Places to stay in Friendsville
Built in 1941 as Mountain Chevrolet Garage on the foundation of the former Confluence Hotel constructed in the late 1880s, our home is the perfect location for a night off the GAP trail or a day trip to Ohiopyle State Park or Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater (15 miles) and Kentucky Knob (13 miles). Second story apartment with river views that feels like a farmhouse and is situated on top of a warehouse. This guest room is one of two in our home. Managed by an artist couple.
This 1940s brick warehouse was a former autodealership and garage with two apartments above. The apartments were renovated into one 3200 sqft apartment in the 1990s by a previous owner. It feels like a farm house on top of a warehouse with picturesque views of the river, town, trees and mountains. The guest room is located in the west wing of this second story apartment facing the Casselman River, Sugarloaf Mountain, and the west side of Confluence. The full size mattress is on the medium firm/soft side. The Riverview Room is one of two guest rooms in the west wing that we have listed on AirBnB. The full bathroom in the apartment is shared with guests from the other room and is the main bathroom in our home. However, we do have our own bathroom located in the master suite. A half bath is located in the storefront, the room where we greet you on the street level. Please note: 1.) There is a 19-step staircase to access the apartment. 2.) We do not have central air conditioning. There are window and/or portable AC units in each bedroom. Room is equipped with clean sheets, hypoallergenic pillows (4) and comforter, ceiling fan, window air conditioning unit, white noise machine, extra blanket, kleenex, jar of filtered water and glasses, and ear plugs. Towels and washclothes are located in the shared bath. At the top of the stairs is a large sunroom -- perfect for relaxation, reading a book, eating a meal, savoring a cup of coffee or tea (provided). Other common areas include library, living room, kitchen, and dining room. We are a five minute bike ride (.8 of a mile) from the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) Trail in Confluence, 26 minutes (15 miles) by car to Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater and 23 minutes (13 miles) to his later home, Kentuck Knob. Whitewater rafting, fly fishing, hiking, biking, and skiing are all close by.
Confluence is a small rural mountain town in SW Somerset County, Pennsylvania at the confluence of the Youghiogheny and Casselman rivers and the Laurel Hill creek. We are located two blocks from the town square which features Confluence Cyclery, a locally-owned hardware store, post office, two banks, produce store, and gas station/restuarant. A grocery store is five blocks away. Other restuarants are located a little further out -- The River's Edge Cafe is six blocks away on the west side of town accessible via a foot/bike bridge over the Casselman -- and Lucky Dog Cafe (.8 of a mile) near the GAP trail off of 281. Trains run along Latrobe Ave through the day and night. And the Confluence Volunteer Fire Department is a block away.
  • I came to Confluence to get “off the grid”. To spend a couple days with my phone off; no ties to life, no obligations, and a bit of optimism to find a little peace with nature. I don’t know exactly what I was looking for, but I found a lot of it on this trip — due in no small part to this space and the people who run it. First things first, Pope and Suzanne are phenomenal hosts. Quick to communicate, and wholeheartedly committed to ensuring you have a good time. They’re transplants to the area themselves, so they know the ropes, they know their way around, and importantly, they know your perspective as a visitor. They estimated that 51% of their guests are in town for Fallingwater, and they’re deeply knowledgable about this, offering some great tips about other Frank Lloyd Wright interests in the area, as well as tips about some other parts of town I came to thoroughly enjoy. There was a lot to be said about serendipity on this trip — “the artist going off the grid” finding a space where the hosts happened to be true, lifetime artists, off the grid? Absolutely wild. Also, Giovanni, their dog, is remarkably adorable. A very good boy indeed. Second things second, the space itself! My lord! A 1940s car dealership converted to an arts space and a home. I might've paid admission to just take a tour, let alone to live there for a couple days. Pope and Suzanne encouraged me to play my acoustic guitar in the studio space — unbelievably, there’s no photo of this room on the listing (at the time of writing) — but it was a marvelous, open space that I’m grateful to have occupied. When the sun set over the river through the factory-style windows as I poorly played guitar lines unworthy of the space’s absolutely remarkable, natural acoustics… it was one of my favorite moments of my brief vacation. A note to musicians: maybe record a song here! The living areas that are meant to be shared are also truly first-rate, and I am similarly surprised there are no photos on the listing of these. The art hung on the walls is striking, and the furniture and decor are tastefully hip (I heard it’s been described similar to "quaint farmhouse meets New York loft”, which I’d hold very accurate). The bathroom was stocked with any and everything you might need, including handmade soaps from Oakland. Oh, and the kitchen? It was stocked as if the essentials were handpicked by gourmands -- everything from various oils (craft e.v.o.o. to sunflower), down to some very exceptional artisan, himalayan salt. When I saw this, I think I let out an audible “hot damn.” Not only is this an objectively perfect place to stay, you’re doing good by the community to stay here. Confluence (and the surrounding area) is bolstered by a significant amount of tourism income, and yet, there is very little arts space. By staying here, you’re helping fund a small business that seeks to inject the arts into Confluence, to provide residency programs, and also to establish an espresso shop and apothecary. But (most importantly, in my opinion), you’re helping to provide Confluence with a relevant gallery. When you stay at Tissue Farm, you’re helping the community — the local youth! — attain a local, relevant, and *accessible* arts space! It’s so important! This is one of the longer reviews I’ve typed out for an AirBnB, but without question, my stay at Tissue Farm was the best experience I’ve had on this platform. Whether you’re in the area for an outdoors excursion, or a few Frank Lloyd Wright tours, or just to get off the grid — it’d almost be foolish to stay anywhere else.

  • This was the first time I've stayed in an Air BNB and I didn't know what to expect. I knew it was a room in someone's home, and I knew the area that it was in, as I usually camp down the road. The price was more reasonable than most chain hotels I've stayed in nearby and the cleanliness was impeccable. There is character and charm in the Tissue Farm. The room was cozy and warm, eclectic art adorns the walls, organic soap and toiletries are provided in the bathroom, and a tasty breakfast of oatmeal with fresh pears and coffee was provided in the morning, and the hosts Suzanne and Pope were really cool and hospitable. They have a really cool vision of the future of the Tissue Farm which includes a coffee shop, art gallery, and maker space, as well as restoring a vintage RV trailer as another Air BNB room. I'm excited to stay at the Tissue Farm again on my next visit to the area!

  • What a great hospitality, they are amazing, they treat you as a friend. They have a beautiful history house. I am sure you love and will come back again. Great location, close to the gas station. The only thing the area doesn’t have service but they do have wfi.

  • Great place to stay. Would recommend a time like the spring when more businesses are open.

  • Great accommodation and Suzanne and Pope were great hosts

    Tom2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed our short stay at the Tissue Farm with Suzanne and Pope. The history of the property was enthusiastically shared, including a tour, by Pope. Suzanne and Pope were very welcoming and great conversationalists! The bed, sheets and pillows were very comfortable and the bathroom spotless. The steam heating, as warned, can be a bit load (a hissing noise) so the earplugs provided are appreciated. It’s a beautiful, windy drive to Fallingwater, one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpieces and was a great stop before our tour. We hope to visit again!

  • My husband and I used Airbnb for the first time. We weren’t sure but decided to give it a try. Wow, we were blown away! Everything was so seamless from booking to checkout. We were nestled away in the trees of our favorite resort. The condo was clean, decorated so nice & the upstairs bed was super comfy. It’s hard for us to get away from our busy family but I’m so glad we did & tried our luck on this Airbnb. You won’t be sorry!

  • We stayed at Shannon's place over a long weekend and had a wonderful experience. The loft itself was very clean and stylish. The fireplace was a great touch, since we stayed in winter. The location is really convenient to the resort amenities, parks, restaurants, and the wonderful wilderness of the Laurel Highlands. Check in was easy and communication was fantastic. We'll definitely be back and can't recommend Shannon's loft enough!

  • Shannon’s place was amazing. Very clean and they were so quick to respond with anything we needed. It was right on Nemacolin property so we could walk all over the area and to all the different attractions if we wanted to. The wood burning fireplace was perfect for a cozy winter evening. Would highly recommend staying here if given the opportunity!

  • Accommodating and comfortable. From request to check-in, and beyond, the communication was great. The condo has everything you’d want for a few days away or a long stay.

  • Tissue Farm is an interesting and inspiring destination. The rooms are situated in a cosy apartment above a developing art space - perfect for artists and travellers. The room was clean and cozy with a *very* comfortable bed and lovely linens. There is a very cute shared kitchen and dining area. Suzanne and Pope are attentive and thoughtful hosts. They're available for whatever is needed (whether great coffee in the morning or local history and tips) but they also give guests plenty of privacy. We loved our stay and will definitely be back!

    Kate2020-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • Suzanne and Pope were awesome! They were amazing hosts and had a really awesome space! I would go back to Confluence just to go back to Tissue Farm.

    Madeline2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • This place is amazing! The house is just perfect with a wonderful view and plénty of space! Suzanne and his husband are extremly welcoming and they are very fascinating people as well. Their house is perfectly located to visit The Water Fall House, but Confluence and the sourroundings worth the visit! Highly recommended !

    Giovanna2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • Suzanne and Pope were great hosts! They had coffee with us in the morning and treated us to a tour of the building -- It really has quite the history. They had great recommendations for things to do and places to eat in the area! The room was very comfortable, and had everything we needed. There are freight trains that run regularly near the building. The noise didn't bother us, but just in case you're a lighter sleeper, Suzanne and Pope provide earplugs and a white noise/sound machine in the room. I would absolutely stay here again.

  • Super-friendly hosts with clean, comfortable space in a totally unique building. Easy walk into down for food options; good breakfast place almost next door!

    Nathan2019-10-26T00:00:00Z
  • While the space absolutley met our expectations in terms of location, hospitality, and cleanliness , what really got us was the artfulness, unique space and attention to the smaller details - highly recommend! P.S. great morning coffee!
