Places to stay in Essex
The apartment is private and in a separate wing of a converted factory complex which includes an owner occupied building and artist studio. We gladly welcome well behaved pets.
The apartment is modern and open yet charming with 1975 sq. ft. of living space. It is the home of the former Erickson-Davis Gallery, retaining some artworks by the host and her husband. It's a great space for entertaining but events must be booked in advance with an additional fee. There is also a large office area in case you might consider bringing your work with you.
Ivoryton is a small hamlet in the Village of Essex located in the Connecticut River Valley, a few miles off I-95, halfway between NYC and Boston. Essex is renowned for its quaint New England Main Street and vibrant boating scene. Essex Main Street is two miles away. There's also a vast system of hiking trails in the area. The Ivoryton Playhouse, The Connecticut River Museum and The Essex Steam Train are just some of the local attractions along with many fine dining establishments.
  • Eccentric and unique and large space! Lots of room for everyone. Around every corner there’s another space to check out with artwork galore. Location is perfect with restaurants, bars, and bakeries within walking distance along with beaches and CT River a short drive away. Highly recommend Pam’s Airbnb.

  • Spent the weekend and it was such a cool space! Pam left us coffee, creamer and cookies as well as english muffins and jam in the fridge. The floors are cement so Pam has a basket of slippers on the heater for cold toes! Super comfy bed and lovely shower as well. Lots of fluffy towels, extra blankets and everything you need. The locations is really close to downtown Essex and all the sights and close to markets/grocery as well. Thanks for sharing your space with us, Pam! We had a lovely visit.

    Luca2020-02-01T00:00:00Z
  • Candice and Adam are probably my favorite ever hosts. They were so kind and friendly from start to finish of our stay and were super cool. They renovated this property on their own and should win an award for all of the little and big touches that they have put in. It’s gorgeous. So unique and fun to stay in such a historic home. They were beyond welcoming and the room was beautiful. Very comfortable and decorated with such finesse. Essex is also such a lovely little town...we loved it. Candice has her own shop including organic natural products...one of which we purchased and it did exactly what she said it would. They also recommended a restaurant that we loved in Chester. I’m so glad we stayed. I’d recommend staying year round. An experience we won’t soon forget. Thank you so much, Adam and Candice. Hope to come back soon!

    Jackie2019-11-09T00:00:00Z
  • Candice and Adam’s place is charming and excellently located for downtown Essex. I’d absolutely recommend staying with them.

    Wendy2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • This is what an Airbnb experience should always be -- quick responses, a warm welcome, a stylish stay, perfect little touches. Candice & Adam were flexible with my ever-changing arrival time, there were just-out-of-the-oven chocolate chip cookies in their gorgeous kitchen as I walked in, and the room was just as advertised -- beautifully appointed, really stylish and spacious bedroom with organic linens on a really comfy bed, and the beautiful bathroom had all the perfect little touches... antique fennel toothpaste anyone?! They gave me some great recommendations as to where to have dinner and then where to explore the next day, and upon departure, I stopped in to their little shop where again, everything was adorable and hip and chic. Thank you, Candice & Adam, and adorable Cash too (!) and I wish you all the best with your new house! **P.S. Candice used to own a bakery and her cookies were the BEST I ever had!!

    Leah2019-10-18T00:00:00Z
  • This is a charming location, the hosts are incredibly friendly, the rooms are clean, and comfortable. This historic venue is worth staying at!

    Seth2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • It's going to smell so good every time you walk into a room! The mattress quality far exceeded any airbnb I've stayed in before which was an unexpected delight. Everyone is right in their raves about the treats. If Candice is around, expect to be spoiled!

    Caitlin2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • An incredibly unique experience. The house is outstanding, and the hospitality was totally 5 star. Candice and Adam are such kind, helpful and down to earth people. I ran out of dry shampoo and Candice whipped up some for me in 5 minutes before going to a wedding. My boyfriend and I were walking to the Gris when Adam drove by and offered us a ride. They give you snacks and coffee, and they have the cutest dog. Best Airbnb I have ever been to!

    Philip2019-12-03T00:00:00Z
  • Jean’s home is full of treasures that delight the eye. The beds are comfy and it was easy to relax after visiting my daughter at school in New London. The town of Essex is charming.

    Donna2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • This is a charming, welcoming and delightful little house in a great location. Jean, the host, is accessible and helpful! I loved every minute of being there and felt so at home. This is a great option if you would like a true New England experience.

    Robin2019-09-28T00:00:00Z
  • Jean’s is such a unique place in a lovely part of the world. I would highly recommend!!

    Conor2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • Jean's cottage was lovely and very clean. She was very helpful leaving us cute notes around the rooms and also a quick communicator!

    Michael2019-08-18T00:00:00Z
  • EVERYTHING was sincere, gracious, and thoughtful. Opening the blue door and walking through the threshold, immediately felt a soulful hug and welcome. Notes with places to go, a free book to reflect upon later in the day, the spotless dwelling, the amazing decor that made us want to sit inside and discuss rather than explore town. Jean is everything you want in a host, and makes me want to be a host in the future...well done!!! We had an amazing time Essex all in all

    Edward2019-07-27T00:00:00Z
  • Jean was an excellent host. She was fast with her responses to my questions and made our check-in process very easy. The Cottage is just as described. It's super cozy and felt just like home. The kitchen was well stocked for cooking and Jean even left us eggs, coffee, and muffins for breakfast! For well-behaved children, it's a perfect spot because of the playground right across the street. However, the house is full of neat knick knacks and art that could be very appealing/breakable to curious young hands. Jean was great about moving some of the more breakable things up higher so as not to tempt our 3 y/o! Overall, a fantastic home, in a great little town. We enjoyed walking in Essex for ice cream at Sweet P's and visiting the docks. Essex was an easy drive to the aquarium in Mystic... a must see! We would definitely recommend Jean's cottage.

Essex is just as close with whaling ship homes and the CT River Museum or the Essex Steam Train. So many itineraries abound, we can help you pull together a few lovely days. Close to entry/exit I-95 and Route 9. Within twenty minute drive to major shoreline attractions and colleges: marinas and shore front (3min); Essex Steam Train and the Ct River Museum (5 min); Lyme Art Academy, Old Lyme Inn, Bee and Thistle Inn, and Florence Griswold Museum (5min); Ivoryton Playhouse and Norma Terris Theater (10min); Mystic Seaport, Mystic Village and Mystic Aquarium (25min); Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera House (25min); Connecticut College, US Coast Guard Academy, UConn Avery Point
Family land on which I grew up and have so many wonderful memories of nature filled exploratory days. Quiet except for a few roosters, turkeys and the occasional fox. A retreat for rejuvenating or a central location for other activities. Near many weddings venues, river activities, train and highway access. The neighborhood is spread out and quiet. It provides the best backdrop for relaxing after a long day at the beach or sightseeing. It also is very attractive to the outdoor athlete or enthusiast. Biking through Otter Cove is a joy for families or singles alike, plenty of bird life and woods to explore, with Turtle Creek Sanctuary just down the road. Even with all the rural quiet comes ease of access to both highways and Amtrak to facilitate exploring all the Ct shoreline has to offer.
  • This was our second time staying with Victor and Sondra. They are very helpful, welcoming, and have a lovely/clean space. They were flexible with us on check in time and welcomed us to stay later if we wanted. We are officially making this our go to spot to stay in Old Saybrook.

  • The absolute perfect in town apartment. I can't think of a better place to stay.

    Trish2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • I didn't know Chester before I stayed at Lori's, so I was happy to see the full kitchen available. Little did I know I wouldn't need it! It was a delight to walk out downstairs and in next door for breakfast at Simon's every morning. I didn't even wear my coat. Retreating back up to the front room over the street was perfect for reading without feeling isolated. Lovely space, ideally located.

    Matthew2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • We wanted to celebrate my birthday at Grano Arso in Chester without having to drive home after eating and drinking. Lori’s place was absolutely perfect for us. Great location, walk to town & only steps to the Connecticut River. Great for train aficionados- you can watch and photograph the famous Essex steam train in action. This historic factory built in 1874 has manufactured sails, metal objects and lastly Lace. Enjoy your private comfortable apartment with river views and deck.
This private apartment overlooks the Connecticut River, Essex steam train and Becky Thatcher Riverboat. It is part of an old factory. You have your own private entrance and deck.
Our neighborhood is awesome, the river is right across the street we get to see everybody because they walk their dogs down here. There is a park across the street -you might be lucky enough to be there on a concert night. You can walk into town it's less than a mile away. This building is an event venue. We are three seasons and do weddings from April to November. Weekends would not be available as we have weddings and your space doubles as the bridal suite!!!
  • Really nice space! Will return to Andrea's whenever we are back in the area!

    Michael2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Andrea’s apartment is incredibly spacious, very well appointed and in a lovely quiet spot with beautiful views overlooking the Connecticut River. We enjoyed three nights here and it provided a great base to explore in all directions. Communication with the host was excellent and we would definitely recommend this space to others.

  • The place was cozy and perfect. And that view was amazing! The entire property was very beautiful and I would to love stay again.

    Olyvia2019-12-19T00:00:00Z
  • The place was everything Andrea said it would be and more. The location is spot on for a great little get away at any season. You're not far away from town yet Andrea's place is off the beaten path. It reminded me of a little get away to the New England country side. The old steam train and the local ferry dock area right outside your front door added a picturesque charm to Andrea's place. My 11 year old daughter and I plan to visit again in the near future. Andrea is an amazingly accommodating host. She went out of her way to make our stay the absolute best getaway ever. We recommend you check out the little gem in CT if you can. It'll be worth it and then some.

    T2019-12-08T00:00:00Z
  • Great place. Staying there during the holidays is fantastic because you're right next to a stop for Santa's village / Polar express from the Essex stream train. Nice private apartment and easy check in and out.

Adorable 1800 cottage with views of the CT River. Upstairs bedroom with a king. Bathroom with a tub and a tiny kitchen. Other room is used as an office but has a queen pull out bed. Watch the Essex steam train, Becky Thatcher riverboat, or hang out at the river, bring your kayaks or paddleboards as there is a boat ramp right across the street.
This cute cottage was built in 1800. It is across the street from the Connecticut River and provides you with a plethora of fun things to do if you like to paddle! The area is great for just walks or hanging out and relaxing or discovering small New England towns.

  • The cottage is a cozy riverside getaway, with a location handy to local towns and great restaurants.

    Janine2020-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • This was such a cute place! The quiet seclusion was just what I needed for this trip. The bed was very comfortable and the room was cozy. The bathroom was a little small, I found myself ducking out of fear, I'm 5'9, but it was fine. I liked the antique feel to the kitchen utensils.

    Ricky2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Quaint cottage right across the street from a beautiful river. I saw an amazing sunrise and a beautiful full moon over the water. I appreciated the fresh eggs! Spent some time at the Nest coffee shop which was cozy and tasty. A good place to stay for some quiet introspection.

    Julie2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • What a beautiful location! Looking out the kitchen sink window you have a view of the river. Cottage is located on a quiet street. Close to Deep River’s downtown. We enjoyed our stay.

  • I love this cottage, and the area around it. If you’re wanting a space that’s relaxing and yet close to things to do, stay here! Andrea took care of making my stay as easy as walking into my own home. And enjoy the local restaurants, too, especially The Nest coffee house!

Cute ranch house. Just redone. Great spot to hang out and enjoy the Connecticut River. You can walk to town, the river, hike in the woods. Enjoy our gardens and chickens. Walk to Sunday Brunch at The Lace Factory.
    Nice space to relax.
The spot is perfect for kayakers, you can walk and put your boat in right at the river only a couple of houses away.
  • Andrea was an incredible host! My family and I came to CT last minute for a death in our family and we were in search of a quick rental that was close to family. She got back to us right away, let us rent for the same day, was so so accommodating, and let us check in early. I can’t thank her for her hospitality enough, especially during a very tough time for my family. The place had everything we needed and more and was just the coziest house. Can’t recommend staying here enough! The location is amazing & the host is a gem.

  • Andrea was a great host. We appreciated being able to stay in the cozy little house. Loved walking down to the river landing which was decorated with Christmas lights, etc. Thank you.

    Constance2019-12-26T00:00:00Z
  • Andrea's place is "as advertised" The quiet location so close to the Connecticut river is fantastic. The house is well-furnished and the kitchen is supplied with everything we needed for our two week stay. Andrea was respective of our privacy while also being very responsive to our needs. Unsolicited, she arranged for our walkway and driveway to be shoveled and scraped following an ice storm, which was greatly appreciated! We will definitely check on the availability of Andrea's place when planning future visits to the area.

    Steven2019-12-17T00:00:00Z
  • I loved being in this pretty little home! The Sun room was an extra plus! The house had everything I needed, with a two minute walk to the CT River.

This thoughtfully designed and smartly decorated 2 bed, 1 bath unit is the perfect blend of style and comfort. The space has been completely re-designed and renovated, featuring a brand new modern kitchen, soaking tub for your relaxation pleasure and cozy wood-burning fireplace for those chilly nights. The unit also features a rear deck that overlooks our mature maple trees and sprawling front porch complete with his and hers rockers. Great for 1-2 couples, small families or group of friends!
What sets this space apart from the rest is it's size, added amenities and location. The space boasts nearly 1,200 square feet of living space, contains a large, well-appointed kitchen (to cook real meals!) and a full-size washer/dryer. It's walking distance to Chester Town Center and minutes to the highway, yet is set on a heavily wooded lot that allows for privacy. It's perfect for a weekend getaway, but also great for a weekly summer rental or a longer-term stay. Traveling nurses, actors, actresses and directors welcome! Ask for more details and weekly/monthly rates. The rental space is the front portion of our house and there is a second unit in the rear where my husband and I live. The two spaces share a (soundproofed) wall and there are two sets of doors that separate the units that remain locked at all times. The unit is accessed via a keypad code system and instructions are provided upon booking. Small pets considered, additional deposit required. Message for details.
Chester is one of Connecticut's best kept secrets. It's quaint, tiny town atmosphere gives it a remote village feel- yet it's location toward the middle of the state means its only minutes from the Shoreline and has easy access to major highways. Sick of the hustle and bustle of the City? Chester is 2 hours from New York and Boston. Come stay, relax and sloooow down. Stroll the small shops in the Town Center or dine at any one of the local restaurants (no fast food or chains around here!)-- and then finish the day by catching a show at one of the three theaters within a 5 mile radius. Here in the summertime? Chester has one of the best Farmer's market in the state. Here at Christmas time and have kids? Check out the Essex Steam Train, which runs dinner service all year along with many other seasonal excursions, but transforms to the Polar Express making trips to see Santa from mid November through December. Need ideas? We are always happy to help-- or check out our comprehensive house manual and area guide. There is always something to do.
  • Probably the best airbnb we have stayed at, and certainly the best in Chester. Gorgeous. Beautiful setting. Perfect for my wife, myself, my 5 year old daughter, and our nanny.

  • You will totally love your stay at Bridget's home. It is so comfortable and enjoyable. T he area is very quaint...lots of restaurants and cute shops in the town. Not far from Essex which is also a very nice town to walk around. Took a ride to Gillette Castle. For those of you who like to walk, there are lots of state parks, beaches and trails to choose from. You won't be disappointed. The house is very well equipt and super clean. Newly renovated and beautiful.

    Bonnie2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • We loved staying at Bridget and Ryan's place. The place was super clean and had many homey touches. We did a lot of cooking and the kitchen was well stocked with spices, oil, coffee, tea, sugar, etc. We would definitely recommend!

  • What a great way to renovate a carriage house! It both looks and feels great! We loved talking to the ponies. We loved all the sightseeing and restaurant suggestions. We loved all of the little personal touches such as the great bag of coffee beans! We will be coming back for sure Thank you!

    Leslie2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing views and the sweetest ponies!! Check in was so easy and the place was huge especially for the price. I felt so safe too. Location is definitely higher end and kid friendly. Carol was so kind too and was there for anything. Will 100 % be returning in the future!!

    Jared2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at Carol’s carriage home for our friend’s wedding nearby. There were six of us (three couples) and each of us enjoyed our stay very much. The place is spacious, clean, and comfortable. The coffee Carol provided and the coffee maker there were amazing. I would highly recommend this place for anyone.

    Ching2019-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • The pictures made Carol's place look amazing so our expectations were high, but I'm delighted to report that reality exceeded our expectations. The property is spacious, private, and well kept. The carriage house has been tastefully and intelligently renovated with quality materials, no cob job to throw something on Airbnb. The place is absolutely immaculate and has all the comforts (and necessities) of home including a laundry room! The bedroom suite downstairs with the dual bunks is huge and just plain fun. It's great for adults but if you're traveling with kids they'll think you booked the place just for them! The upstairs bedroom is also spacious and quite comfy. We had the whole family there (6 adults, 2 children, 1 infant) so 2 of us also slept on the incredibly comfortable sofas. We prepared all of our meals in the well equipped kitchen, the dining room table is large, and the living room is huge too. There are 3 AC units but our weekend was pleasant enough to just open the numerous windows and use the AC minimally. There's a little back deck, a nice back yard for the kids to run in, and the horses not only like to be fed but are quite friendly and love to be visited. The crowning touch is Carol. She is not only responsive but warm. Not putting-on-the-hostess-persona warm, but genuinely friendly. Clearly she enjoys this and the people that visit her property. I truly feel that I not only have a place for my family to stay when we visit the area now, but that I have a friend Lyme. If you're looking for an amazing place to stay in this area, I have no hesitation recommending that you look no further.

    Mike2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great, serene spot! Very clean and comfortable. Carol’s coffee is also outstanding. Highly recommend!

  • We had an amazing stay. Doree's place was immaculate and very cozy. Plus, we got to meet one of her dogs – which is always a bonus! We would definitely consider staying there again in the future.

    Matt2019-08-29T00:00:00Z
  • A cheerful space with attention to detail. Obvious pride of place and ownership from the moment you walk through the door. Having the parking right next to the door and undercover of carport was nice.

    Georgia2019-08-23T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay was above and beyond what was expected. Doree is a fabulous host! We had great amenities accompanied by friendly interaction, local tips, and the occasional push on their giant swing!

    Jordan2019-08-01T00:00:00Z
  • The Nest is sparkling clean and SO comfortable. We were there on a work trip, and The Nest was the perfect place to unwind and relax. Doree supplied our little getaway with everything we would need to feel right at home. I also loved the location and the feel of coming home after each workday. I wish we were still there!

    Barbara2019-07-18T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed our stay at The Nest! Such a cute space- had all we needed. Super clean and decorated with a nice touch. The muffins, coffee and cream provided was much appreciated. Doree left tips on local food, bars, and events/ in neighboring towns. We ended up exploring Chester, CT on a sunday and loved the farmers market that was mentioned. Got some local honey, cheese, and bread to enjoy. Awesome little staycation retreat.

    Lauren2019-07-07T00:00:00Z
  • The place is so beautiful and clean. Loved how everything was decorated. There were muffins, a birthday cupcake and champagne for when we arrived which was soo thoughtful. We loved that there were games in the closet as well, helped add to our peaceful getaway. Everything was so close as well. So we went out to the shops which was 10 mins away and also the beach as well as explored some local places as well. I highly recommend this place to anyone. Its definitely somewhere my husband and I will return to!

    Stephanie2019-07-02T00:00:00Z
  • Doree's place was the perfect spot for me to stay! She is a wonderful host who has made a truly comfortable "nest" for visitors to land. She goes above and beyond to make your stay pleasant. It is tastefully decorated, and clean. In fact, most of the furnishings look brand new. There is a room air conditioner, but with the ceiling fan alone I was quite comfortable on this late June visit.

  • A very unique home. Artistic preservation of so many pieces. Clean sunny and warm. We had a great family Thanksgiving here.

  • Absolutely one of the best Airbnb’s of the many we’ve stayed in. The house is a work of art. When inside, it feels secluded and cozy - but it’s just steps from the fantastic restaurants of the Main Street. We’re already planning our next visit.

    James2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • Funky and fun. Full of rustic charm. Loved the proximity to town, but most of all the lovely setting and sounds of the waterfall. Our new favorite place to stay in the CT river valley! Highly recommend!

    Elise2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • This house is 100% worth a visit. The house is very comfortable and relaxing, with an upper and lower floor to give groups traveling together some privacy. The special upcycled touches throughout the house make it a pleasure to explore, and the outdoor seating areas with waterfall views and sounds is like being at a spa. As an added bonus the town of Chester is 1/2 a block walk away and has great restaurants, shops, and stores with really friendly folks. I look forward to visiting again.

  • House was amazing and would definitely stay there again!!!

    Chris2019-07-21T00:00:00Z
  • This is a must stay! This house is a surprise in every room. It’s unique, interesting, rustic, and peaceful. Each level offers a different kind of stay. If you’re seeking a private retreat the downstairs is the place to be with an easy access to the amazing yard in the back with chairs overlooking the waterfall. We often used the main level to cook and play games on the deck. Upstairs offers amazing views of the waterfall as well as the yard. The town of Chester is small, a nice getaway from the noisy city. There’s a Sunday market throughout the summer months, which our neighbors told us about. The neighbors are super friendly too! All around we had an amazing stay and plan on coming back in the future.

    Heather2019-07-18T00:00:00Z
  • This place is amazing. Words and pictures cannot describe or capture this amazing house. Amazing location. The village of Chester is cute and welcoming. The Sunday farmers market was great little event. Andre was a great host as well. This is a must on your "places-to-visit" list.

  • Doree has created a cozy and welcoming place to stay in a lovely neighborhood that makes it feel like you're coming home at the end of the day. Both the Nook and the Nest - I've had the pleasure of staying at both - are well appointed, comfortable, and sparkling clean. The hosts are lovely and go out of their way, even giving this stranded Alabama girl a ride to work when it snowed.

  • A calm and elegant space without being fussy. You sense the presence of an artist with a delightful eye for quality and functional design. The yard and patio in summer I am sure will be a refuge with its floating white curtains and view of the gardens.

  • Candice & Adam's place is beautiful! A really thoughtful updating of a historic home. We had everything we needed in our room and bathroom. Plenty of blankets, a space heater, bathroom amenities and more. Our room faced the street but we barely heard any traffic. We were in a great location for exploring Essex. The shared bathroom wasn't an issue and we were able to juggle it with the other guests. The home was clean, calm, and smelled great! Candice & Adam were very kind hosts and were communicative about check-in and provided local recommendations. Thanks for our stay!

Stunning recently renovated 3 story cape on 7+ acres and 2000+ square ft. Open kitchen to living room area with a giant island to gather members of your group together to eat, drink, laugh and have a great time. Cook inside with a fully equipped kitchen, pots, and pans, silverware, spices, everything you would want to prep a great meal as well as a propane grill on the deck. Get the incredible experience of staying in one of New Englands hidden gems, the small town of Lyme. Extremely peaceful and private. 3 large bedrooms, and a kitchen to die for!! Great for having a group together around the giant kitchen island or take it outside to the deck space during CT summer. Never disappointed.
Peaceful neighbor hood. People out walking and riding bikes all over. The next door neighbor open a vineyard on his property last year. Local farmers markets within walking distance a few times a year.
  • Adam's house is absolutely amazing. This was our second time staying with him and it was just as wonderful as before. His house is beautfully decorated and sparkling clean. I would so recommend staying there!

  • Adams place was the perfect place for our family over the holiday. The layout worked for large gatherings in the kitchen with an open floor plan. Master on the first floor and a huge deck. Supplies were ample and communication was great. The location was super convenient to the highway and also grocery and other stores. Would highly recommend!

Second floor cozy guest room with a queen size bed, large closet, skylight and private bathroom with a clawfoot tub, no shower, just one door down the hall. Our home was once a horse stable which we converted but maintains its historic charm.
When you arrive at our house there is plenty of parking in the driveway.
The village of Ivoryton is within walking distance. There are several restaurants and the historic Ivoryton Playhouse is wonderful. Just down the street is the lovely Copper Beech Inn with gourmet dining. The Essex Steam Train has daily excursions along the CT River. Downtown Essex has many shops and the famous Griswold Inn just up from the harbor. The closest place to rent a car is in Old Saybrook. The closest train station is in Old Saybrook and has Amtrak & The Shorline East which connects to Metro North. The closest airport is Bradley International.
  • Leslie and Cottie are outstanding hosts! Their place is exactly as pictured in a converted stable and they've kept neat touches from the stable throughout the house. Their house is also a little set back from the road but they do a great job coordinating with you about it so you can find it easily. They welcomed me with open arms, we read the paper together in the morning, they had tasty breakfast options available, and were happy to be as involved or hands-off as worked best for my trip. The guest bed is extremely comfortable and quiet, so you get a good sleep, and they know the area well so they can give you good tips about where to go and what to do. If I'm in Ivoryton/Centerville/Essex again, I will definitely stay here!

  • What a great Airbnb and within a couple of blocks of the lovely local theater where we attended the show "Cabaret". Leslie and her husband Cotty (hope I spelled his name right) greeted us on arrival and were so warm and inviting. Their home is immaculate and the bedroom was so comfortable. The next morning, Leslie served us a wonderful breakfast of fresh fruits, homemade blueberry muffins, juice and coffee. Don't hesitate to stay here. you won't regret it

    Carolyn2018-10-07T00:00:00Z
  • Leslie's house is stunning! So clean and tidy and the garden is beautiful. We were attending a wedding in the locality and Leslie kindly let our friends get ready in our room even though they were not guests! She made us breakfast and spent time chatting with us and gave us a tour of her garden. We didn't get much time to explore but would love to return. The house is near nice shops and restaurants and a local farmer's market. We would definitely recommend Leslie's home and hope to return

It probably says somewhere in the description, but I missed it that the bathroom is currently shared by three guest bedrooms. • I absolutely loved staying at Candace and Adam’s place! I was looking for a peaceful place to finish an overdue manuscript, and I found it in their beautiful, well-appointed home. I am an Airbnb host myself, so my standards are very high. Their gorgeous kitchen, organic snacks, breakfast-to-go items, and tea and coffee service made me rethink my own hosting practices and up my game! A highlight of my stay was meeting Candice and Adam themselves: they are warm, friendly, unassuming, and very respectful of their guests’ privacy. I will be back!

  • This is an amazing house. The home is nearly 300 years old, and has been restored to a "like new" state. The owner has painstakingly made sure to preserve the historic details that make a house like this so unique. You will find details such as wide plank pine flooring, period woodwork, and fireplaces throughout the house. The room itself is excellent. Comfortable bed, private attached bathroom, and a serviceable closet. The host is incredibly hospitable and warm. We would definitely stay here again.

  • Susan was a wonderful host! Lovely home & location. When visiting Old Saybrook again I’ll happily stay at Susan’s!

    Anastasia2018-09-03T00:00:00Z
  • Susan’s 1737 historic home in Old Saybrook was an absolute DREAM. Not only was the house incredible and the accommodations lovely, Susan was an absolutely delightful host and provided great conversation including some very interesting history on the home. One of our favorite touches was the fan that she included in the room- it was so nice to have the cool breeze & white noise. Altogether, we can’t recommend Susan’s home enough and we are looking forward to our next visit!

    Kalahan2018-08-26T00:00:00Z
  • We were in town for a wedding at the Saybrook Point Inn & Spa and found Susan's place to be a convenient and economical choice to stay. The house and room accommodations were clean and tasteful. Susan was a gracious hostess, offering us delicious home made iced tea upon arrival and a ride to our vehicle if we needed it. We stayed in a first floor room that was spacious and clean. I would have liked the option to lock our bedroom door when we were not there but perhaps this is the standard and I am just not a seasoned Airbnb user. I highly recommend Susan's place and would absolutely stay there again.

    Dawn2018-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • Susan is a genuine host. She clearly loves hosting and it shines through in her greeting and all the little thoughtful gestures. The house is a museum and she has amazing stories for each intricate part. So cool! The rooms are airy and well appointed. The beds are crazy comfortable. If it’s available and you care, I would highly recommend upgrading to the upstairs bedroom where you have a deck and a view of the harbor from your pillow. Just saying.

    Jennifer2018-08-08T00:00:00Z

Welcome home! Since I first fell in love with my house back in 2015, it has been my purpose to make it a place where all my guests felt comfortable, welcomed, and relaxed. I have created many memories with friends and family and I hope you find here the comfort, peace or convenience you are looking for on your family visit, business, or personal trip.
Your space consist of a private bedroom with a queen size bed on the second floor, and the adjacent, semi private den. Even though it overlooks the kitchen, the den is visually private for you, and the layout of the house allows auditory privacy as well. The den itself has a sturdy comfortable sleeper sofa, with a queen size air mattress. Therefore the space can be shared by a couple sharing the bedroom, two people sleeping in separate spaces, or a couple and a third party (additional fees for additional persons apply).
This community has plenty of amenities- easy access a wide variety of fine dining, casual joints with great food and friendly people, two seasonal theater companies, museums, a rich history, river and stem train tours, dozens of antiques stores and so much more. This progressive community welcomes and embraces everyone who has an appreciation for the good life, whomever you are.

  • SUCH an incredible and unique space! Extremely well appointed home, including a fully outfitted kitchen capable of cooking for a solid crowd! The fireplace was charming, the living room comfortable and relaxing, the outside patio simply stunning! All four bedrooms were very well appointed, with comfortable mattresses/pillows/sheets, and both full bathrooms upstairs were perfect. Even the water was impeccable (felt great to shower in, tasted incredible)! HIGHLY recommend this space!

    Travis2019-11-30T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed here for my Niece’s wedding at Water’s Edge. We wanted a place to be able to accommodate a large group with the ability to cook, enjoy the area and have a small post wedding gathering. The house is stunning, the grounds are breathtaking and the amenities fabulous. The care that Laurence takes with every detail is bar none. The home is very large but very charming. You feel like you are in a Villa in Europe. I would most certainly recommend it and we will be back. Laurence thank you for your hospitality.

    Lisa2019-10-21T00:00:00Z
  • The villa was everything we hoped for and more. As one of our friends said, if you didn't leave the grounds, you would swear you were in Italy. We knew it was going to be a beautiful building, but were weren't expecting all the personal touches that made it so much more than just a pretty house. Some of the more tangible touches include, but definitely were not limited to: -The cozy dog bed and pet bowls and a snack for our dog -A selection of gourmet snacks for the humans, perfect after a long drive -The fireplace all prepped and ready to go -Chilled water in the fridge -Coffee and tea -French soap in the bathrooms -Plush , soft towels and luxurious bedding Laurence was a wonderful host. She met us the first evening when we arrived and gave us a run down on the home and the nearby village of Chester. She suggested local activities that we might enjoy and made sure we had everything we needed. She was very responsive and helpful whenever we had questions and her warm, friendly demeanor really made us feel at home. We stayed at the villa in mid-October and the foliage all around was splendid. We spent many hours sitting on the veranda sipping wine and playing board games, surrounded by the brilliant colors of fall, and in the mornings I walked the grounds with my dog and my tea, enjoying the peaceful tranquility. The villa was exactly what we were looking for -- a respite from the craziness of every day life, a chance to slow down and reconnect with family and friends, and a place to to pause, take a deep breath and just enjoy the moment. Downtown Chester was everything Laurence said it would be, and then some. Only a 10-15 minute walk to lovely boutiques, a fun Octoberfest celebration, delicious restaurants, and even an amazing farmer's market on Sunday morning. The locals are friendly and inviting and very welcoming. And dog friendly! Nearly every store and restaurant had dog bowls set out in front with fresh water, and there's even a doggie cafe. The wine/liquor store had a great selection of wines (and an adorable French bulldog) , and we quickly became regulars. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the pièce de résistance, a private dining experience at home with our very own personal chef. Laurence not only set us up with a talented local chef, but she worked with him to guarantee a delicious meal that we will remember and speak of for years to come. I could go on and on, (and have, for days now!) and I still couldn't do it justice. Suffice it to say our stay at Villa Bella Vista was a 5 star experience for accommodations, atmosphere, personal touches, and hosting. Thank you Laurence and Christopher. We will definitely be back. -Nancy D - October 2019

    Nancy2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • This place is the whole package. Great value, outstanding accommodations, personal thoughtful touches, great location, I could go on. The weather was beautiful in early September, so keeping the windows open and letting the breeze fill the house did us just right. It honestly feels like a gift to stay in such an enchanting place full of history in the middle of one of the most charming towns I've ever been to. I hope it will not be my last experience staying at Villa Bella. Laurence, the lovely lady caring for the home, was easy to communicate with and so helpful. Your expectations will be exceeded.
