“Wellington Quarry, today in the middle of the town of Arras, is a former underground quarry dating back to the Middle Ages and Roman times. During WWI New Zealanders in particular expanded the network of tunnels and rooms creating an underground city used by forces of the British Empire and Commonwealth, During the Battle of Arras 1917, it was used for the Allied offensive which was launched in the early hours of 9 April 1917 when 24,000 men surged out from their underground hiding places. Very emotional feeling at the exit.”
