Places to stay in Gakona
Our place is right on The Gulkana River. You’ll love our sauna, skiing, and 77-acre homestead. We are off the grid (no electricity), but have a sink, wood stove (we start for you), clean outhouse (no indoor toilet) and plenty of water that we haul for you. Outdoor shower is very rustic. Gulkana River Ranch is a haven for those wishing to be close to nature and experience bush Alaska as it used to be. Mod cons quite limited: Instagram-worthy photos plentiful:) Adventure awaits the hearty soul!
The cabin is about a half mile from us by private road. You have no neighbors. You can hike to our house easily via steep ridge if you wish. It is about a quarter mile hike and a scenic view of the valley, river and mountains.
Our neighborhood is unique in that it isn't really a neighborhood by standard definition. We are close enough if you need us, but far enough to give you space. The closest neighbor to our house is about a quarter mile away.
  • Our cabin stay at Gulkana River Ranch was wonderful. The cabin was spacious, yet cozy. The views were great, and we spent quite some time outside by the campfire. There’s even a separate sauna that can be heated up and enjoyed. Kelly was also a wonderful host, and ga e us tips for local trips and hikes, and made sure we had food for breakfast. Great stay!

  • Amazing location for a real alaskan experience!!! the house was already warm when we arrived and Kelly left us planty of wood and water as well. The outhouse has the best view ever! I would like to come back and stay a few days more. Thank you Kelly!

  • Great place to stay, my daughter and I enjoyed it immensely.

  • The forest lodge, returning to nature, will make you have an unforgettable memory. You can use a horse lantern and have enough edible water. The road to the cabin is very narrow. The landlord is friendly and takes us to the hut. I have breakfast with ingredients and I feel good overall. I will rent it next time.

    Xian Xiang2019-09-14T00:00:00Z
  • We had a fantastic time here, the sauna was amazing and we saw the northern lights.

    Anne2019-09-09T00:00:00Z
  • This cabin was awesome! It is just as it is advertised, a rustic, beautiful retreat from it all. The outhouse was spotless and did offer the best view!

    Devin2019-09-03T00:00:00Z
  • Great location. Much better than I expected

    Tyler2019-08-23T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin was great. The location is really amazing. We didn’t try the shower and didn’t need the heat, but the stove worked well and there was plenty of water. I would definitely recommend Kelly’s cabin to others.

My place is close to Salmon Fishing in the Gulkana River, Historical Gakona Lodge, and Wrangell St. Elias National Park. My place is good for couples and solo adventurers. Rafting trips offered by local guides. Please contact us for details.
It's located in the heart of Alaska. Lot's of space and privacy and nature.
  • We were the lasts guests of the summer during a rainy period, and passing through for an overnight. So we didn't do much sitting on the deck or outdoor activities. The cabin is beautifully built, was comfortable and would be a great base of operations for summer explorations and fishing.

    Eileen2019-09-21T00:00:00Z
  • They’re very welcoming and make sure you can find them in a remote area. The space is nice and large for two people.

  • We were traveling through on our way to Valdez and were only able to stay for one night, but Buck's Cabin would be a great place for an extended trip. We had a nice chat with Brad at check in. The cabin had a big coffee pot with coffee provided, so overall a good experience!

    Charlie & Andra2019-09-10T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful cabin on a private lot. Perfect for enjoying an evening around the campfire and getting restful sleep in a very comfortable space. The coffee maker and coffee were a welcomed surprise since we hadn't brought any. Hot running water! I highly recommend this listing.

  • What a great find! All the charm and privacy of a classic Alaska cabin experience, with COMFORTABLE BEDS—lots of space for our travel gear, too. Sunset on the front porch was amazing!

Older house near Gulkana River at the junction of the Richardson Highway and Tok Cutoff in Gakona. Fully furnished with dishes, silverware, and cooking supplies. Full refrigerator with freezer. Washer and dryer in second bathroom. Plenty of running water! You have the whole house with a private driveway. Hosts reside on adjoining property if there are any needs or issues. It may not be The Ritz, but it's a great base camp for your fishing, hunting, or sightseeing adventures.
You have access to the whole house and surrounding area except the garage. It has not been renovated for guests yet. Keep in mind there’s no Wi-Fi or cable TV. We offer DVD’s to watch when you’re not out exploring or enjoying the peace and quiet.
Close to fishing, beautiful views and abundant wildlife. Historic Roadhouse is just down the hill. Gulkana River is about a mile away.
  • Had a great time at Heidi's and she is wonderful. Her property is conveniently located to make day trips to Valdez, Wrangle St Elias, Slana, Tok or fish and hike locally.

    Ron2019-08-16T00:00:00Z
  • Heidi’s place is ideally located and offers nice amenities for a small group stay. We all had a really good time.

  • Great place to stay. Owner was helpful and courteous.

    Lauren2019-05-28T00:00:00Z
  • Heidi is awesome host. She went out of her way to help us with our flat tire issue and baked us chocolate chip cookie! It was really sweet of her. Her place was little confusing to find because there is no street address but she helped us find it right away. very fast responses! We loved our stay !

    Nina2018-09-06T00:00:00Z
  • Great place! Secluded and woodsy surroundings, yet not far from road and 15 min. from Glennallen. Kept comfortably warm with the heater, nice room darkening curtains for bedrooms for better sleeping in the long-light summer days! Full kitchen with coffee maker, pans, dishes, etc. for cooking up meals and saving $ from eating in!! The handy laundry facilities were VERY nice to have! We look forward to staying here again, for sure!

    Michal2018-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • If you're doing the drive around the interior, Heidi's place is the perfect place to roost between Fairbanks and Valdez. No-frills, spacious cabin set into the woods with the historic Gakona Lodge down the street. Heidi made sure we had a great stay with tips about the area.

    Pamela2018-07-30T00:00:00Z
  • My family and I enjoyed staying in Heidi’s guest house! The house is older and has a lot of character. It was in a private and secluded setting surrounded by trees. The house is in a quiet location, though you can very occasionally hear some road noise. There was plenty of room for 6 adults and two children to spread out in. The house was clean and is stocked with washer/dryer, dishwasher, coffee pot, towels, cookware, plates, bowls, and utensils. Heidi was pleasant and very easy to communicate with. She lives right next door so is readily available if anything is needed, but she was also respectful of our privacy. Would definitely stay here again!

    Julie2018-07-27T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed overnight at this place and it was comfortable and convenient. Heidi was always a message away and responded promptly. The place was spacious and comfortable. Heidi was very flexible as well with our requirements. We loved the personal touch of snack basket and a welcome note.

  • Jerry and Mel’s place was fantastic! If you are traveling with dogs like we were it’s always iffy about staying some place that is not your own. When arriving Jerry was awesome showing us around and how everything worked. The bed in the cabin was the most comfortable thing we have slept on in weeks! WiFi and cable out in the woods in Alaska is a huge plus! When checking out we got to meet their dogs and our two dogs and their two dogs had a fun time playing and running around. Can’t say enough about how great of a stay we had at Mel and Jerry’s place. Would recommend it to everyone!

    Erik2019-12-13T00:00:00Z
  • Mel and Jerry were wonderful and their property and cabins are great! They have the full set up, and made everything so easy and relaxing for us. We greatly enjoyed our stay, getting to know everyone, and the Northern lights display by the fire pit was amazing!

An "Earthly Paradise," we think so! Our custom built log home sits on a high bluff overlooking the mighty Copper River, with a jaw-dropping view of the Wrangell Mtns. Our 2 bedroom log home is an excellent place to base your Alaskan adventure.
You'll get the whole house, 3 acres of privacy, an amazing view, hammock on the bluff and all the amenities you need. The house was custom built by us, and has a very open floor plan. The master bedroom faces the mountains and the stunning view! Did we already mention that? The furniture is all brand new, and the decor is totally Alaskan. You will be off the beaten path, but within striking distance of much of the greatness Alaska has to offer! You'll have tv and wi-fi, cell phone towers are near-by. There is river rafting and king salmon fishing within minutes on the Gulkana and Klutina Rivers. Just down the road is the best restaurant in the Copper Basin, the historic Carriage House. You will be on the door step of Wrangell St. Elias National Park, the largest park in the nation. We can hook you up with local deals and incredible flightseeing!
Gakona was one of the original stops along the historic Valdez Trail. The Gakona Roadhouse is just down the road (also a great place to stay). Travelers used to dock in Valdez and make their way north to gold via dog sled in winter. Road houses were 15 to 20 miles apart and very few of them still exist. There is a rich history in the Copper Basin. Gakona lacks the glitz of some of the other road system tourist areas, but is rich with spectacular views, wonderful people, and many outdoor activities.
  • What a fantastic place with a breathtaking view. A cozy house and very well equipped. Perfect place to stay to discover the region.

    Christophe2019-09-21T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful location with view of mountains. Great, clean and well equipped house. Host very responsive It was little hard to find as it's inside a small gravel driveway and provided directions were not accurate.

    Tulika2019-07-23T00:00:00Z
  • This log home is absolutely gorgeous! It has an open floor plan to give it a spacious, airy feel, and it was sparkling clean. It has all the necessary amenities to make it feel like home away from home. The location is great too - it is situated above the Copper River with views of Mt. Sanford and Mt. Drum, and it is secluded and private. Sandy was very friendly, responsive, and a wonderful host! We will definitely stay here again!

    Julie2018-08-13T00:00:00Z
  • The view, the view, the view...the house is great, good space for relaxing, well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds...but the view is staggeringly beautiful and that’s what sets this house apart.

    Mary2018-08-03T00:00:00Z
  • Very secluded cabin North of Glennallen. Once we found the place, everything was perfect. Word of advice, do NOT plug in the address and hope to find the cabin, but follow their directions! The cabin views were amazing, we even saw evidence of moose but not so lucky to actually see one. You can tell this cabin is a labor of love. We would definitely stay here again if we ever get to this part of Alaska again.

    Teresa2018-06-26T00:00:00Z
  • Cute cabin with gorgeous view

    Natalie2017-08-22T00:00:00Z
  • The house is beautifully situated, you have a magnificent view. It's a great house. We were welcomed by the neighbor who immediately suggested us beautiful walks. It is highly recommended and so worth a visit to Sandy's place.

  • Room was spacious and clean. Super cute dog that roams around the property. The tavern and the bartender are great. We watched virtual reality videos with him. There was also an old school Ms Pac-Man game in the tavern. Breakfast was delicious with lots of options. Only change we'd make is to add a sign or note in the room that breakfast is self serve in the restaurant

Nicely furnished rustic cabin nestled among large spruce trees. Located near the Gulkana River Bridge (13 miles north of Glennallen). Cabin is also located just 8 miles from the historic Gakona Roadhouse and the Copper River.
Beautiful views of the magnificent Wrangell Mountains abound in the area. The cabin is secluded and has a south facing view. No person on site and check in is either by phone or in Anchorage. The cabin is 1/3 mile from the highway. Road is not plowed in the winter. This is a remote cabin (vehicle accessible) and directions/check-in are provided by phone unless passing through Anchorage. There is no running water, electricity, or WIFI, and toilet facilities are provided by an outhouse. Guests must bring their own water and sleeping bags unless Anchorage check-in (which can be completed a few days in advance of the stay) . If Anchorage check-in, full water containers and linens will be provided. Cabin does have a propane cooking stove, battery powered lighting, a wood stove/firewood, and kitchen supplies (pots, pans, dishes, silverware). There is excellent cell phone service with AT&T and GCI. The "Award Winning" comfortable upstairs king bed is accessed by a factory made ladder as shown in the photographs. This ladder may be difficult for elderly or handicapped persons to climb. No showers are available at the cabin, but are available 15 minutes away at a RV Park and may possibly be available at the Gakona Lodge. This place is designed for the person who enjoys a rustic, natural, pleasant, peaceful setting, or who just wants a place to crash while on the road. It is available at an economical price for those who are willing to sacrifice a few amenities. Most guests love it. Lots of mosquitoes in the area during the first part of the summer. It is requested that guests leave the cabin in a clean, tidy condition when they depart for the next guests since nobody is available on site. If You Are Looking For A true Alaskan Experience This Is It!! I personally come here occasionally to unwind!
  • The place was awesome! Everything we hoped and more. It was so nice to have a warm place to stay and a mattress to sleep on after a day snowshoeing out in the cold. We couldn't have asked for a better place to have as a "home base". Donald great to work with and quick to answer any questions we had. Would stay here again in a heartbeat!

    Casey2019-12-29T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful place to stay! Donald was so accommodating and easy to work with. The cabin is exactly what we were looking for, a true Alaskan retreat.

    Douglas2019-12-16T00:00:00Z
  • This was a highlight of our trip. It was definitely a rustic cabin, but exactly as advertised. We enjoyed using the wood stove. It was a great experience and Donald was a really good guy.

    Lynn2019-08-12T00:00:00Z
  • Donald went out of his way to communicate clearly and effectively about how to find his cabin and to make check-in simple. His cabin is clean and well-appointed, which can be a feat without running water or electricity! His place is a great value and I would gladly stay here again.

We are close to Glennallen and on the road system. It is a private cabin with a kitchen, living room, queen size sofa bed, large loft with 2 queen beds a walk in closet. There are breakfast items which include orange juice, bagels, oatmeal, yogurt and breakfast bars. We are very close to stores and National Park Visitors Center.
  • Home away from home, just wished there were curtains on front windows.

  • Great little cabin! We wished we could stay longer.

  • What a hidden gem. A wonderful little cabin. Super clean with everything you need including a shower! And the toyo heater kept the place toasty warm. I would recommend this place to anyone needing a place to stay in/near Glenallen in any season. Hope to get back again for more than just an overnighter :).

    Flash2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • This cabin is perfect! If you're headed to Valdez, down towards the Anchorage area, up to Tok or anywhere in between then this is definitely a very nice place to stop and refresh/recharge. The bed is very warm and comfortable so don't worry about resting well. It was nice and warm inside during my stay. I booked her cabin on short notice and she responded in a matter of minutes. I couldn't have asked for anything better during my stay. Ill definitely be stopping here again.

  • I couldn’t be happier with my voice for this past weekend. This cabin is not only beautiful and warm/cozy, but is in the perfect location! Incredibly easy to find, which was a plus! Thank you so much Katherine for your quick responses, we will be back soon:)

    Giovanni2019-10-26T00:00:00Z
  • Katherine's cozy & charming cabin was such an amazing getaway! She is a wonderful host who even left bagels & snacks for to have in the morning. My girlfriend & I had a wonderful experience staying here. Highly recommended! :)

    Clark2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • This cabin is very easy to find and self-help. But Katherine, the owner of the cabin, came to meet us three minutes after we arrived and provided us with a lot of help, such as how to use the equipment of the cabin. And tell us where the supermarket is near by. The kitchen in the cabin was well equipped and I cooked a delicious dinner for my friend. Katherine provides us with quite good yogurt, juice and bread for breakfast, which are kept in the refrigerator. The cabin was in a white birch forest. It rained heavily that night. Our room was on the second floor. Listen to the rain and sleep. If we come in when the birch leaves turn yellow, I think it will be more beautiful. If you come in in winter and it's snowy outside, I think it's beautiful. We had a wonderful night.Thank you for Katherine's cabin.

  • Staying here felt like being at home! The common area was so friendly and comfortable, and we met really nice travelers. The room was spacious, clean, quiet, and cozy. The home-cooked breakfast was a very pleasant surprise. Christy went out of her way to be welcoming and to provide us with information about the area. We enjoyed our stay very much.

    Karen2019-07-03T00:00:00Z
  • Christy was friendly and welcoming from the start. She seamlessly handled scheduling conflicts to our more-than-satisfaction. The B&B itself was comfortable and clean. The kitchen was stocked with all the essentials, and Christy made us a wonderful breakfast. I'd give this place 6 stars if I could.

  • We had a great stay here. Room is pretty small but worked great for my husband and I. Shared bathroom, but is clean. Best part of this stay was breakfast. We planned on leaving earlier than normal breakfast time, but Kate was very accommodating and sweet and woke up earlier to make us omelettes with fruit, water, coffee, and juice. It was delicious! Would highly recommend to anyone!

  • If you are ever in Alaska you must visit Kate. You will be astonished and amazed and you will love every moment you spend with her and her family. She is superb in everything she does and you will come away with a warm glow which will return every time you think of her. She deserves to be the best b&b anywhere.

    Philip2019-09-07T00:00:00Z
  • I loved staying at Kate’s place! It was very cute with lots of retro and artistic touches. My bed was super comfortable (better than mine at home!) and the room was cozy and cute. Breakfast was delicious! And Kate was an amazing host! Very sweet and responsive and gave me great tips on other places to visit in Alaska! I would stay here again in a heartbeat!

    Sylvia2019-09-06T00:00:00Z
  • Kate went above and beyond to make my daughter and me welcome. She facilitated introductions between us and the other guests. She gave us our choice of room. The bed was very comfortable (other than my daughter elbowing me in the face periodically). The bed was a double-size, where it appeared to maybe be a twin in the photo. The food at the café diner was *wonderful* and a real highlight.

Her responses were immediate and she went out of her way to make sure everyone in our group had found a place to stay. Since we were stranded and traveling with a group of students she even offered special pricing. The house and furnishings were welcoming and comfortable with thoughtful and generous touches everywhere.

  • We had booked the ladybug suite for the three of us and ended up two in the Baton Rouge bus and one inside the main house. I can not say enough about the charm of this place. Unique. The inside main house rooms were very comfortable. The bus got a bit cool at night...but my young adult kids said the ambience far outweighed any temperature issues. We would stay here again no hesitation. The breakfast was delightful. Dinner spots were a bit sparse. We ended up at the princess lodge.

  • Brandie's house is really Alaska Style. Dogs are very gentle. We love the place.

    Gu2019-07-03T00:00:00Z
  • Cozy and complete. Perfect for a short visit to Wrangle/St.Elias NP. Located at the midpoint to the two Park entrances.

    Ronald2019-06-28T00:00:00Z
  • We felt at home the moment we opened the door. Irish hospitality is world-famous, even in the fourth generation! Moreover Brandie is witty, and she has many stories to tell. The perfect Airbnb experience.

    Tine2019-06-24T00:00:00Z
  • Irish hospitality! We enjoyed every moment of it. And yet, to us this was the Alaska way of living: nature, wilderness, and freedom. Brandie is an amazing person!

    Tine2019-06-22T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay in this cozy little home was perfect! Just as Brandie described, it's a quaint little bush home in the woods off the highway. We found it easily and were greeted by two of the most cheerful mastiffs. Brandi was incredibly helpful in giving tips for exploring the area, and had some breakfast for us to grab and go in the morning. If you read the reviews and know what you're getting into, I'd highly recommend it!

    Jamie2019-06-19T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent place

    Jorge2019-06-08T00:00:00Z
  • Brandie is soo warm & affable! She is a wealth of local, as well as Alaskan tribal/historical knowledge. Through Brandies deep connection with Glennallen, along with her welcoming (yet not stuffy) presence we were able to really enjoy this cozy respite along our drive of the "loop" around central AK. This home is real, country, cozy, and feels like such a true genuine reflection of the persons living there. real deal all the way. I would recommend this lovely home as a place to stay to anyone who cares about a true local "real deal" experience. If you are more of a fancy hotel type this may not.be your place.

  • Kate’s place was great. We spent a night in one of the two buses and really enjoyed the experience. Our bus was really cosy and we loved the decoration. Kate offers definitively the best breakfast of Alaska, homemade, prepared with love and fresh ingredients. Our son, who is one year old, get his own breakfast. The service was outstanding.

    Brianne2019-05-26T00:00:00Z
  • What an absolute joy. Wonderful host, AMAZING bus and beautiful common areas, outstanding breakfast - we loved loved loved this place. The bed was incredibly comfortable and the flannel sheets were cozy even in the chilly night. Almost everything was perfect. Here are some areas that could be improved: A wall mirror would have been nice to have in the bus. I did my hair & makeup in the bus' rearview mirror! We were not able to use the heater and the lamp at the same time. When we used both, it would blow the breaker. We opted for the heater instead of the lights. The hot water in the shower was only like 5 minutes long. That was a bummer because it was a chilly night and I would have loved a hot shower to get toasty. Those are minor issues and would never sway me from staying again. Thank you Kate!

    Dana2018-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • Fun quirky space to sleep. So close to Wrangell St Elias and gourmet breakfast was amazing. Friendly staff and enjoyed stay. Be sure to bring mosquito spray, the bus doors dont shut completely tight. Wifi worked great in house but not outdoors where bus was.

  • We had an amazing stay at Kate’s place!!!! We tried to book the tipi but because of a recent rainstorm it was wet inside. Kate kindly allowed us to stay in her renovated bus “the Baton Rouge” for the same price and it was a wonderful experience. So unique and adorable. Amazingly comfortable & cozy! We absolutely loved it! The only downside was that the shared bathroom was a port-a-pottie & I really dislike those and I’m kind of a baby about using them. However without me mentioning it Kate invited us to use her house bathroom so that was lovely. Kate herself was the perfect hostess What a unique fascinating person!!! Talking with her was one of the highlights of my Alaska trip. As was sleeping in the bus. I highly recommend Kate’s place as a charming quirky comfy stop. She also provided complimentary Breakfast which was delicious & healthy! Sooo good! We will be back!

    Leslie2018-08-07T00:00:00Z

  • Mel and Jerry are the most outstanding hostess and host you’ll ever meet. It’s as though you’ve known them your whole life. They both make feel a part of their family. No guest is left out unless they want to be. Mel will knock on your door if your late for breakfast so that she knows that you have eaten. Now what hostess does that anymore? An extremely caring one named Melodye. I would suggest This place to anyone and everyone. They are JUST AWESOME

  • The best hospitality during my vacation in Alaska occurred at Gakona. I arrived late at night, but still got a few snacks, a game of darts, and virtual reality (!) in.

  • A true historic lodge. The hospitality was incredible and we all felt the Alaskan spirit from the Lodge crew. Cabin was rustic but very functional and true Alaskan experience. Check in was super easy and friendly and check out was just as easy. Dinner was delicious - they had bbq brisket and pulled pork sandwiches. The family gobbled it up. They also worked with me for my dinner with my gluten allergy which I truly appreciated. In the morning we had a nice, quiet and easy continental breakfast and again they went the extra mile and had gluten free bread out for me. Thank you again for a very nice experience.

  • Our stay at Louann’s Log cabin was wonderful, no negatives at all! It was very quiet and peaceful and we really enjoyed watching the pet rabbits play around the yard. We had everything we needed, the breakfast goodies were great too. The cabin was very clean. Would definitely stay again if the opportunity presents itself.

  • Great place to stay! Friendly hosts and lots of room to spread out!

    Danielle2017-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • Let me start out by saying these are some of the best hosts you could ask for. Friendly, extremely accommodating, and they go out of your way to make you feel at home. Great breakfast provided with fresh fruits and muffins and cereals. Very large house that accommodates large groups. Great place to stay if you're fishing Klutina or Gulkana rivers. 15 min ride to glenallen. Great rustic feel and look with all the amenities of home and then some.

  • This was a great place to stay! Copper Center is a bit in the middle of nowhere, so it was nice to find a good, clean place to stay. Luann was very helpful and friendly & we really enjoyed talking to both Luann and her husband during our stay. Would highly recommend!!
