Apartment - Private room · West Street, Oakland, CA 94612, United States

Come stay with us! We have a bright guest room and a fully stocked kitchen. House is located on a quiet street with ample parking in close proximity to mass transit.

The Space

Concisely, we live in an area of Oakland that is eclectic, interesting, and in close proximity to many interesting sights and convenient services, but some folks may find the racially and economically diverse neighborhood to lie outside their comfort zone, though we consider our neighborhood to be safe. Our room is comfortable and cozy, but we are not neat-freaks and the bathroom and kitchen are definitely shared spaces. As goes with our affordable rate, we'd like you to think of a stay with us as more of a deluxe couchsurf-y experience than that of a hotel. Our place has a lot of character (as do we), which means it's likely you'll be offered the perks that come with that, such as great local traveling advice, a shared meal when the timing's right, exciting conversation, friendly banter and an open ear for any unforeseen concerns or conundrums that may arise. And the cost of those perks? Just a little extra spirit of adventure when it comes to traveling to and from our place and using our sometimes unconventionally furnished Oakland-grown apartment.

And a little more detail:

Location: The house is centrally located between the Uptown, North Oakland, and West Oakland areas: a small hike (less than a mile) but an easy bike/bus/car/cab ride to many bars, art galleries, music halls, Ethiopian/Korean/Middle Eastern markets, Whole Foods, and a $6 cinema pub. The AcTransit line 18 passes right by the house ($2.10), which will bring you here in 4 minutes from the 19th St. BART station (subway), where you can catch a 15 minute ride to San Francisco ($3.50ish). There is ample street parking in front of the house. We're pretty laid-back and hope you are, too.

Room: For our affordable rate you get your own room (10'x11') with a desk, a bit of closet space, 2 beds -- a full-size bed with a pillow-top mattress on a boxspring, a second twin-size pillow top bed (on a Timber Nest loft/bunk) -- and full use of our shared bathroom and kitchen. Our kitchen is well stocked, with all the cookware you need to sauté some veggies or bake a pie. Use of our basic cooking essentials (olive oil, butter, spices, rice) are included and there is a small table to eat at. We prefer that kitchen use be limited to before 11PM at night (23:00). The only other inhabitants of our two bedroom apartment are the two of us, who reserve the other two rooms for our bedroom and office. Our space lies on the opposite side of the kitchen from your room so there's a nice sense of privacy for all parties involved.

Arriving info: The apartment is two blocks from the I-980 freeway which makes for a quick 15-minute drive to San Francisco and we're about a mile away from either the 19th St. or MacArthur BART Stations (train trips to San Francisco take 15 minutes and the trains run every 10 to 15 minutes for most hours of the day and Berkeley's even closer). There is plenty of STREET parking out front and on the surrounding streets, though our favorite way to get around Oakland is by bicycle (which can be rented at nearby Bay Area Bikes in Jack London Square). If you're coming by foot, we would highly recommend you PLAN ON ARRIVING BY BUS OR TAXI THE DAY OF YOUR ARRIVAL. We are also available to pick you up from BART/Amtrak/Greyhound. Once you've gotten some rest and checked out our handy in-room map and info you'll be much better prepared to navigate our fair city. The walk to BART or under the freeway (on 27th street) to the well-traveled Telegraph Avenue is full of character but can be overwhelming, so it's worth it to consider the $2.10 AcTransit bus-ride (including line 18, which goes right by our house) or the 6ish dollar cab-ride to downtown Oakland and/or BART. PLEASE refer to our map for preferred routes in the "House Manual" section after booking.

  • I need a base to transition and within an urban area with all of the resources available to help that transition happen. Along the way, I met my Hosts. Engaging and knowledgeable of their environment and their surroundings, they were both wonderful hosts and two really neat people.
The room was compact with a queen-sized bed X 2, desk and closet, clean and comfortable. Quick bus connection just at the corner and a short ride to BART (the metro rail) and the greater Bay Area, including the two airports are all easy travel.
Thanks again, to both of you. Great stay!

  • The room was cozy and the young couple was kind. John gave some great pointers on hikes and gave me some maps to assist in my adventures.

Before going to Oakland I was scared because all of the bad stories and honestly, it was not far off from what I'm used to in LA. The neighborhood could use some more lighting but keep your head up and be aware of your surroundings.

  • John and Ro were awesome hosts. Very friendly and understanding couple. They
Made sure i was comfortable and i barely noticed them in the house. Its exactly what it looks like on the computer. Cozy. Artsy, spacious and clean.
Nice walking distance to downtown area for anything. I would definitely stay there again and again.

  • Very accommodating hosts; great to have two beds in one room.

  • These two characters were great fun and fabulous hosts! Excellent company, conversation, and tips for local food & drink. Lovely, comfortable room and, as Oakland is a pretty manageably sized town, the apartment is close enough to everything.. It's especially well-placed for strolling down to Oakland's First Fridays/Art Murmur art walk or popping over to San Francisco. Great spot, would highly recommend the John&Reaux household for your stay!

Glad you got to experience so much of Oakland, especially Art Murmur, while you stayed here!

  • I cannot thank John & Reaux enough for coming to our aid when a friend and I were left at 8 PM on a Saturday night with nowhere to stay. We most likely would have ended up having a terrible night cramped in our car and a miserable time in SF but Jeaux came to the rescue!
We found them around 8 PM Saturday night on AirBnB and they were quick to respond with helpful information on how to get there, contact them, etc.
The room is a comfortable size, twin mattress on top and a full on the bottom. I wouldn't recommend sleeping on top if you're on the taller side but at 5'7 I slept perfectly! The room has an abundance of electrical outlets which is perfect for multiple phones, camera chargers, and anything else you might have. John & Reaux also leave information on the desk on transportation, wifi, and their home policy. So convenient! We got there close to 10 PM and the first thing I wanted to do was shower. Although the bathroom leans a little on the messier side, the shower more than makes up for it with plenty of hot water and generous size. They have plenty of extra toiletries in case you forgot yours (shampoo, toothpaste, nail cutters!) it's great!
Because we were in late and out early, we didn't get to spend much time getting to know our hosts but they seemed very warm and inviting and I would definitely recommend their home to anyone traveling up to San Francisco for a little getaway.
This was my first time using AirBnB and I look forward to using it again!

  • Jeaux & John were great hosts! Their place was great and we had a great time there. We really enjoyed Oakland and the astmosphere there. First of all: Don't believe what the media tells you. We never felt unsafe or in danger at all and their place is located really close to a bus and downtown Oakland and Berkeley. The first Friday street party on Telegraph was really fun and with the BART train you are everywhere in SFO in just a couple of minutes. Jeaux and John are two really lovely people. I definitely will come back to Oakland and If you wanna have a great time stay with them.

  • Good communication with the hosts. Comfortable, cozy, homey, and secure. Excellent water pressure and ample hot water in the shower I must say. A Great little inner city crib for a short stay.

  • my boyfriend and I spent one night at johns place.he was really friendly and giving us a lot of advices.we left earlier because we wanted to stay closer to san francisco.the room is simple but not very clean.

  • John was a gracious host. He explained everything clearly. The area is 'sketchy' but we were safe and had no problems the whole time. It's very convenient to the highways and getting into San Francisco was easy. The sleeping arrangements reminded me of college days. The bathroom/shower was convenient and all in all things worked out just fine for our 2 day stay. Thanks!

About
We're a quirky couple with a unique take on the Bay Area. We're often found bicycling into West Oakland for a cup of coffee, popping up at new acquaintance's house party, or skittering off to not-so-far-off lands to find the best dive bar cronies in Stockton. She's a writer, a cook, a bicycle mechanic (still learning) and a recycling-themed schemer. He's not so readily labeled, but he's just as likely to fix you up his signature dish of curried veggies, pick your brain on the least-trafficked areas of your hometown or rope you into an impromptu photo-shoot. Sometimes we've got extra time on our hands and sometimes we're busy, but we always make the time to make a new friend or hear a new perspective when we come across them. Thanks for looking!
