Great location! This completely renovated unit has a separate entrance (locking door and deadbolt/self-contained unit) in the basement of my house but doesn’t feel like a basement at all. The private escape is a modern open concept space with a queen size bed, sitting area, large windows, private 4 piece bathroom, TV, Netflix, Wifi, Microwave and fridge.
**Please read before booking** Description of space - This is a basement self contained unit. Unit has one large room (recently renovated) with a queen size bed, TV, couch, microwave, mini fridge, coffee maker and a clothing rack. Also has a large 4 piece bathroom. *No kitchen* Unit has high ceilings, large windows and lots of lights. My two dogs (Golden Retriever and Pug) live on the main floor, however, they do not have access to this suite. They are very nice/gentle pets and I will do my best to keep them quiet. I would be happy to host you and will do everything I can to help you have an amazing stay at the Private Escape!
Very safe neighborhood with quiet neighbors on a quiet street. Pita Pit and Double double pizza are a block away from the house. And just a few blocks away on Red River Rd, there is Pizza Hut, Kfc, pizza pizza, little Caesars pizza, McDonald's, Wendy's and Arby's. The house is 1.5 blocks from Red River Rd. There are some nice restaurants down town on Red River Rd also, The Foundry, The Sovereign Room and Tomlin. Walmart, Dollarama, Safeways and No Frills are just a few minutes up Red River Rd across the highway where Red River Rd turns into Dawson Rd. The house is less than a 5 minute drive from the Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Center (hospital) and Lakehead University. Thunder Bay Airport is 15-20 min drive.

This cozy cabin provides a perfect getaway and is a gem in all seasons, especially during the fall colors or a blowing winter storm. Timber frame cabin built on a hilltop, on 20 acres of old growth maples. Walls of glass, a screened in porch and a wrap around deck bring the outdoors inside. The ridge top location has spectacular views through the trees - with lake views after the leaves drop. The property also boasts a fantastic wood fired cedar sauna - perfect for rejuvenating.
The timber frame cabin is located in Hovland MN, which is 30 minutes north of Grand Marais, near the Canadian border and lake Superior. The cabin sleeps up to 3 (1 double bed & 1 sleeping cot). Camping is an option with the wide outdoor space and screened in porch, email for details. Folks will need to bring: - Sleeping bags/blankets/pillows for beds - Drinking water. There is rain barrel water for washing, but not for drinking. In winter, snow can be melted on the wood stove or gas burner for washing. - Cooler for perishables - Headlamps/flashlight to get to the outhouse and sauna Cabin is equipped with: - wood sauna - 100 yards from cabin - outhouse - wood stove for heating - wood shed with axe, hatchet & buck saw (be prepared to split your kindling) - gas lighting - 2-burner gas cook top - wall mounted gas space heater with thermostat - outdoor cook grill (bring your own charcoal or use fire wood) - dishes, cutlery, pots, pans, cutting board, kettle, dish washing basin Cleaning Fee: We do not charge a cleaning fee, so long as the cabin is left in the same condition (cleaned) as it was upon arrival. If the cabin is left uncleaned, a $50 penalty will be charged from the damage deposit. Remember to pack out your garbage. Please be kind and leave some dry kindling inside for the next guests.
  • This was an amazing stay. My wife and I spent the weekend enjoying the beauty of this space. With the large windows it felt like outdoors was just another room. The sauna was fantastic and there was plenty of quality wood for heat. It was definitely an adventure getting there. Be prepared for a long and somewhat challenging walk with a sled full of gear if you come in the winter. We will definitely stay here again!

    Josh2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Incredibly secluded cabin in the woods, definitely worth the extreme hike up the hill dragging our supplies and food through the snow. We are already booking our next stay here for this summer and can’t wait to come back!

    Rebecca2020-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • I had an absolutely wonderful three nights up at the mokki. My only regret is not adding a few more nights. I actually met Stevie and Lonnie on my hike up to the hut. They were both so lovely, and had even started a fire in the stove to greet me. I loved the slow, simple pace of each day. With no connections to the outside world, I reconnected with all the pastimes I'd lost touch with. I spent my days cooking, shoveling snow, stocking wood, reading, writing, drawing, and just being in the moment. There is profound beauty and peace in this place! I would recommend 100x over.

    Maxwell2019-12-08T00:00:00Z
  • This is our second time visiting Lonnie’s place during the winter. It’s always a great experience that’s worth the crazy uphill hike & blizzard/snowstorms. We love the silence, solitude, and sauna experiences!

Room #1 in our Hostel features a queen sized bed and a large window that overlooks Lake Superior. This room is located near the entrance of the hostel. A hostel is a budget orientated, sociable accommodation that is shared among individual travelers and groups for short term stays. Mingling & sharing is part of the deal!
This is a private room in the lower level of the hostel. It has a queen sized bed and a view of Lake Superior! It does not have in- floor heat as the rest of the hostel does, but it does stay plenty warm during the cooler seasons.
We are located on a quiet & peaceful property that overlooks Lake Superior. We are a short drive from Grand Marais, and close to most outdoor recreational trails & parks.
  • I come here on my work trips and I love staying here and will continue to come back.

    Jessica2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • Just had another great stay at the Hungry Hippie! It truly is a great place to explore, rest your head, and meet other guests. Kate and Jeremy are present, available, and friendly. The hostel itself is clean, comfortable, and in general a happy place to be! Thanks!

This is a quaint sleeping studio cabin located at Rustic Superior private campground, one mile off of Hwy 61 in Hovland, Minnesota. Includes futon, chairs, fire pit & panoramic view of the property and Lake Superior. Perfect for the individual or couple looking to get away from everything. This simple 12 x 12 foot north woods structure is well-maintained & clean. Penny's Peak is a visually secluded rustic campsite. Guests have full access to our groomed hiking trails and stunning wilderness.
The sleeping studio is located within 20 miles of the Canadian border or Grand Marais (recognized as the Coolest Small Town in America). Resources in the area are abundant and include High Falls, Grand Portage, Arrowhead Trail, Gunflint Trail, Boundary Waters Canoe Area, Magney State Park, State boat launch, Superior National Forest, and many other endless rivers, trails and experiences to explore. The term ‘rustic’ is very much a cliché these days and from our perspective – over used. This is not rustic in a decorative sense, with pictures of moose on the blanket, bad coffee and scratchy towels. When we say rustic, we mean an outhouse, no running water other than our 5-gallon shower tent, and a battery-operated lantern. You will be sheltered, yet still able to smell the birch and pine trees, lake breezes and great outdoors! You will be able to completely disconnect! Write, read, paint, get to know yourself better, and get to know someone else better, or simply commune with nature. No cell or wireless coverage here.
Immediate neighbors include countless birds, many deer, beaver, bear and wolves. Just over 20 miles north of Grand Marais, and just under 20 miles south of Grand Portage. We are about a five minute drive to Hovland, MN where there is a store for food and supplies.
  • If you're considering staying here, DO IT. It is truly incredible - the pictures don't do it justice. And if you're worried about getting cold - don't. The heater does an incredible job warming the space, we stayed in late October and were never chilly inside. A spectacular spot in a beautiful part of Minnesota. And definitely use the recommendations provided by the host! We went up with no plans and checked out what they suggested - they know what they're talking about. We'll be coming back for sure!

    Julianne2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • This is a truly special place. I was totally awe inspired from the moment I arrived until I departed. I will definitely make this retreat again many times; it is substantively meaningful and worthwhile. For me, walking up to the cabin and stepping inside was existentially profound, a God-moment, if you will. Communication was prompt, helpful, hospitable, and non-intrusive. The host provided what I wanted/needed via email. This allowed me to feel supported without compromising the serenity of this experience. Regarding email access for communication, I had mobile service in spots on the peak and strong LTE signal was on the ready after a 5 minute drive down the ridge to Hwy 61; I have T-Mobile service. Go for the views, to commune with nature, to renew your spirit, and to enjoy ruggedly beautiful, pragmatic, minimalist accommodations. If a solar shower (small tent shower that is not cold or hot) and composting toilet (very well constructed and sanitary with zero smell) that are about a 50' walk from the amazing, warm cabin perched overlooking Lake Superior are not for you, then reconsider; keep in mind that there is a YMCA where you could get a hot shower, swim, sauna, or a workout in after a short drive south to Grand Marais. Be sure to bring drinking water, wet wipes, pillows/blanket or sleeping bag, a cooler and your food. Grand Marais is accessible, and you're gonna want to stick around once you get there, so better to plan ahead and prepare properly.

  • Remote, but incredibly beautiful and well worth the trip. Isolated but not at all unfriendly, did I mention it was beautiful?

    John2019-10-21T00:00:00Z
  • One of the most beautiful places my husband and I have been!! Top notch view of Superior with a beautiful sunrise and sunset. When they say less is more, that is this place. Not a lot of extra things like WiFi and electricity, but that’s what makes this place amazing!! 10/10 would recommend!!

    Kayla2019-10-18T00:00:00Z
  • This is probably the most beautiful Airbnb you’ll ever stay in. Hands down. We made it just in time for the peak of the fall colors atop Penny’s Peak, which was the cherry on top of our stay in the cozy little cottage overlooking Lake Superior. Expect excellent views, some nice walking trails through the aspen groves, and top-notch wildlife sightings if you’re lucky!

    Michael2019-10-10T00:00:00Z
  • Penny’s Peek was everything that I expected and much more. We did arrive after dark due to a late start from working the night before. However, the owner directed us to the hill. My partner and I were in total shock of the commanding view of Lake Superior. The fall colors were breathtaking and the sunrise was equally rewarding. We are both passionate about the outdoors and have been backpacking on the Superior Hiking trail, so we’re both prepared for the evening. We reheated MAC and Cheese, along with salmon and asparagus. We enjoyed beers from Bent Paddle Brewery and hashed out the day. We both successfully summited Eagle MT. The cot and futon were comfortable for the both of us. And the gas stove kept the cabin very warm, since I am a cold sleeper. My partner and I, both agreed that Penny Peek is a special place and have plans to return!!! Thanks Penny!!!

Wonderful location for enjoying all that Grand Marais has to offer, while being slightly removed to enjoy the tranquil shoreline. Relax and listen to the waves crash from this newly buillt, charming, clean, and comfortable loft. Perched along the scenic lakeside, Croftville Road, you can enjoy the quiet Lake Superior life while being a short bike ride (use our bikes) to "the coolest small town in America", Grand Marais.
The loft has a well-equipped, full size kitchen, spacious bedroom, and charming living and dining areas overlooking the lake. It's a great spot to venture out, whether it be hiking up one of the nearby waterfalls, going for a paddle, wetting a fishing line, discovering a secluded swimming hole, or enjoying some of the wonderful eateries in town. Queen size bed in bedroom. There is a pull out sofa in the living room that will sleep one adult or two children, and a comfy trifold 6" memory foam queen mattress to sleep two more adults.
The loft is located on a quiet lake Superior frontage road with more foot traffic than vehicle traffic. Some year round residents as well as many small summer lake cottages.
  • We had a wonderful time at Colette and Justin’s place. It makes for a spectacular home base to explore the area and also a picturesque spot to stay in and spend the day reading and relaxing.

Perched up on timbers, this cozy little A-frame offers a perfect blend of urban loft and rustic cabin living. Offering a bird’s eye view of the harbor from the deck and the loft bedroom, the Birdhouse is a charming home base for your Grand Marais adventure. The cabin is nestled in an alley just a few steps from downtown restaurants, shops, harbor, breweries, coffee shop, North House Folk School, Art Colony and much more.
The centerpiece of the Birdhouse is the contemporary burgundy tub, perfect for sipping your morning coffee. Note that there is no shower. The wall of south facing windows lets the natural light pour in, perfect on a cold winter day! In the summer, the south facing deck is there for you to enjoy your happy hour drinks before you hit the night scene. The interior finish features a Nepali theme with porter baskets, yak wool blanket and large singing bowl. The warmth of an all wood finish is created by the birch floors, wood paneled walls and large loft timbers. The abstract shaped windows bring a nice modern balance. The kitchen is fully stocked. Mökki offers a bar fridge, propane stove top, kettle, drip cone coffee maker, pots, pans, dishes and spices. Note that there is crock pot in lieu of an oven. The sound of the harbor seagulls are sure to make you feel like you are on an ocean front stay.
A quaint, walkable area, the cabin is nestled just across from the local library and one street away from lake Superior and the old Gunflint Trail road.

  • Excellent location for Grand Marais, with a view of the water and tons of charm. This is a unique space, perfect to match our activities at the North House folk school. Prepare for a bath, not a shower as you're encouraged to live life at a different pace. A wonderful way to visit Grand Marais.

  • The best Airbnb I’ve ever stayed at! Wholeheartedly recommend

    Claire2020-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • The Birdhouse was a fun, inspiring getaway spot for winter fun. Space heater is super sufficient, just plan ahead and dial the heat way back before you climb into bed! We loved the beers next door at Voyageur and the short walk to their beautiful food co-op....among all of the views and proximity to skiing!

    Aimee2020-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • Great place with lots of character, located right in the heart of Grand Marais. Perfect for a winter getaway in northern MN.

Mökki is the perfect mix of cozy log cabin and hip downtown life. This charming abode is located along a quiet street - just a block away from main street. It is within a short walk of Grand Marais' restaurants, pubs, shops, sailboat harbor, folk school, art colony and more.
Mökki, a Finnish word for cottage, was hand crafted by the owner and is a masterful work of art. Enjoy some down time on the front porch or cozy up in the sleeping loft - this place has a lot of charm. Surrounding the cabin is a large yard with garden beds and plenty of tree cover. The cabin sleeps up to 3; there is 1 queen bed in the loft and 1 single pull-out on the main floor. Please note that the stairs to the bedroom are steep - it is not a ladder so rest assured that the steps can be descended normally, aka by facing forward. The kitchen is equipped with a two burner electric stove, a mini fridge, a microwave, pots, pans, silverware, dishes and glassware. For your coffee you can choose from a drip cone or a coffee maker. This snug cabin has all you'll need for your northern getaway.
A quaint, walkable area, the cabin is nestled just across from the local library and one street away from lake Superior and the old Gunflint Trail road.
  • This was the perfect place to stay for our weekend in Grand Marais. It's located extremely close to the fun things in town, but you still get the secluded cabin feeling. The cabin was stocked with great amenities - and they even had a basket with toiletries in case you forgot something. I would recommend this cabin to any couple who is looking for a great place to stay in Grand Marais!

    Gretchen2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • A delightful cabin just steps away from everything in Grand Marais. It was thoughtfully outfitted with everything you need, without feeling cluttered. Clean and bright and charming. Just a short drive from wonderful cross country skiing and hiking.

  • This is a terrific, efficient and easy place to stay in Grand Marais. Very basic but more than adequate. We’ve stayed twice while taking classes at the Folk House School across the street and it was perfect both times!

  • Great location and a beautiful place.

  • Cute little cabin in easy walking distance of everything in Grand Marais!

    Elizabeth2020-01-24T00:00:00Z
  • This little Dovetail cabin was a perfect landing spot for our trip to Grand Marais. The location was great for us - just a block off the main highway through town, and right behind the local brewery, but still situated in a quiet residential neighborhood. We easily walked from the cabin all around downtown and the lakefront. The cabin is small, but offered everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Even during a cold January weekend (low temps below zero at night) it was cozy; we actually turned the heater down at night, since heat rising to the sleeping loft made it almost too warm up there. Stevie was prompt with messages and provided detailed info about arrival, parking, etc.

    Tammy2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect lil cabin for home base in Grand Marais, will stay again!

  • We had a wonderfully peaceful stay at Janet’s tucked away cabin retreat! The shower water has a slight sulphur smell but anyone who has ever had the luxury of soaking in hot springs will understand it is not bad at all... rather refreshing after a 2 hour wilderness hike! She does provide bottled water so don’t expect to drink the tap. There are also basic necessities available in the cabin in case you’ve left something at home, in my case a hair dryer! Very comfortable, clean, and adorable place. View of the stars is amazing! I read other people heard the train go by, but I never did.

  • We stayed in Janet's cabin in it way into Quetico park. The location was excellent for us and the cabin was very cozy and comfortable. We enjoyed walking down all the back roads nearby and especially loved sitting on the porch reading for hours. Janet provided plenty of bottled water for us to drink and cook with and we slept like the dead on her comfortable beds.

This host goes out if her way to make sure everything you need is in cabin. We loved the wood stove, we appreciated the cable TV , and internet. Our dog , Charlotte loved exploring the yard and hanging out in front of the wood stove. This place is super cute, comfortable, modern, and clean. It has the quintessential charm of a north wood cabin ! Can’t go wrong by staying here! High recommend!

  • Very clean and amazing communication. Hilary's place is totally as advertised.

    Conner2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • This cabin was simply perfect for our recent stay! My husband and I brought our two dogs up for a weekend of winter hiking, and this cabin was amazing. Super homey. We felt very comfortable there. Loved warming up by the fire, relaxing in the living room after a long day. Hilary responded very quickly to questions we had prior to arrival. Location was perfect — not too close, not too far. It was a home away from home. If we could keep this cabin our little secret, we probably would. But that would mean that nobody else would get to enjoy such a wonderful getaway on the North Shore! Thanks for making our weekend away absolutely amazing. Highly recommend.

    Angie2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay here! The cabin was cozy & fabulous. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook our meals. We loved how rustic & beautiful the cabin was. The cabin is located right off of Gun Flint Trail, making adventures super easy. The night sky is full of stars. A few things to note: -there’s only 1 dog bowl -Bring an eye mask & ear plugs if someone in your group is a early bird or night owl. There’s no door separating the living room/kitchen from the bedroom. Thanks so much for the stay, it was great!

    Jenna2020-02-14T00:00:00Z
  • Cozy cabin is private yet conveniently located to Grand Marais. Bathroom is very nice. Kitchen is good, well-equipped. Hilary provided excellent communication and customer service when there was an unexpected issue.

    Carol2020-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • The location of this cabin is awesome - close to town and close to all of the ski trails. We even explored the cabin’s property on our skis this morning after the fresh snowfall & it was gorgeous. The cabin itself is adorable and cozy. The beds and pullout sofa were all very comfortable. There are even lots of DVD’s, a smart tv, and toys for kids. Our 3 year old daughter was more than entertained for the couple of days we spent here. The only bummer was that the fireplace glass was broken so we couldn’t use it, but Hilary reached out prior to our stay to inform us so at least it was anticipated and not a huge deal. The bathroom is awesome, but the shower head wasn’t super great. The bathroom in-floor heat was a luxury, though, for our post-ski, chilly toes. Overall, it was an excellent stay and we will definitely stay here again on our future trips to Grand Marais!

    * Sauna available November-March. A new timber frame cabin 4 miles from Grand Marais, the perfect distance to feel like you are in the woods and still run to town whenever you choose. It is filled with windows to capture the amazing Lake Superior vistas plus a big skylight to stargaze and watch the northern lights. Grab your coffee and walk down to the pebble beach across the road or hang out on the big cedar deck and watch the waves crash on Five Mile Rock. Instagram/Face book @aguanortemn
*** Please read ALL info, specially 'Other Things to Notice' section. The cabin is located in a 10 acre parcel, nested in between evergreen trees and gorgeous Lake Superior. The property is full of wild life, birds, butterflies, wild flowers and wild berries. It is the perfect spot for a couple looking for a romantic and peaceful getaway, or a single person in search of quietude. The 16'x20' cabin was built in 2014. The white pine timbers that compose the frame were locally and sustainably logged, sawed and treated by us, the owners. It has 8 huge windows and a cathedral ceiling, making this tiny home very airy, elegant and modern. The open loft has a huge skylight for stargaze and it can be accessed by a ships ladder. It has been designed with 2 people in mind, and although we don't encourage more than two, it can accommodate a party of 4 in a very cozy way. The kitchen has full size appliances, doug fir cabinets, blue quartz countertop and a black walnut bar top with two bar stools. It is a beautiful place to cook your meals and enjoy the lake view. It has a fridge and freezer, 4 burner electric stove with oven, coffee maker, blender and all needed cooking and baking utensils. There is a TV and DVD player on the loft, and a TV with an Apple TV in the living room. Please bring your own credentials to access channels on Apple TV. The bathroom is truly spa like: beautiful, spacious and airy. It has cedar wood paneling, beach pebble shower floor, a white vessel sink and two closets. A washer and dryer set are also located in the bathroom and available for guests to use. Please do read all instructions before using it. Outside, the fire pit overlooks Lake Superior and the vegetable garden, and it is conveniently located by the picnic table. It is the perfect spot for an evening bonfire. The garden is located about 10 yards west of the cabin and you are welcome to pick veggies for your dinner. The watering hose is connected to the outside of the north wall of the cabin and we will access it whenever we are working the garden (If you enjoy gardening and would like to take care of it, by all means! Just let us know ;) Oh, and keep an eye out for all the bald eagles! The big tall spruce tree on the edge of the cliff overlooking the lake is the hangout area for these beautiful birds. It is basically guaranteed that you will see one or a couple hanging out on the three and being harassed by crows and seagulls.
The timber frame cabin is located only 4 miles East of Grand Marais (towards Canada). It is the perfect distance to have the 'in the woods' feeling, and still run to town when you choose. The very private 10 acre property is surrounded by evergreen trees on 3 sides, and Lake Superior on its south side.
  • This cabin was beautiful! Will definitely come back to Grand Marais and stay here. It was the perfect getaway. Would highly recommend this cabin!

The hosts were responsive and had everything all ready for our stay. The cabin is a convenient 5 minutes from town. The coolest parts of the cabin are the skylight above the bed and the expansive patio with a view of the lake. We can’t say enough good things about this place! We will certainly be back for another visit!

  • A quiet stay that was a perfect landing place for a few days of exploring the north shore in winter. We loved hearing the waves of Lake Superior and being close to several state parks with hiking trails. The sauna was easy to use and the cabin is beautiful, cozy and warm. The kitchen had what we needed for preparing meals too. We would recommend this cabin to friends and family :) Thank you!

  • This small cabin is exactly as advertised, but we found it to be even better than we expected. If you appreciate design and attention to detail, along with a fabulous location far up the North Shore, and if you do not demand every modern luxury while at a cabin in the woods, you will be delighted with this place.

    Nicolle2019-12-26T00:00:00Z
  • A quiet little cabin in the woods, just across the street from Lake Superior. The craftsmanship of this hand-built cabin was impressive. We enjoyed everything about it. Simple, quiet and enjoyable. We especially enjoyed the wood-fire sauna. Can't wait to go back!

    Jared2019-12-23T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin was exactly as pictured. A nice small space for hanging out and relaxing in the woods. You’re right off the side road but there’s almost no traffic so privacy is great! The sauna was easy to use and a great amenity in the winter. The stove worked like a charm and the gas heater kept the place warm in subzero temps. A lot of kitchen supplies are provided if you are wondering what you actually need to bring to cook!

The Writer's Cabin is a quaint, long established residence hidden in the oldest part of town. This historic cabin has been fully restored and modernized. It has a fireplace, a two person jetted tub, private setting, full kitchen, direct TV, vaulted ceilings, beams, windows, skylight, private patio with table and chairs, close to the harbor and all the attractions of town. This is an established vacation rental with great history- be the next chapter in the long story that is the Writer's Cabin.
The Writer's Cabin has been fully restored and modernized to provide all the creature comforts and yet remain historic in nature. Set amidst lush landscaping, the cabin is only steps from the harbor. All amenities are provided including an enameled cast iron gas fireplace, a therapeutic air tub for two, a top of the line queen bed, a well equipped modern kitchen, satellite TV with flat screen and theatre surround, an antique secretary writing desk, high speed wireless internet, and various objects of interest representative of famous writers and local writers including locally written books and Ernest Hemmingway's favorite model of typewriter. This is a fantastic location close to everything. Many of our guests ache for a connection with nature (with high thread count sheets), reconnection with each other, and permission to come to a full stop for deep rest. No one says this out loud, but we think that’s their intrinsic motivation. We professionally deep clean between all guests. Ask about our "Social Distancing" vacation discount for extended stays. With nine windows and one skylight, there is great natural light throughout the little cabin. Seagulls and fog greet you when you rise. The grounds of the property are planted with a variety of native and boreal flowering plants, flowering shrubs and fruit trees. It is a garden like setting with various perennial, annual, and produce plantings. The outdoor space has a balanced blend of sun and shade, functionality and whimsicality. This is a space intended as an exclusive retreat from the rigors of small town life. It is designed so that you can be as private as your vacation requires. Dense schrubs and tall fences ensure your own seclusion. Visitors are encouraged to flag down the owners if you see them. If you wish to enjoy the The Finnish Sauna house next door, it is available for the duration of your stay for up to 4 uses for a one time fee of $49. Robes, extra towels and instructions will be provided. Pets: We want to be accepting of dogs. We love our dogs. But if we incur property damage from dogs we will remove ourselves from accepting dogs. Most vacation rentals in our region do not accept dogs and we want to keep this option open. Our future is up to you. If you love dogs and dog culture, please be a good ambassador of dog culture and let’s keep this good thing going. Only dogs- no other animals- are allowed with an acceptance of the pet addendum and pet fee of $30. Guests will receive a pet fee request once the reservation process is complete and prior to arrival. Up to one very well behaved dog up to 60lbs and their owners that are in agreement with our policies are welcome. If the dog is over 60 lbs or if there is more than one, Guests will provide to owner the following information: Type of pet, Name, Weight, Age and owner will confirm or ask questions. So send us a message and we will get back to you right away. If your dog is not habituated to portable kennels please contact us. All pets must comply with the following specifications: A) Must not exceed 60 lbs unless approved B) Must be at least 1 year old C) Must be up to date on rabies vaccinations and all other vaccinations. Heart worm preventative is highly recommended. Other important pet requirements: 1) No dogs can be left unattended for any length of time without portable kennels. Pets can get nervous in new surroundings and cause property damage with scraping, urinating, and can cause irritation to neighbors with barking or howling when you leave for dinner etc... If you have any issues with keeping your pet in a portable kennel please let us know. If your dogs are not comfortable or have not been habituated to a portable kennel you are perfectly welcome to put your pets in the car with you when you leave as long as it is not too warm out- which rarely happens in Grand Marais. 2)Your dog is never allowed off leash. Grand Marais has a leash law, and we have busy roads nearby and resident dogs on all sides that do not need the provocation. 3)Please clean up after your pet immediately, do not wait until you are completing your stay. Garbage cans are available on site. Do not let your dog do their business right near the home or near the sidewalks, and especially not on the corners of the home, the fences or rock walls. Try to get off property when doing business. 4)There are many great walks for you and your dog, if you need tips let us know. But just going down to the harbor is a great treat for most. Taking them just up the hill to the grassy curbside areas is a quick way to take care of business and is popular with the doggos. And if you want some space for them to run off leash there is a dog park up the hill. Ask us how to find it. 5)No dogs on beds or furniture without a clean, freshly washed blanket that you provide that they can’t scrape away. We use quality quilts and bed coverings and very expensive sofa material and dogs can not be allowed to scratch it and claw as it instinctively as they prepare to lay down. Thanks so much for your respect and consideration. We would love to meet your dog! We are happy to provide local knowledge on any activities, attractions, latest scuttlebut, or any other needs you may have. Feel free to contact us. Todd and Susan.
This is a very old neighborhood right near the harbor. It is a rare setting that the owners restored and preserved. It represents the Scandanavian tradition of creating micro neighborhoods within an existing neigborhood. You will see this throughout Grand Marais. It is very safe and surprisingly quiet considering it is a commercial downtown location. The noise of Hwy 61 is nicely distanced, as is the noise of the original Gunflint Trail. This particular setting is very close to all the action of town, but comfortably removed when you need a breather from all the excitement. We feel very lucky to own this special spot. Music can be heard in summer wafting through the air, fireworks are right out your front door on rare, special nights. The comings and goings of village life are all around you, yet still... this is a very private and serene location. This home is positioned on a small gravel ally with it's own driveway, it is not on a busy road.
  • Very comfortable bed with just the right amenities for a quiet, simple stay. Highly recommend the sauna option for those looking for the max relaxation from their experience.

  • The Writer’s Cabin has everything you could possibly need! It was a great stay and we’d definitely recommend.

  • Cute, cozy little cabin! Great tips for local attractions.

    Stephanie2020-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • Ideally located in Grand Marais, the Writer's Den is a perfect weekend getaway. Loved all the local books and the FM radio made listening to North Shore Radio the perfect accompaniment to the stay!

    Brian2019-12-15T00:00:00Z
  • The Writer’s Cabin is a great size for 2 people and has every amenity you would need. The bedroom is cozy, the living room warm with a fire place, and the kitchen has everything for cooking meals. The vaulted ceilings with exposed beams are super cool and add to the space. And the location is a block from all the downtown Grand Marais activities. I would stay there again!

    Sam2019-12-08T00:00:00Z
  • Great place, centrally located in Grand Marais. Each square inch of the cabin is used thoughtfully. We'll definitely stay here again.

    Lindsy2019-12-01T00:00:00Z
  • To be or not to be? Whatever the question's subject, this place is the answer. Each day you will nestle yourself deeper into the Writer's Cabin and grow accustomed to the other buildings in the property as a hidden community out amongst the beautiful setting.

    Bryan2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • This charming cottage is centrally located and less than 300 feet from the harbor. Less than a block from coffee shops, breweries, and restaurants, this was a perfect place to launch an exploration of Grand Marais and all of the stunning scenery in the area. The "Cabin" had everything needed after a long day of hiking (hot tub, kitchen, and even a sauna on property). Todd was extremely communicative and made even a last minute reservation a breeze! I can't wait for my next visit "up north"!

The 'Lighthouse' is a special lodging overlooking the town and harbor of Grand Marais from it's center. You are right in the heart of town within a block of everything. Ask us about our "Social Distancing Vacation" for longer stays. Discounts will apply. Very popular vacation rental with loyal, returning clientele. And now something new: a new Finnish sauna is available on site- see details. Professionally deep cleaned after each stay.
You are right in the heart of town within a block of everything- yet comfortably removed when you need a breather. You can sit up in bed and view the harbor and the big lake beyond. Your own private parking leads to the stairway that takes you up to the Lighthouse. The view of the old harbor from the balcony is stunning. There is a wrought iron table and chairs on the balcony for relaxing. Inside the Lighthouse you will find a queen bed, tile shower and bathroom, galley kitchen, custom dining table for two, LCD TV with satalite TV and blueray. The bed is set at an angle and faces southeast to capture the views of the harbor in the morning through large windows. Many of our guests ache for a connection with nature (with high thread count sheets), reconnection with each other, and permission to come to a full stop for deep rest. No one says this out loud, but we think that’s their intrinsic motivation. There are transom windows around the perimeter of the apartment so that if you stand in the center you have a 360 degree view of the sky. Notice how it changes as the day progresses. Observe the color differences around sunset or early in the morning as the Great Lake passes through it's moods. The ceiling is very high and is vaulted and timberframed with unique 'Dragon Beams' from local timberframe artisans. Topping the lighthouse is an octagonal cupola that lets light in all day and moonlight at night. And on top of the cuppola is a custom copper ball, in keeping with the lighthouses of the North Shore. An antique ship's light occupies the cuppola and can guide you as you walk home after a night of festivities in the town. Seagulls are your companions and you may hear their webby feet tapping on the roof in the morning. Watch the fog roll in and out from your bed while you drink your morning coffee, and listen to the strains of local live music as the town celebrates the short summers at night. The galley kitchen is small but thoroughly modern with all the necessities. The Lighthouse is above the 'North Shore Fisherman's Cabin', a restored historic log home and vacation rental and is next door to the 'Writer's Cabin' and 'The Boathouse' a recently constructed timberframe home that is the residence of the owners. You are always welcome to drop in to the Boathouse and see what project is under way. Currently the owner is building an Alaskan skiff, and preparing another boat for excursions to the Canadian North Shore. If you are traveling with a large group, consider including the neighboring Fisherman's and Writer's cabin rentals which share the property. There is capacity for a group of 12 or so if you rent all the cabins. You can get the whole family reunion or wedding group on one site! The Lighthouse is known for it's inspiring charm. There have been plays and musicals written here, a handfull of marriage proposals, and a good number of honeymoons. Come share the fantastic energy that is The Lighthouse. Update: a Finnish Sauna has been installed on the property. For a one time fee of $49 you can have access to the sauna, receive robes and additional towels, and instructions for use. It is right next door.
This is the heart of old Grand Marais. The Lighthouse is part of it's own micro neighborhood inside the Harborview neighborhood of Grand Marais. We are very near the water, North House Folk School, the Art Colony, Java Moose Coffee house, and all the restaurants and entertaimnent. Everything is in short walking distance. Once you've arrived you can leave your keys on the counter- you won't need your car.
  • Cute as button and the view is breathtaking.

  • Todd and Susan’s lighthouse is the perfect spot for a getaway. It’s within walking distance of downtown Grand Marais and offers great views of Lake Superior. We followed many of Todd and Susan’s recommendations and had a wonderful time snowshoeing on Pincushion Mountain, drinking beer at Voyageur Brewery and basking in the sauna. We can’t wait to come back!

Cozy student housing featuring all sorts of handmade art, found natural nicknacks and a bunch of school textbooks. This is an apartment building that tends to be quiet and relatively noise free. There is guest parking around the back that you can park your car. The house is equipped with everything that you need, including all dishes and cooking supplies. Please take all food with you out of the fridge! The apartment is pretty centrally located in the more northern end. It is about a half hour walk downtown (straight down red river Street), about a 15 minute walk to Walmart, LCBO and no frills (just up red river Street). Beer store, pizza pizza, pizza hut, little Caesars, Wendy's, McDonald, and Arby's are all within steps of the apartment. Lots of hiking in the nearby area, with Mount McKay being a 15 minute drive, sleeping giant is about an hour drive, Centennial park is 10 minute drive, and Trowbridge falls is about a 15 minute drive. This is my place during school, and I've made it very homey. It's not much, but it's a good place to relax and hang out while adventuring the nearby area. The tv and PS4 is available to use. If you need help turning it on, please feel free to call. There is also a dongle and HDMI cable if you're looking to hookup to the tv as well. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to message or call. There is someone in town looking after the apartment. Enjoy your stay :)

Do to the new global precautions we are all taking with regards to the free loading flu bug that is travelling the world uninvited, I am making sure this apartment is as germ and virus free as I can. I use a bleach solution and wipe all areas that hands will touch. From the keys for the doors, to door knobs and handles, to the remote and arms and seat cushions on the leather furniture. Bleach the floor and washroom as well. The bedding and towels are washed and the blankets and pillows are added to the dryer on very high heat for 40 minutes. The mattress and carpet are sprayed with lysol germ killing spray. The rest is up to you. Do not touch your eyes, nose, ears and mouth. Main and second floor of home are shared with the home owner and other respectful tenants and Airbnb guests. Enjoy the spacious backyard. BBQ or cook in your private kitchen. Park within your own off road parking space. Close to the Thunder Bay International Airport, the mall, groceries, Starbucks, movie theater, parks, golf course, library, restaurants, taverns, Con College and Lakehead University. During your stay if there is anything you need please let me know. Wifi network is redroaster. Password is my cell number 8074720100
This studio apartment is entirely open concept. It has a private entrance around the back of the house. Which includes private laundry facilities, private kitchen and private shower. Ideal for one person or a couple. There are no walls so if you need privacy around the shower, there are curtains that hang off of hooks that will provide that privacy. One curtain is hanging along side the other hanging curtain behind the kitchen cupboards and the other is folded on the shelf.
There is a park across the street with basket ball nets and play ground equipment. There are many wonderful places to go for a walk or bike from this homes front door. The paths meander the river through the golf course to and beyond both the college and university.
  • Very nice place. Paul was very accommodating and spoke with me when I arrived. The bed was super comfortable and the place was very clean. I had a quiet night and the area was just a little bit away from the hustle and bustle which was nice. I would recommend Paul's place to anyone wanting a nice little spot for a warm, cozy stay.

  • Amazing and relaxing weekend winter getaway. The quaint wood stove and the quiet natural surrounding landscape (hiking trails across the street) were selling features. Thoughtful touches included fresh breakfast foods, like butter and fresh bread, yoghurt and milk. Hosts were only a text away if needed, but fully respected our space. We will certainly come back here again!

  • The cottage is in a nice location with great amenities as well! The fireplace was my favorite part of the stay. Otherwise, the cottage itself is perfect for a little getaway!!

  • My experience was pleasant and relaxing. The cabin has a cozy feel and private. Worth the stay! Thx Irene.

  • By far my best Airbnb experience. I would definitely come again. Everything was on point and more.

  • Beautiful cottage style, 5 mins outside of city quiet area worth the drive, very clean, provided cottage with milk bread bagels coffee etc, amazing host, she answered fast, very cozy enjoyed a movie while watching t.v and wrapping gifts with the wood stove burning... We will return again...

    Ashley2019-12-22T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to stay at. It had everything we needed and even had extras in case you forget something. Very cute and quiet. Will definitely recommend!

    Jessica2019-10-29T00:00:00Z
  • The space is very cozy and the perfect stay for what we needed. Located right by the highway and parking is available right in front so it made unloading stuff so much easier.

    Noori2019-10-23T00:00:00Z
  • A cozy cabin nestled on a treed property away from the city, but close enough to it. Loved the breakfast foods that Irene stocks. Bread, butter (yes butter!) milk, eggs, yogurt, cereal and Tim Horton’s coffee. Nice to wake up and have a breakfast before heading out for the day. The wood stove was an added bonus for the chilly fall evenings. Irene was very responsive and very accommodating with a very early check in as our flight arrived before noon. We will definitely stay here again when we come up to visit our daughter, son-in-law and precious grandson.

And of course Grand Marais is always a lovely place to spend the day. Ramona’s place is delightful with many thoughtful touches. My husband and I look forward to our next stay. Sandy and Mike

  • Beautiful setting! Wonderful host. Everything you need. A northern MN paradise!

    Michele2019-10-23T00:00:00Z
  • If you are headed up the North Shore, make sure to stay at Romona’s. The views of Superior from your window are stunning, and a beautiful way to great the morning. I highly suggest watching the sunrise from the stairs, and if you’re lucky enough to go up on a full moon, be sure to catch the glimmer of moonlight on the lake.

    Brittany2019-10-19T00:00:00Z
  • Ramona was an excellent host. Incredibly informative and the space was everything you could need. Would highly recommend.

    Luke2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • This is the best place I have ever stayed, the views, the home, the host Ramona... it is all absolutely amazing! It's honestly majestic! We were there when it was windy and the waves crashing on to the shoreline and rocks was the most beautiful thing to see. Ramona let us walk around her property to take pictures and it was the best photos we have ever taken. I am forever a repeat customer and cant come back soon enough!! Thank you so much Ramona!! You and your property are a true gem!!!!

    Kristin2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful cottage on the North Shore. Perfect for a weekend away from all of the stress of the city.

    Eric2019-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at Ramona's was fantastic! The place was sparkly clean and comfortable. The property, view, and the lake we're beyond compare! We both agreed, that a weekend there is not long enough, it was just that great!

    Julie2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful place in a gorgeous setting. Only issue for us is that being older, we use the restroom during the night. So the fact that the bedroom is upstairs and the bathroom is downstairs, was a bit of a hassle. Other than that...a wonderful place.

Placed along the gorgeous Fall River, this A-frame cabin has a secluded wilderness feel, just two miles from Grand Marais. Take advantage of Grand Marais' renowned restaurants, shops, and shoreline or relax by your river-side campfire after a day of exploration or relaxation. Explore the rivers, and trails of this 25 acre wooded lot. Rest or catch up on a good book in the sun-filled and spacious interior, from a hammock between two birch trees, or on the large front deck surrounded by nature.
Our family loves hiking the north shore's rivers and always thought it would be great to have a cabin on one of those great rivers. Here it is! Even though the cabin is located only a mile from the shore of Lake Superior and 2.5 miles from Grand Marais, it maintains a truly North woods, off grid feel: a winding private gravel road heads up the hill from Lake Superior, crossing over a small creek, where you'll park at the trail head. From there you'll hike 400 yards (about a 5 minute walk) on a foot path to this charming cabin in the woods, perched along the bluff of the Fall River. A cart is available if you want it. The cabin has a well equipped kitchen with pots and pans, silverware, glassware, a propane stovetop, a double insulated cooler, and over 30 gallons of water for drinking, dishes, and cleaning. There is a cozy bedroom downstairs with a queen bed and up the spiral staircase is a window-filled loft with three twin beds. All beds will be supplied with pillows and bedding. There is a small solar powered system supporting the lighting for the bedroom, kitchen, and loft and a phone charger. The Sun-Mar compost toilet is environmentally friendly, convenient, and comfortable. The deck and included hammocks offer the opportunity to relax and bask in the 25 acre wood and listen to the river run. Some will enjoy splashing in the river, or swimming beneath the waterfall where the Fall River meets the lake. Some will use the supplied solar shower or buy a day-pass to the Grand Marais YMCA (around $10) to take advantage of the gym, workout facility, showers, hot tub, sauna, and pool. The newly constructed A-frame (2019-2020) is comfortable with many windows and a vaulted ceiling that offer abundant natural lighting and breezes. Kids and adults alike will enjoy walking along the bank or through the moving water of the larger Fall River, or racing sticks, and rock searching on the smaller creek. From the cabin, expect to see deer, squirrels, and birds ranging from songbirds to woodpeckers, grouse, ravens, and bald eagles. The woods are also home to less frequent visitors like black bear and moose. Coyote and timber-wolves can be heard howling nearby as well. Also keep an eye out for edible (and non-edible) mushrooms as well as wild raspberries. All of this, a short bike ride, run, or drive from the Lake Superior shoreline and Grand Marais!
Close to Lake Superior and Grand Marais, surrounded by 25 acres of mixed forests, Fall river, and babbling creek.
