Our secluded cabin sits on the edge of timber overlooking the Des Moines River!
Cozy up in front of the indoor wood stove during those cold winter months, or enjoy the cool breeze off the river on the warmer days!
There are 2 properties located at the end of this private driveway. There is plenty of distance between the properties to enjoy a quiet getaway!
  • Fantastic get-away! Beautiful, close to the state park, fully-equipped! My children and I loved it!

  • A great cabin by a quiet river! Very comfortable and clean. Loved the fireplace on the cool nights. Brianna was very responsive to any questions or concerns I had. Would stay there again for sure!

  • We had a great time! The cabin was very cozy and the view of the river was nice. Brianna was an excellent host!

  • Amazing! Excellent Everything! An exceptional little getaway gem. All of the cabin reviews were spot on. 6 out of 5 stars! Everything was above and beyond. Definitely hope to book a future retreat here. Enjoy!

  • Brianna's place was great! Far enough outside of town that we had plenty of space to ourselves, but close enough that we had no trouble getting food or groceries. The cabin itself was lovely and very cozy, I would absolutely recommend it!

  • Other reviewers were spot-on when describing the picturesque nature of this property. The owners were thoughtful with the touches they put throughout the property. The memory foam bed was much more comfortable than we expected. In the bedroom, it is also equipped with abundant hooks to hang clothes, a side table that fits near the foot of the bed, a fan tower that can be used as white noise, two windows, it's own temperature-controlled electric radiant heat, and an outlet near the head of the bed, which is useful for those who use a CPAP machine. The baseboard heat is nice as it is non-drying, quickly heats the space, and is incredibly comfortable. If you want to stay indoors, there are a few games above the refrigerator, multiple DVDs, and plenty of channels to choose from. The large windows allow for fantastic birdwatching from indoors. The flowing river's ripples were rather peaceful to watch. Ducks and geese were common sights to see floating by. The parking is at the base of a hill. You will need to walk across a sturdy bridge and up a hill. If it has been raining, the wood can get slippery, and you might need to step in mud. If there is freezing rain, the steps can ice up, so be very careful. As of this writing there was not a handrail up the hill. My main suggestion is for the owners to have a handrail installed on one side of this hill. Last, the owners were wonderful. They have kept a nice cabin, were very easy to reach, and very responsive. We will definitely consider coming back. Thank you!

  • Incredible and truly one of a kind!

  • This cabin is perfect in many ways - location, size, views, privacy, amenities etc. We knew we wanted a cabin feel but didn't know if/ what our options would be here in Iowa. We were lucky enough to come across this cabin. It wasn't a long drive from where we live, its in a town full of history and things to do and have I mentioned the fact that its right on the DSM river?! It is tucked away just outside of town with its own privacy, fire pit, front deck and wood stove. They say that they try to provide fire wood.. if you plan to stay in the winter and have access to bring your own I would just in case. We did and were glad we did. We know how much work splitting wood and hauling it can be especially in the winter so if its not there when you get there you only have yourself to blame.... They were very responsive and polite! We can't wait to go back in the summer, utilize the outdoor area and hit the trails at the near by state park!

  • Kellie’s place was awesome. Beautiful brand new covered porch that overlooked the serene Des Moines river. The loft was great for my kids and the double bed in the master bedroom (albeit small) was soooo comfortable. Kellie was the best AirBnb host we’ve ever had! So understanding and such great local tips. We would absolutely stay here again. Thank you Kellie!

  • Cozy cabin with great view of the Des Moines river. Small cabin, but great use of space makes it seem much larger. Mattresses were super comfortable, modern memory foam. Outdoor porch overlooking the river begs for an evening with friends.

  • We had a relaxing time hanging out and enjoying this wonderful cabin. The rain on the tin roof was so refreshing and relaxing, too. Our Maltese and Goldendoodle also enjoyed the property and their time with us, making the cabin extra cozy. Perhaps the best part though was a friendly visit from Kellie, just to make sure we were settled in, and to make sure we knew she was available for anything we needed. Kellie was so authentic and real. And she treated us more as friends, rather than guests. We can't recommend highly enough!

  • Little Cedar Lodge is a fantastic little place if you're looking for a cabin getaway from the everyday challenges of work and life in general. My wife and I spent a couple of nights as a weekend getaway for her birthday and absolutely loved it! It is hidden in the small unincorporated town of Mt Sterling, IA. So it's somewhat off the Grid which is exactly what we were looking for. The cabin has all the amenities you could want, and is very warm, cozy, and inviting. We enjoyed watching scary movies next to the warm electric fireplace on the comfortable furniture in particular. The hosts were also very helpful and provided us with a lot of information about the surrounding area and we were able to get out for some delicious local food because of it. We also loved that cedar wood smell the minute you walk into the door. All in all a great little place to stay in the very quiet little village that is Mt Sterling.

AMISH Country. Escape to Van Buren County in SE Iowa where history is rich, the people friendly and the country beautiful. Stay in this pioneer country church built in 1860 within walking distance to a 1700 acre state park on the Mormon trail.
Inspiration. As an artist I feel that this location is tranquil and spiritual - that of a place built with love and care. You can feel it during the quiet times. In addition to the good vibes it is also an excellent starting place for day trips or to break away and enjoy nature and history. Visit quaint neighboring villages in the SE Iowa nestled in green hills against the Des Moines River - don't miss local villages Bonaparte and Bentonsport and take day trips to the Amish Market, Fairfield/Vedic City home of the Raj Spa and Maharishi meditation center, the American Gothic house in Eldon, the Amana historic colony north, Kaloma village, or the Nauvoo Living History center east to the Illinois/Iowa state line. Experience a unique Mississippi River city lifestyle and food at Burlington an hour away, or Mark Twain's Hannibal, MO. Within view is the entrance to Keosauqua's Lacey State Park, an impeccably beautiful 1700 acres on the Des Moines River; and minutes from Lake Sugema where you can fish and horseback ride.
Rural area - country homes - private but neighbors nearby; walking / biking distance to town.
  • Loved our stay at Marianne's comfy cozy restored 1860's church! I never tired looking at all her treasures - she has fantastic taste. In addition to the asthetics, everything is very comfortable and all things you would expect in an Airbnb are well stocked. If I ever have occassion to be in this sweet little river town again I will most assuredly stay at Marianne's place. Word to the wise - try to arrive during daylight hours. It is ridiculously easy to find during the day but a bit tricky in the dark.

    Sarah2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • Marianne's Historic Pioneer Church home is an absolute delight....from the very old and uneven wood floors to the high ceilings and old windows, we felt comfortable at the very beginning. The kitchen, great room and bathroom are very spacious and allowed us all the accommodations of home. The only thing I was worried about was the bed, we all know how difficult it is to sleep in a different bed but this one was amazing, we had no trouble falling asleep and staying asleep it was so comfortable. We would definitely recommend Marianne's to anyone looking for a little get away.

    Mark2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • The home is everything it is described to be. People in the community are very friendly. We enjoyed the home cooked meals at the local restaurants but there is an adequate kitchen in the home. We enjoyed the "Tour of Barns" and the fall festivities in the surrounding villages.

    Pamela2018-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • Charming place with artistic touches everywhere. Kitchen was well stocked with everything you'd need to make a meal (we didn't, but I was impressed with the inventory of cookware and such). Even though it is an old church building, the place was extremely clean and well-cared for. There is a gas fireplace in the living room and lots of great books that made for cozy evenings. We felt right at home and would stay again if we are ever in Keo in the future! My favorite little touch: the label on the bedroom door frame that read, "Naps and such" (many doors and cupboards were smartly labeled, but I found that one especially lovely). Marianne was a great host, as well. Easy to communicate with and very helpful.

    Jen2018-10-07T00:00:00Z
  • This is definitely a pioneer house with uneven floors, traffic noise and no air conditioning (plenty of fans). We enjoyed the decorating style Marianne used with antiques and artwork. The furniture was comfortable, and the facilities were fine for a couple. We used this central location to explore all of Van Buren County. We would recommend this home for moderate temperature stays.

    Dennis2018-09-04T00:00:00Z
  • This is the perfect retreat for a couple's weekend getaway. Marianne was wonderful! The history of the house and surrounding towns will always leave you wanting more.

    Angie2017-07-04T00:00:00Z
  • We so enjoyed our anniversary stay at Marianne's home. We were pleasantly surprised by all there was to do to around the villages of Van Buren. The house was located within walking distance of town, along a pretty path crossing the river. We were looking for a quiet, quaint getaway and we found it. The nearby State park was one of the better we have been to also. We appreciated our quiet time away.

Come relax and enjoy Porch Time under a canopy of trees. Play the baby grand if you like, spend time reading in front of the fireplace or in one of our four lovely bedrooms, and enjoy a delicious, home-cooked breakfast. We welcome you!
We are just two blocks from the beautiful Des Moines River (three from the landing), making this ideal lodging for those paddling downriver, exploring Van Buren County, or visiting family nearby. A grocery store, post office, restaurant, and other amenities are all within three blocks of our Arts and Crafts style home that offers four well-appointed, lovely rooms for our guests.
We love it that our B & B is only two blocks from the Des Moines River and that Farmington is part of the Mormon Trail. Just across the river is Indian Lake Park, 166 gorgeous acres filled with wildlife. Indian Lake itself, the 44-acre crown jewel of the park, offers swimming, fishing, canoes for rent, and a nature trail for hiking around its perimeter. Farmington also has a beautiful extended riverfront park with benches and a picnic shelter, and is adjacent to Shimek State Forest (8,000+ acres).
  • Great place to stay, clean and cozy. Breakfast was awesome!!! There is a lot to do in the area so will plan to come back and maybe hit the state park (state parks are free in Iowa)

    Sandy2019-11-09T00:00:00Z
  • Porch Time B&B is welcoming, sort of rustic, and sparkling clean. The literal porch is very comfortable for long talks or soaking up the small town atmosphere. I enjoyed having the option of air conditioning or open windows (my favorite), and slept well. The breakfasts were rich and satisfying. Elizabeth and David have a gem of a place in Farmington, and can recommend lots of local attractions if you have time to visit the surrounding area.

    Ilene2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • A wonderful get away for the two of us. Our bedroom was well appointed with chairs and a super comfy bed. Plenty of clean towels and the shared bath has a great tub/shower combination. We enjoyed spending time with Elizabeth in the afternoon on the front porch and shared stories of our lives. Elizabeth is a wonderful hostess at their lovely BnB. Delicious breakfast and thoughtful touches like ice water in the hallway at night and coffee in the morning. An older home with character and classic beauty.

    Kathy2019-07-27T00:00:00Z
  • Very nice old house in a super quiet neighborhood. Elizabeth goes out of her way to make you feel at home. The porch is very nice, but a heat wave precluded us getting to use it.

    Steve2019-07-20T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great time staying with Elizabeth. She has a beautiful home and a fabulous porch. She is very knowledgeable about the area and gave us many tips on where to go eat and things to do. We will definitely stay again if we are going to the area.

    Cindy2019-06-09T00:00:00Z
  • Elizabeth and Dave provide a traditional BnB with personal service in their home, hot coffee always ready, charming antique furniture, hot breakfast, in a cozy 1920's craft's style house.

    John2018-10-21T00:00:00Z
  • Comfortable and welcoming. Clean room and nice people.

  • This place is great! Keosauqua is so fun for kids, and this location can't be beat. I especially liked that it was not directly on the lake so I didn't have to worry about my kids playing outside, but it was so close to the lake that we walked over there every day. What a fun place which we will be sure to return to in the future!

Located in amongst gently-rolling hills in rural Northeast Missouri, Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage is close to nothing but on the way to lots of places. It is amazingly quiet here, and you will see more stars than you ever knew existed. 70 members live in this community based on ecological sustainability, and there are many examples of natural and alternative construction (strawbale, cob, etc.) We have opened our community to demonstrate our take on sustainable living, and ask that guests be respectful of the privacy of residents. Please ask about a tour! For more info please see the Dancing Rabbit website.

Rutledge, Missouri is not close to much, but is on the way to lots of places. We're 50 minutes from Kirksville, MO (home of Truman State University) and 3 hours from both St. Louis and Kansas City. The area surrounding Dancing Rabbit is very rural, and conservative. In the town of Rutledge, Zimmerman's Store is a must-see (open 8-5, Monday - Saturday). On the 2nd Friday and Saturday of each month (April through October) is the famous Rutledge Flea Market (located on Highway V in Scotland County).

    • Tiny. Space to think, sleep, be. • Quaint. Built into a prairie hillock, could just as well be called the hobbit hole! • Comfortable. Wired. Resilient to heat and cold. • Customized. Hand built down to the bed, desk, skylight, stove.
The Gnome Dome has proven invaluable to me in my time to Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage. It has provided me with shelter over the first few winters while I established my other infrastructure. It has taught me important lessons about what does and doesn't work in buildings, and how to fix those things. And it has been an outlet for creativity and troubleshooting challenges in tiny house design. Physically, it is an earth bag dome embedded into a hill and opening out onto a patio (this patio will be brick, but is currently gravel). It's a very round space-- it's hard to find a straight line anywhere! While very quaint and cozy, the Gnome Dome is a very small space. The custom bed is about 6'3" long. I'm 6', and it has served me through two winters, but it's something you should be aware of, particularly if you're tall. It will be comfortable, but the exterior landscaping is far from finished (I will likely be installing stone masonry while you're there). It will be cool, but it may be humid (humidity is a big part of the weather here in NE Missouri). It does have a fan/ventilation system to help condition the air. I have since moved into my own house, but few things delight me more than seeing others use and appreciate this space!

  • Dancing Rabbit is an amazing conclave of like-minded individuals. I was looking for a short experience during my one-night stay, and I got that and so much more! I shared a delicious, eco-conscious dinner of fresh ingredients and with lovely company; I tried a dozen locally-sourced wines and took two bottle home with me; I slept in an earth lodge; and I learned about a completely different way of life. At Kyle's suggestion I also shopped at a local Mennonite store and enjoyed a great cup of coffee at the Bed & Breakfast. I can't believe I crammed so much into a single overnight! I highly recommend Kyle's lodging, but be aware that it is Rustic with a capital "R". Be ready to use an outhouse, smell some BO, and leave a bit dirtier than you arrived. TOTALLY WORTH IT!

  • Words can not express how awesome it was being exposed to the Dancing Rabbit ECHO village and getting to meet Kyle. The Gnome Dome was cozy, comfortable, clean and truly the most unique special space I've ever stayed in. Kyle was not only a great host but a genuine amazing person. All good!

  • The place to be if you are looking for sustainablity and a natural way of life. The dome is amazing. Not sure if it is suitable for two persons, but as a single you can't wish for more... Thanks, Kyle. It was and is an adventure to be part of the world we have on our hand.

  • What a unique experience! Kyle's Gnome Dome is in the middle of a burgeoning 'eco-village' in NE Missouri. It's a little out of the way, which was exactly what I was looking for. The village was busy with activity, both socially and with natural building projects, and the Gnome Dome allowed me to interact at my own pace. It was clean, comfortable (even as the mercury reached into the 90s) and very quiet (even in the middle of a thunderstorm). Plus, Kyle was super helpful with information and orientation. This was more than just lodging; it was an "eco-adventure!" No extra charge.

  • This was a fantastic place to stay. Everyone was welcoming, kind, and lovely to be around. I enjoyed my trip and stay. I wish I could have stayed longer. The food was phenomenal and getting to help with the goats was the best! I'll definitely be back.

  • Kyle was an incredible host. He welcomed us to the Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage with an in-depth tour and delicious meals with his Critter kitchen community. The other residents of the Ecovillage were extremely hospitable. During our short stay, we learned so much about how Dancing Rabbit is reducing their environmental impact and building community in an intentional and alternative way. We ate and slept well and had beautiful weather. I can honestly say this airbnb was unlike any other experience I've had. Thank you, Kyle!

  • Kyle was great and made my stay amazing. I could have kicked off my shoes and stayed forever. What a beautiful experience. Kyle was a great tour guide and super knowledable. The ecovillave itself was such a mystical place and I can't wait to return.

  • It is an awesome place and awesome community. I definitively recommend to visit there, even if is far from big cities, you will feel immersed into a big community with wonderful people, so open minded. They will take care of you so well. Kyle is super artistic, like so much to share with you his knowledge, super altruistic. I would definitively repeat my stay there. He already warn me of the size of the bed, it is true it is small, but I'm 1,74m and i have been sleeping so fine. People need to know it is an eco-community, so you should imagine like living in a camping (shared services) where everyone cares about you. So nice, I totally recommend. And better if you participate in a CoOp kitchen.
