The Gambia Vacation Rentals

Just booked in Gunjur

Paradise... this part of the world is a hidden gem that few know about. Protecting the last standing wild Atlantic forrest of the Gambia, 100 meters from the beach, w/ local, fresh restaurant & 10 small round houses making an intimate community
Historically this region of the Gambia (along the boarder with Senegal to the South) belonged to a family of the Madinka tribe named Bayo. One member, S. Bayo, had worked for nearly his entire life to miraculously protect the property and environment from poachers, villagers cutting trees, and foreign investors wanting to sand mine the African coast. In 2010, I met Sabaty during a trip to West Africa while helping on a non profit project. At that time, Mr Bayo was exhausted and in need of help to continue to protect this still natural part of the coast. Bringing some investment and some connection to the global community, we worked together to develop a small lodge and to join with others interested in environmental preservation. This hidden treasure is located on the southern coast of the Gambia near the Senegalese boarder between Gunjur & Kartong. The place, location and environment is truly spectacular and is a short distance from the "Sacred Rocks" which still host many traditional rituals. You'll be staying beside the village of Madina Salaam which is only a short distance by foot through paths leading through forests full of monkeys and birds. Your beautiful room is steps away from pristine beaches and quaint, traditional, African village life. This magical getaway offers international comfort (clean and comfy beds), tasteful, African design, quiet (only the sound of the ocean). The room is run on solar power and Eco- all the way! Bike, hike, swim, dance, drum, fish, run, do art, make friends! I offer a simple menu that includes a variety of international and African options (and many vegetarian choices). Neighbors grow much of our the food I use to cook so it's 100% organic, local and fresh. If you like fishing you can have a go at it - (night fishing is best) and perhaps I'll cook what you catch for dinner (Ps. my neighbor can lend you his fishing rod if you need one). I can help you discover the sweetest spots in the country to explore. Some of my first visitors have told me that my place was their favorite spot in all of the country. Please join me for an unforgetable stay in West Africa. Public transport is available from the highway nearby or taxi's can be called anytime. Let me know in advance and I'll pick you up from the airport (1500 D). Your room includes a mosquito nets, solar powered lighting, a good mattress and quality pillows! Light, sunny spaces with wooden furniture and the sound of the ocean in the background. A lite breeze keeps the place generally bug free. There are many exciting cultural activities I can connect you to and exciting places to visit from bustling markets to local soccer games, cultural festivals and great music and dance workshops. I love good dance and music and I am well connected in this area should you be interested in exploring this aspect of Africa further. There is also great bird watching close by and endless nature walks. I also have bikes I can lend you to explore neighboring villages. I have strong connections to non-profits and community leaders that are deeply involved in making a difference in the lives of people in this part of the world. In particular, I support and work with traditional healers, support clean water projects, and community education. I am committed to positive community development and invite anyone who wants to offer education, wisdom, mentorship in any area to visit and join the community. COME visit! If you need a pick up from the airport please inform us and we will organize a driver to come get you. This costs an additional 1,500 dalasis or roughly $40 dollars. I am not always on the property as I travel regularly but I have an awesome local staff that helps manage the place when I am away from home. Either way you will be happy and relaxed. You can see other guest reviews by searching for Nemasu Ecolodge on the internet. We are located on the best beach in the country! It is a quiet retreat in a traditional and real African village. This is a place for tourists that want to see the hidden side of this country. Taxi is the best way to arrive. Within the community walking or renting a bike to getting around easily is fun. Otherwise, public buses from nearby Gunjur are available though departure times are not predictable. Bring a flashlight Swimsuit Mosquito Repellent (even though we have few of them) Sunscreen Books to leave behind for our community library

  • We had the most wonderful stay at Nemasu. Hillary and Greg are wonderful hosts and made us feel very welcome. Hillary was very helpful in meeting our vegetarian needs and the whole team at Nemasu looked after us so well, could not recommend this beautiful place highly enough. Thank you all so much. We hope to be back. Emily and Natasha

  • We stayed in Nemasu for our Honeymoon and i don't think it could have been better! All the staff were incredible, and made us feel so special at at home. They decorated the room and made us a cake on our arrival. They also organised a Cora player who serenaded us during our dinner with unique songs adapted for us! There were also mesmerising Gambian dance and drumming evenings led by local people, one around a campfire! Seedy the manager is a wonderful man, intuitive, friendly and goes above and beyond to make sure you are happy- he also personally made sure our airport transfers went smoothly. The place itself, set both in green forest and by an unspoilt beach. Rooms were spotless and spacious, the bed was huge and comfy. The food was delicious and home cooked with fresh ingredients every day. We even got to go in the kitchen and learn how to make one of the African dishes with the chef! The surrounding area is really interesting with a bustling local fishing village within walking distance, and lots of places of interest a short journey away. We found all the local Gambian people extremely friendly and welcoming often greeting us by saying 'please feel as though you are at home'. Our trip couldn't have been more perfect, i've got nothing negative to say except get a surfboard! ;) thanks so much!

  • We had a wonderful time, the staff where friendly and helpful. The accommodation was clean and well kept. The location on the beach and area surrounding were a mini paradise. Only one day when the sun didn't shine the solar water in the shower was 'warm' - not hot.

  • We had a great time at Nemasu. It is a very nice lodge with separate houses some with splendid seaview for the sunset. The real secret of the place is the people. The staff is very helpfull and friendly. As are the owners and hosts Hillary and Greg. If you're looking for a secluded place far from the touristtraps this is the place to be. We will be back.

  • Nemasu Eco Lodge gives you a good taste of the beauty of Gamba: the lovely beach, the people, the nature, far from the tourist crowds. The beach is shared only with an incidental cow passing by or people from the surrounding villages and sometimes a few fellow lodge guest. Our kids (aged 8 and 11) spent the week spotting monkeys in de garden and playing on the beach and didn’t need much more. The staff was always welcoming and helpful. All in all a lovely and very relaxing week in the sun, worth repeating!

  • We have just come back after an incredible time at Nemasu. This place is heaven, the people are delightful and it was our best holiday yet. We had Christmas and new year here with great music and food. The beach is beautiful and the roundhouse we stayed in was so comfortable. I can't recommend this place enough and we know we will come back. Hillary, Greg and Sydi and all the staff thankyou so much xxx Lucy and Matt

  • Great stay at nemasu upgraded our room on arrival.superb sea view, lovely long walks along beautiful coastline.great chilled stay

  • What can i say about Nemasu besides it was probably one of the closest places to paradise where i was in my life. Deeply enjoyed the place, beach area, the quiet and peaceful surroundings and above all the amazing people that works there and the special and dedicated work they are doing with the local communities in order to empower them and create a greater future. Our thanks to all who warmly received us and made our trip one of the most memorable and special. Seedy is a great manager developing a great work. Hope to be back very soon to this truly "hidden African beach paradise". The only downsize would be he room where we stayed which was very hot and made hard to sleep with the temperature but all the rest made this little point seem very insignificant! Highly recommended!

Away from the tourist strip and set in own tropical garden, this wooden eco-house provides a peaceful retreat close to amenities of a small eco-lodge (Footsteps). Half hour stroll to deserted beaches. 1 mile from local village and colourful market.
Although only an hour from Banjul airport, this very unusual wood and thatch house is refreshingly far from the hassle of the Gambian tourist strip. You fall asleep to the distant roar of the ocean and wake to the strange dawn chorus of tropical birds. All services are ecological. We have our own bore hole for water, solar power for electricity and the toilets are non-flush self-composting. The house is tall and airy with mesh windows and a shady verandah runs the length of the house. In addition, there is a separate shaded seating area ('bantaba') with sunloungers and hammocks. The house is fully self catering with its own kitchen area and 3-ring gas hob but all meals and refreshments are available at the excellent eco-lodge restaurant a two minute walk away. Transport is by bicycles (we provide two free of charge), bush taxi or car and driver which are easily arranged on an ad hoc daily basis. The house is private, though for practical purposes (daily cleaning and 24 hour security) is under the umbrella of Footsteps Eco-lodge with its genuinely friendly and helpful staff. The house has a large open plan living area with kitchen at one end and comfortable seating at the other. Leading off, there are two double bedrooms with king size beds and a bathroom with gravity shower (hot and cold), wash basin and self-composting toilet. Power supply is solar and runs off batteries. This is sufficient for lighting, fans, and for charging mobile phones, laptops etc., but it will not support power-hungry appliances such as hair-dryers, electric shavers etc.
We love: the feeling of being in the middle of the African countryside yet with all amenities close at hand; the proximity of deserted ocean beaches (walking and swimming); strolling to the beach to watch the amazing sunsets; the friendliness of staff and locals contrasted with the endless harassment of the tourist areas; the stimulation of meeting other guests if you want it, the privacy of your own place if you don't; the vibrancy and colour of African life, but only as much as you want; sitting on the verandah in the evening with a cold drink; learning about African life - visiting schools and hospitals (we support, and try and raise money for a local nursery school in Sambuyang village); generally chilling out. If you feel more active and adventurous: you can hire fishing equipment from the lodge and fish from the beach; you can take boat trips into Senegal; you can visit the 'reptile farm' and handle pythons; have drumming lessons; learn to tie-dye batiks; take guided nature walks and make cultural visits (e.g. go to a naming ceremony); visit craft centres; learn about Gambian cooking; the possibilities are endless.
  • Spacious, well equipped house immersed in lovely garden and absolute peace and quiet. Everyone working at Footsteps is a star and eager to help. Being able to use the facilities there was a great plus - the hammocks, the plunge pool, the restaurant (not cheap but good food)... We had a couple of problems while there which Ken and his assistant helped to solve promptly. We will certainly be back. Thank you

We're renting out our second home in the Gambia, a tiny house in a peaceful village. We hope you will feel as if it is your home too! Big garden with goats and dogs. A friend who looks after the house will provide security and help.
Surrounded by beautiful nature, close to the ocean, amazing bird life and located in a small village where there are no tourists - this is the best place to relax. Everything runs on solar and is "off-grid" and we try to live as eco-friendly as possible.
We're a Gambian-Swedish family so we know this country well and we all fell in love with this village named Sambuyang the first time we went there. It has a rural pace but at the same time it is connected to the urban areas. The walk to the beach is the most beautiful we've ever seen in the Gambia. It's a relatively new village so there is an open spirit as many people are new settlers from nearby countries or the countryside.
  • The property review was honest and helpful. Katja couldn't have done more to help - all queries were answered quickly and with as much detail/information as possible. We were made very welcome by Bakari and Cowsu, and felt at home as soon as we entered the compound gates. Bakari came along with us to the reptile park at Gunjur and to Kingfisher Lodge at Marakissa - both places were new to him, but he managed to hold a snake and even went looking for crocodiles with Ivan and Robert! All our food was purchased and cooked fresh each day by Cowsu and Bakari - so tasty, and all from a one burner stove! Thank you to you all for being part of another fantastic holiday in The Gambia. Our first time with Airbnb but I'm sure it wont be our last.

  • We have spent 3 weeks in the Gambia and this place was truly our retreat, our hideaway from busy Gambia, and our source of energy before and after travelling within the country. We booked this home for all three weeks so we could come back whenever we felt like it, and we ended up spending most of our time there! Katja helped us to prepare for our holidays by aswering all of our questions about the country. Kawsu and Bakary made us feel very comfortable in and around the house. The village is lovely! We were welcomed with open arms. The beachside in Sambuyang is amazing, and you will not find one single tourist there!

  • True Gambian life experience. We were among Gambians and we saw a whole different life than we are used to. It made us humble... Kawsu and Bakary took excellent care of us. If you want, they cook every meal. 3 times a day a fresh cooked meal with lokal food, very tasty! The place is beautifull and quiet, only animal noises heared. Every roadtrip is possible, even going to Senegal. Communication with Katja is friendly, quick and excellent. We really liked our stay, want to come back some time! :-)

  • Jeg havde 2 fantastiske uger her!

Little Lodge is a small family lodge in the bush, about 300 meters to the beautiful beach on the Atlantic Ocean, near Kartong (about 6 Km). Kartong is in the south of Gambia on the border Casamas / Senegal. The Kartong Festival each year is three days
Our guest houses are rondavels "Local Style" built of fired mud bricks, glazed metal windows and doors and with roofs of palm leaves. Each guest house has a 'European' toilet and a shower. Comfortable beds, obligatory with mosquito nets invite you to a relaxing, quiet night. The few power is obtained from solar cells. Enough to charge a mobile phone or notebook.
Nearby our neighborhood are more lodges. About. 1 KM away Medina Salam. a small town with a small market and several small supermarkets, a school and two mosques.
  • I stayed with Sunkar and Lothar for 3 weeks and was gutted to leave. I could not ask for better hosts, they went beyond in helping me with everything I needed, from airport transfers to bike rental. They are extremely hospitable and friendly, I enjoyed spending many an hour with them them at the lodge chatting by the fire and enjoying the peaceful surroundings. Sunkar offered evening meals for me at a small cost and I can assure any future guests that her cooking is the best in the Gambia. She was happy to cook whatever I wished for and would go out her way to get fresh ingredients and fish from gunjur. The lodge is simple but very comfortable, the surroundings are beautiful (literally in the middle of the bush, and the greenest part of the Gambian cost) and it's only a short walk to the beach. I look forward to my next trip to the lodge in the near future!

Die Lage ist sehr abgeschieden, wodurch man seine Ruhe hat und Entspannung in der Natur genießen kann. Es ist ein idyllisches Örtchen mit fast unberührtem Strand ganz in Fußmarschnähe. Since 1992 Nemasu has hosted visitors from all over the world, drawn to this unique area by the friendliness of the Gambian people and the beauty of its coast. Our eco-lodge is elegant, and comfortable; right on the beach, surrounded by forest, with natural, comfortable houses and lodging. Fresh, healthy local food, great cocktails, and friendly staff. We're central and provide all services so you don't have to worry about a thing!
Nemasu eco-lodge is located on the best beach in Gambia- peaceful, beautiful & inspiring. We have a range of accommodation options- our Airbnb price is for one of our Roundhouses- African style, beautiful with king size bed, en-suite, mahogany furniture, and views of the ocean. We have a great restaurant, bar & activities. Only 45 minutes from the airport! We have a range of activities including drum lessons, bird watching, body boarding on one of our free boards, bike riding, swimming, or wandering around the village of Medina Salam- a peaceful, truly African rural village. Our restaurant is full of locally sourced organic food; we even have a hand made mud oven that we bake food with. We have a bar- so be free to sit in a hammock, watch the sunset with your favorite cocktail! We are on several hectares of healthy forest. We have monkeys visit, the occasional antelope, and have planted many trees including mango, coconut, and cashew, as well as many flowers and vegetables.
Some 30km south of Serekunda, and only a 20 min. walk from Nemasu, Gunjur is a small coastal town but one of the largest fishing centres in The Gambia. It's fascinating to walk amid the villagers- cleaning & smoking fish; repairing nets; pulling their handmade mahogany boats into & out of the sea. It's a photographers dream! Kartong is a calm little village, 10km south of Gunjur, and about an hours' walk from Nemasu in the other direction. It's one of Gambias best kept secrets, a picture postcard village where gigantic palm trees sway over women with children on their back and men on wobbly bicycles.
  • Nemasu is very friendly. No Gambia cheap tourist entertainment, but a lovely simple nature spot. We loved staff and team. Nemasu is great for single people who like rest and harmony. We as couple were happy to experience Nemasu!

  • A little Gambian heaven. The staff is very friendly and helpfull. The location is amazing, next to an village, in front of the sea, beautiful nature (beautiful trees, birds, butterflies, cows on the beach, nice dogs, some apes); a real Gambian experience. The food... is very, very nice! (the cakes, the chips, soup, salads) and the lodge and restaurant are looking great. By far the best food I had in Gambia so far :) You are gonna sleep with some cricketnoises and you are gonna wake up with the sound of the ocean.

    Rick2015-01-28T00:00:00Z
  • we arrived at the airport and a car was waiting for us. We spent 10 days at Nemasu Ecovillage with a boy of 4 and we really recommend it if you want a safe, eco and beautiful escape. From our room we can listen the sound of the sea! Everyone is there to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Only things, when we where staying there was not hot water but they were working on it with some solar reservoirs.
