***We are monitoring the Covid-19 situation and hope to open more dates soon*** Stay in a 20m2 geodesic dome in a secluded location in rural Northumberland. With a wood fired hot tub, fire pit, and deck with beautiful views of the pond and surrounding trees, it's a perfect spot to relax, unwind and get back to nature. The site is completely off grid - water in containers, solar power, and composting toilet. We believe this makes the site special, offering a unique back-to-basics experience.
Our ethos is to provide a simple but comfortable, tranquil space to 'unplug' from the modern world, with a minimal impact on the surrounding nature so that it can be enjoyed. Please read our description fully before booking to ensure that our dome and site is perfect for you. Satori dome is located on a working farm alongside a large pond. Spend your time watching wild ducks and swans through the panoramic bay window, or explore North Northumeberland before heading back to your site for a soak in the outdoor Japanese soaking tub, whilst star gazing from the deck. Our dome is set up for 2 people with a double bed and Eve© memory foam mattress (bedding is provided.) LED battery fairy lights and lanterns provide mood lighting inside and outside the dome at night, and logs are provided for the wood burning stove and fire to keep you cosy when it is cold outside. Outside on the deck is a gas BBQ for cooking and inside there is a worktop and sink set up for prepping simple meals and washing up dishes (plates, cutlery and utensils provided.) A camp stove and kettle is also provided if you wish to boil water for teas and coffee. A leisure battery powers a small 24 Litre electric cool box to keep food items cool. The battery also has a USB port to charge your devices. Our simple off-grid sink is setup with a 25 litre container of fresh spring water and hand pump tap for washing up. Your outdoor hot tub will be filled with fresh spring water for your arrival. It can be used 2-3 times and takes 2-4 hours to heat up (depending on the weather/season), and will usually stay warm overnight. Please note that in keeping with our ethos of having a low impact on the surrounding nature, soaps are NOT allowed to be used in the tub because of the harm they could cause to the aquatic life of the pond when the tub is drained. We do not (yet) have a shower at the dome, for most people this is not a problem as the hot tub water is clean and does not contain any chemicals, and makes you feel fresh afterwards. The Eco friendly composting toilet is set back from the dome. Whilst it is basic, please be assured that it is both clean and civilised :)
The site is rural (no postcode and the closest neighbours are sheep), but is not far from a main road with easy access to the market towns Wooler (10 mins), Alnwick (20 mins) and Berwick-upon-Tweed (30 mins), as well as the stunning coast (40 mins). There are plenty of local pubs and shops within an approximate 10 minute drive. The location is great for those seeking to explore Chillingham Castle, The Cheviot hills, Ingram Valley, Bamburgh Beach and many other spectacular locations.
  • We had such a lovely couple of days here! It was easy to find with the directions given, the dome was super clean and we had the most relaxing couple of days. Would highly recommend Hugh & Liz's place and we would love to come back in the summer.

  • I booked this stay for my partner's 30th birthday weekend and I can honestly say it did not disappoint. From start to finish the entire stay was perfect. The directions were so simple to follow, the drive alone was so scenic and beautiful. When we arrived we were amazed at how secluded the pod was and how peaceful and calming the environment was. The entire place was immaculate and had amazing touches such as mood lighting, playing cards etc. More than enough logs for the tub stove, log burner and campfire. Tub was absolutely incredible after a long day out. I would 1000% book up to stop here again. Thank you so much for having us.

  • Really lovely place to stay- bigger in person as well. Would recommend

    Kayleigh2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • Wow! Wow! Wow! This place does everything you think it would do and more. My wife and I spent 3 nights in the Dome and it felt like we had gone away for weeks! Hugh and Liz have a Gem of a location. The dome is so well situated and equipped that it is so easy to relax and enjoy the nature around you! The sounds of nature are like a sleeping drug for the soul. We did a day trip to Edinburgh which was as little as an hour and a half away, I mean hello... I recommend this place big time for people who just want things to slow down a little and get refreshed. Thank you for your great hospitality Hugh and Liz!

  • Great place, bigger on the inside than it looks from the outside. Complete isolation and a great view of the lake. Wood burning fire for inside and for the hot tub - plenty of logs provided. The bed is comfortable and the utilities do a basic job well. If you're into this sort of thing, this is just right.

  • Simply a wonderful experience, so peaceful and relaxing. The dome and its location are stunning, even in the middle of February! Using the hot tub under the blackest starry sky I’ve ever seen was blissful. I was worried about the toilet, but it was clean and very hygienic. It took us mire like 5 hours to heat up the tub, but only because we were being a little too cautious. Definitely leave the ash pan open a little on the hot tub stove to get the fire roaring and I’m sure it could be done in 3 hours. We left the curtains open to watch for shooting stars; just wonderful. We will stay there again in the summer or autumn to experience better weather, but this did not detract from a wonderful break.

    Michelle2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • What a fantastic place to get away and switch off from everything, loved all the extra touches and the setting of the dome is amazing. To be able to sit in a hot tub and star gaze on a cold February night was brilliant ☺️

    Louise2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Would definitely recommend. Weve just stayed in cold January and so long as the log burner was lit the dome was lovely and warm. Great waking up looking out over the lake. The hot tub takes awhile to heat as expected and stated but once reached heat it was boiling. Plenty of pubs in surrounding areas for a bite to eat. I imagine summer stays are fab with the bbq and fire pit

  • Lovely cosy hideaway in a beautiful, rural location. St cuthbert’s cave is within walking distance and the cottage is also close to stunning coastlines and the cheviots. Little touches like wine and snacks, toiletries, robes and nespresso coffee machine made the trip extra special. We loved the hot tub and wood fire to warm up after a day of walking. Best of all the cottage is dog friendly so our puppy could join in the fun too!

  • Great place and location!

  • Beautifully furnished cottage in a rural setting, close to the Cheviots and cost but far from the reach of our mobile phone networks!!! Highly recommended for those wishing to use as a base to explore this wonderful region.

  • Lovely cottage in a quiet and rural area. The cottage was very clean and came with Instructions on how to use various appliances around the house. The house and it’s facilities were great and came with everything you needed (even washing machine and tumble dryer) along with a few nice touches of a bottle of wine and crisps, etc. Louise was very helpful with replies and came round within a few minutes to help with any issues, as well as giving us a map route for a nearby walk. Had a brilliant sleep every night due to how amazingly comfy the bed was and how silent the surrounding areas were. The WiFi however can be a bit temperamental but it’s a good chance to get away from it all and relax Overall had a great stay and couldn’t recommend it more.

    Sofia2020-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • Second time staying here - we loved it the first time and it was just as good the second time around. Loved the hot tub, and all the little extras (like robes, towels, etc) were lovely. Louise was very helpful with a couple of questions we had, with quick responses. Already working out when we can next go back!!

  • Thanks Jane My friend and I had a lovely few days in your fabulously comfortable cottage. It was immaculately clean and has everything anyone could wish for. It’s situated in a perfect spot, near to many other lovely places. Definitely be coming again thanks Julie and Jan

    Julie2020-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • What a beautiful cottage in a breathtaking setting. We booked this place last minute and can't believe how lucky were to have found this. Jane presented the house beautifully and catered for everything you may need. The log burning fireplace was perfect for our cosy nights in and the surrounding area offers so much to do and see, just a shame our stay was so short. We will definitely look to come back and stay much longer. This is definitely our ideal house!

  • The most amazing stay - perfect place to get away from everything and such a lovely, cosy house. Would definitely come back!

    Rebekah2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • If you've been using AirBnB for awhile then you will really appreciate that this lovely cottage had comfortable beds, real pillows, large fluffy and soft towels and, even more rarely, a set of sharp knives that made cooking in the kitchen so much easier. Add the quiet location, proximity to Holy Island and the Coastal Highway, walks along the grounds of Chillingham Castle and cozy wood-stove fires on wind-swept evenings and it was a great place to stay. Thank you Jane and Amelia.

The Bothy is a delightful 19th century listed barn on an old farm. The room is light and airy with stunning views over the Northumberland countryside, between the Cheviots and the Northumberland coast. There is a large garden for visitors use, and dark skies above us. We are an eco friendly family, and the Bothy comes with a composting toilet in a separate wooden shed, and a spring fed water supply just outside the door. Think of it as cosy camping in a stone tent.
All bedding , towels and toilet paper are provided, as well as logs for the fire and woodburner There are electricity sockets for recharging phones and electric kettles. Well behaved dogs are welcome. There are wash bowls and jugs provided. There are tea and coffee making facilities with a cafetiere and teapot.
The area is ideal for skywatchers and nature lovers, there are wide, open, dark skies and we have red squirrels, barn owls, bats, deer, buzzards and kites close by. There is an excellent gastro pub 2 miles away in the village, and delightful shops in Wooler 3 miles away. We are close to Chillingham, Bamburgh and Alnwick castles, and also to Lindisfarne and the Farne Islands. The Cheviots provide a wealth of walks, and we are just off St Cuthberts Way and The Sandstone Way cycle route, so it's an ideal overnight stop.
  • The barn at Fliss’ is the perfect eco camping getaway. If you are travelling up there through the winter months it can get quite cold but Fliss provided us with loads of blankets and hot water bottles and a lovely fire, as a traveller though, use your brains and make sure you pack your own blankets and thermals etc! The barn is super cosy and very big and it only a short 5 minute drive into Wooler! The views are breathtaking! We loved it, thanks Fliss!!

  • Fliss and Tim were very welcoming and friendly, they gave us clear instructions so the bothy was easy to find. Everything was very clean and they even gave us a kettle full of water and some milk and coffee tea etc, towels and soap were also provided as well as everything to make a fire and they got it set up for us. The toilet was also very clean. It was in a lovely setting- we would love to stay here again

    Emma2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • What a great way to spend a night traveling around the country. The barn was set in an idyllic setting. It was quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed lying in our beds watching the logs burning on the fire. Beds were warm and cozy. All that you needed was all laid out. The bonus was the stunning sunrise over the Cheviot Hills the following morning.

    Frances2019-10-03T00:00:00Z
  • What a gem! After a lovely afternoon exploring Wooler Common and a part of St Cuthbert’s way (literally 10mins away and highly recommended) we arrived at the Bothy following very helpful directions from Fliss. We had a friendly welcome, were shown around and nothing was too much trouble. My children picked delicious apples from the tree and patted the horses over the garden wall (with views to die for!) before exploring the generous gardens and our dog had fun playing with their lovely dog. We were offered hot water bottles and were reassured that if we needed anything just to ask before being happily left to our own devices. A fire was already laid in the Bothy and we made use of the fire pit outside too (sorry for using so many fire lighters!) There were fluffy towels and extra snuggly blanket inside, lovely little touches such as ground coffee and teabags, a stone water jug and basin, handmade soaps and cosy clean bedding. We’re used to Bothys without lights or power so what a treat to have four sockets and plenty of light! If you’re used to camping this is glamping at its finest, if you’re used to luxury hotels then it’ll be a fun back to basics adventure. We can’t wait to return.

  • Excellent. Rural basics nice fire nearby pub

  • We weren't able to make it, so this is a review regarding Fliss as a communicator. She was a perfect host in this respect, very fast to respond to all my queries and emails, and I have no doubt our stay would've been great if our whole family hadn't fallen ill with a flu less than 24 hours before we were due to travel. She had prepared everything we needed and I have no regrets booking here. If things had gone differently, I think we'd have had a great time. These things happen!

    Dorothy2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • What a great find, great alternative to camping. Lovely fireplace so you can make a fire and heat up the room. Great host too, would definitely recommend staying here!

  • The Gardeners cottage is a charming place, located in a little piece of paradise in the Cheviots, with magnificent views all around. You literally walk over a stile at the back of the garden and you are walking in the hills. Mylo the host was impecable from first contact, to directions, to a welcoming hamper and lit fire on arrival, to kindness of his time, making us feel so welcome. Lastly the cottage is so cosy, with wood burner, comfy beds, and fully equipped for self catering... We will be back

  • What a wonderful cottage! Beautiful old building, lovely cosy furnishings, great garden (with a selection of outdoor toys for kids), remote but easily accessible to the A1 by car, and Claire’s communications were fantastic. A perfect place for a half term getaway with the kids. Thank you Claire, we’ll stay again!

    Chrid2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • I stayed in Claire’s lovely cottage with my wife and 5 year old daughter. Great location to discover Northumberland’s attractions. The cottage has some lovely features and the surroundings were beautiful. The host was exceptionally helpful and friendly, even providing toys for our daughter to play with. The bottle of wine and fresh eggs were a nice touch too. Definitely recommend and would love to stay again - thank you.

  • We booked this Airbnb for a family trip to the country side and it was perfect! The location if fantastic, being a 20 minute drive to the Cheviots and Bamburgh, as well as being 10 minutes from Wooler and close to Alnwick. There is a great pub down the road where we had a good dinner. The space is beautiful, spacious and homely - the log burner was particularly great. Beautiful dark skies at night with lots of stars. Cannot fault at all.

  • Myself and three friends had such a lovely stay in Chatton at Claire's place. The cottage was sparkling clean and so cosy and very well equipped (plenty plates/ glasses/ kitchen utensils as well as board games and a sky box). The eggs and bottle of wine left out for us were such a lovely touch and there was a Christmas tree up in the cottage which made it extra special and festive! It is ideal for exploring the Northumberland coast.. we went to Bamburgh, Seahouses and Beadnell- all beautiful. Myself and my friends had a really lovely stay here and we would really recommend it to others.

    Isla2020-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • This beautiful cottage exceeded all of our expectations. We stayed in the run up to and including Christmas Day in order to have a base for visiting nearby family. Located minutes from the A1, it is perfectly situated for exploring the beautiful Northumbrian coastline but also only an hour's drive from Newcastle. Claire and her family were superb hosts - nothing was too much trouble and the thoughtful gifts of wine and local fresh eggs made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. As for the cottage itself, it is amazing. Spacious, comfortable and spotlessly clean with everything you could think of provided. We really couldn't have asked for more. As it was Christmas time, Claire had decorated the cottage with a beautiful Christmas tree, which together with the lovely log fire made for an idyllic few evenings. We would wholeheartedly recommend Claire's cottage to anyone wishing to explore the area - you would struggle to find anywhere nicer with more hospitality. Absolutely superb ! Thank you Claire (and family) x

Bed and breakfast in my house in the lovely Northumberland village of Chatton located between the coastal beauty spots of near-by Bambrugh and the rolling Cheviot hills. Plenty of walks on the doorstep and an ideal base for exploring the coast and the Cheviots. Chatton has a village shop and post office, and a very good pub. 5 miles from Wooler and Belford, an easy 12 mile drive to Alnwick.
Ground floor bedroom, King size bed, with sole use of shower room next door. I do have another room available - twin or super king (zip & link) - to view: https://abnb.me/YTS4s8Xh13 or go to my personal profile and click on "other listings by this host". You can help yourself to a continental breakfast to be taken in the kitchen/dining room
  • Ruth has a lovely new home and we were extremely comfortable. She communicated with us very well and checking in and out was very easy. She gave us a great cup of tea when we arrived and we had some very good chats. She provided a delicious continental style breakfast. We would highly recommend a stay with Ruth and Mousie her jolly and friendly Whippet.

We made the cabin from a used shipping container. It’s off grid with just its own simple 12 volt lighting, and no WiFi. There’s board games, a wood burning stove, huge bed, hot shower & a compost loo. Views of Budle Bay & Bamburgh Castle. Situated 1/5 mile down a private forest track, surrounded by nature. Leave the hustle & bustle behind & come switch off & relax. Lots of great pubs & restaurants nearby. Kick back & relax.
The cabin is entirely bespoke, we even made the bed. There’s an instant hot shower & compost loo and a big deck out front with stunning views. It's a learning curve & we'll change it, refine it etc as per the feedback that comes back whilst keeping our original hopes for the cabin. So please do tell us what you like & what you think could make it better & help us create a wonderful space for people.
The cabin is located 2.5 miles from the village of Belford, and 3.5 from Chatton. It’s 0.5 mile down a private forest track. The only neighbour is me! You can totally relax in nature here, there’s nobody to bother you. There's a range of pubs & restaurants in the area to suit all tastes & budgets, you're encouraged to use them & get craicing with the locals.
  • We had a fantastic stay at the Smoke House cabin, it had everything we needed for a cozy stay despite some crazy weather! The bed was so comfy and the log burner warmed up the space really quickly. Belford is just a couple of miles away, we walked in and had a lovely meal at the Black Swan pub then got a taxi back later on. We will definitely be back!

  • What a great stay! Nathalie was a great host and so so kind! The cabin is incredible, such a fantastic place to get away and enjoy nature! Some lovely local walks, beaches and castles, it really is a wonderful spot, I can’t wait to come back again soon!

  • The perfect escape from a city life. A lovely cosy cabin in a beautiful setting

    Frances2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic off grid space with a gorgeous wood burner in a beautiful area, perfect for quiet evenings reading and playing games away from normal hectic life. Don’t top up the log burner at 9pm unless you want to lie awake sweating!

    Amy2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing place, secluded in the forest, feels like you’re a long way from anyone. Damp and cold weather but the hut soon warmed up! Nathalie went out of her way to be helpful, her instructions were perfect and suggestions for dinner were great. Would love to come back in the summer.

    Emma2019-11-24T00:00:00Z
  • This is a unique and tranquil experience which I would recommend for anyone looking to reconnect with nature

    Matthew2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • I loved my stay here. The drive down the track to the cabin was beautiful. It's such a beautiful, peaceful location and at night I loved looking up through the trees to see so many stars. The woodburner warms up the place really well and there's plenty of wood and kindling to get you going. I had a very relaxing weekend.

  • Prompt and friendly check in. Cosy, clean room with kettle and tea/coffee. We were only there for 1 short night as attending a ghost Hunt at nearby Chillingham Castle. Austin asked if we needed any assistance with dinner reservations or if we would like breakfast but sadly we had to decline. Would definitely stay here again and Wooler is a great base for local attractions.

  • Had a wonderful stay in a very cosy, clean and comfortable room. Check in staff was super friendly and the full English breakfast was superb and sent me on my way ready to walk St Cuthbert’s Way. Loved everything about the place!

  • When we stayed at this place it was officially closed so we can’t comment on the full service experience, however our very clean, comfortable and warm room with a modern en-suite was exactly what we needed for our one-night stop over. Everything worked and Austen helpfully recommended a few pubs in Wooler for us to visit for dinner, and we would definitely go back if in the area. Lovely accommodation!

  • The Cart Shed was much bigger than even the photos looked, very comfortable and warm. Everyone very friendly on the farm. It was well situated to see all that Northumbria has to offer. We even ducked up to Edinburgh for the day!

    Sue2019-10-19T00:00:00Z
  • Great communication by the hosts, being quick to respond, friendly and available should we have needed anything. The property was lovely, much bigger than I imagined. Great amenities, good strong shower with instant hot water and I loved the under floor heating. There were lovely little touches around the property, especially loved the iron artwork around the farm. It is a working farm, but we found it to be fairly peaceful and everyone was friendly and welcoming.

  • Such a lovely home, so cosy & full of character. Softest bedding ever too! We had the best time at Bamburgh beach & enjoyed our walk round Wooler Common. We were planning on going out for tea but really enjoyed staying in together by the fire in the end, lovely when the weather was 50mph wind outside! My boyfriend’s tea addiction was catered to on arrival with tea bags, milk & cookies, a lovely touch! Would highly recommend this home for your next trip! Thank you from Chlo, Ben & Ken the pup!

There is loads of rooms in the house two living rooms as well which is great if everyone can agree on something to watch! :D house is spotless and modern plus the heating is good as well never felt cold inside the house which at this time of year is a huge bonus. Walking distance into town lots of pubs and two restaurants as well! This is the perfect place to go especially for exploring Northumberland as well. Only took about 30mins to get to major places for sightseeing like bamburgh or Alnwick. Had such a great holiday I won’t hesitate to come back to this place. Thanks again Pam

    Richard2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • We had an absolutely wonderful weekend at Caroline’s lovely studio flat. It’s warm, cosy, spotlessly clean, peaceful and really comfortable. Caroline is a perfect host and made us incredibly welcome. There were lots of extra touches such as a bowl of fruit and bars of chocolate. There was plenty of space for both of us, our 12 year old son and our dog. We can’t recommend it highly enough!

    Sarah2019-10-12T00:00:00Z
  • Caroline is a wonderful host. She welcomed my family with open arms! The studio flat is pet-friendly, but you would never know! It is so clean and beautifully put together, clearly well looked after! My family and I were very comfortable. It is more than suitable for young children (my daughter is 16 months old and loved the garden and local walks!) nearby views are beautiful. It was perfect for our 2-night stay and we would happily have stayed longer. Thank you so much!

Close to some great areas for sight seeing - Seahouses for a boat trip across to the Farne Islands, Warkworth Castle, town of Carster, Holy Island and Etal. Can recommend the Pack Horse Inn at Elingham for dinner.

    Philippa2019-08-29T00:00:00Z
  • The Old School Annex is perfectly positioned for many local attractions. Being just off the A1 made getting around very easy. The accommodation is extremely spacious, clean and quiet. We stayed here with our two dogs and there was more than enough room for us all! The memory foam mattress was very comfortable indeed and that mixed with the sea air ensured we have a lot of very good quality sleep which we needed after a very busy few months at work. The kitchen is very well stocked if you want to cook, but with so many wonderful places to eat nearby, we didn't take full advantage! We would highly recommend The Old School Annex to others.

    Kate2019-08-17T00:00:00Z
  • Spacious accommodation

    Melanie2019-07-20T00:00:00Z
  • This flat is very spacious. The proximity to the A1 means it is very easy to get to the tourist attractions. We particularly liked Holy Island and Alnwick castle. The White Swan pub has excellent food and is only across the road. Do get the shopping in before you arrive as the nearest food shops are about 8 miles away. We recommend this accommodation as it is comfortable and convenient for tourists.

The Old Piggery, at the White Cottage, is a rural oasis in the heart of Northumberland. It is a recently refurbished detached dwelling offering a unique opportunity to escape the hurly burly of life. Located in Warenton, a small hamlet, nestled conveniently between the Cheviot Hills to the west and the coast to the east. With uninterrupted views of Holy Island (Lindisfarne) in the distance and only 10 minutes drive from Bamburgh. It provides the luxury and sanctuary for the perfect escape.
The Old Piggery has one large space downstairs... open plan kitchen/diner and lounge with a log burner. There is one double bedroom downstairs with a shower room, and an entrance lobby come utility room. The second bedroom is upstairs with a double bed and a king size bed and a bathroom with a shower over a spa bath. From the bedroom there are views across the fields to Holy Island and the sea. The bifold doors and large windows allow the light to come flooding through making the whole property bright, light and airy.
We feel very privileged to live in this beautiful peaceful place with friendly neighbours - there are 15 homes in the hamlet but no shops or pubs. The village of Belford is 2 miles away and has 3 pubs, a well stocked Co op including a P.O., doctors/ dentist surgery, Pharmacy and a fish and chip shop. We are equidistant between the towns of Alnwick and Berwick approx. 20 minutes drive away. Northumberland and Warenton a personal perspective.. This is by no means a definitive guide. It is purely subjective and based on a lifetime of living in this area. I am devotee of real ale provided the publican knows what they’re doing and of good value home cooked food. I enjoy cooking and am often reluctant to go out and pay large sums of money for something I feel I could have probably done better myself. Hence I don’t eat out a lot. If I get good reports from people then I will share them here. Belford The Black Swan....a local pub. Pretty basic but a couple of well kept real ales. ( Run Hop Run is my regular quaff!) Basic pub grub. A Mecca for carbs. The Salmon...a local pub frequented by local craftspeople. Towering chrome pumps with loud music and flashing lights. Commercial beers and basic pub grub. The Blue Bell...a fashionable watering hole....in Victorian times. Wall of chrome beers with the occasional cracker guest ale. Basic pub food. Sunnyhills Farm Shop...Sounds like a retirement home but persevere. I’ve yet to be disappointed. Excellent food and they have also started doing an evening menu. There is also a ‘farm’ shop selling local produce and overpriced beer and wines. Still, worth a look! Well House Coffee Shop...I believe most of the goods on sale are homemade. The John Dory chippy...apparently the cheapest chip shop in the whole world. Fish and chips still under £5! I find it a little greasy but its great value and good entertainment trying to work out what the half Scottish half Geordie owner is talking about. Chatton The Percy Arms...a little more upmarket. The starters are excellent and the pub has a nice ambiance. Extensive choice of beers but never quite my taste. Why serve 5.5% beers in a country pub? I’ll have a thimble full please, I’m driving. The Village Shop...recently bought and upgraded. Fresh coffee, papers and artisan breads sold. Up and coming me thinks. Lucker The Apple Inn...modern stone built pub. Pub food and commercial beers. The Apple Core Restaurant...one of the better places to eat. Some basic Italian classics and a specials menu. Beau Monde Spa...Worth mentioning if you fancy a little indulgence. You will need to book. 01668212250. Bamburgh Bamburgh is rapidly becoming a tourist hub. Wainwright once sat on Great Gable in the lakes and described what he saw as “hordes of perspiring pedestrians.” This pretty well describes Bamburgh today. The great thing is that the beach is so vast that even on a busy day it seems empty! The Castle Inn...pub grub and commercial ales. The Lord Crewe Hotel...pub grub and commercial ales. Recently started serving Anarchy ales. Well worth a try... The Potted Lobster...restaurant. If I do venture out then this would be one of my go to places. Specialises in fish but does offer other options. The chowder is a must! Service not always brilliant. You’ll need to book. The Mizzen Head...restaurant. Nicely arranged food. Popular although I’m never sure why. Seahouses If you want good fish and chips then this is the place to go. There are several fish and chip restaurants so take your pick. Seahouses has a good campsite quite close and several caravan parks and is more of a traditional seaside resort. There are even a few Kiss me quick hat shops selling rock. It has two good Indian Restaurants both of whom do carry outs and an up and coming Italian. There are several other more traditional restaurants. My pub preference would be The Olde Ship Inn. It usually serves Tempest beers from Kelso. (My favourite). If you can get it try Pale Armadillo. In Seahouses there is also an indoor soft play area for children of all ages. No visit to Seahouses is complete without making a booking for a boat trip to The Farne islands . This is a group of islands which is a haven for wild life managed by the National Trust. Visitors can expect to see, depending on the season ,Grey seals (one of the largest grey seal colonies in the Uk) And a wide variety of Sea birds including puffins, guillemots, razor bills, fulmars, ganets, cormorants and many others. It is not unusual to see dolphins and on rare occasions orcas. The island of Inner Farne was also the home of St Cuthbert, one of the first conservationists and Long Stone Island sites the lighthouse from where Grace Darling carried out her heroic rescue of some of the crew of the Forfarshire (museum dedicated to her in Bamburgh). Warenford The White Swan. This a friendly little pub and quite close. The beers are clean although generally commercial and the restaurant is very popular with locals. Carnaby’s. This is a quite recent ‘modern’ cafe offering Ottolenghi type salads and ingredients most people north of the Tyne have never heard of. The food is generally very good and there is an attached shop selling localish products. Worth a look. Lowick The Black Bull...this pub has recently been modernised and incorporates a cafe, restaurant and pub. The food is good, although I found the portions a little small. Mainly craft beers which are clean and tidy. Worth a look but you’ll probably have to book. Wooler I like Wooler. I can’t really tell you why but I just do! There are several pubs, none of which are particularly noteworthy and a restaurant once reviewed favourably by AA Gill. It’s traded on that review for years! Cafe No 1 does tapas and there is a good chippy, a Chinese carry out and two great butchers. It has a deli, a post office and several other shops including a chemist. Of the several cafe’s the best in my view is The Milk Bar. All the produce is homemade and they have a wonderful selection of Doddington ice creams. I can often be found here hidden behind a paper! Alnwick Like Bamburgh, Alnwick is becoming increasingly popular and in particular with Chinese tourists hunting in packs for the allusive Harry Potter. It’s pretty one way traffic from the main car parks to the castle and gardens (well worth a visit I hasten to add) but head in the opposite direction and Alnwick is a very friendly and interesting place. Again there are numerous pubs, cafes and restaurants which is where Trip Advisor comes in useful. In my constant search for Pale Armadillo by Tempest breweries in Kelso the most likely place is The Tanners. Cafe Tirreno is my go to for consistent and reasonably priced food. You can’t book and you may well have to wait. The cafe in Barter Books is also excellent. There are many others in fact, too many to mention. Berwick Like Alnwick, Berwick has many pubs restaurants and cafes and also like Alnwick you pay your money you take a chance. I think Berwick is definitely on the up. It has two Indian restaurants, both of which I’d recommend. Whilst the high street remains kidnapped by chains Lower Bridge Street is definitely gaining ‘the vibe’. The Curfew is a micro pub which I’d thoroughly recommend and just across the road is The Three Barrels. Both are top notch. Also on Bridge Street are several cafes and Bistros as well as art galleries and interesting shops. Look also for Northern Edge Coffee. It’s a product roasted in Berwick and worth buying if you’re ‘into’ coffee. Make sure you walk around the walls!! Millfield The Red Lion...Apparently Tempest beers have arrived. Also does good standard bar food and a carvery on a Sunday. Ford The Old Dairy...This is actually an antiques emporium with a cafe in the middle. Its right opposite Ford Castle and the cafe serves only homemade produce. Quite quirky with a rather eccentric owner! I have really only just touched the surface here and your experience may be different to mine. If you do discover some hidden gem then please share it! Beaches There have been several occasions in my life when I have strolled across a Northumberland beach, head bent against the wind and the spin drift, completely alone. On such occasions I do usually ask myself where in the UK could I do this with the possible exception of northern Scotland. I was thrilled to see the Lonely Planet including The Northumberland coastline as one of the three must visit places in England. I’ll list the beaches from north to south. Spittal Beach...just through Tweedmouth. Scremerston...just south of Berwick. Cocklawburn beach but signposted Pot a doodle. (Don’t ask me why!) Budle Bay...quite hard to get to but well worth it. Wild, remote. Bamburgh Beach... Vast! The iconic castle watches over you. You can walk right along to Seahouses if you feel fit enough. If you’re really lucky you wont see anyone! Beadnell Beach...vast! Embleton Beach...vast! Boulmer Beach...a little more cosy. Alnmouth beach... stunning. Park by the beach and wander into the village to one of several pubs and cafes. (Scotts is my favourite cafe). Sugar Sands...quite difficult to find but a gem. Druridge Bay...a very popular beach with locals
  • A quiet location and lively home. We had winter weekend stay and enjoyed some short local walks and a lazy fireside afternoon. Everything was spotless and it’s really well set-up for guests. Susan left fresh eggs for us and we loved seeing the chickens and sheep.

  • Just returned from a wonderful New Years break at the Old Piggery, Warenton. This is a fabulous place to stay in a beautiful area. Great accommodation, very well equipped with lots of thoughtful touches. The setting is gorgeous- scenery old around with sea views. Very quiet but just a short drive to places like Bamburgh and Holy Island. Sue and Phil were great hosts. Brilliant place for families- even pet sheep and chickens. We would love to return! Thanks Sue and Phil.

  • This is truly a gem of a place. For a last minute find, it was fantastic and so pleased that I decided to take my kids and parents away at the last minute! The Old Piggery is a lovely building, stylishly decorated, super clean and everything you need for a comfortable stay! The small touches such as fresh flowers and eggs just made it feel that little bit more personal and homely for us. Phil and Sue are genuinely two of the nicest human beings I have ever had the pleasure of meeting and chatting to them whilst helping to feed their lovely sheep, just added to the enjoyment of our stay! I can’t recommend this place enough. A beautiful property in a beautiful part of the UK owned by a truly lovely couple.

  • Perfect family sized, beautifully decorated accomodation. Great location, quiet but close to the beautiful beaches and country pubs. Stunning views. Spotlessly clean and loads of extra touches which made us feel so welcome and cosy. Log burner, flowers and fruit, chocolates and all the bits n bobs for cooking. We were so impressed with the accomodation and hospitality. Phil and Sue have thought of everything and we wanted for nothing!

    Julie2019-10-21T00:00:00Z
  • We returned from sue and Phil ‘s old piggery feeling relaxed and refreshed . It was home from home . Exceptionally clean and welcoming . Sue and Phil were the most friendly helpful hosts we could have wish for . Nothing was to much trouble and they were always ready to help out . Fresh eggs and a full larder waited for us with liquid refreshment too . This really is a must for any one wanting to unwind and enjoy the beautiful scenery and around them 👌

    Julie2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • The Piggery was truly a fantastic place to stay; from the supplies in the kitchen to the cleanliness of all spaces as well as the amazing views, we couldn’t have asked for anything more. My whole family (1yr up to grandparents) found the place to be perfect. Sue and Phil were so friendly and nothing was too much, even when we ended up leaving a bag behind! We would 100% recommend this to other visitors and our own friends. Thank you for everything, we have come home fully relaxed from a super trip!

Walker Walls is a large residential property set in a beautiful part of Northumberland, not far from the town of Wooler. With stunning views out over fields in a private and comfortable setting, it is the perfect retreat for families and groups looking to relax and enjoy the scenery of Northumberland. This building has been used in the past for community groups and lends itself to groups looking for modest comfort. Strictly no stag or hen parties. We request respectful use of facilities.
With large communal rooms downstairs including large kitchen and open dining/sitting areas, this is a great property for groups. There is a large fireplace and an abundance of outside space including a field to the side of the property, making it ideal for group activities. Upstairs there are modest bedrooms with bunk beds and single beds in shared dorms throughout. 3 bathrooms with an additional separate shower and WC. Whilst not luxurious, we provide a comfortable and clean living space for people of all ages to enjoy and share. PLEASE NOTE: Although there is a small cleaning fee, we do request the property is left in a tidy condition. This enables us to keep the costs low for all groups. If this is an issue, please mention it to us when making an enquiry/booking.
Walker Walls sits in its own setting with an outlook over the fields of Cheviot. Wooler, a fantastic Northumberland town with pubs, restaurants and several shops, is just a 30 minutes away on foot or 5 minutes by car (local taxi service available). This location provides the ideal mix of countryside seclusion and accessible amenities. The surrounding landscape is simply stunning.
  • A lovely property for a large group with basic accommodation but excellent value for money! Peaceful location with nice views and only 5 minutes by car to Wooler. Well equipped kitchen with plenty of utensils for everybody. Fire was enjoyed by all. Would recommend!

  • We booked this last minute as a group of three families with children aged 1-8 and it was perfect- great fun!

  • Great weekend with family at Walkerwalls. In a lovely setting, very peaceful. Great facilities with a very well equipped modern kitchen and living space. Bedrooms are basic but did the job for a large group of people. Plenty of toilets and shower facilities. Outdoor space was great. Host was very receptive to queries Nd check in was simple! Thanks for being a great host.

  • Walker Walls provided the perfect setting for our family Christmas. As a large family we usually have to spend it separately due to space. Walker Walls allowed the entire family of 20 to spend the holiday together for a very reasonable price. We arrived on the morning of Christmas eve and stayed through to boxing day morning. The entire family had the perfect Christmas. We enjoyed family games by the log burner fire place and Christmas dinner cooked in the fully equipped kitchen. The large dining room table had more then enough room to seat us all during dinner. After dinner the kids enjoyed riding their new bikes in the surrounding scenery which was idyllic. The dorm style bedrooms where simple but pleasant and offered more then enough room to accommodate our large group. Would definitely stay here and again and recommend to others.

    Brooke2018-12-26T00:00:00Z
  • We had a really great stay at Walker Walls. The communal areas are very comfortable and very high quality with a large table and comfy sofas. We loved that we could have a fire! The kitchen is also very well equipped, large and modern. I would recommend this property very highly!

    Ella2018-12-02T00:00:00Z
  • This place is very close to great walks in Northumberland National Park. You won't find another place that can sleep this many for this price, and everything was clean, organised and as advertised. Highly recommended.

    Kyle2018-10-07T00:00:00Z
  • We enjoyed our stay at Walker Walls very much. The place has a great layout and there was plenty space for all 21 of us. There is a large garden with a fire pit, where we spent our evenings (between rain showers) and I imagine in the winter the living room is very cosy with it's open fire. Great location, Wooler has all the necessary amenities and is only 5 mins drive away. The North East coat is only a 20/30 min drive too - we spent our Saturday in Bamburgh, a great little town and we had a good pub lunch at the Castle Inn - which had a big enough beer garden to accommodate all 21 of us at short notice ( good job it was sunny). Would definitely recommend the barn to other groups and we hope to return soon! Many thanks to Martin.

It is the perfect location for a quiet and relaxing getaway for couples, friends or a small family. Alternatively it is the perfect base for a more active sightseeing, walking, fishing or shooting trip. Our guests have unrestricted private access (on foot only in order to protect the red squirrels) to the entire 34-acre gardens of Fowberry Tower consisting of open parkland with specimen trees, private orchards, woodland, and several miles of access along the banks of the river Till (Fowberry Tower side). These grounds are not otherwise open to the public so you can enjoy them in peace and quiet. Uniquely, our guests can use our fishing rights for two rods on the river Till to fish for sea trout and Salmon in season. We can provide a Ghillie on request for a separate fee. In addition there are numerous horse riding stables in the vicinity (see Guidebook) some of the best pheasant and grouse shooting in the country and a professionally managed clay shoot less than two miles from the cottage for the more adventurous types (see Guidebook). Alnwick Castle (of Harry Potter filming fame) is 25 minutes drive away (details in the Guidebook); Bamburgh Beach is 20 minutes away by car. This beach is stunning (as is the castle that dominates the skyline). Numerous places to eat and drink (referred to in the Guidebook); Embleton, Seahouses and Low Newton are arguably even more spectacular beaches with more great pubs and restaurants (see Guidebook); The most haunted castle in Britain (Chillingham) is five minutes drive away and offers regularly scheduled ghost tours (which we highly recommend - details in the Guidebook); Sampling the local produce is easy. There are several shops in nearby Wooler (3 miles away) selling lovely locally made food; If you really want to relax, order a freshly cooked meal to be delivered direct to your door by some enterprising local ladies (this food is seriously good). Details in the Guidebook; The closest pub is in Chatton (1 mile away walking over the countryside using public rights of way or 2 miles driving). Welcoming, full of locals and very friendly (details in Guidebook); There are countryside walks along public rights of way you can access directly from Fowberry Tower. Alternatively use Wooler as your base for treks to venture further afield (see Guidebook); Holy Island is only 25 minutes away. People travel to Northumberland for this experience alone; and Depending on the time of year, there are Dolphin and Puffin tours within 30 minutes drive also. Within the garden of the Cottage and the grounds of Fowberry Tower, we can almost guarantee you will come face to face with red squirrels, wild deer, buzzards, badgers and foxes. If you're lucky you'll also see the resident nesting owls. Please observe them respectfully from a distance and be sure to bring your camera with you. If you want a lazy, cosy relaxing stay, that's precisely what you can have. If you want adventure and sight-seeing, it's all on your doorstep. Regardless of whether you're relaxing or exploring, we want to make your stay perfect so we have the pleasure of welcoming you back time after time. No detail will be overlooked. If there is anything we can do to make your stay more comfortable, please do not hesitate to let us know! We very much look forward to meeting you.
  • Lovely cosy cottage in a great location; lovely little garden of its own, but we also loved having exclusive access to the grounds of (the currently unused) Fowberry Tower - plenty of space to explore, for our boys (13 and 11) to play football and run around. It was only a short drive to Bamburgh Beach and Alnwick so we had some lovely days out. There was a slight blip on arrival as the cleaners hadn't been after the previous guests, but the host's local contacts Richard and Pam very kindly came to the rescue and quickly cleaned up whilst we popped to the beach, so it was perfect for us on our return a couple of hours later. They then showed us around the grounds of Fowberry Tower and were extremely friendly, welcoming and informative. We loved the cottage and would happily return in the future.

    Rosie2019-07-26T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely cottage, very cosy for a cold late spring week! Great location, with the grounds of Fowberry Tower to explore as well as the coast only 25 minutes away. Also, Cragside was well worth a visit with two young children, although allow plenty of time as the grounds are huge! Also saw puffins, seals, dolphins and sea birds galore on a trip to the Farne Islands. Having Richard show us around the grounds and explain local attractions was a big plus. Overall, a lovely quiet place to base ourselves but still be accessible to the area's attractions.

    Andrew2019-05-31T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage is a lot bigger than it appears in the photos. It is incredibly cosy and warm with the log burner going and the heating on. The beds were incredibly comfortable and we slept soundly each night. There is a good size garden and of course you have the whole estate to explore as well. Richard was great at coming over to show us around and where we could pick up some more wood for the log burner. The cottage is really well positioned to explore northern Northumberland. There are some great walks not far from the cottage - Pathfinder walk books are the best if you are keen on walking. College Valley is stunning and worth seeking out and we enjoyed seeing all the castles along the coast, as well as Cragside. Holy Island aka Lindisfarne is a must (check tide times) - great walks, scenery, Pilgrims Rest coffee shop - excellent, and the Priory. The Castle was a disappointing (empty rooms) so give that a miss. The Potted Lobster in Bamburgh and The Jolly Fisherman at Craster are good for food. The local Percy Arms also served us well for a couple of meals. Would love to return and this cottage is the perfect bolt hole to explore the region.

    Torie2019-04-18T00:00:00Z
  • A wonderful cottage in a beautiful setting. We loved every minute of our stay. The wood burner was so cosy on a cold winter’s night.

    Gary2019-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • Echo much of previous comments. We had a lovely, peaceful start to the new year with our friends and our dog. Great walks nearby and the grounds are fab and full of all the wildlife. Our dog was spoilt rotten and had an absolute ball, he is shattered from all the investigating and this is a hard thing to do with a spaniel! Thanks to Richard for walking us around and also for the prosecco, lovely touch.

    Sarah2019-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely cottage, very comfortable in beautiful country side. We only spent 3 nights - would have loved to have been able to stay longer. Highly recommended.

    Charlotte2018-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • We had an absolutely wonderful stay, 6 nights with our happy dogs in this magical place with such a warm and personal welcome, which makes all the difference. We particulary appreciated the Welcome pack, flowers, lots of local knowledge and tips - invaluable. A beautiful spot in a perfect location with perfect hosts - see you in 2019!

    Virginia2018-09-12T00:00:00Z
  • A fantastic cottage, and a superb welcome from Richard on arrival. Was exactly what we needed for a base to explore Northumberland, the extra special access to the grounds of Fowberry Tower gives the cottage that little something extra. Well worth a visit.

  • What an amazing place! Outstanding! As soon as you walked in you felt at home, the layout and style is warming and delightful. Couldn’t ask for nicer hosts. Gave us the ins and outs of the northeast and of the cottage. They were friendly, polite and quick at answering back to any question we had :) would 100% recommend to anyone

  • Our stay at Silver Fox Barn was extremely enjoyable and we felt immediately at home on arrival. The cottage is very well stocked and has everything you could possibly imagine you might need. Special mention needed of the extremely comfortable beds! Instructions sent ahead of our stay were prompt and comprehensive ensuring we had no issue in finding and then entering the property. We also made use of the information book set up by the hosts by following the recommendations for daily activities (with maps) and food - all excellent. If I was to stay in the vicinity again I wouldn’t hesitate in returning.

  • On our 5th visit to the barn it as usual did not disappoint! We absolutely love this place and it really does feel like a home from home for us now! This time was our first visit with two young children (our second arrived earlier last year) so we really needed and appreciated the familiarity of the barn and all its welcoming features and amenities. Jonathan and Fran are always so so helpful and kind with information before we visit, and any changes or improvements they’ve made. Our son really enjoyed the amazing collection of kid’s DVD’s and also all the space to play both inside and outside. The kitchen is so well equipped and it’s really great to have such a selection of cooking utensils and pans etc - you could cook virtually any meal which is not normally possible when staying away! The barn is always so clean and the lovely big beds are amazing! The location is great (we have family in Berwick) but our son loves the beach at Bamburgh and this time we also went to a couple of farms and adventure parks, plus Edinburgh is only a short trip up the A1 for a really fab day out! The barn is in beautiful surroundings and lots of lovely wildlife to watch (we love watching the birds on all the feeders!) Silver Fox Barn will not disappoint, thank you Jonathan and Fran for letting us enjoy it over and over again 😊

  • Silver Fox Barn is a gem of a find. We were so comfortable there we really didn’t want to leave. Really well equipped, cosy and tastefully decorated rooms. The location is peaceful but close to the coast where there’s more hustle and bustle. We got loads of tips from Jonathan and Fran and their communication was first class. We will definitely return.

  • Wow, wow and wow!! Amazing barn and amazing location. Everything has been thought of by Jonathan and Fran, I cannot recommend the barn more highly. We will definitely be returning.

  • Just returned from a lovely stay in Northumberland. Jonathan and Fran’s house is amazing. The house is very well presented and equipped. Location is perfect for exploring Bamburgh, Holy island, Alnwick etc. We would definitely go back and stay.

  • Our stay at Silver Fox barn was a wonderful week. The property is modern and stylish yet cosy with thoughtful touches. It is within a Steading of a number of properties but all are tastefully developed. Lovely too that my friends 2 dogs were warmly hosted. Kitchen is well facilitated and beds are super comfy with plenty hot water. My only comments are that for 6 adults to want to sit together in the bigger lounge, this is not so easily achieved. Also we found the wifi does struggle for speed so do not expect easy internet access if it is important to you. Thankfully for us we could work with it. Most popular areas to visit in Northumberland are generally within 20-40 minutes drive away such as Alnwick, Lindisfarne, Bamburgh and Berwick.

The charming flat above the old garage is simple but spacious and offers incredible views over the gardens and the surrounding area. This is an ideal place for those looking to escape the trappings of modern life and spend time being close to nature.

  • Spent a night here while passing through and I can honestly say I wish we had more time and more days to explore this area. Next time. I would absolutely stay here again. I found all the staff to be accommodating and very friendly. William was a very attentive host and made sure we had everything we needed. I loved the decor here. The tartan carpets and all the willow boughs made it feel like a charming hunting lodge. We stayed in room 3 and it was wonderful. The bed was very comfortable and the bathtub was just fantastic. Didn’t eat here for dinner but did really enjoy just sitting and having a pint in the evening. Breakfast was delicious. I will be back to do some of the walks in the area and would for sure stay here again. Also Sam the dog takes his welcoming job very seriously. Rub his belly, he will appreciate it.

Staying at Hetton Hall Holidays gives the opportunity to enjoy lazy days, looking out over fantastic views taking in the wildlife; red squirrels, deer, hares, partridge and pheasants are regular visitors to our gardens and camp site. The location and natural beauty demands an outdoor chair and BBQ with your favourite tipple to watch the blazing sunsets. We are on the path of St Cuthbert’s Walk, regularly enjoyed by visitors to St Cuthbert’s Cave which can be seen from the grounds.

  • The description and photo's do not do this property justice, it's a wonderful location and the woodland (we saw both deer and foxes wandering the paths from the house) and views are stunning. I could not recommend staying at the tower highly enough, and it far surpassed out expectations in every way. My family and myself adored out time at the tower and if you have any doubts at all, forget them as you will not regret it.
