  • Robert and Christian have been great on communicating and being host for us. However, there are problems with the property that we were not able to overcome and had to get a hotel in San Jose for the remainder of our trip. We understand that is property is half outdoors and are ok with the bugs outside and some inside However, the number of bugs inside of the room got to be unbearable. In our two days there we had to kill multiple spiders and countless ants, termites, and various other bugs. Although you have a great bar area for cooking and they left us breakfast supplies we didn't make use of any due to the number of bugs that accumulate in the area. We understand this property is half outdoors and you can only do so much but we only had a few days here and couldn't stay in a place that we couldn't relax in after being gone all day. I specifically asked if there were keys to the home because I was concerned for our safety and the safety of our belongs. I was informed there were no keys upon our arrival and we had to leave all of our belongs unsecured in the room. In addition to no keys to lock anything (there was not even a key to the safe) there also were no curtains for the slidings glass door. Leaving the bedrooms completely transparent for anyone walking up to the property. The curtains that were there are completely transparent. The boxspring of the bed is littered with the bodies of dead bugs. The water in the showers stay hot for only a minute then they're warm for about a minute then are cold. Also, of course, the property is hot in the rooms but this wasn't a deal breaker but was uncomfortable. We thank you for the fans and would have opened a window but didn't due to the bugs on the property. Despite all this, however, we still planned on finishing the remainder of our booking. The straw that broke the camels back was a large ant running across my chest in the middle of the night while in bed, after killing a spider 10 minutes before that. We appreciate the effort and hospitality you've shown us on our stay our stay at Casa Bella. Christian was amazing and you were poised and responsive to us, I'd have no problem renting another property from you. However this property, in my opinion, is not fit for guest.

  • This place is great! In a very safe, quiet neighbourhood, great views of the surrounding area. Jay was very accommodating, providing eggs, bread, milk, beer, wine, and the list goes on. The information provided in his guest book was very useful and informative, detailing restaurants and places to visit. Beds were extremely comfortable. I recommend staying here!

  • The place has a great view but it is dirty and no Air condition inside the rooms. Alot of noise place was dirty everywhere. Christian was very helpful and gave us alot of tips what to do during our stay. Other than christian everything was bad i dont reccomend this place. Nothing around the city is so far from the house

  • Nice place in a good location. Christian was very helpful because the owner was out of town. Would come back

  • This place was beautiful. Close to the airport, comfy beds, breakfast foods provided. However, we had a major communication problem with Jay before arriving. We ended up having to call his friend Christian as Jay was not responding. Christian was not aware we were coming, but thankfully was very helpful in getting the place ready in time. Everything ended up working out. Loved this place, aside from the communication issues.

  • Mr. Trudeau is a marvelous host and Casa Bella is a wonderful, glamorous, adventurous place to stay. Jay meets you when you arrive at the gated community and provides you with all the information you need to make your stay comfortable. He immediately strikes you as an honest and forthright person. After the initial greeting and introduction Jay allows you the utmost privacy but is only a phone call away if you need anything at all. A cell phone with GPS is provided so when you venture out there is no fear of getting lost and in the back of your mind you know Jay will be there to help you out. The view from the living area is spectacular looking out over the lights of San Juan and the Central Valley of Costa Rica. Watching the lights slowly twinkle on each evening and the moon rise became a nightly ritual. There is almost always a gentle breeze tempering the warmest part of the day and lulling you to sleep at night. The bed is of high quality and extremely comfortable as are all the furnishings. We stayed at Casa Bella for four weeks, never had a complaint or problem, and we will stay there again without a second thought when we return to Costa Rica in October. It easily became our home away from home and we look forward to our return.

  • Had a great experience at Casa Bella and Jay's friend, Cristian, went out of his way to ensure our full satisfaction. We end up staying longer at this house because it had everything we needed, plus more. The views were awesome and the bedrooms were just perfect. I will definitely use him again.

  • Jays house was awesome very nice and peaceful we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay there again. The view is spectacular and the neighborhood is very safe and quiet, not to mention the host he was very nice and provided us with a good welcoming. If you are looking for a nice and peace stay this is highly recommended!

    Atenas Canton, Alajuela, Costa Rica

Beautiful, private villa with a fabulous ocean view and a secluded, infiniti pool. Very popular villa with both honeymooners and retired people. It is a prvate subdivision with 26 villas with support from rental manager and other staff. The villa is almost equal distant from both Liberia - LIR and San Jose - SJO airports. I believe it is easier to drive south from Liberia airport on a straight, scenic and paved highway.
The 3500 square feet villa is on a very private, 2/3 acre lot with ocean and rain forest views. The beautiful swimming pool is partially shaded by a picturesque "Corteza Amarillo" tree. The villa has "Almond Wood" hardwood floors in the living area including bedrooms. The full kitchen has black granite counter tops. All appliances, pots, silverware, china and coffeemaker are included in the kitchen. The gazebo has both gas Bar-B-Q and 4 burner cook-top with ocean views. Master bathroom has 2 large bowl sinks, large tub, bidet and large windows with a view of the rain forest. The house a large, flat screen TV, amplifier with whole house, surround sound, speaker system. The house has 10 fans and air conditioning. The large master bedroom has a king bed and the second spacious suite has a full bath with two queen beds. The house is on a hill top with wonderful 120 degree views of Nicoya bay and the hilltop location gives one a unique sense of Privacy with no neighbor to look in. The subdivision is 3 miles from the ferry station but it is advisable to rent an SUV so short day trips to Nicoya, Samarra, Carillo, Tambor, Paqueras ( Tortuga island snorkeling ) can be done. Renters have access to a near by grocery and liquor store. The store also provides DVDs and books free of charge. Concierge service is also included. The "Roma del Mar" development has 2 private beaches and a private pier for fishing. There are numerous beaches close by (Playa Blanca 5 kms away) and a golf course at the Tambor Bay. A one time payment of $100 is required for cleaning the villa both before and after the rental. All day maid for cooking is available through the manager and a massage specialist manicurist/ pedicurist available - reservations through management. . The internet access and the router is free. Location Description: Playa Naranjo, Puntarenas, Costa Rica (next to Cabo Blanco on (website hidden) map), Central America. Fly to Liberia Airport (Code: LIR). Two hours drive from Liberia airport and 5 minute drive from Puntarenas/Playa Naranjo Ferry.
The neighborhood is private, quite and away from busy tourist spots with plenty of things to do in the area. Our rental manager has a long list of optional tours
  • Raj has a beautiful villa that is very private and comfortable. My wife and I stayed here for our honeymoon and it was perfect for us. And Raj was amazing with suggestions and advice about where to go and what to do around Costa Rica. I highly recommend this place to anyone wanting to go to a quiet and scenic area of CR. My wife and I loved it!

  • I am not normally a long reviewer, but I will gladly make an exception for Raj's villa. The pictures do not do this place justice. It was absolutely beautiful. Raj was extremely helpful every step of the way and had us exompletely prepared for our stay on this paradise. Between helping put us in contact with the people who ran the villa, giving lists of what to bring and what to expect, we were able to just relax and enjoy our trip. I will recommend this place to anyone I know looking to go to Costa Rica.

  • My husband and I rented the villa for six days and it absolutely took our breath away! The view alone is totally worth the trip. Raj and Arlene were very prompt and professional in their responses to our inquiries and provided all of the necessary information before our arrival. They also gave great suggestions on how to make the best of our stay. We would highly recommend a pool-side massage by Anja, and eating at the local restaurants. Although there is much to do in Costa Rica, this is also a great location for just putting your feet up and total relaxation! The infinity pool is a wonderful amenity, and we found ourselves using it several times a day. Roma Del Mar's beach is also very beautiful, and because of its exclusivity, is easily accessible at all times of the day. We personally suggest a day trip to Playa Samara (about 1.5 hours' drive away) and Playa Blanca (about 5 km from the property). These are two amazing beaches, that you will not want to miss out on! Also, even though you will be reminded to rent a 4x4 vehicle for the trip, we urge everyone to not take this advice lightly! Raj and Arlene, you two are awesome! And we hope to come back sometime in the near future...thank you!

  • This is the best location for a true getaway. From the get go, Raj was a fantastic host. Any questions I had were answered within minutes through email. Extensive, accurate directions and information on our location made it easy to get around stress free. The location is beyond incredible. Definitely off the beaten path, as many have already said, but that is totally in the best way possible. The villa is quiet, and you can't see anyone or any other villas while you are just relaxing and taking in the view. The pool and view are amazing, and even in rainy season when the thunderstorms rolled in, it was breathtaking. There is a beach at the bottom of the hill that is secluded and felt like our very own private beach. There are tables, so you can pack some beers and food and enjoy a nice picnic. My only suggestion would be to drive down (there is parking) because the hills are steep and we struggled walking back up (gotta work on that fitness). The house is equipped with everything you need. The kitchen had all the pots, pans, and dishes we needed. The bathrooms were stocked with plenty of towels. There is also a washer/dryer for anyone interested. And we can't forget the outdoor gas grill and burners. We used it often and it really added to the experience. Cooking in the rain was a blast. We will without a doubt be back. All around A+ experience.

  • Wow! What a wonderful place. Every bit as gorgeous as pictured and described. We spent 4 luxurious days in the villa enjoying the infinity pool, the incredible view, waking to howler monkeys, cooking wonderful meals and venturing out for a fantastic day of sea kayaking set up by the helpful property manager. As others have noted, the driving in this part of Costa Rica is rough, fun but rough. definitely get a 4x4 and enjoy the serpentine unpaved roads south to montezuma (the waterfall is awesome, as is the climb), and mal pais and st theresa beach are BEAUTIFUL! We stayed here the first 4 days of our 2 1/2 week visit to Costa Rica and could not be happier with our decision to stay at Raj's gorgeous villa.

  • What an amazing place - we had such a great time in Raj's Villa!!! We stayed there the last week of our 3 week adventure in Costa Rica and it was the most beautiful and relaxing place to stay. The villa is even more beautiful than the pictures! There is a grocery store just down the road, beautiful beaches close by. Raj was very helpful in advance of our arrival with great tips and advice. We would definitely come back!!!

  • I'm afraid my review is going to be very repetitive, echoing the others you have read. All of us can't be wrong. This place is pretty amazing. I've never seen such a perfect view. You actually have to peer around a corner to see another house, there's one on either side, but they are much lower and tucked back. The pool/patio offers a solid 180 view of the Nicoya Bay, and it is just perfect. We liked this place so much, that I just had to ask my girlfriend to marry me with that view in the background. (I'm writing from her account) We'll never forget the time we spent at Roma del Mar. The house is the best part of the trip. Surround sound really sets the mood and made the house feel like ours with our favorite tunes playing in every room. I have to disagree with many reviews on one note, the local beach, just down the dirt road, was a personal beach, gorgeous and inviting. The shore is composed of broken down shells, which were fun to look at and and not too bad on bare feet. It's a little rocky in the water, but it's warm, very private, and so close by. We were kicking ourselves because we waited till the last day to venture down the road. The beach is worth a stop, it felt like our beach for 2 full hours, just us and the birds. If you are wanting to see some monkeys, go down to playa blanca, just about 10 minutes away from Roma Del Mar, when leaving the villa, take a left instead of a right which would take you to the main road. There is a massive tree at the end of the road when you hit the beach. It's right next to a former bar, that has been closed for a long time. We saw well over 20 howler monkeys in this tree, howling swinging, and being pretty active in the middle of the day. The area seems a little sketchy, as other reviewers noted, but we didn't have any problem and saw a great show. You can hear two groups of howler monkeys from Raj's house, but neither are so close to keep you up at night or wake you in the morning, I was thankful for that. Finally, the little market was great, Arlene was helpful and available, and Raj responds to emails as fast as you could imagine. This was very helpful to us when our flights were switched twice in the span of two days. We didn't miss a beat thanks to Raj and Arlene. I hope to go back some day, bringing some friends with us next time. There is plenty to explore around the area, but just staying at the house, soaking in that view, and having a few cold Imperials will always sound like heaven to me.

  • Amazing villa with amazing views! Raj and Caroline are super helpful with booking adventures! And the provide great instruction on how to get there and surrounding amenities! Great villa for a relaxing off the beaten path stay. We were there during rainy season and 4 wheel drive certainly made us feel more comfortable with the roads in the development.

Lovely wooden structure, nestled in lush rain forest. THE place for nature- and animal lovers. Great porch to watch the monkeys, sloths, iguanas, birds and more. Great pool (shared) on the property! It's THE place to enjoy the lush rain forest and animals, away from the "tourist traps", as one of the reviews says! • Thomas and Lili were truly the consummate host! Thomas met us pronto when I called him, and gave me the insights into life in and around Quepos / Manuel Antonio area. The Tree house was an awesome experience from the moment we walked in the door. It's like being in, and on top of the canopy of the rain forest, but at the same time, you're a few blocks from Quepos. Everyday we saw different animals nearby. Toucan's, Humming birds, Sloth's, monkeys (howler's and white faced) parrots, and various other beautiful animals including the wonderful large Mariposa butterfly. Every night was a treat also, because it's almost like sleeping outside where the stars are right outside the porch. Although it's open, don't fear there were no mosquitoes or flies. We were also treated to a view of their other rentable residence, which was spectacular! Although it was a little out of our range monetarily. It is a treat if you want to rent a whole apt for a night or a few nights or more. Lili was also a treat to meet, my wife had great conversation with her, being they are both into health and helping others. If I ever return, which I hope to, I will definitely return to stay with them. Although, we were only there a few days, I feel as though we are family already! Thanks to Thomas & Lili. In Costa Rica the best time of the day - if you're a nature lover - is the early morning and when dusk starts, because this is when the animals are very active in Costa Rica, although not the only times. If there, do travel around, we went as far as the top of the Oso peninsula. And also as far north as Arenal. So, bottom line, visit Thomas and Lili as soon as you're able to do this! Pura Vida, Grace and peace to all, Jim and Geraldine.

  • Honestly there isn't a lot I can add that everyone who has stayed at the tree house hasn't already said. I was there for 19 nights. It didn't take long for the place to feel like home. I walked into town everyday and picked up groceries to bring back to the tree house and enjoyed all of the amenities that Thomas has provided. I even had a bar-b-q to cook on and a washing machine. Very peaceful place. I had no itinerary when I got there and Thomas helped me put together a trip of a life time. From whitewater rafting to zip lining to even a waterfall repelling trip with an overnight stay in a cave. I actually got to repel 7 different fall while I was there. He is the man when it comes to getting things done for you. Great place to use as a home base and then plan your adventures from there. Some people have said that you need a 4 wheel drive car to get there. NOT. The driveway is a little steep and the road to get there is not in the greatest of shape but any car can make it. Just be careful walking on the driveway. It can be real slippery at times. The only injuries I got the whole time I was in CR doing things was on that driveway. Anyway, go spend as much time as you can at the "Tree House" it will be an experience of a lifetime. Yes, the monkeys come buy almost every day to visit.

  • The treehouse was a very cool place to stay and a very different experience than what we are used to as far as vacations. To start with, the mornings at the treehouse were wonderful. After raining all night, the air was refreshing in the morning and not only that, we would have monkeys visit us almost every morning which was probably the most memorable thing of staying in the treehouse. In addition, we loved our pool as well. For someone who is thinking of staying here, one thing to know is that there is a crazy road (major major potholes) you need to drive up to get to the treehouse. I read about this road in other reviews, but thought people were exaggerating it. They weren't. We didn't end up renting a car so we would walk or take taxis. Some taxis in town would not take us back to our place, because they knew of the crazy road we lived on so you may experience that when you come down. If you rent your own car, then you may have an easier time with that. Also you will like the place if you are adventurous and like nature. Throughout our stay, we shared our showers with our little gecko friends as well as a couple of huge beetles that snuck into the cracks of the treehouse. They aren't harmful, but future visitors should know they will be around for sure. In addition, you may need to like snakes. One of the nights, we were about to go to bed, I looked over at the tree on the balcony and saw a baby snake slithering on it.... it was a baby snake... yet still a snake. Luckily we found a machete in the treehouse and I made my husband take care of the snake since it was literally a couple of feet from where I would be laying my head for the night. Other than that, the treehouse is really cool, but you need to love love nature! As regards to Thomas and Lili the hosts, they were wonderful. One day we needed a ride into Jaco and Lili let us come along for the ride and she dropped us off which was an hour away and was super super nice of her. In addition, anytime we needed a taxi, Thomas would call them for us or get a tour coordinated for us when we decided to do that. The wifi was a little spotty in the treehouse. I don't know if it was because of our location in the rainforest or if it was Costa Rica itself, but if you need total reliance on it for anything in particular you may need to know about that too and consider that. Overall though, it was a great experience staying at the treehouse and my first experience with airbnb in general. I would definitely recommend to any adventurous, non squeamish to creepy crawleys insects, and nature lovers people!

  • Wow, what a great experience.  I started at The Treehouse- a one room accommodation, beautifully lit and decorated, with a nicely appointed kitchen, sitting areas inside and out, cozy bed, shower (with a tree growing thru it) and a big deck on the back. All this in a structure built in and around the trees of the jungle - animals and sounds all around.  I felt surrounded by nature, but very safe. I didn't want to leave! I had initially booked The Treehouse for a couple nights. After the first day I realized I needed more time in Manuel Antonio. So, I asked Thomas if he could accommodate me for an extra night.  The Treehouse was unavailable (book in advance!), however Thomas' other rental (on the same property)- Villa Malinche -was! So I moved up the hill. A single room apartment but oh so magnificent. Villa Malinche has an expansive view of the ocean and garden, windows on three sides and full amenities: kitchen, jacuzzi tub, sound system, tv, wifi... Just gorgeous. I am so fortunate that I was able to stay at both accommodations. To experience nature all around me in a rustic but very comfortable environment at the Treehouse. And then to move on to a more luxurious accommodation,  with every amenity, was really, really incredible. As a woman traveling alone, I felt very comfortable and safe in both accommodations. Thomas took very good care of me, picked me up in Quepos, suggested and booked tours for me that were perfect for what I wanted out of my mini vacation to the Manuel Antonio area. I will definitely be back!  But for a longer stay next time. Thank you Thomas! (Lili too!)

  • This was the best airbnb or bnb that I have ever stayed in, in my entire life. We adored it!! The little house is adorable and has plenty of space and light and air, and the deck -- it's amazing. We spent hours and hours out there, often watching the monkeys who made dramatic and occasionally hilarious appearances now and then. Thomas was terrific as a host. The pool was a nice addition, and I did yoga there too. The landscape, everything. The road to the house is pretty rough so get four wheel drive or do what we did and use public transport., taxis, and walking. Loved it!

  • I had a great time in the treehouse and I highly recommend everyone should have an accommodation once in Costa Rica! Thanks Thomas for this experience!

  • This is an amazing spot! Thomas has created a jungle retreat which combines privacy, convenience, and a sense of adventure. What may not be obvious from the listing is that you don't have to climb into a tree to get into the house. You just walk down a gentle path from the road, which, admittedly, is a bit steep. We had a car so this wasn't an issue. If you are hale and hearty the walk up and down the hill would be quite manageable. We had no trouble with the "creepie crawlies" mentioned by some of the guests. No mosquitos at all; a few friendly lizards, a gekko, and a stray cicada is all. No need to use the mosquito net. One day we were entertained for 30 minutes by a troop of monkeys on our deck. Thomas is a fine host and responds immediately to all requests. He referred us to a terrific guide, who took us bird watching. This is a peak airbnb experience, not to be missed.

  • Serenity now! I stayed in a few places in Costa Rica that offer a "jungle experience" only to find out that they are on the side of a busy road. This treehouse is the real deal. Waking up to monkeys, beautiful sunsets and rises, the sounds of the rainforest, and gracious hosts. I could not have asked for a better getaway than this property. Thank you Thomas and Lill for building it and letting people experience it!

Stay in a cozy 1 BR or 2 BR, upscale Costa Rican-style bungalows with a pristine pool at your doorstep. Look out over the trees to the Pacific ocean from your private balcony and listen to the birds and howler monkeys that call the gardens of Casa Tranquila home.
This one-bedroom architect-designed bungalow comes fully equipped for short stays and month-long getaways. It's perfect for honeymooners or families with up to two kids, as well as small groups of friends. The kitchenette has everything you'll need to eat at home if you wish. The bungalow has a comfy bed, air conditioning throughout, a daybed that fits two people in the living space. The bathroom has a huge glassed-in shower with a big window to the gardens, where monkeys pass regularly. Just outside your door is a cool swimming pool and wooden deck for relaxing, as well as plenty of hammocks. Casa Tranquila was designed with sustainability in mind. The property takes advantage of sea breezes for passive cooling, minimizing the need for A/C. The gray water from your bungalow feeds into the trees and other plants that surround the property instead of washing into the ocean.
Casa Tranquila is located on a hill in a quiet, residential neighborhood of Tamarindo – far enough from the busy downtown that you won't be kept awake by the parties but close enough that you're just a 10 minute walk away from the center of town or 14 minutes to the beach.
  • Jose, his property and the bungalow were all amazing. My wife and I spent 2 nights there on our honeymoon and were sad we had to leave! The bungalow is just a 10 minute walk from the beach, bars and restaurants and we walked pretty much the whole time. The whole property is gorgeous with beautiful trees, a pristine swimming pool, and even a view of the ocean from the deck of the bungalow, which we hadn't anticipated. The bungalow itself is wonderfully appointed and we were so comfortable staying there. Jose is so warm and welcoming as his his beautiful chocolate lab. He was also very flexible with our check-in and check-out times which we really appreciated. Pura Vida!

  • Jose's compound was a nice little paradise close to the beach. He was a gracious host and the entire place was very well kept. We enjoyed relaxing at the pool and had a great time getting to know Guapa. Guapa is the best! Our Bungalow was super cute and clean, and contained everything we needed. We would thoroughly recommend this place and would love to stay here again.

  • Casa Tranquila is about the best way for a family to visit busy Tamarindo. Jose was present and available at his own home in the same compound, but we felt we had our own place. We were welcomed by Jose and the nice chocolate labs, given information and left alone. We were trusted and respected and enjoyed returning to this safe, peaceful place. We will come again.

  • The bungalow was a great place to stay while in tamarindo. You are located above the bustle of town (and have roosters next door that let you know!). The front porch is an excellent place for bird watching and the pool (just steps away) offers a way to cool down any time of day. If driving in, your car is safe inside the gate but parking is a bit tight. Jose is available to answer questions but does not intrude on any of comings and goings. The place is a fun and easy place to stay in

  • We enjoyed our week in in Joses Bungalow in Tamarindo very much. It is situated so far from the center that you don't have all that business and noise, but it is near enough that you won't feel outside. The location itself is wonderfull, great garden with many animals like iguanas, a lovely dog called Guapa, and a nice pool. The bungalow has evetything for cooking. Jose is a very exerted host, we would highly recommend Casa Tranquila.

  • It was a spacious, clean bungalow, and welcoming place to stay. Just make sure you get good directions before you head out to stay here. We saw two howler monkeys right on the property. We had a nice sense of security since the property was gated, and they have two large dogs that live there.

  • Jose was extremely friendly and accommodating. He was available to answer any questions we had about Tamarindo. We loved the bungalow! We cooked in every night and enjoyed candlelit dinners on the patio with friendly dogs at our feet. We felt safe and the town was within walking distance. The security was also legit! We were able to lock up our bungalow and park our car on his property. I would absolutely stay at Casa Tranquilla again if I were passing through! Thanks, Jose!

  • Jose's place was our first stop on our honeymoon in Costa Rica and it couldn't have been more welcoming. It's about a 15-20 minute walk from the main strip / beach in Tamarindo, with a large hill at the end. It was fairly easy for two in-shape people, but be aware. At night there are unlit portions of the walk, so having a flashlight was helpful. We did not have a car and had no trouble getting to/from anywhere we wanted to go in town. The bunaglow (we stayed in the smaller one) had everything we needed: towels, a small kitchen with dishes, bathroom, and large bedroom with A/C (which we used each night, in November). At night there were ants on the floor but they were harmless and gone by morning. The pool and grounds are awesome, and the entire property is secured by a gate (and two lovable pooches). Jose lives on site, and was incredibly friendly and helpful whenever we needed him. We would certainly stay with Jose again if we ever returned to Tamarindo.

Santa Fe style home, twice in Architectural Digest of Costa Rica. Acres of gorgeous gardens, 40 ft waterfall, 20 min from airport. 15 acres of private forest. Internet access. 3+ bedrooms 2 1/2 bath, office. Beautiful kitchen. Driver available. Gardener can help take you to the waterfall on the property. Great local restaurants, look at airbnb guidebook. Early check in possible some days, $10 fee given to guard so they come early. Read the airbnb house manual for good tips, very important!
Santa Fe style home, with rare recycled woods. Acres of beautiful gardens, view of valley. Smell of jasmine and gardenias. 15 acres of included forest and 40ft waterfall, yet only 20 min to airport! Mi Kiva was designed by a famous architect that created very warm feeling by using recycled rare rosewood and other wood and 100+ year old tile in some locations to add texture and visual interest. Mi Kiva has a sensory surprise around every corner, and is super relaxing.
Other neighboring beautiful executive homes form a close-knit neighborhood. Safe, no crime. Many neighbors have purchased acres of forest across the creek/river. In addition to our 15 acres, the others combine to be some of the last original forest in the area so close to San Jose. Mi Kiva sits on 2 acres with executive homes bordering with similar lot sizes. There is a small bridge that gives access to the adjoining Mi Kiva owned property that has paths and is rain forest. Poas and La Paz Waterfall gardens nearby. With cautious speeds 45 minutes drive. Zip lining and hiking available on Barva, or hike the property.
  • The property exceeded our expectations. Gerald called to check in once we arrived and made sure everything was taken care of. The house had a rustic charm and was very peaceful and private. The gardens were incredible, and I'd definitely recommend the hike to the waterfall on the property. Overall a great value and experience.

  • Great property with a authentic feel to it! Host was very responsive to my requests.... The gardens are out of this world... they stretch to the river side. Never been to such a tranquil setting before. Thank you

  • the place is simple gorgeous. the architecture is great, and its surrounded by lots of lush vegetation and beautiful gardens. very peaceful and quiet, the place is highly recommendable. for the price, you are getting way much more...and if you want to experience a greener side of costa rica instead of going to a regular hotel, this is the place. would book again in a heartbeat.

  • Gerald was very helpful in communicating over email and very responsive. We had a quick welcome call once we arrived. Mi Kiva is a beautiful and unique place. The yard and the path in the back is really beautiful with an awesome view over the valley into the city lights. It was great for New Year's to see all the fireworks, too! Don't miss some star gazing and smelling the scents in the evening. As it was just the two of us, the house was big and we did not use the whole right side of the home. We enjoyed the Master bedroom and large dining room the most on the inside. We had one ride from Maikol, who is also the guard back into San Jose to pick up our luggage and car (travel delays) which was $28 US. Maikol was kind and we navigated the conversations in broken Spanish and English. Honest feedback: There is a definite uniqueness and charm to being at this place, and there was a higher price due to staying during the holiday period. That higher value did not seem to be commensurate with the place/experience compared to other places that I have been to during the holiday season.

  • What an amazing house!!! Just beautiful. Wish we could have stayed longer. Gerald was very helpful with my one hundred questions :)

  • Amazing home with gardens that are indeed magical! We had an amazing first stay at Gerald's place and will definitely be back! We had a little difficulty finding the place in the dark but Gerald was super helpful and communicative. And it was a blessing in disguise as we found some really friendly locals at Cafe D'Cocko who helped us out and also made us dinner! The best part was the walk down to the river through the magical gardens where my honey proposed and I said "yes"!! This will be a very special place for us forever and I can't wait to return for our next visit. Best advice I can give is stay at least a few days to fully enjoy all Mi Kiva had to offer!

  • Gerald's place was truly magical. My family of four stayed at Gerald's on our last stop prior to our return flight home out of SJO. Before arriving at Gerald's we stayed at both high-end resorts in Bajos Del Toro and Tabacon as well as hipster beachside villas in Montezuma. During that time we saw and did any number of amazing things, and yet we were still absolutely blown away by Gerald's property. The hacienda itself is spacious, almost having a quietly palatial feel, and the grounds are simply unbelievable. Because we had already done our share of eco-touring, we passed on what we understood was an amazing site in the La Paz waterfall and opted, instead, for a tasting experience at the Sibo artisinal chocolate facility about 50 mins away. If you like chocolate, you have to make this tour. Gerald was extremely responsive and helpful in arranging transportation for us with Miguel since we had already returned our rental car before arriving. We highly recommend Gerald's place for a stay of any length. Cheers Gerald.

  • My wife, 2 year old daughter, my mother in-law and sister in-law, and I all stayed at Mi Kiva for 3 nights. We unfortunately were disappointed with our stay. The house and grounds around the house are beautiful. The fauna that abounds around the placeis impressive. Sadly these things were overshadowed by continual problems with things in house. For about half our stay we did not have working water in the house due to multiple issues (lack of water pressure, water pump not working, and the water tank being empty or to low). We also found the microwave filthy, the refrigerator dirty, and the main guest toilet seat not secured to the toilet. Also we never had hot water in the master bathroom our kitchen during our stay. Due to the water issues I probably talked to Gerald on the phone about 7 times, and after that messaged back and forth. My wife and I live in Costa Rica and had it just been us we probably could have over looked some of these issues, or been less frustrated by them. But my wife's family was only in Costa Rica only 6 days (the only time we see them in about 2 years) so when several of those days were filled with the rental frustrations it was a let down. Also paying $190 a night we expect to have a frustration free experience. We stayed here instead of our house in San José in hopes of enjoying a very peaceful place to rest and relax with our family, unfortunately that's not what we got. Things happen and from seeing all the positive reviews of this place I would say this was a fluke incident where everything just went wrong at the same time. Gerald was always helpful when we talked, but unfortunately our relationship went south when we explained all our frustrations and asked to be refund for 1/2 our stay (he had offered 1 night refund and an additional night stay free without us asking). We eventually got a resolution, but it took getting Airbnb getting involved and some inappropriate things were said by Gerald I thought were unbecoming and unprofessional as a host.

  • Surf Vista Villas was wonderful. I highly recommend it. The house was beautiful, peaceful and well maintained; the staff was friendly, helpful and responsive. The other guests were very sweet, and the view couldn't be beat! We loved the location - a little out of the hubbub of downtown, byt only a 10 minute walk to the closest grocery and restaurant (Soda), and 20 minute walk on the beach to the heart of downtown. Walk to the ocean in 10 minutes. Yes, there is a BIG hill to walk up to get to the lodge -- you probably want a car if you have small children or don't like walking hills. We walked it 2-4 times a day, and it was fine. I have buns of steel now ;) Thank you to Andy, Juan, Juan and the rest of the staff at Surf Villa Vistas!

  • If you are looking at the pictures and thinking "I would love to go there" ... you should. Surf Vista Villas are even more beautiful than the website photos and it was a perfect home base to visit and enjoy Santa Teresa in every way. The rooms are wonderful and the views achingly beautiful. I cannot imagine a better spot for sunset. Andy made everything very easy and is incredibly responsive. I had an amazing stay! Thanks so much Andy. I cannot wait to come back!

  • Surf Vista Villa's was exactly what I had hoped for. The views are amazing! Very peaceful, unless you are treated to a wake up call by Howler Monkeys, which is an experience in and of itself. The rooms were well kept, and spacious, and the bathroom as well. Andy was a great host who gave us some needed advice when asked, and otherwise let us keep to ourselves. I will be going back as often as i can!

  • We stayed at Andrews apartment for two days and could have stayed more. It was a wunderfull place and a view from the terrace that you will not see many places with silence and the only sound is the ocean that yoy see and the animals from the trees. It is worth millions and you get this for a very good price. I will come back here for sure, and have a pura vida experience again. I could live there for always - if you want a piece of heaven - book it!! You can walk to the beach eventhough it is a bit steep, but that is just exercise. Thank you Andrew

  • The Surf Vista is an absolutely amazing stay. Andrew, the owner, and all of his staff members were very helpful and super nice. We stayed in the unit that had the kitchen outside and LOVED it. It was so nice to cook and eat while enjoying the ocean breeze and view. The geckos were a wonderful source of entertainment once the sun went down. They would hang out by the lights hunting moths and smal bugs. The sound of the Holler monkeys is what I miss the most. Sometimes the monkeys would hang out on the treetops right next to the deck. Eveny morning an elegant little blue bird would come by and sit near us while we ate breakfast. At first we thought we could walk up and down the hill during our stay, but the hill is steep, so we ended up renting a few quads. This worked out great, they are so much fun to ride! It also made it easier to get groceries and water. The location of the Surf Villa is ideal. It is high up away from the noise of town and has the best view. At the same time it is not so far from anything. I would highly recommend this wonderful Villa and when we return to Costa Rica (which I surely hope we do!) we will try to stay here again. Many thanks!

  • Wonderful place. Highly, highly recommend it to anyone looking to venture to this area. It's better than the photos, it's stunning, relaxing, peaceful, everything you'd want when spending time in the area.

  • My girlfriend and I had an awesome week at Andy's place. It really is as great as the pictures make it look. Andy was very helpful and super communicative. We got simple to follow instructions on how to get there from Liberia, and also how to get to San Jose when we left. Andy wasn't there while we stayed, but Juan was and he was super helpful and friendly and a nice guy. We actually found out during our stay that we had to leave a day early and Andy was great about it, giving us a refund for the extra night even though he wouldn't be able to rent it to someone else at such short notice. Thanks Andy, you are a legend! You should stay here if you come to Santa Teresa, it's a great place. If you stay, a 4x4 is a great idea as the access road is majorly steep (hence the great views). Rooms are big and have a couple of beds so could fit a bunch of people, but was very comfy for the two of us. We were upstairs, and the 'common' area of the deck was so pretty and great place to relax after a day of surfing. Hammocks and the house dog were also awesome. We grilled fish on the bbq a few nights which was perfect. Definitely recommend this place and would stay here again! You won't regret it.

  • We had an amazing time at Santa Teresa Surf Villas. Andy has an amazing location with an unbelievable view. He was more than accommodating, and took care of us the whole time. When our flight back was cancelled, we were able to extend our reservation no problem. I would HiGHLY recommend to anyone looking for a relaxed experience in Costa Rica.

Cabina Blanca - tucked away at the top of a gated community with lovely views of the Pacific ocean, the beach a short walk and the towns of Tamarindo and Flamingo only 25 min. away. Roomy, queen bed, private patio.
This space is a completely self contained guest house, about 15 feet away from the main house. With an abundance of natural light, this unique oasis is cozy and inviting with high ceilings. Although not air conditioned, the cabina enjoys an elevated position on the site and is orientated to take advantage of breezes. In the room, there are ceiling and pedestal fans.
We feel very safe in our gated community, tucked away from the "hustle and bustle" of some of the nearby towns, but still close enough to enjoy all the area has to offer. This relaxing atmosphere is great for bird watching and animal visitors, walks or just enjoying the pool. We are central to enjoy all the coast has to offer with 19+ beaches within less than one hour drive. The closest beach, Playa Conchal, is an easy 10-12 minute walk away or even shorter drive. It has gentle waves making it perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Playa Minas and Bahia de Los Piratos are 2 other beautiful beaches a 5 minute drive away. Matapolo is the closest town to us. It is a 5 minute drive away and has a couple of restaurants and grocery stores. Tamarindo is 25 mins south of us and Flamingo is 25 mins north. Both are an easy drive for taking in the restaurants, shops and services.
  • Once I followed all the signs to get to the property, it was simple with the use of a 4x4!!! Kim's adorable cabina was very comfortable and the surroundings were very neat... She has a guidebook that can refer you to beaches, I highly recommend playa zapatillal!? I think thats the name and its 4min drive from her spot. Thank you!!

  • We enjoyed our stay at the cabina. It was located within walking distance to 2-3 beaches that weren't crowded. The basic kitchen tools were very helpful and allowed us to save some money and eat in (wine and cheeses on the upstairs patio is extremely relaxing). Kim and Tim are so nice and the binder Kin put together is full of useful suggestions. I would recommend this location!!

  • This room is just a short trip to the local beaches. Easy 30 min drive to Tamarindo and 45 min to Avellanas. Kim’s directions are spot-on for getting you from the airport to her place - follow them! The room itself is all you need for a short stay at the beach, nothing fancy. Good views from the roof.

  • LOTS of bugs that will crawl and sting on you while sleeping at this place. They told us we could use their pool but after seeing it we passed since it wasn't clean at all. We found glass on the porch (not a lot but still) and being the bed you had the full jungle with spiders etc... We found much better value by talking to people who rented a condo to use for the same price But with AC, 2bedrooms, full kitchen, Landry machines and HOT water.

  • We had a great stay with Tim and Kim. A bit tricky to find the place and it's a few minutes drive from stores and restaurants, but on the other hand, it's an easy walk (10-12 min) to Playa Conchal, one of the nicest beaches around. Tim and Kim were incredibly nice and welcoming, as well as very responsive. We went next door to their place almost every day to use the pool and ended up having lots of nice chats, as well as a couple of friendly visits with the neighborhood coatis. The cabina itself is very cute. It's a small, bright place with everything you need and very clean. I would definitely recommend a stay.

  • It was a great experience, the house is a little, safe and cozy place. It has the perfect space for you to stay, cook, etc. the hostesses Tim, Kim (and Dough) are great people. Ice creams from Kim are delicious. The only detail you have to consider is that if you're driving have in mind that the last 6 -7 kilometers are over dirty road. A sedan or coupe shouldn't have any issue while dry, but if raining or if your are picky with your car, please have this in mind.

  • Tim and Kim were extremely welcoming and friendly hosts. They provided us with great information about the area upon arrival and gave us more activities and things to do than we could possibly hope accomplish while there!. They did everything they could to make us feel at home and welcome!

  • Kim and Tim are fantastic hosts and the apartment is quite comfortable. They provided plenty of information on things to do in the area. The place is located within a 10-15 minute walk to the beach (which is absolutely beautiful) and about a 45-60 min walk to Brasilito (great place for breakfast - definitely try the Sodas there). We were there during some strong heat and humidity, so it took some acclimating to get comfortable at night. The rainy season was playing havoc with the road getting there though, so take your time. The directions they provided were exactly what was needed, they are off the beaten track a little. Have a solid 4x4 if you intend to drive out. But if you do make the drive, it is very much worth the effort. Making the effort to get to Playa Minas is also worth the trip.

Full apartment, just five minutes walk to museums, National Theater, and central Market, you can also enjoy typical costarican food restaurants and coffee shops in the neighborhood . If you are going to the beach and volcanoes , it is located just 1 hour and 20 min. to Jaco Beach and fifty minutes to the Poás Volcano. You will love my place it has lots of light, a beautiful mountain view, comfortable bed and fully equipped kitchen. Perfect for couples, families on vacation. Self check in.
Studio apartment, with full size bed and a pull over couch for an extra guest, internet and cable tv. Ideal if you come for vacation, and want to make one day trips to the mountains or to the beach, its also perfect for your first or las nights in Costa Rica, so you can get the feeling of busy down town, or if you come for medical turism it is about 15 minute cab drive to most hospitals. Located on the 5th floor, there is elevator, it has a great view of the mountains to the north side of town, and its located very close to all main museums and attractions in the heart of San Jose.
The place is located in the heart of the city and there is much traffic and people around the neighborhood specially in week days. San José is a very busy city, it gets very crowded during the day and at night it is calm, you need to take this into consideration. Although we are a small country every day in San José more then one million people go through the city on transit to work , school or hospitals, many located in the great metropolitan area. The apartment is located near hotels, restaurants, parks and a five minute walk to all the museums (Gold, Jade, National, Art) . Like any city that you are getting to know you should never be over confident, when you arrive I will be more than happy to give you instructions so you can get around, and you can also find instructions right here if you read " Getting Around" (Guidebook). The place is just three blocks away from central avenue where you can find all the museums, restaurants and nice shops, it is a nice street walk!... There you can see the beautiful National Theater, on calle 2 , you will find the Mail Building, both are "most see" land marks in San José. You might want to go take a peak at the Hotel Costa Rica, which is the first hotel built in San Jose in the early 1900's, walk a bit west on second avenue and you will find the Cathedral and Central Park, on the right the beautiful Melico Salazar theater. You can also find very nice souvenir shops just a couple of blocks away. The Jade Museum, is a most if you like museums!!... It is within a 5 minute walk.
  • Marie was an excellent host! My husband and I flew in super late and didn't get to her place until around 230 am, but she was there and didn't mind our late (Website hidden by Airbnb) was very nice. The place is in be middle of down town and close to everything. Very clean apartment. we had a wonderful time :)

    Mary Beth2015-02-08T00:00:00Z
  • The apartment is a great size and complete with everything you might need for a comfortable stay! We wish we were able to stay longer to explore the area better but is located right in the hub of downtown San Jose. Marie was unable to meet us however her handyman was there to greet us and make sure everything was just right - an easy arrival and departure, he was very obliging... Oh and the bedding is super comfortable!!

  • The unit is as advertised. We were only there one night before flying out and had asked Marie before hand if parking was an issue. She had assured us there was local parking. The reality was that most of the lots were expensive ($2-5/hour) and/or closed on Sunday (the day we flew out). I asked Marie for help with the parking since few Costa Ricans speak English. She reluctantly helped to confirm the first lot was a mistake but wouldn't help with the second, saying "I'm not a tourist guide". We did find a lot closer and manged to use (Hidden by Airbnb) translate with the attendant but the experience and attitude displayed by Marie was not very hospitable to say the least. Although the apartment is very nice, this area of San Jose is pretty scuzzy.

  • We were only here one night but it was a lovely apartment with some really nice touches like biscuits and juice. And Maria ,her daughter and Juan one of her staff were great even went looking for ear plugs!!

  • Marie's San Jose apartment was absolutely beautiful. It was nestled close to the heart of San Jose and provided an excellent opportunity to embrace the ebbs and flows of the city. The apartment was secure and we appreciate Marie's kindness and consideration as she provided snacks in the apartment and provided advice on our travel. You will not go wrong staying in this beautiful home away from home.

  • The description of the apartment in downtown San Jose, Costa Rica was precise. Marie mentioned that one shouldn't waste your time outside the city when you can get a central place in town. Marie was great at returning questions within 24 hours. The apartment was perfect, it had a great view of the volcano. We were able to walk to all the museums that we wanted to. Two recommendations: for meals go to El Patio, then the Jade Museum and then outside for the venders in the back for nice local products to take home to friends.

  • Marie was extremely helpful & accommodating. We had arrived late & she was there to meet us & show us around upon arrival. The place was very clean & we had a great night sleep!

  • Host was very responsive and extremely nice. Directed me where to park and saved me from angry driver. She made me feel safe.

Experience Costa Rica in this zen-like modern home surrounded by 40-acres of tropical forest, across from one of the most beautiful palm-lined beaches in Costa Rica! Watch toucans and many other exotic birds from the deck, or take a nature tour around a small lake that is home to the famous Basilisk or 'Jesus Christ' lizard, as well as turtles, tiger-throated herons, and spectacled caiman. The property is centrally located close to markets, restaurants, and national parks. Pura Vida!
Nestled on a hill off the Costanera, this modern home appeals to those who appreciate nature and simple design. Although the home is built with exposed concrete and has a minimalist feel, it is surrounded by natural landscaping and has magnificent views of the surrounding area. The home has an open floor-plan consisting of the living room, dining room, and kitchen upstairs, which leads to a private deck. Downstairs is the laundry and guest bathroom, which connects to the outdoor shower area and three bedrooms.
Playa Bejuco is home to one of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica! It is perfect for surfing, horseback riding, or simply enjoying one of the most awe-inspiring sunsets you've ever seen. There are some great restaurants within a mile from the property and many others in the towns of Jaco, Quepos, and Manuel Antonio. We are always happy to recommend our favorites!
  • Rosie's house is BEAUTIFUL and just as pictured - very clean and modern. We only stayed in Esterillos for two nights, so we kept saying how we just wanted to stay longer thanks to the beautiful house and property. The house is equipped with everything you could need or want and then some. Rosie was very communicative and even called us down to see a sloth since she knew our daughters wanted to see one up close.

  • We had a great time at Rosie's. She and her Husband were helpful and the place was a great!

  • The house was quite lovely, just about as pictured. Rosie and Bruno were fantastic hosts! They were very swift to respond to questions or issues and were so helpful with providing a list of things to do. They also offer surfing lessons! My friend and I spent several hours learning to surf and it was definitely a highlight! We actually were able to get up and ride a few waves thanks to Bruno and Rosie! The area is beautiful, the beaches were amazing and the people were so friendly. Definitely a great trip!

  • Rosie's place was the best! The drive from the airport was surprisingly easy, I'm glad she recommended getting a hot spot because we had no issues at all. Esterillos is a very cute town and the city center had several good restaurants and a fairly large grocery store. The house is beautiful! There were two sloths in a tree behind the house for our entire stay! The swimming pool was nice to relax after visiting the beach and the outdoor shower was lovely. Rosie even scheduled an ATV tour and ziplining for us (the ATV tour was definitely my favorite part of the trip)! Don't hesitate at all about booking here, it's amazing!

  • We had a great time staying here. Rosie is a lovely host who went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed, even going shopping for us when we were delayed arriving. The house itself is amazing - great architecture with a really relaxed feel set in beautiful grounds that you can explore if you want to, and the pool is great for cooling off and spotting the local wildlife. We used the house as a base to explore this part of the Pacific coast, from Manuel Antonio right up to Monteverde, as well as surfing lessons with Bruno (Rosie's husband) in Jaco - highly recommended! Although the house is set back and above the nearby road there can be some noise from passing vehicles at times (I should say that we were there during the particularly busy Christmas holidays period though) so if this kind of thing bothers you and are looking for absolute peace and quiet this place might not be for you. However, if you're looking for a cool place in a lovely setting with great hosts as a base to explore the surrounding area then you'll love it - we did!

  • We had a wonderful stay at Rosie's place! Our stay exceeded expectations. The property was gorgeous and the pool was the cherry on top! Rosie was great communicating. We had some unexpected issues on our arrival date and Rosie was flexible. Rosie was very helpful with recommendations and helped us make arrangements for Ocean Ranch Park (which I also highly recommend)! The home was spacious and in a good location to head just about any directions on the coast.

  • I can't say enough about how awesome Los Laureles was. Rosie and Bruno were so accommodating and helpful throughout the week. The house was AMAZING! So beautiful and so so peaceful. It's even nicer than the pictures! The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you would need, there's a washer and dryer in the house and they provide fresh sheets and towels which was great! The house was much larger than we thought it would be, and very clean. The pool was great to come home to and was kept very clean. The deck was my favorite part! My husband and I laid on the lawn chairs and watched the stars at night and watched toucans off the deck during the day. I really can't say enough about the house or the area in general. The property was beautiful and so well kept. It was so peaceful and felt secluded but it was so close to nightlife and restaurants and the beautiful beach. All of our excursions were only 15 minutes to an hour away! The first day we explored the property, which was an adventure in itself! They have fresh fruits and veggies growing on the property - star fruit, bananas and much more. We saw sloths, cayman, turtles, toucans and lizards and got to enjoy fresh coconut water, which Bruno cut down and gave to us! On the second day we explored Playa Bejuco at low tide. We walked through the mangroves and collected shells. Afterwards, we went to lunch at Hotel Pelicano - food was amazing and steps away from beach. We swam in the ocean for a bit and saw lots of mana rays! Throughout the rest of the trip, we went zip lining with Canapy Safari in Quepos (awesome,) horseback riding to the Nauyaca waterfalls (definitely recommend) and visited Rainmaker and Manuel Antonio (both so amazing.) Rosie was so helpful in booking excursions for us and also gave us advice on where to go/what times to visit. We did go kayaking through the mangroves with Damas Kayak Tours, which I booked on my own. It was cool, but I wish I would have asked Rosie prior to booking because I think the tours she was familiar with would have been better:) We will definitely be visiting Los Laureles in the future. It was an amazing experience and I highly recommend! Perfect honeymoon spot, but it would also be great for a family vacay or just a nice getaway!

  • Rosie's place was amazing. She was extremely helpful leading up to the trip with suggestions and planning tips for us. The layout of the house was fantastic and every bit as good as expected. The pool was amazing and having it all to ourselves every day was definitely a highlight. The property the house is on is beautiful and we saw tons of tropical birds and iguanas roaming around. There are caymans in the lake next to the house which were fun to see. The house is just very a short drive from a beautiful beach lined with trees and shade, and we actually started our morning run from the house and ran down to the beach every day. The house is conveniently and centrally located in a great spot on the coast. We had dinner in Jaco or Esterillos most nights, and spend our days exploring the coast to the south. I'd definitely recommend Rosie's place if you're looking for a quiet place with your own private pool to relax in after a day of exploring. It's not walkable to any restaurants or bars, but we enjoyed the privacy and having the pool to ourselves. Definitely recommended!

Beautiful & very private 'eco-luxury' retreat near South Pacific Coast. Our unique & stunning location offers guests panoramic sea views & hangs dramatically over the jungle canopy. Romantic getaway, nature lovers and adrenalin junkies paradise!
WELCOME to Pura Vida Ecolodge, a unique 'eco-luxury' award-winning retreat nestled amongst virgin rain forest just 5 km from the volcanic sands of the Pacific Ocean in Central America's Costa Rica. The ecolodge been awarded with a 'Certificate of Excellence' every year since opening by TripAdvisor, was designed by award winning Architect Franco Casalvolone (FCB Arquitectura) and has been awarded with the Airbnb 'Super Host' badge for the last four consecutive seasons as well! This is the place for guests who want to disconnect, be ‘off-grid’ and get away from it all. It’s for those of you who have a sense of adventure, are up for trying something new, enjoy bumpy and steep roads in a 4x4 (not AWD) and who, come rain or shine, won’t let the weather stop them from doing what they want. It’s an adrenalin junkies paradise, perfect for those who want to wake up to the sounds of monkeys, trek through the jungle and jump in a freshwater plunge pool all before breakfast! It’s for the nature lovers among you who will no doubt discover animals of all shapes and sizes throughout their stay both on our lodge’s doorstep and with perhaps, the occasional smaller visitor inside. It's for the venturesome globetrotter who doesn't mind the occasional cold shower when the solar panel doesn't get enough sun or the intense heat or humidity as the season dictates. It’s for new age travellers who are ready to respect, accept and embrace a different and more laid back culture than perhaps they’re used to ‘back home’. It’s for those of you that are happy with less and don't constantly strive for more more more, as we’ve tried to incorporate the ‘pure life’ lifestyle that Costa Rica’s Zona Sur offers in abundance into the design of our lodge, so it’s the perfect getaway for those who are ready to arrive with their minds and eyes wide-open, for guests that seek romance, beauty, fun and adventure. This is, as they say, the ‘real' Costa Rica as our beautiful and breezy location, at an altitude of just over 300 meters and with over 3 acres of private land, boasts stunning panoramic sea views over the lush valleys towards the meandering 'Rio Terraba' and directly faces the Pacific Ocean, Costa Rica's spectacular sunsets and the world famous National Parks - Isla del Caño & Osa Peninsula. The most magical times are the early mornings and late afternoons where you can sit back with a freshly made juice or a glass of wine and be a spectator of nature with monkeys, pizotes, parrots and toucans all frequently visiting the lodge and it's surrounding reserve. Pura Vida Ecolodge is a peaceful sanctuary to experience and embrace the 'Pura Vida' (Pure Life). LOCATION & ACTIVITIES - At the same time as being near local beaches, restaurants and other tourist attractions, Pura Vida Ecolodge's location is both remote and private and the retreat itself will provide you with all sorts of adventures and experiences. We have our own nature trails, waterfalls & natural plunge pools both near the ecolodge & on the edge of the Pura Vida Ecolodge Reserve - the easiest trail starts right by the ecolodge, with more challenging treks on the edge of the reserve just a short up-hill walk (300m) from the lodge. Your adventure can be as extreme or relaxing as you choose with a plethora of natural swimming pools, waterfalls and rock faces to explore! Whether you are honeymooners, a group of friends or a large family of 7, you will have the entire ecolodge just to yourselves. We have also planted lots of trees, so please be our guests and pick any of the fruits they are all obviously 100% organic! If you venture off any of the paths, take your boots and maybe a hiking pole. We are just a 10-15 minute drive (depending on season, road conditions and of course your 4x4 driving skills) from the Costa Nera Highway allowing guests to easily explore the area with day trips to two of Costa Rica's most popular national parks (Manuel Antonio & Corcovado), stunning beaches (Playa Arco, Tortuga y Ventanas are our three favourites) and our concierge service can help with tours and boat trips, trekking options, scuba diving & snorkelling trips, kayaking, stand up paddling, surfing, hiking, mountain biking, canyoning, canopy lines and horse riding etc. The nearby village of Ojochal (just 5 minutes up the Costa Nera) is one of a few local villages hosting a whole load of fine dining and fusion restaurants or if you'd prefer to relax 'at home' we can happily arrange home-cooked 'tico' meals, food parcels (according to the season, fresh fish, ceviche and seafood all available) and fruit baskets to be delivered direct to the Jungle Villa. ECO-TRAVEL - Eco-travel in Costa Rica is your ticket to explore a plethora of amazing places that care just as much about the environment as they do about their guests. It's a country where 'organic' is as important as 'stylish', and the government plans to make it the world's first carbon-neutral country by 2021. ‘Pura vida' is Costa Rica's national motto, and for good reason. It's a real paradise: Our guests can enjoy the 'pure life' in some of the world's most bio-diverse jungles, rain forests and coastlines. The country's book-ended by beaches on its Pacific and Caribbean sides (hence the laid-back surfer ethos that characterizes coastal life) and inland, nature holds way: a full quarter of Costa Rica is protected land, from the smouldering volcanoes to dense jungles. In the highlands, farms and plantations produce delicious tropical fruit – as well as some of the finest coffee ever to grace your espresso PURA VIDA ECOLODGE FAQs: - WILL I NEED A 4x4 CAR? Yes, our retreat is situated 5km from the coast and the village of Coronado on a well maintained gravel road into the coastal mountains. A 4WD car is necessary (not AWD more notes in welcome pack). There is a convenience store or “soda" as they are called in Costa Rica, at the Coronado junction, where you can get the majority of your groceries and supplies. For supermarkets, restaurants/bars, beaches, bigger stores, etc. you would require transportation to the local towns of Ojochal (5 mins), Uvita (15 mins) up the Costa Nera Highway. Several taxi services are available but you cannot beat the independence of having your own 4WD. Driving time from San Jose is around 3.5 hours. Full details & directions in welcome pack TIP: Bring coins and change from the US or change colones for the highway tolls! - WHO SHOULD I RENT OUR 4WD WITH? We have been working with Vamos Rent-a-Car since we opened. They speak English and they have various offices around the country (Near San Jose Airport and Dominical amongst others). They will meet you off your flight or even at your hotel if you're setting off early in the morning. Be sure to mention us and Pura Vida Ecolodge to get the best prices & treatment. You should allow around an hour for vehicle collection and paperwork. - IS THERE SOMEONE IN COSTA RICA WHO CAN ASSIST ME WHILE I AM THERE? Yes, once you book Pura Vida Ecolodge, you will be sent the welcome pack which includes all the details of our housekeeper and his wife, who together with myself and Kika, will double up as your 'concierge service' leading up to and throughout your stay. Though our housekeepers are Spanish speaking only, they are very knowledgeable on the area and will be there at checkin & checkout and can help you throughout your stay with anything you might need. I'm sorry we cannot be there but you'll be in very good hands, Gersan & Ili are practically family! - IS THERE A BEACH NEARBY THAT IS EASY TO GET TO? Yes, in fact you are really quite spoilt for choice. Playa Tortuga is the nearest and possibly one of our favourites. Once down at the Costa Nera, it is just a 5 minute drive up the coast. A short drive further up the coast takes you to Playa Piñuelas, Playa Ventanas and then the stunning national park of Marina Ballena and Uvita. Full directions (including which beaches are best for swimming and surfing etc is included in your welcome pack). -HOW EASY IS IT TO FIND PURA VIDA ECOLODGE? Upon confirming your reservation, we send all our guests a welcome pack with very clear directions including photos of landmarks along the way. This is updated monthly as we aim to give all our guests as up-to-date info and recommendations as possible -ARE THERE RESTAURANTS AND SHOPPING NEARBY? Ojochal is the nearest town with a really good selection of fine & casual dining. You can find Fusion, Italian, Asian, “Typical Costa Rican," even a deli/bakery and a handful of great fruit smoothie and ceviche places. Further up the coast there is Uvita, again with a good balance of International and 'local' options. We include a full list of recommendations (both restaurants & bars) in the welcome pack. For shopping, you may wish to visit the bustling tourist town of Manuel Antonio (50-60 minutes drive north) which has souvenir, jewellery, and art/craft shops and many lively restaurants (we recommend a trip to Manuel Antonio, anyway, for the national park, which a lot of our guests do either on the way down or on the way back up to San Jose. -ARE THERE EXCURSIONS & ACTIVITIES CLOSE BY? Yes, yes, yes! Again, you can find more details on the Pura Vida Ecolodge web site, but there are spectacular waterfalls, nature trails and plunge pools right in the reserve itself. The surrounding area offers world class scuba diving, snorkelling, zip-lining, boat tours, mangrove tours, hiking, stand-up paddling, horseback tours, canyoning, as well as being located between the country's best national parks (Corcovado & Manuel Antonio) and a 20 minute drive from Marina Ballena National Park. There are dozens of picturesque, quiet beaches all the way up and down the Southern Pacific coast, with enough activities and adventures on offer to do something completely different every day! We can also recommend great day trips to the Osa Peninsula, Sierpe and Nuayaca Falls amongst others and an overnight option to Mt Chirripo is incredible if you have the time. For surfers, Playa Dominical has a famous left and right beach surf break, and waves 95% of the year. Closer to the lodge, Playa Tortuga and Ventanas often have good waves more for beginners or if you're after an almost private beach and wildlife experience, you can have breakfast or lunch at La Cusinga and then explore the different monkey colonies. if you're lucky you might spot some Red Scarlet Macaws and guests also regularly see lots of toucans and different types of parrots. The 10-min walk through the jungle down to Playa Arco is well worth the trek! -IS IT A QUIET NEIGHBOURHOOD? Yes, Pura Vida Ecolodge is the best of both worlds. While being a completely private retreat and reserve (both the house, pool and the surrounding nature trails) with it's orientation meaning that the property literally hangs over the jungle canopy on one side and directly faces the Pacific coast on the other, you will have a handful of neighbours nearby in the slowly growing community if you wanted a friendly chat or even some more tips on the area. -IS THERE A GROCERY STORE NEARBY? There is a good little 'pulperia' (small local store) on the crossroads at Coronado (around 5km away) that will most likely have most things you would need. There is also a great fish/seafood place just 1 km from the Coronado junction. For larger shopping, there are two big supermarkets ( as well as a really good Pharmacy) in Uvita, about 15 minutes up the coast -DOES THE ECOLODGE HAVE INTERNET AND CAN I PURCHASE A LOCAL CELL NUMBER? Yes, the house is equipped with WiFi/hotspot for internet connection and you can even purchase a sim card for around $4 (around 2000 colones) by the luggage claim in the airport, you just need a passport. Sim card is technically free as you can use all of the funds with calls. While cellphone signals have greatly improved in the country, there are some spots around Coronado that don't have reception but there is consistently good signal in and around Pura Vida Ecolodge. Please note that while the WIFI/hotspot is fine for emails and checking the news, (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) etc, please don’t expect to be able to stream movies as it's only 3G speed max. -WHAT IS THE WEATHER LIKE? A more detailed description of Costa Rica's seasons can be found on the Pura Vida Ecolodge web site, but in general you can expect about 85+ degrees at the beach year round. The only difference in climate year round is that May-November is the "green," or rainy season, and December through March/April is the dry season. The temperature up at the Ecolodge is always a few degrees cooler because it is around 1000ft. elevation, and you get great mountain breezes. Likewise, because of its proximity to the equator, the sunrise is around 5-5.30am with the sunsetting at 5.30-6pm. The ‘Green season's' rains are quite welcoming, it's always hot and the partial clouds and afternoon rains are soothing. Typically the rains start on the mountains between 2-4pm, maybe a little later by beach. For us, the best times of the day are between 5-7am. The congo monkeys will wake you up, and it's the most glorious part of the day and besides you'll most likely be asleep by 8/9pm! It's amazing how quickly you'll adjustment! -DOES THE LODGE HAVE AC? In short no. But both bedrooms/suites have excellent ceiling fans (with 5-speed settings). Please note there are ceiling fans in the living room and kitchen area as well and the Ecolodge has been designed with your comfort in mind, with large-open plan living spaces, surrounded by sliding doors leading out onto the wrap around decks which mean there are lovely fresh sea-breezes throughout. -WILL I NEED TO BRING ANYTHING WITH ME? You need not bring any household items as all bedding, tableware, towels (for both inside and pool area), cookware etc are all provided. We also provide a wonderful fruit basket and some other local delicacies on arrival. Please bring beach towels and your personal items, and of course a sense of 'Pura Vida' adventure! -IS PURA VIDA ECOLODGE A PRIVATE LOCATION? Yes, not only is the location incredibly private but regardless of your group size, you will have the entire retreat (house and surrounding reserve) just to yourselves. A lot of our guests are honeymooners and couples, as well as groups of friends and entire families. Either way, whether you are 2 people or a group of 6 with kids, you will have the entire property to yourself. - IS COSTA RICA SAFE? In general Costa Rica is very safe, however petty crimes do happen especially by the beaches or touristy areas. Do not bring any valuables to Costa Rica with you and especially do not bring them with you to the beach. TIP: Leave the glove department open to indicate it's empty.
The neighbourhood offers guests peace and quiet and has an abundance of nature and stunning flora and fauna. You can wake with the sounds of the congo howler monkeys and watch the sunset as the toucans fly right by the house. There are nature trails and waterfalls just a short walk away plus plenty of adventures on Pura Vida Ecolodge's doorstep!
  • This is my second time staying here, and honestly it is one of my favorite places on earth— so much so that I left a few hours ago, and am already scheming about how soon I can come back.... and am tempted to give a bad review to help keep this place a secret! It is remote and that is exactly what I love about it! Waking up to the toucans, parrots, scarlet macaws and howler monkeys is amazing. I am not at all a morning person, yet slept on the couch so that I wouldn’t miss dawn - and woke up at 5:00 every morning because I was so excited to see what I could see. Lots of great birding, butterflies, (literally 🦋!) and other critters. This is not a good match for folks who are scared of nature in all its forms (for example, the green dart frogs hang out on the steps after the rain, there are geckos and anoles in the house, and the grasshoppers are the size of your hand), but the sunrises and sunsets cannot be beat! Also, the drive up the mountain can be intimidating— four wheel drive is a must, and I strongly recommend getting the higher end model. First time we stayed, we got stranded on the drive because our Jimmy didn’t have enough power for 3 people and the luggage. We got a Montero this time and had no troubles — but do listen to their guidance and get there before dark — 4 PM at the latest if you can. The drive from San Jose always takes longer than you plan. The house has what you need for basic cooking, pots, pans, glasses, flannel coffee maker and hot water pot, etc — which is good because it was better for us to have breakfast in, a big lunch out and then cook dinner in — especially because we didn’t want to miss sunset. Walking further up the road gives more great views. The pool and the outdoor showers are great. The 2 part guide to planning and staying in the house is everything you could ask for and more, and I spent hours each day looking at the wildlife guides in the house. I am absolutely in love with this place, and will be back as soon as I can swing it and will stay longer!

  • The Pura Vida ecolodge is a wonderful place, we really enjoyed it. Don't worry about getting there - it is easy to find and the drive up there is fun! We would also recommend going on the tour with Gersan, the beach is stunning and totally safe even for small kids.

  • We spent 6 nights in the lodge with our children (6 and 9) and we all loved it. The first day arrival by night was already the real adventure we were looking for: wild animals (toads, birds, bats...) on the road, climb the hill (4x4 is the only option), alone in the dark... Once there, we discovered this nice and well-designed paradise: the lodge is like on the pictures, the sound of the jungle on top! Eco life style: do not expect a quiet and luxurious place, but as mentioned in the description, a retreat / an experience. The sun rises at 5:30am and the life of the forest (monkeys, birds...) wakes up, it is ideal to observe the nature. The night is quite dark, you can see stars that are not visible close to cities. The lodge is equipped with everything you would expect from such a place (+ a bonus with the pool). The lodge is 25 mins drive to Uvita and 20 mins of the first beach (Tortuga, Ventanas, Ballena, Dominical... playas) and Marino Ballena NP . 1h drive to Manual Antonio NP and to Sierpe (good start point to go to Corcovado NP). Even if they are not present on-site, the hosts Joe & Kika are seriously and remotely taking care that everything goes well and their local friend Gersan is available to welcome you and in case of emergency. Great organization!

  • The lodge was wonderful and the views were incredible!! We loved the open air concept, hearing all the animals was amazing. Our two daughters loved the plunge pool. Between Joe & Kika and Gersan all of our questions were answered very quickly with a ton of helpful tips on beaches, restaurants and guided tours! The recommend using Vamos car rental and we had a great experience through them, we actually spoke with other people at the airport and all of them complained about their car rental company so I was glad we paid a little bit extra and had great service but more importantly a new dependable car. The drive up to the lodge is insane, bumpy and very steep but strangely after a few goes at it we became comfortable with it. If you are the type of person that wants to drive to town for a quick something, then this is not for you. For us it was part of the adventure and it made for a great memory! The lodge was stocked with everything we wanted and more. The only thing that we truly missed was a coffee pot, the lodge does have a bamboo pour over coffee maker but with three people drinking coffee each morning - it was a process. We would highly recommend the lodge, our daughters 8 and 5 loved of the wild life. There are no TVs, which in the end our girls loved the most because we would play card games every night! Thank you again for an amazing experience!

  • Don't hesitate to book your stay at Pura Vida Ecolodge. It is truly heaven on Earth and I am so grateful to have stayed there. We were much later with check in than we had planned and Gersan and Iliana were so gracious and kind even though we were very late. Iliana's home cooked meal was exactly what we needed! And, as many others have mentioned, the boat tour through the mangroves to Gersan's private beach is spectacular!

  • Pura Vida is remarkable. Wonderfully remote and private while within short beautiful drives to picturesque beaches and magnificent National Parks.

  • My husband and I spent three days of our honeymoon here and we're so glad we did! From the very start of our stay, we were welcome by Gersan and his wife with a home cooked Tico dinner which was one of the best meals we've ever had. After a long trip from the states and delayed flights that was exactly what we needed and really set the tone for the trip! Every little detail of the house is perfect from the shower, infinity pool, close by hiking trails to the hammock on the deck. We enjoyed ourselves. We also took Gersan's boat adventure which we highly recommend. As others have mentioned but the owners made it known that the road up to the house is rocky and requires 4x4. No complaints as we went into it expecting that and added to the adventure. Thanks for making our honeymoon so memorable!

  • What a perfect and secluded getaway. The house is so unique and the finishes are wonderful. The host and housekeeper were easy to communicate with and were so eager to help with anything we needed. Definitely get a meal made for you during your stay. So delicious! The wildlife and scenery were second to none. Definitely will be back!

  • Phil is an amazing host. He's very accessible and full of fun stories based on his experience rich life. The property is very well presented and the room is awesome. Nice hide away from the hustle and bustle of downtown San Jose, easy accesible with a car. Would thoroughly recommend staying here. Thanks Phil!

  • Phil is more then an exceptional host. He is a wealth of information on Costa Rica living. His ranch is stunning and offers views of the Valley. It is a perfect starting point for a Costa Rica vacation or as a home base for exploring the city. I would highly recommend his book, "Costa Rica, Now!" He is also an expert in Chinese Taoist Philosophy, and provides great conversation. After staying with Phil, we would call him our friend.

  • Phil was a great guy to work with. Very laid-back but also extremely helpful, both in advance and while I stayed there. His property was clean and beautiful. The road he lives on is gorgeous, and gradually becomes transitional forest as you approach the Braulio Carrillo National Park. A 20-30 minute ride to the airport, it is worth being in a relaxing environment outside the lower-lying city.

  • Phil's reviews already say it all. Wonderful experience.

  • Phil was awesome! My boyfriend and I wanted a cool spot near the airport for one night before the rest of our friends flew into SJO and we headed to Dominical. The coffee farm was a short taxi ride away and we were greeted by a friendly face and fresh coffee (they had just finished the batch the day before!). The room was everything we needed but the company was the best part. Phil talked us through best practices for car insurance, shared beers with us at Los Potreros, and gave us a tour around the extensive meditation gardens that he has worked so hard to build up. We took a walk nearby (as suggested on the laminated "things to do" sheet he left us in the room) that afternoon and saw some gorgeous views of country side juxtaposed with city and mountains in the background. We also happened upon this huge purple flower field....I wish I could show y'all pictures. Anyway...thanks Phil! Pura Vida!

  • Everything was great! The room and property were even better than expected! Phil was a great host! If we come back to Costa Rica again, we will surely be back here!

  • Phil was a gracious host, and the location of this listing is excellent. We stayed there our last night in Costa Rica, and the drive to the airport took about 45 minutes in rush hour traffic. The room adjoined the main house, and was quite comfortable. The grounds are beautiful, and are recommended for a morning stroll. A relaxing alternative to staying in a hotel.

  • Phil is a great host, very helpful and giving us the feeling to be more than guests. He knows a lot about Costa Rica and its culture and we enjoyed the conversations with him! We are very glad we met Phil as he made our stay in Costa Rica more authentic. We liked our stay with him so much that we decided to go there twice. Besides the great hospitality of Phil, you will find a very comfortable, clean, huge, safe apartment in a great location, overlooking San Jose. Highly recommended!

Stay in the middle of the rainforest with its abundant wildlife, in your own comfortable house. Just minutes from little fishermanvillage of Manzanillo (with small shops and restaurants) and the caribbean sea with its picture perfect beaches
Fascinating jungle experience in the middle of the Caribbean rainforest of Costa Rica! Our distinguished lodge on 16+ acres of private property is situated in the Gandoca Manzanillo wildlife refuge, with the beautiful Caribbean sea less then a mile away. You will stay in one of our comfortable, fully equipped houses on stilts. Experience the jungle like never before. Have the monkeys waiting outside your window as you wake up to the sounds of tropical birds singing (more than 100 species counted on our property). There are sloths, nosebears, other mammals, frogs, and so much more… Relax in the Costa Rican rain forest, drinking a good bottle of wine on your jungle porch. Have a massage, walk our private nature tracks or relax at the creek that runs through the property. Go on one of the many excursions we can arrange for you. Visit the picture perfect & quiet Caribbean beaches just a few minutes away! Venture into Cahuita National park or the Gandoca Manzanillo wildlife refuge. Enjoy a night out in the bustling beach town of Puerto Viejo (9 miles away). But most of all look forward to waking up in a jungle paradise that seems to have been created especially for you… El Arbol (the tree) is the creation of Jan Hein (designer and creator of the lodge) and Marjolein (counsellor and international marketer) from the Netherlands. We want to offer our guests comfort while at the same time they are being totally immerged in nature. The idea is to offer guests a pure, private and personal experience. We are nature lovers ourselves and we would like to show you and your loved ones nature as it can still be found on this planet. Enjoy nature without compromising on comfort. We believe that the natural beauty in the lay of the land is best left as it is, especially if one of your goals is seeing animals. This theory is proven by the abundant wildlife that visits our 16+ acre property every day. We continue to let nature work her magic. Landscaping is done only around houses and common areas. We have a natural path through our rainforest that we keep clean and accessible; the rest of the jungle remains untouched. Outdoor lighting is romantic but restricted to what is necessary for orientation, safety & security. El Árbol philosophy: Our philosophy is to create a unique and personalized jungle experience in the midst of complete comfort. Feel the mental and physical wellbeing that nature provides. We also place extra emphasis on being eco friendly and globally conscious. You as our guest take part in this process as 5% of your lodging fees will be donated to local charities. The houses are designed with style, the immediate environment, comfort and safety in mind. Our houses are beautifully and interestingly designed. They are built on poles so you have the feeling you you are living and sleeping in the treetops and have round shapes, rich colors and exciting features. Every house has its own jacuzzi from which you can see the jungle and its wildlife. The houses have a fully equipped kitchen, master bedroom, large living room with an extra sleeping sofa/bed, luxury bathroom, safe and all beds have the best orthopedic mattresses with good quality mosquito nets. Because of their design and the protection from the rainforest's canopy, the houses have a comfortable, cool climate. The houses have glass windows to keep insects out, although it would amaze you how many days and nights you will sit outside on your porch without being bothered by any of these little creatures to fully enjoy the sounds of the jungle. The houses are cleaned for you 1 time a week. Its an amazing experience, don't miss it. we hope to may welcome you, if the dates you want to stay are booked at this calendar , please look at our other airbnb listing as we have 2 equal houses for rent :)
  • An amazing experience in an amazing place. We had a fantastic visit at El Arbol. As described it is a perfect oasis in the middle of the jungle. Even better there is hot and running water and a beautiful jacuzzi tub looking out into the jungle! The junglehouses are just perfect- clean, cozy and well stocked with everything you need if you want to cook a nice meal. There is a spiral staircase up to the bed upstairs which is romantically enclosed in a net which kept the bugs out and allowed us to sleep with the windows open during our stay. You could hear lots of wildlife and howler monkeys every morning and there were lots of bats and other interesting creatures to watch from the balcony every evening. Even though the two jungle houses are side by side, they have been perfectly designed for privacy. Marilyn and her husband were fantastic hosts, inviting us inside when we had trouble with the internet from outside, making a fantastic suggestion for a nice valentines dinner and even offering to drive us out there! We did not have a car and Manzanillo is easily walkable in around 15 minutes. It's a bit pricey (~$15usd/ each way) to get into puerto viejo but we knew this before and all the taxi drivers knew where El Arbol was located which was quite helpful. We can't say enough about this wonderful spot and hosts and will definitely be back if we travel to the area in the future!

  • We had a great time in Marjolein's and Jan Hein's junglehouse. In the morning we watched the monkeys swinging from tree to tree and in the afternoon we chilled at the beautiful Carribean coast. It just took us a few minutes through the jungle to get to the beach. The junglehouse has a beautiful and very creative design which fascinated us during our entire stay and which made our time in Manzanillo even more perfect. After a long day out in the heat we always looked forward to our neat, cosy and very clean hideaway amidst the jungle. During our trip in Costa Rica we have been on several guided hikes but Marjolein and Jan Hein recommanded the best guide ever - don't miss a tour with Florentino. You will experience an explosion of smell, taste and virtual beauty. Further excellent recommandations by our hosts were two places to eat: Maxi's for lunch and the little Argentinian restaurant El Refugio for dinner - no chance without reservation.

  • What a fun, whimsical jungle house! We used the hot tub several times and Marilyn booked all of our amazing excursions so all we had to do was have fun! A true jungle experience while still being completely comfortable.

  • My three sisters and I visited El Arbol Feb. 1 - 4, 2015. The location was wonderful. We saw so much wildlife from our porch..Howler monkies, Toucans, giant, blue butterflies, and even a sloth. It was so beautiful. Marilyn is the perfect host. She is helpful, knowledgeable, but not intrusive. The cabin was clean, fun, and functional. Bugs were not the problem we anticipated, and sleeping under mosquito nets made us feel secure, but probably not necessary. If we ever come back to CR, we will stay longer at El Arbol. Thanks Marilyn and Jan! Sincerely, M. Carlson and sisters, Portland, Oregon, USA

  • El Arbol was everything I was looking for: quiet, abundant nature, sea and warmth. It is off the beaten track, but that's the point. The owner's were incredibly helpful and unit very clean. That deck chair in the pic is worth the trip alone. My favorite activity was swinging, listening and watching the jungle from the privacy of this special place.

  • We had an amazing 2 night stay in el Arbol. Within an hour of arriving we saw howler monkeys, humming birds and lots of frogs. The jungle house is beautiful and had everything we needed. It was very clean and Marilyn was really helpful and easy to communicate with. We would definitely recommend.

  • El Arbol is an oasis. The treehouse is BEAUTIFUL with a gorgeous porch, lofted bedroom, full kitchen, and a bathroom with a keyhole-shaped door. They were WONDERFUL hosts, helping us find activities, with directions, and with checking into our next AirBnB. Amazing place!!!

  • We loved this house! If you want a real jungle experience, this is the place! This house is unlike anything we had ever seen before. It had everything we needed to make it a comfortable stay. We were greeted by howler monkeys every time we walked to our house. They were so loud and funny! The house is located in a very secluded part of the jungle but is only about a 5 minute drive from Manzanillo and the beach. We also drove to Puerto Veijo on a daily basis and loved the scenery along the road. Wonderful people and family close by to help if we needed anything. Definitely would recommend and go back!

Loft style cabin in beautiful Playa Negra town. has a king size bed on the loft & bunk bed downstairs, walking distance to pristine beaches. trees and hammocks in the garden, in the most beautiful area in the country, forest and beautiful beaches, sunny everyday. Its hard to find this cabin available due to the reviews showing the good experience from people in this magic place, if not available, go to my profile & check my new listing "Casa de Campo in Playa Negra beach" new full house!
This cabina has a king bed on the loft and bunk beds downstairs. We are located in a quiet neighborhood and great restaurants within a few minutes walking. This town has everything you need to live comfortably and also escape the busy city life.
We are directly next door to "Cafe La Ventana" an organic cafe that serves smoothies, espresso, and amazing food using fresh made breads and local produce. Next door to them is "Johnny Manana surf art gallery"
  • Coco was easy to work with. Regret not being able to stay at his place. Had to cancel:(

  • We had an amazing time at Coco's Cabina! For our first time in Costa Rica it was the perfect spot. A great walk to the beach every day and waking up to howler monkeys in the morning right outside in the mango tree was especially memorable. Coco is a great guy and an awesome host, we would most definitely go back.

  • Coco is a wonderful host. Make us feel like we where visiting a cousin in Costa Rica.

  • Exceeded our expectations with Coco. Host- Coco is wonderful. He was welcoming and helpful with all our crazy questions. Accommodations- Coco built his guest house and it's lovely. There are no frills here, which was exactly what we were looking for. We had ample space for us and our stuff. Playa Negra- it's a wonderful town with amazing people. La Ventura next door with Johnny and Jen is a perfect place to eat. Jalapeños is the best food! Honestly we didn't have a bad meal and we are picky... Everything is fresh and organic. At the beach people are friendly. The waves were on the smaller side when we were there- but it is one of the best waves in Costa Rica. We will for sure come back. Highly recommend staying with Coco. He gives you the authentic experience of living in paradise. Love his doggies! Notes- takes about 10-15min walk to the beach through town (lovely walk). Yoga with Coco is a great way to start the day. As many places- you can not flush toilet paper at Cocos to not surprise you. Hot water in the shower which is perfect. Queen bed is comfy enough and clean. Recommend get 4x4 car.

  • We really enjoyed our stay at Coco's place. And we would definitely recommend it. We've been here for three nights and visited Playa Negra, Playa Avellana and Tamarindo. The apartment offers everything you need. Especially the kitchen was really helpful since it's quite expensive to eat everyday in a restaurant. The host Coco was amazing. He answered to all our questions and was reachable by phone all over the time.

  • This was such an amazing trip! Coco is such a kind and helpful host! We walked to yoga, walked and biked to the beach, were able to get rides wherever we wanted. The beach and people and environment is so simplistic, kind hearted and beautiful! We made friends and loved the animals! We really enjoyed being in a place where people live a lot more connected to simplicity and nature than the fancy life of the US. all the locals and restaurant owners were super kind and happy! We felt very at home, safe and had an amazing day every day! We stayed for two weeks and I wish I could have just never left! The town has really fun things to offer if you want to pay to do tours, we just toured around on our own. Nearby beaches to drive to as well. Coco is so awesome and kind and his dogs are so sweet and I miss them all dearly!

  • Such a great host! If you want to avoid tourists, this is the spot to be.

  • Coco's place was absolutely fantastic. If you're looking for the true meaning of pura vida, look no longer, coco's place is it. The place is located right next to the beach and is only about 20 minutes away from more touristy areas like tamarindo. Would definitely stay there again. Oh yeah, the surf was great!

This one-of-a-kind wooden house is the essence of tropical living. Surrounded by 4 acres of private property, it is a perfect place to decompress when you first arrive in Costa Rica, or just before you go home. 30 minutes to airport.
The Rancho is the guest house on our property where we live full time in Atenas, Costa Rica. It is a tropical-style building constructed of beautiful tropical hardwoods. It has a central living/dining area, a 2nd floor bedroom w/double bed, a small kitchenette with mini-fridge, a microwave oven, a sink carved from one long piece of wood. The bathroom is unique: 20 ft. long, stone walls and floor, wood structure; the walls are black lava rock from Arenal Volcano, the floors smooth flagstone, there is a stone shower stall, and a big wooden bathtub which unfortunately has sprung leaks and will no longer hold water. A toilet, of course; modern plumbing fixtures throughout. It was built out over a little man-made lake, but changing climate patterns have dictated a much smaller water body, only full during the rainy season. The rest has been turned into garden. The property is a birders paradise. We have 4 acres (16,000 sq.m.) with many fruit trees, and are surrounded on three sides by coffee farms. This is the real Costa Rica. And this is the perfect tropical getaway for a weekend, or an interlude in between beaches, tropical forests and other activities. The property is in the neighborhood of Alto Lopez, in Barrio San Jose Sur de Atenas, just 4 km or 10 minutes from Atenas centro. The neighborhood is very safe - everyone knows everyone else, and our property is totally secure. NOT a gated community! We are one hour from the central Pacific beach towns of Jaco and Puntarenas, 2.5 hours from Manuel Antonio National Park, 2 hours from Monte Verde Cloud Forest and 30 minutes from San Jose airport. PLEASE NOTE: The building IS NOT CHILD SAFE. I will not allow any child younger than 12 in the building. There are too many places where a child could literally fall out of the building.
Its real Costa Ricans (Tico's/Tica's.) Friendly and honest, the Ticos's consistently come out No. 1 on the World Happiness Quotient. To be expected from a county who's slogan is "pura vida" - pure life. There is a restaurant serving lunch and dinner a five minute walk from our place, and a little convenience store right on our street, 2 minutes away.
  • A beautiful one-of-a-kind space. Our hosts were extremely hospitable and kind. The house is something special and very memorable. A really perfect way to end the trip - relaxing and unique.

  • Jean and Al’s place is even more beautiful and unique in person than in the pictures! The home feels very safe, nestled within Jean and Al’s gated property. The home itself is one of a kind, rustic, and makes you feel like you are in a deluxe treehouse, but with all of the comfort and amenities of a more modern home. Jean and Al could not have been more warm and hospitable. They made it clear that they were available to help if we needed anything, but were not intrusive in any way. They suggested we try Restaurante El Mirador, just down the road. The food was great and you have lovely views of the valley from the patio. We would absolutely love to come back someday!

  • A tranquil, and unique way end to my Costa Rican holiday. The space is amazing and Jean and her husband were most hospitable. Just perfect.

  • Jean was a great host. The apples, coffee, and bread were a nice touch. The pet duck (I called it Pato) was also very friendly!

  • We stayed at Jean's for our last night in Costa Rica. I decided on it based on it's stunning photos and it's proximity to the airport. The property is beautiful-full of fruit trees and lots of birds. We saw quite a few different types of birds-including a pair of pygmy owls, which I was very excited about! The hosts are very welcoming and walked through the property with us in detail. We were happy with the location, although it's not the easiest to find (as are most places in Costa Rica). Please note that if you are affected by outside noises than be sure to bring earplugs. The dogs in the neighborhood were particularly noisy on the night we stayed and there isn't anything you can do about it, because there are no windows. Be sure to stay here if you are looking for an authentic experience!

  • Jean and Al were terrific hosts, and this property is so special! We could only stay for one night before leaving Costa Rica, but this spot was the perfect landing place for a relaxing evening and a sunny, peaceful morning before heading home. We particularly enjoyed the fresh mandarins picked from the garden! This sleeping loft and building structure is really memorable, and the overall property is just lovely. Jean was also very helpful and communicative leading up to our stay. We'd love to return!

  • Jean and Al met us as we arrived with open arms. They were friendly, attentive, and shared some fun stories of their past. Being raised in Long Island, it's always a pleasure to converse with fellow New Yorkers, and they showed love by buying bagels and cream cheese for us. The house was beautiful, clean and impressive piece of architecture. We were warned about the pet duck that walks on the roof a night, so do not be frightened. This was the perfect end to our wild 1st trip to Costa RIca. I highly recommend stating here!

  • This is the most one of a kind home and my favorite vacation experience. Pictures don't even do this place justice. Jean and her husband Al are so kind and wonderful hosts. They gave us some great beach suggestions near Jaco and it was absolutely beautiful. This was the perfect place to relax and unwind after spending a few days hiking in Monteverde. Very surprisingly we were not bothered by mosquitos at all. If you're looking for an authentic Costa Rica experience, look no further!

Beautifully designed open air home just steps from the beach.
Casa Troya reflects the typical home design of the Osa Peninsula with its half-height walls and natural, local building materials. It has a fully equipped kitchen and bathroom downstairs and a loft partitioned into two bedrooms upstairs. The overall aesthetic of this home evokes a sense of movement as the lines of the structure resemble a wave, ship or an animal, depending on one's perspective. The house is situated just 50 meters from the beach offering views of the water and a nice ocean breeze. Casa Troya offers a comfortable and inspired place to spend your vacation. Internet is not available at the house, however, is available in a different structure on the property that is about a 2 minute walk from the house.
Cabo Matapalo, known by the locals as simply Matapalo, is a small community located 15 km south on a bumpy dirt road from the town of Puerto Jimenez. The area consists of a scattering of eco-lodges and rental homes with one local bar. There are no banks or grocery stores, so make sure to stock up in Puerto Jimenez before heading out. Over the years, Matapalo has become a surf destination. It borders a beach along the Pacific Ocean that routinely ushers in large swells. There are several areas to surf. The waves vary in difficulty, allowing for beginner to expert surfing opportunity. The abundant wildlife also makes this area popular among travelers. Four species of monkeys, scarlet macaws, toucans, sloths, agoutis, and coatimundis are just a small sample of the wildlife that one sees on a regular basis. The Audobon Society has named Cabo Matapalo one of the premiere bird watching venues in the world. Matapalo is where travelers go to be at one with nature and find ultimate relaxation. The pristine rainforests and rugged natural beauty of the Osa Peninsula make this region one of the most beautiful areas in Costa Rica. Declared one of the most biologically intense places on Earth by National Geographic Magazine, the Osa Peninsula has become the premier eco-tourism destination in the country. The Osa Peninsula is a secluded nature wonderland, playing home to many of the country’s rare and endangered animal and bird species, including squirrel monkeys, jaguars, and other forest cats. With a large chunk of the peninsula forming the Corcovado National Park, this area has the single largest expanse of lowland tropical rainforest in Central America and is one of the tallest rainforests in the world. The area hosts more than 375 bird species, a fourth of Costa Rica's tree species and more than (phone number hidden) vascular plant species, many of which are found nowhere else on earth. The rain forest is made up of 700 tree species — the greatest diversity of tree species in all of Central America.
  • This place is amazing. If you can book at least three nights. Scarlet macaws, monkeys and hermit crabs wonder around the beautiful house making it feel like you're in paradise. The house is beautiful and very big. The porch with the deck chairs and hammock is great and the garden/forest around the house is gorgeous. It's very secluded so you basically have your own beach. The ocean was quite rough, but there are some easier beaches in the area. Our shower was broken so we had to take cold showers, but otherwise the perfect paradise hangout.

  • The bamboo house was an amazing place to stay close to corcovado, if you want to rest and be away from the crazy world for few days. It is such an experience to be so close to the nature and living with the sound of the waves and animals. Monica was also perfect setting all the activities for us.

  • Incredible place! We traveled around CR for about 2 weeks staying at various AirBnB’s and lodges and this was our favorite. The beach is right in front of you. It is a dream. The surrounding gardens are beautiful and visited by wildlife daily, we saw white faced monkeys as soon as we drove up to the property the first time. The house is simple but has everything you need to feel comfortable. Very clean and well taken care of. It is open air so you must be OK with that, it’s perfect for connecting with nature, waking up and going to sleep with the sun and jungle life. There is a surf camp close so you can easily coordinate surf board rentals/lessons which the host Monika helped us with. There is also a very good casual bar/restaurant within walking distance that we stopped at daily for drinks and lunch. Monika was very kind and welcoming, easy to communicate with and available when needed. We hope to come back one day, highly recommend.

  • Our stay at Boca Sombrero on Peninsula Osa, Costa Riva was simply breathing taking and beyond our imagination. We stayed at Casa Troya from which we believe the designer should be awarded for its beautiful construction and Apart from the house, Osa's Flora & Fauna, the beach and the fantastic hosts made this stay the highlight of our vacation. Thank you so much..!

  • It was heartbreaking to have to leave Casa Troja at Boca Sombrero. We had such a wonderful time here with our 2 children. The property is (with the current state of the road) about 45 min drive from Puerto Jimenez. You definitely need 4x4, travel further south also requires crossing rivers via fords. Monika the on site manager was a delight and helped us with absolutely everything. We can thoroughly recommend a boat trip to the wild life sanctuary towards Golfito - we had a very informative tour and got to see numbers of Dolphins on the way back. Casa Troya was designed by an artist and you do live in a work of art, open to the surroundings, so expect many uninvited visitors! Insect repellent is a must. Scarlet macaws and monkeys at breakfast, all sorts of other wildlife to be spotted from the terrace. The beach is beautiful but unfortunately not suitable for children due to the rocks. However, there is a great sandy beach just a couple of km up the road (Playa Tamales) where body boarding etc is possible. We can 100% recommend this wonderful place for an unforgettable holiday.

  • We had such an incredible time at boca sombrero! The house is a uniquely designed open air space - Falling asleep to the sounds of the ocean was a great Costa Rican experience. The hosts went above and beyond to make our stay perfect. We were very sad to leave and hope to come back soon!

  • We booked the Osa Beachfront house for 3 nights. On the pictures it looks nice but you still don't know what to expect. Upon Arrival we tought we where at the wrong place. It is so beautiful!!! In one word Amazing. You need to get used to the freedom of the open house but wauwie. The first morning we woke up because a big group of macaws (ara parrots) where sitting in the tree in front of the house. They where easy to spot. The garden around the place is wonderful, full with animals and fruits. Monika is realy helpful and takes very good care of here guests. She tels a lot about the area and suggest excursions. We visit the corcovado parc witch was nice. But the waterfall hike close to the house is beautiful! It was certenly oure best place to stay in Costa Rica.

  • It wasn't Gretchen that was onsite, but Monika, and she was great. She came when we arrived and welcomed us warmly and made sure we had everything we needed. The house was incredible!! And the place was magical, with animals and birds everywhere. It was an enchanted place.

The Tree House is hand-crafted, one of 3 casitas and 2 treehouses at the Bio Thermales natural resort organically integrated into our 35 acre rainforest. Guests enjoy free 24 hour access to the 12 natural hot and cool springs pools of various temperatures and rainforest trails. 45 minute drive from La Fortuna and Volcano Arenal, 3 hour drive from the SJO airport, 4 hour drive from Liberia airport. No children under 5 years of age for safety reasons: the height of the Tree House.
Please message us if we will be your first or last destination in Costa Rica. We highly recommend booking on weekdays for more privacy and tranquility, as we have more day visitors from 9 am to 6 pm to our hot springs on the weekends, especially Sundays. If your reservation includes a Sunday, we highly recommend planning a day outing to the many wonderful nearby activities. We are three hours north of San Jose (airport), 45 minutes east of Fortuna and Volcano Arenal, and the many activities there and nearby. Guests enjoy 24/day access* to our hot springs and trails in our 35 acre rainforest at no extra charge. The pools are cleaned every morning starting at 6 am, but one hot spring will always be available. Many factors may dictate scheduling, including weather. We do not charge for children 17 and under -- but we will not accept reservations for the Tree House for families with children under 5 years old for whom a 20 foot fall from the balcony would be very serious. Our hot springs are ancient “deep Earth” sources that bubble up through the rainforest floor, laden with mineral-rich waters that have been in the Earth for at least 10,000 years. Our waters are rich in bicarbonates, calcium and magnesium, low in sulfur, and slightly acidic -- qualities shared by many of the world's best hot springs. Five of our 9 organic form hot springs pools are located in the rainforest, and 4 hot springs pools as well as a small and a large cool spring swimming pool are located in a meadow, surrounded by rainforest (see below for more information). The small and large cool springs pools both have water slides, and there is a small water slide in one of the shallow and moderate temperature pools for small children. The Tree House is built to strict Costa Rican building codes, but as with all tree houses, there is some movement when the wind blows, and this could be uncomfortable for people very sensitive to motion sickness. You may see our other listings on Airbnb at: Tucano Casita (Toucan Casita) is listed as "Rainforest Casita with Hot Springs": Mariposa Casita (Butterfly Casita) is listed as "Rainforest Casita2 with Hot Springs" Colibri Casita (Hummingbird Casita) is listed as "Rainforest Casita3 with Hot Springs" Tree House: "Rainforest Tree House with Hot Springs" You can check availability of each accommodation by clicking on the "Calendar" tab above the main photo on each listing. We are a 45 minute drive from the many activities in Fortuna and Volcano Arenal -- such as ziplines, hanging bridges, white water rafting, slow river floats or kayaking through wildlife sanctuaries -- or a 1.5 hour drive to La Paz Waterfall Gardens and Volcano Poas. Bio Thermales Hot Springs is open to the public for day use of the hot springs, and most of our day visitors are Costa Ricans, so you may also meet new Tico friends. Bio Thermales is generally not crowded, however, except on major holidays and Sundays. Food/Meals: The Tree House has a kitchen. There are many restaurants and a good supermarket within a 15 minute drive. Traditional Costa Rican meals can be delivered from a local caterer for very reasonable prices (Costa Rican food is tasty but not spicy). Otherwise, for those without cars, we can call a taxi or synchronize a food shopping trip when we go to town for errands. Driving from SJO airport: Please message us before booking if we are your first and/or last destination in Costa Rica. We recommend at least a small 4 wheel drive car. The last 3 kilometers are country roads. Three hours of daylight are needed to safely drive here from the SJO airport before sunset at 5:30 pm. The drive through mountainous cloud forests is splendid in daylight, but prone to fog and rain, especially at night, creating hazardous visibility conditions after dark. Finding our countryside location will also be far easier if you arrive the first time before sunset. If your plane lands in the morning to noon, you can drive here directly from the airport. Otherwise, it is safer to book a room near the airport on your first night, or ask us to book a private driver ($145) and have a rental car delivered at no extra charge. Last night in Costa Rica: Driving directly to the SJO airport on the same day is possible if you book a flight in the afternoon. Please be aware that you must be at the airport 2.5 hours before departure. If you have an early morning departing flight it is basically necessary to stay near the airport on the night before.
We are in the countryside in a non-touristy rural area of family farms, orchards and rainforest, off the beaten tourist track. The last 2 km are unpaved country roads. Guests should expect a natural environment, integrated into the rainforest, with the usual wildlife native to a tropical rainforest (except there are no large jungle cats like jaguars). We are a 45 minute drive from the many activities in Fortuna/Volcano Arenal, including volcano hikes, ziplines, swimming in the pristine waters below the La Fortuna Waterfall, white water rafting and slow "safari float" rafting to see monkeys, sloths and other animals. Closer to us is a slow river raft tour, rainforest hikes or horseback riding, and a visit to the Iguana Bridge with many large iguanas within a 15 minute drive.
  • Experience of a lifetime. Absolutely wonderful to sleep in the open, fresh, jungle air. Kathy and Bernie are just about the coolest people I have ever met. They were so helpful and caring. It made me feel very safe on the other side of the world. I recommend this home to anyone!

  • The treehouse at Bio Thermales was amazing. My Dad and I only stayed for one night but Johan made our stay very easy. He welcomed us like a friend and made sure all of our questions were answered. The property is beautiful. A bit of an adventure to arrive but worth the drive. We loved the water slides and the hike was a good way to start the morning!

  • Beautiful place, just like described! Kathy and Bernie were very welcoming, helpful and had very good tips for the rest of our trip. Really nice pools and a beautiful trail in the jungle that everyone should try. We arrived during dark and we don't suggest arriving after 6, since it was harder to find this way. It was easy to cook ourselves food in the kitchen and it was very cosy to sleep in. We highly suggest this sureal experience!

  • Great experience! Loved staying in the treehouse surrounded by rainforest and jungle sounds. Beautiful hot springs and grounds. It was our first visit to Costa Rica and Kathy and Bernie were very friendly, informative, and helpful both before and during our stay. Would highly recommend.

  • Wonderful, Wonderful, Wonderful!! You will not be disappointed. Kathie and Bernie are great hosts and help you arrange everything. If the treehouse is unavailable any of the Casitas would be nice. The property is a true Costa Rican feel. If you can book with Frank for any transportation needs, he will make your travel outside of Bio Thermales special.

  • The Treehouse at Bio Thermales is a unique gem. It is rustic in a good way; simple and close to nature. The hot springs were wonderful. Some of the pools are tucked right into jungle and the temperatures vary so you can find one that is just right. We did not meet Kathy and Bernie as they were traveling. Their manager Johan and his family were delightful and very helpful. The Treehouse has quite a few stairs and a very steep set of stairs to the loft but if you don't mind that and you love being close to nature it is perfect.

  • My husband and I stayed in the treehouse for three nights, and we had a wonderful time. Each morning we woke up to the sounds of birds and monkeys outside our window, and each night we enjoyed dinner and drinks on the deck. The natural hot springs are amazing - one of the highlights of our trip! Bernie and Kathy were very kind and attentive hosts, and we appreciated their help with everything from restaurant recommendations to the ferry schedule. We're both very happy that we were able to stay in the treehouse while in Costa Rica - it was part of our adventure, and we highly recommend it! (One tip: Empty the garbage each day to avoid having any bugs in the treehouse. Overall, bugs weren't an issue, but they would find their way inside if we left food scraps in the garbage).

  • We spent 4 glorious days at the tree house. It was me and 2 children, 7 and 12. It was so peaceful (not quiet, but all natural bird calls and cicadas) and beautiful. The pools were amazing. It was everything we hoped for and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. Unfortunately we didn't get to meet Kathy or Bernie, but Kathy was so helpful before the trip and with arrangements. Her suggestion of hiring Frank to drive us from San Jose was perfect. A wonderful gentleman. We also arranged to have a rental car delivered there and that worked well also. It is defintely a place to relax. I would love to go back. Thank you!!

This large, vaulted-ceilinged Villa is surrounded by glass on three sides and enjoys magnificent views of Cerro Pico Blanco, the nature reserve and the rainforest. It has a king bed and waking up is like being perched in the middle of the mountains.
We are a small property of nine apartments nestled in a tropical garden overlooking the Central Valley of Costa Rica. Our property is secure, peaceful and tranquil, with hiking trails and isolated areas to hang out and sunbathe. When you are ready for more action the center of Escazu with restaurants and shopping is 15 minutes away and if you want to go into San Jose it’s only another 15 minutes or so. The best of both worlds! See (email hidden)
Our property is located in the most exclusive area of Escazu, which is the most exclusive neighborhood in Costa Rica. Our neighbors are well-known politicians, artists and business-people. While it may be the “Beverly Hills” of Costa Rica we enjoy a very peaceful and tranquil lifestyle with the advantage of being 20 minutes from the city. There are amazing hiking trails, waterfalls and natural pools above our property on Pico Blanco (one of the mountains that towers over Escazu). If you desire a relaxed vacation there are plenty of areas to relax on the property, but if you’re more adventurous there is a wide variety of activity just outside the gates of the property!
  • Raymond's place had the most beautiful view of the mountains! We had a very short stay but would come back in a heart beat. It is a very secluded area which we felt very safe at. Check in was very easy with the guard (I speak Spanish so I'm unsure about the language barrier with the guard). The dogs on the property were very sweet as well. The drive up the hill was very steep. If you are driving here do NOT pass the un paved road. Would recommend to anyone!

  • Great place in Escazu! A large spacious area nestled in the hills. Very secure. Place is a bit far some not sure getting Taxis would work (we had our own car)

  • Raymond and his staff did an amazing job getting us settled in San Antonio. His recommendations on where to eat/explore set our agenda for the weekend, and we're so glad we followed his lead. The unit and location were absolutely perfect for our brief time in the area - we can't recommend Raymond's property (specifically Villa Buena Vista) enough!

  • The pictures don't actually do the view justice. It's an incredible, unbeatable view. The room itself was nice and had everything we necessary. Although we never met, Raymond was extremely helpful. He gave excellent recommendations and was very helpful in finding his place. I highly recommend this place and Raymond. As for finding the place, if you have as hard of a time as I did, go to Cementerio Campo de Esperanza, San Antonio, San Jose on Calle Hoja Blanca and go 1.2 km further up hill.

  • Raymond was very friendly, hospitable and willing to accommodate our questions and requests. The property is absolutely stunning -- the views will leave you breathless. Spending the night there before heading to the airport was a treat. However, we had a few concerns: first, when we arrived, the space hadn't been cleaned (table tops and sinks were dirty and the bed linen hadn't been changed) and second, the property is difficult to locate, especially with limited Spanish proficiency. Thankfully, Raymond was home and quickly asked one of his employees to clean the apartment before we returned from dinner. He also called a driver he uses frequently to help us get around. Overall, it was a good stay, and I'd recommend it to others looking for a place near San Jose.

  • The photos do NOT lie, in fact it was even prettier. Very secure property, absolutely no worries about our vehicle and the guards were friendly. As for directions to the place it was not difficult at all. I do recommend a rental car but that's for all of Costa Rica in general. He also sent us a helpful list of places to see and where to eat and was quick to respond if we had any questions. The actual place was very clean and a cozy bed as well. Found this location to be ideal for when we were venturing around San Jose. If anything the views are spectacular!!!! Ceiling to floor Windows!

  • The house was beautiful, very clean, had amazing views and had the little extra amenities such as coffee, etc. that distinguishes a host and a special place to stay. The property was absolutely gorgeous and we enjoyed walking around and exploring. Raymond was incredibly helpful from giving good directions to answering all of our questions (e.g. pointing out where the coffee was growing, answering all of our question re the region and the property). Also, there is a full time security guard so I always felt safe. I honestly cannot wait to stay at Villa Buena Vista again the next time that I am in San Jose!!! Thanks you for everything Raymond - you are definitely a super-host in my book!!!!!

  • Raymond is a great host and offers excellent accommodation that is centrally located without the hustle of the capital. Highly recommend.

Casa Blue's 1.5 acre property sits on a mountain, surrounded by tropical forest and overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Up to ten guests may enjoy this beautiful and private estate with all amenities and only 15 minutes from Tamarindo.
Casa Blue's 1.5 acre property sits on a mountain, surrounded by tropical forest and overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It offers 5 bedrooms with 5.5 bathrooms. This is one of the last arquitectural jewels of the late Steve Adams (San Diego, CA) and it encloses what was most important for the creative genious: a house that is designed from the outside, in. The main house is painted in a soft pale blue, given the property its name and is reminiscent of the owner's trips to the South of France. The gate opens into an outdoor patio with a fountain and a BBQ area, the whole detailed in grey stone and giving the house a very exotic yet cozy atmosphere. The ample entrance hallway is framed in glass, allowing the sun to shower the house all day long, and immersing the guests in the fabulous landscape from the minute they step in. This main house contains the Master Bedroom, which is an ample room in a private wing, with a terrace, an office space, a walk-in closet, a bathtub and both an indoor and an outdoor shower. The two other guest bedrooms have access to terraces with hammocks, and both enjoy magnificent ocean views. An exterior stairway leads into an upper deck, suitable for yoga practice, massage sessions or just cocktail drinking at sunset time. The living area encompasses the kitchen, the dining and the living room, creating a casual and relaxed atmosphere. Bi-folding glass doors blend this area with the pool and the deck, bringing the outdoors in and making it just the ideal spot to chill. The spacious TV room with a DVD player, a book library and a comfortable couch may be separated from the rest of the house by a sliding door, thus creating a quiet place to watch a movie or the perfect game room for adults and children alike. Beautifully kept garden walkways lead to the other buildings of the house: a caretakers quarters and the two guest bungalows set in forest. These are ancient Thai buildings, all made out of wood and imported by the owner to recreate the zen energy of old Asian cultures. Both bungalows are ancrered in wood platforms thus giving the impression of being tree houses, overlooking the ocean and surrounded by green foliage all year round.
  • Casa Blue is simply stunning. Each architectural detail is more impressive than the last, from the indoor/outdoor elements to the intricately carved rooftops to the pool and hot tub design. In terms of the structure itself, it's one of the most amazing rentals we've ever experienced. Elgin and Jocelyn are super friendly and helpful on site and Alejandra is a patient and quick communicator as an off site property manager. Casa Blue is perched on a steep hill--the views!--so you definitely want 4 wheel drive. The location is quite isolated which is great for privacy. Our kids loved playing in the pool all day--we had to drag them to the gorgeous surrounding beaches because they had everything they wanted right at Casa Blue. Thank you!

  • Incredible stay, beautiful house, perfect location, phenomenal view...Definitely coming back next time I come to Costa Rica! Thank you Alejandra!!!

  • We were a group of 10 adults and we loved the house. The pictures were preparing us for a great place to be together, but they somehow did not do Casa Blue justice. The pool was kept sparkling clean, as the entire house was also. Alejandra got back to me questions very quickly. She set up Carmen to make two dinners and a really fun night with Fabian, the french chef. The caretakers were excellent. We all agreed that it was the best home we have ever rented.

  • Alejandra was a wonderful host who was exceptionally responsive and attentive to our needs. We really appreciated working with her! She helped us arrange some private meals (Carmen came and cooked a basic dinner the evening we arrived, which was good considering we hadn't really settled in; Fabien came and cooked a gourmet meal that we would highly recommend, he is spectacular) and massage treatments. She also connected us with Dervin of Yellowfin Tours, who was a gem for transfers and tours. The house was very comfortable for our family of 8 (5 adults, 3 children). The kids loved the infinity pool. There was plenty of room to run around. The extra den was nice for relaxing. The house was tastefully furnished and sparse in a good way. The views were incredible. The home was also very clean thanks to the on-site staff. There were some ants in the living room but nothing severe. Visitors should note that the home is about a 30-minute drive to Tamarindo. This wasn't a drawback at all for us - we liked the seclusion (though we did go one day to Tamarindo; the beach isn't terribly attractive and the town is a bit overrun).

  • Casa Blue was beautiful! Better than the pictures! Went with 9 friends for a bachelorette weekend and had the best time. The house was kept exceptionally clean. We used the house recommended chef, catamaran tour, and personal driver and had no issues. Alejandra was great at responding to any questions and concerns prior to and during the trip. Would definitely recommend!

  • This place is absolutely UNREAL. The photos do not do it justice. The most beautiful house I have ever stayed in. Alejandra is the best hostess ever. And the service of the staff is legitimately beyond measure. EVERY detail is perfect. I could write a million words on how incredible this trip has been and how amazing the house made it. Stayed with eight friends and we were all crying when we had to leave. Only warning: no matter what plans you have, you will not ever want to leave once you get there. Oh my god. Feel like I'm on a high just from staying here. 11/10, would stay again for the rest of my life if I could.

  • Fantastic house, truly a gem in Costa Rica. Perfect house for a family affair, all the cooking equipment was available. Design of both the inside and outside of the house is amazing. Pool is divine and perfect depth (about 5feet). Well kept by people who live in the estate. The only negative is that it's in a gated area that's difficult to find for those used to addresses and (Hidden by Airbnb) map. About 20 min from markets.

  • The listing description was understated. Calling Casa Blue a "Home" is simply not doing it justice. It is simply an oasis. The design and decoration of Casa Blue is suitable for relaxation as well as celebration. All corners, spaces, and lands of Casa Blue have been designed to further your experience there. The staff was incredible and knowleagable. They won't bother as they value your privacy. But for us, they immensely contributed to making our stay there unforgettable. I will be going back to Casa Blue very shortly for a long "work-cation".

Sharing the treetops with monkeys, birds & iguanas, this light, airy, 2nd floor apartment is just 50 meters from the beach, right in the heart of Sámara. Great nature views and sounds of the ocean throughout. Fully equipped kitchen, 2 bedrooms, WiFi.
Poised on a back road that ends at the beach and is shared by the local language school and other lodging units, this unique and spacious apartment (75m2) with its vaulted ceiling is shaded by mango, papaya, plantain, and cashew tres. Our fully furnished apartment has two bedrooms, one bath, and an open-plan living room and kitchen with a tiled breakfast bar, and WiFi. Netflix works perfectly in Costa Rica, we suggest bringing your account info to be able to connect on your devices when you wish. The master bedroom has a double bed while the second has two single beds sleeping a total of four comfortably, perfect for a family, two couples or traveling friends. Both rooms have bedside tables, lamps, closets and ceiling fans. Our unique furniture is handmade by local woodworkers using recycled tropical woods and driftwood. The kitchen has a convection toaster-oven, 4-burner stovetop, blender, electric water heater and Costa Rican coffee-drip, and seating for 5 at the breakfast bar. In the interest of full disclosure, as with any rentals in the heart of Sámara, the bar-restaurants can be noisy at night, and there is a bar-restaurant diagonally behind us that has live music on Wednesdays. The early morning roosters, dogs and howler monkeys present all over Sámara can also be a noise factor! To that end we have two loud floor fans that work great for drowning out outside noise, and recommend bringing earplugs. If you are sensitve to noise or a light sleeper, we recommend looking for a rental further out of town. We do not have AC at the apartment, so check average temperatures for your dates if you are not used to the tropical heat.
I love that we are so close to the beach, you don't even need to put your flipflops on, and that there is so much nature and wildlife around us. Also, being right near the language school is a plus, as guests can use the facilities and take part in activities like yoga and dance, and feel like they are part of a community if they want to. Also, absolutely everything is within very short walking distance (no more than a few blocks)!
  • Great visit to Laura's little apartment above her house! We were caught in the rainy season (early October), and so we had a lot of down time in the apartment between storms. It was still steamy and humid inside, but the apartment had good ventilation (can't close the windows even if we'd wanted) with ceiling and floor fans, which my boyfriend often pointed at himself to stay cool. The beach was lovely and very swimmable, even in the rain. Samara is very touristy and a wee bit pricier than some of the guidebooks led me to expect. $5 burger lunch to an $80 dinner for two. Seriously recommend the burgers at Dana's - probably the best I've ever had! Only downside for me was the queen sized spring bed was fairly uncomfortable. We ended up staying in the two separate twin beds in the second room on the last night. Also, Laura forgot to mention there'd be construction and noisy workers staying in the back house below us - they stayed up late watching loud TV and started work around 7. She was very responsive to having them change the hours they did work after we mentioned it to her. Overall, highly recommend!

  • We spent a lovely week in the Casa del Aire. It is just as pictured -- we saw monkeys from our window, picked star fruit in the backyard, and strolled 2 minutes to get to the gorgeous beach of Sàmara. As noted, there is only a spiral staircase to the apartment & a bit of weekend noise from local bars (bring your earplugs), but neither was a problem for us.

  • This house was great for my family. The beach is at the end of the road and the downtown is right around the corner. The house was clean and exactly what you see in the pictures. The were screens on all of the windows and the fans helped with the heat. We did hear the club down the road on the weekend, but the fans also helped drown out the noise.

  • We really enjoyed staying at Laura's. It was the perfect place to start our trip in Costa Rica as a family. We found it comfortable and easy being so close to the beach as it was very hot!

  • We are finally settled in at home and missing Samara already. I can not say enough about this town and the people who reside here. I did not have to pleasure of meeting Laura, but Virginia "Chili" and all the employees at the school were fantastic. Everyone is very friendly and more than happy to help you with anything you should need. The rental property is exactly as mentioned in Laura's post. We were a little skeptical of traveling during the rainy season, but it turned out perfect. The rain came and went throughout the day, but we planned around it. It also made the heat a little more tolerable. It rained through the night which was so relaxing and drowned out any noise. My fiance and I will definitely be back to visit Samara again in the future and have talked about potentially buying property in Samara and moving eventually. Pura Vida!

  • Laura's place is amazing, the location is perfect to just get up and walk to the beach. We truly enjoyed our stay at her place even during rain season! Hope to come back some time soon!

  • We loved Samara and our huuuuge apartment. We where just two people in our big loft :) - which is clean, safe and comfy! The kitchen is well equipped, the beds are comfy, the beach is reached in one minute by foot (perfect!!!) and the city and supermarket is also really close: perfect location! Samara beach was great for us surf beginners! We had a lot of fun and would definitely come back. Laura was not in Samara at the days we where there, but she stayed in touch helpfully with texts :) Laura: looking forward to meeting you next time and many thanks!

  • We loved our stay! Great host, great location, great space! We had an outstanding vacation. Laura was a very helpful in giving us ideas in planning our activities; my daughter even took a class at the Intercultura School. The apartment is centrally located, just a quick walk to the beach, grocery, restaurants and shopping. Samara is great beach town, plenty to do, but very relaxed. We will definitely be back!

  • Breathtaking. Green. Open. Relaxing. Everything we wanted and so much more. We felt we were in the middle of the Forrest and waking up every morning to that greenery was amazing.

  • My wife and I enjoyed Tanya's home. It was secluded and peaceful. The windows gave the home a nice warm feel. We enjoyed the hummingbirds and nature sounds. We went for a short hike down to the creek exploring the flora and fauna. The home was spacious. We enjoyed the sound of the rain on the roof. If we are given the chance, we would stay here again. We rented a sedan for our trip to Costa Rica. We were able to get to the house with the car, but I would recommend getting something with more ground clearance like an SUV. Some of the roads can be a little rough in this area. But I wouldn't let this deter you from enjoying this home for your stay. If you are wanting to escape the business of a city, this is the place to go. Marshall

  • Tanya's house is just Amazing! Very beautiful and comfortable. The place is very quiet and peaceful. We could feed a hummingbirds on the veranda and see a lot of animals and birds around the house. It was just wonderful!Thank you very much Tanya.

  • Tanya’s place was a beautiful, peaceful spot for enjoying Monteverde, and the people who take care of it were very helpful when we needed information. We had everything we needed within walking distance and really enjoyed Tanya's house, deck and view.

  • We had an amazing stay at Tanya's home in Monteverde - the property was magical with the light and outdoors streaming in through all the windows. Hummingbirds greeted us each morning with views of the Nicoya Golf in the background off the wrap around porch... Wow.

  • Our stay at Cloud Forest Sanctuary was amazing. The house is beautiful, the view is spectacular and the atmosphere is relaxing. Tanya was very accessible and helpful. We would highly recommend this spot if you are looking for a retreat from the everyday.

  • A beautiful house secluded in the forest a short walk from Hotel Belmar. Sugar-water was supplied for the hummingbird feeders, and the hummingbirds provided endless entertainment on the wrap-around deck.

  • We loved our time at Shlomo's casita. It was everything promised, a nice relaxing stay in the jungle with easy access to the beach. Shlomo was a very responsive to our questions and the casita was as depicted in the post. Also, his dogs Flor and Chiba were very sweet and gentle. This is a great location for anyone looking for one quiet time with nature.

  • We had such a beautiful start to our Costa Rican adventure courtesy of Shlomo and the casita we called home for a few days. Absolute peace and tranquility, and a very local, organic vibe. From his place we could walk to the Fisherman's beach, not an easy walk but so worth it, with a stellar beach on a small peninsula, locals having picnics, and a delish little outdoor restaurant on the road down to the beach with incredible fish tacos and smoothies. Shlomo himself was kind, inviting, and so calming. We got to enjoy his homemade hummous and peanut butter which he sells locally. The casita was beyond expectation and just perfect. Just bring food and all else is stocked. The yoga class was breathtaking and overlooks banana and palm trees. Loved it. We would definitely return and have surely left inspired.

  • Shlomo's casitas are great, deep in the woods, you're constantly surrounded by nature and have the jungle and the beach right there for your enjoyment :)

  • Shlomo was great! He even met us in town to guide us back to his place upon our arrival. His Casita was beautiful! Handcrafted by himself with evident pride and care. His suggestions of what to do and where to go were invaluable. His attitude and positive outlook was pleasant and infectious! He was a fantastic host and his rental set up is excellent!

    Mathew S.2016-01-07T00:00:00Z
  • First off, Shlomo is amazing. He seems to be a very spiritual, loving and caring person. He will do whatever you need to make you feel comfortable. We ended up in the town at night and he met us nearby to lead us to the property (considering CR is hard to get around with no street signs and rare street lights). Once we got settled in he brought us some fresh cut local fruits. The casita was great. Handmade and part of the surrounding forest. It was a great first impression of Costa Rica. I felt one with nature and very relaxed. If you are expecting a luxury resort, you will be disappointed, but we were trying to avoid the resort experience and loved Shlomo's place. His dogs are awesome and friendly. They made my "city slicker" fiancee feel safe and secure in the forest. They definitely have the best lives for a dog (especially compared to NYC dogs).

  • Shlomo was a wonderful host. His sweet little homes, built with the materials from the jungle were nothing but beautiful. My boyfriend and I had stayed there for two nights. If you're looking for tranquility, this is the place to be- immersed in jungle noises, with all the sweet little fire flies and howler monkeys. It was clean, the bed was comfortable and the air was fresh as can be. Although a bit of a drive from the beach, local shops and places to eat, it was very worth it. I certainly recommend a stay here to slow down and really enjoy your vacation. Thank you for sharing a part of your dream with us, Shlomo!

  • Shlomo was extremely welcoming and helpful. We ended up coming in late and were lost on the dirt roads at night on the way into San Juanillo (I recommend messaging Shlomo for directions rather than trying to use GPS), and he rode out to find us so we could follow him back to the house. In the morning, he greeted us smiling and provided maps and suggestions about the surrounding area. The space itself is AMAZING! It is isolated from the rest of the roads and towns and you fall asleep listening to the sounds of the jungle. You can access various beaches and explore the tourist activities in San Juanillo, Nosara and Playa Ostional. I would recommend staying with Shlomo, and I hope to return sometime.

  • My father and I spent a week in Costa Rica and decided to take a few days to relax in nature. Shlomo's place did not disappoint. He was so welcoming and hospitable. Whenever we had questions or concerns, he was always available. On our first day there, he drew us a map of his favorite idyllic beaches and food spots (take his recommendations, trust me). He's truly crafted a remarkable retreat.

The swimming pool lies in between the house & the beach. It's a perfect spot for the most beautiful sunsets & surf shows. The view is a luxury! There is an outdoor shower area in between plantain trees overlooking the ocean. A very rustic BBQ is also available. Wifi is available as well as fans in every bedroom and living /lounge areas. Keep in mind Costa Rica has very slow internet throughout. A very large deck with a large custom wood dining table, rocking chairs, sofa & hammocks is available when the owners are not present in the next door house. Secure parking is available inside the property for 4 cars. Playa Hermosa is a quiet beach town known worldwide for its surfing - it hosted the world surf championships a few years back. Saturday afternoons surfers & surf fans fight for parking to witness world-class surfing at the weekly surf competitions, viewed from the privacy of your beach home. The property is located at the end of the town & the beginning of a natural reserve that preserves sea turtle nestling. It abuts the main highway known as La Costanera to the east, the Backyard hotel to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the west & an open cattle field to the south. Small restaurants, surf & a few small shops are located within walking distance. Due to the town's proximity to virgin rainforest, you will likely see Scarlet macaws on a daily basis. Iguanas roam freely all over the property. Our country is notorious for bad roads & bad signage. For most flexibility, we recommend you hire a 4x4 with low mileage and either bring or rent a GPS. Waze is very handy! If you plan to party at night in Jaco, taxis can easily be hired for pick up and will be available in town for drop off. Always be careful with your belongings, as it is the case with all of Latin America. Bring your own surfboard, rent or take surf lessons in town but be mindful of the extremely strong ocean currents. A yoga center is less than 1 km away. Local tours include bungee jumping in Jaco, sport fishing in Los Suenos Golf Resort & Marina, horseback riding through jungle trails or along the beach, hikes to waterfalls, kayaking, biking, ATV rides, canopy ziplining & whitewater rafting. On site massages can be arranged too. Other day trips include Tortuga Island, Carara National Park & Manuel Antonio National Park visits. The property ia located 1.5 hrs away from San Jose & 5 min from the bustling tiwb of Jaci, where you wilk dknd ATMs, nightlife, restaurants, supermarkets, souvenir skhops & all sorts of retail. Please note there is no air conditioning or hot water.

  • We had an amazing experience at Catarina’s place! The location seriously cannot be beat—it’s amazing. Right on the beach, awesome vibe, and still close enough to Jacó that you can run out for meals and supplies quickly. Yeah, the traffic can get a little loud, but nothing that earplugs can’t fix for light sleepers. The communication was very prompt, clear, and useful. Highly recommended!

  • Catarina worked with us when our arrival time was delayed. Her responses were very quick and tried to accommodate the needs of our group. The house was in amazing shape. Being right on the beach totally made staying at this house epic. Thank you Catarina for your hospitality and would recommend anyone to stay here.

  • The nicest house and the nicest hosts. Our group of 8 loved staying at Catarina's house in Playa Hermosa, Puntarenas. True to its name, Casa Iguana is a unique, open-air home with a wonderful outdoor pool and great outdoor lounge spaces, and the property is accompanied by iguanas, macaws, geckos, and other birds. It also backs up to one of the Pacific Ocean's best beaches with wonderful waves, surf, and dark sand. I can't understate enough how beautiful this property is and how wonderful the pool and oceanfront access is. As noted, this home is quite loud due to proximity to the highway, crashing waves, and a chorus of birds, but by the end of the trip, everyone in our group slept fine. Earplugs are definitely recommended though. The indoor space isn't perfect, but it has everything you'd need to make meals/drinks/coffee, relax, and enjoy the outdoor paradise. The bedrooms are modest but accommodating and the three bathrooms are all quite nice. Bugs in the area are common so you have to be wary to keep doors closed and lights off. Playa Hermosa is a great area with a handful of good restaurants/bars, and is located right off of the Pacific Highway 34. It's quite straightforward to get there from the SJO airport and easy enough to rent a car and drive on your own. Within walking distance of the home, we particularly enjoyed Bowie's Point and the Backyard Bar. For more dining and nightlife variety, Jaco is a short 15-minute taxi away. For those looking to budget travel and buy groceries in bulk, the Auto Mercado in Herradura is a great grocery store with a lot of options and good produce/meat/bakery/alcohol offerings about 20 minutes North on the main highway and is on the way in from the SJO airport. Overall, we absolutely loved the space and Catarina, her mother, and the on-site property manager Derby were great hosts. Catarina was incredibly accommodating, and Derby was very helpful if we needed information or help with taxis. We definitely hope to come back again.

  • The house was perfect for my group, and Catarina was great! She was always quick to respond to me and able to answer any questions I had. The house had plenty of space for my group, and we had no issues during our time there. Costa Rica is beautiful, the house is right on a gorgeous beach, and the atmosphere is magical. I definitely recommend it!

  • What an amazing view! Waking up and falling asleep to the sound of ocean waves! Who could want more? Very clean place with whatever you need. Don’t hesitate making this one of your Costa Rica Destinations. Way better than a resort at a better price!

  • We were welcomed by Yolanda, Catarina's mom. She gave us a quick tour and some fresh fruit as well as introduced us to the man who takes care of the grounds and was then on her way. The property is absolutely beautiful and very well taken care of. The pool is beautiful and a great way to cool off any time of the day. The beach is spectacular: clean and beautiful, the closest thing to paradise we've ever seen. We were warned prior to our trip as well as by Yolanda when we arrived that the waves can be a bit rough. We swam in the ocean every day with our kids (12, 12, 11 and 9) and we were all fine but we did stay right with them and were careful not to go out farther to where we could touch with our heads above the water. Although we didn't have the pleasure of meeting Catarina in person, she was very prompt in responding to our texts and had a wealth of knowledge to share about restaurants and things to do. There are lots of options close by and you can do as much or as little as you wish. We did our grocery shopping at he Maxi Pali and also drove into a grocery store in Herradura where there was more of a selection of produce. Catarina told us about Pizza Bocha, a restaurant a few doors down, that had awesome pizza and we ate there twice. We did note that the road was at times a bit noisy in the bedrooms that line the back of the house when we were going to bed at night but it the noise stopped around 9:30 - 10:00 pm or so and was quiet through the night. The traffic from the road cannot be heard at all by the pool on the ocean side of the house. We had a terrific time and are looking to return next year. Catarina, Yolanda and Derby were all gracious hosts.

  • I went to Costa Rica as part of bachelor party and stayed at Catarina's house for 4 nights. It was an incredible experience. The house is right on the one of the best surfing beaches in the world. It is also very relaxed / we felt like we had the whole beach to ourselves. Our entire trip was great. Catarina was super helpful at recommending activities. A really nice & friendly guard / caretaker lives close to the property, he also helped with questions / taxis and also prepared a wonderful fresh watermelon smoothie for us one day. The house is quite close to Jaco, if that is your thing. We ended up not going into Jaco as much as we thought we would, because Costa Rica offered up so many better options. I could sit on that beach, looking at waves for months... Overall, it was a fantastic experience, thank you Catarina!

  • We had a wonderful time, our host had a caretaker who was very helpful. The swimming pool and beach were excellent. Catarina always replied our questions within a few minutes- a great plus for any guest considering this property. Our party of 5 enjoyed every moment our stay. Would recommend this place for any group of 5-8 people.

Playa de Jaco, Provincia de Puntarenas, Costa Rica

Super magical & unique tree house based on sacred geometry located on an active organic farm. It's truly in the trees, not on stilts. It's composed of 4 rustic open air structures: the Awarenest - a separate epic 360 view deck 9m (30ft) high, the Bedroom Pod - with hanging bed, desk, northern view of the mountains and half bath with suspended bridge to full Kitchen Pod both at 4.5m (15ft) high and lastly a separate bathroom/shower pod at 3m (12ft). Basically a jungle farm wildlife adventure.
The main initial structure, the bedroom is actually suspended by cables between 5 strong Melina trees. The sacred geometry shape is an Icosahedron, one of the 5 platonic solids. It’s composed of 20 equilateral triangles that join at 12 vertices roughly making a spherical shape. The bedroom has a queen bed with canopy mosquito net, a built in desk, a small sink (with running water) and mirror and small porch. Just outside the bedroom is a half bathroom with flushing toilet. The kitchen, connected to the bedroom by a bridge has a full size sink, half size frig, toaster oven, 1 burner gas stove, plenty of counter space and built in couch/bench that can sleep a 3rd person, but it's narrow and not very comfortable for sleeping (which is why it's a 2 person listing). The bathroom in a separate tree, has flushing toilet and shower with 2 heads, one is cold only and one has hot and cold. Plenty of privacy but open air with a view. It has a ladder access. The view deck, called the Awarenest is about 30' up with quite an amazing view. It's accessible by a series of ladders, so not for the faint of heart. It's a great spot for yoga, meditation or just relaxing on top of the world. It's in the tallest, highest tree in the area. I say highest because it's also at the top of a little hill. It's truely one of a kind.
It’s 15 min drive to the Montezuma beach and about 25 min drive to Mal Pais and Santa Teresa Beaches. It’s nicely settled in the hills between them. Also about 15 minutes from Cobano, the largest town in the area for supplies, etc. Those times change based on road conditions. It’s not actually very far, but you wont’ be driving super fast. There’s a wonderful authentic Italian restaurant located close by, in the middle of no where. Their pizza is amazing and cooked in a wood fired home made earth oven, hence the restaurants name, Tierra Y Fuego (earth and fire). They are only open Thursday-Sunday and closed for most of Sept/Oct.
  • Very nice place and it is an experience to live! The view is incredible and we can hear the monkeys! The place is very safe with a lot of equipment in the kitchen. I would definitely recommend that place in Montezuma.

  • Had a great stay at the treehouse. I would definitely recommend it.

  • The Tree House was a great experience and just as advertised. I highly recommend it! On your drive in stop at the Mega Super (grocery store) just south of the main intersection in Cobano. Stock up on all your supplies there!

  • What a fantastic stay! Not sure where to begin. First off, Joseph is incredibly helpful and resposive when organizing details. The farm itself is such a lovely place with fantastic people living and working there. If you can arrange it, have meals with them! The food is grown on the farm, is prepared perfectly, and is delicious. The perfect trifecta :) The treehouse itself-- what talent to build this! It's a true treehouse as described. Built into the tree and is very well constructed with full electric and water. We were lucky enough to have the resident howler monkeys hanging in the tree above us for a couple days. Great way to get a close up and observe these furry friends. Well worth a visit!

  • This was one of the best accomodation for us in Costa (Website hidden by Airbnb) special! Awesome experience!!the treehouses was clean and cosy!you have everything you need.

  • We loved our stay in the treehouse! What an awesome experience!! Such a well designed and kitted out treehouse. Really comfortable bed with a decent mossie-net (essential!), well equiped kitchen and spotlessly clean. A group of howler monkeys came and hung out in the tree which was very cool.

  • The Sacred Geome Treehouse was a truly unique experience unlike any other Airbnb out there, and my girlfriend and I are really glad we stayed here. You're totally immersed in nature in this treehouse and we really enjoyed falling asleep to all of the nature sounds each night and waking to the colorful sunrises each morning. The swinging bed was really cool and comfortable (thank god for the mosquito net!), and the outdoor shower was really enjoyable, too. Note - this treehouse may not be everyone. When we first arrived, the place was overrun with thousands of ants (which we scared off for the remainder of our stay), and we encountered a variety of other bugs throughout our stay. This was to be expected given the circumstances, but if you are at all bug squeamish, this may be too much "nature" for you. We did not interact with Joseph, but the volunteer manager (Julio, I believe) was really nice and gave us a tour of the property. The farm is completely organic and extremely impressive.

  • This place is so very beautiful. The craftsmanship of the treehouse is outstanding and the view from the bedroom is phenomenal. The kitchen is the perfect size, and everything about the space is efficient. I would love to live in something like this.

  • Marina was so kind when we arrived and super helpful. Her house was beautiful and relaxing. It's super central, really convenient and a great place to stay. Definitely stay there if you're in Tamarindo!

  • This was our first Airbnb experience and it definitely will not be our last. Casa Mambo was just as described and then some...a delightful getaway within easy walking distance of everything Tamarindo has to offer. Rustic, more than adequately equipped for all our needs, artfully and tastefully decorated so that every moment there was a delight. Our host was helpful, even met us to deliver the key and walk us to our home away from home.

  • Really great location, close to the beach and main street yet have your own privacy! I woke up one morning with monkeys hanging on the tree outside of the house. Overall a great experience!!

  • Great location and Marina was a great host! The house is perfect for two. We absolutely loved the porch! There were monkeys every morning and we also enjoyed the daily visits from the cats. Great experience and would recommend :)

  • DO NOT STAY AT CASA MAMBO!! We made our reservation 6 months in advance in hopes of staying in a quaint surf house. When we arrived, we were told to meet at the nearby hotel. We were greeted by an upset hotel employee that was furious that the owners continuously have their guests meet there. Once the owner came to meet us, he brought us up the dilapidated path to casa mambo. The place looks pretty similar to the pictures but it's very low with no views of anything at all. It is sunk into the property and doesn't get any cross breeze or much natural light. As soon as we went inside, we almost passed out it was so hot. The temperature in Costa Rica is between 90-95 everyday and usually high 70s at night. The only air conditioner is in the bedroom and it barely works. The bathroom and the living space aren't livable. We couldn't be in either area for more than 5 minutes without breaking into a sweat. We aren't afraid of roughing it but having no AC makes it unbearable. We quickly decided after one night we couldn't stay here, we did not sleep at all because it was so hot, even with the AC on full blast and no sheets. When we kindly asked the owners to refund us part of our money, they said it was not possible because they had already spent it. We spent $1,000 on a place that advertised having AC (which was equivalent to a fan 50feet away) and then had to pay another $1,500 for a hotel that actually did have AC. It was an expensive lesson to learn, don't make the same mistake we did. You're better off in a hotel with real AC.

  • My wife and I stayed at Casa Mumbo for our honeymoon, everything was absolutely perfect! So close to all the attractions and the beach. We had an amazing time, and it's a perfect place for a tropical and relaxing getaway! Highly recommend!

  • Marina and Alex were great hosts! Very welcoming and warm, I would recommend anyone to stay here! The perfect Costa Rican living experience...

  • A beautiful and very unique (in a great way) house! The house feels like it was built by the earth. Marina and Alex were very respectful and communicative. Tamarindo, if you do not know, is a bustling town and the house is nestled close to restaurants and the beach. Once you park your car you can walk everywhere.

  • Amnon was like a family member waiting your arrival. He kept making sure you arrived well and everything was in line. The place was just like the photograph and the apartment was roomy and excellent. The condo is right off the main road but far away for you not to hear and traffic. It's just a few blocks away from the beach and the main strip. There are plenty of supermarkets around to get groceries at and Amnon provided us with an excellent summary of places to go and things to do. So happy we stayed there, felt very safe and the placed was kept in better shape than some high-priced hotels I have stayed at before

  • Amon was extremely good at getting back to me in a timely manner. He planned a ride for us to and from SAN Jose with Carlos who was very friendly. The property was quiet and the pool area beautiful. The kitchen was well (Website hidden by Airbnb) was a short cab ride to town.We like to walk so we only took a cab at night as it is a bit dark. I would definitely stay here again.

  • Very nice place. Quiet but still walkable to town and shops. Very good facilities and fabulous swimming pool. Security gate covered 24 hours so felt safe leaving possessions. Some very interesting bird life. Great Wifi which was a real benefit. Also an simple to operate washer dyer for laundry. Thanks Amnon

  • This place is awesome! If you want to travel to costa and get the best of what she offers come here! The home was very clean furnished and modern, the ac was amazing compared to the humidity outside. Amni responded immediately to all questions and concerns, provided 2 bikes, the beach is 10 minutes away riding and all of downtown jaco. This was my honeymoon and first trip to Costa Rica! I would highly recommend! Pura Vida!

  • Great place, very clean and comfortable and close to the beach! Great host also :)

  • Everything was incredible amazing

  • We loved that the condo was beautiful & we felt very safe. The neighborhood was kind of scary when we arrived late but we felt safe enough to walk. There are lots of good places to eat & things to do nearby.

  • A lock box to get the keys is a good idea, gives flexibility. Friendly security guard at the gate 24hrs...... just great service.

Just minutes to and from SJO airport (2.3 km), this cosy cabin with 3 bedrooms is perfect for families. Set in a garden with lovely mountain views, it is close to all amenities and public transport to surrounding towns. Excellent wifi. Currently we are not able to provide a served breakfast, but we do leave the fridge stocked with basics to make coffee and toast in the morning!
Stay with us on your first and last night in Costa Rica. Just 3 kms. from the airport, our guest house is the most comfortable alternative to big chain hotels and perfect for travelers who need a convenient location, close to the international airport, and to major towns in the Central Valley, such as San José, Santa Ana, Alejuela, Heredia, and Escazu. Although our guest house is in an urban setting, it has a rural feeling, surrounded by lush vegetation and with a great view of the mountains. Visitors enjoy HIGH SPEED WIRELESS INTERNET. Light housekeeping is provided for renters who stay more than 2 nights. Breakfast available upon request for an additional charge. Although we are on a main road, finding it may be challenging, since there are no road signs here in Costa Rica. The land marks you will be looking for are the La Ribera Cemetery (125 metres west of), the Mormon temple (200 metres west of), and the Montessori preschool across the road. If you have a smart phone, please download (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN), and send me your cell phone number. I will send the map link to your phone and you can open (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) maps or waze to get here. Please advise us the day prior to your arrival of your approximate arrival time. We will be waiting for you. And note that our doorbell is not working. We require a call or honk from the road!
The area of San Antonio de Belén and La Ribera are considered among the finest neighborhoods to live in in Costa Rica. Almost everything you´d want is close at hand, such as a variety of supermarkets, fresh fruit and veggie markets, restaurants, beauty salons, recreation centres, shopping and cinemas, artesania, churches and community centres. Our favorite local restaurants include La Riviera, Cangrejo Rojo Marisqueria, and Cerdo at the Commercial Centre La Ribera. All are just a 5 minute walk away and it is safe to walk in the evening. Visitors to Costa Rica may be surprised that it gets dark by 6 PM all year round! It is considered a safe area, so you don´t have to be overly concerned about security, although we recommend locking your doors, closing the gate securely behind you and being careful when you take money out of the ATM machine and not carrying a lot of cash on you. Because we are so close to the airport, there are many rent-a-car agencies close by. If you do decide to rent a vehicle, you can ask the agency to drop off and /or pick up your vehicle here at the guest house.
  • Marie was totally welcoming and sweet- we enjoyed chatting with her about babies (she's a midwife and "we" are pregnant!). The rustic cabin served the purpose well- we got to unwind close to the airport and roll out of bed the next morning to be at the airport in 5 minutes. Nothing too fancy except for the bathroom which I thought was super cool looking. I think I want to make my bathroom the same style!

  • Marie was a great host! Her rental unit was very nice and close to everything you need in the city! She was there to assist for anything we needed. Highly recommended.

  • we (two couples) stayed here the first two nights as well as the last night of our trip to Costa Rica. Marie was not in the country the first days but Luis, her husband, took care of us and helped with whatever we needed. As we arrived in the evening before we left back home, Marie had provided us with all basic things we needed for breaktfast which was just perfect!! Thank you again!! The transfer from the Airport to the house is very fast bay taxi (around 5000 colones/10 USD), yet being a bit adventurous since there is no house numbers. But the taxi driver called Luis who explained to him where their property is located. If you arrive with a car there are some landmarks which help you to find it and you can park in front of the house on their property which is great! The house itself is very cute, being located in the garden of Marie and Luis' home. It is rustic, clean (although you might find some ants or smaller insects of course) and spacious for up to 5 people. There is a big kitchen with all the tools you need to cook including a big fridge as well as a washing machine! Since there is one queensize bed, one single bed and a bunk bed one couple of us had to take the bunk bed, which was funny being reminded to our childhood. The house is an optimal possibility to stay close to San José (a taxi ride to the central shopping area costs about 12000colones which is ok for 4 people, there is also a train we were too lazy to take and the busses only go in the morning and the afternoon) and to get to the airport easily. For the evenings there is a nice commercial area 200 m from the house where you have a huge supermarket, a farmacy, several restaurants and bars (the churrascaria is great!) and others. All in all we loved our stay there and would definitely come back!

  • We stayed at Marie's twice during our Costa Rica trip. Thanks so much again for a lovely experience! Marie, you are one of the best hosts I've ever met on Airbnb. If I could give you 10 stars, I totally would! All the best! x

  • Marie is very welcoming and friendly. I had wonderful time. Marie has a perfect home for someone who wants to know what it is like to live in Costa Rica.

  • Marie was very welcoming. She even went to the market and bought us some fresh fruit and bread. The cabin is a great value for a family with children but for a 2 people, it may be more comfortable just to get a hotel room for a few bucks more. Nonetheless, the place is secure. It is on a busy street and there are dogs on the premises and nearby homes for those that are sound sensitive.

  • Great location and stay near SJO.

  • This house is lovely. The grounds are amazing and well kept. The house was clean, quiet, and had tons of character. Marie was extremely helpful with anything we needed (she even left bread, jam, and a pineapple for us). It is close to the market, restraunts, and the airport. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a relaxing place to stay around the airport in San Jose. My two daughters and I wished we could have stayed longer. If I could give more than 5 stars I would. Muchas gracias to Marie!

Sabura is an African expression that means good life, moments of joy and happiness, which is what you will experience during your stay with us.
Casa Sabura is a charming Balinese style house decorated with handcrafted furniture from Africa, Asia and Costa Rica. It is situated only 1km from Playa Avellanas, one of the best surfing beaches in Costa Rica. This 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house features a private pool, a wraparound deck and outdoor lounging areas in a lush jungle setting. Casa Sabura is custom built with floor to ceiling windows surrounding the house. The master bedroom features a king size bed, the second upstairs bedroom has two twin beds. Each room has a sliding door which leads to the wraparound deck. Both rooms are equipped with their own independent A/C units. The third bedroom, located on the ground floor, features a queen size bed and is adjacent to the second bathroom with a shower. The surrounding property creates a lush, tropical ambience and connection with nature. Enjoy your morning coffee while monkeys climb from tree to tree and parrots fly overhead. Although Casa Sabura is situated in a secluded environment, it is still close to several restaurants including Lola’s, one of the most famous in Costa Rica. The town of Tamarindo is only a 25 minute drive away, making it easy to stock up on supplies and spend time in a more touristy area if you wish. Your time at Casa Sabura will be an experience to remember forever. Pura Vida (You will hear this expression throughout your time in Costa Rica. Simply translated it means “pure or simple life”. But here in Costa Rica, it is more than just a saying. It’s an emotion, it’s an attitude, it’s happiness and it’s a way of life.)
  • The host canceled this reservation 73 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.

  • We arrived at Casa Sabura later in the evening and was fortunate enough to be guided by Fabrice to Casa Sabura safe and sound. We didn't have the opportunity to meet Andre and Rita but they checked in with us via email and provided us with an adequate support system in case we needed anything during our stay. The home itself was even prettier than the pictures. It was a great setup for 5 adults as the patio and pool area were great for those lazy evenings sharing dinner outside and enjoy time togher. On the other hand, the home provided us with ample space to have some alone time if you need be. The area surrounding the home was quiet and isolated from the touristy areas which we welcomed for this type of Holiday. That being said, if you are seeking some nightlife and boutique shops this location will not be your cup of tea. The plus side of being located in a more rustic setting were evident to us early on. We were walking distance (15-20min) to the beautiful beach and some great spots to grab lunch or do some surfing at Playa Avallenas. We experienced a great Holiday!!!

  • Great remote hideout! Very pleasant contrast with the more tourism oriented town of Tamarindo. Feels like being in the middle of the jungle, with a still 'undiscovered' beach close by.

  • This is a great place for vacation. Beautiful house with lots of small details that make everyone feel in peace and relaxed. Great location and secure. Be careful to use the correct road to get to the house. "Waze" will send you through a terrible road for the last mile. Not a big deal, just listen carefully for the directions from your hosts and don't trust Waze!

  • We loved Casa Sabura! The house is comfortable and beautifully decorated. The kitchen has all the necessities for cooking. The pool is lovely. AC is soooo nice, since it was very hot and humid! We heard so many amazing animal sounds at night, with the house being tucked up on the edge of the jungle. There are 2 bedrooms inside the main part of the house (on the 2nd floor), and one bedroom downstairs that you need to go outside and down the outdoor staircase to access... just something to be aware of with young kids who might want to sleep near their parents. We had such a nice stay.

  • Very warm welcome from Fabrice with recommendations for local restaurants and beaches.

  • Casa Sabura was is an amazing place to stay. Just as described in the photos, great for our family of 4 (two adults and two kids). The kitchen is stocked with everything you might need, AC works well (especially in the bedrooms and you WILL need it in the non-rainy season-- it gets HOT outside!), pool is refreshing and the hosts were more than accommodating. Quick and easy ride to get to the best beach around (Playa Avellanos), plus a 25 minute drive to Tamarindo for supermarket, tourist spots, and lots of restaurants. Would highly recommend! Thank you Andre and Rita!

  • Wonderful stay and beautiful house! This house in the middle of the costa rican rainforest may be just what you need for your next vacation, it is peaceful, quiet, and relaxing. The kitchen was fully equipped, the bathrooms were nice and clean, comfortable bedrooms and nice pool. If you're visiting, keep in mind that the house is literally in the middle of a dirt road, surrounded by thick vegetation, so expect visits from the friendly neighbors--the bugs! We didn't encounter with any dangerous ones, only moths, beetles, and TONS of centipedes, but they were a nice sight and didn't get much in our way. The roads to get to the house can get lousy in the rainy season, it would be best if you could get your hands on a 4x4! Finally, this is house is one of the listings closest to the beach, which makes it easy for you to go down there as often as you'd like.

The Balinese-style villa called The Pavilion at the Manu Reserve is hidden among 30 acres of lush tropical Rain Forest in Hatillo, just 10 minutes from Dominical on Costa Rica's Central Pacific Coast.
The main Pavilion features a simplistic but elegant design and houses the kitchen the main living and dining area and a separate master bedroom under one iron wood shingled roof. Right next to it is a separate sleeping pavilion with its two symmetrical bedrooms and two bathrooms. The incredible balance of sand, sea and mountains makes Dominical a destination worth traveling to. It has clockwork sunsets with a fiery glaze, and dark volcanic sands that warm the ocean to balmy temperatures. Moments away from the beach are pools of fresh water and natural waterfalls that cascade down the mountainside. Dominical lays on the Southern Pacific Ocean and is bordered to the north by the Río Barú, a freshwater river that runs from the mountains into the ocean. creating a rushing current that you can find and track as you walk along the beach. To the east 3000-foot mountains create a cloud forest, and to the south dark volcanic ash creates coffee colored beaches and coves. Since the main part of the town of Dominical is set slightly back from the beach, it seems to magically disappear as you drift into the water, leaving only the tall beach palms and mangroves surrounded by fertile green hills to guide you along the coastline. The international surfing community has known Dominical Costa Rica for many years. It became a destination in the early seventies by a group of spirited and dedicated surfers, and because of its consistently good waves Dominical has steadily gained in popularity over the last 30 years. The town has become a haven for surfers, with local restaurants offering “Starving Surfer” specials and nonstop surf videos. The unusual conditions of the beach give the surf its size, dependability and the gentle run off and white water splash that also make it perfect for learning. The wave is a beach break with a twist that originates from the mouth of the Río Barú to the north. The river empties out of the mountains to the east and deposits sediments that form into a sand bar that spreads like a pair of sleepy rabbit ears north and south of the mouth. Only recently have people discovered and been attracted by its natural beauty. Not more than fifteen years ago the only buildings to be found were a few dilapidated fishing huts built by local fishermen. Since then the town has grown to over 700 permanent residents with a number of small beachfront restaurants, bars and cabins. Even with the emergence and growth of the town, it is possible to walk from one end of Dominical to the other in less than ten minutes. The area surrounding Dominical, especially to the south, is almost completely unpopulated. Because of this, the area is full of hundreds of different species of exotic animals including; three different types of toucans, giant green and red iguanas, all four types of native monkeys, parrots of all sizes and hues, three toed sloths and various small cats such as jaguarondis and montegordos. There are two national reserves (Hacienda Baru) in the immediate area, and three more only an additional hour and a half away (Manuel Antonio National Park, Corcovado National Park and Caño Island National Preserve) . To the south is the country’s underwater national park, Marino Ballena. Here it is possible to see a pristine underwater world with scores of multi-colorful marine creatures, coral reefs and jagged, ash black, volcanic rocks and tide pools. In a country full of beautiful views, lush landscapes, tropical attractions, and cloud forests, Dominical has the perfect balance between walking on soft sand or hiking along fresh water streams.
  • We were greeted and guided up the road by Rodney on his ATV. Rodney was awesome and showed us around the property and to the added amenities we weren't even expecting. The view alone was worth the trip and the stay but the experience of the house on top of that made it exceptional. You need to know what you're doing with a 4x4 to get there and around the area, but this too made the adventure all the more real. We had to be organized to leave with all we needed for the day because you can't simply stop by the house if you forget something. This worked great for our family as we set out to split time with activity and relaxing together. We made it a priority to watch the sunset from the infinity pool each night we were there and those are the memories that we will never forget. Rodney also provided excellent advice and explanation of the tours in the area. We went to Hacienda Baru for the canopy tour and saw tons of wildlife and he directed us to different beaches for different levels of surf breaks. Rodney also cooked our thanksgiving meal right at the house with tuna steak, steak, mashed sweet potatoes, vegetables and a grilled pineapple/ice cream dessert. We have lived in Costa Rica for a couple years and this was our favorite combination of accommodation and experience. Our group had one teenager, 3 in their 20's, and 2 close to 50 years old. For that dynamic, and what we wanted, I would say that Bali Pavilion was perfect. I would hesitate to take just any group or age up the mountain away from the convenience of being a little closer to town and shops/restaurants. We plan to return again soon. Thanks Rodney and Alexander. Pura Vida.

  • We were speechless at our arrival really. No words can describe the moment we walked on the property. We were picked up by Rodney at a small Soda at the bottom of the hill and followed him to the house. 4x4 advised. But very fun road to drive. The house itself was stunning. Clean, spacious, amazing pool with a breathtaking view. Fully equipped of course. You have to check it out when in Costa Rica. It's unique. Can't stress that enough! We will definitely remember it for our next visit!

  • This property is a secluded paradise! We saw monkeys, toucans, frogs, and gorgeous butterflies all while relaxing in the infinity pool and enjoying the view of the ocean. Make sure to stop for groceries before making your way to the house because you will not want to leave!

  • Look no further. Truly paradise on Earth! Such an amazing secluded villa with room for plenty of people. We saw more wildlife than ANY of the parks we visited, including Manuel Antonio. We saw toucans, lizards, dart frogs, and monkeys every day. This is a great place for families and couple alike. Must book today!!

  • The Bali Pavilion is a unique house with an incredible view. We are a couple who stayed 6 nights in May 2017. We had no trouble using Waze to navigate from the San Jose airport to the identified meeting point. It was easy communicating with Rodney via the (Hidden by Airbnb) . He met us at the restaurant and showed us up to the house. Our first drive up was a little intimidating as it was dark and raining. A 4x4 is definitely necessary. Having Rodney to follow up to the property the first time was helpful as the property is not identified on map apps, including Waze, and roads are not identified. We recommend paying attention to the roads on the way up as there are a few areas you could take a wrong turn. We quickly adjusted to the terrain and enjoyed the drive to and from the house. About half way through our trip road construction started on part of the route, creating holes in the meandering road. This was challenging to navigate and did decrease the enjoyment of the drive, but that didn't deter us from going in to town - we just had to take our time and pay closer attention as the holes changed daily. If you are arriving after dark we would recommend stopping by a grocery store before meeting Rodney to go up to the house. We were glad to have stopped to buy food and coffee for the morning. The kitchen does have a coffee maker and blender. We enjoyed coffee on the deck/in the pool and making fresh smoothies daily. Enjoying the views never got old. It was hard to leave the house to explore Costa Rica, as one could simply enjoy the house and views all day. We did quite a bit of exploring but also bought food to be able to enjoy several meals at the property. There is a grill on the deck which we used several times. We visited as the rainy season was starting. It rained at some point every afternoon and/or evening. We still enjoyed every day of our trip despite the rain. Be aware that when it is raining the internet/cable in the house may be affected. This did not bother us as by the time we were back to the house in the evenings we were ready to sleep, but there were a few evenings that the internet/cable was out due to the rain. Overall the house was incredible - a view from almost every place in the home. We loved the outdoor shower attached to the master bedroom in the main building. If you prefer an enclosed shower there are two to choose from in the guest house a few steps away from the main house. We looked in the second building to check it out but didn't need to use it since it was just the two of us. We would recommend not leaving any clothing in the outdoor shower. One evening a...

  • Amazing!!! The most spectacular view we saw in Costa Rica! We thoroughly enjoyed the infinity pool and outdoor shower. As some other reviews I read already noted, the pictures don't do it justice. The art work and decorations were so interesting and beautiful. My only complaint is that we didn't stay longer! We only booked it for three nights, which wasn't long enough. Some words of advice...I would do your grocery shopping before you go to the house b/c once you get up there, you really don't want to leave for awhile!

  • This place is as amazing as it looks! This incredible property combined with the excellent assistance of the caretaker/concierge/local wildlife expert/optional private chef Rodney and owner Alexandar, made this one of those rare listings and trips that exceeded my expectations. The amazing local wildlife (Tucans, Coati, Frogs and Iguanas to name just a few!) made hanging around the house and the pool for our writing retreat an even greater pleasure. Also for those concerned by previous reviews, the safety measures have been improved and we had no issues. I only hesitate to leave this review because I don't want to spoil this remote treasure and hope to return!

  • Hands-down fantastic! We (2 ppl) stayed for 6 nights during the rainy season (late Sept., early Oct.) and had a beautifully relaxing stay at Alexander's Bali-style compound. The pool was spotless and elegant, the house was spic and span, and we had no trouble with either mosquitoes or other insects. A cute little turquoise and black frog hopped in and out over the days (a poison dart frog, so don't touch), but it was completely interested in keeping to itself. The outdoor shower at the main house had amazing water pressure and plenty of hot water. We saw no monkeys or other large animals, but the bird scene was happening each morning and late afternoon into the evening. Each day the rains came in the late afternoon and often lasted through the night. But each morning, the sun shone brightly and warm! The huge eaves of the house shelter the terrace, and we wouldn't have wanted it any other way than sitting with a nice glass of wine, an appetizer, a good book, each other, and the spectacular view. A toad family came to hang out at the pool in the rain each night and had a lot to talk about. Tips: Do your grocery shopping in Heradura or Quepos on the way. Both have large supermarkets where you can get a wide range of items, from fresh fish and meat to dried pasta and the best Avocados you've ever had. Rent a 4x4 for the drives to and from the house. The road is very well maintained, and mostly paved, but it is only about the width of your vehicle and has some steep ups and downs. My husband LOVED it, but we did not eat dinner out because there are (naturally) no street lamps and it would be pretty intense in the dark. We love to cook and the kitchen at Alexander's is a dream, so this was in no way a hardship!!! I suggest saving your dining out for lunch-time, where you can find many delicious local sodas (cafes) to enjoy. We used the gas bbq on a couple of evenings and made some amazing roasted jalapeño and tomatillo salsa. The convenient blender in the kitchen made short work of a delicious snack! Be prepared for food inside to be attacked by micro-ants if you leave it unsealed. We just either sealed everything or put it in the fridge. No big deal, and the ants are almost microscopic. This is a good idea due to the humidity anyway. There's a nice big tupperware-style container in the kitchen that we found to work perfectly for chips and bread. Zip-lock bags are easy to find at the store and were our best friends. As the pictures show, the house is Balinese and as such has big double doors along three of its sides that open completely for a total open air experience. There are also places in the main house's main room that are closed to the outside only...

Feel the beat of San Jose! Industrial Style Studio in the heart of town, six minutes walk to museums, National Theater, and points of interest down town. You will also enjoy typical food restaurants and great coffee shops! The bus terminals are five to ten minute walk, just 25 to 35 minutes from the airport. My place is perfect for back packers, couples, friends traveling together or if you are more of a lonely traveler you will feel safe and comfortable. Self check in is available.
Small Industrial Style studio apartment perfect for a couple of days stay in San Jose or it can also be great if you plan a longer stay. It is in a six floor building that has been in the family for almost fifty years now, it used to be an office complex and for many years it was the home of the offices for a very prestigious international bank. After the bank Left, I decided to change the purpose of the building and remodel it for living purposes, Studio #404 is one of the twelve apartments that make up for the condominium. It is small, very cozy and it has everything you will need for a pleasent stay, it's fully equipped with all the amenities , kitchen, microwave, coffee maker, refrigerator, toaster, you will find all you need to cook, there is even a screw cork in case you are in a mood for some wine. It has a full size bunk bed and a pull over couch, which can accommodate comfortably an adult or a small child. There is a dinning table which sits three very comfortably. It has access to internet and digital television with a 24 " TV, you can count with hot water and a very nice and comfortable shower with body gel and shampoo. The apartment is Located on the fourth floor, on the Street side of the building, and there is an elevator.
The place is located close to down town hotels, parks and museums, it is in the heart of San Jose Down town. Although San José has a population of less than three hundred thousand it is a hop all provinces and more than one million people come and go everyday, in consequence it is a very busy and crowded city during the day and lonely at night. The studio is in the fourth floor of the building to the side of the street, it can get noisy in certain hours of the day, but it is quiet at night. Like any city that you are getting to know you should never be over confident.
  • Marie's place was great, clean, and secure. Being in a city and in a different country can be intimidating, however with the help of Marie we were able to enjoy or stay with no stress. The building is very safe and clean. Marie also provided us with great tips and locations we can visit during our stay in San Jose. Thank you Marie !

  • Marie was super helpful with finding activities to do and arranging transportation. The apartment is super central, great for getting around but can be a little noisy at night due to the bus station being across the street. Great location and super cute!

  • The apartment was the the perfect place for my friend and I to begin our travels in Costa Rica.

  • Communication with Marie was easy, and she delivered what she promised. Marie had to change my reservation to a different apartment across the street, so I can't directly review this particular unit. However, the other unit was very clean, modern, and the pictures were accurate. (The unit I stayed in is listed on Air BnB as well). I imagine this unit is accurately depicted as well.

  • Fantastic apartment in centre of San Jose. Modern design, kitchen, really comfortable bed, spotlessly clean. Great location, supermarkets and restaurants nearby in a safe location. Marie was a great host, booked us airport transfers, was there to greet us and provide useful info on the neighbourhood. This was the perfect apartment to start our Costa Rica and is much better than a hotel. We would thoroughly recommend Marie 's apartment.

  • Marie is a great host! She made me feel comfortable and the check in and check out was smooth process. The apartment is located across the street from a bus stop. So except the city noise! Super close to the supermarkets and shopping areas. When I did some tours, I only had to walk a block or two to the nearest hotel. On top of it, the apartment super safe! Thank you Marie and positive vibes to you!

  • This was a great and easy place to stay! Marie was incredible in helping us get from the airport and offering options to see. Would absolutely stay here again!

  • We had a great time! Marie was of great help she provided us a contact for a driver which made it really easy to find the apartment as he picked us from the airport and was very helpful. Would definitely recommend!

Wake to the sound of howler monkeys, toucans and parrots and enjoy your first cup of locally-grown coffee on our enormous 25 sq. m. covered deck. At night, watch the lava flows or count the stars overhead. Our home features a splash pool to cool off after a busy day of eco-adventuring. You can walk to many attractions in the village, including several quaint local restaurants. The home features casual dining indoor or out, hot water throughout, and stunning views from every room. It is completely equipped with a full-sized fridge with ice-maker, gas stove, microwave and blender and includes twice-weekly cleaning service (more often optional on request). An optional personal laundry service is also available. Active or passive, this is the perfect home base for your Arenal vacation! In the last few months, we've been busy landscaping our property. We now feature a paved driveway, a separate covered Gazebo (perfect for al fresco dining) and the yard has been completely enclosed with a custom-made 5' stone and wrought-iron fence. El Castillo is an authentic Tico village. The horses and cattle will pass your door each day. The locals are very friendly and will happily stop and chat. There are a couple of small groceries in the village and several restaurants, but walk up the mountain road a bit and you will be in the jungle with spectacular views in all directions.
  • This house was AMAZING! It is located at the top of the hill and overlooks the town, lake, and volcano. We ended up leaving the airport around 7:30pm and made our way to the house. I only recommend if you are up for adventure! The last 10km were on a pretty rough road but it's all about the adventure and 4x4 vehicle. The house was well stocked and spectacular. We walked to town for groceries and stopped by Hannah and Thomas's shop, super cute. Thomas was also helpful and arranged a driver to take us to the free hot springs and back. I would definitely stay at this house again!

  • Staying here was the highlight of our trip! We were so in love with this incredible house with its most amazing views. The host Hanna was very acknowledgeable and can make sandwhiches for your hikes. The stable a few house down can personally give you one of the most awesome trail rides passing rivers and seeing the meadows and of course always the view of the Volcano and the lake. You certainly need a AWD but their directions are excellent. Do plan accordingly because you can't get here if you plane arrives too late. But it is so worth it and the home is very well decorated and with much modern amenities. I can't wait to return soon.

  • A magical place with over the top views. The house was immaculate, beautifully furnished and well equipped. It had everything you would need to feel comfortable. You definitely need a 4x4 to get around the area. Hannah and Tomas are lovely people, generous and kind. Thanks!

  • The house in El Castillo exceeded our expectations. It is stunning and provides views of all the beauty around you. We particularly enjoyed the all-season porch that was connected to both bedrooms. Be prepared for a fun and bumpy ride for the last 100 meters or so but other than that trip from La Fortuna and back is a piece of cake. If you love adventure, this is the spot for you. We hope to return again!

  • This home could not have been better. We absolutely loved it! The views are even more amazing in person, they are breathtaking. The little town was so fun to exlplore. Each place place we ate had great food-Fusion, Venetia and pizza johns are all a must for lunch or dinner and essence of arenal was the perfect spot for breakfast with a view. Driving the roads around the area can be a little rough but if you have a 4x4 you will be fine! Make sure you take lilanders horse tour, he was great and the tour was a once in a lifetime experience. We lived every second of our stay in el Castillo and hope to return some day.

  • Our experience of the area was amazing! It was very refreshing to have a small town experience that far away. The air was fresh and crisp. The people were very welcoming and friendly. The house and view were beyond description. We could hear the river in the valley across the street running. Truly loved every minute of it. We were actually sad when we had to leave. John your place is beautiful and you are fortunate to have it! Thanks again.

  • Everything was perfect in El castillo en las nuebes. You really feel like being in a castle in the clouds. The view and the house are even better than in the pictures. Contact with Joe was always clear and friendly! Thank you for sharing your beautiful place.
