  • Beautiful property. Idilic location, right on The Pennine Way. So many beautiful walks, only wish I’d had longer. Hosts warm, welcoming and available for any questions and tips on the local area. Red squirrels were a delight to watch daily.

  • Sally and Brain were amazing hosts! The cottage itself was beautiful and the facilities were incredible. We can’t wait to come back again and explore Garrigill!

  • Moorside is a hidden gem. It has everything you need for your stay and it is really thought out in its layout and finish. There are lots of personal touches to make you feel really welcome and comfortable. I loved my stay and wouldn’t hesitate to return.

    Georgina2020-02-01T00:00:00Z
  • Our second visit to Moorside and everything was perfect again! We witnessed even more red squirrel activity this time and loved the addition of the summer house so we could sit with a cup of tea watching the wildlife. Thank you Brian and Sally!!

The bedroom is a comfortable and stylish double room in a converted Methodist chapel. Guests have sole use of a unique, luxury bathroom with shower, Sauna and hot tub across the hall and access to a shared living room, kitchen and utilities. The views from the bedroom are across the valley to the West and we are located just a five minute walk from the village of Garrigill and off the Pennine way. We are also on the C2C cycleway, so a perfect place for treating those tired limbs to some TLC!
Breakfast is not included in the price but you can prepare your own in our kitchen and store food in your own fridge. We will happily bring the shopping in for you if you don’t have your own transport. We do provide free tea and coffee facilities in your room. Our dog lives downstairs but we ask that you don't bring your own as we are keen to keep the guest areas free from dog hair. However, you will come into contact with her in the shared spaces and she does love a cuddle. The chapel is an ongoing renovation project and some areas may also have some dust, however the areas open to guests are clean and dust free. We are also happy to provide washing and drying facilities at a small extra charge as we understand how important this is after a long day on the hill or bike. There is a lockable indoor space for your bikes and car parking is on the quiet roadside directly outside the chapel.
A beautiful waterfall flows directly outside the chapel and can be heard from most rooms. Garrigill, just five minutes walk away, is a quiet village with a shop and art gallery. At present the pub is undergoing renovation work but there are occasional pub nights in the village hall as well as other events. We are happy to provide transport to and from Alston if you travelled by foot or by bike. Alston itself is a bustling town with plentiful attractions, events, eateries, pubs and independent shops. Also, nearby Nenthead hosts a newly opened Arts and Visitor centre which has numerous events on throughout the year. Please note that phone signal in and around the village is limited although some providers do work in the chapel. We also have wifi but no working TV signal. The hosts are keen musicians and if you wish to make your own fun there are a plethora of musical instruments (some homemade) that you can play for the evenings entertainment.
  • This converted chapel is amazing and the hosts fantastic. We had a great chat about the history of the property and got loads of tips for local amenities. We could have stayed in the hot tub for another three hours, it's like a spa treatment especially coupled with the sauna. See if you can spot a red squirrel on your stay here and enjoy the tour of the rest of the building!

    Matthew2020-03-14T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed here for one night but wished we had stayed for more. This was so much more than expected, the chapel was exquisitely designed with a homely, spiritual feel. We slept the best we have in a long long time! I can’t put into words how amazing the spa bathroom is, with sauna and the most amazing hot tub, it’s an experience everyone should try! The extra touches like the locally sourced handmade soaps and beautiful fluffy towels were fantastic. It was like a 5star spa, we were flabbergasted at how low the price is for this experience. The bedroom is straight opposite the spa bathroom and everything was clean and immaculate! The hosts are really genuinely lovely people who couldn’t have made us welcome any more. The waterfall in the garden is spectacular as is all your surroundings in the area. Couldn’t recommend this place more for a relaxing stay to totally zone out from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Thank you so much, we will 100% be returning and couldn’t recommend this place enough!

  • Sarka-Jo and Mos were fantastic hosts! From the moment we arrived they made us feel very welcome and gave us lots of great local tips. It's impressive what they did with the place and glad to be able to say that I slept (very well!) in a chapel. Although the entire place is amazing, we spent most of our time in the bathroom which has everything you need if you're a spa lover! The instructions for the sauna and hot tub were also really easy to follow. Thank you both so much for your hospitality, we really enjoyed our time in the chapel(bathroom)! Warm wishes, Mariana

    Mariana2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • Just had a lovely 2 night stay for our 20th wedding anniversary, the chapel is beautiful and the hosts are very friendly and welcoming and make you feel at home, the two collies are the best behaved dogs I have ever met and very welcoming also, the room was very comfortable and clean and the bathroom is to die for! We were a little worried about the roads due to the snow but the host kept us updated and we arrived safely, thank you for a wonderful stay and we hope to be back in the summer ❤️😊

    Anthony2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • A truely special stay! A unique converted chapel made into a superb home. The room came with an exceptional luxurious bathroom suite complete with sauna and hot tub. Amazing! Sarka-Jo and Mos were both welcoming and friendly, on hand with local information and tips which helped us to get the most out of our weekend. Thanks for making my birthday weekend a special one to remember!!

    Joanne2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • This place is a real gem, we loved the building and the bathroom especially! We stayed for the weekend after my partner proposed and found this place a perfect little hideaway, even with storm Dennis battering away outside! It just made it all the more cosy

    Chloe2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing place, absolutely lovely hosts. Highly recommended.

  • We had such a lovely time staying with Sarka-Jo. The location is amazing and the waterfall close by was great to go see. The hot tub and whole space in general is beautiful, and Sarka-Jo and her partner were really welcoming and made us feel at home. Planning on coming back for the summer...

Part of a converted barn/dairy dating from around 1700, this 2 bed annexe can be separated from our home for guests to use as self-contained accommodation. Stone walls, woodburning stove, built in pizza oven (suitable for warmer weather only). Rural location in the stunning North Pennines AONB, sitting at around 1500ft above Garrigill. Ideal for the Pennine Way the South Tyne Trail and the C2C cycle route. A short walk to Ashgill Force and within a 20 minute drive of High Force and Low Force.
The property has an open plan kitchen/dining space/lounge with woodburning stove, a bathroom with electric shower and heated towel radiator, a twin bedroom and a double bedroom, both of which have sink units. The property has internet, a TV with Sky, a DVD player (some DVDs are provided), family games, toys and games for younger guests and books all available for our guests. There is parking for one car on the property and the use of some of our outside space. Please note we are 1500ft up in the fells and the descent into the property from the road is steep. It is possible to park on the road side if you prefer. High chair, travel cot and baby bath are available on request. Heating through wood burner and night storage heaters. We will provide a supply of logs, kindling and firelighters to get you started. Additional logs can be purchased for £4 per bag on request. We are not on mains water and the property is spring fed. At times we do have discoloured water, which is perfectly safe as it is UV filtered on the property. We do however provide bottled water if you prefer. The open plan space has a built in pizza oven, however as the main oven area is outside, it is not suitable for use during the colder months as it is difficult to bring it to the correct temperature. There is a two burner gas bbq available for guests, along with some outdoor games and a picnic hamper (ice packs in freezer). There is a small herb garden and guests are free to cut herbs for their own use during the growing season.
Our nearest village is Garrigill which is just under 2 miles away and which benefits from a Post Office/shop, and a Gallery. Alston is around 5 miles away and has some lovely shops, eateries and the South Tynedale Railway -http://www.south-tynedale-railway.org.uk. Penrith is around a 40 minute drive away and Carlisle around 45 mins away by car. Yad Moss ski slopes are about a mile away - http://www.yadmoss.co.uk. Middleton in Teesdale is a lovely little town and just 25 mins away by car. Barnard Castle is around a 40 minute drive. In Spring 2018 the British public voted for their 100 favourite walks. Walk number 34 - High Force and Low Force is only 20 mins from the house https://theoutdoorguide.co.uk/britains-favourite-walks/high-force-low-force-county-durham/

Cooking on the AGA was an experience and one I thoroughly enjoyed. Check out the pictures of it being built too, very interesting. We will be back in the future.

'Stokoe Cottage', is a period property set over 3 floor, with lots of history & character. Right in the heart of Alston Town in the North Pennines, our cottage is tucked away from the main market square along a cobbled lane. Ideal for walkers and cyclists doing the Coast to Coast route. Quiet village away from all the hustle & bustle of daily life. Great pubs and eating places near by. .
The Cottage is set over 3 floors. On the ground floor is a fully equipped farmhouse kitchen with everything you would expect for, including large range cooker, dishwasher, fridge, toaster & kettle and all the usual pots, pans, crockery, cutlery and glassware. Use of a small freezer in utility room. Middle floor houses a large living room, period charm continues with original exposed stone wall and original wooden boards to the staircase, along with stunning Georgian windows, wooden shutters and window seats to take in the wonderful views. A large TV on wall, and our log burning stove is set on a large stone heath for those cold winter nights. On the top floor is a comfy bedroom with exposed stone and brick to one wall. For a good night sleep there is a king size bed, bedside cabinets and chest of drawers, plus a build in wardrobe on the landing. Off the landing is the bathroom, three piece suite with corner bath and shower overhead, exposed stone wall and bespoke tiling by a local artist, which makes this bathroom very quirky.
    Friendly people
  • Lovely place to stay - very quirky and cosy. Right in the centre of town with all the shops and restaurants nearby. The bed was a pillowy dream - had one of the best nights sleep I’ve had for a long time!

This self contained unit was the old Sunday school in a converted Methodist chapel close to the village of Garrigill in the remote North Pennines. It has off road parking, private entrance and a yard to sit out in the evening sun. There is a well equipped kitchen with tea and coffee provided and a fresh coffee machine. The bathroom has a bath and shower and the bedroom has a double bed with two single sofa beds. This is a perfect quiet retreat for lone travellers, couples, families or friends.
A beautiful waterfall flows directly outside the chapel and can be heard from most rooms. Garrigill, just five minutes walk away, is a quiet village with a shop and art gallery. At present the pub is closed for renovation but there are occasional pub nights in the village hall as well as other events. We are happy to provide transport to and from Alston if you travelled by foot or by bike and local taxi numbers. Alston itself is a bustling town with plentiful attractions, events, eateries, pubs and independent shops (although some do close at the start of the week in Winter). Also, nearby Nenthead hosts a newly opened Arts and Visitor centre which has numerous events on throughout the year. Please note that phone signal in and around the village is limited although some providers do work in the chapel. We also have Wifi and analogue TV with a number of channels. We are happy to accommodate you and your family including furry friends. Please let us know when booking how many to expect and how you would like the beds to be arranged as one pull out bed could also be used in the living area if necessary.
If you're keen to explore the area on foot then the quietly spectacular Ashgill Waterfall is an hours walk away. You also need to look out for our local Red Squirrel population whenever you walk into the village. There are a number of attractions a car ride away and the hosts are available to talk to you about these. A number of maps and leaflets are also provided in the annexe. Please see our guide which continues to be updated on Airbnb about local recommendations for restaurants, pubs and cafes nearby. However, the beauty of Alston Moor is it's seclusion, peace and quiet. You will therefore find the chapel a very quiet place to stay making it ideal for a retreat for writers or musicians or just people who want to get away from it all.
  • I have a plan to tour this great mainland UK we enjoy and was thinking of bumming it, sleeping in the car or tent, or heaven forfend, staying in charmless, character vacuum hotels. If I could be guaranteed this quality at a value that cannot be overstated then the tent won’t ever see daylight. If you’re looking for far from the madding crowds, escape, fresh air, stylish and perfectly pitched accommodation and unintrusive hosts but massively hospitable hosts then I doubt you’ll come across better. It’s rare I go back. I’ll be back. Thank you so much Ok I may still camp now and again to stay in touch with my little boy inner self ;) In tune guitar had a little exercise. • Wow the pictures of this place don't do it the justice it deserves ! The building is incredible. The big old doors and the windows , it's a real architectural jem! And the location right next to the waterfall is so amazing too. Its right out in the sticks and was so dark and free from any light pollution , yet a 10 min drive away is a beautiful little town centre with a good size co-op and lots of tea rooms and local produce shops. Loads of walks to hit from off the door step as well as amazing panoramic views. The facilities are great too. Lovely big space and so warm and cozy. The bed is sooooooo comfy too. The bath was a great touch after a long day hiking and traveling too. The host was very friendly too and took the time to show us around and answer any questions. Communication was very easy and check in was a breeze. I really would highly recommend this place. The wifi was fab and there is also tv and some great board games which we loved playing. Will definitely be back

This hexagonal cabin encompasses all thats Romantic and cosy ,with stove oven, wood /peat burner / .A pixie cabin ! Is warm small but spacious..set in the "enchanted wood" where the billy goat gruffs live! and Alston Anaconda ! relaxing 24/7 hottub.
Please note the cabin is 30 meters from bathroom and hottub , THE TUB is for your sole use you only share with your partner ! ha ha ...this gives the quirky ...away from it all feel....yet the hottub and bathroom are close by 30 metres ....its impossible to have them "lumped" together ! I have had "comments" about this if you want it "all together" then this is not for you ....there is an overnight "glamping" toilet to the rear of the cabin Please note this is GLAMPING guests are to bring duvet cover, bottom sheet ,pillow cases and towels all else supplied except clothes ,personal effects and food .....!
Simply the views , the cabin ,The animals , Farm holiday , yet private ,Romantic secluded but accessible oh and the Tub !!
  • Perfect place for a special getaway... truly breathtaking!

  • This place made for a great weekend, perfect mix of romantic getaway and rustic charm.

    Daniel2019-12-16T00:00:00Z
  • We loved everything about this place the cabin was so cosy and romantic, the hot tub was great and the animals and all the little touches from the hosts made it extra special! Great little getaway 100% recommend if you’re looking for a cosy relaxing break! We will definitely be back :) Thank you!!

  • Such an amazing place, couldn't of expected any more a perfect location for a little romance and time out of the hustle and bustle!

    Nick2019-11-27T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing hosts, extremely friendly and welcoming - plus you get to meet the rescue animals! The cabin is unbelivable! It really does go above and beyond all expectations. A perfect 'away from it all' romantic break. Will definitely be returning. Thank you for having us!

    John-Joe2019-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • I would definitely recommend the Woodcutters cabin. Eddie was a wonderful host on arrival. Showing us how everything worked and introducing us to all the animals. Cabin was lovely and warm when we arrived and hot tube was ready to use. Beautiful scenery, picturesque walk into Alston along the river. A memorable stay for all the right reasons.

    David2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • Every inch of the inside of the cabin is used to it's best potential to give you everything you need for a couple of days of lovely isolation! The drive up to the cabin from the motorway is amazing, you end up at 1900m high at one point! I would recommend the more confident driver take the wheel though as it is very twisty and turny. Make sure to take some milk for your brews, if you're not a fan of geese I would say either prepare yourself or maybe look for somewhere else as there is a herd that lives in the fields surrounding the cabin and they hiss haha! Thanks again for our stay😊

    Laura2019-10-19T00:00:00Z
  • The wife and I had a fantastic stay in the cabin! Hosts were friendly, showed us around and then left us to it for the weekend. Cabin was perfect and had been heated with the lovely wood burning stove ready for our arrival. Hot tub was also ready and was a joy to relax in whenever we felt like it. Lots of nice touches such as a bottle of wine left in cabin for us on arrival. Quirky little place with all the animals. Beautiful surrounding area! Thanks to Eddie and Anne Louise for helping make our honeymoon run so smoothly. Always felt comfortable during our stay. What a fantastic and unique place!

Apartment no 3 is situated In the centre of the Historic town of Alston. Haven for walkers, cyclists and anglers. Alston is located in Area of natural outstanding beauty. Lots of country and riverside walks. We are also located on the C2C route. There is an abundance of wildlife in and around Alston, including the rare red squirrel.
Literally in the centre of Alston. Close to all local amenities, cafes and bars. Sleeping 2 people in twin beds.

  • A lovely, homely spot right in the centre of the quaint village of Alston. We loved the variety of mugs, cups and beautiful crockery. Microwave, cooker and fridge all available, and a great selection of pots and pans. The wifi was spotty at times. Cell reception seemed great. The co-OP is right across, 1 min walk so really convenient to get milk, dinner and other necessities. Parking can be a challenge, we found a way to maneuver into a very small spot in front of the building. There is a free parking lot at the top of the hill, probably about 5 mins walk. There is no shower. Bath is great with very hot water. Delicious biscuits were awaiting our arrival, thank you! We'd recommend staying here.

  • Great location, just outside of the small town of Alston. Beautiful set of cottages. We had heard that the cottage was attached to a hotel/ BnB. It was. We were upgraded to a bigger cottage due to a mixup. We loved it as a family. It was huge, spacious, clean and had a lovely view. The amenities are dated - the TVs are old and barely have channels, the microwave wasn't working, the kitchen wasn't as well stocked as other AirBnBs and the stove had no temperature controls. But pros more than made up for it, along with the hosts' hospitality. They gave us laundry liquid, butter, ketchup when we asked for it and tried to fix the microwave. So no complaints there. Would recommend. Alston, for its ambience, was our favourite leg of our vacation.

  • Very nice accommodation ideal Base for exploring the area

    Alan2018-09-07T00:00:00Z
  • My family and I had a great break in this lovely little cottage. It was very clean and had all the essentials provided for you such as tea, coffee, pots of milk, dishwasher tablets, dishcloth, tea towel, shower gel and shampoo etc. There is a co-op in Alston, which is only about 5 min drive away, to top up on anything you need. There is lots to do nearby, we especially enjoyed visiting several waterfalls. Our favourite was Ashgill Force. We would highly recommend staying here, we would certainly stay again.

We ate in the pub across the road on the evening and had breakfast in the hotel the next morning, which we 100% recommend!! Communication with the host was quick and they answered all of my questions. We will definitely be revisiting! X

  • Lovely stone cottage with plenty room for us all. Ceilings are low in bedrooms 2 and 3 and room in loft but ok if you are not on the tall side. Plenty crockery, utensils etc in kitchen. Nice crisp white sheets and big fluffy towels. The dinning table was large enough for us all to sit around. Love rooms for us all to be together. Pub oppost a plus too with comfy chairs and real fire. . The cottage is lovely and warm and spotlessly clean. We will definitely be back agat 👍

  • A peaceful and comfortable cottage close to the delightful Alston. The Cottage is in the border between Northumbria and Cumbria. There are many wonderful walks that are within thirty minutes by car: Hadrians Wall, Allen Banks. If you got time and like stone circles, this cottage is 20 minutes from one of the best stone circles: Long Meg and her daughters. Highly recommended.

  • Lovely house in a great location if you like to have the sense of being in the middle of nowhere. We had our 17 month old son with us and the house was perfectly set up for him with all the equipment such as high chair, stair gates and lots of toys. The owner also set up a travel cot for us with a proper mattress which was really appreciated because he slept much better than he would have done on a normal travel cot mattress! The owner was quick to respond when we had issues with the WiFi and sorted it quickly.

Quiet place, ideal for families who want to know the countryside of the border with Scotland. Also the city of Hexham (15 mll) was a pleasant discovery. We've been great at Joshua's house. 100% recommended

SORRY - DUE TO COVID-19 I AM TAKING NO BOOKINGS UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE This is my painting studio, (basic but comfy) in the garden of our 250 year old barn conversion - at Whitfield, 12 miles W of Hexham. This is part of a small collection of historical Northumbrian houses on a small organic farm in the North Pennines.
The studio has a veranda with wide open views over the East and West Allen valleys. Inside - as it is a working studio, there are the materials of the 'trade' -paintings leaning against walls etc, but there is enough space for two people to move about. It has two tables with chairs for writing or laptops, and a wood burning stove (logs small extra cost) and electric heater. The well-built sofa-bed (recently upgraded) is double size and comfy. It has a small cloakroom with toilet & wash basin with running cold water and a kettle for hot water. Guests tend to eat out in local pubs in evenings and bring their own food for breakfast and lunch. There is a kettle, toaster and double electric hob for basic cooking.
We are in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, near the Roman Wall. Alston, Cumbria is 9 miles away and the lovely Allendale village 3 miles away. The lake District is also within 1 and 2 hours drive from here. There is pony trekking nearby, and the river Allen is suitable for expert canoeists and kayakers when the river is in spate. Great for walkers and fit cyclists. We are virtually on the c2c cycle route.
  • Perfect for a 2 person/2 night stop over en route from down South up to Scotland. Quirky and creative studio space - perfectly adequate, cosy and comfortable. Location within easy drive of Steel Rigg carpark for Hadrians Wall- Sycamore Gap- Housesteads etc Charming hosts - there if we needed. Would definitely stay again.

Eastview is a 200 year old stone cottage set on the edge of the village green in the pretty village of Garrigill. It is an old miners cottage and retains many original features. We are ideally situated on the Pennine way, C2C cycle route and a couple of miles from Yad Moss Ski club. There is a post office and shop across the green. Alston is our nearest town about 4 miles away where there are plenty of places to get an evening meal.
Beams and fireplaces, low doorways Mind your head!!

My place sits at the base of the Pennines with great views of the fells and the Lake District hills. The village is quiet and peaceful with easy access to the Lakes and the Yorkshire Dales. We know the difference a good bed and a great shower make to your holiday along with fully equipped kitchens, free Wifi and everything you need - just like home from home. Our place is good for couples and families (with kids) and we take a dog by prior arrangement.

  • We had a great few days staying here, Kerry was very helpful with tips on where to walk/eat out. The apartment is lovely, very clean and quiet. The beds are really comfortable and having two bathrooms is an added plus. Kerry's place is perfectly placed for beautiful walks around the Pennines or the North Lakes. The village hasn't a shop or pub so you do need to be organised about buying food when you are out for the day but it wasn't a problem. There are pubs 3/4 miles away and Penrith isn't far with lots of different cuisine. All in all we had a lovely stay and just wish it could have been for longer.

    Clare2019-08-22T00:00:00Z
  • We have just spent 3 nights at Kerry's place and can't recommend it highly enough, with her husband Rob, they made our stay everything we could expect. The accommodation and location is absolutely as advertised with a great layout, comfortable beds and brilliant showers. Kerry & Rob were on hand if needed and proved to be excellent hosts with great communication for our arrival.

  • We enjoyed a long weekend at Rob’s cottage, taking in the spectacular views, fresh air, and cosy cottage atmosphere. The cottage is in an amazing location with lovely pastoral views from the bedrooms and front door. Well-equipped house in all senses, with a great kitchen, plenty of maps and guidebooks, and lots of games. Good log burner and great central heating/hot water - it was especially appreciated after we went on a stunning 10-mile walk to High Cup Nick and it started snowing! Alston is only a short drive away and has a co-op for everything you need. I would recommend this place to anyone looking to relax, reset, and take in some fresh air and fabulous views. Thanks Rob - we hope to be back.

  • If you look for a quiet place with all the conveniences you appreciate as a hiker, a place with otherworldly charme and amazing views, a place were you look forward to a day with the wind and rain howling round the place to truly enjoy its snuggness, cook up a storm and plan your next hikes - don't look any further. Communication with Rob went completely smoothly and I can only recommend this place. However, if you do require action, WiFi connectivity and buzzle around you - maybe this is not for you.

  • The cottage was beautiful, quaint and clean. Well-stocked kitchen. Wonderfully cosy living and dining area with a fantastic wood burner. Situated in the middle of nowhere in the hills, this is the perfect place to switch off. Excellent communication from the hosts. We loved our stay here and would return in a heartbeat!

  • Lovely people, lovely stay, anything we could wish for & more. Ivy had put the heating on for us when we arrived, so kind! We wished we could've stayed for longer!

  • A nicely equipped, dog friendly little place, ideal as a stop-over on our drive down south from the highlands. Idea for walking the dog directly from the property and lovely views over the surrounding countryside. I really liked Ivy who gave us a thorough and enjoyable tour of the property - a nice job has been done making the place suitable for airbnb guests and I wish them well with their venture.

Welcome to High Silly Hall - except it isn't silly and it is not a hall! An 'ancient tenement known as Silliehole' has existed on this site from the 1600s. The name is derived from the Old Norse "Seljaholh" - translating to Willow Hollow. Located in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, our home sits in 80 acres of land with tremendous views of the South Tyne Valley. It provides a great base for exploring Cumbria, Weardale, Durham and the North East.
The House When you arrive at our home down a short driveway, there is parking space and a covered area to store cycles or motorbikes. The driveway and house exterior has automatic sensor lighting so no problem finding your way if you arrive at night, which believe me, is pitch black when there is no moon. There is wheelchair/buggy access to the main entrance which takes you into the lobby/boot room. Here you will find access to: - The garage which contains washer and tumble dryer and airers to hang wet outdoor clothing. - Ground floor shower room and toilet. Ideal for rinsing off muddy people and pets, or for use if guests have difficulty using the stairs. Rest of the ground floor Through the lobby you will find a large open plan area consisting of a fully equipped kitchen, living and dining area. When you enter, we will let the incredible views speak for themselves. The high spec kitchen includes 2 full size ovens, induction hob, dishwasher, microwave, freezer and a large cabinet fridge. Various electric appliances (blenders etc.) are also available. Guests are welcome to use the recipe books stored in the large Victorian cabinet and a range of herbs, spices and condiments are also available for use. There is a blue-tooth enabled Pure Evoke Radio for streaming music, podcasts etc. The living area has plenty of comfortable seating, TV, X Box 360 and a stone surrounded wood burning stove to warm up the chilly nights. A large dog bed is available for the dog in your life to relax too. Through a door to the left, there is access to a large study, with an extensive library of books. Feel free to browse if you fancy abandoning the electronics and going old-school. The study also houses two single sofa beds - available at no extra charge. The living/dining area extends out to a large conservatory with sofa and chairs, although you will have to share the space with a large tree fern and a number of plants! The roof apertures in the conservatory have thermostatically controlled openers which activate once a certain temperature is reached. The conservatory opens out to a covered glass area with gas barbecue, table and outdoor seating. There is also outdoor lighting so you can sit out after dark. Exit the glass double doors into the hall to the stairs and front door porch. This takes you to the garden and a gate out into the fields - great for walking the dog, and for kids and adults alike to explore. First floor The hall has an antique writing desk if you need a workspace The two larger bedrooms have king size beds (plus 1 single in bedroom 2) and en-suite showers. The third bedroom has 2 bunks and a truckle bed. The bunks are built for adults and tested to a weight of 108 kg (17 stone). The truckle bed can be easily moved to another room to reconfigure sleeping arrangements. This room is right next door to the family bathroom - which must have some of the most amazing views you can have sitting on the loo! It also includes shower, bidet and bath. Each room has thermostatically controlled underfloor heating via a biomass boiler and hot water is supplemented by solar panels on the roof.
30 acres of our land is planted with young British native deciduous trees extending the wildlife corridor up from the South Tyne and Pennine Way. We have found a little natural pool in the river, which Daisy our dog loves to swim in on a hot day and we would be happy to give you directions if you, the dog or the kids would like to cool off. When walking round the fields, once you get your eye in, it is easy to spot the remains of the once thriving lead mining industry, with evidence of small settlements and primitive bell pits dug to extract the lead. We are a short walk from Alston Moor Golf Course, the highest golf course in England. The market town of Alston (highest market town in England - and yes there is a bit of a theme emerging!) is just 2 miles away for stocking up on groceries etc. There is a bakery, coffee shops and places to eat. Two lovely gift shops and a pottery shop. You must also try Alston Whole Foods, which in addition to selling absolutely delicious local cheeses, stocks a wide range of exotic food and drink. At the foot of Alston, you can find the South Tynedale Railway - the North of Englands highest narrow gauge railway and a popular heritage attraction.
  • A beautiful property in a beautiful location with the most stunning views. Edward Colette were great and very hospitable. Fully recommended.

  • Absolutely amazing house with everything you could possibly need, with stunning surroundings. Colette and Edward were incredible hosts, I can’t recommend this airbnb enough! Thank you!!!!

    Anya2019-07-25T00:00:00Z
  • This house is a great find and is in immaculate tip top condition. You want for nothing here, especially in the kitchen. All is perfectly thought out and feels as though it was all fitted brand new just a few hours Before you arrived! So much thought, care, attention and quality has gone into the house. Everything’s ‘top-drawer’. And our hosts were so welcoming and hospitable, but also maintained a discreet distance. Nothing was too much trouble. This experience was worth every penny and then some; dogs and humans agree: it’s a place to return to, definitely!

    Simon2019-07-06T00:00:00Z
  • This is one of the best Airbnb places we have ever stayed at (and we have stayed at many). Absolutely beautiful house, amazing views and every possible thing you could want in terms of cooking utensils, games, toys, waking equipment etc. Collette and Edward were the best hosts we have had. They went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed including purchasing toys and games for our kids. Location is great and close to the town but probably own car is essential. Places like this are what we like most about Airbnb. The highest possible recommendation from us!

    Sandeep2019-06-28T00:00:00Z
  • Our family had such a wonderful stay - thank you! The home had everything we needed and the kitchen was well organised with plenty crockery and cutlery and appliances. The log burner stove made it lovely and cosy. We even managed to get out in the hot tub despite the awful weather! A perfect spot for us and our baby. Thank you Neil

    James2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • These pods are much bigger than the picture looks like! They are so homely and have lovely touches. Really comfy bed, warm all the time and a powerful shower. Plenty of wood for the log burner too. The hot tub is just amazing and we spent so much time enjoying the view and really secluded and private. So nice to get away from it all for a few days. You can drive in to the little village in a few minutes but I think to walk it would take quite a bit and the hill is steep on the way back. We have nothing negative to say. Sue and Neil are so lovely and helped us out with bags from the car to the pod and everything. If you are looking for a touch of class then these pods area must. Thank you again Nic and Mel

  • A very well presented holiday cottage , immaculately clean and provided with all one could require. Beautifully situated in easy reach of the Lakes, Penrith and the North Pennines. Our hosts were charming, there when required and very helpful with local advice.

    Ian2019-09-16T00:00:00Z
  • Kerry and Rob went out of their way to welcome us and make booking and stay, a really easy experience from start to finish. Kerry responded very quickly and answered queries so that we could make decisions in a timely way. Although they weren’t able to be there when we arrived, they gave us instructions to find the key and a phone number should we need any help. Throughout the visit, they were available if you had questions but were not intrusive if you just wished to get on with the holiday. Barn was spotless, beds ultra comfortable, bathrooms sparkling clean with super towels and gel, soaps and shampoo if you needed it. The kitchen had everything you needed and there were welcome supplies for a cuppa and biscuits - lovely touch. Great local file too. We wouldn’t hesitate to book again.

  • Great location within easy drives to amenities. Lots of local sites and places to eat within a few minutes drive. Lovely cottage that was sparkling clean and well maintained. Provided a travel cot and highchair without prearranging which was incredibly helpful! Fantastic views and surroundings. We would definitely stay with Kerry again in the future.

  • Fabulous accommodation, really great hosts and beautiful location. Kerry and Rob were really welcoming with just the right amount of involvement... left us to it but really accessible when required. Rob even went the extra mile to help us out with a car related issue. If you’re looking for a quiet an peaceful get away in a beautiful location with great hosting then this is it, your search is over.

    Stewart2019-07-16T00:00:00Z
  • What a lovely long weekend at Byre Cottage! This was our first visit to the Eden Valley and we were not disappointed. The location is truly breathtaking with Cross Fell views from the living room and main bedroom. The cottage was very well appointed with everything you could need. Kerry was so helpful at each step of the way which made our stay totally stress free 😊. The barn itself is lovely and was spotlessly clean. The only thing future guests should note is that it really is in the country! Blencarn village itself has no shop or pub, the nearest options will require a short drive to Culgaith nearby (less than 10 minutes). Loved our stay though and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to anyone!

    Mary2019-07-03T00:00:00Z
  • Beautifully presented upside down house with wonderfully comfy beds, great shower and everything you could have wanted in the kitchen. We had a warm welcome and a very happy stay. Dunkeld Cottage is a detached chocolate box cottage within easy reach of the Lake District. Situated in a gorgeous village location with Michelin-listed bistro within walking distance. Great Wifi and Pet-friendly! Spacious and welcoming kitchen/breakfast room with full appliances. Large, cosy living/dining room with feature fireplace. Two double bedrooms and a bathroom with bath and shower over. Fully enclosed and private garden. Ideal for touring the Lake District ...
Dunkeld Cottage is a chocolate box style cottage within easy reach of the Lake District and is nestled at the foot of the Pennines! The cottage features stunning beams and original period features throughout, with everything thought of to make your stay a comfortable, relaxing one! The cottage dates back to 1820 and yet has been extremely well maintained and looked after - with all the mod cons! The kitchen/breakfast room is particularly lovely and has pretty views over the garden and is very spacious. All of the appliances you could need are here - including integral dishwasher, fridge/freezer, washing machine, tumble dryer and of course a hob and double oven. There is a spacious and cosy lounge/dining room which features a truly amazing fireplace, beamed ceilings throughout, comfy sofas, TV with numerous digital channels, WiFi, and a desk with leaflets on the local area and further seating. On the first floor there are two double bedrooms, again, boasting glorious beams throughout and are very charming. The master bedroom features a superking bed - or it can be turned into two single beds - ideal for families. The second bedroom has a double bed and both bedrooms have plenty of storage for your clothes and personal items. There is also a bathroom with a bath - ideal for a bubbly soaking after a long Lake District walk! The garden is fully enclosed and private and there is plenty of room for you to bring your bikes - and probably anything else like a canoe etc.. - just ask us! We love the fact that Ullswater is around a 15 minute scenic drive from the cottage and it is our favourite day out - there's so much to do there from walking the Ullswater Way, taking a Steamer boat out or getting involved in water sports. The villages of Pooley Bridge, Patterdale and Glenridding all provide plenty of sustenance as well, after a long day's activity! Equally, the Pennines are the backdrop of the cottage, and if you want to head away from the crowds that can sometimes gather in the summer, then a delightful stroll around Pennine country may be just what you need! Another great day out is just a short hop to the village of Dufton where you can climb the famous High Cup Nick. Likewise, Keswick is only a relatively short, scenic drive away - we recommend a boat trip, a hike up the famous Cat Bells, followed by a pub lunch or dinner in the fantastic town centre. There's so much to do - you'll need to keep coming back to do more! :)
Kirkby Thore is situated just a short drive from the Lake District - and most notably, glorious Ullswater - it's simply our favourite day out! You can walk a stretch of the Ullswater Way, with boat trips and tea-shops aplenty along the route! In our actual village, and within a short walk of the cottage, you will find a Michelin-listed bistro which serves fabulous food and alcohol, all at reasonable prices, given the quality. But if you fancy a stroll, a half an hours walk along the River Eden or along a country lane, takes you to Temple Sowerby, which is a traditional English pub. Another local walk takes you to the very pretty village of Long Marton which also has a quintessential English pub. Likewise, another half an hour to three quarters glorious walk along the River will let you arrive at Bolton, where another modern and stylish pub awaits you! We highly recommend you also visit the nearby village of Dufton and head up Dufton Pike if you have the legs for it - the views are simply superb. A stay at Dunkeld Cottage will enable you to enjoy delights both locally and also great as a base for exploring all the lakes - we love visiting Keswick and Grasmere, and a walk to Easedale Tarn is a gorgeous walk, ideal for all the family and is simply stunning. Guests who book with us are provided with ample guidance for days out, and we also regularly blog about the stuff we get up to when we visit - hopefully giving plenty of ideas!

Windy Hall really is somewhere special. High on the steep side of the South Tyne Valley it offers one of the most magnificent views in England. You may just want to stay and enjoy the peace and quiet, but Windy Hall is also ideally placed for day trips west to the Lake District National Park, east to the magnificent cathedral city of Durham or the cultural sights and life of Newcastle, and north to Hadrian's Wall and the Scottish Borders.
[Firstly let us know if you're a frontline NHS worker looking for a short isolated break and we'll make sure we give you a special cost only rate.] Through the renovation of the self contained west wing of our 18th century farmhouse we hope we have created a unique and luxurious hideaway, a very special place with one of the most spectacular views in the Cumbrian/Northumberland Pennines. This is a retreat for those who not only love the peace and quiet of remote fells, but can also find inspiration when the weather turns more elemental. We invite you to make yourself at home amongst original art, exposed beams and carefully chosen furnishings. The unique elevated location of Windy Hall is one of its attractions. However this means it's only reached by a 240m walk up the track from the public road and parking. We'll always do our best to be around to give you and your luggage a ride up in our 4WD when you arrive. If for any reason we can't be there when you arrive, we leave a bottle of bubbly and a box of chocolates to make up for the short walk. Guests can enjoy their own self contained dwelling in the West Wing with 2 upstairs Bedrooms, a Drawing Room, Kitchen, an upstairs Bathroom with bath & shower, a separate Toilet, and a downstairs Shower Room. There is a large entrance and utility area, as well as a long Upper Landing. We have given much thought to the tasteful interiors, however we suspect that most guests will consider the spectacular views over the South Tyne valley as being the real visual feast of a stay at Windy Hall. The Master Bedroom and the Drawing Room both have large floor to ceiling gothic stone mullioned windows looking west to Cross Fell and other Pennine summits. We have named the bedrooms after the fell tops they look onto. The Master Bedroom is the "Grey Nag" and has a king size double bed and windows on three sides. The second bedroom is "Kitten Tom" and has genuine Victorian iron double bedstead (with a new mattress!). This is slightly narrower than a modern double so we advertise it as a single. All our bedding is luxurious cotton with non-allergenic down duvets. There is an upstairs bathroom with a free standing copper bateau bath, as well as a copper basin and walk in shower. The toilet is also on the first floor. The Drawing Room is small but cosy with stunning views. There is a writing desk and 2 exceptionally comfortable sofas finished in authentic Harris Tweed. There is no conventional TV reception but we have TV with a Roku streaming dongle for BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, etc, as well as a DVD/BluRay player and a selection of movies. Original paintings from local artists and an extensive if eclectic book collection complete the room. The Kitchen is also compact with a small dining table. However it has all that is needed for a self catering stay such as fridge freezer, dishwasher, electric oven, microwave and an induction hob. There is also a Bluetooth speaker for use with guest smartphones as well as a Tassimo coffee maker. We'll leave you enough Tassimo pods for several cuppas per day but you may want to bring more of your own favourite brand. Also on the ground floor is another Shower Room that will also eventually house a small sauna cabin. The Entrance Hall provides ample space for taking off wet coats and shoes, as well as having a utility area with washing machine, tumble drier and sink. Being an old house the stairs are narrow and steep and offer the only access to the first floor. The approach to the Front Door is via an uneven and stone path with steps. Access to the Back Door is via a partly cobbled uneven track and a high step up. There are several exposed oak beams and trusses around the house which look wonderful but are below head height in some places so please take care. The West Wing is self contained and has it's own garden gate and front door. A back door from the kitchen opens out onto a small wooded garden area which is for the use of guests. This area contains our log shed and chicken house so we may occasionally have to be there ourselves. There is a picnic table outside the front gable for the sole use of our guests. If we are out, guests are welcome to sit at the table on our own terrace. We look forward to spending as much or as little time in conversation with our guest as you want. We'll always try to be available to collect guests from local public transport and can make suggestions on local attractions and walks. However if you want to be left alone to enjoy the peaceful solitude and tranquility of Windy Hall then we'll leave you in peace.
Windy Hall is located within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Pennines are the upland spine of northern England and comprise high open heather moorlands which fall steeply down to wooded and pasture valleys. The hills do not have the craggy grandeur of the nearby Lake District National Park, but they do have their own unique beauty. And if you do want the romantic peaks of Wordsworth's Lake District it's less than an hour's drive away. The small and compact town of Alston with its steep cobbled main street and ancient buildings is just 3 miles away and can be reached by a variety of scenic walks, cycle paths or by the narrow gauge South Tynedale Railway.
  • The best Airbnb we’ve stayed in. Amazing views, equipped with everything you need and David was the perfect host.

  • Breathtakingly beautiful location and property. The most peaceful Christmas we’ve ever had. Decorated with Christmas touches so we could put presents under the tree. Walking to the local church on Christmas Eve for carols by candlelight was so special. Dave & Sandra are wonderfully warm hosts. Couldn’t recommend more highly!

  • Absolutely stunning place, both in terms of views and decor. We had the most wonderful few days exploring the local area, even though it was quite hard to drag ourselves away from the house itself at times! Hope to return one day!

  • We had a fantastic stay at Neils place, the pods are spacious yet cosy at the same time and provide a perfect getaway with amazing views of the countryside. Neil was a great host, very friendly and helpful. Thanks very much!!

    Samantha2020-03-16T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful cabin with a wonderful view. We had the most relaxing stay, the pod was sparkling clean and beautifully designed, the log burner was cosy and the decking and hot tub is lovely and private. Our host Sue even got in touch to say we could stay longer than the usual check out to shelter from the miserable weather! We will definitely book again.

    Tasmin2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • Just had three amazing nights in the countryman... it did not disappoint! Fantastic views, perfectly private hot tub and deck area. The pods are beautifully furnished with homely touches. Brilliant location for exploring the local areas such as Kielder park and hadrians wall!! We will definitely visit again

    Linda2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful location and accommodation with friendly hosts. Loved getting out the city and into the middle of the country and the hot tub was a great wee bonus even in the middle of a storm! Hosts were so accommodating of our toddler and dog, providing a cot and high chair and making us all feel very welcome. Would definitely recommend!

  • Lovely pod. Will be back!

    Hannah2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • This was truly one of our most memorable and amazing weekend breaks, one that won't be forgotten. Neil, thank you so so much for the hospitality you was amazing. We will definitely be back again soon. Can't speak highly enough about the experience. We will definitely be recommending you to others. Only thing I would say is the pictures you have online for the pods and the surrounding area do not do it justice at all. The pods are stunning, brilliantly designed and built and the perfect size. You truly feel like you're the only people there. And even though all the pods were occupied we didn't hear or see anyone else. Secluded and truly beautiful. Can't wait to come back

    Geraint2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • AMAZING! Perfect for couples, really lovely local town with nice pubs! We loved it and can’t wait to return. Really easy going, friendly hosts who were more than happy to help with any problems. Can tell the hosts have worked really hard to create an amazing experience, highly recommend.

  • We stayed in Lynn's Shepherds hut for 1 night as a stopover on our way up to scotland & we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. From the little thoughtful touches such as the food & drinks to help ourselves to, the local recommendations and overall beauty & quaintness of the place we felt like the only people in the world there. Just Us and our Labrador - only way we could have appreciated it more would be to stay longer. Thank you

    Laura2019-10-08T00:00:00Z
  • We had a brilliant time, thank you! Lovely place in a great location for good pubs and walking! Thanks Lynn for being so welcoming.

    Hannah2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • This place was a little gem! Lyn was great, first of all, very friendly. The accomodation itself was beautiful, warm, dry, so so cosy, and had ALL the homely touches you could wish for. Describing this place as a 'hut' just doesn't cut it. Loved our night here, listening to the rain on the roof whilst snug and smug inside. Beautiful wildlife, too. A deer and her two two fawns were wandering around right outside!

    Ben2019-10-04T00:00:00Z
  • Today I have returned home from my night away at Lynns Shepherds Hut. Lynn was a wonderful host and even gave me and my partner a lift down the to accommodation in her car because it was raining. Nothing was too much effort and she was very welcoming. The Shepherds Hut was everything I wanted and so much more! The extra touches make this place, such as wine, cheese, bread, fresh coffee and even a BIRTHDAY CAKE because it was my birthday whilst I was there. This was such a lovely touch and really thoughtful. I would recommend this place to anyone and would love to return.

    Molly2019-09-28T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay was absolutely lovely. The hut is a great space with so many thoughtful little touches. As a host Lynn is amazing and thought of everything to make us feel so welcome. We are already looking forward to coming back!

    Catherine2019-09-27T00:00:00Z
  • Lynn’s place was great. We were met by Maureen and parked on the road side. It was a longer than expected walk down the hill but was fine and Maureen helped us with our stuff. Lovely hut with outdoor fire pit and seating. Really enjoyed it and will be back another weekend.

    Phil2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • This please was a magic find. The location is beautiful and secluded. The hut is so pretty, all the little touches. We loved having a fire in the evening under the stars. The best bit was the food hamper, it was the perfect breakfast. I really recommend this place. We wished we’d have bought our dog, it would have been perfect.

  • Super location, great base for exploring the area. Beautiful scenery and lovely town. One thing to note, the accommodation is on the top of a steep hill so a car would be required for anyone with mobility issues and it would not be easy for wheelchair users to get around the nearby area.

    Joanne2019-08-02T00:00:00Z
  • Skip’s place was spotless, clean, and exactly as described on the info page. We didn’t have any queries prior to arrival, but this was largely because Skip was speedy in giving any information before we needed to ask! The flat was pre-heated for our arrival, and instructions were provided for everything that might need it. We loved in particular the personalised tea/coffee etc and the charity donation box for books. Thank you Skip!
