About this listing
A large, bright mother-in-law suite is available. First, I would like to explain what I mean when I call it a M-I-L suite. I advertise the space as a M-I-L suite as the suite is NOT completely private. You use my front door (not a separate entrance) and I generally use the back as that is where the garage is.
The suite area is down six stairs from the front landing and my area is up 6 stairs. A storage room for my private use and the laundry are both located downstairs in the M-I-L suite. I need to access both from time to time. I try to keep this to a minimum but may have to access either area while you are staying. I do my own laundry while my guests are out. The fact that it is not a completely private suite is reflected in my lower price.
All pictures of areas shown are for your use. The suite has a separate 4pc bathroom with towels included. Kitchen is complete with fridge, stove, microwave, dishes, utensils, pots and pans, coffee maker. Every thing you need to do some great cooking if you wish! The bedroom is a good size and has a queen sized bed (all linens included). On occasion my guests have had a child and there is enough room for an air mattress to go in the room beside the bed.
The living room is fairly large and has a nice big window to let in the light. Sun comes around in the late afternoon. it is equipped with a small TV. a DVD player (I supply a small selection of movies for you to watch), and a boom box for radio.
The house is located in a mature southwest location. Most Calgary neighbourhoods are not really walking friendly. That said, my house is fairly close to parks, shopping and c-train. It is only a 7-10 min walk to the train station and takes approximately 30mins to reach city centre and Stampede grounds (slightly closer). There is a Provincial park with bike and hiking paths close by. Also, you can walk to the Southcentre mall as well as banks, shops, restaurants and pubs, Safeway, Walmart, Superstore. I have walked to these places and takes about 20min one way.
Most of the major attractions in Calgary can be accessed by public transit including the downtown area, zoo, museum, stampede grounds.
There is easy access to major roads including Macleod and Deerfoot Trails that allows you to get out of the city very easily to head north or south.
Street parking is available in front of the house. If you are flying in and not renting a car, and if my schedule permits, arrangements can be made to pick you up at the airport for an additional charge.
Please note this is a NON-SMOKING house. There is also a dog in the house. He is very friendly and likes to greet you on arrival but stays upstairs with me.
No smoking house
What a wonderful time we had in Calgary!! I came to Calgary for a short sabbatical at the University and my husband did his work from home -- Barb's Mother-in-Law suite, that is. Barb was the perfect host for us -- she was full of useful information, and was extremely generous with her belongings (let my husband explore the area on her bike) and her time (she acted as tour guide for our weekend hiking adventures!!).
For those folks that don't want the interaction, Barb will certainly give you your privacy. We are more social and enjoyed sitting and visiting with Barb in the backyard, taking advantage of the wonderful Calgary summer weather (quite the contrast from the weather we left behind in Texas!!), and learning about Calgary and its associated sights/activities.
The accommodations were spacious and bright and comfortable -- plenty of room to work and a full kitchen for cooking. With a multi-week stay like ours, a kitchen is very much appreciated. We had the advantage of being able to cook all our meals, if we wished, but had plenty of shopping and restaurants very close to Barb's house. While being at the south end of the city, it was easy to reach just about any other section of the city. We did have a car available, so those without transportation will have more difficulty getting around. The house is near the train, but we did not utilize it.
The neighborhood that Barb's place is located is quite nice. Tree lined streets, quiet, yet close to all types of transportation. Barb greeted us and showed us around the GREAT apartment where we were to stay. The apartment has a large living room with a TV on cable, a very large kitchen with all appliances, roomy bedroom and full bathroom. All were immaculate. There is plenty of street parking if you are driving a car. You are also close to many restaurants and shopping. The location is fantastic for every type of sightseeing you would want to do. The train and buses are close to take you to the City Center.
Thank you Barb. We really did enjoy our stay in your beautiful apartment!!
The apartment was excellent, the pictures do not do it justice. The amenities were generous, but there was little control of the apartment's temperature. Barb was very friendly and tried to help.
Barb was a very friendly hostess, making sure I was comfortable and had everything I needed. She had lots of good recommendations of places to go and see in the city and in Banff as well. It was the perfect place to get some much needed rest, as it was a very quiet neighborhood and house. I enjoyed my staff at Barb's and would definitely recommend staying there!
Barb's suite was perfect for what we needed. We were able to cook almost all of our meals in the kitchen, saving us a lot of money while I was in Calgary for a week long course. The bed was comfortable and everything was very clean and tidy. We also had access to her washer and dryer which was great. The neighborhood was close to a nice shopping mall. I would definitely recommend Barb and her suite for anyone looking to travel to Calgary on a budget!
Barb was simply fantastic. She's so prompt with her replies that it feels as if you are chatting live with her. She offered to pick us up from the airport and also took us to the local grocery store to purchase our supplies. Her house is immaculate, neat and feels like a home. She goes out of her way to ensure that you are comfortable and your stay is a pleasure. Would definitely recommend her place for a future stay.
Thanks a ton for your hospitality and concern Barb.
Barb is wonderful and the space is very tidy and clean, she has a dog which is very friendly and doesn't bark, this is the second time I have stayed with Barb and would gladly stay a third:)
About the Host, Barb
I love to travel and if you are searching out this website I imagine you do as well. Howver the price of accommodation can eat up a lot of your spending money. I have stayed in all kinds of accommodation including hostels, hotels, RV's and B&B's. Stayed on the beach in Baja California, hostels in Austrailia, auberge's while walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain, B&B's in Canada and London and of course various hotels mostly in large cities.
I think Airbnb is a great idea and have been hosting my downstairs suite for about 7 months now. I have enjoyed meeting people from all over the world, and find it so interesting the reasons they are all travelling to Calgary.
My hope is to make your visit the best one possible and will try to do whatever I can to make your visit to Calgary, whether it is your first time or you come all the time, the best time possible!
Thanks for your time. I hope you come to visit :0)
