  • Beautiful, romantic, relaxing place! Totally worth it! I went there with my wife and we loved it. The host was amazing!

  • We arrived and the house was hard to miss, it's even more spectacular than in the pictures. October in Connecticut is full of incredible colours and the view you have from the living room seems a painting. Greg helped us to feel at home and the place did the rest. Memorable.

  • What a wonderful find! Peaceful modern design in the woods, a true jewel. It was super hot weather but the AC kept us as cool as the decor. The bathroom is stunning. And the bed is large and comfy. Perfect place for getting away from the world without having to drive for hour and hours off the highway. Christine left us water , a wonderful coffee maker and coffees, and some local baked goods that were delicious.

  • We loved our 3 night stay in this relaxing haven of quiet, surrounded by nature. Our hosts were absolutely friendly and very discreet. We were warmly welcomed upon our arrival, and then left to enjoy our stay as we chose. For us it was the perfect balance of freedom, discretion, privacy and hospitality. The house is perched on a rise overlooking a beautifully maintained landscape that falls down and away leaving one feeling private and nestled among the tall trees. We had our own driveway, and parked next to the house. As described, the house is: modern, light-filled, tastefully and simply furnished, totally clean and functional. The king-sized bed is wonderful. We slept beautifully. The coffee left for us was delicious. It was a pleasure to open the doors wide in the morning and drink coffee looking out over the beautiful landscape, and watch the hummingbirds come and go from their feeder. We also enjoyed quiet morning walks down to a small bay, and appreciated the beauty of this part of the Connecticut shore, so typically New England: the stone walls, the trees changing into autumn colors, the marshlands, bays and inlets and wildlife. We loved our visit and will definitely come again.

  • The listing was extremely accurate. The house was pristine and beautiful and the landscape was lovely. We're local so we're familiar with the area, but the hosts did a great job of pointing out options for dining and activities.

  • Beautiful home. Very close to town and Christine was wonderful. We loved our stay and would definitely return!

    Brooke & Jeff 2014-09-11T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely lovely space, just as described and presented. Hosts were engaging and warm, and respectful of our space. My only desire was a couch. They said it is forthcoming, and I believe them. I've already talked this place up to five other friends.

    Benjamin2015-06-22T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely stay at this beautiful guest house with a wonderful host! The spotless, cozy, and well designed guest house is in a great location on a beautiful property . It was a treat to stay in this neat modern cottage for the night and Christine was a pleasure to deal with.

The apartment is beautiful and fully furnished in the historic District of East Haddam close to Rt 9 or 2, the Goodspeed Opera House, River House and CT Shoreline. Gillettes Castle, Fox Hopyard, Devils Hopyard, & more. Just 20 minutes to Middletown and wonderful dining.
Located on the second level of a Victorian home in the Greek revival portion is the Federal suite. It offers a foyer leading to a covered front porch, the bedroom replete with period details such as plaster cast crown moldings and medallion, a marble coal fireplace used in a bygone era that imparts a touch of elegance of the time. They certainly did not have king size beds with pillow top mattresses and linens with such refinement as we are offering. The main living area offers cathedral ceilings, exposed beams as this room is in yet another era of historic construction & architecture. A full kitchen is offered along with a full bath room where one could choose to bathe in the Antique clawfoot tub or take showering you prefer. A spiral (helical if you wish total accuracy) staircase leads to a loft yoga or meditation area. A perfect place to do your own brand of exercise, paint, and be creative.
I love the ability to grab a quick walk down a cul-de-sac adjacent to the property or longer loop around Ballek's farm and back. There are countless walking trails and open space preserves to walk and discover with wonderful flora and fauna. Nesting bald eagles are a huge attraction and I love seeing the elusive pileated woodpecker on my walks at Gillette Castle or Machimoodus State parks. Golfers have their choice of two courses within town borders and many more if ok within a 20 minute drive. There are of course several restaurants in down but our favorite nearest is Rustica just south and over the charming swing bridge. It's truly authentic Tuscan food at moderate prices in nice atmosphere. Of course Middletown is our go to destination when one wants a plethora of culinary choices to satisfy your cravings. There's plenty of places to drop a boat in and fish or do whatever else floats your boat. East Haddam is the eighth largest town in the state of Connecticut in area at 54 mi.². It offers miles of rural scenic driving. You are under 25 minutes to either the Connecticut shoreline or Middletown. By the way... I'm a licensed REALTOR and if you're here to find a home we are the perfect match!
  • Our 3rd stay here with another coming up. It's a great area and the house is beautiful and comfortable,

  • I was here for 30 days during a relocation and it was a great spot, private, artfully decorated, spacious (even a yoga loft!), and enough kitchen equipment to make meals. Mick was always responsive and helpful, I would definitely go back! Sandy March 2017

  • Great place. Mick was attentive without being intrusive. I would stay here again.

  • We loved our weekend away in this beautiful suite. As the pictures suggest, the space is bright and spacious - we enjoyed the vaulted ceilings in the living room, and the yoga loft! We would definitely return.

  • Enjoyed our visit. Comfy and nicely appointed apartment.

    Ella2017-04-04T00:00:00Z
  • We loved staying at this charming house! The apartment is very Zen and beautifully decorated with the Host's photography and art collection, which makes the space feel personal and welcoming. The yoga loft is perfect for the yogi looking to keep their practice while on vacation and a nice little meditation space. The king size bed is super comfy and the water in the shower is nice and hot! If you are looking for a relaxing getaway in East Haddam (a lovely little town), this is it!

  • This was such a wonderful relaxing place to stay. We got to watch the birds in the morning while having coffee. It was a fantastic spot to be in to check out the local wineries and do some hiking. The apartment had everything we could have needed and was the perfect simplistic awesome spot to stay.

    kimberly2017-02-05T00:00:00Z
  • They gave us a quick tour of the place and made sure we knew where stuff was, how to connect to wifi, etc. There's a smart TV there with Netflix and HBO Go, which was a nice bonus. We only stayed for one night, but wouldn't have minded being there a little longer!

The yurt is located at the Sanctuary, a beautiful 40 acre community land trust with meadows, forests and trails, beaver ponds, a community garden and small farm. It is one of the greenest (sustainable, carbon-neutral) places to stay, close to many local attractions, family- and pet-friendly, with a deeply peaceful ambiance. The Sanctuary non-profit is located on the land trust and offers educational resources for personal transformation, community development and environmental restoration.
The Sanctuary is a beautiful place made possible by a beautiful idea: a piece of land which cannot be owned, for profit or destruction, but is held "in trust" by a community non-profit organization, The Sanctuary at Shepardfields. This is sacred land, being developed as a blessed community possession, using permacultural, nonviolent, ecologically-regenerative practices and technologies to generate ecological and social system coherence, i.e. Love. Harmony is the goal and the means. The harmony of this beautiful space is immediately felt, and by being here you become a part of this process of unfolding wholeness.
The Sanctuary is located in East Haddam CT which is one of the largest towns in Connecticut, and the town with the most land under conservation easement. It has a rural feel but with a lot of cool local culture and thriving sense of community, growing ever more diverse.
  • We loved the Yurt. It was very clean. The host was helpful and friendly. Location was super!! Birds and wind through the trees was so restorative. We were visited by the goat who was adorable and the cat who was sweet and friendly. We were well entertained by the chickens. Trystin is twelve. He is still talking about what a great experience he had!! It is rustic. When traveling with children consider taking sleeping bags.

    Susan2017-07-10T00:00:00Z
  • Although it is near the end of the season, Jen provided blankets and space heaters and the yurt was plenty warm. If you are looking for a luxury type place, continue looking but if you want a peaceful, comfortable place to stay, this is it. Highlights for us were the cats, dogs and Maxine, the goat, as well as a delicious breakfast with great conversation with Jen and Justin.

    Barry2017-10-28T00:00:00Z
  • Sanctuary is an absolute amazing place to be. Secluded yet only minutes from historic east Haddam and Connecticut river. It was so peaceful staying here. Great place for an escape. I will absolutely be coming back.

    Adam2017-08-04T00:00:00Z
  • These are good and interesting people, stewards of a land trust sanctuary. I stayed in the yurt, which is on the rustic side but very comfortable. It is a very large space.

    Joe2016-10-30T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed Jen and Justin's place! The yurt is super spacious and offers a very different AirBnB experience. Their property is beautiful, very peaceful, animals are super friendly and a delight to be around. This was a perfect getaway from the city. Thank you!

    Charlotte2017-07-04T00:00:00Z
  • Fabulous place, fabulous hosts!! Arrive and enjoy a tour - settle in and walk the grounds. This is a place for people who like rustic - in other words campers and simplicity. Saying that, I loved the rustic nature of the yurt. - bed really comfy - watch the beavers perform at dawn (URL HIDDEN) - enjoy philosophy chats with the hosts over b-fast - DEFINITELY do the hour's hike around Lake Cockaponset (Jen will direct) and swim in the warm lake (I did a skinny!) - play the djembe! - meditate on the huge yoga stage - eat a tomato from the garden (sooo good) - get a trapeze lesson from Jen! (URL HIDDEN) - write in a journal daily! Loved it all ... thank you thank you. Paula

  • This very unique spot falls somewhere between rustic and roughing it. My wife, who can do "glamping" wasn't very happy but my son, who is 2 years old and loves animals and nature and meeting new friendly people absolutely loved this place and still asks if we can go back. The hosts are very nice, very kind, and thoughtful. The Yurt feels like a genuine Mongolian nomadic dwelling. The breakfast was out of sight. Our host Justin, made it to order with fresh eggs and fruit and veggies, steel cut oatmeal and terrific bread. We went in late May and the nights were still pretty chilly. Luckily the hosts thought of that and provided us with a couple extra space heaters. Recommend it for travelers with a sprig for adventure.

    Pierre-Marc2017-05-30T00:00:00Z
  • Jen and Justin are excellent hosts. They communicated quite well with us , answered our questions, and met our various needs. The yurt and the entire place are quite special, quiet and peaceful, in the middle of an outstanding natural environment, where the vibe is friendly, balanced, and welcoming. If you would enjoy being in a very quiet, comfortable, and unique environment, I highly recommend staying here.

Tranquil, mini-castle, with rural character. Close to village of East Haddam, near the Connecticut River. Private suite with access to kitchen. Friendly, frail, older German Shepard/Husky mix. We are a working, family-farm with 50 head of beef cattle. Come enjoy a hay ride! We've started our hay-making season.
The bathroom has an ADA height toilet and a walk-in shower. We want to age in place and welcome others that are otherwise-abled.
Great hiking and biking. Quiet. Dirt road.
  • A lovely, pastoral and quiet setting. Very nice and attentive hosts.

  • Victoria's gorgeous home was such a weekend treat. East Haddam was a wonderful little town with great walks and sites. We did a lot in the short time we had, and were in love with the spacious room/bathroom and Vicky and Frank's hospitality. I'd highly recommend :)

    Bryan2017-09-24T00:00:00Z
  • Vicky and Frank are super friendly! We enjoyed chatting with them both. Great home which is quiet and relaxing. Absolutely loved the mini tour that only a local can provide and the farm experience!

    Corina2017-10-16T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely stay at Vickie's and Frank's place. The room was simple, clean, and filled with interesting artwork. The bathroom was connected to the bedroom which made our stay feel private and comfortable. It was very spacious for the two of us. Vickie and Frank made some coffee in the morning and offered to show us around their farm, which was a short ride away. It was great to see a working farm with cows roaming freely. We'd definitely stay here again next time we're in town!

  • Do you want a quiet unique location only 8 minutes from the Goodspeed Opera house in East Haddam then give Vitoria's Place a look the hosts are terrific, we felt right at home.

    Jeffrey2017-07-23T00:00:00Z
  • My friend and I stayed at Vicki and Frank's home for one brief night on our weekend trip. We checked in just a little past 9pm and left around 7am the next morning. Vicki showed us thru the private space where we would sleep and shower, in addition to offering to wake us up in the morning to ensure we reached our ferry in time. The space was clean and comfortable; the mattress leans to the firm side. The bedroom was also located on a separate floor from that of the hosts, giving adequate privacy and a decent noise barrier. We were able to wake up to the sounds of the birds chirping at sunrise, which was lovely considering we are from urban areas. The marble bathroom is the real winner for this stay--we were impressed. Before leaving, we had a nice conversation with Vicky and Frank about our trip, were offered coffee and fruit for breakfast, and signed the guestbook. It was a very simple and easy overnight stay with kind, personable hosts. In short, we would recommend this bnb to others.

The factory, located at the site of the now empty Rossi lumberyard, was powered by water from the reservoir and Candlewood Hill and Bible Rock Brooks. The factory burned in the early 20th century but the dam and reservoir remained until its 2003 reconstruction as Higganum Reservoir State Park. • This is a family house located in a beautiful garden and surroundings.

  • Take the time to stay at this incredible bit of history. Your host, Clarke, is so personable and offers coffee and fruit every morning in the parlor. If you have a chance, check out the back gardens and the vintage tree swings. The beds and bath are very comfortable and the Wi-Fi works great. Your just off the main routes and a few miles from Haddam, Chester and Essex, with a grocery store and small restaurants nearby.

    Cindy2017-10-16T00:00:00Z
  • Clark was very fast in his responses and Keot in touch with us through out our stay. He has a lovely home and we enjoyed our time there! He also has a sweet cat. His rates were very good... Much lower than other houses in the area. The town is lovely with nice restaurants and walking trails.

    Kristen2015-04-27T00:00:00Z
  • Our host, Clark, was supremely kind. We arrived late and he was right there when we pulled up after a long drive cross country. The place is a historical gem and is clark's family home, so he knows the history and the town. Wished we had more time to enjoy. We had to leave early the next morning so could not enjoy having breakfast with our host which he had so graciously asked us the night before about. The historical nature of the home makes it a unique listing, but I would say that some attention would be needed on one item before I would feel totally ready to stay again. In one of the rooms, the ceiling needs extensive repair and Clark mentioned mold. That could really be a hazard. Clark did mention in passing that he had forgotten we were coming, but our beds were made and mattresses were comfy with new feather pillows, warm quilts. Stay made pleasant because of the host and history, but I think a few updates and fixes would make this a phenomenal stay.

    Leslie2015-09-24T00:00:00Z
  • Clark and his wife are great hosts! We really enjoyed our visit to this historic house in rural CT. It was the perfect fall getaway from the bustling city life for my friends and Clark and his wife were very hospitable to make sure our stay was very comfortable. They gave us suggestions on fun things to do in the area and the next morning we were served a delicious continental breakfast. The house itself has a lot of history and character to it which you will enjoy. Would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to get away in a quiet peaceful town!

    Khadija2014-10-26T00:00:00Z
  • We only could stay 1 night at Clark's Mansion. It's a very special place full of history of his own family. If you are looking for something not standard, than go to Higganum! The rooms are spacious (as the whole house is) and clean. Unfortunately we didn't have time to explore more and stay longer. But I can recommend this place for your holidays...

    Hans2016-06-09T00:00:00Z
  • We had a very nice stay at this Historic Villa and are glad we stayed here. The hosts gave us plenty of privacy and it was very roomy. We had a full bedroom with a full bathroom down the hall. Downstairs we could lounge in the living room where a light breakfast was served. Since they only rent to one party at a time this helps feel like you have the place to yourself and you are provided plenty of room to hang out. This is located in a very quiet neighborhood in a quaint small town. The only problem is that we were gone every day so we did not make use of enjoying the property or take any walks on it. The hosts were very generous. The light breakfast was a perfect continental breakfast, we enjoyed the cheese and jam that was served the most. The hosts were also accommodating when we asked for more blankets because the weather was a little cool for the end of May. I would not consider this upscale lodging but it was very adequate and serves as an airbnb lodging very well. This was the first time we used airbnb and are glad we had this option.

    Peter2014-06-03T00:00:00Z
  • Such a great experience. House was absolutely gorgeous in a picturesque neighborhood. Clark and his wife were warm and welcoming. We will be returning to this place as soon as possible.

Relax in our quaint cozy cottage nestled into our farm of 150 animals. Visit with our animals, enjoy a show at the nearby Goodspeed Opera House, hike the trails of Devils Hopyard State Park or tour Gillette Castle just to name a few. Cabin features ground level efficiency, private entrance/parking, quiet, peaceful, 2 bedrooms, TV, kitchen w/microwave, coffeemaker (we provide coffee, tea and condiments etc.).
  • There could not have been a more perfect place to take my friend to celebrate her upcoming marriage. The cottage was more spacious in person than in the pictures - plenty of room for four of us. It was easy for us to relax and enjoy a fire from the wood burning stove, and the beds were extremely comfortable. Bonnie was easy to communicate with and was very accommodating. She left some oatmeal, English muffins, fresh eggs, coffee and tea for breakfast. We loved walking the farm that surrounds the cottage. Three of us grew up in CT, but had never visited East Haddam. We all fell in love with this quaint town and Ray of Light Farm. We cannot wait to visit again in the future. Thank you to Bonnie and all the animals for hosting us!

    Jess2017-04-23T00:00:00Z
  • Bonnie's place was in a convenient location to explore this beautiful part of Connecticut and worked very well for our family of four. It's close to the Goodspeed Opera House, Gillette Castle and the Chester Ferry. We enjoyed seeing the animals from the kitchen window in the morning.

    Karen2017-08-19T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely location. Exactly as described.

    Sasha2017-05-28T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at Ray of Light Farm was amazing! It's an animal sanctuary with the noble mission of taking care of castaway animals, and staying here supports this important cause. Plus getting to spend time petting the beautiful llamas, alpacas, mules, donkeys, guinea pigs and rabbits is a great bonus! :) Furthermore, the pictures don't do the accommodations justice. You get a cute stand-alone two bedroom cabin with a fully-stocked kitchen, a yard, lots of clean towels and linens, and everything else to feel at home. Bonnie and Damory were extra hospitable and generous hosts. This is a fantastic Airbnb for animal lovers, people needing to escape NYC for a weekend, or parents! Also the nearby town of East Haddam is very cute and has some good restaurants, check out the Gelston House for a dinner with views of the Connecticut River, as well as The Devils Hopyard, a nearby state park with stunning waterfalls. Thanks again!

    Ronnie 2017-04-17T00:00:00Z
  • Very nice place to stay, clean comfortable. Bonnie is a great hostess. The cottage located on the animal rescue farm, a good place to visit and very educational. Greta place for families and kids events.

    Elena2017-06-18T00:00:00Z
  • Bonnie's cottage was perfect. It was charming, clean, and absolutely lovely to wake up in the middle of the beautiful and lively farm.

    Julia2017-10-15T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great cabin that is right in the middle of grazing areas for many different animals. You open your curtains and see a sheep, or a beautiful horse. It is quiet except for the noises the animals make, and the location is easy to get to from major highways. You can take horseback riding lessons in the farm or just walk around and pet the animals. It was absolutely lovely! The cottage was clean and cozy and the staff on the farm were extremely polite. If you're an amateur star gazer - you'll also enjoy this place! The WiFi is not too reliable so don't expect to do a lot of browsing on your computer, but the staff is aware of this and are planning to improve it in the future. My friends and I were looking for a cozy getaway from our busy city-filled lives and this was the perfect thing.

    Anna2016-12-28T00:00:00Z
  • My 5 year old daughter and I spent one night at Annie's Place, on our 9 day road trip across New England. Even though we never had an opportunity to meet Bonnie in person, communication via text was great! She had made arrangements for my daughter to have a pony ride upon arrival, and I was extremely impressed by the friendliness of the staff that we interacted with. We enjoyed exploring the farm, and meeting all of the animals. The cottage was clean and cozy, and we found it easy to make ourselves at home. We both had fantastic sleeps on the comfy beds, and enjoyed waking up to the sounds of the animals outside. We appreciated the selection of snacks, beverages and breakfast foods that were available. Should we ever find ourselves back in CT, I would stay at Annie's Place in a heartbeat!

This 1859 Colonial house is located on the Connecticut river in the quaint town of East Haddam. Sunlight and cool breezes in the summer, and watch acres of trees change color along the river in fall. In the winter, wood-burning and propane stoves make the sitting rooms cozy. Enjoy theatre at Goodspeed Opera House, farmers markets, restaurants, and shopping in Essex and Chester, boating on the river, and hikes on the home's 1.3 acres or nearby Matchimoodis, Hurd, and other state parks.
The home has original details throughout, including wide-plank wood floors, original glass in the windows, a dutch door in the kitchen leading out to a brick terrace, and traditional paint colors from the mid-1800's. Furnished with a mixture of modern and antique pieces that make it feel comfortable and clean. The views from almost every window are breathtaking - the wide Connecticut River to the front, and old-growth trees and limestone walls stretching up in the back to the cliffs above. Dishes, cookware, and silver are a combination of new and antique, with a blender, french press, full refrigerator, water heater, and other appliances. In the sitting room you will find art books and games, and the living room has a modern oversized chaise lounge that can be used for sleeping if there are more guests than the bedrooms can accommodate. In case of power outage, there is a propane generator on the property that starts up immediately to avoid disruptions in power.
The home is located in the historic district of East Haddam, CT, enabling guests to enjoy the serenity of the woods and the river while also being able to walk to the village of East Haddam. Along the way, you will pass gorgeous colonial-era homes, the local library, a cemetery established in the early 1700s, the Nathan Hale Schoolhouse, and amenities like Common Ground cafe, the Sweet Shop, the Gelston House restaurant, and the Goodspeed Opera House. A quick trip down highway 9 brings you to the villages of Essex and Chester, which are known for their boutiques, restaurants, antique shops, and other amenities. Along with boating and hiking (and cross-country skiing in winter), the house provides easy access to swimming at the Moodus reservoir and Cedar Lake, and visits to Gillette Castle. East Haddam is located 20 minutes north of Old Saybrook and other shore towns, where there is public access to ocean beaches. 20 minutes to the north is Middletown and Wesleyan University.

Knowles Landing: This quiet River oasis was once a destination for vacationers to get out of the City back during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many would travel by steamboat to the Landing where there was a steamboat house for tickets and baggage (the steamboat house burned down before the property was purchased, but the foundation still remains in front of the dock). Shipbuilding History: Situated atop a commanding hill, this landmark Victorian was built in 1886 by the daughter and son-in-law of local steamboat Captain Edward W. Simpson. Middle Haddam was home to more than a dozen sea captains – some credited with capturing British ships off Long Island during the Revolutionary War. Trade to the West Indies is documented as far back as the 1770s. The local taverns, shops and inns, which were later converted to lovely homes and a local library, enjoyed financial success until the early 1930s when steamboat service died out along the Connecticut River. The Connecticut River: The Connecticut River has been named one of the “Last Great Places” by the Nature Conservancy. One of the most beautiful rivers in the world, it has no industrialization along its shores and its waters are rated clean enough for anything but drinking. It is a summer breeding ground for osprey and the largest concentration of wintering eagles on the East coast when it is a common sight to see eagles flying above the River in search of food. The Neighborhood: Walk to the Middle Haddam Library, just up the street with a wonderful collection of books, DVDs and historical references, or take a stroll down Shad Row past the waterfalls and onto Shipyard Road. The Middle Haddam Post Office is also an easy 10-minute walk over a wooden bridge off of Blacksmith Road. Nearby: Stop & Shop and other stores are just 2 miles away up RT 66E. Less than a mile away is the best takeout pizza in the area. Great hiking at the 130-acre Hurd State Park is just 2.2 miles south off of 151, or travel east on 66 and follow the signs to the East Hampton Air Line State Park trailhead – a great path that extends 22 miles to Windham. Local Entertainment, Theatre & Art: Mohegan Sun Casino is an easy 32-mile drive, and the award-winning Goodspeed Opera House is 9.5 miles off of Route 151 (Fiddler on the Roof is playing from 6/27-9/7. Be sure to visit nearby Chester with wonderful one-of-a-kind shops, fantastic restaurants, the Norma Terris Theatre and Connecticut’s acclaimed contemporary impressionist artist Leif Nilsson’s Studio – all less than 15 miles away. Destinations: Gillette’s Castle and State Park are just 13 miles south in East Haddam. The visitor’s center and tour provides an exceptional view into William Gillette’s inspiring life as an inventor, playwright and actor. In neighboring Portland, check out the Brownstone Exploration & Discovery Park – an outdoor adventure sports park with rock climbing, swimming, kayaking, snorkeling, cliff jumping, scuba diving and much more! Kayakers: For the sports-minded adventurers, you might enjoy paddling down the CT River to the wonderful Blue Oar Restaurant (we can arrange to pick you and the kayaks up at the Blue Oar). Outside waterfront casual dining with a Caribbean flair. It’s BYOB, open 7 days a week through Labor Day for lunch and dinner. You want to plan to paddle down with the current going out. Depending on wind, current, paddle speed and rest stops, it will take you 2 to 3 hours. Golfers: Less than 6 miles away is the public 18-hole regulation Portland Golf Course set in the rolling hills of the Connecticut River Valley. Challenging and enjoyable for players of all ages – excellent turf conditions, restaurant, pro shop and friendly staff. Food Lovers: Across the River, Middletown boasts 133 restaurants from sushi and Thai to Italian and Mexican. Plan to go to O’Rourke’s Diner, for a special breakfast treat; just over the Middletown-Portland Bridge on the left – get there before 8:30 to avoid the line out the door on weekends. Local Vineyard: Priam Vineyards in Colchester, just 10.5 miles from Knowles Landing, offers tours and wine tastings March thru December. Concerts are scheduled every Friday night ($12/ticket). Wesleyan University Center for the Arts: Check out Wesleyan's calendar for wonderful concerts, film and dance programs just 8 miles away!
  • Our family loved Knowles Landing! It was perfect for our 3 generation family vacation. Sue bent over backwards to respond quickly, do research on dining options, provide destination activity ideas, and was available to answer any questions we had about the house and property. We would recommend Sue and her beautiful estate to anyone with a family!

  • We stayed at Knowles Landing with extended family for a long weekend to celebrate a graduation from a nearby university. We thought renting a house would be more enjoyable than staying in a hotel and dining out for every meal. I'm happy to report we made a great decision! The house and property and views are gorgeous. The rooms (loved the sleeping porch and living room) are bright, uncluttered and furnished with simple, beautiful pieces. There are plenty of bathrooms (the black & white one has wonderful period style). The kitchen is fully stocked with dishes, glassware, utensils, pots, pans, and anything you might need. Check the fridge and pantry before heading to the supermarket; you might find unused/unopened food left behind by previous visitors (Sue makes sure everything is fresh). We played badminton and horseshoes, and used the kayaks. We also sat by the river and lounged on the veranda, and wished we had more time for everything. There's a detailed "how to" book that explains everything about the house but if you have questions, just call or text Sue. She lives up the hill and is always willing to help. We loved our long weekend at Knowles Landing and we think you'll love it, too.

  • Wow. Words can't even describe what an amazing weekend I had spent with my friends at know lea landing. It was absolutely amazing. The hosue exceeded my expectations. It was spacious, beautiful and had such a cozy atmosphere. Sue was so welcoming and assured us if we need anything she was there for us. I would definitely want to return !

  • This is a beautiful home in a stunning location and we give it the highest recommendation. We had great fun using the kayak's and discovering the local wildlife; we tried our hand at fishing too with rods provided by Sue. There are games to play on the lawn and court too. The house and grounds are really well kept and very spacious. It really is a gem of a location. Sue is an impeccable host - the house is equipped with everything you need and can think of, and more. Communication was great and we were greeted and shown all the amenities. Sue also generously harvested a squash from her crop (which tasted amazing by the way) as well as allowing us freedom to help ourselves to freshly grown tomatoes and herbs from the garden. Come to this wonderful place if you wish to relax, wind down, spend precious time with loved ones, enjoy some peace and tranquility, have amazing views of the river and relish in all the joy it has to offer. Thank you Sue - we loved our stay xx

  • This was our first AirB&B rental and it was a great experience! Sue was very accommodating in her review of the house and offers to provide information about the area. Extra touches such as flowers and fresh ground coffee were greatly appreciated. The house was better than advertised. It is well equipped and extremely comfortable. It is beautifully decorated and has everything you need for a vacation getaway. It was a perfect location to celebrate my husband's birthday. The views are amazing. The location is perfect, close to restaurants and sites, although we rarely left the house. We enjoyed the peace and quiet of the location, the great kitchen and comfortable furnishings. This is a great find and we definitely plan on returning.

  • Beautiful property and Sue was super helpful. She shoveled the driveway when it snowed even before we woke up! Great host.

    Matthew2015-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • Sue greeted the 8 of us warmly, even though we were an hour late arriving. She walked us through the whole house, showing us the unique characters of the rooms and appliances. We loved the house, the space, the doc and river. It was absolutely perfect for our reunion. Thank you for making our trip so special.

The Protz family first constructed this home in rural Connecticut after fleeing the forward march of German troops during the Second World War. Convinced that the war would soon be coming to America, Mr. Protz constructed his home to act as a sort of fortress - In today's terms we wouldn't hesitate to call him a "prepper". You'll stay in the family's lower level, which before being converted to an in-law apartment served as the family's air raid shelter.
The home is located alongside a scenic Christmas tree farm and is walking distance from the local winery. The apartment is a single level with no thresholds making for easy walking. Two bedrooms (queen & twin) are available in addition to pull-out sectional. A large dining space, full kitchen, and spacious living room are perfect for relaxing. Everything within the apartment is available for visitor to use, including fridge, stove, kitchen appliances and utensils, washer & dryer, TV. No cable or wifi available.
Scenic area set back off of Route 82. Located directly across the street from a working farm, with rolling acres of apple, peach, and plum orchard surrounding the home.
  • Awesome place that was nice, homey, and perfect for a quick getaway. I always enjoy the quiet CT countryside, and next time my friend wants to bring a tent to sleep under the stars! Also great for those that want to be just off the grid, and only minutes from Goodspeed Opera House.

  • Great stay in East Haddam. The town was very very rural, but everyone was incredibly nice. My friends and I went to the two local restaurants there and were met with kindness. In addition, Kevin was awesome and he gave us farm fresh eggs.

  • This spot is a little remote but a beautiful setting. The place was spacious and exactly as represented. Kevin was very helpful, quick to respond and very flexible about checking in and out. It was a very good value.

    Barbara2017-05-28T00:00:00Z
  • Kevin's place was great - a simple spacious apartment at a very reasonable price. It's in a very pretty part of Connecticut and the place is a great base to see the surrounding area. The beds are comfortable and all the basics are provided. You have your privacy here. Kevin is very nice - he got us set up and gave us his phone number in case we had any problems or questions (but we had none - everything was perfect for us).

  • Charming and friendly people, friendly pets (two cats and a dog) a spotless home, set in the woods, a very positive experience. It was exactly what we needed. I would say that we were treated like family, but my real family is not so nice as our hosts were, nor my cat as friendly.

  • Not just a beautiful location but a wonderful spirit all about the place, serene and energizing at once. Tracey is intelligent, articulate and highly organized, as well as a gifted musician and photographer, which makes interacting with him a real pleasure on many levels.

  • Tracey was a great host- upon arriving he made sure we knew where everything was and welcomed us to use all the backyard area, which included a fire pit and a labyrinth of trails throughout the backyard. The room was kept very clean and was so cozy and peaceful. This was the perfect place to stay for a quiet retreat. Thanks again Tracey for the great place to stay!

  • Among the many Airbnb's I've stayed in, this one was an extraordinary find. It's a great place for a romantic getaway or solitary retreat. Tracey is a gracious host and a gifted healer who went out of his way to ensure that my stay was comfortable. I'll definitely stay there again.

    Marcella2017-06-23T00:00:00Z
  • "If I could save time in a bottle The first thing that I'd like to do Is to save every day till eternity passes away Just to spend them with you" It was hard finding the right words to capture the joy this little spot has brought me (and I use the word little loosely because this place is huge). It took hours of looking at places to find the right one that fit my basic requirement of hiking trails and a lake however once I saw this listing without hesitation I booked it. This place is anything but basic. Literally 3 minute drive to the lake/Beach and less than 10 minute drive to town. Stunning views all around, acres of land to be explored and if it's peace you're looking for you've found it here a few steps away is a meditation bench, there's a hammock at your disposal and a deck where you can get lost in a good book. But why waste a trip hiding behind a book when there so much more to see and do. I mean come on look at the pictures this place is stunning. It is was a pleasure meeting Tracey and it is certainly a pleasure to say how wonderful our stay was at this secluded nature preserve. It turned out to be exactly as depicted on the website. Tracey was a wonderful host. Greeting us the moment we arrived. Tracey was a warm and generous host. He was thoughtful enough to assure us we would have fans and water in the mini fridge waiting for us upon arrival. We picked a weekend where temperatures were up to what felt like 100 degrees. But hey it was my birthday weekend. That didn't deter us from enjoying ourselves. Tracey was filled with questions and answers making it feel as if we were staying with friends instead of crashing in someone's house. He was full of information and funny stories regarding the house, town and people who live there. Though he was around the property we never felt crowded. His presence and casual conversation were always welcomed. It was nice sitting down with him on the deck our first night there sharing pizza and talking about the stars. Tracey was attentive enough where you didn't feel shy about asking him more questions and at the same token he provided you with enough space to enjoy your surroundings in peace. The pictures only highlights a glimpse of the beauty and tranquility it holds. Part of me just wants to keep it all to myself, My private oasis. But who am I to deprive someone of such beauty. So if you're looking for a home away from home. if you're looking for a place with as much charm and grace as it's host then look no further. This is it My only regret is that we didn't stay longer. Thank you Tracey, until we meet again. All the best, Indira

  • Tracey was very warm and friendly. When I arrived he was there to greet me and gave me a tour of the space. The room was cozy and warm. The bed was incredibly comfortable. There was also a private sitting room available to me that had a great view of the woods. The bathroom was big and had all the amenities I required. My intention was to spend a couple of nights away from home to just sit and meditate and enjoy nature. Tracey's space was perfect for this. Chester is only about 45 minutes from my home. It is nice to know that I don't have to travel far to get a similar experience to places like Omega or Kripalu. Tracey was the ultimate host...friendly, good conversation and good tea.

  • What an incredibly cozy and wonderful cottage! It was just the rejuvenating weekend I was looking for. Maryan was one of the most responsive, caring, and pleasant hosts I have experienced. Highly recommend to anyone considering staying in the area. Can't wait to return =)

Our house is fully renovated, with 80ft of lake front. The house faces East, with stunning sunrises. Downstairs there is a well equipped kitchen, sitting room with wood-burning stove, and dining room for 8, and half-bath. There is a large porch facing the lake, with a sitting area, and dining table for 8. The master suite and bathroom is downstairs, with king-size bed and Smart TV. Upstairs there are 3 queen bedrooms, 2 with Smart TVs. All bedrooms have lake views and ample closet space.
Outside, we have a coal BBQ, firepit, a dock that extends into the lake and an outside shower. You are able to rent kayaks, boats and slides from the Happy Paddler which is very close to the house. The house is at the end of a quiet lane, with 80ft of lake frontage and dock. The lake permits water sports, but is very safe and quiet, and welcoming for kayakers and swimming. Well behaved house-trained dogs are welcome, although we would prefer them not to be upstairs, as the 3 bedrooms upstairs are carpeted.
East Hampton is a small village, with a charming downtown area, as well as many amenities and shops. There are public tennis courts less than 5 minutes walk away, a lake front park with enclosed swimming area with lifeguard seasonally and small play ground for younger children. The lake permits water spots, but is still quiet and peaceful for kayakers and swimmers.

  • Great house on a peaceful lake. Highly recommended.

    Linda2017-10-09T00:00:00Z
  • This home was great!! It's amazing waking up and seeing the lake. All the neighbors are so friendly. My two sisters and I went away for a long weekend with some of our cousins and it was just the perfect setting! The house itself was clean and beautiful. Everything is updated and well decorated! All of us agreed that the sun porch off the back of the house was the best room, just sitting out there drinking coffee in the morning and relaxing at night was absolutely amazing! Thank you Vanessa for helping us have such a perfect girls trip!

    Nikki2017-07-10T00:00:00Z
  • The house was well depicted in the pictures. The best part of the house by far is the screened in porch which runs the width of the house and looks out onto the lake. The bedrooms were a good size and the kitchen had all the necessary items in it. Our dog loved swimming in the lake! She was very prompt with communication and the location of the house is great. It is a quiet street but with Stop and Shop right down the road incase you forget anything. We would definitely stay again!

    John2017-08-07T00:00:00Z
  • Vanessa's lakehouse was beautifully decorated, clean, scenic, and spacious. We enjoyed the outdoor patio and deck leading right to the lake. The rooms were spacious and each had a great lake view. Check in and check out were easy and Vanessa was responsive throughout the weekend for any questions we had. Would definitely return again!

    Sneha2017-03-26T00:00:00Z
  • Vanessa's lake house was so lovely! We had really nice weather so we spent most of our visit outside by the lake, grilling, and relaxing in the sun room. There were four of us staying there and we fit very comfortably, plenty of space. The house is in a residential neighborhood, but it felt very private and secluded. There's also a grocery store down the main street, which was great. I'd definitely recommend any one to stay there and we hope to stay again soon!

This spacious two-bedroom apartment is nestled in the heart of Chester village, steps from the quaint town's multiple restaurants, galleries and shops. You’ll appreciate its proximity to the charms of this small New England town and its comforts. The living room and master bedroom are quite large, while the kitchen and second bedroom are cozy. This apartment is terrific for couples, friends traveling together, business travelers and families with bigger kids.
Things you should know about the space: * There are two flights of stairs to navigate: One up to the apartment, a second flight up to the bedrooms and the bathroom. This may make the apartment undesirable for families with young children. * The bathroom is built under a slanted roofline, which could cause taller guests (6 feet+) to crouch a bit in the shower. * Parking on the street can be difficult to find during the summer or busy weekends. It usually makes sense to double-park to unload/load up, and then move your vehicle to one of the two nearby public lots: The Cemetery Lot is about 100 yards away, going to the left of the building past The Good Elephant and Otto restaurants; the Maple Street Lot is up the hill directly across from The Perfect Pear, about 200 yards up on the left. * Please note that on Summer Sundays from mid-June through mid-October, there is a very popular Farmers' Market from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. It is strongly suggested that you put your car into a public lot the night before, as there is towing/ticketing on the street during the market hours and it is quite crowded. * The apartment is "in town," which can mean there is some street noise, especially on Friday or Saturday nights coming from the pub down the block. Any frivolities typically wrap up by midnight. We've found that by keeping the windows closed and using the air conditioner fans on medium or high (on either "Fan Only" or "AC"), it can help to mitigate the noise. Please see other guests' comments about this in our Reviews.
  • The apartment was just perfect, and the location can't be beat. Laura was quick to respond to questions, and check-in and -out, effortless. Would recommend staying in this awesome apartment. Thanks Laura!

  • This place is comfy and enjoyable. Truly a full apartment that was more spacious and more accessible than I anticipated. Parking was absolutely a non issue. For price it definitely beats the hotel competition and outs closer to most places in the Chester, Essex, Deep River area if you need to be there for the weekend.

Step into an 18th century home with serenity that is rare, set off a quiet street, twenty five feet from the babbling Chester Creek that flows into beautiful pond with waterfall and steps to the village which Jacques Pepin calls ..."a jewel of a town out of a movie set- it reminds me of a quaint village of Provence, theater, galleries and great food". The home has four bedrooms with two full baths upstairs and a guest bath on the first floor nestled between five other rooms and stone terrace.
A beautifully serene and freshly renovated historic home situated on a beautiful creek, pond and waterfall, so private it makes one feel as if they are in a european countryside and yet the village center is steps away. The house boasts a living room, dining room, a book filled sitting room with fireplace, family room with flat screen television and gourmet kitchen with dining at the counter or table overlooking the terrace with water views. The second floor has four bedrooms all with three comfy double beds and a king. The third floor is unavailable attic space.
It is very peaceful. Chester is a quiet community with a lot going on.
  • Nikki's home is extremely charming - perfect for that quiet getaway where you want to read in a private back yard by a babbling brook and also walk into a charming town with great restaurants. Nikki was a wonderful host and made every effort to ensure we had a great stay.

    Zia2015-06-08T00:00:00Z
  • This place is STUNNING, and Nikki is a lovely and welcoming host. The adirondack chairs by the babbling brook made it the perfect oasis. You will feel at home, and it's walkable to the center of Chester and great restaurants.

    Ann2016-05-23T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great stay at the house, celebrating a family Thanksgiving. Nikki set the table in wonderful fashion, replete with a floral arrangement. The house is quite lovely, with many antiques and designer furnishings. The spaces are great, with different areas of the house providing the setting for different activities. In the day time we sat in the back of the house and read or played games. Before dinner, we spent time in the living room, and then after dinner (in the dining room) we sat by the fire in the den (?). The bedrooms are nice and of good size. Just a note that aside from the master, which has a king-sized bed, the others are traditional doubles, which may be a bit small for some couples. Chester is a wonderful small town, and we enjoyed dinner at the River Tavern and a run in nearby Cockaponset State Park, which has many miles of trails. We are indebted to Nikki, who was a great host. Thanks!

  • Had friends in from out of town, and Nikki's place was the perfect place for them! Beautiful home in a lovely setting. Morning coffee on the patio by the creek can't be beat. Thanks Nikki!

  • Nikki was warm and welcoming and the location was ideal. Walkable to town for coffee, farmers market, and great restaurants. A great weekend splurge!

    Hillary2016-09-20T00:00:00Z
  • This home is even better than it looks in the pictures. It's spotlessly clean and beautifully furnished. The house itself is a piece of history and it has been renovated and added on to with architectural care. This is the first home I've stayed in where the reality was better than the pictures. Nikki was a great host, friendly and gracious when we had a change in our arrival time. The house has so many nooks to curl up in, so many spots outdoors. Everyone reported sleeping well, and one small detail that made a huge difference for me personally was the lighting design. This house is spectacular even when the sun goes down. Low incandescent area lighting on timers over art work, in corners, creates a magical atmosphere. Hands down the best air b n b experience I've ever had.

Stunning artisan renovation. Over ten years of craftsmanship went into creating a work of art using more than 80% recycled building materials. Known locally as "The Recycle House," this is the perfect place to stay to explore shops and galleries in downtown Chester - just steps away. When you are done shopping, come back and relax in the zen-like garden overlooking a waterfall or curl up inside by the gas fire place. If you are looking for a place to get away from it all, look no further!
The Recycle House is just a 3 minute stroll from downtown Chester. Learn more about Chester's local attractions, including restaurants, shops and galleries, and annual events here: http://chesterct.org/about-chester/
  • Highly recommended! The Recycle House is a dream. The home is cozy, relaxing, full of character and clearly built with love. The garden and yard are beautiful and relaxing with sounds of the creek nearby. Best yet, the Recycle House is within walking distance to the adorable downtown Chester where there are great restaurants, coffee shops and art galleries. The home truly made our weekend getaway and I'd love to stay here again!

Great location, walk to town & only steps to the Connecticut River. Great for train aficionados- you can watch and photograph the famous Essex steam train in action. This historic factory built in 1874 has manufactured sails, metal objects and lastly Lace. Enjoy your private comfortable apartment with river views and deck.
This private apartment overlooks the Connecticut River, Essex steam train and Becky Thatcher Riverboat. It is part of an old factory. You have your own private entrance and deck.
Our neighborhood is awesome, the river is right across the street we get to see everybody because they walk their dogs down here. There is a park across the street -you might be lucky enough to be there on a concert night. You can walk into town it's less than a mile away. This building is an event venue. We are three seasons and do weddings from April to November. Weekends would not be available as we have weddings and your space doubles as the bridal suite!!!
  • Lovely apartment in a lovely location. We enjoyed walking by the river and looking at some of the beautiful old houses in the area. Great value!

  • Andrea and Angus were very welcoming and helpful. The accommodations were great. We would definitely stay there on our next trip and would highly recommend it.

  • We had a lot of fun staying in Andrea's apartment overlooking the train station and a snowy landscape! The area is rural and picturesque--exactly what we needed for a weekend away. The apartment was warm and bed comfy. And I really loved all the beautiful textiles that added a global, homey feel.

    Lee Lee2016-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • This was a quick stop on a road trip. Andrea was delightful, gracious, a wonderful communicator. We arrived late in the evening, in the dark, so were happily surprised by the spectacular views that were revealed in the morning. If Andrea offers breakfast, say YES! She is an amazing cook - a parade of perfectly portioned treats! We hope to return and stay a bit longer.

    Julia2016-10-05T00:00:00Z
  • Our family loved our visit to Andreas fabulous home. Not only was the apartment very spacious and clean, but it had a lovely porch overlooking the Connecticut river and the Essex steam train. The bed was comfy and and we slept well in the quiet of the area. The Lace Factory is a great historic building and the surrounding gardens are beautiful. Overall the space is very relaxing and we wished we could of stayed longer.

  • Andrea made me feel welcome from the start...and told me I was their first Airbnb guest. When I arrived later in the evening, there was a friendly holiday party going on downstairs which they invited me to join. The bed was super comfy and the coffee machine made great morning coffee. Lovely view of the CT River and a beautiful deck which would be really nice to use in warmer weather.

Charming lake cottage in the Lake Hayward section of East Haddam, CT. Walk to lake, tennis, hiking, running, biking. Close to the historic Goodspeed Opera House, Essex, CT, the CT River, Mohegan Sun/Foxwoods and even the Rhode Island shore. Contact me for personalized check in/out if necessary~
This is a quintessential lake cottage with a vintage vibe. It's a great little spot to get away from it all (except we have cable TV and WiFi) and relax. The community is friendly and it is very safe.
  • We had a wonderful experience. There was a small hiccough with the internet and Nancy had it fixed in record time. The cottage is lovely, small but well appointed. The neighborhood was very quiet and the lake was lovely. My kids had a terrific time.

    Karen2016-08-18T00:00:00Z
  • Great little cottage. Slept my 4 person band with ease. The lake was a perfect r&r day on tour for us. We will be back.

    Isaac2017-08-21T00:00:00Z
  • It's just exactly what I grew up with, the musty smell, comforts and everything that goes with a lake/beach cottage. Fully stocked cabinets and pantry, and everything else including extra blankets for bed. that it in itself surprised me I didn't expect a pantry of wide variety of foods, that I could have access to. I didn't use anything because it wasn't mine, but the sense of it being a "home" away from home was there, it was exactly what I was looking for. Nancy didn't explain how exactly to access the cottage but I figured out really easily enough, the parking passes are awesome. I didn't feel like locking up the house because it was already unlocked, and the neighbors didn't care much about me leaving or going back. It's a really nice atmosphere to be at, a neighborhood that you can trust freely, and a private lake access with various of activities available was the selling point for me. I must admit that I lost my favorite pair of sunglasses in the lake, my fault, I forget how light they were when I jumped from the lake platform to the lake. In all, it's exactly what I needed and expected from a cottage by the lake. All of my childhood memories came flooding back soon as I set foot into the place. Nancy even bought a pack of firelogs for her fireplace, which I used throughly with great appreciation, too bad I didn't buy s'more stuff, and bug spray.

    emily2015-08-30T00:00:00Z
  • A great cabin for just us two visitors.

    Matthew2017-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • A neat little cottage surrounded by trees in a very nice community. All the modern amenities and appliances one would need (minus washer and dryer but it is a little cottage) as well as a patio with a charcoal grill and picnic table large enough to seat 8 comfortably. A queen, two twins and two couches provided adequate room for comfortable sleeping arrangements. The interior was very homey and cozy, exactly what I was looking for in a wooded cottage by a lake. Nancy was very responsive and answered all of my questions as well as provided a flexible check-in and check-out experience. There was also a hearth/fire pit in the back, perfect for a late night bonfire. I would definitely stay here again if I were visiting Connecticut.

    Aleksandre2016-07-05T00:00:00Z
  • The House is lack of maintenance. If you are staying for no more than 3 days (so you will not need washer and dryer) you will be ok. If you staying during cold days, you will experience a really loud days and nights because of the heater central unit. every time that the unit start or stops you will hear a loud noise (if you don't care weak up during the night because the noise, this house may be for you). We full fill the trash can with really old food cans and other things that we found in the kitchen cabinets and drawers of the bedrooms (If the owner charge money for cleaning, I can't understand how we found 2007 food cans and other things in the kitchen cabinets and the bedrooms drawers). Some people will found nice to rent a house and see the owners family pictures in there. I personally think that is freaky. The outside needs a lot of work (Gutter about to fall, some broke furniture). If you like camping in the woods, I thing this house will be for you. Good luck. Thanks Alberto

    Alberto2015-10-31T00:00:00Z
  • Was a nice place to stay.

    Dara2017-07-30T00:00:00Z
  • It's small and basic, but cozy and there were no surprises from the description. Nancy was very responsive and understanding for our entire stay, and even let us check in early on our first day, which was very helpful. We attended an event at Mohegan Sun, so it was a little ways away, making getting an Uber or Lyft a little challenging, but otherwise everything was as expected. And the price was hard to beat! Enjoyed our stay!

  • My son and I stayed at Robb's cottage from Aug 13-16. We were welcomed by his wife, who gave us the key and showed us where everything is. We asked if we could use the kayaks, and they gladly obliged. This cottage is exactly as described. It is a lovely community. There are a lot of things to do in the area, we visited Devil's Hopyard (about a 10 minute drive), the town of East Haddam, Essex and one day at an ocean beach. Or, you can sit and enjoy the lake. If you want a quiet place to relax, this is it! Robb and Carol are wonderful hosts. They are there if you need something and not there if you want to be alone. We hope to visit again in the future. Although there is no WiFi in the cottage (exactly as advertised) if you have an account with Comcast, there is an XFinity Hot Spot within range, however, it was good to be unplugged for a weekend. It gave us time to enjoy the sunrise and the previously mentioned birds singing.

    Donna2015-08-16T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely loved this cozy cabin by the woods! It has everything you need for a pleasant stay by the lake and Robb and Carol were great hosts. It is a peaceful retreat. I highly recommend it if you are looking to unplug.

  • What a perfect weekend! My father and I went to see my sister in CT this weekend. We even brought my dogs, and it was perfect place for the pups! Robb and Carol were incredible and so sweet! They helped us check in and made sure we were comfortable. It was one of the prettiest views I have seen, especially in the fall. If looking for a nice cabin, choose this place!!

    Emily2017-10-29T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at Robb and Carol's place was wonderful! We could not have asked for a better location- the lake is beautiful. The cottage was clean, cute, and comfortable- it was everything we were looking for. The deck offered a great view of the lake and there were plenty of things to keep us busy and relaxed outdoors and indoors as well. Checking in and out was a breeze and our hosts were very responsive. They provided us plenty of information about the area and things to do along with use of their personal boats and fresh eggs from their chickens for our breakfast. I would not hesitate to stay here again.

    Summer2017-07-16T00:00:00Z
  • Robb and Carol were wonderful hosts. It felt like visiting family! They were there to greet us, and allowed us free use of all of their many water activities. They were kind and attentive and went above and beyond.

    Audrey2016-07-11T00:00:00Z
  • After a long day and finally starting the camp fire, I discovered I forgot the marshmallows!!! Robb came over and asked if we needed any help, must have looked like we were struggling with the fire, I told him about the lack of marshmallows. Soon he was back with a bag, much to our granddaughters delight! We had a great time! It is a cabin not a house, but has everything you need for a delightful vacation with kids. Thanks Robb and Carol!

    Linda2016-08-13T00:00:00Z
  • This is the perfect cottage if you are looking for that typical cottage stay with that old time feel. It is immaculate and has everything you could imagine. We loved everything about it. Robb and Carol are the best hosts we have had since we started using Air BNB they are kind and welcoming and treat you like family. If you are looking for an amazing stay come here.

Secluded cottage on a non working farm. Very quiet with beautiful views of stones walls, fields and barns. There is wonderful biking, hiking, cross country skiing, kayaking, sight seeing, and golf at Fox Hopyard, Connecticut's favorite public course.
Beautiful, quiet road on the Connecticut River. Lovely views.
  • To say this is in one of the most beautiful places in the world would not be an exaggeration. Selden Cottage is a serene, comfortable and idyllic retreat. There is plenty of room to eat and lounge. We enjoyed every meal on the front porch simply taking in the birds and natural beauty. Clinton is a thoughtful and engaging host. We had ZERO issues during our stay. Clinton provided us great local tips and insider knowledge. There were lovely walks/hikes right out the door of the cottage. And the Connecticut shore is a short drive away. There are wonderful historic sites nearby - by foot or car. We had no idea the Connecticut River was so special. Thank you, Selden Cottage for a very special stay!

  • This house was very well suited for a weekend get away for a large group in a small quiet town. The property had activities for young and old in and outside the house. A couple restaurants were near by, a theatre for a different type of night, and the house had a large lawn if you are looking to enjoy being outside instead of couped up in a city where you don't see any grass. The basketball court was good to use, but there was not tennis net, so that would need to brought by the visitors of the house unfortunately. The owners responded fairly quickly to a couple issues that we had with the house.

  • Great big clean very nice house! Has everything you need! Close to the town and convenient to get on the road to neighboring towns. Pool and spa are fun! There are some neighbors on the one side so it's not as private as you might think.

Private bedroom, bath and loft lounge in a traditional New England home located in a serene, woodland area next to state forest. Fifteen minute drive to theaters, shopping, dining, beaches, boating, hiking, antiquing, horses and farm stands. There is a nice little country store and breakfast place 2 minutes down the road. This is a very scenic area with small New England villages and the lower Ct River Valley to explore.
Guests will arrive via our driveway where there is plenty of parking. Entrance is through the trellis at the edge of the driveway, along the garden and through the patio door to the mudroom. Laundry is to the left and the guest suite is up a private staircase to the loft/lounge (with plenty of reading material and board games) and bedroom with private bath (three rooms total.) Bedroom has windows to the north and east with room-darkening shades and bathroom has a large skylight. There is a dresser for guests use and air conditioning in the bedroom. Coffee, microwave and a small refrigerator are available for guest use only.
  • This is a great location for anyone staying in the Connecticut River area of lower CT, and the price is right. It is convenient to get to all the towns and attractions in the area. Pam was a charming host and the place exactly what we expected.

    Debbie2017-10-16T00:00:00Z
  • We arrived at night and it took a few minutes to find the right driveway, but once we did it was very easy to get in. The space was beautiful, beds comfortable, and quiet. We didn't have a chance to meet our hosts, but they were very communicative and helpful. In the morning, we got to see the scenery - beautiful.

    Dorothy2017-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • Had a great stay, Pam was very welcoming. The house was very nice and the location was great...would def. stay again!

  • Pam and Mark are tremendous hosts and have a lovely property in Deep River. The facilities are excellent and the Airbnb space was first class. We would have definitely loved to stay longer! It's such a peaceful place set in a lovely wooded environment. We both absolutely loved being there and if you manage to book this property you won't be disappointed. If you get a chance I'm sure Pam and Mark would love a chance for an exchange of travelling experiences! A fantastic experience all round.

    Lenny2017-10-29T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely stay here! The space was clean, comfortable and stylish. We arrived in the evening when the road was a bit dark but were able to find it with no problem. And it was very nicely located. We highly recommend this location!

    Libby2017-10-28T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent spot! Described very well. Our 1 st Airbnb venture and Pamela set the bar high. Private, woodland setting with just what you need. We only got to see Pamela and her husband briefly due to scheduled events, but felt we would have enjoyed the opportunity to visit longer. I thought it might feel "odd" going into someone else's home... but Pamela gave us a very brief walk through, let us know what we needed and told us to call her if we needed anything. Perfect

    Paula2017-10-01T00:00:00Z
  • Pamela's place is really nice. Clean, comfortable and cozy. The setting is amazing too. In the morning we saw a couple of deers in the wood behind the house! We wish we could stay more. Thanks!

The Connecticut Retreat was built by a pair of New Yorkers who wanted a "spiritual and artist retreat" convenient to NYC but far from the fast-paced lifestyle of the City. The Retreat is situated on 10 wooded acres surrounded by 1000 acres of forest. Take a short walk through the woods to the swimming lake with a sandy beach. The compound is located on an ancient country road and is a short hike to pristine lakes and miles of trails. Great for family vacation or short-term corporate relocation.
The Tree House is an airy, bright, open, and secluded guest cottage that is perched high within the tree tops on a ridge overlooking Connecticut State Forests. The House is a 1,000 sq. ft., custom-designed studio, with 20-foot high windows and 12 foot doors that open onto a 300 sq.ft. wrap-around deck with a spectacular view of a roaring brook and over a 1000 acres of forest. It's like being in a tree house -- breath-taking and expansive. The Connecticut Retreat is remote but convenient to the culture of Chester with its Goodspeed Opera House, the charm of Essex with the panoramic beauty of the Connecticut River; and the Hammonasset Beach on the shoreline of Long Island Sound -- all within 8 miles. The Connecticut Retreat is 100 miles from New York City or Boston, 15 minutes away to MetroNorth trains in Clinton and 20 minutes to the Amtrak station in Old Saybrook, 40 minutes to Metro North in New Haven or Bradley Airport in Hartford. Search CTretreat for more information and photos.
  • This place is very secluded but there is a lovely park only a few minutes walk down the road. The beach and anything else you would need is no more than 25 minutes away. This is great for a quiet weekend getaway and perfect for groups. We had 6 people and it was a perfect place to play card games and hangout for a calm weekend. Friendly labs live on the property which was a great plus. You definitely need a car that can drive up a tough steep hill. Paul was beyond great. One thing to note is that the sliding doors don't lock.

    Emily2017-08-07T00:00:00Z
  • This is a gem of a space, almost do not want to praise it as much as I will , to keep it to ourselves. So serene , uniquely peaceful... pure zen. The ride in is 'up' hill and needs a strong vehicle for certain. The space is open and the windows into the woods truly create the treehouse effect...pure fantasy.

    Terri2017-07-17T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful scenic house. Loved the architecture and art around the house. Paul was very helpful with any questions we had. Great setting in the woods. Lots of beds and perfect for a family.

  • Our family spent 11 nights at the Tree House in Killingworth. We enjoyed the quiet seclusion of a property surrounded by trees, and the warm atmosphere of the house itself. The main thing to be aware of is that you really do need a 4 wheel drive vehicle to make the steep climb up to the guest house. Our car only had front wheel drive, so we parked down below and made the walk back and forth each day (about a 5 minute walk, at least with kids). Paul transported us and our luggage in his SUV up to the house when we arrived.

    Louise2016-05-16T00:00:00Z
  • This is an absolutely fantastic house in the woods. If you want quiet and comfort, nature and relaxation - this is your place. It is somewhat remote but easily accessible. If you are looking for a big flat screen TV then that's not the place for you - this place is serene - no big entertainment needed (in my opinion) but it is not rustic, it's very comfortable, it's a home beautifully decorated and furnished. Just note that if you have T-mobile you won't have reception out there but there is wifi so you can communicate using the internet/data. If you don't like dogs this might not be your place either, the labs are roaming the grounds (as clearly mentioned in the description) but are awesome creatures, lovely, well-behaved and fun. Paul is a perfect host: Always there when you need him but does never give you the feeling that he is looking over your shoulder or checking in on you unnecessarily. We hope to travel there again, for sure!

    Daniel2017-07-31T00:00:00Z
  • This place allows you to feel like you’re escaping deep into the wilderness, while only really being a few miles away from the local stores and restaurants in case you find yourself needing anything. The place was exactly as described & slept 5 comfortably. We had our 5 & 8 year old daughters with us & they really enjoyed the loft area that was well stocked with board games and DVD’s. Paul was a wonderful host, he met us outside upon arrival & immediately made us feel welcome. He gave us some nice tips about the local area & also had the house well stocked with additional information on it.

  • Dennis and Evelyn were great hosts! We arrived later than expected and they were kind enough to insure that we arrived safely and had what we needed. We stayed with our 3 teenagers and the peace and tranquility offered in the quiet, friendly community there at Lake Hayward was just what we needed. The hosts even provided water rafts and beach chairs for us to use. We enjoyed our stay and appreciated our hosts keeping us updated on important info during the week via voicemail/texts.

  • The area where this cabin is located is absolutely beautiful, especially in the fall! The host was fantastic and made communicating very easy. He responded immediately to answer questions I had and responded immediately to replace the showerhead when it broke. He provided firewood for the fire pit, gas for the gas grill and a few cold beers and a bottle wine was waiting for us in the fridge when we arrived which was quite welcomed! This cabin layout was perfect with two toddlers as it was open and gave them room to run and play. Coffee on the front deck watching the sunrise with the steam coming up over the lake was absolutely wonderful. Canadian geese flying overhead several times A day was very cool as well. The host was willing to let me invite several family members over for a cookout and pumpkin carving. It was the perfect location to try and get all of my family together at one time. I would definitely consider staying here again!

    Susan2017-10-24T00:00:00Z
  • Dennis was a great host from beginning to end. From the time of the booking he stayed in touch to make sure his property indeed would suited for my family to have a confortable stay. He left the kitchen fully stocked: a small grill with a full tank of, propane, and an ice chest for us to use during our day trips. Upon checking, he was available within minutes from calling him. The property was small, but it was very comfortable for a party of six. It is minutes from the lake, it is semi-secluded, and it is very peaceful at night. We enjoyed out stay at Dennis' place.

The home was built in 1887 as a wedding gift to his bride Louisa by Charles Jarvis, the son of the treasurer of the Brownstone Quarry (Brownstone from the quarry Up the street built NYC and Boston.) We are Half a mile from a few restaurants and pubs, just over the bridge from Middletown (Wesleyan University.) We have lots of kids and lots of chickens. A garden. Just a simple rustic family :)
Guests can use the kitchen and all other living spaces. We are in and out a lot, but when we are in, there may or May not be small children about. Feel free to make yourself at home! The front and side porches as well as an upstairs small deck can all be used. The backyard chairs and such can be used by anyone. There is the possibility of attic use, weather permitting. It's not insulated but is lovely in the fall and spring with a queen set, hardwood flooring, and tons of space. Just keep it in mind if you need to spread out a bit. Totally rustic.
While there are a few spots between here and the bridge, Middletown is really where all the action is. On our side of the bridge, if you have a car you can take a scenic drive along the river towards Glastonbury, finding several nice restaurants and shopping areas, a winery or hiking depending on the path you choose.
  • Coreyanne is super welcoming and hospitable! Great family and wonderful old home. Comfortable room and she left some great smelling shower stuff for us! 10/10 would book again. About 2 miles to Middletown which is super pretty!!!

    Meryl2017-10-23T00:00:00Z
  • Coreyanne's place is 5 minutes from Wesleyan University and the main street with restaurants, etc. It has the essential ingredient of a fun airbnb stay, i.e., a relaxed, welcoming host. Ask to see the PG-13 Latin inscriptions on the dining room ceiling. Coreyann and her affable children, together with details like this, make for the real experience when choosing a home stay versus a hotel. I know a room in a house with otherwise shared spaces is not for everyone, but the guest who prefers the glimpse into someone else's real life with normal messes to a sterile hotel room will enjoy the stay immensely. Thanks for the breakfast sausage and bagel as well!

    Julie2017-10-04T00:00:00Z
  • I had a wonderful time staying at Coreyanne's place. She was extremely accommodating, and often went the extra mile to ensure that my stay went smoothly. The room was clean, and her kids were great. Would definitely stay again!

  • You enter a great, huge and old wooden house with a wonderful flair! The family is great, you meet many children and cats! I liked it there! There's a lot going on, no 'private' stay :)

    Stefan2017-10-09T00:00:00Z
  • The location was great, beautiful home, and tons of fun. We were pretty well prepared because we read the other reviews. There are 8 kids, so it's a lot of energy in the house, but they are so polite and such a blast. Definitely a great stay if you're looking for a family experience!
