recommend.

    Joe2020-02-07T00:00:00Z
  • Looks are deceiving, the wash house is so much roomier than one would expect from the photos! Well equipped and a place for everything. Great access to walks on the doorstep and Ambleside is such a great little town to be based in. Thanks for a great stay, we would love to stay again on our return to the lakes!

  • Beautiful house! Better than I expected

  • 4 friends enjoyed their stay at this beautiful apartment! Quaint Ambleside was right outside and we really loved it here. Gorgeous modern place with very comfortable amenities/furniture.

    Penny2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • This place was perfect! Right in the centre of Ambleside so everything was a short walk away. The flat was spotless and decorated very tastefully! Craig was easy to contact when needed so we had no issues with that aspect of our stay. The flat had everything we needed and was fitted with some hi-tech appliances that made it feel more luxurious. The only thing I would mention (but this is nothing to do with the flat itself) is that if, like me, you’re a light sleeper be aware that from around 6am the streets start getting noisier with business deliveries and street cleaners so I would recommend ear plugs if you think you would struggle to sleep. Parking behind the building was ideal and our car was kept safe and off the street. We did bring a second car but we had no issues parking it in the public car park just minutes (walk) from the flat. The rate for this was £15 for 3 days which isn’t unreasonable by any means. Overall, I would recommend this place to everyone in a heartbeat. We felt well looked after and couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay to make our little holiday just that bit more special. Thank you!

    Louise2020-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect. So glad that we stayed here. We didn’t want to leave. Absolutely everything that you needed and in the perfect location. The hosts went above and beyond! Couldn’t have been any better. Would love to come back!

  • A beautiful flat, excellently located.

    Hollieann2020-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • Another thoroughly enjoyable stay at Midland Bank Chambers, the flat is spotlessly clean and modern, the check in process has title free, can’t recommend it enough.

    Neil2020-02-14T00:00:00Z
  • A truly incredible place to stay! Perfectly located in the middle of Ambleside it is both a brilliant base for walks and experiencing all the Lake District has to offer. The apartment was stunning and so well decorated. It was homely yet very up to date and well designed. There was no stone unturned when it came to making sure we had everything we needed.

    Finn2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • The flat was stunning everything was the best quality possible even the kitchen utilities. Communication was great and it was super clean. I had a bath tub in my room which made it extra special.

  • A lovely tranquil cottage with no surrounding buildings, so very quiet and peaceful. Everything was clean. Check in was easy and everything went smoothly

    Anthony2019-10-15T00:00:00Z
  • Cosy little barn in the middle of nowhere down a gravel track across several fields. Kitchen is a good size and well equipped for cooking - although we missed having a wooden spoon! Shower lovely and hot and the barn was super warm and welcoming when we arrived. Check in is by lock box, no problem at all. Internet and phone signal is patchy but that’s what we went for - a great little hideaway with views of Ullswater. Thanks Susan!

    Lindsay2019-10-07T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful location with amazing views; comfortable, quiet, a real hidden gem! Would recommend if you want to forget the world a while 😊

    Sam2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • we had such a lovely time, the space is amazing and the pictures don’t do it justice! the track up to the cottage goes through a few fields full of sheep, but they’ll move out of your way with no problem. the views from the property are amazing, and we’ll definitely miss sitting out on the back porch in the morning with a cup of tea! the location is second to none, and the absence of wifi was a godsend - bring books and board games and you’ll enjoy something not so routed in technology. we had food at a local pub up the road in Dacre called The Horse & Farrier - would recommend for a bit of lunch! we also visited a local waterfall at Aira Force which is about 15 minutes drive down the road. my partner and i are already planning to return in future for a break from the city, and would recommend for anyone looking to do the same. we have also recommended the place to friends and family!

    Darren2019-08-31T00:00:00Z
  • The Hidden Place lives up to its name, secluded, hidden and gloriously quiet. However, one is still fast by car to all sorts of beautiful places, restaurants and shopping. The view from the terrace over the Ullswater lake and the picturesque landscape around it is breathtaking. The house is cozy and nicely decorated and everything was very clean. The best we liked the already mentioned view, the sheep pasture directly adjacent to the terrace, the excursion to the nearby Dalemain House with wonderful gardens and the great location! We hope to be back someday.

    Juliane & Felix2019-08-28T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our mini moon holiday at this lovely cottage. It’s much bigger than looks, and super comfy. The cottage was spotlessly clean & welcome tray of bread, shortbread, teas & coffees, milk & bottle of wine were very much appreciated! We enjoyed uninterrupted views over Ullswater, and not a road or person in sight. Not sure who felt there was not enough natural light in a previous review! Only note is that the flies can be troublesome, so we did not leave doors & windows open. Wouldn’t hesitate to return, thanks.

    Philippa2019-07-25T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful cottage in a stunning location. Super clean with great facilities. If you do stay here we'd definitely recommend checking out the Another Place restaurant which is 18 minutes walk away and does some great food on the side of the lake.

    Herbie2019-07-18T00:00:00Z
  • The Hidden Place is really somewhere special. The location is beautiful, surrounded by views and only the cows and sheep as neighbours! Everything was clean and tidy and check in was very simple. It’s definitely bigger and more spacious than it seems in the Photos’s. The bed was very comfy and we had everything we needed. It was fantastic to arrive to bread, butter, wine and the essentials. Nice touch!! Highly recommend if you want a quiet “getting away from it all” holiday in the Lakes.

High Beckside is a delightful 17th-century traditional Lakeland farmhouse, in the conservation village of Hartsop. It has beautiful southerly views of Hartsop Dodd and Dovedale, and is ideally situated for walking in the fells. The cottage is full of character with exposed oak beams and an open fire. Set in 1/2 acre of garden, with lots of wildlife. Up to 2 well-behaved dogs are welcomed for a small extra fee of 15 pounds per dog. FRIDAY (CHECK- IN) TO FRIDAY (CHECK - OUT) BOOKINGS ONLY.
Out of consideration for the local red squirrel population, we regret that cats are not accepted at High Beckside.
Recently awarded World Heritage Status, the Lake District National Park is one of the highlights of any trip to the UK. Hartsop, a Conservation Village, has retained many original features - stone and slate cottages, some with spinning galleries, a working National Trust hill farm and an ancient pack-horse bridge. A variety of high-level walks directly from the door, or low-level walks such as round Brotherswater lake (with refreshments at the Inn), or along the track to Patterdale village and Ullswater lake.
  • A very easy and comfortable house to live in ! We had a slight panic initially as couldn’t find fourth (double) bedroom which is up outside stone staircase in what was the old wool loft. Nice big boiler room with stone floor for the dogs.

  • A beautiful setting, a comfy rose covered cottage, well away form the tourists. The sun shone and it was perfect.

  • Hazel is brilliant and the property was ideal for us. Thank you.

    Richard2018-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • A wonderfully rustic home reflecting the rugged landscape around it, Hazel's place nestles in a striking valley with a roaring beck just beyond the back garden yet also has all the comforts and conveniences. We especially enjoyed the open fire and the luxury shower after a wet day's walking. Hazel (and her father) were quick to respond when we needed help with a power cut and a tripped switch in the fusebox. All was as we'd hoped for and more. Despite a week of rain and storms we had a lovely time and would happily return.

    Vanessa2018-09-22T00:00:00Z

Nord Vue Barn is conveniently situated in the Lakeland village of Penruddock, which benefits from very easy access to the M6 and only 15 minutes drive to both Keswick and Ullswater. The property was an 18th Century barn which the owners converted to an extremely spacious holiday cottage, with the best of traditional and modern features. It is ideally situated for people wanting to go fell walking, running, mountain biking, stand up paddle boarding and other mountain and lake activities.
Since 2012 Nord Vue Barn has consistently achieved the VisitEngland 4 Star Gold Award for exceptional quality of accommodation and customer service.
Penruddock is a very friendly village with a local pub, school and village hall.
  • Super accommodation in great location and sparklingly clean and exactly as described. Jenny was an excellent host with good communication. Location is excellent in quiet village close to Penrith and Keswick and with nice pub in village within walking distance. Highly recommend Airbnb.

  • A truly gorgeous renovated barn perfect for two, with a fireplace and lovely mezzanine floor. The host left us beers and chocolate which was incredibly lovely, and it was close to everything we could have wanted - Keswick, Ullswater, Skiddaw, etc! It felt very homey and comfortable. I'm already planning our return. Would highly recommend this place!

  • A stunning cottage with a log stove, fully equipped kitchen, lovely bath and brilliant living space. We had a great NYE and drove a mere 20min the next day to Glenridding near Ullswater and hiked up to Helvellyn. Exquisite start to the decade!

    Ina2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
