The Californian beach town of Del Mar, located less than half an hour north of San Diego, is a popular stop on the world-famous Highway 101. May and early June can sometimes be a bit cloudy, while late June, July, and August offer the warmest weather, which attracts beachcomber and swimmers to the shoreline. Every June, there is a popular local fair, where the grounds are turned into a thriving center of entertainment for all ages with more than 40 food concessionaires, over 250 vendors selling crafts, carnival rides, and local musicians. During the spring and fall, visitor numbers drop and you may even have the beach to yourself. Winter is when temperatures are at their lowest, but consistent swells make this the best time for surfing.

This pristine two-mile-long beach is popular with sun-worshippers all year round. Surfers line the shore in the winter when the waves are at their highest, while summer brings gentler surf and more a relaxing environment for swimming and paddling. There are also two tranquil oceanfront parks, which offer a scenic setting for a coastal picnic.

Torrey Pines Natural State Reserve

Less than 10 minutes south of Del Mar, this rugged landscape is made up of nearly 2,000 acres of protected state reserve. This is one of the most untamed sections of southern California, with hiking paths passing through untouched natural environments before reaching soaring cliffs offering sweeping views out across the Pacific Ocean. Look out for humpback whales down below, as well as flowering cacti and coyotes.

Del Mar Farmers Market

Sitting just a street from the beach on Camino Del Mar, Del Mar Farmers Market showcases locally grown produce. The stalls have handcrafted artwork, heirloom tomatoes, honey, fragrant herbs, and other locally-created items. Locals pick up seasonal fruit and handmade cheeses for impromptu al fresco dinners by the waves.
