  • If you want to experience rural Portugal, this is the place to stay! A lovely house in a small town with all the amenities you need. We were 2 couples (60+) sharing. Th kitchen is quite large and has everything you need although we opted to barbeque outside. The barbeque area was super! Matt invited us to harvest tomatoes, butternut, figs, strawberries, etc from his garden. Matt is a happy, lively host and a joy to chat to. He went to a lot of trouble to find us because we were lost! He joined us for a beer and a chat at the barbeque and had so much info to share. He owns a company called 'Rock and River' and you can book canoe and kayak tours with him. He also does rock climbing expeditions. We would have liked to stay another day!

  • This has to be up their as one of the best AirBnB places that we have ever stayed. Very clean and a good size with three bedrooms and two bathrooms it was more than enough for the two of us. The kitchen had everything we needed for cooking including locally pressed olive oil, dried herbs, ground coffee, English tea, and more. Matt and Celia are very welcoming and happy to help out with local advice and always just a text away. Highly recommended.

    Pete2017-01-28T00:00:00Z
  • well equipped and comfortable accommodation. Matt was very friendly and responded quickly to our questions and requests. This is a very quiet and relaxing. We took full advantage of the patios.

  • Great little house with garden and orchard, very fun for children. Must do some route by the river in canoe or kayak with the company of Matt.

    Cristina2017-08-29T00:00:00Z
  • Matt's house is great, a week of contact with nature, with canoeing at Mondego tb organized by Matt who is a spectacular human being, a great defender of the Portuguese and of our culture. Congratulations!

  • We're very happy to have been Matt's first Airbnb guests. We had a lovely time relaxing at his gorgeous quinta. The grounds are beautiful with many spaces to relax in and the house is very cool. Matt is a wonderful host, very friendly and knowledgeable about the local area and people and made us feel like we'd made a new friend. Only downside is that we were only booked for one night but we'll be back! Highly recommended!

My place is in the countryside close to a rural farm. You’ll love my place because of the nature surroundings and its quietude. My place is good for families with kids, big groups and has a big garden for pets. It's located only 30-min for the main city of Viseu and 60-min from Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain in Portugal. It's located close to Póvoa Dão (a recovered ghost village) and a pre-historic route with millenar dolmens. There's plenty of space both within and outside.
  • Staying at Mario's grandmother's house was a really pleasant, personal and unique experience. We were a big group of friends visiting over the weekend for a wedding. The house is nicely situated in a lovely village where we found everything we needed during our stay. Although we never met him in person, Mario was a super nice host, sending us useful information in advance. His family lives close to the house. They were extremely friendly, warmly welcomed us and were available for our every question. The house itself is old and breathes history... no wifi, no TV but a lot of atmosphere. We also enjoyed the quiet surroundings and the huge garden. As correctly described, there is no heating, so pack a warm pyjama if you tend to feel cold.

  • The people who welcomed me were simply fantastic. The location was exactly what we were expecting, near the site we wanted and as quiet. The house had the necessary conditions for a few days or an extended weekend and nearby there are several amenities such as restaurants and cafes. Overall it was a great experience to repeat. Thank you

  • We stayed here for three days and the experience was wonderful. Mário was very available while we were getting there and made lots of really good recommendations that we wouldn't have known of. His grandmother came to greet us and show us the house, left some fruits and water for us and offered us some homemade wine. She was really sweet and helpful and helped us find a place to eat. The house is old but beautiful and the town very pretty and quiet. We really loved our stay there and would totally recommend it to anyone traveling to this area!

Ideal house for children and family, small but very cozy in the center of a small town in the north of Portugal. Autonomous house inserted in the space of a large biological farm with space to welcome family, friends and visitors from all over the world. In this farm there are more independent houses but all share the common areas like garden and swimming pool. All the space has been rebuilt and decorated by the owners using everything from vintage furniture to handicrafts decorations, all thought, brought or made by the owners and friends of the farm so as to provide a comfortable space for a house that is divided between the guests and the family. Canas de Senhorim is a well connected village in what concerns to public transport being fornida of direct careers of bus and train of the city of Oporto, Lisbon and others. In response to all the needs of its citizens, Canas de Senhorim offers besides all the essential services (post office, cafes, shops, restaurants, supermarket, market etc) the advantage of being only half an hour away from the city of Viseu, Where you can find a more varied number of attractions. Surrounded by beautiful landscapes, fields and woods you will find that there is much to discover if you want to explore the typical landscape and nature of Beira Alta. For a more restful stay our farmhouse also offers a wide and unoccupied space where you can spend your days between the pool or horses or reading in the shade of the highest trees in the village. A small oasis of calm and fraternity where the individual space is as well preserved as the respect for nature and for all people. Coordially The Casas do Visconde
  • Joana had organized everything for our arrival goes smoothly. The small house is warm, we feel it is customized and decorated. We felt at home here and integrated into the friendly neighborhood. Canas de Senhorim is a picturesque village not exceptional either. It was nice to go take a dip in the pool after returning from our visits to the region and Serra Estrela.

    Danielle2016-07-31T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed two nights, and found the house very comfortable. The location is central and extremely convenient. Joana's grandmother met us on our arrival and provided many helpful suggestions. The bed is very comfortable and everything was spotlessly clean. Like also to give a big thank's to Joana, about the Check In date change. Love the place, the house, I recommend it to everybody.

    Pedro2015-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • We loved staying at Joana's house. It is a space that made us feel very comfortable, very cozy and comfortable, the only drawback we found was the brightness in the morning. The environment, the animals, the pool and the whole surrounding area is extraordinary. The house is well located in the historic center of Canas de Senhorim which invites to pleasant walks through the alleys, 'quelhas' and old house. The people who welcomed us were very friendly. Highly recommend and would return!

    Rui2017-07-23T00:00:00Z
  • Our booking one day in advance was no problem and joana was a big help:) Her grandmother welcomed us and showed us around. They were all really caring and they are just one big lovely family. Their farm is very sweet with a lot of fruits to eat just from the trees and a clean pool. It's just the perfect spot to relax with the whole family.

    Katrin2015-07-03T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic. Incredible place, in a wonderful area. Joana's family are amazingly interesting, creative, welcoming people, and they made a great stay something special. Our four year old loved the swimming pool and we all had a great time at the local river beaches.

    Mick2014-08-23T00:00:00Z
  • The stay is a nice place: the reception is warm and warm, the bedroom is good, kitchen can be cleaned, garden is great, lots of relaxation. Thanks

    Ineke2017-08-16T00:00:00Z
  • Our host Joana was not there but her Mother gave us a nice welcome. The house had a musky damp smell which was too unpleasant to stay in.We left the accommodation after one night. Wi-fi had been advertised on the site but after being given about 6 passwords from Joana's Mother to try we still could not connect to it. The house is owned by Joana ,the farm, gardens and pool are owned by her Mother. She allows Joana's guests to use the site and amenities. She runs workshops and provides accommodation for the participants and their families on site so its a shared space. That's OK if you are aware of this when booking but its not clear from Joana's Airbnb page. Entrance to the gardens and pool was through an exhibition area and was not up to standard.Overall we had a very disappointing experience and would not recommend it.

  • We had a good stay in the Pantanha hotel because of the personal attention of Isabel and the rest of the staff of the hotel. We had some issues with the room, but they were quickly attended. The kitchen is quite limited if you are thinking of cooking during your stay. The hotel is well located in the Dao wine region with good access to major cities such as Porto, Viseu, Fatima, Aveiro,.... all within less than 2 hours, and also to the Serra Da Estrela with good opportunities for hiking.

The Dó Póvoa with the space that surrounds it has an area of about 120 hectares. Today it is a rare jewel, the result of a reconstruction work done with the care that gives rise to a very positive result, and it may therefore be said that here the gift can be lived in the shadow of the past, that is, the Two steps away from the races of our century is the tranquility, the quiet and the simple life of centuries ago.
  • The recovered village of Póvoa Dão is a beautiful place with incredible views. This house is in this village and mixes the old with the modern, a combination very well achieved. The decor / space is very cozy and Mr. João gave us directions in a simple way so that we had no difficulty. Despite being a hamlet in a secluded area, it has security that makes several rounds daily to ensure the safety of visitors. We conclude that it is a perfect choice for those who want to escape the confusion of the city, or simply a place to relax in the middle of a trip. There's a lovely kitten! Loved it!

    Pedro2017-08-31T00:00:00Z
  • Small medieval village perfectly renovated. We spent only one day / night and saw no one but a very nice little black and white cat that was waiting for you to share your picnic. If you like total calm it's perfect.

  • Place of an awesome calm. hamlet in the middle of the forest; the stone houses are superb and the house very clean and well equipped. Alone in the world except a black and white cat that kept us company by purring all the time we were there; a bowl of milk for reward

  • The accommodation is suitable for all those who want peace and relaxation. It was very beautiful. In the house everything is available so for daily needs. • After 5 hot frenetic days in Lisbon this was a wonderful contrast. Eclectic accommodation in granite buildings meant for cool peaceful restful sleep. We had provisions left to us by Lira and daily visits by her very friendly cats and dogs. The site is fabulous with the pool, large grounds, games room all favourites to while away a day...or 5! Oh and the local restaurant - 2 mins walk away does the best salad, pork, rice and chips we have ever tasted.

  • Lira was a very good hostess. Very helpful but modest. The property looked as described, very quiet, clean with a pool. During the preparation of the trip we were able to ask any question at any time, and soon afterwards we had answer from her. Canas de Senhorim is however quite remote if you were looking to explore Portugal. But if you instead keep the peace and want to pull yourself with a book to enjoy the peace ideal.

This Chalet is located in Beijós, at Sitio da Fraga. The place is surrounded by nature and is crossed by a small river. The pool offers a relaxing atmosphere where the dominant sounds are the chirping of birds and the sound of the small river.
The river gave its name and offered to the land the ideal conditions for the production of one of the best Portuguese mature wines. The magic of the nature and some prehistoric heritage, makes the Dão Wine Demarcated Region one of the most desirable to explore and discover in Portugal. This Region, which is still unknown for many of us, has an unparalleled richness, with several interesting things to do. From lovers of food and wine, to all lovers of history, culture and nature, everyone will find a reason to fall in love for this region. Bounded by “Ribeira do Pisão”, our space is located in the small village of Beijós, where Angelina de Sousa Mendes (wife of Aristides de Sousa Mendes, the Portuguese Consul in Bordeaux, who saved thousands of lives from the holocaust) was born and married. Beijós is a small village, in the municipality of Carregal do Sal, Viseu district, in the heart of the Dão Wine Demarcated Region, which is just 20 km away from the District Capital (Viseu), 140 km from Oporto and 270 km from Lisbon. Within 5 Km you can find Cabanas de Viriato, where you can see the “Casa do Passal” - the main house of the Consul Aristides de Sousa Mendes. Our space is surrounded by nature, crossed by a small river with a waterfall and a century watermill, which still works every day.

A beautiful house, in the middle of a small little village, surrounded by an amazing landscape; we were welcomed with cheese, toasts, wine, jam, ..., all homemade and wonderful; a swimming pool with an amazing view, and the kindest family in the world; a barbecue on Saturday. • A quiet house, in a place a bit wild and out of time. The house is beautiful and tastefully furnished, the facilities offered outside are as well (swimming pool, covered terrace, relaxation area under the grapes, terraces). The reception by the hosts is extraordinary. We spent 2 wonderful days at our home on our trip from Lisbon to Porto.

  • Any words to describe our stay at Casa do Calhau are few, since it is impossible to convey in words what we feel during it! What a fantastic space! Beautiful! The house is beautiful, the decor wonderful and the owners phenomenal !! There are no words to describe such sympathy, availability and welcome! Some of the best hosts that can exist. A wonderful family! We had a welcome table filled with delicacies that we did not count, which left us delighted. Organic fruit, chorizo, jams, wines ... a wonderful bread! Exquisite cleaning and storage !! In the house of pebble we almost forgot that there is a "world" beyond that place. The silence and peace that reign, carry our batteries completely! What a depression to pack to get away !! :) We are already looking forward to the next opportunity to go to the house of the pebble and be with the Belchior family again !!! :) We can state, in all sincerity, that it was the most perfect places and turns where we have been to this day! Love it !!!

  • The photos don't do the house or pool justice, this place is absolutely amazing and beautiful. It felt like home. Belchior and his family are so welcoming, and always on hand to help out or give you advice. Their generosity and kindness was overwhelming. This house is perfect for any family or group of friends wanting a relaxed and secluded holiday. Me and my friends had such an amazing holiday sitting by the pool, driving around the local area and soaking up the sun. We will definitely be coming back again !

  • We arrived quite late at night to this amazing house and were greeted very warmly by Belchior, Alcina and Ana. They had laid out a beautiful spread of home grown fresh foods and then cooked some fish for us while we settled in. It was a great start to a really wonderful stay in this special house! The house itself is simply outstanding. It is fully equipped with everything you could possibly ever need or want. It was spotlessly clean and offered every convenience-dishwasher, washing machine etc. The outdoor kitchen and barbecue facilities offered a beautiful restful area to eat and the hammock and suspension seats were very welcome in the courtyard. The mill was a fascinating place to visit and it was great to be there to witness the first time it worked in over 200 years and to see the culmination of years of hard work and dedication pay off. The highlight of the property for our children was definitely the pool. Again, it was pristine and offered beautiful views over the surrounding valley. The sun loungers and sun shades were great for relaxing and watching the sun set into the hills. While there one of our family members got sick and Alcina and Ana accompanied her to the local private hospital to translate the conversation. We also had an issue with the hire car which they helpfully phoned up to sort out for us in Portuguese. They really were like a second family and treated us with such kindness and hospitality. We can't say enough good things about this family and their beautiful house. The biggest compliment we can pay is to say that we can't wait to go back!

    Ken2017-08-10T00:00:00Z
  • unforgetable experience !!! The place is beautiful and fantastic home, fully equipped, modern and rustic at the same time, the dream house! But above all, Ana, Belchior and wife are the most gracious and attentive hosts that anyone could dream of. They made our stay an unforgettable moment we arrived on the night of New Year's Eve and they had prepared a beautiful table for us, the house was all decorated, had goodies pras my daughters and to our complete surprise, delicious smoothies and a variety of desserts! We were not sure how to thank them, they are simply amazing !!!!

  • The apartment was stunningly modern and beautiful and clean. Our host Rui was lovely and so helpful and generous of his time, providing us with lots of local knowledge of this lovely town, Santar. Nothing was too much trouble. We were also given a lovely breakfast. Would thoroughly recommend.

  • l can’t even begin to describe how amazing this stay was. Rui was so incredibly hospitable, attentive, accommodating, and always available for communication. We were running late driving in from Lisbon and he waited until midnight for us. He was so, so kind! He had a basket of breakfast goodies ready for us since it was late and he didn’t want to wake us up at 8AM the next day. His apartment was absolutely stunning and beautiful, the pictures don’t do it justice. The village was adorable and we wish we could have stayed here a whole week instead of just one day. This is probably the best Airbnb we’ve stayed at. We are coming back for sure and recommend anyone to stay here for a nice, relaxing stay!

  • Our stay in Casa Luis de Camoēs was great. The apartment is really nice, clean, fresh, beautifully constructed and with all the comfort you can think of. Rui and his wife Sara gave us a warm welcome. Every morning we got a great breakfast. It's really a nice place to relax in a little old village in development.

  • Very nice accommodation in a surprising village. At Rui the reception is full of attention and delicacy. Great breakfast.

  • We were really delighted with our stay at Santar. The apartment is beautiful and immaculately clean. Very consistent with photos.Rui and his wife are really nice people and very welcoming and we really were delighted to meet them. Breakfasts are top notch ... we will not hesitate to stay here again if we come back to the area. (Only small observation: we were 3 and our son slept in the sofa which is not necessarily very comfortable in sleeping mode (hollow in the middle)) Accommodation we recommend ++++

  • At first we expected the whole house to be private for us. The reality is that it is an apartment with 2 rooms, kitchen and bathroom; and the rest are common areas (washing machine area, pool, terraces, barbecues ...). But we have to say that we have been very well these days at Elsa's house. The facilities are very good and the attention of the family has been unbeatable at all times.

This is a recently renovated townhouse located in the historic town of Cabanas de Viriato, Central Portugal. If you are looking for an authentic Portuguese town where you can enjoy the countryside and have local amenities nearby then this is for you.
You will be staying in a beautiful granite house that is well over 200 years old, which has recently been renovated to accommodate guests. The house is made up of three floors, and includes: two bedrooms, a living room that adjoins onto the main bedroom, a kitchen, and bathroom with shower. It is a perfect space for a family with children or two couples. There are two entrances to the property, one into the kitchen on the ground floor and one with steps leading into the hallway on the first floor. Also available to you is our gardens and private swimming pool (Size: 9.5m x 5m). The pool is exclusively available to you and your party from 11am-5pm. Outside these hours we need to clean and maintain it. In the garden you will find a private outside eating area with a barbecue (BBQ) for your use. Near the poolside there are sun loungers, a small table and chairs, shaded by a large umbrella. These are for your use. We also have a ping pong table and a table football (foosball) table which you are welcome to use. The house has some of the best views of the Serra da Estrela mountains in the whole town. The garden is a paradise for birds. During the day you will hear their songs. It is visited by green and gold finches, blue tits, black redstarts, Sardinian warblers, house martins, swallows, and so many more birds. There is always a red kite flying above. If you are a bird watcher then you could spend all day just sat in the garden! You can also enjoy our fruit trees, including orange, tangerine, lemon, fig, hazelnut, olive and walnut trees at certain times of the year.
The house is located in the quiet and authentic Portuguese town of Cabanas de Viriato in Central Portugal. It has breathtaking views of the Serra da Estrela, which is home to the highest peak in Portugal. It is also the birth place and hometown of the Viriato, a Lusitanian chief. Casa do Passal, the mansion of WWII holocaust hero Aristides de Sousa Mendes, is located a 5 minute walk from the house. You are not allowed to go inside the mansion but this is definitely worth visiting if you have an interest in history. The town has two restaurants, three cafes, two local shops, bank with a cash machine, pharmacy and a post office. 4km down the road is Carregal do Sal where you will find a large supermarket, several restaurants, and shops. There is a large market there every 3rd Friday of the month. August is festival time in Portugal, where people dance in the streets and eat on long tables outside at the weekend. Each local village have their own festival week, but ours tends to be the first or second weekend in August. Everybody is in very high spirits, people tie bunting around the lamp posts, and processions go around the streets. The Portuguese enjoy fireworks at this time of the year.
  • With our family of 4 (two boys of 2 and 4) we had a great time at this fully equiped townhouse. It is quiet big, cool inside with a beautiful garden and pool. In the morning there is a place full of shade for a outdoor breakfast and in the evenings we have used the nice barbecue near the pool. Sue and Rob are fantastic people. They did everything to make our stay as comfortable as possible - for example there was a little baby pool setup and even some cool drinks in the fridge at arrival. It is the perfect place to relax and enjoy. We definitely want to come back!

  • We had a wonderfull stay with some wonderfull people! Sue and Rob thought about everything.. I mean everything! The house we stayed in was so beautyfull!Even better then the photos :) we had a very warm welcome and they were so nice to our two kids. The house was realy big and verry clean, the kichen is more than fully suplyed, there are enough towels, a realy nice bed(very important), a very nice, warm and clean pool wich we realy enjoyed. So thank you Sue and Rob, for a wonderfull holiday! We will recomand you to everyone!

  • What a fabulous place in a lovely village in the heart of the Dao wine region. It has 3 levels of beautifully appointed rooms in a 200year old house. Sue, Rob, and Laura treated us so well, and made our 5 night stay really special.

    Carol2017-09-23T00:00:00Z
  • From the beginning the communication with Sue (Susan) was great. She responded quickly to any questions and was very pro-active. We were welcomed with open arms and the place where we stayed exceeded our expectations. The pictures don't due enough justice to how beautiful this place is. The spaces are larger and more luxurious than they seem on the pictures. The kitchen is fully equipped (better than back home :-)) and the shower is great. And then, the garden, wow! True oasis of tranquility. Surrounded by an orange tree, lemon tree, fig tree, you can enjoy a great view over the valley all the way to the mountains. The pool is wonderful and has a nice temperature. The only sound you hear is a fig falling from the tree every now and then. During our first night, we were invited to join for a lovely lasagne. Both Rob and Sue are very talkative and great company, but also respect your privacy and time for yourself. Larger supermarkets are only a short drive away, allowing you to buy delicious fish which we were allowed to prepare on the BBQ of Rob and Sue. There are only two words I would say about staying in this townhouse in Cabanas the Viriato with Rob and Sue: Tranquility and Hospitality with capital T and H! Definitely recommend this place.

    Jasper2016-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • Very well equipped accommodation! Heartwarming welcome ! Sue and Robert are very friendly! To recommend

    Roselyne2017-07-12T00:00:00Z
  • Sue and Robert are absolutely lovely and full of attentions that helped make this a memorable one! The cottage is very well restored, very fresh, with a somewhat odd organization but we were very quick. The pool is very nice, with water at 30-32 degrees ... the dream! We went hiking: there is something for nature lovers! The only downside is the village of Cabanas which has little interest and does not live much.

Old traditional farmhouse surrounded by vineyards, the house was renovated in 2013 with modern comfort and ecological aspects. The entire house and the huge granite terrace are built for wheelchairs. The kitchen is equipped with all appliances and here guests also have access to the Internet. In the living room there is the sofa bed for 2 persons. The bathroom has grab handles at the stepless shower, WC / bidet and a height adjustable washbasin.
You will find peace and quiet here. The 2000m3 garden is completely fenced and offers small children and dogs a paradise to explore and wander around.
Vineyards and forest begin right outside the front door and the river is 20 minutes away.
  • Nous avons apprécié la maison, l'environnement paisible et la proximité des grandes villes (1 heure). La maison est très agréable et est typiquement portugaise. • My stay at Casa do Fogo was 10 of 10. Catarina and his family have built and equipped incredibly houses. The service you get is 10 out of 10, fully willing to help in anything you ask. His philosophy is that you feel like your guests, and they get it. Her husband taught her vineyards and private cellar with. 50 minutes from the beaches of Aveiro and 20min of Serra da Estrela natural park has the beach and the mountains entirely by hand. Very highly recommended. Congratulations on what you have achieved.

  • Where do I begin, everything was just out of this world! A hidden treasure in this quaint town. Lydia welcomed us so beautifully and her apartments are really something out of a magazine shoot. Homemade scones with fresh lemon curd, and homemade ice tea welcomed us. She helped with recommendations of where to eat, and waiting for us when we got home was a beautiful candle lit pathway to our apartment (just for us). It was the best night sleep, very comfortable beds and the highlight was the incredibly special (and again homemade) breakfast basket for us in the morning. It is without a doubt worth driving to Nelas just to stay in her apartments and recieved the warm and unique experience. Well done Casas do Patio, there is not enough rating stars to come close to how wonderful our stay was.

This tranquil haven is in our newly renovated granite house on the edge of a warm and welcoming village. It is a place to unwind. Access is excellent on paved roads right up to the house. Your apartment has a fully equipped kitchen, a bathroom with a shower, and a bedroom with a view of the mountains, as well as a communal living room and courtyard. The apartment has two private entrances.
The house sits on the edge of a warm and welcoming village, Fiais da Beira, in the heart of Portugal, the Beiras. In the village, there are two historic sites: a dolmen, or prehistoric burial site, and the Palheiras, or dozens of stone shelters on a granite mastiff, which some say is the old village and others the granary. The apartment is an excellent base for exploring central Portugal for which a car is essential. It is 1 hour from Torre, the highest point on mainland Portugal on the Serra da Estrelas; 1 hour from Viseu, and 1.5 hours from Coimbra. Portugal is personal. Forget the guidebooks. Get tips from the people living here: Suggested 2-DAY and 4-DAY ITINERARY (1-to-2 hour drive to the top of the Serra da Estrela Mountains) Day 1: The drive to the highest point in mainland Portugal (1,993 meters) is a must-do when touring this area. It is unforgettable! Turn left out of the village to Ervedal da Beira. At the gas station roundabout, take the first exit toward Oliveira do Hospital. After crossing the one-lane bridge, take the next left toward Travaninha and then a sudden right toward it. Simply follow this road for a pretty drive until you come to a T-junction where you turn left toward Seia. At the second roundabout, make a right. In Seia, follow the signs to Torre, which is your destination. Sculptural granite outcrops, an impressive dam and an imposing sculpture of Mary, Nossa Senhora da Estrela, chiseled out of the rock itself will amaze you. At Torre, there is a balloon-like weather station, a small museum which is open rarely, and two buildings in which vendors give tastes of the local wares. In the building nearer the weather station, walk downstairs. Directly in front of you, Nuno and his wife and family have their stall. Nuno is a good man who will treat you to cheeses, presunto, choriços, and porco preto (black pig) as well as wine and liquers. Chestnut, blackberry, and medrinho are just some of the liquors of the area. Meats and cheese can be vacuum packed for you. Wool blankets and sweaters, leather gloves and jackets, and cork purses and wallets are good value for money. Whatever you do, you must taste the eat-with-spoon Serra da Estrela cheese! It is a handmade sheep cheese that is delectable! When you leave Torre, you make a left. At the first roundabout, make a right toward Mantiegas. Drive 5 minutes. On the left side of the road, you will see the chiselled sculpture of Nossa Senhora da Estrela will dwarf you. Pull in there. You can walk up to the sculpture if you wish. When you leave Nossa Senhora da Estrela, make a right and backtrack down the mountain. Stop at the village of Sabugueiros. The Serra da Estrela dog is bred here. A few of the shops have cages of puppies out front. Have a coffee, a meio latte (coffee with milk), a gallao (latte), a cha verde (green tea) or a bica (espresso). There are also plenty of restaurants here. Continue down the mountain. Stop at the dam. You can pull in past it and park near a cafe. When you climb the steps to the top, you will look down into Lagoa Comprida (Long Lake). The lake was made and is part of the hydroelectric system. It is beautiful! Head back home to Fiais da Beira. For dinner, go to Casa de Grelhados in Vila Franca da Beira, a 10-minute drive away. It’s a typical Portuguese restaurant with bright lights, the television on, and delicious food for a low price. Day 2: Return to Seia as though you’re driving to Torre, but only drive right to Seia. You will come to a bend in the road and lots of tourist shops on the right with a big parking area. On the left side is a sign to the Museu do Pao, or Museum of Bread. It is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10h to 18h, and admission is €5 for adults. I am told that the restaurant is very good. The museum takes you on the journey of the making of bread, from growing the wheat to its sale. The shop there has a wide range of breads and abobora, or squash, jam which you can eat with your cheese. When leaving here, take a left and continue driving up the mountain a few minutes. On your right, you will see a sign toward the Museu Natural da Electricidade. It is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10h to 16h (autumn and winter) and until 18h in spring and summer. Admission is €3 for adults. I found fascinating a film of mules and people carrying poles up the mountains to install the first electricity. Back in Fiais da Beira, walk 10 minutes to the Palheiras. Dozens of granite shelters on a huge granite rock make it unique in Portugal. People drive from all over looking for it and, I’m certain, that many give up before finding it. You won’t have this problem. Walk toward the village and make the second left. Go to the end of the road in the village and turn right. You will find yourself walking on a huge rock surrounded by shelters. Some say this is the old village and others say that this was the granary. A visit at sunset will give you fantastic photographs of the village and chapel spire from up high. Cross the road in Fiais da Beira and take a 30-minute walk to the village’s dolmen (see directions above), a prehistoric burial place of granite stones for someone of high social standing. Dolmens, or antas as they called in Portuguese, are plentiful in this area. At this one in Fiais da Beira, there is even an information board. Walk to the main road and cross it to the bus shelter. You will come to two picnic tables where you turn left. Go uphill to a sign on the right and turn right. Before the road climbs up, turn right. You will pass a sheep pen on the right. Take the next left. In a few minutes, you may see the dolmen on your left. Take the second left to it. The dolmen, which is composed of several rocks, is about 8 feet tall. For dinner, try Cristina, which is 10 minutes away on the main road toward Vila Franca da Beira. Instead of making a left turn to go to Casa de Grelhados, stay on that road. In a few minutes, you will see a large parking lot on the left. This is Cristina, which is pricier than Casa de Grelhados with food just as good. Day 3: Ponte de Romana, or the Roman Bridge (10-minute drive and a 20-minute walk) The Roman Bridge is a gem. It is a tranquil place, and you are almost guaranteed to have it to yourself. Drive to the main road leading outside of the village. Turn right. In a short distance, you make the first left. Drive over a small bridge and a turning on the left toward Andorinha. Soon, you will see a sign on the right “Ponte Romana,” which has been knocked down. Pull in off the road and park here. Follow the sign down. Go straight pass a turning on the right. Walk uphill and take the next right before the road continues to climb steeply. Follow this road. You will hear the water. Turn right onto the bridge. The best views of it are to the left on the rocks. Bobadela (20 minute-drive from the Roman bridge) is a village with remains of a Roman forum and an amphitheatre, which you are free to explore. To get there, follow the directions above until after you cross over the bridge. Then, you should take the next left. Stay on this road until you come to the roundabout with large sculptural figures of women. Make a right here and follow the road until you see tall columns on the right. Park around here. The columns are in the Forum. The amphitheatre is on the road to the right of them. Walk to the end, and it is there. You would have walked past a free museum of past life and art, which is open some days. Worth a look. Piodao (1 hour from Bobadela; 1 hour, 15 minutes from Fiais da Beira) Piadao is one of the villages whose houses are made out of schist, or Aldeias do Xisto. Here you can find a restaurant or café for your lunch. Spend the afternoon exploring this area by car or by foot. Day 4 – Viseu (1-hour from Fiais da Beira) Museu do Quartzo - The setting is in a former quarry. So, the building itself is part of the history of quartz in the area. There also is a splendid display of quartz from around the world. The docents here, as they are in other local museums, go out of their way to engage visitors in the subject matter. It is scheduled to open Tuesday through Sunday, 10h-12h, 14h-17h. It is located right outside Viseu in Nova de Campo. Se, or Cathedral of Viseu (15-minute drive from the Quartz Museum) Casa da Ribeira, Avenida Emidio Navarro 177, Viseu (6-minute walk from the cathedral) This is a changing showcase of local artisan work, which may include the black pottery of Tondela, needlework and sculpture. Some pieces are for sale at good prices. I hope that the suggested itineraries are of some help as you plan your vacation. Thank you! There are no buses or trains stopping in Fiais da Beira. However, I can pick you up at the train station in Nelas.
Palheiras, dolmen, forest, and peace... Supermarkets are 30 minutes away in Oliveira do Hospital (Intermarche, Lidl, Pingo Doce and Continente) and in Tabua (Intermarche and Lidl). On Sunday morning, the market in Tabua is worth a look. Stay for an outdoor lunch of grilled chicken. Park in the Lidl car park.

  • Cynthia was a great host. We arrived at her wonderful large blue house on the top of the hill to the view and hills around us which are even better than you see in the photo! The space we had was great, a large bedroom with brilliant views, our own kitchen and en suite bathroom. Cynthia also left us some home-made wine, marmalade and olive oil for us to eat, all were fantastic. She has a lot of land which you can explore and roam around and the village is also very pretty with lots to see. The Roman Dolmen (ancient burial) site is a must!

  • The room with a view is indeed a room with super nice view. The area is quiet, super to stroll around with some historical places to visit nearby. If you just want to be away from everything and completely relax, than this is the place to be. I loved walking around her land with the fruit and olive trees. Upon arrival she left me all kind of nice attentions from her own land. Will surely go back here!
